BY ALEXANDRE DRATWICKI (PALAZZETTO BRU ZANE)
For several years now, the Alpha label and the Palazzetto Bru Zane have been engaged in the rediscovery of the French Romantic repertory, an aspect of the nineteenth century that is still little known. At the centre of the artistic project on each occasion is a singer or instrumentalist who places his or her artistic rigour and curiosity at the service of a new adventure. This time it is the tenor Julien Behr, already much admired for his charismatic vocal style and personality, who is the protagonist of a recital that revisits this repertory in all its variety, ranging from tenderness to heroism, from joy to melancholy. The Romantic tenor voice adopted very different guises in France between 1800 and 1900. Grand opéra requires it to be wide in compass, ringing in tone and crowned with top notes emitted in voix de poitrine (chest voice) from the 1830s onwards. Opéra-comique wishes it to be light, clear and capable of half-tones in voix de tête (head voice) right up to the time of Bizet and Gounod. The tenor of the First Empire, in Méhul and Cherubini (around 1800), is central and very baritone-like in tessitura; the tenor of the July Monarchy, in Adam and Auber (around 1840), borrows his coloratura and virtuosity from Rossini. In short, there is nothing more difficult for a tenor than to ‘find his voice’ in this imbroglio of genres and institutions. The later Romantic era mixed the specificities of each voice type in order to give birth to the lead tenor known as ‘grand ténor d’opéra-comique’, also called ‘ténor de demi-caractère’, capable of lyricism and power yet also of sweetness and introspection (thanks to the typically French voix de tête). Gérald (Delibes), Roméo (Gounod), Des Grieux (Massenet), Mylio (Lalo) and many other operatic heroes became internationally renowned characters. With his warm timbre, the firmness of his articulation, the elegance of his phrasing and the radiant ductility of his upper middle range, Julien Behr is one of the contemporary tenors best able to do justice to this demi-caractère repertory, often assigned to excessively heavy voices that do not necessarily reveal its finesse and variety. Between shadows and light . . . 20
SHADOWS . . . It was in 1866 that Ambroise Thomas produced what was to remain his greatest success: Mignon, adapted from Goethe. It gives the hero Wilhelm Meister several arias with contrasting moods, notably the couplets ‘Elle ne croyait pas’ in Act Three, in which he recalls the naïve purity of the girl for whom his heart throbs. The simple harmony and the vocal line in conjunct intervals, enlivened only by a viola arpeggio and a brief incursion into the minor, culminate in a restrained high note, as if to represent the simplicity of the heroine he evokes. Among Bizet’s little-known works is La Jolie Fille de Perth, premiered the following year (1867). The vibrant serenade to Catherine is distinguished by the orchestral colour of its refined motifs. The vocal line is reminiscent of the style of Félicien David, then highly fashionable in Paris. More ‘Italianate’ than Thomas’s, this unshowy number presents a disjunct and hence naturally more expressive vocal idiom. The Cavatine from Gounod’s Cinq-Mars (1877) is also bathed in a poetic half-tone. After a serene orchestral introduction, the hero nostalgically remembers his beloved. As tradition dictates, the central part of the air gradually becomes agitated but, having reached its climax, reverts to its original character. Shimmering strings, harp arpeggios, the diffuse sonority of the cor anglais: everything contributes to the voluptuous languor of one of Gounod’s finest numbers, oddly forgotten until recently. About ten years later, in 1888, Benjamin Godard offered the public his Jocelyn, whose Berceuse was subsequently to go through all sorts of arrangements, with or without words. The beauty of the vocal line makes it a memorable melody quite independently of the text it supports. Written in a fairly high tessitura, this lullaby is an ideal vehicle for the heady top register of the grand ténor d’opéra-comique. Its intimate atmosphere is perfectly conveyed by economical scoring: only two flutes are added to the harp and strings. Twenty years later, André Messager’s splendid Fortunio (1907) was premiered at the Opéra-Comique, where all the previous works in our programme had also been performed. This opera that renounces separate numbers in favour of a continuously flowing musical texture is today regarded as its composer’s masterpiece and testifies, better than any of his other operatic works, to Messager’s qualities as an orchestrator. The ‘old grey house’ that the hero remembers seems to be painted in the listener’s ears with ‘grey’ textures: a soft carpet of strings, tender punctuations from the woodwind, an expressive countermelody on the horn.

