Rio Hondo held its Club Rush event this past Tuesday and Wednesday, providing clubs the chance to get new
members on board. It was not all business, though. Power 106 stopped by both days, from 11 am to 2 pm, with DJ Vital to add a soundtrack to Club Rush. Tents filled Rio’s lower quad on Tuesday and
Wednesday as the clubs set up their booths. Every program, from the French Club to Alpha Gamma Sigma, had representatives out. Clubs focused on recruiting new members on Tuesday, providing information and answer-
ing questions for interested students. Wednesday was a bit more festive. Clubs were able to sell items in an effort to raise money for their programs. Hot Cheetos with cheese,
nachos, pizza, lemonade; there were plenty of goods available for purchase at Club Rush on Wednesday. There was also a photo booth and a jumper with a slide to add some fun to the event. There was something for everyone!
Justin Valero Aims to Make a Difference

He also wants more funding for vocational schools and community colleges. “More-and-more we’re having what are known as ‘non-traditional students, where students are typically older than 23, 25, part-time… but now we’re getting kind of a combination of that, and in larger numbers,” Valero explained. “So this idea of the ‘non-traditional students’ is actually pretty conventional, it’s becoming the norm. Justin Valero held a meet-and-greet in Whittier on Saturday as part of his campaign to become California’s 57th District Assembly representtive. El Paisano was luckily able to sit down for a one-on-one chat with Valero. The 27-year-old Valero has lived in the 57th District his entire life, residing in Whittier. He is now aiming to provide better opportunities for the people of Whittier and the surrounding cities. One of Valero’s goals is to get state officials to recognize that the education vocational schools and community

The 2018 Los Angles Olympics
Are Californian’s Being Too Lax With The Possible Threat Of A Nuclear Crisis? DANIEL CAMPOS Staff Writer

With North Korea constantly testing nuclear weapons of mass destruction, we now know that the small communist country has the capability to launch a long-distance missile containing a nuclear warhead. An event that would be devastating for Guam, Hawaii or California. Several top security officials have come forward to confirm that a looming threat with regards to war in North Korea is very much possible. Ambassador Haley, known for making public statements related to any disagreements between the two countries, continued over the weekend saying that she believes “The United Nations have exhausted all of its options on trying to negotiate and compromise with North Korea and Kim Jong Un.” But what does that mean for us Californians? With no word of bunkers or any other preparation, we must be proactive in purchasing large amounts of water, oats, rice, beans and canned goods that can hold down the fort for years while being sure to restock as needed. Wholesale giant Costco sells a food package that can last between 1 to 5 years online exclusively for members. You can also take that advantage of such packages from online leader Amazon. On Sunday, fellow Californian and Democratic leader Senator Dianne Feinstein said “President Trump should not rule out a possible meeting or discussion with the Kim Jong Un dynasty pertaining to being open to discuss the possibility of ending their nuclear program.” Just this past Friday, Kim Jong and his team launched a missile that traveled 478 miles high and 2229 miles long before landing in the southernmost ocean of Japanese waters. While the Associated Press is saying this so
called test terrorized the Japanese, there’s no word on how leaders in Japan, both governmental and military, have prepared citizens for a possible attack. The Japanese joint military forces have stated the that a North Korean strike would lead to a catastrophic end to the Kim Jong regime should the dictator strike on their land. With such a possible threat why is California not preparing for such a disaster in the way victims of Harvey and Irma did, now is the time to gather all possibilities together and realize our strengths and weaknesses. With shortages in the military sector and in order to continue its world dominance as a leader in military force, the US government and military have recently welcomed more men and women into service. Just recently the maximum age for entry into the Air Force was 27, fast forward to 2017 and a man or woman can enter up to the age of 39. The Marines have maxed out their entry-level to 28 years of age. Preparing and sustaining Americans and our ground is key to this country’s continued and future success. Paraphrasing the late JFK “do what you can do for your country, not what your country can do for you.” Just recently CNN Got an exclusive inside look through underground bunkers housing our missile defense system. Our military is on call 24 hours a day seven days a week watching for any type of radioactive chemicals that could be a possible nuclear warhead. We have satellites watching radiation levels over the North Korean Peninsula and our use of the THAAD system has proven to be highly effective in many tests.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Los Angeles as host of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We still have many more years to wait for it to finally arrive. IOC also announced Paris for the 2024 games, which makes it the first time time in history that it permits two summer Olympics at once. This would also be Los Angeles third time hosting the Olympics; first in 1932 and second time in 1984.
IOC announced this final decision in Lima, Peru where Los Angeles Olympic Delegation officials presented their final bids for the 2028 games. The LA planning committee has estimated that the games will cost around 5.3 billion; under the terms of the deal that was made IOC will provide funds to Los Angeles and the whole Olympic movement for 2028;the contribution is set to be up to 2 billion according to the LA officials, “The deal, was too good to pass.” Mayor Eric Garcetti stated.
At the moment due to the delay in Awarding Los Angeles for the 2028 games there’s going to be some challenges, for instance making sure there is public interest as well as recasting deals for stadiums, arenas, and housing that was being worked on for years. As much as everyone involved in the bidding for 2024 and 2028 events wanted L.A to host the 2024 Olympic Games they are still honored to have been able to become hosts for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Whittier's Last Bookstore: "Half -Off" Books, Leaves City

