The Los Angeles Dodgers are back in the World Series after a 5-1 win against the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday, Oct. 20 in game seven of the National League Championship Series. They’re now tasked with taking on the Boston Red Sox for the World Series Championship. The Dodgers got off to their worst start in 42 years this season with a 2-6 record. Adding to the bad start was also finding out that their All-Star shortstop, Corey Seager, was going to be out for the entire season. The Dodgers had to find a way to scrap wins together. They had to start playing the quality baseball that led them to Game 7 of the National Championship. The Dodgers had their 24-year-old rising star Walker Buehler on the mound to pitch in a Game 7 winner take all. Milwaukee started strong in
Saturday’s game. With one out in the first inning Buehler faced the National League Most Valuable Player, Christian Yelich who hit a solo home run that got the home fans cheering early in the game. Dodger fans had nothing to worry about. Buehler had given up a run in the first inning in each of his last 13 starts but going 8-5 with a 2.62 ERA in that span. In the top of the second inning Dodgers shortstop Manny Machado was up to bat and with a full count,he bunted to third base for a single. Up came Cody Bellinger who hit a big two run home runs for the Dodgers to take the lead 2-1. Buehler had gone 4.2 innings giving up six hits with one earned run while striking out seven. Julio Urias took over in the bottom of the fifth inning, it was the first time he had pitched back to back games in his career. With two out and a runner on second, with Yelich up, Urias was put
in a big spot to get the out. Yelich hit a deep fly ball to the left field warning track but Chris Taylor made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch to save the game-tying run. The next inning would all but seal the deal for the Dodgers. With runners on second and third base with two outs, right fielder Yasiel Puig hit a three-run homerun that put one foot in the World Series door for the Dodgers. qAfter that, it was the Dodgers bullpen that shut down the Brewers hitting. In the ninth inning, Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw came in to close out the game and send the Dodgers back to the World Series for the second year in a row. This is the Dodgers second time advancing to the World Series in back-to-back years. Will their 1988 World Series win repeat in 2018? Stay tuned. Game one is today, Oct. 23 at Fenway Park in Boston. First pitch is set for 5:09 p.m.

Sears Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

After years of debts and declining sales, Sears Holdings is filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. CEO Eddie Lampert will also be stepping down, but remains as a chairman. Along with filing for bankruptcy Sears Holdings is closing 142 unprofitable stores, including both Sears and KMart’s. This number will be added to the 46 stores already heading for closure announced this August.

Sears outlet in Portland Oregon, 2017- Sears Financial Holding company Chairman Eddie Lampert, is currently in discussions with multiple unnamed fanciers to help carry the company through the year, a decision that is going to be heavily weighed upon whether or not they do well this holiday season.
Within the next two weeks, according to a court filing, liquidation sales at the additional stores will begin. “As we look toward the holiday season, Sears and Kmart stores remain open for business and our dedicated associates look forward to
serving our members and customers,” Lampert said in a statement. Including both the Sears and KMart the company currently has 687 stores remaining. Amid the financial troubles, Sears has made moves to stabilize the issue including
the closing of hundreds of stores in recent years. The first decision to downsize and curve loss came August 23 with plans to close 13 KMart stores and 33 Sears stores in November.

Students defrauded by for-profit colleges scored a victory with U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss ruling on Tuesday, October 16. Moss ruled that the U.S. Department of Education, led by Betsy DeVos, must implement immediately an Obamaera student loan forgiveness rule. A rule that she stated, according to Boston Globe, makes it too easy for students to cancel their student loans and that she has fought to kill. Claiming that it was also unfair to taxpayers. This lawsuit first began when the attorney generals from 19 states and the District of Columbia, sued U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and the U.S. Department of Education for delaying a borrower protection rule. According to Forbes,“The lawsuit was filed in federal district court in Washington, D.C. and alleged that DeVos illegally delayed the implementation of the borrower defense to repayment rule, which was intended by the Obama administration to make it easier for defrauded student loan borrowers to receive student loan debt forgiveness.” DeVos said she still “respects the role of the court and accepts the court’s decision” but, they continue to search for ways that can benefit both the borrower’s and taxpayers. DeVos proposed creating a new rule for student loan forgiveness that will cancel a portion of a borrower’s student loan debt based on the income of students. According to the Department of Education, this could save 12.7 billion for the federal government over the next 10 years. But, the soonest time The Department of Education can replace the Obama-era rules and start implementing the new regulations is July 2020. According to BostonGlobe, “Officials said at the time that their regulation would be finalized by Nov. 1, the deadline for it to take effect next summer. But this month, officials said the department would miss that deadline.”

Hawking is completely against AI. In fact, according to business insider, Hawking readily acknowledges the good that comes from such technological advancements: “Recent landmarks such as self-driving cars, a computer winning at “Jeopardy!,” and the digital personal assistants Siri, Google Now, and Cortana are merely
symptoms of an IT arms race fuelled by unprecedented investments and building on an increasingly mature theoretical foundation.” He also warned that the short term effect of AI depends on who controls it, the long-term effect depends on whether it can be controlled. But AI isn’t the only thing he worried about.
According to his book, he also worries about an environmental catastrophe wiping out the earth. This comes out as big news after Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report warning that we only have 12 years to make changes massive enough to keep global warming to moderate levels.
Electric Chewing Gum Zaps Your Tongue To Create Virtual Flavor Hit EVELYN VARGAS

