BAKERSFIELD, CA - Cosas están a punto de mejorar para los pacientes con problemas cardiacos que requieren de un electroencefalograma (EKG en inglés) durante un momento de emergencia. Salvador Solorio-Ruiz, un habitante de Delano que ha estado activo en la comunidad desde joven, ha sido elegido alcalde de Delano. Criado por padres trabajadores que trabajaron como trabajadores agrícolas al llegar a Estados Unidos y más tarde como camionero y cuidador infantil, ahora está en posición de representar los mismos problemas que afectan a la comunidad latina. Especialmente en este clima político actual que sigue procesando, deshumanizando y discriminando a latinos y otras comunidades desfavorecidas. El alcalde recién elegido reconoce la importancia de mantener a los funcionarios electos responsables respecto a cómo ciertas políticas afectan a la comunidad. A los 24 años, fue vicealcalde y concejal de la ciudad de Delano. En su nuevo puesto, pretende ofrecer más oportunidades para que los jóvenes participen en el gobierno local, más oportunidades de empleo y, lo que es importante, formas para que la comunidad destaque. En su país natal, Guatemala, Maribel asistió a una escuela de una sola aula durante dos años, pero la maestra a menudo se ausentaba, lo que provocaba la cancelación de las clases. Nunca aprendió a leer. La escuela cerró durante la COVID y nunca regresó a clases hasta el año pasado, cuando se mudó a Oakland. Ahora, con 11 años y matriculada en la escuela secundaria, está aprendiendo inglés y, al mismo tiempo, llenando los vacíos en su educación: cómo leer, interpretar gráficos y adquirir otras habilidades que nunca había aprendido antes. El Departamento de Obras Públicas del Condado de Kern anunció hoy que ha recibido una subvención de la Oficina de Seguridad Vial de California (OTS) para mejorar su Programa de Seguridad para Bicicletas y Peatones. La financiación ayudará a promover hábitos seguros entre peatones y ciclistas, al tiempo que reforzará la responsabilidad que tienen los conductores de vigilar a las personas que comparten nuestras calles y caminos. La subvención apoyará las actividades del programa hasta el 30 de septiembre de 2026. “Estamos entusiasmados de recibir esta subvención, que nos permitirá ampliar significativamente nuestro programa de seguridad para bicicletas y peatones”, dijo Yolanda Alcantar, directora de Obras Públicas del condado de Kern. “Al centrarnos en la educación, la concienciación y la promoción de prácticas seguras, nuestro objetivo es reducir los accidentes y prevenir lesiones. (Bakersfield) - La fiscal del condado de Kern, Cynthia Zimmer, anunció hoy un importante. El 9 de diciembre de 2025, un jurado del condado de Kern declaró a Julio Arroyo culpable de dos cargos de evasión grave de un agente de la ley, delito grave de conducir un vehículo robado, recepción de propiedad robada y delito menor de resistencia al arresto. El caso fue procesado por el fiscal adjunto Truman Hance. El 15 de junio de 2025, un agente de la Patrulla de Carreteras de California (CHP) localizó un vehículo supuestamente robado conducido por Arroyo e intentó realizar una parada de tráfico sobre el vehículo. Sin dudarlo, Arroyo aceleró inmediatamente y llevó al agente de la CHP en una larga y peligrosa persecución en coche. Poco después de que comenzara la persecución, Arroyo circuló por el lado opuesto del tráfico tanto en Stockdale Hwy como en New Stine Rd, circulando a velocidades superiores a 70 millas por hora en sentido contrario, lo que obligó a los conductores a esquivar su camino. Se saltó varios semáforos en rojo mientras circulaba a más de 50 millas por hora y casi chocó con otros vehículos en movimiento en varias ocasiones. La persecución concluyó finalmente cuando Arroyo perdió el control del camión robado y chocó contra tres coches aparcados antes de volcar hasta el jardín delantero de una vivienda. El vehículo chocó contra el muro de ladrillo que lo rodeaba y quedó apoyado en la casa. Inmediatamente después de la colisión, Arroyo saltó del vehículo averiado y huyó a pie. El agente de la CHP pudo detener a Arroyo y detenerlo. La fiscal del distrito Cynthia Zimmer comentó; “El delito de Arroyo se agravó cuando eludió a las fuerzas del orden y se comportó de manera que puso en peligro no solo al agente que respondió, sino también a numerosos miembros de la comunidad. Esta conducta imprudente y descuidada merece graves consecuencias penales.” La sentencia está fijada para el 8 de enero de 2026, ante el Honorable Eric Bradshaw en el Departamento 5 del Tribunal Superior del Condado de Kern. “EKG” VIENE de primera página transmitir un electroencefalograma en menos de cinco minutos a un hospital y obtener una diagnosis en segundos. “Esta iniciativa, que llamamos “Doce pistas por delante” (twelve leads ahead en inglés) contribuirá nueva tecnología a EMTs