After constant disputes between the business and landlord, one of the cities last general bookstore, Half-Off Books moves to Fullerton. On September 12th, they released a statement on their facebook announcing the move along with their reasoning for the relocation. They have had several complaints against the landlords, HR Property Management, about the inattentiveness of the properties structural damages. “Over the last 6+ years we’ve sent 146 emails and only received replies to 15, we’ve spent close to $50,000 on building issues that should’ve been paid by the landlord,” In the statement they continued to discuss how their rent was raised by 40

Half-off attempted to find another space in uptown Whittier but wasn't able to find a place that could accommodate their needs. “The city inspector and the roofer both informed us the original roof from 1938 was still in place, and 2 roofs had been installed over it, the most recent top layer being at least 40 years old” They will be fully moved from whittier to Fullerton by the end of September. The store has been there since 2011, after buying out the Little Old Books , which had been there since 2007. Both the owners of the store and the property owner declined to comment on the move. The New Store is at 141 W. Wilshire Ave. in Fullerton.
Valero Continued be the ‘traditional’ student.” Valero feels the “traditional” route of going from high school straight to a fouryear university isn’t really in the realm of possibility for everyone. “The problem is that the way that academia is set up, it really is set up for you to get out of high school, go straight into a four-year university, load yourself up with a ton of debt, move somewhere, do whatever experience you want to go do,” Valero continued. “But the problem is that that’s catered to an upper-middle class, upper-class tax bracket. That’s essentially what it’s made for. I don’t think that was the intention, but that’s who can actually
pull it off.” To fix this problem and get more attention on vocational schools and community colleges, Valero wants to expand Cal Grants. “We want to be able to put in something called Cal Grant Expansion. We want to put in an expansion of Cal Grants in terms of how Cal Grants are done because we tend to treat community colleges and vocational training like they are second-hand educations,” Valero said. “I think we’ve basically given this bull-pucky story that the only way you get validation in life is through a four-year degree, and that’s not true.” When asked what some of his other main focuses are, Valero mentioned health care being next on his list. “We need to be able to have coverage that is affordable and accessible for everybody. We talk about accessibility in terms of plans, but we also need to talk about accessibility in terms of actual treatment.” The last major issue Valero hopes to tackle is criminal justice reform. He feels there are many young people who are charged with crimes but are not getting the treatment they actually need. “We need to make sure that a 19-year-old kid who gets busted for having some pills of ecstasy, or gets busted with a bag of [marijuana] he is not supposed to be having; that kid goes to rehab,” Valero explained. “If the kid has, you know, a cocaine problem, the kid belongs in rehab, he doesn’t belong in prison.” Valero feels that sending these young, non-violent convicts to prison is not teaching them a lesson, but rather setting them up to be continued convicts. He provided statistics to back his belief. “[Jail] is criminal school! All it does is make you learn the tricks of the trade and the studies show that the minute you walk in [to prison], you’re 60% more likely to come back.” While Valero seems to be focusing on issues for the young, they are not an age group that goes out to vote often. I asked what he would say to the young people of the 57th Assembly district to get them out to vote. “Voting at the local level is the most powerful you can be… Your vote counts less in a presidential election; your vote counts a little bit more in a congressional election… Now you go down to a local level… Your vote goes from 1 in 150 million, to 1 in 230 thousand. Your vote becomes that much more powerful, so you can actually effect an election.”

