Kellyanne Conway’s Comments Radiates Backlash CRYSTIAN MENDOZA Sports Editor

Recently, President Trump’s senior adviser, Kellyanne Conway, made comments based off of Trump’s previous claims suggesting that former president Barack Obama had wire tapped his telephone with a number of different devices. Conway was quick to clarify that she did not intend to accuse the former president of spying on the Trump administration via kitchen appliances, including a microwave, arguing that her comments were taken out of context by the media. Conway’s comments were contradicting, she stated to CNN this past Monday, “I don’t believe people are using the microwave to spy on the Trump campaign.” Yet in an interview with The Record of Bergen County, N.J., she said that former president Obama’s spying efforts may very well be far more extensive than a basic wire tap. Conway’s comments appear to contradict themselves, telling the paper, “what I can say is there are many ways to surveil each other. You can surveil someone through their phones, certainly through their television sets-any number of ways.” Conway’s comments added fuel to the fire after Trump took to twitter this past Mar. 4 and posted a series of tweets that began with: “is it legal for a sitting president to be ‘wire tapping’ a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW!” The tweets didn’t stop there either, he followed by saying “I’d bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama

was tapping my phones in October just prior to Election!” Trump had reason to believe the Obama administration was wiretapping his telephone, but took to Twitter for his claims without any real evidence. Trump nor anyone at the White House currently posses any type of evidence in favor of Trump’s claims, and are actually requesting Congress to investigate the issue as it correlates to Russia’s interference in the presidential election. Trump’s last tweet regarding the subject read, “how low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nix-
on/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!” Nonetheless, Conway told CNN she was not referring to Trump’s claims when referring to the microwave surveillance and simply responded with “I’m not in the job of having evidence, that’s what investigations are for” commenting on the fact that she ultimately had no actual proof that surveillance was taking place on behalf of the Obama administration. Conway’s comments, according to her, were not directed at former President Obama. Instead, they were referring to the recent WikiLeaks publication of documents titled Vault 7 which originated within the CIA and

exposed their hacking capabilities. WikiLeaks published its first full part of a series this past Mar. 7 and it is made up of 8,761 documents which have been titled “Year Zero” and disclose the CIA has the ability the collect data and
other information from Apple iPhones, Google Androids, Windows, and even Samsung Smart TV’s. When asked if she knows if Trump Tower was actually wiretapped, Conway failed to answer.

US Attorney Preet Bharara Fired After Refusing Jeff Sessions Order to Resign DAINELLE ANZURES Reporter danielle.anzures847@my.rio.hondo.edu
One of the most prominent U.S. prosecutors, Preet Bharara, was fired Mar. 11 after refusing to step down, according to The Guardian. In a tweet Bharara said, “I did not resign. Moments ago I was fired. Being the U.S. Attorney in SDNY will forever be the greatest honor of my professional life.” During Bharara’s seven years as a top prosecutor he pursued investigations into the corruptions in Wall Street and politics as reported by The Guardian. And during the time he asked to resign, Bharara was overseeing into the associates and aids of Andrew Cuomo and Bill de Blasio, Democratic governor and mayor. Bharara was also investigating claims that Fox News had failed to report to shareholders of sexual harassment cases settled against former CEO Roger Ailes.
Bharara was one of the 46 U.S. attorneys appointed by Barack Obama asked to resign as reported by The New York Times. The act of changing out attorneys, while not new, is usually done in phases according The Guardian. The order came as a shock to Bharara as he was asked by Donald Trump in a meeting late last year to stay and he agreed to it. Bharara said to The Guardian, “presumably because he’s a New Yorker and is aware of the great work that our office has done over the past seven years, asked to meet with me to discuss whether or not I’d be prepared to stay on as the United States attorney to do the work we have done, independently, without fear or favor for the last seven years.” Bharara would later add that the meeting had been good, that he had agreed to stay on and that even Sessions had asked he stayed on. known if the call had been made to explain Trump’s decision change or if it was to discuss another topic, as the White House would not comment on it reported The New York Times. The morning of Mar. 11 in an article by
The Guardian it was reported from anonymous sources from the Associated Press and other outlets that Bharara had not plan to resign, at least not yet. After Bharara’s refusal to step down the president’s administration fired
him, as they did with acting attorney general Sally Yates. There was no comments made on the firings by the justice department after they were referred to for questions by the White House.