Japanese scientists are producing chewing gum that zaps your tongue with electricity that keeps the flavor going on forever. The name of this pain free device is “unlimited electric gum”. This Japanese device is very similar to ordinary gum but the difference is that a small device is built into it almost about the diameter of a super small coin that gets covered with saliva and it starts doing the scientific effect. This gum uses the effect called ‘piezoelectric’ -this is a phenomenon in which some materials produce electric charge when pressured on. When the gum is being chewed it creates a minimal current that tricks the tongue into thinking and experiencing various types of flavors. As of right now it produces salty or bitter taste. Stephen Hawking, who died at age 76 of a degenerative neurological disease earlier this year, had a final message for everyone according to Vox. “If robots don’t get us, climate change will.” Hawkings offers his final thought in a book recently released on October 16 called, “ Brief Answers To The Big Questions.” “Hawking’s book is ultimately a verdict on humanity’s future. At first blush, the verdict is that we’re doomed. But dig deeper and there’s something else here too, a faith that human wisdom and innovation will thwart our own destruction, even when we seem hellbent on bringing it about,” stated Vox. His ultimate warning to everyone was to be careful with the rise of artificial intelligence. Although AI is still in its beginning stages, he worries that that it can either be the best or the worst thing to happen to humanity. As well as have it be the last thing to happen to us. This doesn’t mean that

Researchers are striving for those flavors with the use of a savory taste found in foods such as fermented soy products, cheese, and shiitake mushrooms. The Japanese researchers believe that when those flavors get added to the “unlimited electric gum” it will attract many people and the gum will be a success.

Many things can be endangered by sea level rises. For instance, homes, businesses, buildings, and coastal infrastructure. A recent study suggests that approximately 80% of World Heritage sites along the Mediterranean coast are at risk. The areas that could possibly be affected and targeted are the medieval city of Rhodes in Greece, the Kasbah of Algiers in Algeria, Venice, and Italy’s saltwater lagoon as well. A recent analysis of 49 showed that such low-elevation sites reveals that by the year 2100, all or partly most of the 40 will be endangered by storm surges that surpass the level of a 100 year old flood, and as much as 46 of them will be tragically and highly threatened by coastal erosion. However, nations that are seeking to protect and guard these sites should not wait any longer and must address the problems as soon as possible, and not in another 80 or more years, according to researchers from Nature Communications. Researchers from the Nature Communications have stated that because 37 of the flood-prone sites and 42 of the erosion prone sites are already said to be vulnerable and very damaged, although to a much smaller degree they will eventually be later in the near future. A possible solution to avoid this tragedy is to move to higher ground and this could save at risk sites, and some monuments, etc. Unfortunately, it will be impossible for large archaeological sites or large urban areas. Bigger structures will need to be protected in other ways, according to researchers. Simple solutions are to build sea walls but others are more extreme. As of now Venice is building an overall cost that is around €6 billion of series of gates that can only temporarily isolate the city’s lagoon from the Adriatic Sea in exceptionally high tides. Venice’s attempt to build the series of gates to help the problem is just one step needed to try to resolve the sea-level issue the planet has been burdened with. It’ll be interesting to see how things play it in the long term.

From collectible figurines and statues to numerous pieces of apparel, the characters from Halloween Town are out in the public eye in shapes and forms. Some of the more hardcore fans even have characters from the movie tattooed on the bodies to show their love and support for the film. Jack Skellington, Sally, Oogie Boogie, and the three trick or treaters (Lock, Shock, and Barrel) are among the more popular characters that fans tend to gravitate towards when pikcing out their accessories to wear.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the 1993 stop-motion animated film “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” has been a decorative staple within Disney’s Anaheim theme park. Most mistakenly confused with being directed by Tim Burton, which he did write the story, the movie was directed by Henry Selick with music written and composed by Danny Elfman. Having collaborated with each other since their time working on the 1989 film “Batman,” Burton and Elfman have established a working relationship, which for the most part, have produced nothing short of dark and magical results. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” hasn’t always seen the success it now knows among the Disney fan
base. When first released, the film was considered a failure earning $175,022 during its opening weekend from an estimated budget of $18,000,000. As the years have passed, and with added sales from various home video releases, the film has garnered a cult-classic status that other films have accomplished throughout their lifetimes to-date. Now, Jack Skellington and company share the stage and spotlight with the likes of Mickey Mouse, Iron Man, Darth Vader. Two of the latter which have been acquired by Walt Disney pictures and are billion dollar franchises on their own terms. October 29, 2018 marks the stop-motion film’s 25th anniversary, and with that comes many forms of celebrations for fans to enjoy. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” Live is returning to the Hollywood
Bowl for another live interpretation of the film with composer Elfman performing the singing roles of Jack Skellington. Other notable actors returning to reprise their roles for the performance include Catherine O’Hara as Sally and Ken Page as Oogie Boogie. Due to popular demand, a third date has been added to the weekend prior to this year’s Halloween day. The concert will run from October 26 to the 28th. As stated before, Disneyland has been incorporating the theme of the movie with that of their own attraction The Haunted Mansion. Being dubbed “Haunted Mansion Holiday,” visitors of the already popular Haunted Mansion can see most of their favorite characters from Halloween Town within the walls of the mansion. A special treat for guests who are willing
to wait to board the ride, is that every year the engineers and artists at Disney create a uniquely themed gingerbread house that’s displayed in the dancehall room of the mansion. To go with the sweet creation, they also add the scent of actual gingerbread when passing through the scene for added effect. Other ways for fans to show their support for the film are plenty of choices of merchandise, most of which are apparel with the banner 25th anniversary front and center to mark the occasion. As with many other anniversary editions, Disney has also re-released the film itself with a sing-aalong feature for fans to enjoy in the privacy of their own home. Or not. Another great way to enjoy the eerie yet magical feel of the film is by listening to the soundtrack, again, written and composed
by famed collaborator Danny Elfman. For those who grew up in the early 1980’s, would recognize Elfman’s vocal tracks from his now separated band Oingo Boingo. One bit of advice for Oingo Boingo fans and of the composer would be to stay after the live concert for an encore performance by two of the original members of the band, including Elfman himself. The film itself may not gravitate to many people out there but it has surely been made a must go to for those who truly like to celebrate the spooky holiday. So be sure to insert your “Nightmare Before Christmas” DVD, Bluray, or CD this year and singa-along with The Pumpkin King and the rest of the citizens of Halloween Town.

