THE PIANO AS TELESCOPE AND MICROSCOPE BY CHRISTOPHE GHRISTI Alexander Scriabin and Maurice Ravel were born in the 1870s, just a few years apart. Both of them were already at the piano and studying music at the time of Franz Liszt’s death in 1886. He it was who revealed to them – as to Debussy, Busoni, Albeniz, Bartók, Reger, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov – the infinite horizon of the instrument. Not of course in its expressive or metaphysical aspects: here Liszt had been anticipated by the masters he admired: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, and Liszt’s friend Chopin. And yet, in tandem with the development of the instrument during the nineteenth century, he had bequeathed a pianistic world, an instrument with unheard-of tonal and musical possibilities, not only capable of intimacy and introspection, but of the full spectrum of expression. Both Scriabin and Ravel appraised and took on the inheritance of Liszt, but treated it in a radically different way. Though born and educated in Moscow, Scriabin was more influenced by Chopin and Liszt than by Russian composers. For a long time the piano was his entire universe, and his first works show clearly the tradition he drew on: waltzes, études, preludes, mazurkas… Soon, however, he took up the piano sonata, a genre rarely approached at the time (Prokofiev was the other exception). He composed ten of them, forming a spiritual ladder, following the model of Beethoven’s thirty-two sonatas. The Third Sonata, dating from 1898, is a four-movement work as with Beethoven and Chopin, but entirely free of all influences. It is strongly of its time, post-romantic to the point of dizziness, richly melodic and with a flamboyant sense of pathos. Scriabin plunges voluptuously into the volcanic lava of the 6

Nothing was further from Ravel than this will to power, this exaltation of the ego. Contrary to Scriabin, he mistrusted feeling and metapysics. Again, unlike Scriabin, he loved local colour and exoticism, whether oriental or Madagascan. He had an extreme curiosity about nature, something Scriabin, a follower of Baudelaire, scorned as a ‘hallowed vegetable’. 7

human sensibility and the torments of the soul, laying claim to what the writer Anna de Noailles called ‘The Honour of Suffering’. He set out the programme of this odyssey himself: ‘The free, wild soul hurls itself with passion into sadness and conflict. (…) The soul finds a sort of momentary rest. (…) The soul is adrift in a sea of feelings both sweet and melancholy: love, sadness, vague desires, indefinable thoughts of ghostly fragility. (…) In the torment of the raging elements, the soul thrashes about, doing battle in a state of euphoria. From the depths of being rises the voice of the Man-God whose song of victory sounds out triumphantly! Yet, still too weak, when close to reaching the summit he is struck down, and falls into the abyss of Nothingness.’ One thinks here of the visions of Zarathustra, the symphonies of Mahler, the symbolist paintings of Vroubel or Jean Deville, or Maeterlinck’s line in his collection Serres chaudes (Hothouses): ‘A music of brass at the windows of the incurable.’ This euphoria carries the Waltz Op. 38 to a state of disorientation. There is no cataclysm here, as there is in Ravel’s ‘La Valse’, but the purely dionysiac exaltation of a whirling, reckless abandon. In his final sonata, composed in 1913, Scriabin had reached the end of his mystical path, with all crises now overcome, and the soul completely dissolving in ecstasy in the cosmos. Here there is no further sense of movement, nor even of structure as such, just a musical experience that seems neither to begin nor to end: a diffraction of eternity. The trill is omnipresent here, making the notes shiver and shimmer like the never fixed yet eternal light of the stars. The music’s perpetual movement, here taken to the point of paroxysm, gives a captivating feeling of stillness and blessedness. The Man-God rejoins Nirvana and this time, he triumphs definitively.
Ravel might have told him, like Rilke in the ninth Duino Elegy: ‘Extol the world to the angel, not the ineffable: for him you cannot impress with sublime emotions; in the universe, where he more feelingly feels, you are a novice. Therefore show him that which is simple, that which, shaped from age to age, lives like something of ours, in reach of the hand and within our vision.’ Such is the humble aspiration of Miroirs, a collection of five pieces composed in 1905, each one independent, but magically intertwined with the others. At this same period, Albert Kahn was collecting thousands of autochrome plates from all over the world to form his Archives of the Planet. The cycle of Miroirs makes up an album of five sumptuous autochromes, five visions seen with the uncompromising eye of an entomologist, an ornithologist or a meteorologist, displayed on a keyboard without any limits, in sound combinations that come close to a state of hallucination. Obviously, this is the point where Ravel and Scriabin meet. First performed by Ricardo Viñes at the Salle Érard in Paris, each of the pieces is dedicated to one of the members of Les Apaches, the group of artists Ravel had helped to found. Noctuelles (Night Moths, dedicated to the poet Léon-Paul Fargue) evokes the moths of nighttime, beginning the cycle with a rustling of wings and a jumble of notes sounding as if they are being gently brushed against, then snuffed out even more quickly than they appeared. This elusive fluttering contrasts with the deserted, disturbing, close calm of Oiseaux tristes (Sad Birds), that Ravel himself described as evoking ‘birds lost in the oppressive atmosphere of a very dark forest at the hottest hours of summer’. Une barque sur l’océan (A Boat on the Ocean) unfurls arpeggios and trills to evoke waves and sea spray. This was a few years after Jeux d’Eau, Ravel rediscovering this element of water that he could evoke so well. No storm here, but bracing swells that glitter in the sunshine, like a memory of childhood on the coast of the Basque country. L’Alborada del Gracioso (The Jester’s Morning Song) is the only tableau that allows any human intrusion. This is a song of seduction, over-insistent and probably futile, by a man ripe in years under the balcony of a young girl. Yet once again, here in this song of desire we find only nature in 8

its carnal vitality, decked out with all the Hispanic musical language of which Ravel was so fond – here it owes more to Goya than to picture postcards. This collection of pieces ends as if by magic in a hushed, twilight Valley of Bells: La Vallée des cloches. Here, within just a few notes, we are gripped by a feeling that space itself is expanded. Out of this tranquillity rises an inexpressible song: here too perhaps is Nirvana, with the sky becoming saturated with a dark blue, the wind falling, and the silence of the night suddenly seeming to invade the whole earth.
