The Ramones, many consider the fathers of punk rock and one of the most influential bands of all time. They were the turning point for the punk movement, the ones who set the bar for the rest of the bands to follow. They ruled the scene from the ‘70s to the late 90’s, influencing more bands than anyone would have thought for example Pearl Jam, The Strokes, The Misfits, The White Stripes and Black Flag to name a few. With their three minute face punch songs, buzz-saw riffs and catchy choruses they started something that would never end, however many thought the guitar was too overpowering and the songs too short but eventually they came to love the iconic raw powerful sound they are remembered for today. The Ramones started back in 1974 in the New York City neighborhood of Forest Hills, Queens with the original member’s being Joey (Jeffrey Hyman), Johnny (John Cummings), Deedee (Douglas Colvin) and Tommy (Thomas Erdelyi). Tommy and Johnny had already been in a band from ‘65 to ‘67 called The Tangerine Puppets. Around that time they made friends with Joey the singer from the band Sniper and Deedee who moved there from Germany. Wearing the most basic things, being the most average guys with their “uniforms” of leather jackets, jeans and chucks. One could say they even started a fashion statement, anyone wearing that three piece iconic outfit can pay homage to the Ramones. With 14 plus albums one would think they were fond of each other but they all hated each other in the beginning, and I would like to say they eventually came to like one another but they never did. There was always some drama in the band but they held it together throughout all their years, down to their last show. The Ramones had two exhib-

its one in the Queens Museum running from April 10th to July 31st 2016. And an exhibit here in Los Angeles at the Grammy Museum running from September 16th to February 28th 2017. Titled Hey! Ho! Let’s Go Ramones and the Birth of Punk was an exhibit that showcased more than 50 public and private collections across the world. The Queens Museum showcased more of the Ramones starting, their roots and all that came with it. The Grammy Museum showcased more of the influences they had on music history and pop culture. I had the chance to go to the exhibit at the Grammy Museum, hundreds of Ramones lovers gazing at the walls covered in an array of Ramones memorabilia. Right when you walk in there’s a giant wall with a photo of the Ramones during one of their concerts and in front of that there’s Markys drum set placed perfectly for all to

gaze at. Leather jackets worn by the members encased behind glass walls, along with Johnny’s guitar and Joeys glove and microphone he used at every concert they ever had. Many of these items borrowed from people’s public and private collections. Johnnys wife Linda Ramone let the museum use many of Johnny’s thing such as his leather jacket and guitars. There was an area where you could put on headphones and listen to a wide variety of uncut Ramones songs and even some demos. On the right side of the exhibit they had a whole wall covered in all of the Ramones albums ever produced, including the poster for their movie Rock ‘n’ Roll Highschool. To the far right of that they had blown up all four of the member’s visa applications into Japan in the 80’s. On the opposite side of the wall to the far right they had a little room where you could see
videos of their concerts and sing along as it had the lyrics posted on the screen. The infamous Pinhead dress and mask was propped up along posters of many of their concerts. A little store in the corner was available to buy anything and everything Ramones related, from T-shirts and mugs to records and pins. The whole exhibit was only on one floor, smaller than I had hoped but it was packed with so many things that had so much meaning to me even though I’ve never met any of the Ramones themselves considering I was 4 when the majority of the members passed away. But that’s what musicians do, they make you feel as though you’ve met each and every one and had conversations for hours. It all came to an end when Joey Ramone passed away after a long battle with cancer in 2001. Bassist Dee Dee
Ramone died in 2002 of a drug overd and later, cancer took guitarist Johnn mone. The last original member, dru Tommy Ramone, died in 2014, also f cancer. The Ramones have had such an pact on the music scene it was great them finally get an exhibit that show everything they’ve worked hard for. F members just playing because they w to, wearing the minimum, nothing fa or expensive just jeans, leather jacket chucks. Known for their raw, fast, hig energy guitar playing and jack- hamm drumming that would pave the way future bands all around the world. W these four simple words: Hey! Ho! Le Go! their legacy will live on.

ey listen! Video game’s music and sound is something that most of people could correlate to in the current era of technology. The purpose of the music is to make the perfect companion to the content of the game and that is it. Those perfect musical compositions make a lot of people remember the famous 8-bit songs played in the Nintendo Entertainment System or the SEGA in which they would play Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Tetris or Pacman back in the 80’s. But most importantly these notes can make someone remember their childhood and that is something special, that only the nostalgia of those notes can provide just as any other song of your favorite artist would do but with a degree of personalization. Music grows within our hearts and we make it part of our lives on a day to day basis. We use music as a media of entertainment, distraction, concentration and sentimental attachment. Many titles from the video game industry are recognized for their musical arrangements, but no franchise has made such an important impact on fans as The Legend of Zelda has.

