e are delighted to hold our fifth Business Expo -- this year, for the first time, in Prince George’s County, where the organization El Poder de Ser Mujer was born five years ago. The Business Expo is the realization of our desire to give Latino immigrant entrepreneurs a space where they can interact with hundreds of people and build their businesses. Many of the Latino entrepreneurs participating in the Expo are graduates of our Emprende Mujer program, where Latino start up business owners build capacity and gain inspiration to realize their dreams of launching and building their own businesses. More than 700 women and men have participated in Emprende Mujer and more than 70 businesses have been opened in Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia as a result of the program. We are so pleased to welcome many of these successful small business leaders to the Business Expo.
This is the fundamental objective of this space -- to promote the entrepreneurial spirit rooted in our Latino culture, in the land of opportunity, these great United States of America. It is a great a challenge to organize this event, but today we are united -- Prince George’s County, local businesses, non-profit organizations, who all believe in entrepreneurship as the base for social and economic development. A special thanks to our principal partner in this event, Employ Prince George’s and its President & CEO Walter Simmons, for your belief in us and your support. Your efforts, the work of El Poder, and your commitment to the betterment of the Latino Community in Prince George’s County and Maryland is awe-inspiring. I, along with the entire Employ Prince George’s team, are grateful to partner with El Poder, and excited about the great programming, benefits, and long term impact our partnership will have on Prince George’s County. We are equally excited that Employ Prince George’s and Prince George’s County are the host of the El Poder 5th Annual Business Expo. Launched in 2018, Employ Prince George’s is the principal workforce development service provider in Prince George’s County. Employ Prince George’s has dedicated it’s mission to being Prince George’s County’s bridge between job seekers and businesses. Employ Prince George’s manages the Prince George’s County Public Workforce System and provides a menu of services to job seekers and businesses. Through the efforts of Employ Prince George’s, the Prince George’s County Public Workforce System, and partners such as El Poder, we are on pace to serve over 40,000 job seekers and businesses in 2019. This work wouldn’t be possible without people like you, Myriam Figueroa, and organizations like El Poder. ccording to a recent study by Stanford University, small businesses created by Latina women have grown 87 percent in the last five years. Virginia and Maryland are among the top five states in Latino business creation. It is this entrepreneurial spirit of Latina women in this region that animates the growth of the organization El Poder de Ser Mujer and our signature Latino business showcase event, the Business Expo. The Business Expo was launched by El Poder de Ser Mujer five years ago with the mission to create a space for strengthening and promoting Latina

This year’s event will be held in Maryland in alliance with our main partner Employ Prince George’s. Participants will include graduates of our Emprende Mujer entrepreneurship capacitybuilding program, businesses that support our work, and organizations and government agencies with valuable information to share on resources and opportunities to support local entrepreneurs and the community at large.
With the support of Employ Prince George’s, this year’s event will be our biggest ever, including more than 60 entrepreneurs exhibiting their products and services. Also, thanks to Employ Prince George’s, the Expo will include a Job Fair. The Expo will also feature a family-friendly atmosphere, including activities for children and live music. This is why we chose to hold the Expo on a Sunday -- underscoring that this will be a fun and relaxing day in addition to an opportunity to make business connections.