para obtener y prevenir ataques cardiacos con más rapidez e informar a hospitales con más rapidez” dijo Brynn Carrigan, directora del Departamento de Salubridad del Condado de Kern. “Esto muestra como el Condado de Kern responde de inmediato a este tipo de emergencias”. Kardia 12L, ya aprobado por la FDA, es un sistema portátil de ECG en reposo de 12 derivaciones, impulsado por IA. Con una tecnología simplificada de derivaciones, Kardia 12L ofrece una eficiencia clínica excepcional que amplía el acceso a registros de 12 derivaciones en más entornos que nunca. Su diseño único de un solo cable hace que la colocación de las derivaciones sea más intuitiva y menos propensa a errores, de modo que incluso el personal cualificado con poca experiencia en ECG puede obtener un registro preciso en minutos. Y con un millón de ECG de las principales instituciones médicas de EE. UU., nuestro equipo desarrolló un algoritmo robusto con múltiples modelos de IA de redes neuronales profundas. Hospitales pueden ver la información del paciente al meterse a su aplicación de KardiaPro en línea. Los dispositivos tienen un valor aproximado de $1,800.00 cada uno, comparados con los dispositivos actualmente usados que tienen un valor entre $20,000 a $60,000 cada uno. Este sistema tiene la meta de democratizar el acceso a un ECG de 12 pistas, moviendo las herramientas de diagnóstico crítico hacia el más allá de los hospitales a otros puntos de acceso, el cual esta apoyado por el Departamento de Servicios de Emergecia de Kern. ano aprobó la creación de una junta de consejo juvenil que Solorio-Ruiz pretende poner en marcha durante su mandato para aumentar la participación juvenil. Ha ayudado a establecer becas gestionadas por la ciudad y ha donado fondos a la Fundación Bakersfield College. “Mi amor y admiración por invertir en la juventud siempre ha estado presente. Recientemente colaboramos con United Way del condado de Kern y otras organizaciones de la comunidad para organizar un programa y taller de educación financiera para jóvenes”, explicó Solorio-Ruiz. A través del programa de educación financiera, los estudiantes de secundaria adquirían conocimientos de finanzas y recibían una asignación entre 500 y 1000 dólares por su participación. En su nuevo puesto, pretende colaborar con el Kern Literacy Council para incorporar más libros a la comunidad y espera colaborar con organizaciones que prioricen las necesidades que jóvenes y ciudadanos necesitan para destacar. En cuanto a los programas para jóvenes interesados en el gobierno, el alcalde les anima a contactar con sus representantes electos y preguntar por posibles prácticas o programas de voluntariado. “He tenido un par de jóvenes que participaron en un programa informal de prácticas en mi oficina, donde asistieron a reuniones del consejo, proporcionaron análisis sobre políticas y emitieron opiniones sobre estas políticas”, explicó Solorio-Ruiz. Solorio-Ruiz, como muchos vecinos de Delano, es un estudiante universitario de primera generación que es hijo de inmigrantes y está allanando el camino para la juventud del pueblo. Mientras enfrentaba la pérdida de familiares a manos de la violencia armada y combatía la adversidad en diferentes ámbitos de la vida, Solorio-Ruiz ha seguido luchando por más, demostrando la determinación y resiliencia que representa la comunidad de Delano. “Siento una enorme responsabilidad por hacerlo bien por mi comunidad. El mismo amor, cuidado y gobernanza que tuve como concejal es el mismo que tendré como alcalde. Cuando estoy allí, no me represento a mí mismo, sino a quienes han sido líderes que me precedieron, como César Chávez, Dolores Huerta y Larry Itilong”, dijo el alcalde. Al marcharse a la universidad para obtener una Licenciatura en Comunicación en Fresno State, Solorio-Ruiz se encontró de nuevo en Delano sirviendo y elevando a la comunidad que había allanado el camino para muchos como él. Al regresar de la universidad, asistió a las reuniones del consejo para conocer los problemas de su comunidad, pero también para ofrecer una nueva perspectiva que pertenece a las familias trabajadoras y que entiende los problemas a primera vista. “Sé que cuando estoy ahí arriba representando los temas que preocupan a todos los latinos, no solo a los latinos, sino a la clase trabajadora, especialmente cuando hablamos de seguridad pública. Cuestiones relacionadas con nuestra comunidad sin hogar y la creación de oportunidades laborales para todos”, dijo Solorio-Ruiz. Los datos revelan que, en agosto de 2025, la tasa de desempleo de Delano era del 14,1%, con una renta mediana registrada en 22.582. Recientemente, la ciudad de Delano ha visto nuevos desarrollos de negocios que se están construyendo a lo largo de Wollomes Avenue, con tiendas como Target abriendo en la primavera de 2026, creando más oportunidades de empleo para los vecinos.

