ThE SORcERER’S SONS BY CHrisTOpHE gHrisTi

After the death of Wagner, opera houses in the German-speaking countries had great difficulty in finding a successor for him. The Old Sorcerer had reigned alone, had wished it thus, and no one was there to take his place . . . His most inspired admirers, from Bruckner to Wolf, touched barely if at all on the genre of opera; no more did the numerous rivals or enemies he had been provided with, gathered around Brahms or beneath the banner of Grieg. It was to Italy or to France that the opera houses went looking for their indispensable novelties. When Wagner died in 1883, Richard Strauss was a very young man of nineteen. His father, a renowned virtuoso, was principal horn of the Court Orchestra in Munich and had played at the early Bayreuth festivals. Nevertheless, it was first and foremost Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann that he gave his son to study. Richard made a precocious start as a composer: lieder, sonatas, overtures for orchestra. Soon he embarked on a brilliant conducting career and succeeded Hans von Bülow (Cosima Wagner’s first husband) in Meiningen. Munich, Vienna, Berlin offered him their orchestras, and, following in Liszt’s footsteps, he conducted the operas of Wagner in Weimar. Before tackling works for the stage, his supreme desire, Strauss preferred to devote himself to the orchestra, and continued Liszt’s experiments in the domain of the symphonic poem. In 1890, the success of Death and Transfiguration brought him a reputation as a composer of the front rank. But things were more complicated than that: the ghost of the Sorcerer still haunted his first opera, Guntram (1894), too faux-medieval to convince. It was a failure that 14

long rankled with Strauss, who was genuinely unused to being treated that way. The operatic projects were shelved until later, and the Till Eulenspiegel he had been intending to bring to the stage finally became a poem for orchestra, premiered in Cologne in 1895. The composer himself was to say later on that his symphonic poems were merely preparatory studies for his operas. What is certain is that Strauss applied the lesson he had learnt from Wagner, that of how to tell a story. Throughout his score, he noted down the adventures of his dashing hero, derived from German folk tradition, and here represented by the horn (Siegfried once more) and the clarinet. But he did not wish to impose them on his listeners, who can let themselves be carried away by the exhilarating energy of this sparkling rondo. It was only ten years later that Strauss would finally establish himself on the European operatic stage with the formidable trio of Salome, Elektra and Der Rosenkavalier. In Vienna, fin de siècle musical life was dominated by Brahms, who had settled there in 1862. Shortly after his death in 1897, it was Mahler who guided the capital of music into the new century. Born in 1871, Zemlinsky came of a Jewish family, cultivated, but much less affluent than Strauss’s. His father was a journalist and writer. The young Alexander began the piano at an early age, sang in choirs and soon played the organ in the synagogue. In 1884 he entered the Vienna Conservatory, studying notably with Robert Fuchs, one of the leading teachers of the day. His brilliant academic results earned him encouraging remarks from Brahms and the congratulations of the famous critic Hanslick. At the Conservatory Zemlinsky made the acquaintance of Schoenberg, three years his junior, who was long to be his musical travelling companion. All this made him the perfect representative of that legendary Vienna, Vienna 1900, the Vienna of the Jugendstil and the Secession, of Klimt and Otto Wagner, of Schnitzler and Hofmannsthal. His music has the same luxuriance and extreme refinement,

the iridescent gold and the crepuscular mood. Important as it was in the history of the arts, that golden age was fairly brief and was shattered by the First World War. But, in 1900, Zemlinsky still had every reason to hope, and he entered the new century in a blaze of glory, with his opera Es war einmal (Once upon a time) given its premiere by Mahler on 22 January. A year later, Zemlinsky went with Schoenberg to hear a concert by Richard Strauss, in a programme featuring Till Eulenspiegel and the Austrian premiere of Ein Heldenleben. Both men were impressed by this new work and decided they too would write a sweeping symphonic poem. This was the genesis of two major but very different works, Die Seejungfrau (The mermaid) and Pelleas und Melisande, premiered in the same concert on 25 January 1905. Zemlinsky worked on his composition throughout 1902 and into the spring of 1903. The choice of Hans Christian Andersen’s story already gives us an initial image of the work as a grand aquatic fairytale extravaganza. It so happens that, at the same moment, Dvoˇrák had composed his Rusalka (1901) on the same subject and Rimsky-Korsakov his Sadko (1898) – two works that do not hesitate to plunge into watery depths. But let us not forget that Wagner had got there before them, and that his Ring des Nibelungen also begins amid flowing waters. And indeed it is to the hypnotic prelude of Das Rheingold that our thoughts turn in the introduction to Die Seejungfrau. But the comparison must stop there: Zemlinsky too has broken the fatal spell and deploys a radically different sound world, nearer in a sense to the French or Russian idioms, and belonging to another era. Dividing his Fantasy for orchestra into three parts, he devised a scenario fairly close to that of a ballet. Yet, as in the case of Till, his listeners must not follow a story but allow themselves to be borne along by the powerful and spellbinding flow of the orchestration, a marvel of evocation and lyricism. Zemlinsky’s biographers have noted the fact that this poem of an impossible love and of the sea emerged at the 16

very moment when the young and fascinating Alma Schindler turned her back on him and married Gustav Mahler . . . It is true that he never got over this shattered hope. At the premiere, the success of Die Seejungfrau was immediate, whereas his friend Schoenberg’s Pelleas exasperated the audience. Out of solidarity, as it were, and in the conviction that his comrade had written the true masterpiece, Zemlinsky did all he could to forget this magical work, and after two further concerts in Berlin and Prague he did not even include it in his catalogue of compositions. Die Seejungfrau was long forgotten, then declared lost. It was not until 1976 that the first part was rediscovered in a private collection in Vienna and linked with the other two parts, located in the Library of Congress in Washington. And it was in 1984 that its siren song was heard once more, before Antony Beaumont published a definitive critical edition of it in 2013.
