President Elect Donald Trump has clinched the 2016 presidential election after a tight battle to the last minute with his opponent, Hillary Clinton. His victory marks the closest election since Bush v Gore, and like the 2000 elections, third party candidates played a key role in the outcome. While many democrats and independents are disappointed with the results, president Barack Obama expressed a heartfelt message to ease their concerns, “While progress isn’t guaranteed, each of us has the power to choose our path… and remember no matter what happens the sun will rise in the morning, and America will still be the greatest country on earth.” Trump will be the oldest first term president when he is sworn in as the 45th president of the United States Jan 20. Despite the fact that his campaign has repeatedly questioned the mental competency and health of Clinton, his age has been overshadowed by his peculiar campaign. Trump already has an itinerary for his first day as president, designated as the “First Day Project.” Trump intends to revoke over twenty-five of President Obama’s one hundred and ninety-five executive orders that most republicans perceive to be “unconstitutional executive orders,” according to “The New Yorker” writer Evan Osnos, that allegedly include the Paris climate change agreement, Obamacare, environmental regulations, and gun measures that many conservatives perceive as excessive. Based on his assertions during presidential debates and at rallies and conferences, Trump would also reinstate controversial forms of enhanced interrogation used by the CIA. He further plans to discontinue Obama’s Syrian Refugee Program under the pretense that refugees from Syria pose a danger to American security. The program has ushered ten thousand Syrians into the United States since Obama created the initiative last fall. The discontinuation is one of the first steps that Trump plans to take to handle terrorism and immigration. Trump plans to enact his immigration plan and start the projected $5 billion construction plan for his wall immediately after he is sworn in. He would do this by supporting the amendment of a federal financial regulation rule that would classify money transfer companies as financial institutions, which would ensure that “... no immigrant would be able to send money outside the United States unless they show documentation proving their legal status,” according to a “PolitiFact” report by Miriam Valverde. It has been confirmed by experts that Mexico receives $24 billion per year from people in the United States. While Trump claims that most of the money is from undocumented workers, it is debated by experts if that is true. Trump’s rationale is by freezing the revenue that Mexico gets from undocumented workers in America, the country will either suffer the monumental yearly loss of revenue or make a one time payment of $5-10 billion. Trump’s presidency will ensure the appointment of conservative justices open to overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, that established a constitutional right to abortion, and defending the 2010 Citizens United decision, which allowed business to donate political money as individuals and authorizes super PACs to raise a limitless amount of funds. Although he’s been dodgy on the controversial gay marriage ruling, several major gay rights advocates, news outlets, and the Human Rights Campaign believe, based on past comments and positions, that Trump will also consider appointing judges that would challenge national gay marriage rights; which would be in line with the Republican Party policy. While the ascension of the Trump Presidency leaves much for concern and even more uncertainty, the country is undoubtedly entering a new political era, where the term “politics” will be redefined. Veteran’s Week Kicksoff at Rio Hondo College ZACHARY MEJIA Managing Editor

Rio Hondo College is celebrating Veterans Day with a week full of activities in the lower quad, adjacent to the Veteran Memorial from Nov. 7-10. The four day event is scheduled to have an array of activities, including a twenty-two push challenge that aims to promote awareness to veteran suicide, a free barbeque lunch on the first day, a rolling Wall of Courage with photos of veterans that attended Rio Hondo, a fundraiser for a veterans food bank hosted by the Veterans Club, a canned food drive and a Note of Thanks, where students write and post letter of gratitude on the Wall of Courage. The opening speaker and organizer of the week long celebration was Matthew Keel, president of the veterans club. He was followed by Teresa Dreyfuss, rio hondo college president; Mary Ann Pacheco, president of the board of trustees; JoAnna Schilling, interim vice president of academic affairs; and Don Mason, associate dean of academic affairs of public safety. Pacheco and Mason both highlighted veterans as a valuable minority that should be offered special resources when it comes to education. Mason spoke of the Veterans Resource Center as a fine tool to assist veterans and relatives of veterans in

succeeding their educational goals. Mason also encouraged student veterans to be active in the school community and voice any concerns or ideas. He referred Robert Diaz’s, former president of the veterans club, proposal to have a monument on campus dedicated to former service members as an example of veteran-community relations. Most of those in attendance had relatives in the military or were veterans themselves. The military members in the audience enthusiastically sounded off

when Mason called upon specific branches of the military. After the commemoration concluded, Mason took off his suit jacket and led the twenty-two push up challenge. The participants, most of them former military members, formed a circle around him and pushed out on his count. He had them do an extra three push ups for the prisoners of war, the missing in action and those killed in the line of duty. The push up challenge promotes awareness to the prevalent rate of suicide as a

result of untreated posttraumatic stress disorder in the veteran community. “Currently there are roughly 22 veterans who commit suicide a day,” according to a sign post at the event. “The main goal was to reach 22 million push ups nationwide. We have reached that goal but continue to push until 22 suicides a day turns into zero suicides a day.” The push up challenge will be occur every morning of the event at 11 a.m and will be posted on social media. After completing the challenge, Mason explained that he was asked to speak at the opening day because of an article he coauthored with Ygnacio Flores and Tracy Rickman, two other administrators and veterans, titled “Community Colleges: Serving Those that Served.” Their article highlighted the services that colleges have to offer veterans. “We as a campus community need to embrace, assist and provide the resources veterans need when they return from active duty,” said Mason. Wells Fargo Will Pay $50 Million in Settlement to Homeowners CRYSTIAN MENDOZA Sports Editor