Netf lix Adds 7 Million Subscribers to Service

Netflix gained seven million subscribers in their third quarter this year, earning themselves a total of 137 million subscribers. Most of their subscriber growth was made up by overseas memberships. 1.96 million domestic users signed up for the service compared with 5.87 million international additions. Netflix exceeded their
estimates of five million subscribers for this quarter that included the months of July-September. This quarters financial reports were greater than last quarters numbers in April-June. In the second quarter, Netflix declared it added 5.2 million net new subscribers, which is 1 million shy of the company’s internal estimates and the expectations of many Wall Street analysts. According to USA Today, eMarketer media analyst Paul
Verna said, “Netflix’s strong quarter will at least temporarily put to rest questions over the long-term viability of its business and shift focus to the competition, which continues to significantly lag the streaming giant.” Netflix, the world’s largest paid online TV network, expects to gain another 9.4 million subscribers in the the months of October-December. This would be the fourth and
final quarter of the year. With an expectation of 7.6 million subscribers being international. This year so far, Netflix has made a revenue of four billion dollars, compared to last years revenue of three billion. USA Today quoted Reed Hastings, CEO of the company, on the increase of competition: “As internet entertainment grows, more companies see the large opportunity

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga to Reprise Roles in “Annabelle 3”

Now with the two characters taking on a new case that hits closer to home, The Warrens will have to muster up whatever strength they have left to save their daughter’s soul from the evil doll, Annabelle.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will reprise their roles as the Warrens in The Conjuring spinoff, the untitled Annabelle Three movie. Wilson and Farmiga appeared as the infamous real-life paranormal investigators in the first Conjuring in 2013. Since the release of the
first movie the amount of films in what New Line is referring to as the Conjuring Universe has totaled up to five films, the latest being The Nun which grossed $359 million worldwide being the highest of all the films. The Annabelle spin off series began in 2014, but the first appearance of the haunting doll was in the first film In that film we learn the doll was originally owned by two nurses who got the
doll second hand as a gift, however things take a turn for the strange when they find the doll seemingly moving both itself and drawing on the walls. Upon further investigation they are falsely told the doll has a child spirit in it which they allow live with them. However that turns out to be a mistake and the Warrens come in and take the doll away. The third film will pick up with that small piece of
information according to Deadline. The doll which is brought to the Warrens’ artifact room, where the couple keeps haunted memorabilia, will apparently awaken the evil that dwells there and focus its attention on the Warrens’ daughter Judy. The movie will be about the young girl, her teenage babysitter cousin, and the cousin’s friend fighting against the doll. Mckenna Grace is set
to play Judy and Madison Iseman will also star in the film. Gary Dauberman is not only the script writer, but will also be making his directorial debut with the movie. James Wan and Peter Safran are producing for separate companies. Executive producers are Michael Clear and Michelle Morrissey. Filming for the project is well underway and the project is slated to be released July 3, 2019.

Trick or treat! It’s the boogeyman, returning to the big screen after his theatrical debut back in 1978. The story follows Michael Myers, a sixyear-old boy who commits a gruesome murder on AllHallows-Eve. 15 years after committing the murder of his eldest sister, Myers escapes the mental institution and heads for Haddonfield in search for his next kill. Since
the original film debuted, it’s had several sequels with 10 different directors. The eleventh installment of Halloween has been produced by Blumhouse Productions, who have brought films like “Split,” “Get Out” and “Happy Death Day” to life. The story will disregard the previous films. It will serve as a direct sequel to the original despite the several years gap. “Halloween” director David Gordon Green has since transitioned a complete
360 from comedy films like “Pineapple Express” and “The Sitter” to horror. The film is set 40 years after the initial confrontation between heroine Laurie Strode and Michael Myers. Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle have returned to reprise their iconic roles. “Halloween” brought back that classic feel to the new adaptation. The film follows Laurie Strode and how her last encounter with Michael forever scarred her life.
Without spoiling too much of the plot regarding this iconic sequel, be warned for the boogeyman is coming for you. The first film had a total of 5 executions by “The Shape” while in 2018 Haddonfield the deaths doubled. The viewers got to see a vulnerable, yet, badass side of Strode that they’ve never seen before. Without a doubt, the film topped expectations, measuring up to the its origin film. A character that will surely captivate your
heart is Julian portrayed by Jibrail Nantambu. Ultimately the best new character to be brought in. Be prepared to laugh, scream, gasp and applaud. If you choose to watch the film be warned it might not be suitable for children. Whatever you do, remember to run and never look back. Who knows if somebody may be lurking in the shadows. Fun fact: the film was released on October 19, which is Michael Myers’ 61st birthday.