The United States Labor Department reported Friday Mar. 10 a gain of 235,000 jobs in February, President Trump’s full first month in office. “The economy is riding a wave of bullish sentiment post election,” said Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist at Glassdoor, a career website. “We’re seeing strong labor demand across the board and no sign of slowing right now.” The job growth continues a trend since the previous administration under Barack Obama. Comparing figures, February 2016 saw a gain of 242,000 jobs and February 2015 saw a gain of 295,000 jobs. President Trump, then as a candidate, frequently dismissed the jobs report as “phony” during President Obama’s tenure. However, Press Secretary Sean Spicer quoted the president during a press conference, “They may
have been phony in the past, but it’s very real now.” The unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent in February, near what the Federal Reserve would consider full employment. This also is a continuation of the trend of the jobless rate that began under Barack Obama. Democrats have been quick to point out that these reports are because of the efforts of the previous administration. Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, stated that Mr. Trump should not take credit for the job gains. “Trump inherited an economy from Barack Obama with the longest streak of private sector job growth in history,” he said. Aside from the politics usually associated with the jobs report, there remain damning facts that do not paint a rosy picture for either party. A lot of the recovery has been centered around large metropolitan areas. The Bureau of Labor Sta-
tistics reported that large urban centers have had more than twice the annual wage growth of nonmetropolitan areas. “Higher-wage jobs might be following educated, young workers, who are increasingly living in dense, urban neighborhoods as other demographic groups move to the suburbs,” said Jed Kolko, chief economist at Indeed, a jobsearch site. “Broader economic shifts also favor big cities: The occupations projected to grow tend to be more urban, while shrinking sectors like manufacturing and farming tend to be located outside large metros.” A fact that may not be too pleasing for Republican leaning voters. Likewise, voters who lean Democrat are likely to not be impressed by some of the data. Elise Gould, an economist at the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute, noted that, “Workers throughout the economy, including young workers, workers of color, and low-wage workers, need a chance to make up lost ground on wage growth.”

Hosni Mubarak, the former president of Egypt what was overthrown in 2011 due to an uprising formed by the people, is set to be released from prison after a six year sentence. Originally sentenced to life in jail, Mubarak’s time was cut short when the jury cleared him of all charges. The court had previously found him guilty of embezzling government funds to renovate his palaces. This past March 2, Egypt’s court acquitted Mubarak of any involvement in the killings. Mubarak is linked to the
murder of 900 civilians that were protesting during the revolution. Mubarak and his two sons were held on corruption charges early January 2016. Despite being released Mubarak is currently in the hospital after a long history of doctor’s visits and alleged illnesses. In a telephone interview, Ibrahim Saleh, a prosecutor from Cairo, had this to say “As far as I am concerned he was in prison until today, and now he is free.” Mubarak is currently at the hospital after a long history of doctor’s visits and illness. Many civilians believe his stay in the hospital is more political than an actual punishment.
Contaminated Water Threatens Hundreds Of Thousands Throughout Calfornia LISA GARCIA Reporter lisa.garcia5612@my.riohondo.edu
Thousands of Californians have recently begun to complain about their water being contaminated. NBC 7 news had discovered that more than 3,000 people in the San Diego area are without safe tap water. State investigations showed high levels of arsenic, uranium, nitrates and lead in the tap water supply of at least 14 different communities in the San Diego area. Recent discoveries by the California water resource control board showed that some 700,000 people in California are currently being exposed to contaminate water in homes and even in schools such as San Ysidro elementary school. More areas including San Diego, Potrero, Pauma Valley, and Borrego Springs are exposed due to the fact that they are considered poorer rural communities. The number of people with toxic water could very well be higher since State data doesn’t account for nearly 2 million Californians and many rely on private wells. Resident Juana Gonzalez says
her kids bathing time is now strictly business since her family moved into Oak Vale Park mobile home community. She stated “When I shower my kids, I use to give them hot baths, but not anymore,” said Gonzalez, “Now we just wash, rinse, and get out.” In Gonzalez’s home, levels of uranium and other radioactive materials have tested at more than five times the limit the Environmental Protection Agency says is safe to drink. “Bathing with water that contains uranium is not a health concern” said a spokesperson for the EPA, but Gonzalez said it still makes her uneasy. Executive Director Laurel Firestone of the community water center said “There are really serious health impacts from some of these contaminants. It can cause cancer (and) in the case of nitrate in very high levels, it can even cause death after a few days of high exposure.” Whether it is in schools or homes, more testing is being done to assure safer water supply. Although some people are still experiencing it. It is something that will continue to be improved and worked on.

