The artists of the Baroque Era were convinced Europeans. For them, to be sure, ‘Europa’ was first and foremost the Phoenician princess kidnapped by Zeus in the form of a bull. But it was in travelling round the kingdoms, empires and states of our continent, from Dresden to London, from Venice to Vienna, that the careers of Handel, Porpora, Vivaldi and Caldara were built. To take the example of the last-named: born in Venice around 1670, he gave Barcelona the first opera ever heard in Catalonia, Il più bel nome (1708), commissioned by his patron, the future Emperor Charles VI, before eventually settling in Vienna in the latter’s service in 1716. A prolific composer with three thousand works to his credit, Caldara died in the Austrian capital in 1736 – in the Kärtnerstrasse, like Vivaldi five years later . . . and in a similar state of destitution. Johann Mattheson wrote of him that, like Handel and Vivaldi, he possessed ‘a great knowledge of human feelings and emotions’. Far from any superficiality, his sound palette takes the rhetoric and artifices of the Baroque to an exceptionally high level. Caldara knows how to suspend time by inviting grace into his theatre . . . Antonio was born into the musical profession, as the son of a violinist at St Mark’s who was a friend of Vivaldi’s father. He began his career at the Basilica of the Doges and frequented the circle of Giovanni Legrenzi. He learnt singing and the violin and cello, to which he devoted some fine instrumental works in the shape of his two sets of twelve trio sonatas. Then he entered the service of Ferdinando Carlo, the lavish Gonzaga Duke of Mantua. In 1707 we find him in Rome, at a key date in the history of music. All the significant composers of the Baroque then worked in the Eternal City, notably for the patrons of the arts Ruspoli and Ottoboni. Among those who rubbed shoulders in the academies held in their palazzos were Pasquini, Alessandro Scarlatti, Corelli and the young Georg Friedrich Händel (as he then was). Caldara took over the latter’s post in the service of Marquis Ruspoli when Handel left to enjoy a triumph in Venice before going on to conquer London. 15

CALDARAʼS MADDALENA BY VINCENT BOREL

› MENU

Throughout his career, Caldara composed oratorios, adapting his style to the commissions and tastes of his employers. The works of his Viennese period are sumptuous, with large forces and an orgy of counterpoint well suited to the severe taste of Charles VI. And it is the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna that possesses the two manuscript sources of the oratorio Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo, which the composer probably brought in his luggage. For this work dates from his Venetian period, and is more intimate in form, sometimes close to idiom of the cantata. It is the third of Caldara’s oratorios in a catalogue of around forty, and dates from 1697 or 1698. Oratorio, like opera, is a drama, a theatre in music, in which recitative has a central role, its theological and spiritual significance the raison d’être of the whole work. The aria comes as the culmination of the recitative, the rhetorical amplification of the text. The genre, born in the wake of the Counter-Reformation and illustrated notably by the Roman composers Carissimi and Landi, was initially sung in Latin and performed in pious confraternities. But La Maddalena is an oratorio volgare, that is, sung in Italian. In 1698 the genre was already some sixty years old. Originally conceived to incite its listeners to perform spiritual exercises, the oratorio subsequently took the place of secular opera during the periods when the theatres were closed. It donned the musical garb of opera, and even used some of its visual artifices, including (re)decorated naves and altars, stage machinery and costumes. In Venice, these pious concerts began to be practised in 1667 among the Oratorians of the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione (or della Fava), located in the Castello district. The ‘season’ of musical devotional exercises extended from November to Lent. La Maddalena’s text and plot are perfectly suited to these months of penance. The aim was to set in relief the moral dilemma that tortures the sinful Mary Magdalene, who must choose between profane love and sacred love, between leading a life of lust or becoming the bride of Christ. It is this inner torment that is developed by Lodovico Forni’s libretto, written for Modena around a decade before Caldara’s work and already set by another cosmopolitan European composer, Bononcini. The protagonists of La Maddalena, six in number, are split between Earth and Heaven. They are Martha, Mary Magdalene and a Pharisee on the one hand; Jesus, Earthly Love and Divine Love on the other. They divide among them thirty-three arias and ensembles, in a sequence alternating recitative and 16

aria. Ritornellos, often written in five string parts, indicate the shift from one character to the other. This apparent uniformity conceals a number of narrative subtleties. The shortest arias, scored for voice and continuo, are allotted to the introspective and intimate episodes, such as Maddalena’s ‘Voglio piangere’. The opera’s vocal fireworks are reserved for the large-scale arias and require more virtuosity, for example ‘Fin che danzan’ for Amore Terreno. Caldara uses all the resources of Baroque pathos: the descending ostinato to represent sleep in ‘Dormi, o cara’; the bewitching passacaglia-type bass in ‘Spera, consolati’. Himself an outstanding cellist, he uses the dark voice of his instrument in the obbligato of ‘Pompe inutili’, a disturbing meditation on vanity. The rhythm of ‘In lagrime stemprato’ endeavours to make the penitent’s tears audible. Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo is a work in which the instrumental palette remains austere. In the Imperial Chapel of the Hofburg, where Caldara had virtuosos from Bohemia at his disposal, his ‘sacred’ orchestra was subsequently enriched with new colours thanks to the use of the chalumeau, trombones and even the psaltery. The figure of Mary Magdalene was often to reappear in these surroundings, as in the opulent Morte e sepoltura di Cristo (1724). But Caldara’s style, whether sober or robust, never forgets that the oratorio is first and foremost a theatre of the soul. The Oratorians of Santa Maria della Fava, like the Emperor Charles VI, would not have tolerated music that overstepped the bounds of decorum suited to the expression of faith. Baroque, yes, but severe.

EMMANUELLE DE NEGRI MAÏLYS DE VILLOUTREYS BENEDETTA MAZZUCATO REINOUD VAN MECHELEN RICCARDO NOVARO DAMIEN GUILLON

1707 findet man ihn in Rom wieder.

Hélas, trop importun, Qui trouble mon repos ? Oimè, troppo importuno, Chi mi turba i riposi? Alas, who intrudes to disturb my rest? While I lie in sleep’s embrace shall I then still never find at least respite, if not peace, from my bitter sufferings? And by what law, oh God, is my breast always held exposed to such savage war? And my thoughts disturbed by such violent battling? There seem to be two [Mary Magdalenes within my breast, and two wills contained [within one. I would follow the path that a true light’s rays shine upon, but I like pleasure; although it comes in fleeting [flashes alone; thus now embracing, [now shunning the same object causes my soul such distress that I still despair of any brief [solace for my cruel torment.