lanning a movie marathon, but not quite sure what to watch yet? There are many classics, remakes, and a few unfamiliar and alluring films that will scare the bejeezus out of you. Not through gore, but through inevitable fear. Here are our top ten picks for you. The Shining is a 1980 classic horror film based on the works of Stephen King. The Torrance family moves into what seems to be the perfect home. Once a hotel, but what they don’t know is that the hotel has a dark past. The hotel’s previous caretaker went insane, killed his family and then himself. As supernatural forces begin to deteriorate Jack Torrance’s sanity. One question remains: will history repeat itself? Interview with a Vampire is a classic film from 1994 starring Brad Pitt as a human, Louis de Pointe du Lac who blames himself for his brother’s death. Seeking to commit suicide,

Louis catches the attention of Lestat de Lioncourt (Tom Cruise), a vampire seeking for meaning in his life. Lestat turns Louis against his will, eventually turning a 5-year old child by the name of Claudia(Kirsten Dunst) to join their “family”. Though the movie falls under the genre of Drama/Fantasy, it is a must-see for Halloween. Raw is a French-Belgian horror drama film following Justine- a young vegetarian starting her first semester at veterinary school with her older sister Alexia. The sisters participate in a hazing ritual where the girls are forced to eat raw rabbit kidneys. At first, Justine refuses, but with some convincing, she eats it and soon after she develops a taste for raw meat, specifically human flesh. The Conjuring is a 2013 American supernatural film that takes place in 1971 Rhode Island. Roger and Carolyn Perron move into a farmhouse with their five daughters: Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy, and April as well as their dog Sadie who refuses to enter the home.

While playing, one of the girls discover a boardedup entrance to a cellar and shortly after, paranormal events begin to occur. If you like this movie, you’ll like the sequel The Conjuring 2, and a spin-off prequel, The Nun. The Babadook starts off with Amelia Vanek, a widowed mother of rambunctious 6-year-old Samuel. Sam begins to display erratic behavior, talking to an imaginary monster. He asks his mother to read him a pop-up storybook, Mister Babadook, which describes a humanoid monster that torments its victims once they become aware of its existence. To skip college or not that is the question Generation Z is asking themselves. There is currently a new trend of students, born between 1995 to 2010, deciding not to carry on into higher education. The reasoning varies with each group, but some reasons for this change is that this generation fears debt. And this fear is valid. According to the Federal Reserve, student loans currently hit $1.53 trillion dollars. Students don’t want to add on to that number and
decide drowing in debt is not the best idea for education plans. Another reason is that there are jobs out there that pay fairly well, especially in the eyes of a less experienced person, that would take less money and schooling to get to. Most of these students are going into trade school. There are not only high paying positions to choose from, but many of them are open for the taking, according to an article from Vice. The reason is, partial funding for trade schools is going down and there is aim for a bigger push on students
to go to college and get a ‘better’ job. There is intense scrutiny over blue collar jobs and for many kids who grew up in a family, there is a good chance their families are telling them to go to college instead. For many young people, there’s would be a sense of pride in being the first member to go and finish college. And yet many are still making the decision to skip the degree and go into trade school instead. Whether or not the Gen-Z trend will continue is yet to be seen.

etting involved on campus can be pretty intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. You might regret not joining in on the fun. Ease those nerves, and ask friends to get involved with you. To get involved, there all multiple clubs to join on campus. Clubs on campus include, Animation, Computer Science, Forensic Speech and Debate, Film Club, Pre- Law, Photography, Graphic Design, Automotive and much more. A valuable skill you’ll gain in college is writing. Unfortunately, writing English papers won’t come naturally. Joining the school newspaper can greatly help.
In addition, it gets you involved in school activities and most transfer universities look for that in a student. Writing for the newspaper includes attending certain events on and outside of campus and writing about it. Including sport events and significant ones such as Dia De Los Muertos. They range from serious to fun-filled. All that will help you get involved in campus. If you are an excellent student, consider offering your services to help others. It is also a great way to meet others and it plays an important role to changing a student’s life. It could also help you make new friends. Another helpful way to get involved in joining a sport such as a tennis, water polo,
baseball, softball, volleyball, and soccer that can help build a team bond and represent your school. Here on campus, there are more clubs expanding every year. There were not many clubs or popular events as there is now. There are much more added with fun alternatives to get involved on campus. Some of the events presented on campus include events Open Mic, educational workshops, music events, open shows in the school’s art studio, where art is presented, and even photography showcases. After all, these helpful tips will give you an idea for what to look out for. There are so many ways to get involved on campus and with friends.

Here are a few anonymous women who shared their stories: “I was once doing a movie that was filming at a Southern California Beach. I showed up for my 5:30 am call. The actress came in, and to my absolute horror, had JUST had a full face chemical peel. Her face looked like she had gone bobbing for french fries. I asked her what the hell she was thinking. She apologized profusely saying she thought it would have healed by then. She had it done two days previously. Every single foundation was literally sliding off her skin. Plus we were going to be shooting outside at the beach all day.