President of South Korea, Park Geun-hye, was formally removed from office due to a corruption scandal as reported by the New York Times. The decision brings an end to the career of South Korea’s first female president who was also the daughter of Cold War military dictator Park Chung-hee. Back in Dec. 2016 Park was stripped of her power after a legislative impeachment vote, but was still allowed to live in the presidential Blue House while she awaited the Constitutional Court’s decision. The corruption scandal that cost Park her presidency mainly involved Park’s friend and informal adviser, Choi Soon-sil. Soon-sil was accused of attempting fraud and abusing power after claims came up accusing her of having access to secret government documents and of intervening in state affairs as reported by CNN. Park was accused of being influenced by Choi, who is now on trial for abusing power and fraud. It was agreed by the Constitutional Court that Park abused her authority
by helping Choi raise money for foundations set by Choi through donations from companies. The scandal now also includes Lee Jae-yong, head of Samsung, who was charged with bribing Park and Choi and is now going to face jailing as reported by The New York Times. During the ruling’s national broadcast Acting Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi said the court decided to dismiss Park for committing “acts that violated the Constitution and laws” during her time as president according to The New York Times. Park’s acts “betrayed the trust of the people and were of the kind that cannot be tolerated for the sake of protecting the Constitution,” Justice Lee said. While there was no comment from Park on the ruling, Myung-jin, the leader of Park’s political party said he “humbly respected” the ruling. The removal of Park is expected to shift South Korea’s politics to the left-wing opposition, who want to have more engagement with North Korea and are cautious about major confrontation in the region. Its reported by The New York Times that they said they will be re-examining the
country’s joint strategy with the U.S. on North Korea and defuse tension with China, that emerged because of the growing military presence of America in Asia. The ruling of Park’s removal caused protests from her supporters which left 30 police officers and protesters injured and a few dead. The three protesters age 60, 72, and 74 died during protests, one was reported by The New York Times as dying due to falling off a police bus. ”We lost our liberty. We lost our Korea,” one supporter said in a report from CNN. But there were also anti Park supporters on the streets who celebrated the announcement. Around 21,000 officers and 270 units were put out before the announcement was made in case protests broke out. With the removal of Park she will be stripped of her immunity and be legally responsible to face prosecution. There will also be a speedy presidential election in 60 days though South Korea’s temporary president warns that North Korea may take advantage of South Korea during this time of uncertainty as reported by CNN.
GOP Unveils Healthcare Plan to Replace Obamacare XAVIER ALATORRE Reporter

Paul Ryan and House Republicans released the American Health Care Act last Monday, Mar. 6, their replacement bill to the ACA, or Obamacare. The bill comes after six long years of opposition against Obamacare and a promise to “repeal and replace” the Affordable Care Act. Now with control of the House, the Senate, and the White House, Republicans are able to deliver on that promise to their constituents. However, the plan to replace Obamacare has been met with stiff opposition from other Republicans in congress and the Republican electorate. Rand Paul of Kentucky has called the replacement
bill “Obamacare Lite” arguing that the bill is simply a new entitlement program. The AHCA would repeal the subsidies under Obamacare and replace them with an advanceable tax credit that consumers can use to purchase health insurance. Republicans in states that have received health care through the Medicaid expansion under Obamacare feel particularly vulnerable. The expansion allowed citizens that once earned too much to be eligible for Medicaid now able to receive healthcare under Obamacare. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released its assessment of the GOP bill and warned that 14 million Americans would lose their insurance, with 24 million being uninsured by 2026, reports KTLA. House Speaker Paul Ryan
was on the defensive over the weekend, anticipating a poor CBO report. “The one thing I’m certain will happen is CBO will say, ‘Well, gosh, not as many people will get coverage.’ You know why? Because this isn’t a government mandate,” Ryan said to CBS over the weekend. Another GOP aide added, “They’re saying people are losing coverage, but in reality, these people are making a choice.” However, the Kaiser Family Foundation attributes the drop-off in coverage to the decrease in federal subsidies. Analysis by the KFF found that counties that voted for Trump would see less in tax credits that are, by design of the GOP bill, supposed to make insurance premiums more affordable.

