Whittier Police Department Officer Keith Boyer and his partner, Officer Patrick Hazel were shot Monday Feb. 20 while responding to a traffic accident; Officer Boyer died at the hospital, his partner, Officer Hazel is expected to make a full recovery. The shooting occurred on the corner of Mar Vista and Colima Drive when the officers in question responded to a traffic accident in the City of Whittier. A motorist, who claimed his car was rear-ended by the suspect, made the call. The suspect disabled two vehicles during the accident and tried getting help moving his vehicle from the people he struck, according to Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Lt. John Corina.
Lt. Corina stated that the officers tried to pull the suspect out of the car and pat him down when the suspect pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and opened fire at the officers. The officers were wearing bulletproof vests and shot back, Corina stated. Both officers were taking to local area hospitals. The suspect, who could only be identified as a 26-year-old, heavily tattooed man, was injured and detained. He is speculated to be a gang member that was recently paroled from prison, as stated by Lt. Corina. Hundreds of law enforcement came out to escort Boyer’s body via motorcade from UC Irvine Medical Center to the Orange County Coroner’s Office in Santa Ana later that same day In an interview done with the victim’s family with CBS’s Erica
Mandy, they stated that the suspect killed his cousin Roy Torres, age 47, in his cousin’s garage around 5:30 am in East Los Angeles. Roy Torres’s aunt said that “My heart goes out to those officers who got hurt. I know they were doing their job.” The suspect was under the AB109 probation program allowing for qualified offenders with no history of violent, serious or registerable sex offenses, or other exclusionary offenses to serve their sentencing under local county level, or report to local county probation officers instead of state parole officers. “They walked up on the vehicle believing the motorist was in need of medical help and then they ended up in a gunfight for their lives,” Sheriff Jim McDonnell said. “You don’t know what these
officers deal with on a daily basis,” Whittier Police Chief Jeff Piper said at the ceremony. Chief Piper described Officer Boyer as a friend for 25 years and all of the department has been grieving. Officer Boyer left behind children, loved to play the drums and played music with Chief Piper in a band. A ceremony was held to honor Boyer’s 28 year legacy of service. Police say that 2,000 came to the event, lighting candles in the night as prayers and well wishes were said towards those affected. “I know what Keith would say to me right now… he would say to me stop crying all day and write me a some songs,” Piper said emotionally promising to do just that to honor his friend.

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) has rescinded the keynote speaker slot from Milo Yiannopoulos and disinvited him from the conference following heinous comments about pederasty made by the alt-right provocateur. “Due to the revelation of an offensive video in the past 24 hours condoning pedophilia, the American Conservative Union has decided to rescind the invitation,” said Matt Schlapp, chairman of the group that sponsors CPAC, in a statement. Yiannopoulos defended himself in a Facebook post, stating, “My own experiences as a victim led me to believe I could say anything I wanted to on this subject, no matter how outrageous. But I understand ...that my usual blend of British sarcasm, provocation and gallows humor might have come across as flippancy, a lack of care for other victims or, worse, ‘advocacy.’” However,