‘I SAW THE BANNER OF FRANCE!’
When Delibes put on his Jean de Nivelle at the Opéra-Comique in 1880, he was already the composer of several successful ballets whose glittering scores had left their mark on the Opéra audience. Soon to be fitted out with recitatives and thereby considered a ‘historical opera’ worthy of large houses with a ‘serious’ repertory, Jean de Nivelle is written for a tenor capable of heroism. The opening of the recitative foreshadows the valiant vocal writing of Massenet’s Le Cid, which the Opéra was to discover five years later. Soon, however, the tone changes and the delicate clarinet accompaniment of the cantabile ‘C’était l’honneur et le devoir’ reverts to the elegiac touch typical of opéra-comique. Critics deplored the work’s complicated libretto, but the music enjoyed such success that the management of the Salle Favart quickly commissioned Delibes to write another work. This was the triumphal Lakmé, premiered in 1883. Is it any wonder that Jean de Nivelle’s best recipes are reprised in Lakmé? Thus the air for Gérald, the tenor lover, borrows his predecessor’s fluid clarinet figurations to accompany his tender cantilena. But Delibes pushes his harmonic exploration further here, and tautens the vocal line, adding multiple top notes. Not surprisingly, it became the showpiece aria of many high tenors. Le Chevalier Jean (1885) by Victorin Joncières – one of the first Wagnerians in France – is a good example of the countless scores by composers who are little regarded today but which are nevertheless captivating. For ambitious orchestration, varied harmonies and apt word-setting are all undeniably present in this air typical of the idiom of the ténor de demi-caractère: passionate yet without excess, the music offers opportunities for fine high notes but more especially for dreamy half-tones which will not fail to delight today’s music-lover. Two more arias complete this survey, illustrating the popularity of operetta in French translation, which continued in France until the 1960s. Julien Behr sings one of the most famous numbers from Die lustige Witwe (premiered in Vienna in 1905; in London as The Merry Widow in 1907; and in Paris as La Veuve joyeuse in 1909), whose libretto is based on Henri Meilhac’s comedy L’Attaché d’ambassade (1861); here we find all the lilting charm of Viennese operetta and its luxuriant orchestration. From Das Land des Lächelns (The Land of Smiles/Le Pays du sourire, 1929), he presents the song written for the tenor Richard Tauber, the dedicatee of many late works by Lehár, who composed for him ‘Tauberlieder’, ‘tailor-made’ numbers that ensured both the personal success of the performer and the popularity of the work as a 22
whole. The song written for this operetta, ‘Dein ist mein ganzes Herz’ (known in French under the title ‘Je t’ai donné mon cœur’ and in English as ‘You are my heart’s delight’ or ‘My heart is yours alone’), is probably the most famous of all the ‘Tauberlieder’. Three rarely performed orchestral works have been chosen to punctuate this recital. The first of these is Duparc’s Aux étoiles (Beneath the stars), composed in 1874 and revised in 1911, but which had to wait until 1919 for its first performance, in New York. It was the first section of a symphonic work entitled Poème nocturne, later destroyed. Its shifting orchestral textures are sometimes dense and dark, sometimes soft and evanescent thanks to the interventions of solo strings at the top of their range. With a much more substantial scoring (four bassoons are required), La Nuit et l’Amour (Night and Love) by Augusta Holmès (1888) moves in the same spheres of sensuous and nocturnal elegy. The piece was composed as part of an ‘ode-symphonie’ for chorus and orchestra with spoken verse, entitled Ludus pro Patria (Games for the Fatherland). Finally, we have the opportunity to discover Chabrier’s Habanera, initially for piano, which the composer skilfully filled out with luxuriant orchestration.

Recitative and Stances of Jean I saw the banner of France! I thought I was braving all when I braved [death; I felt nothing within me but my suffering! Laughing at fortune and defying fate, I marched with lofty soul, borne [by my vengeance, But I saw the banner of France rise!
It was honour and duty, The fatherland itself! Whence comes your secret power, Noble and moving emblem? In your folds I have seen once more A whole past that I love. It was honour and duty, The fatherland itself! O dreams of old that come to assail me, No, no, I cannot flee you!
I saw revived before my eyes The sweet land of France, The green hillsides, the shady woods, Those friends of my childhood, 37

Air of Fortunio I loved the old grey house Where I grew up with my family; The days passed by uneventfully there Beneath the branches of the old walnut tree.
Things are familiar to me there; They welcomed me kindly, And in its tangled web, the ivy Entwined my childish heart.
Alas, my heart has changed since then; Other thoughts have invaded me. Already it fades into oblivion, My poor old grey house.