On Mar. 7, WikiLeaks commenced its latest series of leaks code-named “Vault 7,” including 8,761 documents and files regarding the United States Central Intelligence Agency’s powerful hacking tools that can target everyday devices including smart tv, cell phone, and car. The U.S. government is potentially surveilling billions of users worldwide according to the WikiLeaks documents released, which is the largest publication of confidential documents on the agency, with reports of the CIA having the capability to record the sounds, images, as well as the private text messages of users. Along with spying capabilities, the CIA has also reportedly studied if they could possibly infect vehicle control systems which WikiLeaks claims could be used to get away with “nearly undetect-
able assassinations.” Due to the archive being unauthorizedly circulated amongst current and former U.S. hackers as well as contractors, portions have been provided to WikiLeaks to disclose the first full part of the series, titled “Year Zero.” “Year Zero” shows the lengths the CIA is going to for their global covert hacking program that includes malware arsenal and dozens of weaponized exploits that target a variety of popular products. The products included are Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android, Microsoft’s Windows, and even as far as Samsung Smart TV’s which can be put into a dummy off mode when in reality they are on and acting as a microphone. “After infestation, ‘Weeping Angel’ places the target TV in a “Fake-Off” mode, so that the owner falsely believes the TV is off when it is on. In “Fake-Off” mode the TV operates as a bug, re-
cording conversations in the room and sending them over the Internet to a covert CIA server.” The problem with the CIA creating these weaponized malware is that once a cyber ‘weapon” is created, it can end up spreading around the world in a matter of seconds only to be used by rival hackers alike. The CIA’s malware and hacking tools are created by Engineering Development Group (EDG), which is a software development group within the Center for Cyber Intelligence. Along with EDG, the CIA also has a Mobile Devices Branch (MDB) which has developed a number of attacks that would allow them to remotely hack and control popular smart phones allowing the CIA to request a user’s geolocation, audio or text communications and as far as to covertly activate the phone’s camera and microphone without the user being aware.
The MDB ultimately produces malware to infest, control, and exfiltrate data from both iPhones and Google Androids, which are used to run a majority of the world’s smartphones. These malware allow the CIA to bypass encryption by hacking the smartphone and collecting all the data before the encryption is even applied, posing a major threat to national security in the U.S. if similar malware were to get into the wrong hands. Furthermore, after the Edward Snowden NSA leaks, the U.S. technology industry made a commitment to disclose any serious vulnerabilities, bugs or exploits to Apple, Google, Microsoft as well as other U.S. based manufacturers. When these vulnerabilities are not reported to the manufacturers, it places a huge risk for all towards cyber criminals who may be aware of the vulnerabilities at play, thus taking advantage of the opportunity to hack
you. Even though the U.S. government abides by the Vulnerabilities Equities Process, which basically means they would disclose all pervasive vulnerabilities discovered after 2010, “Year Zero” documents clearly indicate that the CIA breached the Obama administration’s commitments by failing to disclose those vulnerabilities. By doing so, the CIA is able to attack software through undisclosed security vulnerabilities, which can be mimicked by anyone who discovers these same vulnerabilities and they will remain concealed from Apple and Google until the CIA discloses them, allowing the vulnerabilities to be fixed. Until then, phones will remain hackable. “By hiding these security flaws from manufacturers like Apple and Google the CIA ensures that it can hack everyone, at the expense of leaving everyone hackable.”