Marijuana Smoking Rates Drops In Teenagers NOAH GARICA News Editor

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health released its 2016 findings, showing that Marijuana use in teens has significantly dropped. The data is part of a general information report that records usage of alcohol and drugs, as well as the trends of mental health. The study states that the percentage of use in adolescents dropped lower than the data recorded from 2009 to 2014. The sample group for the research consists of about 67,500 Americans, ages 12 and older. The group is the most likely to partake in the substances, as well as the most likely to develop mental issues. Due to the high amount of mental development that occurs during this time frame, research has been extensively studied on this demographic. An article from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that eight percent of 35 to 44-year-olds used marijuana regularly in 2014, a larger amount than teens since 2002. A stark contrast to the idea of weed being a “gateway” drug.

China has set up its first “commercial” use of quantum internet in the northern area of Shandong. This is their latest move in advancing themselves in technology, with claims of this being considered “Hack Proof”. This isn’t the first time they’ve set up a “Hack Proof” communication early this month they did they same thing with Quantum Communications, with sending unhackable information with using only water. China prides themselves for being on the forefront in the development of quantum Technology. Early in august they successfully sent it’s first unbreakable quantum code, in a prototype satellite to earth. This phenomenal breakthrough was so amazing that the pentagon themselves
said it was “notable advance” The Quantum Internet has been set up exclusively by government and official users in Shandong capital Jinan. Although it is not clear on how the system would be operated on such a huge scale. What this network provides is top shelf protection when using telephone and data communications. So you can communicate without the fear of someone tapping into your network. It’s
expected to be connected to Beijing-Shanghai quantum network. Even though China is at the forefront with this technology that doesn’t mean other countries haven’t been studying this as well. Samsung’s new car battery is changing the game for electric vehicles. With many countries around the world banning gas powered cars, electric cars are finally coming into demand. These countries include China, India, France, Britain and Norway. In Samsung’s latest announcement, they revealed that there new “multifunctional battery packs” which were teased at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, which function up to 430 miles on a single charge. This innovation is ultimately changing the way people look at electric cars. This would get you from L.A. to Vegas with over a 100 miles to spare. Though Samsung’s new batteries look
impressive on paper it’s still unknown what type and size of car will fit this innovative battery. While much information is still yet to come on the new multifunctional battery pack it has some similarities to the battery used in Tesla’s Model 3 which is called 2170 battery cell. A spokesperson for Samsung was quoted in a press release stating, “Its users can change the number of modules as they want as if they place books on a shelf. For example, if 20 modules are installed in a premium car, it can go 600 to 700 kilometers. If 10 to 12 modules are mounted on a regular sedan, it can run up to 300 kilometers.” This is just the beginning of the electric vehicle’s growing presence in the mainstream; as people choose new alternative sources of energy.

Hey Roadrunners welcome back to Rio Hondo for the Fall 2017 semester. One thing that a lot of students have trouble with is studying, something that we all need to do to in order to become successful academically. Google defines studying as “devote time and attention to acquiring knowledge on (an academic subject), especially by means of books.” Lots of people have their own way of studying, but I’ll tell you 10 study tips for the school. Getting together with your peers and forming a study group is a great study tip. It’s very helpful discussing what you had just gone over with fellow classmates so that way you’ll have a better understanding. It’s also great because there might be something you may of missed that one of your peers caught, and they’ll be able to show you. Another great tip is going to your professor during his or her office hours. Usually on the first day of school all professors hand out a syllabus with their office hours and location on it. They will have no problem helping out one of their students.. Who else is better to ask than the proffesor themselves? They know the material better than any other student in the class. Taking good notes is the backbone of succeeding in college. You have to make sure that your writing is clean and precise to what your professor is talking about. It’s common for students to feel rushed during a lecture and