The Legend of Zelda is one of the greatest video game series ever, and a big part of that recognition is the music that we find in the series. The story of the game is that of a young hero by the name of Link who is destined to save Princess Zelda, a reincarnation of Goddess Hylia from time and time again, and from those stories comes the music Zelda fans love. The music from TLOZ has established it’s very own fan base in ways that many couldn’t imagine, by itself it has

become an icon of the series and it’s very unique in it’s nature, breaking the boundaries of just being a video game’s music to being just music on it’s own. There are many artists who have used some of the musical notes from Zelda in their own music, such as Steve Aoki, DeadMou5 and Zedd are a few of the many artists that have used some of the Goddess’s musical notes. TLOZ music is also an inspiration to many new artists, such as the Mariachi Entertainment System (MES) a group of young talented musicians who decided to form a Mariachi Band and make musical covers of video games due to the large population of gamers and music enthusiast that enjoy the music. The Legend of Zelda even has it’s very own Symphony due to the popularity of it’s music
TLOZ, and its has kept a strong momentum since thanks to the acceptance of the fans. The classical like music that the Zelda symphony provides can stimulate your brain into a state of concentration with the very own musical notes of the goddess. So if you are an intellectual that enjoys of classical music and video games this is the perfect route to go. If you are more of an adventurous personality such as our hero Link, the musical arrangements made by artists such as Steve Aoki, DeadMou5 or Zedd can be a perfect fit for you. With the musical mixes that implement TLOZ or any of your favorite video game sounds there is no better way to start your parties and get the people going. The Lost Woods mix by Ephixa is also a great dubstep song that demonstrates the greatness that can be achieved by featuring the famously known “HEY LISTEN’ sound from TLOZ.

Surely The Legend of Zelda music has opened new doors by having it’s own symphony to other video games franchises to continue on the same path and make of video game music a genre of it’s own. For that we keep thanking the creators of these magnificent ways of entertainment, such as Shigeru Miyamoto creator of Zelda, Koji Kondo composer of video game music and the many artist that keep our hearts beating to the rhythm of the famously known 8-bit songs by making covers, mixes and playing the melodies of our favorite video games.

that fans love since 1886 when composer Koji Kondo delivered a masterpiece that was the main theme for The Legend of Zelda, the first installment in the series. Taylor Davis is a famous violinist who released an album by the name of “Melodies of Hyrule” back in 2013. The album contains 14 musical tracks that are covers of TLOZ; musical arrangements such as these are of great for college students that likes to study listening to music, since the ambiance it outs you in is of relaxation and concentration. If you are tired of listening to Mozart or Beethoven compositions, these are a great alternatives for anyone that appreciates acoustic music. If you are not satisfied enough then The Legend of Zelda Symphony of the Goddesses will be your best bet. The orchestra conducted by Amy Andersson was formed in 2011 on the 25th anniversary of the

For being in such a male dominated music industry, women are foremost set off as just a sexy symbol, placed in the back corner and or to promote a label. Lucky enough, Bay Area’s well known resident dropped her second debut album, “Sweet Sexy Savage late January 27, 2017 - a well deserved R&B project.
TLC, Aaliyah, and Rihanna influences are a somewhat similar vibe of what happens when one steps out of line. But what is different in Kehlani case is the pure tone, mixture of compositions and retro 90s R&B style. 2014 Cloud19 was a taste for her in music and rapidly listeners embraced her unusual vibe and went more hype on her mixtape released in 2015 You Should Be Here. YSBH became such a hit due to the realness of how Kehlani told a story belonging dear to herself - her life. A unique blend of five ethnicities, Parrish grew up in the bay area with an aunt that would play all the powerful women and love songs that just motivated Kehlani to sing. Been making music in a young girl group, two mixtapes projects and some time set aside for herself, the 21 -year-old hit us with another successful mixtape and debut album, “Sweet Sexy Savage”. The album alone sets off her acceptance of flaws,self love, strengths and still moving forward from depression and fame. Portraying a woman’s journey on being understood and accepted for all that she is. Just what the title reads, you receive the sweet and sexy - as usual - but why not all three. Kehlani took a spin and put all three traits on one album and gave us a piece of her mind. Singles like “Advice” represents a toxic relationship once involved in and another single admitting to almost losing it. Singing with confidence and vibrancy her sound is so crisp, catchy lyrics and such a badass look. From previous mixtapes in the past Kehlani has transitioned from a dependent broken girl to a self confident strong young woman. As of now, Kehlani is set for tour all around the world to share her woman empowering and self love project. Suggestions of becoming apart of the tsunami mob - a name for Kehlani’s fanbase - would start with her first mixtape and then the next one. The 21 year old’s very supportive mob, loved the SSS album so much they got it’s logo tattooed on them. So far Kehlani has had a successful start in the industry that this is just the beginning of it all. As a R&B artist, Kehlani has a focus on bringing back the traditional vibe. From starting off in a girl band, to going solo, to almost attempting suicide, Kehlani still stands tall and keeps on her grind in producing music and being there for her tsunami mob. Don’t let this good soul slip away from us, take wave with the mob and vibe.