The current state of Mars is known to be dry, cold and unlivable, but a new idea from scientist may have found a way to change these conditions with the help of a magnetic shield reported by phys.org. The idea came from NASA’s Planetary Science Division, PSD, during their community workshop called
Planetary Science Vision 2050 Workshop hosted in their headquarters in Washington, DC between February 27 to March 1. Scientist and researchers from all around the world came to the event that had presentations and panel discussions, including discussions on the future of space travel. The last day was when the idea was presented by Jim Green, director of PSD, with the discussion being titled A Future Mars Environment

A general agreement in the scientific community is that at one point Mars had a magnetic shield like Earth that protected its atmosphere, but then around 4.2 billion years ago the shield disappeared and Mars’ atmosphere went from being warm and went to cold and dry

These potential changes to the planet’s atmosphere would not only help revert the planet’s surface, but also make it more easy for scientist to be able to explore the planet paving the way to colonization. As of now Green and his colleagues are testing the theory with simulations and reviewing results to see how long these potential changes would happen.

newest console, the Nintendo Switch. The console has been on the market for over two weeks with some critics suggesting this is Nintendo’s last chance to make it in the market. Can the Switch make up for the Wii U’s issues or will Nintendo end up like Sega and become a third-party game maker? After having some time to play with the Switch and here are my thoughts. The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid video game console, with the main system comprising the “Switch Console”, “Switch Dock” and the “JoyCon” controllers. The main unit of the Switch is the Console, tablet-like monitor that comprises a screen measuring 6.2 inches. The Console includes an audio jack, stereo speakers on the bottom of the unit, a USB-C port for charging while out of the Dock, and a kickstand on the backside. Right out of the box, the player can expect to find the Switch Tablet, two “Joy-Cons”, a dock for the Switch as well as a docking controller gamepad for the two “Joy-Cons”, two straps for the “Joy-Cons”, and an HDMI cord. The Console, with or without Joy-Con attached, can be placed into the Switch Dock, and through the inputs of HDMI can display all actions on the tablet to a TV set. Here lies the true reason for the name Switch. Players can game on their TVs at home and then pick up
the tablet and continue their gaming session on the go. The controllers can be used in four ways: attached to the Switch Console via the side rails, removed and used separately by a single player in each hand, attached to a frame called the Joy-Con Grip to provide a gamepad or used as individual controllers for two players. A single Switch console can support up to eight Joy-Con connections. The controls also have a feature called “HD Rumble” which is supposed to mimic the feeling and weight of any item in the world. For example, a player would be able to get the same feeling they would get if they shake a cup of ice. The weight of said glass plus the movement of the ice is simulated through the control which can be used the make video games even more immersive. The Switch is an amazing system, but there are some downfalls with owning one as of now. First, the friend list system. Friend codes are back again and this is disappointing considering how many people have voiced against these back during the Wii’s life cycle. To make it worse, players can’t even interact with their friend at this time of publishing which is much different than the Xbox One and PS4. That is if you can even see your friends online due to the system not logging a player online until they start playing a game. Another big disappoint-
ment is the lack of games in Nintendo’s E-shop. With a company that has literally every big hit from their past via the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS shops, why isn’t this available at launch? The games have already been converted into digital format for other systems, so why not have that ready and have the biggest library of the game ready to play day one? Overall, as a Nintendo fan, I am very happy with how the system works and the creative ways the Switch can change the gaming landscape in the future. That being said, if you aren’t a fan I would wait on a bit more games to come out before getting your hands on one. My reason being that “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” is one out of three games that are worth the cost of the Switch right now. I recommend anyone even remotely interested in going out and trying a demo unit out to see how the system works. Even with a small library of games out right now, it’s exhilarating to see what will become of the Switch in the future. Whether that is the excitement of seeing Nintendo bounce back into glory or burn out is still up in the air. As of now, I feel like I did back when I got my Nintendo 64 back on Christmas day and I wouldn’t trade that for any high-performance PC, PS4 Pro, nor Xbox’s Project Scorpio.

Nintendo pulls the switch on at home consoles and looks for the next big thing since the Game Boy Nintendo was hoping to grab millions of users like its previous console, the original Wii. Before the holidays there were hundreds of thousands of units sold of the mini retro original Nintendo Entertainment System that came pre-loaded with games. Now in the beginning of the 2017 year something called the Nintendo Switch was offered and some players are furious as Epstein writes in BGR which is a online blog for Tech entertainment business science and politics. A huge problem that is concerning many fans of the Nintendo franchise is that the new Switch Hardware design is not able to store memory
onto a smart television or through Wi-Fi connection and it’s not switchable between consoles. Marketing for the unit didn’t come cheap, as the company spent millions of dollars for a 30 second super bowl commercial. In summary Nintendo is
killing the industry with new and exciting gadgets that offer the latest in single player and two player modules. Nintendo is relying on something that has revamped many industries around the globe, known to most with the terms “retro” “classic,” “new edition.” Nintendos shares have skyrocketed in recent months especially around the
time of release of the Classic NES. Nintendos flagship game strays from the 90s Mario but rather reintroduces popular character “Zelda” in the Switch new lineup. Sony stays ahead of the game with its recently introduced VR headset, not since Nintendo’s wii has a product in the gaming industry been so hyped.