VICTORIN JONCIÈRES (1839-1903) LE CHEVALIER JEAN (1885) Scène et Air de Jean Parlons de moi, le voulez-vous ? D’aucuns me disaient mort en Terre Sainte.
Scene and Air of Jean Let us speak of me, shall we? There were some who said I died [in the Holy Land. Would that every man said to be dead Might see himself so very much alive! By the Cross, I have traversed [many adventures, But of the perils I faced I now remember nothing. I return with a heart open to tender joys yet [to come Which will repay me for so many lost days [of happiness! For I love her! Yes, I love her!
Oui !
Yes! Alas, I love with the utmost tenderness An adorable child With a pure and enchanting gaze. Her heart silently answered mine; Yes, we loved each other in silence.
When I shivered with unutterable emotion, I saw her blush and tremble like me. Out there, in the sandy deserts, In the noisy cities, 39

She was my only thought, My only hope, my only treasure. Always my soul was lulled By her voice that I still hear now. At once absent and present, She possessed, to hold me in thrall, The bitter torments of waiting And the delight of remembrance.

Cavatina of Gérald To make a sketch of a jewel, Is that so grave a matter? Ah! Frédéric is mad! But whence comes this strange dread? What supernatural feeling Has troubled my thoughts Amid this solemn calm? Like some daughter of my caprice, The unknown girl comes before my eyes! Her voice whispers Mysterious words in my ear. No! No!
Divine, deceitful fancy, You come back to lead me astray again. Go, return to the land of dreams, O fancy, on your golden wings!
This bracelet must have encircled The smooth arm of the pagan girl! The only hand small enough to pass through it Would fit snugly in mine! This golden band, I surmise, 44

Non ! Non ! Fuyez ! Fuyez, chimères, Rêves éphémères Qui troublez ma raison.
Has followed the tripping steps Of a tiny foot which alights Only on moss or flowers. And this necklace that still bears her scent, Still imbued with her fragrance, May have felt her faithful heart beating, All atremble at the name of her beloved. No! No! Begone! Begone, delusions, Ephemeral dreams That confuse my reason.

Aria of Sou-Chong I have given you my heart, You hold all my happiness within you. Without your kiss it dies, For without sunshine flowers die. Yours is my beautiful love song And for you alone it will always flower. You whom I adore, O my sweetness, Tell me once more: I have given you my heart.

Even when I am far from you, Your presence remains within me. Your fragrant breath intoxicates me. I only have one reason to live: you, [nothing but you. Everywhere I see your wonderful hair, Your dreamy glance and your bright eyes, And no song is as sweet to me as your voice.

O Spring, give her a drop of your dew! O my heart, give her a ray of your sunshine!
In vain I await a confession from her lips, In vain I seek to know her secret sorrows. My gaze intimidates her and my voice [frightens her; A single word troubles her soul and makes [her tears flow! To restore to the faded flower Her freshness, her crimson splendour, O Spring, give her a drop of your dew! O my heart, give her a ray of your sunshine!
Aria of Camille Come to this pretty pavilion: It seems very indulgent, very kind; Its walls will make it their duty To say nothing and see nothing. It will be congenial, Welcoming and discreet. Come, the open door invites us: It seems to murmur, ‘Enter!’

Come! The open door invites us! No one will ever know anything. Come! Come! It will be congenial, Welcoming and discreet. Come, the open door invites us: It seems to murmur, ‘Ah, come!’
The memories are there to smother me In tears, in flowers, in kisses. Yes, I see again the beautiful April mornings: We lived under the rooftops, on the heights [of the city.
You who pass by without seeing me, Without even saying good evening, Give me a little hope tonight . . . I feel such sorrow. You whose glance I watch for, 48
Adieu… Bonsoir !…
Why do you pass by me tonight [without seeing me? One word, I’ll say it: ‘I love you!’ It’s absurd, it’s bohemian, It’s young and it’s sad too. You who pass by without seeing me, Will you give me tonight A little hope? Then . . . You who pass by without seeing me, Without giving me hope, Farewell! Good night!