After already having their reputation tainted for scamming their customers and creating fake bank accounts to drive up their share value, Wells Fargo will now be paying out $50 million to settle a class-action lawsuit which accuses the bank of overcharging hundreds of thousands of homeowners, reports the New York Times. The settlement orders Wells Fargo to automatically mail out checks to over 250,000 affected customers nationwide who happened to have their home loans serviced by the bank between 2005 and 2010. Each check will total $120, according to Roland Tellis, a lawyer from Baron & Budd which is the law firm that represents Wells Fargo customers. The checks will not be disbursed until a judge signs off on the settlement, but the checks are expected to be distributed within the next year or so. Typically what happens when a borrower falls behind on their loan is that mortgage contracts usually let the lender order an appraisal of the home’s current value. The cost of that appraisal is known as broker fee which can then be passed on to the borrower.

Yet, Wells Fargo used one of their own subsidiaries to conduct those appraisals, which saw them routinely mark up the cost, as stated by the law suit. Ultimately, homeowners who used Wells Fargo’s service were charged anywhere from $90-$120 for a basic service that cost the bank less than $50. Aside from overcharging their customers, Wells fargo listed the charges in their statements with vague wording such as “other charges.” “People who are behind on their loans are the people

who can least afford to be charged marked-up fees, but unfortunately, that’s what happened,” said Mr. Tellis. Even after several homeowners filed a lawsuit against Wells Fargo in a Northern Carolina federal court in 2012, it was only last year that a judge granted class-action status to a portion of the claims related to the mark up charges. Wells Fargo simply agreed to settle the case in order to prevent further investigation into the manner and not admit to any wrongdoing.

Wells Fargo profited $5.6 billion last quarter, but their success isn’t preventing the questions raised by the scandal of their unethical sales practices. After recently being discovered for creating over two million fake bank and credit card accounts, Wells Fargo remains under fire with now another scandal coming to light as the bank is choosing to settle the class-action lawsuit. Frustrated customers went as far as to completely switch bank accounts in protest, while lawmakers and

prosecutors are left to deal with the legal catastrophe caused by the bank. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who heavily criticized Wells Fargo’s practices after their previous scandal, feels skeptical of the bank’s independent auditor, KPMG. Warren along with a few of her colleagues feel that the accounting firm’s failure to realize the the bank’s illegal activities “raises questions about the quality of your audits,” as stated in a letter they mailed to KPMG’s chief executive. As a result of Wells fargo’s fake bank account scandal and now following the marked-up charges on loans, the bank could lose up to $99 billion in deposits as well as $4 billion in revenue over the next year according to an estimate from the CG42 advisory firm. The company surveyed 1,000 Wells Fargo customers following the scandals, and found that 14 percent of them decided to switch to another bank entirely. The new Wells Fargo chief executive, Timothy J. Sloan has acknowledged that the bank has a lot of work to do in order to restore their reputation. “We’re prepared for things to get worse before they get better,” said Mr. Sloan to analysts in a conference call last month.

White Nationalists Plan Show of Force On Election Day XAVIER ALATORRE News Editor

White nationalists plan a “show of force” to monitor polls throughout the country on Election Day, according to Politico.com. Andrew Anglin, a Neo-Nazi leader, has shared plans to set up cameras and hand out drugs and alcohol in city ghettos, drawing on stereotypes to suppress minority voter turnout. Along with his partners in the “alt-right” website “The Right Stuff,” the support of other nationalist movements such as the American Freedom Party, and various groups comprised of armed individuals, state that they are will conduct “intelligence-gathering” at polling places that are in predominantly minority areas and have historically voted Democrat. The “call-to-action” is not surprising. Throughout his campaign, Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, has been telling his supporters to monitor polls. “Voter fraud is all too common,” Trump told a crowd Oct. 18. “But take a look at Philadelphia, what’s been going on, take a look at Chicago, take a look at St. Louis. Take a look at some of these cities, where you see things happening that are horrendous,” he

The rancor has created an undercurrent of fear and violence. The plans put forth by the “alt-right” and white nationalists underscores those fears and increases the possibility of violence at polling places. Leaders of the “alt-right” have claimed that they are monitoring polls to discourage voter fraud. “We are organizing poll watchers in urban areas to cut down on the most traditional type of

voter fraud. We also will have stationary cameras hidden at polling locations in Philadelphia, to monitor anyone that comes in to vote and make sure that the same people are not voting at multiple locations,” a representative of The Right Stuff told Politico in an email. The United States has not experienced the widespread voter fraud that the “altright” is claiming. In this election season alone, there has only been one case of duplicate voting, the voter fraud the “alt-right” wants to monitor.