Web Developer Albert Bretado is making strides toward the future in society and at Rio Hondo College. Web development is one of the many facets attached to Bretado’s charismatic persona but it wasn’t his profes-
sion, nor was his upbringing simple. “When I was growing up in Norwalk, it wasn’t the best. It was really filled with a lot of crime and it made it really easy to hang out with the wrong crowd,” said Bretado. He acknowledges that growing up in Norwalk had an effect on the people he hung out with that led him astray. Bretado mentions his brother was also heading in
the wrong direction. After making a commitment to enlist in the U.S. military, Bretado’s life improved dramatically. He took note from his brother, whose life also changed when enlisted after graduating from high school. Bretado served as a military-army recruiter for many years which is part of the reason he works at Rio Hondo now. He credits his experience
as part of the reason he chose to work at Rio Hondo as a web developer. “As a military-army recruiter, I was motivated to help kids that were in the same situation that I was in,” explained Bretado. He knows all aspects of a computer and believes students should know the basics of web developing. He explains that coding is part of the future. He also believes that schools teaching students to be technologically savvy are a gateway to opportunities. Even though his envi-
ronment led him astray, as a high school student, Bretado discovered his love for web development through his favorite game, “Delta Force” in which he learned to develop a website for. Today, Bretado continues with his “Delta Force” far beyond initial expectations by developing, implementing, and maintaining web design and development for the college. A game he truly enjoys every day.

This past Sunday March 5 Fashion Designer Demna Gvasalia - creative director of Balenciaga - sent out a new fashion statement to Paris Fashion Show’s runway featuring repurposed automobile objects. Celebrating Balenciaga’s 100th Anniversary, Gvasalia wanted a new look and an inspiration behind it. Referring back to Cristobal Balenciaga founder of Fashion House and label - lookbook Gvasalia drew ideas and pulled off coats, skirts, handbags and even jewelry into this year’s event. Down came models in an asymmetrical coat that’s buttoned off to one’s shoulder, wrapped in a rubber car mat pencil skirt, side view mirror clutch and or car tire covers made into totes. Thoughts behind the designers automobile chic had been on a recently purchased vehicle. Also added to the collection were key strawn necklaces and bracelets of all shapes and sizes. Nonetheless, this new fashion statement left audiences head and eyes amazed. Before ending the show, Gvasalia’s last set of haute couture were fully oversized ball gowns that have not been shown
since Cristobal Balenciaga’s time. “They are all made by hand. The pieces all came together yesterday, like it happens in couture, last minute, because there were so many people working on them,” Gvasalia said. From last minute put togethers and bringing back former fashion styles it is safe to say fashion trendsetter Demna Gvasalia broke the record again. Hard Days Night pays homeage to classic Beatles sounds
Hard Days Night performs in The Beatle’s Shea Stadium outfits, playing several songs from that era Mar. 11 at the Wray Theater.

Beatles enthusiasts filled seats in the Wray Theater at Rio Hondo College Mar. 11 for a one of a kind experience put on by Beatles tribute band Hard Day’s Night. The attendees, old and young, were not let down. Audience members heard countless songs that were sung in a near exact tone to The Beatle’s, and Hard Day’s Night members nailed the exact look from clothing to instruments to match The Beatle’s aesthetic. The name of the band, Hard Day’s Night, comes from the 1964 self-titled album and song, “A Hard Day’s Night.” The band, from Los Angeles, is comprised of four members, and each one plays the role of a Beatle, with Gilbert Bonilla as John Lennon, Frank Mendonca as Paul McCartney, Doug Couture as George Harrison, and Jeremy O’Dell as Ringo Starr. This first ever event was made possible by the Division of Arts and Cultural Programs at Rio. The event started at 7:30 p.m., but people were arriving as early as 5:30 to get good seats for the show. As their performance began, the audience was
shown a clip of The Ed Sullivan Show with The Beatles performing for the first time ever in the United States and marked what would be one of the most iconic moments in music history. The Beatles, in their well known black suits and mop top hair, would don this look for nearly three years as their fanbase and popularity rose in the next several years. Hard Day’s Night came out in the same attire and
Hard Day’s Night finished the first part of the performance with “Yesterday,” a more somber song that makes everyone remember about a lost love. Songs like the famously known “Twist And Shout” had reenergized the crowd after the final song from the first set and the song “Act Naturally,” that had a country feel to it with the acoustic guitar and Starr’s vocals accentuating the song. The crowd cheered