Music has the power to bring us all together with all types of emotions; bringing us back into time and inspiring us to dance in the moment. Right there, in that nic-of-time, that is where the beauty of music begins. Thursday June 23 I experienced the beauty – with a tad fear for my life. Santa Monica Pier an iconic location famously known for it’s mini amusement park “Pacific Park”, an aquarium and carousel returns the all time favorite tradition, Twilight Concerts. Twilight Concerts is a free event for all ages from 7 pm to 10 pm to come onto the pier and enjoy a night full of free snacks, games, and gifts while also enjoying upcoming amateur artist. 19 year-old upcoming artist Khalid (pronounced ‘KUH-LeeD’) Robinson shut down the Pacific Coast Highway with a total of 60,000 attendees to start off the first week of concerts. Fun Fact: Staple Center carries a capacity of 21,000 individuals; with such a jump-
start to Robinson’s career the night event ended with police assistance. Khalid Robinsons is an American teenager / singer straight out of El Paso, Texas who spent most of his childhood moving around due to his mother Linda Wolfe military career. Massive success on first single Location and due to celebrity Kylie Jenner promoting it on her Snapchat. Crazy how one American Teen grew to popularity so quickly and brought so many people together to enjoy a night full of feeling free. Asked to attend a free concert with a friend was just the start of my summer. Without a hesitation we were on our way down the 605 to the 10 Santa Monica Freeway in minutes. Leaving around rush hour, traffic on the 10 was five times worse than usual because of the overcrowded streets leading to the pier. To me at first the amount of people was not a shocker since I mistaken Khalid for Dj Khaled – a well known Dj who collab with many other high ranking artists. But as people play-

ing Khalid music out loud with stereos I asked my friend who this guy was. Getting up to date with who he was and what I was getting myself into, stampedes of people started riots and chargings toward security. Sounds of animal running was how the surrounding I was put into. Body heat, pushing and shoving was on going for a good two hours since gates opened up around 6:45 pm. Right at 7 security ended up opening more entrances and ended up closing some entrances for over populated pier venue. The closings did not stop fans of Khalid and Twilight Concerts, so on the left side off the pier people ended up overpopulating the beach. From almost forming a huge headache and almost receiving a heat stroke, I ended up pushing my friends and I though the stampede and into the venue. On the pier was the stage and sponsors tents giving out goodies. Snapchat was one huge sponsor that put on Thursday’s event.
From the short amount of time in hearing out the type of music Khalid produces, the 19 -year-old’s record isn’t about youthful social commentary as it is a record about post-millennial youths. Only straightforward lyrics on teenage aspirations and love from texts and tweets. There is always a first for everything whether it’s graduating high school, first love, first time behind the wheel or even first taste of freedom; in the end no matter what age or experience one may have, Khalid’s music can be a relatable source to oneself. 8:30 pm the great Khalid started his set with his single “Let’s Go” a song of celebration in leaving his worries behind him and moving full speed ahead. “Pick up your worries and throw them out the window” a lyric sung by Khalid. In high respect, just the voice, the rhythm and beats that came all out of Khalids performance put me in a place of comfort, worry free, and night to be at. A total of 10 songs were sang and each one was better than the last; new

to the music was no problem since the american R&B Soul singer kept his audience amused. Grateful Khalid Robinsons was such in awe to the massive crowd and extension on beach, he interacted with his audience at every section of the stage to give his fans an acknowledgement as a thank-you. Closing the night off with another single around 10 pm,I ended up leaving since getting out of the parking lot and onto the freeway would be hectic. Boy was I right, just walking off the pier there were tons of people with the same idea. With high expectations, Robinson leaves his album to the world with a it’s okay to be happy and to be sad, we all have emotions let tend to open up on them. With a tour on its way new music, friends, and experiences is all what Khalid is excited to for. An amazing talent at a young age sure has a big future ahead for himself.