Milo Yiannopoulos’s comments caused his book deal and CPAC invitation to be revoked.
Schlapp found the defense insufficient and rescinded his invitation. Yiannopoulos, who is also the technology editor at Breitbart, was initially invited to speak despite having a long history of making controversial statements that sometimes ran counter to conservatism. CPAC organizers invited the firebrand personality as a response to what they viewed as an attack on free speech after Yiannopoulos was unable to speak at UC Berkeley due to violent protests started by antifa, as quoted by The Guardian. Along with being disinvited from CPAC, Yiannopoulos’ publisher announced the cancellation of his book deal. Publisher Simon & Schuster announced their decision in a statement Monday, “After careful consideration, Simon & Schuster and its Threshold Editions imprint have cancelled publication of ‘Dangerous’ by Milo Yiannopoulos.” The publisher faced harsh criticism after it paid Yiannopoulos a $250,000 advance for the forthcoming book. Yiannopoulos’ inflammatory remarks, beyond the most recent comments made, have been steeped in Islamophobia, homophobia - despite being homosexual himself, and misogyny. His Twitter account was disabled after he targeted “Saturday Night Live” cast member, Leslie Jones. He resigned from Breitbart Feb. 21 after rampant criticism over his apparent pro pedophilia comments. “I would be wrong to allow my poor choice of words to detract from my colleagues’ important reporting, so today I am resigning from Breitbart, effective immediately,’’ Yiannopoulos said in an announcement as reported by New York Times.
Trump Campaign Aides Were in Contact With Russia the Year Before the Election XAVIER ALATORRE Reporter
xavier.alatorre1457@my.riohondo.edu
Amid the resignation of National Security Adviser, Lt. Gen. (ret) Michael Flynn, phone records show that President Trump’s campaign team was in contact with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the 2016 election, according to current and former American officials, reports the New York Times. American intelligence agencies began intercepting communications during the campaign after evidence showed Russia was attempting to interfere with the election. The intelligence officials also stated that the communication between Russia and Trump’s team was not limited to campaign officials, but also included close associates of the President. Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, had been
in contact with Russia for several months and had worked as a political consultant in Ukraine. Russia annexed the Crimean region of Ukraine in 2014 in a brazen show of aggression. Despite evidence showing he was in contact with Russian officials, Mr. Manafort has denied speaking to Russian intelligence officers. “I have no idea what this is referring to. I have never knowingly spoken to Russian intelligence officers, and I have never been involved with anything to do with the Russian government or the Putin administration or any other issues under investigation today,” he said in a phone interview according to the New York Times. The FBI is also examining intercepted calls made by Carter Page, a former policy adviser to Mr. Trump, Roger Stone, a longtime republican consultant, and Mr. Flynn. Mr. Trump asked for Gen. Flynn’s resignation after
Flynn admitted he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about his phone calls with a Russian diplomat, Sergey I. Kislyak. Flynn discussed the possible removal of sanctions against Russia imposed by then-president Barack Obama. The former NSA repeatedly denied, to the FBI and Vice President Pence, about discussing sanctions with Russia. It is likely that the subject pertaining to the conversations will be examined. If it is revealed that the three men discussed foreign policy, or attempted to sway foreign policy in any way, it could be a violation of the Logan Act which prevents private citizens from negotiating foreign policy with a country which is in dispute with the United States.

Moon is on the Hai-Rise ANDREW RUDIN Science and Technology Editor
andrew.rudin5784@my.riohondo.edu
As far as legends go, Hai stands as a great player in the North American League of Legends Championship Series. He has come out of retirement three times for his invaluable knowledge as a shotcaller. Him and Aphromoo are the only two shotcallers in NA who have transcended the rest. He has won two NA LCS titles back-to-back and IEM season IX San Jose. In his latest comeback, Hai has proved his worth again taking his current team, FlyQuest, to the top of the standings. FlyQuest stands in second place in the 2017 Spring season just under his former team Cloud 9. They won their promotion games from the challenger scene into the NA LCS and has climbed the ranks. Historically, challenger teams drop the ball against top tier competition, but with how stacked the teams are this season FlyQuest has stepped up against their adversaries. Hai isn’t the only returning player as Balls, LemonNation, and Altec support their leader. Balls and LemonNation played in previous iterations of Cloud9 with Hai as top and support respectively while Altec has been in and out of LCS in underwhelming teams as the ADC. The team’s jungler,