As long as you go back and rewrite your notes so you can better understand them later. Most professors will let you record lectures if you ask them. Students have found this method to be effective because it puts you right back to when they were teaching. One or two students might ask an interesting question that you may have forgotten to write down, but now you can because you have the class on audio. It’s important that whoever your professor is gives you permission to do so. If you ever need a nice silent spot to crack open your books and study, our library offers study rooms to anyone
who comes in and reserves one. These rooms are most effective because it’s just you or however you have to study. The library alone is a quite place and the study rooms are even more silent, so you won’t have any distractions. Use one of the oldest tricks in the book is flash cards. This is a study method that has been around almost as long as schools been invented. The reason why this is such a good method is because, it simulates a test. Write down the question on one side and the answer on the other. It’s a solid method that works for almost every subject. Pace yourself try not to overwhelm yourself. It’s
common for students to just devote hours to study all at once. This could be dangerous because you might get sleepy,bored, or daze off. Study in shifts for about 15-30 mins at a time, with 5 minute breaks in between so you can wind down. You might find it very helpful because you’re trying to cram everything within a long time. Have someone test you. The only way to truly know if you understand the topic is by taking the test right. As soon as you feel like you completely understand whatever it is your studying, give a list of questions to someone and have them ask you. Try to get as many right as you possi-

bly can. It’ll boost your self esteem and make you more confident come test day. Lastly, head down to the LRC. They offer tons of help and offer to tutor you all free of charge. All you need to do is sign in and ask for help it’s that simple. They even offer computers for you to use for whatever school needs you may have. They have resources to help you in whatever you need.

Certain ideas might find themselves absent from public discussion. Shunned to the realm of taboo as things dealing with intimacy so often are. No better topics, than age, experience, and the sanctity which we choose to view these principles of accumulation than to illustrate this. The act of asking a woman her age these days is about as misunderstood as the act of having to ask a man his intentions. And why, is that? If people are genetically predisposed to find themselves only wanting to be in the company of others with a shared interest they can understand, what makes it any different with regards to relationships of a romantic nature? Deep down inside, what makes you secretly want to talk to that attractive stranger? While your inner circle of “girlfriends,” “homies,” “bruh bruhs,” or whatnot, are seemingly ever so present when the topic is a potential love
interest’s aesthetic appeal, are they ever there to call you out on something that is potentially dangerous to your wellbeing? I read a comment the other day that sneered, “if her age isn’t on the clock then she can get the….” ability to be cherished all the same as anybody else perhaps? Simple minded opinions from boys who adamantly check the ‘gram each morning whilst losing life loving lackluster ladies, believing that the world is at their fingertips, is what I chalk this up to. But these days, it is worth noting that with the advent of social media, that may be somewhat true. The world is literally at everybody’s fingertips. Before we attempt to speak on age differences in romantic relationships, we must choose to see that Mother Nature, and the feelings she arouses within us, knows no bounds nor organization. It is only realistic to remind ourselves that such a unit of measure as organized as “age,” is manmade. Logic and reason; how-
ever are not manmade and never have been. They’re the innate ways in which we choose to survive as best we can. With that being said, don’t let your imagination kill your common sense. Falling into love and tripping into lust are entirely different actions. If it’s not something you understand, or plan on attempting to understand, then simply put, it’s not for you. Over time, it was once the societal norm to see a drastic age difference between lovers, we have newfound ethics to say otherwise. Age is synonymous with experience on this Earth, the very lessons of which, may never be afforded to someone years younger. To rob someone of their time in my eyes, is a crime as grave as any. Because we can’t distinguish beauty from danger, it’s important to note that what may appear as seemingly perfect today, can be disastrous tomorrow. Being that we have chosen to live life abiding by time and reason, we should conduct ourselves accordingly.
No matter his age, if his appetite for appeasement is forever un- satiated, with past offenses to set precedent in regards to his character, if he’s a “locker room talker,” then he, is too young for you. I reckon that, no matter her age, if she’s more than reasonably swayed by your opinions and believes you to be important as air itself, heeding your words like gospel, then she, is too young for you. Love, is futile if you ever find yourself in need of a facade to don. Heart was always meant to be worn on the sleeve and nowhere else. It makes no sense to live a life where all you Ciara hundred and one regrets to be had in the future.
The Double Edged Sword of Makeup