The Haunting Truth About Living with Roommates BETSY SEGURA Reporter

iving with roommates can be difficult or it can be easy, depending on whom you decide to room with. If you’ve been granted housing which tends to be randomly generated, then you don’t really have a choice on who your roommates are. Here we have three different experiences that someone has gone through while housing. College student, Felipe Segura IV, attends Cal State LA and houses on campus. He shares his story on various housing situations. For the first years, everything is new and different. The last thing you want to do is rock the boat. Felipe had the unfortunate incident of rooming with a student that constantly left a mess, only to blame the other students that lived in the shared apartment. Now, if you’re living in a shared space, the last thing
you want is a mess, because the mess will attract roaches. Verbal arguments amongst the roommates nearly took a physical turn when the student in question challenged Segura. Keep in mind, he was 6 feet tall at the time of the incident. However, Segura decided to handle things a proper way rather than a caveman way. He reported the student to Housing Services and this was not the first time the student was reported. At last, the troubling student was moved to another dorm. During the summer, Felipe was granted housing along with work study. He shared a spacious dorm with another student who was granted work study as well. The tables had turned on Segura when his dorm mate made outrageous claims that were utterly annoying. One by one. The claims, the bickering, and the constant mother henning frustrated him, but Felipe decided not to make a
complaint this time. Had he done so, it could have been seen as a hate crime and would have been labeled as homophobic. None of which are true. “I didn’t have a problem with his sexuality at all. It played no part in our arguments, said Segura. He
decided to do his own thing until the end of the summer in order to avoid unlikely situations. Fall semester of 2018, Segura finally received the ideal housing situation where he and his current roommate share their groceries. Pour yourself a bowl of cereal but
have no milk? No problem. Hungry? How about a granola bar or a fruit cup? In all, if you’re going to live with roommates, make sure you get along with them. If you don’t, please take the proper procedures rather than getting into verbal or physical altercations.

ho needs coffee to start the day? Some might ask, who doesn’t need coffee to start the day. Many can’t function without a steaming cup of joe and will be in a bad mood if they don’t have it. However, it’s not the coffee, but the caffeine that makes people act like this. Yet, I have not met a single tea drinker that has snapped because they haven’t had a cup of black tea. I won’t sit here and list all the reasons why coffee is so disgusting, although I’d love to. No, instead I’m going to talk about the benefits of a much better drink: Tea. The perfect cup of tea can boost anyone’s mood. Whether you need a pick me up, black tea has caffeine, or need to relax, chamomile is an amazing relaxer, there is a tea for all your needs. The health benefits of tea are as vast as the kinds of tea that exist, so let’s just go down a few of my favorites. When you’ve had a bad night and your morning isn’t looking any better your first
instinct may be to reach for your coffee maker, or let’s be real, make a Starbucks stop before going to class or work. As tempting as the bitter bite of espresso, or the diabetes inducing frap for some of you may be, try ordering or buying Ceylon black tea. This black tea is known for having rich, bold flavors and that kick of caffeine many of us need in the morning. While Ceylon is meant to be enjoyed all on its own, if you have more of a sweet tooth, then English Breakfast tea might be more for you. Bougie as it may sound, English Breakfast is another type of black tea that actually pairs well with either milk or sugar, or both if you so choose. For a real rich taste, try sweetening your tea with raw sugar. Of course, we’re not all looking for a shot of caffeine to keep us going, some of us could stand to be a bit less strung out. So, if you’re looking to relax after a long day chamomile or peppermint teas might be just what you’re looking for. Chamomile tea is a magical potion that has the ability to help treat everything from
insomnia, calms anxiety, boost your immune system, reduces inflammation and pain, and can soothe a stomach ache- just to list a few things. These miraculous daisy looking flowers can do just about anything. Just holding a cup of hot tea and inhaling is enough to start relaxing your tense body. Peppermint, much like with chamomile, also has a lot of health benefits. Like with chamomile, peppermint helps relax you by reducing your blood pressure and lowering your body temperature. Peppermint tea is also great for treating an upset stomach, promoting sleep, preventing nausea and vomiting, can fight bad breath, and even soothe menstrual cramps. With cold and flu season upon us, it is important that we not only get our flu shots, but start helping our immune system. Like with chamomile and peppermint, ginger root tea will help boost your immune system to a whole other level. Packed with vitamin C, magnesium, and many other minerals, ginger root tea is probably the best tea you can drink this winter. CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