Moon, is the new talent who has really proven himself in this team of veterans. Moon previously played on NRG last split, but proved to be an inconsistent team finishing 5th in the standings. They played during the lane swap meta before it was changed and Moon ended up being replaced by Santorin mid-season. The lane swap meta required more team synergy and Moon couldn’t shine in this meta. Now that he is on FlyQuest, Moon can finally prove himself. Moon and Hai are the main aggressors in this team
so their synergy between mid and jungler has to be top notch. Explosive performances by Moon and Hai shocked critics as they dominate the first two weeks of the split. Moon is naturally an aggressive jungler complementing Hai’s combative tendencies. Together, they work on early leads to control the map. At this stage of the game, Hai takes over and spreads his team like chess pieces. They play a split-pushing style, forcing the enemy team to spread out. This puts
IPhone Users are Less Likely to Date People with Androids DANIELLE ANZURES Staff Writer
danielle.anzures8473@my.riohondo.edu
There are many indicators for people on what would be a dealbreaker for a relationship, like conflicting religions, differing backgrounds, or political affiliations. However a recent survey shows that some people are also less likely to date each other if their smartphones are not the same as reported by MarketWatch. The survey, given to over 5,500 single people over the age of 18, showed that IPhone users are 21 times more likely to jcudge others who have an Android negatively. while Android users are 15 times more likely to do the same to IPhone users according to Digital Trends. Alongside that, the survey also revealed that those
with older model of either phones are 56% less likely to get a date. “We look for so many other ways in which we’re compatible with potential partners, why shouldn’t phones be on the list?” said Abby Rodman, a psychotherapist in Boston, in a report with MarketWatch. Despite IPhone and Android users feelings about each other they do agree on some things when it comes to first dates. Dating someone with bad grammar is a turnoff for 39 percent of people, 58 percent of people said they’d stay away from someone who complained on Facebook, and 50 percent of people would not date someone who they think spends too much time on social media according to Digital Trends.
“If you’re living every breath of your life out loud on social media, you may be perceived as not being reliable enough to honor the sanctity of another’s confidence or of a romantic relationship.” Rodman said in the report with MarketWatch. Alongside that crooked or discolored teeth are not for 37 percent of smartphones users and non-fashionable or a bad sense of style are a negative for 35 percent of people according MarketWatch. While this is not everyone’s preferences it is something to think about when you see a couple with their phones out.
FlyQuest on the front foot for most of the game, allowing them to take fights in their favor. The rest of the team supports as much as they can, but Moon puts his team ahead early on while Hai mans the helm late game. In recent weeks, FlyQuest had to prove themselves again as they played against the top two teams of the split, Cloud 9 and Team Solo Mid. FlyQuest lost both games, but what a series it was. Each match went to a full three games with FlyQuest pushing each team to their limits. Both C9 and TSM have
high levels of individual players who clearly outshine FlyQuest and yet were pushed to three games. Both teams clearly struggled against Hai’s shotcalling as he pressured the map appropriately to their advantages. The identity of FlyQuest did not falter, but the individual players of C9 and TSM prevailed. Credit has to be given to FlyQuest for performing at a top level even against the top two teams of the LCS.

Facebook videos will now play sound by default. It has garnered an audience with its video platform and is now taking steps to improve and monetize it. The majority of these changes are towards the Facebook phone app for android and ios. The video will not override music playing on the phone such as Spotify or Pandora. This change is not coming blind, however. Vice President of Facebook, Dan Rose, has been testing this feature on some users dating back to last August says The Verge. Facebook has found that most users are content with this change and are now ready to release it. For those who do not welcome the change, the settings can be adjusted in the settings panel of the
Facebook app. This change is garnered towards its mobile users as that is where a majority of their audience lies. Facebook’s video player has been growing for years and has many producers to create silent videos with text overlay to adapt to the previous style. It gathered a niche audience in this field and could be a contender to the popular Youtube videos. Because of its popularity, Facebook is ready to transition into the audio realm, but are its users ready? Their video player is popular because of its silent format and the creativity that producers and artists are able to take advantage of it. Would users really accept this change, or are they going to default back to the silent era? Until more data is gathered, Facebook can only wait.

Popped airbags, bright white lights. The crashing impact sounds from a head on collision had left 19-year-old, Malena Lopez hysterical and traumatized. On Friday, December 30, 2016 at 9:30 p.m., Lopez was driving home in the city of Downey, where she was suddenly hit on the cross streets of Firestone and Brookshire. Lopez recalls the moments leading up to the collision. “... about to reach the intersection where it was my right away to go straight; I noticed the guy on the opposite side slowing down, so as I took my turn to go, the guy assumed he was going to be quick enough and out beat me by making the left turn; too close that a head on collision happened”. bags, and her vehicle resting at a post. Two male witnesses came to her side and asked if she needed any help. After they managed to open the passen-
ger side, Lopez then asked if they could get her seatbelt off due to the loss of feeling on one of her arms. Once one of the guys removed the seat belt, Lopez yelped in pain from a broken arm. Two bones – inner and outer – were broken. Rushed to Downey’s local hospital, Kaiser Permanente, Lopez ended up having surgery resulting in two metal plates placed into her arm. Back at the scene - while being taken into care, Lopez’s dad who ended up staying behind alongside police exchanging information from the scratch-free suspect, who also had two other passengers free of injury. Suspect’s car has few bumps dents from the crash but nothing that will come close to Lopez’s totaled 2004 Beetle. “To this day I have a lot of pain” Lopez said “the one thing that has been a challenge is school. Since the
collision I am not as fast as I was before; writing fast, typing quick or just little arm movements here and there are a struggle.” Follow up therapy is in the process, and Lopez’s attorney is taking care of all the paperwork involved. Lopez is a full time sophomore student at Rio Hondo Community College whose dream is to become a journalist for Cosmopolitan or maybe the L.A. Times. Aside from school, she works part-time as a waitress for Chris n Pitts in Downey. Driving for about two years now, car accidents were a big fear to Lopez, one that became a reality that dreadful night. Lopez’s advice to all drivers is to be aware of all intersections and just drive carefully and alert. Thankfully our very own roadrunner is still a part of our family here and that the rest of the semester goes smoothly for her.