Makeup is a hard topic to talk about due to the deep history surrounding it and implications it has within society today. Makeup has been around for approximately 12,000 years going back to the ancient Egyptians who used it to decorate bodies in different colors and scents. In the past some people thought makeup had healing powers or was a form of witchcraft to

stay away from. As time has gone on and the makeup industry has grown, it has evolved into something that is often advertised towards women and girls as a way to hide imperfections and that is problematic. While companies have put in the effort towards being more inclusive there is still a lot of issues lying within how makeup is viewed. Often times makeup profits off the insecurities of primarily women and girls. Phrases like “Your Lips But
Better” are seen regularly in Sephora Stores and Ulta Beauty shops. There’s a strong idea placed in makeup that it’s supposed to fix problem areas. That can create issues in people causing them to think they need it, even then they might not be able to achieve some looks. Advertisements for makeup can often be a little deceitful, like mascara ads that show a model wearing their product while wearing false eyelashes. It seems a bit
pointless to not show how well a product can do on its own. It creates this level of beauty that to someone not looking at the fine print could think is achievable, only to not end up with similar results. While makeup does try to be more inclusive they don’t always have an array of foundations for girls of darker skin tones and even high end products aren’t always good at it. Despite efforts makeup is still seen by the majority to be a thing only the ladies can partake in, which is interesting considering at one point in history men wearing makeup was seen as a common thing. Makeup brings lot of people together, groups of people will go to events where makeup is celebrated and no one is ridiculed for it. For some makeup is a way to express their creative side. It can bring joy to people it has created communities where people just enjoy and feel confident in themselves. Once someone gets to the point where they are wearing makeup for the genuine joy it brings them, that’s where the rest of it doesn’t matter. Makeup is what you make of it, so make the most of it.

Tell me do you scare easily? Do you deem yourselves one of the few brave souls to survive Hollywood Horror Nights? Well if you do this is the place for you, only if you’re up for the challenge. I must say they seem to be going all out this year, witnessing first hand, the two newest mazes they have to offer. You’re in for a treat. The first maze I had the luxury of seeing was American Horror Story: Roanoke. Unfortunately I stopped watching AHS after season two, this maze alone makes me want to go back and rewatch the season. It’s incredible to see how much detail went into all of the little things it makes it so immersive, from the wall designs to even the plates on a table. You have to admire all the little details, they really go all out to make sure you live out what you saw on TV. Don’t get too comfortable looking at all the little details. In almost every corner there is someone patiently waiting to scare the soul out of your body. Be on the lookout for Pig Man, rumor has it that he’s on the loose and is out for blood. Escaping him may be harder than it seems, if you manage to escape his wrath do not trust the nurses to help at all! They may look the part, but I can assure you they are not there to help. If you’re a true die hard fan of the series you may remember the fake commercials for that season, don’t be surprised if you see some of them come to life in the maze. After witnessing the AHS maze, I found myself in a “game” by the puppet master himself Jigsaw! If you know anything about modern day horror films, you know that the Saw franchise sets the tone for gore filled movies everywhere. The moment you enter this horrific maze, you’re introduced to multiple screens with his players suffering trying to escape while Billy stares you down. This maze is a combination of the films that make you relive and watch all of the iconic kills all at once. Be ready to see all, including a new kill room that will appear in the upcoming Jigsaw movie set to debut mid-October. All of the effects used in this maze are practical and well choreographed. It’ll sure keep you on your toes after completing the maze. Just like the previous maze always be on the lookout and
Universal Horror Nights has been scaring people of all ages for 20 years since 1997. remember.. behind every corner someone is watching. You may face some familiar threats from the older movies, with Billy lurking he’s watching… watching you. It could be a copycat killer or Jigsaw himself. The number of scares in this maze is too much to list. All I have to say is good luck. I had the honor of speaking to John Murdy, Creative Director and Producer of Universal Studios Hollywood’s “Halloween Horror Nights.” We talked about the event in immense detail. The amount of blood and sweat he put into this is unbelievable, working from sunrise to sundown. He personally goes through every maze twice and makes sure that they’re up to his standards. Murdy told me when he watches horror movies like it’s homework, noting down every detail he likes from the sound effects to the typos on a book that’s only in frame for a second. Even goes out of his way to cast scarers which is quite odd, but effective. He has them scare a chair without touching it, a method that seems to work like a charm. What he’s doing seems to be very effective as sales have gone up every year. I highly recommend you go to Horror Nights this year to see and experience all the incredible attractions and mazes.

