"It so happens that my son, Sébastien, who's also been my most faithful partner for almost 30 years, and I live in the same village!! When we found ourselves locked down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we thought that instead of moping around by ourselves, we could maybe bend the rules and gather a couple of times a week - to keep on playing, as simple as that. That's what is was at first: some kind of instinctive gesture, a straight and spontaneous response to the necessity we were facing, not to let the music go!. "The paradox of the situation was instantly blatant to us. Because we found ourlseves playing merely to share, without any expected result, without having to be different, without the need to build a new repertoire, all of our inner-censorship melted away. Surprisingly, during our sessions we saw some old themes coming back to us, forgotten standards such as "Round'Midnight" or "Besame Mucho" that we had never allowed ourselves to play until then. New group, new field of research, new sound. Sylvain Cathala is part of the big family of faithful musicians from the Triton, scene recognized for its will and ability to enable many projects to arise in the form of creations, preceded by residences. He often performed there with his different formations, from trio to septet. It is with this new quintet composed of Benjamin Moussay (piano), Olivier Laisney (trumpet), Frédéric Chiffoleau (double bass) and Maxime Zampieri (drums), that he recorded Poetry Of Storms, in December last year, after a creation residency, during a concert live broadcast by France Musique in Yvan Amar's "Jazz Club" show. For Poetry of Storms, the singular writing of Sylvain Cathala renews the improvisation forms while keeping close links with the history of jazz. A writing certainly chiseled, but which allows beautiful escapes for these musicians always listening to emotions shared in a flamboyant lyricism.
Christophe Marguet - Daniel Erdmann Pronto ! Pronto! brings us a quartet of four major personalities from the European jazz scene. All four of them are musicians who love to work with written compositions, melodies, atmospheres but also create new imaginations using their own improvisations, exploring them and then transforming them into the preestablished modes of playing. This quartet nurtures a collective language from everyone's universe, which generates a distinctive sound, a completely new sound identity, specific to the group. The repertoire of the album is entirely composed by Christophe Marguet and Daniel Erdmann. They know each other perfectly and are used to working together to nurture the construction of the repertoire. Bahía is a beautiful mix of classical cello and vocals, drawing on Cuban son, samba, bossa nova, tango, jazz and chanson. It opens with ‘Habana’, where she was born 26 years ago to a musical family - her father acclaimed Chilean pianist Carlos Maza and her mother Cuban guitarist Mirza Sierra. The title track ‘Bahia’, is an ode to the district in Havana where she spent her childhood and built her memories, translating the crazy sensation of Cuba into her music. The album travels through Latin America – ‘Huayno’ is based on a Quechua rhythm and dance from Peru, ‘Todo Irá Bien’ (‘Everything will be fine’), written during lockdown, draws on Cuban son and ‘Astor Piazzola’ on tango, which she composed originally for a quartet in celebration of the centenary of the Argentinian composer. The album was recorded acousBcally in Barcelona in one take: “direct, simple, sincere in one go, one a5ernoon was enough”. For Ana Carla it is a post-pandemic album where the importance of the present cannot be overstated. For example, there is no sub-text in ‘PeBt Français’: “At one point I was in Paris, going to a café, the Saint-Regis, and exchanging loveletters with a boy.” That is all.

Guillaume Vierset & Harvest Group Lightmares Harvest Group is one of the projects of the talented guitarist Guillaume Vierset. If his musical repertoire is heterogeneous — think of his recent jazz-meets-rock project EDGES, still fresh and hot, and his numerous involvements in indie/pop projects — Harvest's universe is quite singular and recognizable from the very first listening. It lulls us with its jazz impregnated with a layer of folk and touches of rock music, but above all with a good dose of dreaminess. Almost functioning as visual compositions, both previous albums are very representative of this unique sound. In that same setting, Harvest's third album moves us once again, with the backdrop of this vague zone which separates day and night, light and shadow, dream and reality... The repertoire of 'Lightmares' is presented in two parts: the first half illustrates the day, the other the night. Or is it the other way ‘round? The music lets us plunge into a world between dog and wolf, where we sometimes perceive frightening shadows, ultimately annihilated by the yellow flashlights and reassuring headlights of the melodies: Lightmares. The album also wants to make us feel the flight of time, which flows through our fingers while we try to hold it back and drink from it, day and night.