here’s nothing like a good old war between anime sub or dubs. Who is the better successor? Anime fans have battled through this discussion, quite too many times. Both have its advantages, but can one actually be better than the other? Let’s look at the benefits of subtitles: You don’t lose context. Other than dubbed, you can easily match the original voice actor with the character’s performance. Mostly accurate translations, and accessible for those with
impaired hearing. Beneficial for bilingual viewers, and you can watch the anime in its original airing-time schedule. If the cultural aspect of anime intrigues you, subtitles may help with learning the Japanese language and cultural phrases. A helpful tip is you can pause and take notes. At last, you can impress your Senpai. Reddit user that goes by AxtheCool says, “I know that Japanese voices show much more emotion than their English counterparts. But I just prefer it better. I find it hard to convey emotions if I don’t understand what they
are saying. Like I can hear him yelling, but by reading the subtitles I don’t feel the same emotions.” Heartfelt and emotion-driven anime such as My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, and Your Lie in April, are all not the same in English and might not give us the heart clenching reaction we experience in Japanese. This comes down to the art in Japanese animation and understanding why the director chose certain actors for these characters. Not everyone will dissect a piece of work to that extent. opics about labeling have been around for some time now. Whether they should exist or not, at the end of the day society has obtained that norm to label people. There are different types of labels however, it just depends which is preferable for an individual. For example, there’s labels to identify a person’s sexual orientation; i.e. heterosexual, homosexual (gay/lesbian), and bisexual. Of course, you have to take into consideration with non-binary gender types like agender, bigender, genderfluid, genderqueer, non-binary, and off the binary. So, you’re probably thinking, “I didn’t know there was more than just three types of sexual labels…” Well according to Dr. Elizabeth Boskey who serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sexuality Education, “Gender identity is different from gender role or gender expression. Gender identity refers to how people understand themselves,” she goes onto explain, “Gender expression is how they portray themselves. Gender role is the collection of behaviors and activities that society expects to be associated with a particular gender, in this place and time.” In a nutshell, it really all comes down to the individuals themselves and how they choose to identify. Who are we to take away the rights of someone’s expression of their self? Babies are thought to be placed in the category of male or female, but it’s way more complex than that. Human biology is not always the
same for everyone, and with that being said, shouldn’t be minimalized to just two basic sexes or genders. More rather believing that it is a choice of who one chooses to be and identify. Now this does get tricky simply because some people cannot (and will not) accept others for who they are (or claim to be). There could be a situation for a person who is non-binary, more specifically “bigender” (someone who has two genders). The question of which restroom they could use could concern people, but if they’re minding their business shouldn’t you? Another case of labels that exist is ethnic labeling. A bit easier to understand than sexual/gender labeling, but it also does raise certain questions. Caucasian/Celtic, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, African-American, Asian-Pacific Islander, are just some of the majority mentioned. More so ethnic labels contain sub-labeling, for example, one can identify as Hispanic having Hispanic descendance, but also identify with the African-American descendance as well. Believe it or not people in today’s world the population is becoming more intertwined with itself (more mixed individuals). The beauty about living in the Los Angeles area is that there are rich cultural variations of people. One last case of labeling could be that of one’s personality. You’re either introverted or you’re extroverted; and yes, you guessed it they are both very opposite of one another. lcohol is no stranger to college students and whether you are the type to drink the occasional glass with a meal or you like to drink ‘till you can’t remember the night before there are ways to enjoy both. There are different types of drinking that are appropriate for different times of the day but there is a perfect time of drinking for each person out there. Day drinking is a pretty popular option for those who enjoy a classier approach to getting drunk on the weekend. A day drinking agenda usually consists of a brunch
with a bottomless mimosa option or the second less favored, paying for each one. There are a lot of different foods you can eat to handle more alcohol and cushion the blow for a potential hangover the following day. Remember bread takes up a lot of space leaving you bloated and uncomfortable. Keep the avocado toast and Instagram worthy waffles to a minimum. A plate full with potatoes and breakfast meats such as sausage and bacon is the best route to go. thoughts and feelings (opposed to extrovert).” An extrovert is, “An outgoing, gregarious person; a person concerned primarily with the physical and social environment (opposed to introvert).” For quite some time now this is how people labeled themselves when it came to social settings, but who’s to say that a person cannot feel like both? Leave it to good ol’ urbandictionary. com to generate a definition for such a person, called an “omnivert,” which defines as, “Someone who is introvert and extrovert.” The definition goes onto
describing the personality traits of an omnivert; stating, “Can be extremely introverted when presented with situations they don’t want to be in or don’t care about, but on the other hand be the life of the party when they are enjoying themselves and want to be there. Both very quiet, reserved person and loud, outgoing.” In all, labeling has become a part of the life we all live. Even if one doesn’t believe they belong to any labels whatsoever, believing just that is labeling in itself! Put that in your pipe and smoke it. At the end of the
day everyone anywhere has the right to proceed how they seem fit to go about labeling their self. With that in mind, everyone should be respectful towards others feelings and their personal choice to who they are at the end of the day. Ginger root is the swiss army knife of herbal teas, in my humble opinion. Feeling under the weather? Drink ginger root tea. Upset stomach? Ginger root. Chest congestion? Ginger root. Poor circulation? Ginger root. Had a fight with your significant other and need to vent? Put on the kettle and steep some ginger root. I’ll admit, ginger root is probably not the best tasting item on this list. However, paired with peppermint and sweetened with honey, you get all the benefits of both the teas, and the honey, with none of the bad taste. Even though I just said that ginger root is the best tea on here, my all time favorite has to be lemongrass. Lemongrass, like the other teas I mentioned, is a multipurpose tea. Full of antioxidants, vitamin A and C, and tastes amazing. Lemongrass tea has antibacterial and antifungal properties that are great for combating all sorts of ailments.
Much of what the herbal teas do overlap, they’re all great for soothing stomach problems, reducing pain, relaxing your mind and body. Yet even with all that, lemongrass is still my favorite. It does what the others do, but taste amazing any time. You can make it into an iced tea with lemonade and relax on hot days or drink it piping hot and snuggle under the blankets. Either way, lemongrass tea will help regulate high blood pressure, boost your metabolism, help heal colds and flus, and clear up your skin. In fact, you can make chamomile, peppermint, ginger root, and lemongrass teas and have a night of selfcare. Whether you use tea bags or use loose leaves, just steep in boiling hot water and sweeten with honey to get the most out of their properties. These five herbal teas can help relax you and get you to the best version of yourself while raising your immune system.