With the fall season beginning September 22nd, retail stores along with amusement parks have already begun to decorate their walls and displays in the spirit of Halloween. One major contributor that helps bring the horror side to the costumed-themed holiday to many fans of both horror and cinema are the creators and staff at Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights. The event of Horror Nights has been scaring up the fall season since its debut back in October 9th, 1997 and since then has been an annual event that brings in hundreds of fans to enjoy the creativity that’s put into the mazes and actors that bring the attrac-
tions to life. Heather Mann, Public Relations Coordinator for Universal Studios Hollywood, recently announced the all-new College Thursdays Terror Pass for $99. The newly announced pass grants the holder access to each of the Horror Nights events held every Thursday night up until the final night leading on November 4th. All that is required to purchase the new pass is an .edu email address; however, if there is an interest in acquiring one of these passess, Mann suggests to make your purchase in advance for “these coveted passess will sell out.” In only paying $99 for the unlimited selected nights, college students have an amazing deal on their hands to take advantage of
when regular tickets for the halloween event range from $69 to $159. This years Horror Nights event has mazes that are inspired from wellknown franchises such as American Horror Story, The Shining, Ash vs. Evil Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Saw, Insidious, and an attraction from Blumhouse Studios. As each year passes, Universal has hit the mark when it comes to bringing in both old and new franchises to gain inspiration from. This year looks to be no different and with the announced College Thursdays Terror Pass, Halloween just got a lot more exciting and affordable for any college student looking to celebrate the holiday with a good scare.

Street League Skateboarding Comes to Southern California

Street league skateboarding (SLS) was founded by Rob Dyrdeck in 2010, it was organized to accept street skateboarding into amateur skateboarder’s lives. It’s been active for 7 years now but it has been impacting not only professional street skateboarders, but also amateurs who want to get into the skateboarding scene. SLS partnered with Tampa Bay skatepark as a long-term deal for a premium global qualification system. Practice day for the athletes started
on Thursday, September 14 that are skating in the competition, the first half of the day female athletes practiced and the biggest star there was Leticia Bufoni. It was her comeback after last year’s SLS accident during competition. The whole crowd was excited to see her back in the game. After the womens practice run ended, the mens practice run began and a lot of big names were there like Nyjah Huston, Louis Lopez, Chris Cole, and finally Shane O’neill. Everybody cheered for Nyjah’s name he was a celebrity among the young crowd,
they praised him when he landed a kickflip or a 360 ollie out on the skating zone. Their practice run finished at 7:30 but most of the competitors left early, and it was just Nyjah, Shane, and Louis. The following day was competition day and the skaters were in the zone during their practice runs. Everyone was serious but respectful to one another, they helped each other whenever they bailed on a trick or when they lose contact of their board. Same with the mens practice session. As the finals approached for the womens competition they let the crowd in on their