In Iowa, Terri Lynn Rote, a 55 year-old Trump supporter attempted to vote twice in support of the Republican candidate. She cast one ballot in Polk County, Iowa and a second ballot in Des Moines. Despite Rote’s case, in-person voter fraud in support of either of the two major parties is still extremely rare. It’s the first time in 12 years that Polk County Auditor Jamie Fitzgerald can remember ever having to report potential voter fraud, he said to the Des Moines register. Members of the “alt-

The Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence are “confident” that the Russian government was behind the email hacks and leaks in an attempt to undermine the U.S. presidential election, reports the Los Angeles Times. However, FBI Director James Comey privately said that he believes Russia is behind the attacks but said it is too close to Election Day for the US to be naming Russia as trying to sabotage the election, according to CNBC. In a joint statement released Oct. 7, the agencies said “the U.S. intelligence community is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of emails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations.” The statement also included that “these thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the U.S. election process.”

Justice Department Sues AT&T Alleged Collusion With DirecTV ADAM CALLEJA Reporter

The Department of Justice has sued AT&T and it’s satellite television service DirecTV for unlawfully colluding with competitors Cox and Charter communications about carrying SportsNet LA, a Los Angeles Dodgers owned television channel. The Los Angeles Times reports, in the DOJ’s lawsuit filed in the US District Courts for the central districts of California, the Department alleges that DirecTV in 2014, before it was purchased by AT&T in 2014 and approved last year, unlawfully shared competitively sensitive information with AT&T, Cox and Charter during those companies’ negotiations with SportsNet LA, which has the exclusive rights to nearly all the Dodger telecasts in the LA area. The companies shared information about their plans of whether to carry the channel The Department of Justice said in the complaint, “To obtain bargaining leverage, DirecTV was the ring leader in the sharing of information that became a material factor in the company’s decisions not to carry the

Dodger fans were denied a fair competitive process when DirecTV orchestrated a series of information exchanges with the direct competitors that ultimately make consumers less likely be able to watch their hometown team.” Time Warner cable,

acquired in 2015 by Charter, paid the Dodgers 8.35 million dollars in 2013 for the rights to games for 25 years. When SportsNet LA launched in 2014, many satellite and cable providers looked at what they considered high fees to carry the channel. The sharing of information made it less likely that any of these companies would reach a deal because each

knew the competition was unlikely to begin carrying the channel. The complaint also states, “Should DirecTV especially decide to carry SportsNet LA, the other companies would feel forced too in order to prevent subscriber defections.” AT&T general counsel David McAtee said, “The company sees the fact differently,” in a statement

released after the DOJ complaint was announced.” McAtee also claimed “The reason why no other major television providers chose to carry this content was that no one wanted to force all of their customers to pay the inflated prices that Time Warner Cable was demanding for a channel devoted solely to Los Angeles Dodgers baseball. We make our carriage decisions independently. We look forward to presenting these facts in court.” The case complicates issues for AT&T, which two weeks ago announced its 84.3 million dollar bid for Time Warner. Time Warner includes CNN, Warner Bros, Studio and HBO. “Since that deal will require the approval of the Department of Justice, AT&T will likely settle this suit.” says Phil Swan, president of tvpredictions.com, “There is no way that AT&T will allow the Justice Department attorneys to begin merger consideration with this lawsuit pending.” The good news for baseball fans, this settlement could possibly include SportsNetLA on DirecTV and AT&T’s U-Verse next season.

50 Million Cracks Still Not Enough To Shatter Glass Ceiling XAVIER ALATORRE News Editor

History was almost made once again. Hillary Rodham Clinton has conceded the 2016 Presidential Election and will not be the first woman to hold the nation’s highest office. Hillary Clinton has come the closest any woman ever has to the nation’s highest office. Her nomination to a major party comes 97 years after women secured the right to vote, and eight years after the country elected its first Black president. Clinton and her campaign were prepared to celebrate underneath the literal glass ceiling of the Jacob Javits Center in New York City; a symbolic nod to the glass ceiling that has kept women from attaining power throughout the country’s history. However, a somber mood took over the convention center as the results trickled in. The defeat of Hillary Clinton follows a hard-fought primary race against her Democratic rival, Bernie

Sanders, and a tough General Election campaign against the Republican nominee, Donald Trump. Both gentlemen appealed to populist sentiments in their respective parties. Clinton stayed true to her centrist ideals and attempted to rally a coalition of voters to her candidacy. Campaigning on her behalf, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama attempted to tap into the coalition that elected the nation’s first black president. The election of Donald Trump is a referendum on Obama’s legacy as president as well as the Clinton legacy in US politics. After conceding to Barack Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary, Clinton told her supporters “Although we weren’t able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it’s got about 18 million cracks in it.” Before the election was called, Clinton had won over 50 million votes – a milestone in its own right. Unfortunately, the strong support was not

enough to turn the tide in several key swing states. Despite her heavy presence in the swing states, Clinton lost in Florida, Ohio, two states President Obama won in 2008 and 2012. Hillary Clinton spent $82 million more than Donald Trump in the two states, according to ABC News back in August. Along with gaining the White House, Republicans maintained control of the House of Representatives. Meanwhile, control of the Senate remained unclear late into the evening. The rancor of the election was at a new peak for American politics. It reached a fever pitch during the debates in October. Considering the vitriol and invective that has been injected into political discourse, the country will have to dig deep to heal after such a contentious election. For those that were “With Her,” it is time to move beyond the election. For President-Elect Donald Trump, it is time to govern.