Ending the third part of the show was the song, “A Day In The Life.” It had a very creepy sound sung by Lennon, yet uplifting when McCartney began to sing. The final video contained people who were singing their favorite Beatles song, an impact the band would have on many people, then and now. Even though The Beatles would have creative differences that would lead to their breakup, their final years still proved that they still had a knack for making great music. “Get Back, Don’t Let Me Down,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Revolution” were all songs that had an upbeat feeling to it that brought the audience in for the finale. The last song Hard Day’s Night performed was “Hey Jude,” one of the most famous Beatles songs. The crowd sung the song, and seeing them enjoy themselves gave it such a Beatles-esque feel to it. The show brought back some of the great hits that The Beatles produced and Hard Day’s Night’s spectacular performance only makes us wish that The Beatles were here now to make more music and provide us with more memories.

Even with headliner complications, Ska, Punk, and Reggae lovers rejoiced at this years Skanking Reggae Fest, Mar. 11, located at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. One day before the fest, it was announced that previous headliners Panteon Rococo and Antidoping would not be performing due to visa complications. Adrian Gonzalez, the festival’s founder and drummer for Raskahuele, elaborated on the complication, “Having started the process within four months [it is] rare not to get them. It would usually take around two months to get them in a normal request and three weeks in a express request… it’s the first time this has happened to them.” Gonzalez explained. “People might say that we producers already knew about this, of course we knew, but what we didn’t know was that at the moment of requesting [the visas] if they were going to tell us yes or no.”

The old saying goes “the show must go on,” and it did so without a hitch. Filling in the fest’s empty spots were Maskatesta and Raskahuele, and they performed with the same amount of energy and enthusiasm as the rest of the bands. All the way from Argentina, Los Caligaris, who built their reputation by performing in Chile, Peru, and Mexico, played one of the most energizing sets of the night. Their two tone sound was brought to life through blaring synchronized trumpets and an invigorated singer; their performance could make an introvert get up and dance. The Slackers voiced their frustration with Rococo and Antidoping’s visa complications, shouting “we gotta be united, right?” before playing “Sooner or Later,” a song that was announced to be aimed at President Donald Trump. The lyrics state “I ain’t got no time for your violent little mind… you try to get me and you might get gat.” Their Reggae oriented sound turned the exuberant night around, preparing the audience for Dread Mar I’s Reggeton set. Throughout the night, fans and artist shared a unity with one another. People in the crowd were not afraid to dance or “skank” alongside each other, especially in-between sets when DJ’s would play Cumbia. Gonzalez talked about his ambition to create an identity for the ska genre and how it influenced the creation of this festival; his ambition ultimately became a reality, “In past years, the music (ska) was way deep in the genre of rock. If you went to iTunes and searched “rock,” that was the only way you could find ska… Now ska is a genre by itself, declared by the NAMM association [National Association of Music Merchants] last year,” Gonzalez said. Skanking Reggae Fest was a success on all fronts despite the last minute lineup changes; it gives fans of the developing genre a chance to rejoice with one another outside of local DIY scenes.

March 7, a day women are celebrated for being totally awesome. It’s an important day, but, why should we be celebrated just one day out of 365? Being a woman at times isn’t the easiest when the media tries to define and categorize you into something that’s generally impossible,
often told that the way we look or dress isn’t feminine at all. It’s great to live in a society where even celebrities feel the need to speak out about how uncomfortable they feel wearing makeup to cover up their imperfections. No intentional disrespect to those who choose to wear it; as a woman who doesn’t, it’s refreshing to see artists like Alicia Keys take a stand against society and be the way she’s most comfortable.
Emma Watson is a proud feminist who actively represents women all over the world. Being a feminist is often frowned upon by many I’ve met. Everyone should love and appreciate our bodies in any way and remain feminists without judgement. We live in a time where we shouldn’t have to demand equality. We can be whoever we want to be. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, whether it’s to
a world renowned artist, a superstar athlete, C.E.O. of a company, journalist, or even the President of the United States. Anything is possible, empower your fellow man, woman, human. You are worth it, you are beautiful, you are intelligent. At the end of the day we are all human beings with beating hearts and all. Love thyself, love others.