Twenty One Pilots perform Emotional Roadshow ANDREW RUDIN Science & Tech Editor andrew.rudin5784@my.riohondo.edu
What do you imagine when you hear the word “concert”? Live music? A theatrical show? Some may say “interacting with a band.” A concert can be many things to many different people, but this show, for me, was an Emotional Roadshow.Twenty One Pilots performed at the Honda Center February 15 and 16 for their world tour called Emotional Roadshow. I made it to the pit only because I had ordered my tickets eight months in advance. As for the February 16 performance, I had to line up five hours in advance to get as close to the stage as possible. TOP broke into mainstream popularity with their latest album “Blurryface.” Much of the songs performed mainly came from this album, since it is the album they are most known for. Many of TOP’s songs are rooted in poetry; therefore, they try to make the listener think when their music is played. However, when they perform, it is an entirely new experience. The fans of TOP, or “clique” as they call themselves, are intensely passionate about the music and the band. However, the show itself

Netflix’s Stranger things is a Wonderfully Strange Thing LISA GARCIA Reporter
“Stranger Things” is a Netflix show many have become very familiar with, even after only premiering a year ago. Receiving mostly positive reviews, it turned out to become the most talked about netflix original tv show to date, beating out the likes of shows such as “Daredevil” and “Orange is The New Black.” The plot is about a young boy in a small town in the year 1983 that goes missing. His family and friends go on a frantic search trying to find out what happened to him, which leads to the discovery telekinetic girl and blood crazed monsters that will leave you guessing what’s next. Season two is said to take place a year later during Halloween. It seems that Will Byers is going to be the new child that undergoes traumatic experiences being that he was having visions of the “upside down” at the end of season one and coughing up slugs. Season two will also be including a Ghostbusters theme for the Halloween episode, being that The Ghostbusters movie was released in 1984.

Title Card of the show, a black background with bright red letters, leaving much to the imagination
There are many reasons why “Stranger Things” is such a special show. First, it’s only eight episodes long. Second, the story is very clear from beginning to end, giving each character its proper show time for all of us to get to know them. Another reason is the incredible terrific sense of mystery involved, when the final credits came around it left you in wonder. Was eleven still alive? Was the monster truly dead? And when it comes to the pop culture references mentioned for the show, they were equally well put together. My personal favorite was when Dustin borrows an X-Men comic book from Will at the end of episode one, which is actually a very specific comic about Jean Grey,
a telekinetic mutant. She is kidnapped by a man working for an organization who taps into her powers to create a weapon out of her. Sound familiar? The story line leaves you with enough curiosity to give the ending a satisfied conclusion. In addition they have chosen a great cast. Winona Ryder, who I have never been a big fan of, truly took on this new role very well. The kids in this show, I think, couldn’t have been more perfect playing each part so well for being so young. I enjoyed the fact that they leave them to play detective and figure out the mysterious disappearance of their friend Will. Season two is bringing in new cast member, Sean Astin, who so happens to have starred in the Goonies
himself. He will be playing Winona’s new boyfriend, which I think will be a good add for the story considering the time era it is being based on. Another character whose personality I liked is Shannon Purser, who plays the unique Barb Holland. Like many others, I liked her because she takes on the character that not only viewers found relatable and smart, but realistic and unapologetic as well, especially when people made fun of her. In conclusion many have seen already that “Stranger Things” will definitely be a show that people will be talking about for a long time to come.