From Networking to Gaming: Gameroom ANDREW RUDIN Science and Technology Editor

Facebook has made an attempt into the pc gaming market, challenging distributors like Valve’s Steam client. Facebook announced its desktop app Gameroom, which brings Facebook users into a gaming experience outside of their browser. Facebook initially announced a platform for their games in August of 2016 in partnership with Unity developer toolset. Gameroom is a gaming platform designed to centralize video games as Steam does. Valve’s Steam platform brings in hardcore gamers with 125 million active users daily. Facebook has over a billion users on their platform and therefore expect to hit a niche audience within their user base. However, Gameroom will begin hosting games up to 200MB which is not much considering the standard for most popular games range from 1GB to 50GB. Having said that, Facebook games haven’t been memory intensive with games such

Facebook has stated that they will “consider hosting games up to 500MB on a case-by-case basis.” Gameroom will have games dedicated for this platform from Facebook and other gaming developers. port games made directly for the Gameroom starting next year. This step seems to be aimed directly to casual gamers such as the user base of Candy Crush, who will open the app every once in awhile to kill time. These type of gamers don’t want

to dedicate many hours to more hardcore game such as Counter-Strike or League of Legends. The choice to leave a game at anytime is a facet of casual gaming that separates them from more hardcore gaming. A new casual gaming platform has potential as

most other platforms such as Steam and Origin are more dedicated to hardcore gamers. The niche of casual pc gaming is somewhat void as it is left to flash style games. As more games are released, a more definitive picture will show where Gameroom stands.

Uber: The Quicker Picker Upper ANDREW RUDIN Science and Technology Editor

Uber has just announced that it will make their app more intuitive for both the rider and driver experience. Uber made a post on their website November 2 outlining their new features and explained their reasoning behind them. The hope is that they make the app less cluttered and aesthetically simple. Back in 2012, their app simply gave you two options to ride, UberX and UberXL. Now the app features a couple more riding options, the ability to select a pickup location, schedule rides, what each ride costs and much more. The app has grown from its simple design to now accommodate riders in many situations, but has cluttered the experience. “We felt like we were being crushed by feature development,” Uber’s senior product manager Yuhki Yamashita said. “We’re literally running out of space.” Uber now categorizes their ride types under Economy and Luxury. Economy contains UberPOOL and UberX and Luxury houses Uber Select and Uber Black. Uber also wants to ease

the pickup process by suggesting common places for pickup in your area. This simplifies the stress of trying to find your driver as well as ease for the driver to find its rider. If a rider is heading to a person in particular rather than a place, the app will allow you to type their name instead of an address. The app will update with their lo-

cation and the driver will be able to find them much faster. This is done by syncing the app with your contacts. The person of interest in which the rider is heading towards will get a text asking to confirm their location for Uber. For privacy reasons, Uber will make this request every time a rider wants to meetup with a friend. Uber has also integrated

an estimate for both time and cost of a ride. Through their own research, Uber has concluded that knowing the time and cost beforehand showed that riders would ride again with this information available to them. Shortcuts are now being introduced to the app. Shortcuts predicts your next destination based on a rider’s past destinations. Uber would like

League of Legends 2017 ANDREW RUDIN Science and Technology

Technology advances rapidly in nature. A mere two years can drastically change the conditions of living. Computers see this change the most. A consequence of this is the impact on video games. Video games are constantly being outdated due to how frequent technology improves. However, League of Legends manages to stay relevant due to their developers Riot Games. League of Legends is an online player vs player type game based on the MOBA genre. MOBA stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. This style of game pits a set amount of players against each other in a team like structure. League of Legends pits two teams of five against

each other. This concept is not new to gaming, but it did not dominate the market of gaming as much as it does today. Riot Games is constantly updating League of Legends in order to balance the characters in the game in order to create a fair playing experience for every player. This season, however, boasts many features that help improve players who are dedicated enough to self-improvement. They also set each year apart with seasons in which players can participate in competitive ranks for rewards at the end of each season. After each season, Riot implements major changes in order to keep the game fresh. In line with this philosophy, Riot is introducing their

next set of major changes to League of Legends in hopes to promote the game. The first of these changes is in the Ranked System that Riot currently has in place. In previous iterations of the Ranked System, Riot promoted a solo experience in which a player could compete for a rank ranging from Bronze to Diamond. As this system improved, Riot introduced ways to partner up with one friend in this battle and eventually a way to team up with 4 other friends or players in order to place highly in this laddered system. The Ranked System in the 2016 season has removed this solo and duo system in favor of this team environment called Dynamic Queue. This game mode promot-

ed any amount of players to be able to queue up together for a more fun competitive experience. However, this left a sour taste in the League of Legends community. Most players see Ranked as a way to prove their skills to themselves and to those who were curious enough to find out. League of Legends is a game that takes game knowledge and individual skill to become a good player. By this logic, what better way to prove this than by solo queue. That is why Riot has brought this system back for the 2017 season, but with a twist. Riot has not done away with Dynamic Queue because fun with friends is an ideal that they promote quite highly. Therefore, Riot is making a separate ladder for the solo/ duo experience while Dynamic Queue is kept the same, but with a new name, Flex Queue. Because Flex Queue will remain the same as Dynamic Queue, players can queue up solo or with friends up to 4. Players who get ranked in both solo/duo and in Flex Queue will receive bonus rewards versus if one were to only place in one system. At the highest level of ranked play, challenger, players may only solo queue as this tier was most negatively affected by the Dynamic Queue changes. Second on this list of changes is the addition of replays. This allows players to review and download games they have previously played. This system has been a feature for many competitive games for many years.