Ending their three game losing streak in the South Coast conference, the Rio Hondo College baseball team reestablished themselves by winning their game against the Long Beach City College Vikings by a score of 5-1. After losing consecutive games to LA Harbor Mar.7 and Mar. 9, Rio Hondo needed to catch a break and find some winning momentum. Rio Hondo showed their courage to come up with a win after losing three consecutive for the first time this season. Playing the first game of the series home inside The Jungle Mar. 11, the Vikings started the game by striking out looking and swinging for the first two out of the inning. Pitcher for Rio Hondo, Isaiah Ramos then got hitter Vincent Bird to pop out to make three outs. In the bottom of the first the Roadrunners made some noise by scoring two runs on
two hits. Centerfielder Nick Ybarra started off the inning with a leadoff walk. Catcher Danny Marquez then safely sacrifice bunted Ybarra over to second base. Ybarra then advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Clean up hitter, Randy Buenrostro then singled in Ybarra to take an early but subtle lead of 1-0. Immediately after, the next hitter Gabe Chavez hit a double to bring in Buenrostro all the way from first base. After one inning, Rio led 2-0. Pitcher, Ramos, did a phenomenal job in his pitching performance going 9 innings allowing 5 hits and only giving up 1 run. The 5’10” 160 pound freshman from Monrovia High School, proved to be a dependable arm for the team. In the bottom on the second inning the Roadrunners’ bats once again came alive when Nick Ybarra RBI singled in Marcos Rivas. Soon after, R.J. Romo singled in Cesar Sandoval to jump out to a comfortable 4-0 lead.

Long Beach City remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Viking slugger, Val Stammler hit a rocket of a home run over the left field fence. After giving up the solo home run, Ramos kept his composer and struck out the side. The game went on scoreless for the next four innings until the Roadrunners added on an insurance run. A two out rally began when catcher Danny Marquez singled to reach first safely. R.J romo then did what he is known for by doubling in the left center gap to easily score the speedy Marquez. The score was now 5-1 and proved to be all Ramos needed to secure his first collegiate victory. The Roadrunners advance to 10-7 on the season and improve to 2-3 in the South Coast Conference. Rio Hondo looks forward to facing Long Beach once again Mar. 14 on the road. The next home game will be Mar. 16, a South Coast Conference battle against El Camino College Compton.

The Rio Hondo College softball team has gone through a tough five consecutive losses, most recently falling out against San Diego City College Mar. 10 dropping their overall record to 6-12 overall and 0-2 in conference as the team continues to try to snap out of their losing streak. During Rio Hondo’s losing stretch, the team has only managed to score a total of six runs while taking in thirty-five. The Lady Roadrunners suffered an 8-0 shut out the day before against Pasadena City College, as the Lancers attacked pitcher Brenae Martinez by getting a whopping four runs early on in the bottom of the first inning to start the game off fiercely for Pasadena City. Off to an excellent start, Pasadena City College would extend on their lead by getting another run in the second inning followed by three
more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to close out the game with the mercy-rule. Rio Hondo pitcher, Martinez, allowed a total of ten hits on the evening and only struck out one opponent over the course of 4 2/3 innings. While the Lady Roadrunners were unable to get on the scoreboard against Pasadena City College, Tiana Rodriguez, Alicia Olivas and Marissa Macias managed to get singles for Rio Hondo but those were the only three hits the team got on the evening. After their shutout, the Lady Roadrunners returned to action hosting San Diego City College Mar. 10, but unfortunately were still unable to shake their losing streak which has now extended to five games Losing 5-2 against the Knights. Rio Hondo College will next look to host Mt. San Antonio College Mar. 14 for a South Coast Conference matchup followed by another home game against El Camino College Mar. 16.