It’s That Time Again continued... high in protein will slow your body’s processing of alcohol. Accompanying day drinking is the mid afternoon, early evening drinking that usually occurs at a trendy dive bar. There are a lot of different drink options available for someone later on in the day. The healthiest drinks you can order at a dive bar, according to an article published by the Medical Daily, are neat and straight liquors on the rocks. These drinks, though not a fan favorite in flavor, are the healthiest option is sipped gingerly meaning vodka, gin, scotch, and whiskey are all fair game. Play it smart with these drinks because they have a bad reputation of sneaking up. Load up on whatever bar finger-food is offered like peanuts or pretzels. Peanuts are the best option and try eating as many as possible because they’re rich in vitamin B which helps preventing a hangover.
The final form of drinking that is the most popular amongst young adults from the age of 18-24 is the classic late night binge drinking, the reasons as to why this age group is affected more than any others is because a mass majority are currently enrolled in college. An article published by Healthier, “The Real Reasons Why Drinking Culture is So Prominent in College,” revealed that the five main driving reasons for colleges students to drink are stress relief, making social situations easier, peer pressure to fit in, to have fun, and mostly to distract. This is the most common at house parties, frat parties, tailgates, and nearly any other situation where college students congregate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention broke it down into simple numbers to get an idea of how easy it is to slip into a binge drink mode.
For women, the average number is about four drinks per occasion and for men the number is five. Many factors influence the body’s ability to process alcohol such as sex, body fat, weight and even hormone levels according to the study “Absorption Rate Factors.” The study continued with saying that, “Women have less dehydrogenase, the enzyme that breaks down alcohol in the stomach, which contributes to higher BACs, Blood Alcohol Concentrations, than men drinking the same amount of alcohol.” Each night could be different for a person in terms of the effects of the alcohol, but the most important thing to remember after a night of binge drinking, if you can remember, is what fatty foods will you eat when you finally get home and how much water or sports drinks you will have to consume before your head hits your pillow.

You may just be in it for the action and incredible Shonen fight scenes, and watching in sub won’t be necessary if that’s the case. Notably, dub fans have to wait weeks, months, or until the show is over to watch it in a dubbed version. There’s the choice of watching with subtitles or patiently wait for it to air on Funimation or Toonami, two known sources for dubbed anime. Reddit user, Calitroit, states, “I prefer dub. The reason why is because when I try to multitask, I would miss something watching subs, plus some subs move too fast.” The Reddit participant does make a valid point that
can be relatable to someone with a busy schedule, such as a student. Although most viewers prefer Dub, because it’s easier to process, it can be a hit or miss. Voice actors can make or break the show depending if the voice suits the character. In the end, you have the best of both worlds. Both versions can be appreciated and if you don’t like the way Goku screams in Japanese, switch over to subtitles. Instead, embrace the sound of Sean Schemmel’s (English voice actor for Goku) excessive screams.

Friday, Oct. 19, the Rio Hondo women’s soccer team defeated the Long Beach City Vikings 3-0 at the Rio soccer field. Playing in their cancer initiative game, the Roadrunners sported their pink uniforms to a win and also spread cancer awareness while doing it. With temperatures upwards of 90 degrees at start time, and even hotter on the turf, the Rio Hondo wom-
en’s soccer team looked to win their ninth game overall when they took on the Long Beach Vikings Friday afternoon. Coming into the match, head coach Jennifer Tanaka and the Lady Roadrunners were 3-1 in the South Coast Conference and 8-1-3 overall. Long Beach, playing in their all white uniforms, came into this game at 3-1 in their own conference as well. The two teams were very physical with one another. The game started out slow with no action but Rio dominated the time of possession
throughout the entirety of the game. It was seemingly noticeable that the Roadrunners were a better team, but it took them some time to show it. Dominating the ball, they had a good amount of chances at the net. Significantly more chances than the Vikings but neither team was able to score leaving it all square with no score at halftime. Despite the hot temperatures at kickoff, and the somewhat slow start, the Roadrunners were able to finally break through in the
second half. After some coaching at the break from Tanaka, the Lady Roadrunners were able to use that advice and time to rest, to come out strong in the second half. Physicality showed itself again right after halftime when freshman forward Serina Vargas, who had a great game, took a hard fall after a collision just past midfield on Long Beach’s end. She showed great toughness and grit as she and the Roadrunners were finally able to break through with their first goal shortly there after. Freshman forward Nicole
Chavez scored the first of their three goals. With that goal, it gave the Roadrunners some life they lacked in the first half and deflated the sails of the Vikings. It was a spark that they needed because they turned around and scored their second goal within five minutes of Chavez’s. The second goal was a connection from freshman defender Karina Banda to freshman forward Zharria Ramirez. Coach Tanaka was really pleased with her team overall but wished they had started off a little better. “Starting stronger from the beginning can help set the tone and this is something we need to do better,” Tanaka said post game. They were able to get past the slow start and with freshman forward Lismed Salcido’s fourth goal of the season and the third goal of the game for the Roadrunners, that would be all that they would need as they cruised to an easy but heat-filled 3-0 win. The relentless attack, stamina, and an exceptional game in net for sophomore goalkeeper Izellia Delgadillo, meant the Lady Roadrunners were able to pull out their ninth shutout of the season and third win on the bounce after losing two weeks ago. Come out and support the ladies as they take on the Compton College Tartars at home, Tuesday, Oct. 23rd at 4 p.m.

