A summary of the

ISI Inspection Report 2025

Elstree is a warm and inclusive community that thrives on mutual respect, courtesy and loyalty.

From the Headmaster

I am delighted with the feedback from the ISI Inspectors following their recent visit. The inspection went particularly well and we met all the standards by which we must operate, the best possible outcome of the new ISI inspection framework.

There were so many positives to the process but perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the inspection was that we achieved an outstanding 99% satisfaction rate in the pupil, parent and staff survey that the Elstree Community completed, a result for which we are truly humbled and grateful.

At Elstree, we believe in the importance of a proper childhood. We aim to provide a safe, inspiring and happy environment where every child has a sense of their worth, whatever area of school life they excel in. We proudly combine academic ambition with outstanding co-curricular opportunities, ensuring we equip pupils with the skills, knowledge and character they will

need to serve their community and thrive in our everchanging world.

All modern inspections must propose at least one ‘recommended next step’ and I enjoyed discussing possible recommendations with the Reporting Inspector. Our recommendation relates to setting consistently high expectations of pupils in lessons and challenging them with more complex activities when they are ready to do so.

The inspectors repeatedly commented on the warmth of the Elstree community and how much they had enjoyed their time at the school. It was a pleasure to welcome them here and we shall continue to take pride in all that we do.

Leadership, Management and Governance

Leaders create a warm and inclusive community that thrives on mutual respect, courtesy and loyalty. Relationships between teachers and pupils are very positive.

Governors are experienced and knowledgeable. They know the school well, providing close and supportive oversight so that the school continues to improve.

Pupils’ well-being is consistently prioritised and well-promoted and at the heart of decision-making.

High-quality boarding provision and care are central to the ethos of the school.

Quality of Education, Training and Recreation

The school’s ambitious and wide-ranging curriculum enables pupils to learn and to achieve well in a wide range of areas.

Pupils develop a broad range of knowledge and skills. They are well prepared for their next stages in education.

Teachers know their pupils well. Positive relationships between teachers and pupils underpin the effective learning that is the norm.

The extra-curricular programme is extensive and popular. A wide selection of academic, sporting, creative and performing arts opportunities develop pupils’ skills in a range of areas.

Pupils’ Physical, Mental Health and

Emotional Wellbeing

Provision for pupils’ wellbeing, including their emotional and mental health, is embedded effectively across the school.

Pupils learn about the importance of healthy eating and how to make good choices.

The broad and inclusive sports programme is effective in promoting pupils’ enjoyment, physical development and wellbeing.

Boarding staff create a warm and welcoming environment, which is highly effective in supporting pupils’ personal development. The boarding culture of ‘home from home’ fosters companionship and community.

Pupils’ Social and Economic Education and Contribution to Society

Standards of behaviour across the school are high. The school fosters positive behaviour through consistent reinforcement of values such as kindness, honesty and respect.

Staff are skilful in teaching pupils how to work and play together. Pupils learn about the importance of supporting and encouraging each other.

Boarding arrangements, the house system and the extra-curricular programme allow pupils from different year groups to play and work together.

Pupils take part in and lead charity events which help pupils to develop a strong sense of responsibility towards local communities.

Safeguarding

Leaders and governors have a clear and appropriate safeguarding policy. Procedures are effective and in line with statutory requirements.

Daily staff briefings and weekly safeguarding meetings enable safeguarding leaders to work closely with pastoral staff to identify and monitor pupils’ needs.

The school’s clear code of conduct means that staff know what is expected of them. Boarders have a high level of trust in the boarding house staff.

Pupils are taught how to keep safe. A clear and consistently applied policy on the use of devices supports safeguarding during the school day and in the boarding houses.