It is a wonder that Riot has taken so long to integrate such a simple feature to such a major game. Now that it is being added, players may now review and identify mistakes they have made in a clearer and more specific light. In line with replays, Riot is also introducing a practice mode. This is a representation of sandbox mode from other games in which a player can set any amount of parameters to themselves or their character in order to practice a specific skill. This is another feature Riot has neglected for many years, but has finally turned to accepting for the upcoming season. The most notable change to League of Legends is the client update. This is Riot’s attempt to modernize the player’s pregame experience. Players will have new visual interfaces when queueing up for games and setting up their characters. Players will also be able to change ingame settings from this new client. As with the previous features being added, these new client features have been showcased in other games, namely DOTA 2, League of Legends direct competitor. It must be said that these changes are a positive sign for all players of the game as they finally gain features that other big games have had for years. However, this pattern of neglecting this common functions in their game has only been a detriment to their games expansion. For now players can look forwards to these long awaited features as the 2017 season rolls around.

Parents’ Ages May Have an Impact on Children Development A child’s development can be effected by many things, but new studies have linked autism to parents’ age. According to new studies, kids born to parents with ages of 35 years or older have higher chances of autism. As reported by spectrumnews.org a large scale study was conducted by researches from Copehagen Centre for Social Evolution with 1.7 million children born during 1978 through 2009 in Denmark. It was found that 10,703 of the individuals were diagnosed with autism. The individuals were split depending on the parents’ ages and the time

of birth. The researcher then measured how autism cases varied with age. It was found that kids born to fathers with ages 35 to 60 had a 24 percent higher chance of having autism compared to those with fathers aged 31 to 34, while kids born to mothers aged 32 to 46 had a 34 percent higher chance of developing autism compared to those with mothers 29 to 31. While younger parents being at lower risk for having kids with autism they are not completely out of the woods as reported by nationportal. com. Children born to young parents are at risk for having schizophrenia, especially those with very young mothers, while those with older parents were not. It was also discovered

that the risk for children developing schizophrenia or autism could be added to if there were big age gaps between the parents. However researchers found it might be avoidable if there was a large enough gap between an older father and younger mother according to scienceworldreport.com. Despite the evidence that parents’ age can be a factor in a child developing autism it should be known that most children will develop normally as reported by The Huffington Post.

The ‘Laramie Project’ delineate’s heavy emotion JAKE LAURELL Reporter DIANA JUAREZ Copy Editor

The Laramie Project play premiered at the Wray Theater Nov. 3, running through Nov. 6, and did not hold back in stirring up emotions. It held up a mirror to our society, forcing the viewer to self-reflect. The play depicted the aftermath of the death of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student that was murdered in the small town of Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. An acting troupe from New York City wrote a screenplay after conducting 200 interviews with the townsfolk, friends, and loved ones of Shepard. The set aimed to transport the audience to Laramie and succeeded for the most part; every piece of wooden furniture felt authentic. You could feel the small town vibe from the worn out cracks on the wooden fence that were displayed. Both the good and the less-fortunate sides of what it would be like growing up in a town like this were showcased in this play. The TV screens used on set implemented various

images of the Fireside bar, a church, and sound effects that set the atmosphere right after the fallout of the murder. Scene changes felt seam-

An especially emotional scene in which Shepard’s father gives a heart wrenching speech expressing why he wishes life for his son to his son’s murderers. So many moments had you enthralled and engrossed in what was unfolding upon the stage, it wasn’t hard to imagine how much work the actors and crew put into the play with just the raw unfiltered emotion put into every scene. The play captured society as a whole, and put an unapologetic spotlight on it, whether we like it or not. It painted the story of a murder that happened 18 years ago, and showed that it could still have an impact on us today, considering how divided America is currently. Although we are doing better with the acceptance of the LGBT+ community, we still have a long way to go.

The event included various dance ensembles such as “Between Rose Petals and Water Studies” choreographed by Dr. Alyson Cart-

agena, Director of the Dance Program, “Haunted” choreographed by student David Bernal, “A Time to Build Up and Break Down” choreographed by Jose Limon, among others dances that allowed the audience to experience the various sounds and rhythms of music. Even though some choreographies could be seen as more interesting than others by the audience’s applause, every dance and every movement of students on stage

demonstrated to the audience a unique personality. Each dance expressed a different message through the use of varying choreographies and stage production arrangements. The effort of each student, the music, and the choreographies were well practiced and made the audience enjoy the dances from

the beginning to the end of the show. This dance concert was a fantastic opportunity to see different dance styles and to experience different emotions, feelings, among others. The production as much as the students did their part to give the best on stage.