“ESTUDIANTES” VIENE de primera página Darcey. “A ocho estudiantes les gusta la pizza”, respondió un estudiante. Alrededor de 3,300 estudiantes en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Oakland este año escolar, cerca del 10% de la población estudiantil total, inmigraron de otros países en los últimos tres años. De ellos, al menos 600 no asistieron a la escuela durante más de dos años en sus países de origen. A estos estudiantes se les suele denominar estudiantes con educación formal interrumpida, o SIFE (por sus siglas en inglés). Las razones por las que los estudiantes faltaron a la escuela varían. Algunos vivían en comunidades rurales lejos de las escuelas, por ejemplo. Para otros, era peligroso asistir a la escuela debido a la violencia de pandillas o la guerra en sus comunidades. Otros estudiantes simplemente tenían que trabajar. Cuando los estudiantes aún no dominan la lectura, la escritura o las matemáticas académicas en su idioma materno, tienen mucho más que aprender para comprender el material de nivel secundaria o preparatoria, incluso mientras están aprendiendo inglés. Pero si los materiales o el plan de estudios están diseñados para estudiantes más jóvenes, puede resultar aburrido o parecer demasiado infantil para los adolescentes. Antes de este año escolar, Darcey enseñaba inglés a estudiantes inmigrantes recientes con una amplia gama de conocimientos académicos. Algunos estudiantes leían a un nivel de séptimo u octavo grado en español, por ejemplo, mientras que otros no sabían leer en absoluto. Ella recuerda que algunos estudiantes se sentían frustrados. “Tuve un niño… Todos los días durante seis meses, me decía: ‘No puedo leer. ¿Por qué me estás dando esto?’”, dijo Darcey. “Pensaba: ‘Todos los demás aquí saben lo que está sucediendo, y yo no tengo idea de qué es esto. ¿Por qué me estás diciendo que tenga un libro en mis manos?’”. Durante años, Darcey intentó acceder a un plan de estudios diseñado especialmente para estudiantes que han tenido grandes brechas en la escolaridad. Había escuchado hablar de un plan de estudios llamado Bridges, desarrollado por investigadores del Centro de Graduados de la Universidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York. Pero cuando intentó obtener materiales de ellos, le dijeron que solo estaban disponibles para maestros en Nueva York. Julie Kessler, directora de programas para recién llegados y estudiantes de inglés en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Oakland, dijo que muchos maestros con los que ha trabajado en los distritos escolares de Oakland y San Francisco estaban frustrados por no poder acceder al plan de estudios Bridges. “Y entonces es como, ¿quién tiene una copia pirata de eso?”, dijo Kessler. “Y ha sido simplemente inaccesible para el campo”. Y Kessler dijo que hay maestros en San Rafael, Elk Grove, San Diego y Vista que lo usan, además de Oakland. Fuera de California, el plan de estudios también se está utilizando en la ciudad de Nueva York y en el condado de Prince William, Virginia. “Estamos recibiendo mucha gratitud de los maestros que dicen: ‘Oh Dios mío, finalmente algo que puedo usar con este grupo de estudiantes que se siente digno de su tiempo, que se siente respetuoso con ellos y que siente que está desarrollando las habilidades que sabemos que necesitan’”, dijo Kessler. El plan de estudios actualmente incluye alrededor de 50 días de instrucción, menos de un tercio de un año escolar. Kessler dijo que el distrito ahora está tratando de obtener más fondos del Departamento de Servicios Sociales para desarrollar 180 días completos, para que se pueda usar durante un año escolar completo. Darcey dijo que el plan de estudios ha marcado una gran diferencia. Ahora tiene clases de inglés separadas solo para estudiantes que tienen brechas en su educación. La clase comenzó el año escolar con una unidad sobre la identidad. Los estudiantes aprendieron a decir sus nombres, cuántos años tienen, de dónde son, qué idioma hablan. l defensa multicampeón español Sergio Ramos confirmó que su etapa con el club mexicano Rayados del Monterrey llegó a su fin, tras la eliminación en las semifinales del torneo Apertura 2025 ante el Toluca. La semana previa, la prensa internacional informó que Ramos había tomado la decisión de no renovar el contrato con los Rayados, que tenía vigencia hasta diciembre de 2025. Estuve en un programa de aplicación de la ley en el instituto”, dijo Edwards. “Mi profesor, Anthony Mosely, sirvió en los Marines y realmente me ayudó a prepararme para el ejército para que no entrara a ciegas.