Andy Emler - Claude Tchamitchian - Eric Echampard The Useful Report Twenty years ago, the core players of the MegaOctet Andy Emler (p), Claude Tchamitchian (cb) and ric champard (dr) created this trio, a parallel project to the full orchestra, as a way to deepen and create their own sound. The Useful Report is the trio’s fourth album and is a little more written than usual. Why the title “useful report”? Because it establishes the sad observation that personal interest is prioritized over life, superficiality over depth, appearance over simply being. The entire project that is “The Useful Report” can perhaps be held within these words : bringing life back to the center. When one writes about a trio that mixes composition and improvisation, it’s common to speak of “complicity”, especially when the musicians have been playing together for twenty years. It’s a little less common to say that within the Trio ETE, the listener isn’t really hearing a dialogue between three individuals, but rather a polyphonic monologue. No one plays a solo per say, as Andy Emler would say, the trio is the soloist. The result : the trio becomes an independent musical entity, with its necessary organic cohesion. Anchored in sensation, the performance is very physical (and not only because it is virtuoso). Andy also often speaks of music as a “voyage”. With this trio it is all the more true, as the sound matter is always in motion. The voyage is as much external, with the music being in constant motion, as it is internal, with the listening experience being synonymous with openness - to oneself and to the world around. In this new repertoire, we find the useful mix of improvisation-landscape, research on rhythm which flirts with contemporary music and hypnotic dynamics anchored in rock music - it isn’t for nothing that Andy Emler is fan of rock bands such as Led Zeppelin or The police. Moreover, the album is intended to be listened to at a high volume, as one would listen to a rock band or a symphonic orchestra. In brief, it still isn’t jazz (missed the mark again!), but it is not something else either. The Trio ETE achieves the dream of a music that simply is.

This is the most personal album I´ve made so far, where the music sums up my musical upbringing as well as the essence of me as a woman, singer and musician. I was raised in a musical home in Sweden by my parents; both being Polish jazz musicians. Having both feet in two different cultures has made me realise how important my roots are, what they mean and what they have contributed to in my life. As an only child, music was always an comfort and my closest friend and as a little girl I remember singing from the moment I woke up to the very last waking minute of the day. In my adult life, my love for music has affected me and it has become such a strong part of my identity. Now is the time for me to emphasise all the inspiration of which jazz, blues and soul have always been a prominent theme in my musical upbringing. The engaging and strong support from both my parents is something I´m forever grateful for and so I choose to dedicate this album to my loving mother Krystyna Buczek and father Bruno Buczek.

The golden tones of England’s most famous popular trumpeter, Eddie Calvert (1922-1978), a 50s icon, are heard throughout an immaculate programme of favourites to celebrate his centenary. Lancastrian Eddie Calvert stepped out from the ranks of the Billy Ternent and Geraldo bands of the 40s to become “The Man With The Golden Trumpet”, a hugely successful recording phenomenon, providing one of the distinctive sounds of the 50s. That well-earned nickname gives the title to Retrospective’s generous programme of 29 of Calvert’s finest recordings from 1951 to 1961. All seven of his chart hits are here. Not once but twice he hit the jackpot with huge selling Number Ones; firstly with O mein Papa, then Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White (with which he traded the top spot with Perez Prado). He thus became the first British instrumentalist to top the chart twice, and the first to earn a Gold Disc. Bigger Les myosotis One guy from Marseille, the other from Paris, two from the Jura mountains, the other a lost bewildered Irishman from Dublin that somehow managed after traveling around the world to bump into them in the middle of nowhere in the east of France and find a loving muse of a home: Bigger. Govrache Apagogie After his double album "Des MURMURES et des CRIS", awarded Grand Prix of the Charles Cros Academy, Govrache comes back with a new opus: ΛPΛGOGIE. Written during the two confinements, this album bears witness to the world around us, emphasizing the absurdity that punctuates our lives. Govrache is a rare artist, as sensitive as he is powerful: his poetry is modern and his interpretation fair, sincere, embodied. The subject is precise, the texts chiseled. Accompanied by a double bass player, a pianist and a beat-maker, Govrache proposes an album as musical as it is poetic, oscillating between slam and hip-hop. The syllabic inversion of the artist's surname will be obvious, and will even quickly arouse curiosity. Good idea, because the background behind the shape is particularly galvanizing. A wonderful juggler of words, Govrache, a former gypsy jazz guitarist with just the right amount of corrosive lyrics, had a primordial encounter in 2008, of those who make you take side roads: Gaël Faye was a revealer for him. "I probably took my biggest artistic slap, just with words. It was an eye opener and I started writing and doing slam parties." Another good idea… because from song to slam, Govrache has found his identity, carved his lyrics in granite, sometimes in silk too. ΛPΛGOGIE, a term used to define reasoning through the absurd, follows “Des Murmures et des Cris”, which the Charles Cros Academy had rightly rewarded by awarding him its Grand Prix. After an opening piece that summons soulful choirs to a swaying melody that smells jazz sprinkled with funk, the tone is set: Govrache shears the words, triturates the verses, multiplies the senses with in the background, precisely, a total, precise, well-argued anti-apagogy.