‘Jackie’ is a meditation on death and legacy

“Jackie” opens in select theaters December 2, 2016

At one point in Pablo Larraín’s “Jackie,” the titular First Lady discusses funeral plans for her late husband, President John F. Kennedy, with Jack Valenti. She subtly usurps the procession plans for JFK’s casket as Valenti grows increasingly frustrated at the First Lady before asking why she insists on walking in the street with her husband’s casket. Jackie simply replies “I’m just doing my job.” Unlike any biopic I’ve ever seen, “Jackie” follows an experimental structure to better conceptualize Jackie Kennedy’s state of mind. How could that mindset be anything other than haphazard? A husband, father, President. The idea of JFK fulfilled a wide-spanning tapestry of the American dream. All Jackie wanted was to honor his memory. “Jackie” is an intimate film. The camera is constantly fixated with compressed space between the First Lady and the people she comes across in the week after JFK was assassinated in 1963. Use of ongoing close-ups leaves the unspooling narrative feeling raw and candid. Nothing is held back from us. Intercutting segments serve as unconventional bookends: one of the Life magazine interview a week after the assassination and another of a TV special during Jackie’s first year in the White House. Director Pablo Larraín uses these interconnecting bookends to exemplify the idea of how personas are established for what is essentially American royalty. We get a full grasp on the range of Jackie’s own persona. She was not the same person in front of the camera as she was in private. Natalie Portman’s performance is a triumph. Although she bears minimal resemblance, Portman naturally hums the dialect of Jackie Kennedy. Her presence is simultaneously radiant and ethereal as we witness the various faces worn by the First Lady to suit public and private needs. At first glance, Portman’s iteration of Jackie feels fragile in light of tragedy. Her voice breaks and she’s soft-spoken. Once Portman’s performance settles into the dialogue that we realize it’s another facade. Portman and the script use Jackie’s emotions as a distraction for one hand, her wit and quick thinking as weapons in another. It’s a magnificent balancing act accomplished by writer Noah Oppenheim, whose other main credits include “The Maze Runner” and “Allegiance.” There’s a grainy texture to the story of Jackie’s anguish and not just because it was shot on 16mm. Larraín utilizes the grain almost like a dreary fog, overwhelming every frame of the film. It’s not quite a fever dream as much as it is a living nightmare. Mica Levi’s score accentuates the grief filled narrative. At times the score sounds as if the haunting chords of Levi’s work in “Under the Skin” poured over. The music in “Under the Skin” transcends humanity, developing into a meditation on isolation and longing, whereas the music in “Jackie” follows suit and aggressively pushes forward the notion of identity and further loneliness. At time’s It’s uncomfortable to watch and listen to, almost as if the solemn nature of the film is too much to take in all at once. It’s a scarily accurate study on death and how one deals with loss. It also just happens to be about the aftermath of one of our nation’s greatest tragedies. Whether or not a biopic is “true to life,” what’s important is that everyone involved makes a good film first and foremost. Biographical films are often an easy shoehorn in for the upcoming award season. Larraín and company have created a legitimate masterwork. Any awards that come its way will be well deserved.

A standard Marvel movie with a hint of strange NOAH GARCIA Opinion Editor

“ “Doctor Strange” is, in itself, a strange character and choice for the next standalone Marvel/Disney superhero film. With audiences asking for a Black Widow movie and getting excited for other Marvel properties i.e. Black Panther, Spider Man Homecoming, etc. The choice to choose this character for a movie may seem odd at first. What Doctor strange does do is set up an entirely different world, introduces a major plot element that will be used in future films, and tries to successfully integrate magic into a heavily science based universe. The real challenge of this film is to accomplish all of this while having a strong plot, understandable world mechanics, and memorable characters. The plot is somewhat standard with the common tropes being made interesting by the characters and the settings. It’s a selfish person’s journey to redemption and the understanding that other

people matter besides himself. The villain is forgettable, given a tragic background but lacks any other interesting quality for the audience to care about him. The main villain of Doctor Strange and his company is a very basic, evil for the sake of evil, type of villain. This actually works well since the simplicity of him shows off the emotional development of the main character, which is really all he’s needed for. Benedict Cumberbatch portrays the main protago-

nist, Dr. Stephen Strange, a Brilliant neurosurgeon who turns to the mystical arts after going through a life changing incident. The character is established as an arrogant showboater who became a doctor purely because of the money and recognition. As expected, he learns to open his mind to new possibilities and realizes that he doesn’t know as much as he thought, he loses these negative traits for the most part. He’s accompanied by Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, the always faithful

love interest, and supporting characters Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton whom all serve their expositional/plot purposes well. Mads Mikkelsen plays the villain, Kaecilius, whom unfortunately continues the bad trend of Marvel villains: having an interesting concept and backstory but still being uninteresting. We do spend some time with the character and learn of his motives, but it’s set up to where you’re supposed to care because of the character’s circumstances and not

Closing out the fest were New Zealand comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, whom I’ve been wanting to see live for 10 years now. They were everything I was hoping they’d be; their chemistry on stage was so sweet and funny. When they sang “Bowie” I shed a few tears, and it was a very perfect end to such a great night. Other than the 23 acts the stages had to offer, there was a “Chill Zone” outdoors, complete with a retro arcade, space-themed rides, and a giant slide. There was also a Bowie face painting booth, with a huge line of people eager to honor the late icon by getting their faces painted like Ziggy Stardust. There were also food trucks outdoors, as well as full bars throughout the venue for the 21 and over crowd. One my favorite traveling food vendors, “Spicy Pie” pizza, was in attendance. “Spicy Pie” is only available at various festivals and events, and it’s so delicious that it’s worth listing as one of the highlights of my Festival Supreme experience. This was my third time attending Festival Supreme and it always feels more like a huge, happy costume party rather than a fest. I have strayed away from other festivals recently, for many anxiety-driven reasons, but I have been consistently

What makes the typical “Marvel movie” can really be described as having quick quirky character lines/beats, interesting clear visuals, good action scenes and a simple villain. Besides the directing, the visuals are fantastic. A bright complex carnival of lights and displayed by all of the magic in the film. Magic is generally explained as a high level of bodily energy that one can learn to understand and control. In this movie it is explained well enough, as our main character learns to use this ability to teleport, astral project, as well as defense. The film had a strong opening weekend, with an $84 million opening and a $325 million opening worldwide. “Doctor Strange” is a cornucopia of complex and stunning images with interesting world building and characters which pair well with the standard marvel movie formula.