seats at Galen Center in USC, everybody was excited to see them compete. During the very end of the womens competition it was Lacey Baker behind Leticia Bufoni, as Bufoni a female role model and favorite she lost against Baker. It didn’t matter to her at the end of the day she congratulated her as a friend. The mens competition was underway and the crowd when ecstatic when they were introducing the skateboarders who were going to compete this year. Once it began Louis Lopez the L.A native was crushing it on all skate categories. Lopez
was the favorite, he was in first place while Huston and O’neill were below him. His luck changed at the end when Huston was in first place when he pulled a kickflip and tailslide. At the very end Lopez had to beat what Huston did, but didn’t and bailed. The crowd was in shock and disappointed at what they have witnessed since he was a favorite. Nyjah Huston won the Super crown placing 1st place, Shane O’Neill 2nd, and kelvin Hoefler ending in 3rd. Nevertheless, the crowd and his skating peers congratulated him on his victory.

Women’s Volleyball Lose Home Game to San Diego City

The Lady Roadrunners suffered their eighth loss of the season on Wednesday evening as the San Diego City Knights pranced into the Rio Hondo Gym and won in three straight sets. The sweep looks lopsided on paper, yet the Roadrunners were in contention for all three sets. Mental errors made the difference as the Knights stayed composed throughout the match to win in cool fashion. “Looking at it statistically, offensively we did our job,”
said head coach Teddi Esko, “But defensively, we didn’t execute our plan. We didn’t dig enough balls. We didn’t stop them at the net like we intended and these things hurt us.” Playing within the system is one of Coach Esko’s main focuses for winning games. In order for it to work though, Esko mentioned that every individual needs to do its job and that’s something the Lady Roadrunners lacked. “We were a mess. We’re a team that’s still lacking confidence and ability to rebound when we make a mistake and it’s a process. And we’re working with the team on
that. The capability is there,” said the Lady Roadrunners head coach. The loss on Wednesday makes it a 3-8 record for the Roadrunners who look to fix things in their next five preseason matches before switching attention to conference play beginning Oct. 4 at Pasadena City College. “We’re going to get in the gym and keep drilling them,” said Esko, “If we can make those corrections in the training sessions we’re going to be fine. Offensively we played well but we need to tie all of our rules together.” Despite the loss, the Lady Roadrunners did have a few

positives to take into their next match at San Diego Mesa on Sept. 20. Offense was one of them and most of the production came from 5’10” sophomore, outside hitter from South Hills High School, Bree Newton. A few serving aces mixed with numerous kills and defensive plays kept the Sunny Hills graduate’s team in the game but the Knights’ quality manifested itself more than Rio’s over the three set span. Decent games from 5’0 freshman, libero from Covina High School, Sara Harding, and freshmen setters Yaeli Sanchez (5’4 from Lincoln HS) and Mia Torres (5’4 from
Montebello HS), were also positives. The Lady Roadrunners must play better as a group, however, in order to continue making progress.

The Rio Hondo Roadrunners men’s water polo team suffered a close defeat to the Chaffey Panthers after rallying back against the them Thursday, September 13. The Roadrunners were looking for a victory after a four consecutive tough losses, but found themselves in a familiar setting as they hosted Chaffey college where it looked the game was going to be over
quick. Chaffey hastily took a solid lead in the first period by scoring five goals to just Rio’s one. Some strung together defensive stops and overall 5 saves from Rio’s goalie, number 1 Hennasy Avila, kept the Chaffey from running away with the game in the first half from their extremely offensive oriented play they showcased. “We knew going into the game Chaffey likes to drive and keep constant motion on offense. So we practiced defending drive and picks. Trying to recreate
their offense during practice.” Number 14, Jacobo Garrido, who scored two goals said about preparation for this game and what he expected. After half time is when Rio started to come alive and the momentum was shifting. After a few drives and successful scores from the guest team the Roadrunners started mounting the comeback by stringing together some goals keeping the game competitive in the third quarter. The fourth quarter left no one sitting in the stands as the Roadrunners took the game

pened during the game. The Roadrunners move to 1-7 so far during this season. When asked on how he feels about this season so far Garrido had this to say: “For conference we are right in the middle. Not on top but not at the bottom either. Throughout the beginning of the season we lost a couple of key players due ineligibility but that doesn’t matter now because we’re competitive we just need to close.”