The Roadrunners hosted Merced College Feb. 16 at The Jungle, winning by a score of 6-4. Rio Hondo managed to get on the scoreboard early in the bottom of the first inning, with Randy Buenrostro’s double getting two RBI’s as Marcos Rivas and Nick Ybarra opened up the scoring for the Roadrunners. The top of the fourth inning saw Merced make a run for a comeback, with Alex Pallios scoring on a
wild pitch as Victor Tiscareno advanced to second base. Derek Molina singled to keep things going, advancing to second on the throw with one RBI, as Tiscareno made it home safely to tie the game at two a piece. Next up, Josh May singled for Merced advancing to second base as Molina made it in to make it a 3-2 game for the Blue Devils. Rio Hondo tied up the game in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to Alex Rodriguez’s sacrificial fly ball, that managed to get Gabe Chavez home safely to equalize the game for the Roadrunners. The bottom of the fifth inning saw R.J. Romo single to get teammate Ybarra in to
make it 4-3 for Rio Hondo before Ryan Frakes singled for Merced in the top of the seventh inning, allowing Gavin Gaffaney to tie the game up at four a piece. The bottom of the eighth inning closed out the game for Rio Hondo, Buenrostro singled and advanced to third on the throw, as Rivas scored on an error from the infield. With the momentum of the game very much alive, a Tony Rosario triple setup Chavez for the 6-4 victory over Merced College. Rio Hondo College will next travel to face San Diego Mesa College Feb. 23 after their Feb. 18 game against San Bernardino Valley College was postponed due to rain.

Lady Roadrunners softball team gets shut out by Cerritos College Falcons CRYSTIAN MENDOZA Sports Editor crystian.mendoza8414@my.riohondo.edu
VICTOR LOZANO / REPORTER Feb. 16- Rio Hondo College sophomore pitcher, Brenae Martinez, struggled against a tough Cerritos College offense who dominated the game as the Lady Roadrunners failed to produce.
Rio Hondo College’s softball team hosted Cerritos College Feb. 16 in a game that would turn out to be a very one sided affair for the Falcons, who defeated the Lady Roadrunners 7-0. Cerritos College started the game off strongly, with Kylee Brown hitting a double to bring home Rain Vega and Erica Guzman to give them a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Rio Hondo failed to produce in the bottom of the third giving Cerritos’ offense another chance to keep their momentum going. Guzman proceeded to do just that by powering a nicely timed hit between second and first base, but Karina Gomez was quick to get to the ball and catch it for an out. Anika Ortiz was next up to bat and made it safely onto first base, followed by teammate Desiree Flores who was walked. With two runners on base, Vega’s infield hit got her tagged out at first as Ashley Melendez followed and was walked to first. The bases were now loaded as Jissel Cabarello walked up to the plate. Cabarello hit a pop fly straight up, leaving for an easy catch for Rio’s catcher, Jelissa Castanon, to get the third out saving the Lady Roadrunners for the time be-
ing. The top of the fourth inning flew right by Rio Hondo as Cerritos College pitcher, Kristen Voller, continued to dominate with her powerful pitches which didn’t allow the Lady Roadrunners to make the contact they needed to get on the base in order to keep advancing. Loren Pichardo was tagged out at first, Serena Castrellon hit a foul ball that was caught out while pitcher Brenae Martinez was walked to first and replaced by another runner after being struck in the forearm. Castanon who was next up to bat was tagged out at first. With the top of the fifth inning about to commence, Rio Hondo had to come up with a plan to either stop Cerritos’ offense or start getting in some runs of their own. First up, Kimberly Olivia’s, hit a hard drive straight to third base where Pichardo reacted quickly and caught it for the first out. Brown was walked to first followed by a solid drive between second and first base by Briana Lopez who made it safely onto first but saw her teammate tagged out at third. Cerritos College continued to pressure Rio Hondo with Guzman getting a great hit sending Lopez and herself to the bases safely. A powerful hit from Ortiz gave Lopez just enough time to make it home safely from second
base to put the score at 3-0 for Cerritos. Flores kept the pressure going with a solid drive towards third, where a pair of errors saw Emma Wolff as well as Ortiz make it home safely to make it a 5-0 game for the Falcons. Next up for the Falcons, Carly Gutierrez, drives a hit between third and second base, making it to first base safely while Flores continued onto third. Tatyana Peko powered a hit to center field that looked like it was going to send Flores home but Gomez makes the stretch to get the third out for Rio. The bottom of the fifth saw Marissa Macias tagged out at first, Alicia Oliva’s fly ball caught by Flores, and Gomez unable to reach first after poor contact with the ball. The top of the sixth inning all but sealed the deal for the Falcons, with sophomore second baseman Brown hitting a two run home run to make it 7-0 for Cerritos. A picture perfect performance from Cerritos College’s pitcher, Voller, who shut out the Lady Roadrunners only allowing two hits while striking out five batters. Rio Hondo College will next travel to LA Harbor College Feb. 21 seeking redemption after failing to win their past two games, bringing their overall record to 3-4.