SUCCESS THAT RESONATES It is no secret that once someone makes it big in the industry they expand their image and their brand. Some create businesses, others join businesses, and some do both. For Marshall Mathers III, also known as Eminem or Slim Shady, it was both. Eminem is best known for being a rapper and record producer. In 1998, Eminem was signed to Aftermath Entertainment, a label run by fellow rapper and producer Dr Dre. Although Eminem had made a name for himself at that point, the contract signed with Aftermath was a big step in his career. After Eminem signed with Aftermath there was no looking back for him, his career blew up and he became internationally known. Throughout the years it has been known to the public of Eminem’s struggles through his music, and through the media, and in recent years he went to rehab to fight his struggle. When Eminem returned with his 2009 album Relapse, the whole game changed for Eminem began his own record label Shady Records in 1999 and once he began releasing music under the label, it began to grow and he began to

sign new artists and artists who had already made a name for themselves, left and right. Shady Records was Eminem’s first major business venture, he was also, and continues to be, involved in a lot of philanthropic work. In 2011 Shade 45 began its operations as a satellite radio station. Shade 45 is a station created by Eminem on Sirius XM radio. The station is highly regarded by musicians and claims another success for Eminem. In 2014 Eminem toured alongside Rihanna, the tour grossed an alleged $36 with only six shows in three cities. The power of both musicians was very clear and the work ethic of both shinned very bright. Along with his music, Eminem is also an
actor, his most known role is as Jimmy Smith Jr., or ‘Rabbit’ in 8 Mile, a movie portraying the life of a struggling rapper, much like Eminem himself. Eminem also has his own foundations, The Marshal Mathers Foundation, which is where he does a part of his philanthropic work. Over time Eminem has partnered with many clothing and accessory designers to release and sell limited edition items and donate the proceedings to foundations helping people and groups in need. In 2013 Eminem partnered CASIO, which makes G-SHOCK watches. A limited amount of the watches were made and sold to the public. In 2015, Eminem partnered with Jordan Brand
and Carhartt to create the Air Jordan IV x Shady x Carhartt shoe, marking Eminem’s third collaboration with Jordan. Only 10 pairs of this shoe were made and they were all auctioned off. The proceeds from the auction went to the Marshall Mathers Foundation (Eminem.com). Eminem also has his own line of t-shirts and sweatshirts on his website, along with keychains, stickers, flasks, and other accessories. With all of his musical success, it is no surprise that Eminem has ventured out as much as he has. His music resonates a message to kids around the world that no matter who you are, or where you come from, success is an option.

rock is The rock genre was on the decline for a little while, with no one listening to it and turning to different types of artist and genres. It seemed like it was going to keep the route it was with not a lot of people listening to rock as much as they use to. It lost its fame because of many famous artist like “Drake”, “Kanye”, and many others. Rock was finally dethroned after its, fame all throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s. Sure there there’s tons of rock bands producing great music but it wasn’t enough to compete with, the other mainstream artist. Rock took a major down fall once the “Eminem” era began, more and more people started to stir away from rock and turn to a different kind of music all together. This was some things that would be stir the course of what most people would listen too. He single handedly revamped the Rap genre. Causing tons of rappers to come out and get there shoot in the limelight. Such as “Lil Wayne” with his album “Tha Carter lll” or even the birth of “Kanye West” and his debuting album “College Dropout”. The Rap scene was booming with people left and right making amazing music. Fast forward to the early 2010’s Rappers left and right were the new kings of music. One of the biggest hits coming out was Eminem with his album “Recovery” in 2010 he had won many people back and even turning on new people to rap all together. “Drake” had released “Thank Me Later” making him boom like never before, people were coming out of the wood works to listen to him and follow his career. Another big hit for the rap scene was when two giants “Jay Z” and “Kanye West” made a collaboration named “Watch The Throne” which was considered by many an instant classic and even still stands today, as one of the greatest albums made. Once again winning the hearts of many. The rock scene wasn’t doing all that well either. One of the giant bands that everyone would listen to was “Linkin Park” making monster albums one after another it seemed that they could do no wrong. But boy were we all wrong, they made a bust of an album by the name of “Hybrid Theory” that was hated by a lot of people. Hardcore fans even turned their backs on them after that with this happening Rock took a major hit that would be