Festival Supreme: Fun, comedy and pure entertainment MALISSA MYERS Online Editor-in-Chief

The 4th annual Festival Supreme took place October 29th at The Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles, with headliners Flight of the Conchords and Weird Al Yankovic, amongst many others. Jack Black and Kyle Gass, of the comedy duo Tenacious D, curate the huge comedy and music fest every year around Halloween time. Festival Supreme continues to draw in costume-clad crowds annually, and this year’s fest did not disappoint fans. Festival Supreme always has a different theme, and this year’s was “The Final Frontier”, a nod to everything otherworldly. Being that it took place on Halloween weekend, attendees were eager to dress up and show off their creativity. Costumes ranged from Star Wars’ tauntauns to an extraterrestrial Elvis Presley, to “Barf” from Spaceballs. It’s no surprise that comedy fans have the best costumes. Three stages were set up throughout The Shrine, all with fitting names. Inside were the Space Disco and Crab Nebula stages, and the largest, the Omega stage, was outdoors. The Space Disco stage hosted DJs such as Tenacious DJ and IHEARTCOMIX, which got the crowd dancing.

Weekly has dubbed Festival Supreme as “The Coachella of Comedy.” A great description in regards to the quality and variety of entertainment, but I’d like to dispel any negative connotations that go along with the comparison. At Festival Supreme you can always get a cold beer without waiting an hour and missing one of your favorite acts. You can travel from stage to stage without expending all of your energy, and still getting a good viewing spot. And one possibly underrated element of Festival Supreme is that there are plenty of bathrooms inside the Shrine! No porta-potties! Festival Supreme is eight hours of fun, comedy, music, food, and pure entertainment. If Tenacious D keeps putting out a great lineup every year, I will keep returning. Whenever I discuss Festival Supreme with people who have never heard of it, I always list it as one of the ‘Top Five Most Fun Things I’ve Ever Done in My Life.’ I can honestly say it is worth every penny of the $99.50 ticket price. In my opinion, all other festivals should strive to be a Festival Supreme.

Trump Supporters on Campus: Why He Has My Vote

As I write this article, the election hasn’t happened yet. We sit here with knots in our stomachs and a nervous energy that makes us restless about the results. Regardless of who your candidates are or what propositions and

proposals you’re voting on, this election has been nerve racking in the worst way possible. It has brought out the best and worst from either side of the aisle, straining relationships, and at times breaking them. Yet with all the heated arguments for and against candidates, many people feel like they can’t openly talk about their candidate for fear of being fired. Because as we all (should) know, freedom of speech only protects you legally, it doesn’t stop others from shunning you, or your boss from firing you for speaking your mind. California has consistently been a Democratic state for just over two decades, and in those two decades the citizens of California have become as deeply rooted in their liberal ways as the South is in their conservative ways. Can you imagine being a Republican in California that supports Trump?

Nightmare. No, the real nightmare is how harshly we judge each other for who we support in this election. People shouldn’t be afraid of losing their jobs for backing either candidate, yet that is what happened when I interviewed two people about the reasons behind their support for Donald Trump. Both people decided to remain anonymous out of fear of the fallout, so I will be calling them Sam and Taylor. I first spoke to Taylor and asked them what was Trump’s appeal to them. “He lies, but not like the other [politicians] do. He will get past the political correctness. If nothing else, Trump won’t do worse than George W. Bush,” said Taylor. “I’m voting for him because he’s obnoxious, he will shake things up. I’m not scared of the world ending if Trump wins, and neither should you.” I asked Sam the same

“Everything is possible in this life as long as you work hard to achieve” President Barack Obama announced last week that people should go to the red planet not just to visit the surface but also, to live for a longer period of time. “These missions will teach us how humans can live far from Earth -something we will need for the long journey to Mars,” Obama stated.

The government, associated with some private companies, are working together in order to accomplish this goal. Their goal being first people to Mars orbit by the mid-2030s. For many who are passionate to know a little bit more about the space, now the president is giving the opportunity not only to astronauts, but also to all people who would like to go and make a new life on the red planet.