The Rio Hondo men’s soccer team lost its first home game of the season 3-1 against the Long Beach City College Vikings Friday, Oct. 19. A misleading result that doesn’t tell the whole story of the game had a controversial penalty against the Roadrunners in the first half which changed the whole momentum of a game that had been controlled by Rio Hondo until that decision. Right from the first whistle, the Roadrunners began the first half with high intensity and quickly became the owners of the ball with long periods of possession, mostly in the opponent’s half. Rio Hondo could have gone up on the scoreboard early in the eighth minute when two consecutive attempts on goal by defenders Brian Martinez, freshman, and Roman Delgado, sophomore, hit the crossbar on both occasions. Just four minutes later, Ricky Sotelo’s
attempt on goal was cleared out of the goal line by a Vikings defender. A goal from the penalty spot in the 12th minute by Long Beach midfielder Ruben Menjivar following a controversial call against the Roadrunners, changed the momentum of the game completely. The unexpected goal was a hard hit on the Roadrunners who, until then, were controlling the game entirely. The goal caused Rio Hondo to fall emotionally, changing the momentum of the game in the Viking’s favor, who took advantage of it and scored a second goal in the 42nd minute right before halftime. It was a wonderful individual goal by no. 7 Steven Espinoza who found himself inside the box on a 50-50 challenge but managed to chip the ball over the goalie with the outside of his foot. The second half was no different from the first, Rio Hondo remained with the control of the game and continued to look for the goal that would put them back into the game.
The Roadrunners kept getting denied by amazing saves from Long Beach goalkeeper Mario DeLaTorre. It wasn’t until the 87th minute when Rio Hondo finally found the back of the net when Havier Zaragoza found a rebound inside the box and placed in the bottom left corner, giving Rio Hondo hope for a comeback. Unfortunately, two minutes after Rio Hondo’s goal, a miscommunication between a Rio defender and the goalkeeper left Long Beach forward Carlos Maldonado with the ball and an open net only to tap the ball in the net and put the game to rest. This was Rio Hondo’s first home defeat in a game that was more complicated than it should have been. Coach Brenes wasn’t really upset after the game and mentioned that the penalty against them changed the game completely and luck just wasn’t on their side that game. “I didn’t really think they were better than us today, the penalty early on changed the game completely, the goal
gave them confidence and we kind of lost ours,” said Brenes, “They capitalized on their few clear chances and we didn’t, we lost because of our own mistakes, it is something that we have to continue working on if we want to make it to the playoffs.” The Roadrunners need to continue working to get a positive result in the next game which is Tuesday, Oct. 23 when they receive the Compton College Tartars with the intention to get back on track.
Games Remaining The Roadrunners have a total of six games remaining with four of them being South Coast Conference matches. At 2-1-1 in the SCC, the squad sits second place which is enough for a spot in the postseason. But, at 2-2 and in third, Chaffey College, whom the Roadrunners defeated 3-2 two weeks ago, look to spoil the Roadrunners chances and repay them for the loss when Rio visits Chaffey Nov. 9.

The Major League Soccer regular season comes to an end Sunday as MLS Decision Day kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Eleven matches will be played simultaneously with Real Salt Lake being the only side that’s played its 34 matches. The Utah club (49 pts) will have its eyes on the Los Angeles Galaxy’s game against the Houston Dynamo as the former looks to inch past RSL for the Western Conference’s final playoff spot. With a win, the Galaxy (48 pts) snatch the final slot. In the Eastern Conference, it’s the Montreal Impact looking to jump above the Columbus Crew. The Crew face-off against Minnesota United while Montreal play New England Revolution.

The Los Angeles Rams remained undefeated after Week 7 of the National Football League Sunday, Oct. 21st. The Rams defeated the San Francisco 49ers 39-10 at Levi Stadium as head coach Sean McVay steered his team to yet another comfortable win. This is the first time since 1985 that the Rams have started a season 7-0. With the record, the Rams are first in the NFL’s NFC West division and sit top of the league. The Rams were off to a great start the first half of the game against the 49ers as Los Angeles linebacker Corey Littleton was able to make his 2nd punt block this season. offense could not. Safety John Johnson and cornerback Troy Hill had interceptions during Sunday’s game against the 49ers. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald wreaked havoc by consistently applying pressure and getting to San Francisco’s quarterback a total of 4 times, a career high for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. The Rams’ only blimp in the game came in the second quarter when 49ers tight end George Kittle was able to catch and carry the ball into the endzone for a 9-yard touchdown. Other than that, just another day at the office for McVay and his herd. Ultimately, defense led the Rams to victory against the 49ers as they took advantage of the hosts inability to secure the ball.
First Win In 16 Games Lifts Spirts For Rio Volleyball MIC HAEL KHURAIBET Reporter

The Rio Hondo women’s volleyball team is fighting back against its most recent losses, taking home a win against the Cerritos College Falcons on Friday night, Oct. 19. The final score was 3-2. The victory was an exciting turnaround from the previous two games, where they lost 3-0 both times. Friday’s game also marked the first win at Rio Hondo the Lady Roadrunners have had all season. Head coach Teddi Esko credited the win to a change in mindset by the team. “I focused with the girls on believing in our mentality and that the game is in us,” said Esko, “We have to just bring it. We have to keep believing [that] every day, a new opportunity presents itself and we have to dig in and go for it.” The team’s new attitude could be felt on the court. Compared to previous games, the team performed with much more energy. Esko said she saw the team play more confidently and aggressively than in past games. Esko instructed the offense to “hammer the ball,” which they did. Outside hitter Nicole Vasquez served up 6 aces, while middle blocker Danielle Betancourt had 13 kills. Teammates also encour-

aged each other from the sidelines by cheering audibly during plays. Support from the team even drowned out the crowd at times. By comparison, the Falcons remained pretty quiet throughout the match, even during the games they won. “We’ve been talking a lot about self-talk,” said Esko, “Stay positive, stay positive. Whatever happened, focus on the next thing.” The Lady Roadrunners face off against El Camino (tomorrow) and LA TradeTech (Friday, Oct. 26) this week, which are in a different division within the conference. Esko said the team’s plan is to refine their approach based on what they’ve learned this season. “We’ve got enough matches under our belt where we know where we play well and where we don’t,” said Esko, “We’re going to keep working hard with more repetition. More touches on the ball to build our game, because that’s what it’s all about.” The team celebrated their win Friday night, and plans to apply the same energy into future matches. One thing that Friday’s game made clear is that the season is not over. The end of the regular season is less than a month away, but the Lady Roadrunners may hit their stride at just the right time.