Lot’s of people found it hard to believe that Weezer could make such a horrible albu right after the “Blue Album” the one that put them on the charts. Two major giants had just fallen and it w for a new brand to take the crown.
But even though rap was donating Rock was still there was. It was nowhere as big as it was about ten years but there were major bands causing Rock to have a little rebirth. “Muse” was taking the industry by storm the “Resistance” album that was better and better every time you’d listen to it. They showed people that roc could be great like how it was in it’s golden years. Another great hit was “The Black Keys” with the “Brothe album. It brought back that old timey blues feel back in the modern era. These are just a few bands who we slowly winning back the fame that rock use to hold back then.
But it took one thing to change everything for the world of Rock and Roll. It was one band that single hand ly saved rock and help make it a giant like it use to be. It was a little band by the name of “Blink 182” with album “California” that came out July 1st 2016. An album that was loved by music lovers everywhere. Wha had done was unheard of the making of a comeback album after years of being domante. There single “Bo Death” throwing “Drake” off the top of the music charts. Which something that hasn’t happened in years, been a while since a rock song was number one on the music charts.
Arguably they inspired bands like “Green Day” making “revolution radio”, and “AFI” making “The Blood” Many other rock bands once again making wonderful music that would go toe-to-toe with the rap genre. I resurgence for rock everywhere people were turning a new light on rock all together showing it on just abo ery platform you could think of. Even now rock shows are selling out all around with “Muse”, “Blink 182”, Day” and many others are all going on international tours which is something that was hard for rock band back then. But now with it’s new found fame it doesn’t seem like it’s going to die out anytime soon.

J Khaled is one of the hottest DJs in HipHop. He has dominated the charts with his albums, and has gotten some of the most talented artists to collaborate. Khaled has been successful in all his ventures, but his latest move is one for the books. Khaled has named his son, the executive producer to his latest album, “Grateful”. Asahd Khaled is now the youngest producer in music, making history at only 10 months old. In a recent inter view with Jimmy Kimmel, Khaled told viewers Asahd was a major key in the making of the album. According to Khaled, when Asahd bobs his head and smiles really big that means the song is a hit, and when he bobs his head seriously that means the song has some substance to it, “but still a hit.” Khaled also says that even when Asahd isn’t present in the studio, he still calls in on FaceTime to get the babies input on the music. Khaled is not the first artist to credit his child on their music. Other artists such as Jay Z, Nas, & Beyonce have credited their children as writers on albums, but never have they been executive producers. DJ Khaled has definitely outdone himself this time, once again proving he is the best at what he does. Since the release of “Grateful” it has sold over 500,000 copies and has been frequently downloaded. Huge numbers in album sales means huge money for Asahd once he’s old enough to spend it. DJ Khaled is setting his son up for a prosperous future, promising he won’t work a day in his life.

Editorial’s Note
Five weeks of strict deadlines, nearly not as much experience with Indesign or Photoshop, and the usual “Nicole Bad Luck Charm”. Hhmmm, seems like some S#!*% I would get myself into. From nearly pulling the last strand of hair left on my head to yes a mini meltdown of tears, my team and I have pulled through a heavy load of Tough Love this summer. I honestly don’t know how we pulled it off but the adrenaline it gave - me personally - us young journalist was a feel of the real of a working magazine room. I am extremely proud of all the hardwork and dedication my team and I have put into this Music Magazine. I will like to thank my team for keeping up with their part and making a great piece of work. But what I am more proud is that it has come to an end. Without a special person of mine, who I proba bly drive nuts and about to change their phone number I would probably had let my team down. During the last minute stuff to put this magazine together, the quote “The Struggle is Real!” defined my moment of tears. This person has had my back since 2011 and still here dealing with the crap I encounter myself in. She has seen me at my best, my crazy fun side, and even at my worst. Had and has always an open mind and ear to the many struggles I may approach and even though I may disagree with her, I know she just looking out for the best. This person has so much going for her that it will be hard to say goodbye 200 miles away because who am I going to car karoke with at night or make me run up steep hills when I can barely breathe. But no matter the distance or what time, or day we will always be there. She will do amazing things whereever she lands and I just can’t wait to be her Regina George’s Mom rooting for her on the sideline. She tells me how much I have impacted her life, but I hope she knows how much she impacted mine. From a quiet stranger in tennis, to being out the inner Karquisha dying to blossom to traveling and nearly seeing the light, I really got scored a true homie. In the past seven years I gained a sister. Sad to say, but this person has been more of a sibling to me than of my very own. From day one, my person has shown me non-stop support, love, and myself. So heres to you, Karmin, on your special day. Happy 21st Birthday Vato! Love you and heres to many more Bachelor nights, car rides, dancing, and stalking our non existent men. Thanks for letting be the weird crazy friend.