Obama along with private companies hope everything goes well in order to make possible a new generation out the Earth planet. There are some groups of people that are being trained for this great journey and the only thing necessary for people interested in part of this journey must apply to The astronaut selection program. In this program, the requirements include, being intelligent, creative, psychologically stable and physically

With such a passionate answer from Sam, I asked if there was anything in Trump’s policies that they disagree with. “No. I believe that the

policies that Trump is wanting to implement are to help rebuild a strong foundation. We have lost track of what is important in the US due to political correctness,” said Sam. Meanwhile, Taylor hit me with a very surprising answer.“There are many things I don’t agree on. I’m only voting for him for entertainment because the government is miserably broken. Both parties hate each other, I think this would be a great wake up call.” Imagine feeling so trapped by a system that’s constantly putting the wellbeing of it’s country in jeopardy that the only way to wake up the politicians is by supporting a man that, as Taylor described, is “certifiably insane.” For now, we’ll sit here wondering what the state of the nation will be when this is all over, and hope that it’s not a nightmare.

One person can change the world, or at least the clear up any confusion. Ever had a question in class but were too afraid to ask it? Then that another person raises their hand and has the exact same question, but actually decided to get an answer. It cleared up your confusion as well, right? Your question could be one that 100 other students are just too afraid to ask but definitely need an answer to. Then, once given that answer it could change that person’s whole perspective on a certain subject in a positive way. Everyone has questions, whether it be about relationships, school, or beauty tips. Cant wait to hear from you all! - V Is there a line between helping a friend and being nosey? This is a tough one because if you see a friend dealing with something you know you can help with you automatically want to help them. However, when someone is ready to open up about what they are dealing with they will. Whenever a situation becomes unbearable for a person they will let you know and ask for advice. The only time i believe being nosey is acceptable is when you know a friend is being harmed in any kind of way. If the person you know is putting their life in danger i believe that line can be crossed because you can’t just let the situation go unnoticed. So in conclusion, if you’re friend wants your advice they will ask. If they are putting themselves in harms way and may just be afraid to open up talk to them calmly and tell them you are there if they need you. -Your friend Vee

How do I get over the fear of failing? Well, first make sure you remind yourself that everyone fears failure. No one wants to fail at anything they’re doing, it’s not the best feeling. Now, take a moment to imagine yourself in a situation you’re afraid to fail in, and allow yourself to fail(This is only visualization, relax.) Alright so you feel yourself failing right? Doesn’t feel too good? Now imagine all the ways to get around this situation so you can succeed. Success always feels better than failure but you have to do everything in your absolute power to see yourself succeeding. Its all a mind game: if you believe your going to fail, chances are you will because you’ve put yourself in that mind frame. But start seeing yourself succeeding, and start thinking of all the ways you can then you must begin to do everything in your power to make it happen because you now have so many routes to take. Its also important to remember failure is apart of learning. I know we hate to hear that but take a second to remember the times you may have failed, then think about what you learned from that failure. I guarantee you won’t make the same mistake twice, and the next time you find yourself in the situation you failed i promise you know exactly what to do and you do it even better because you know how to approach it. -Your friend Vee

Rio Hondo College women’s soccer team tie ELAC 2-2 and dominate PCC 7-2 CRYSTIAN MENDOZA Sports Editor

The Rio Hondo College women’s soccer team started off their week with a home game against East Los Angeles College Nov. 1 in a game that would see both sides walk away with a point, as they tied 1-1 on the evening. The draw saw the Lady Roadrunners overall record now go to 11-1-4 while putting them in a 2-0-3 position in conference. The game started off evenly matched, but it was the East Los Angeles College Huskies who managed to score the opener early on in the eighth minute of the game. Colleen Tamashiro opened up the scoring for ELAC, with Kremlin Perez getting the assist. The Huskies were then able to hold off the Lady Roadrunners all the way into half-time. When the second half started, Rio Hondo picked up the momentum of the game and began driving at the goal with every opportunity that they had. With roughly 25 minutes left to go in the half, Emma Contreras of Rio Hondo took it upon herself to drive the ball forward past a few defenders leaving her with an open shot against the defenseless ELAC goalkeeper, which she then put into the back of the net tying the game at 1-1. The game ended in a draw and after losing to Cerritos College the previous game, it was definitely not a result Rio Hondo wanted but it was better than a loss. The Lady Roadrunners now

had to travel to Pasadena City College Nov. 4 to face the Lancers in yet another South Coast Conference matchup. After a loss and a tie, Rio Hondo came into this game with no other option but to go all out for the win against the Pasadena City College Lancers. The Lady Roadrunners did just that, and dominated the game winning 7-2 with five different players getting on the scoreboard for Rio Hondo on the evening. Emma Contreras scored the opener in the 20th minute after an assist from Daisy Gallegos, and it only took another six minutes for Samantha Garcia to give Rio Hondo the second goal of the match. With the score now at 2-0, the Lady Roadrunners sat in a comfortable position as they continued to dominate their Lancer opponents. Another nine minutes after scoring the second goal of the game, Rio Hondo got a third goal when Erika Lizarraga lobbed the goalkeeper from 20 yards out. With the score now at 3-0 in the 32nd minute, Garcia managed to get on the scoreboard again, scoring a roller from about ten yards out in the 35th minute. In the 40th minute Pasadena City College finally scored a goal of their own, with Alexis Acosta scoring a driven shot from the top of the box after a throw in assist from Isabel Diaz, ending the half at 4-1 in Rio Hondo’s favor. As the second half com-

menced, it only took three minutes for Rio to score their fifth goal of the evening, with Gallegos scoring her second goal in the 48th minute. Shortly after, Pasadena City managed to get another consolation goa,l with Diaz scoring a bullet from the top of the box after a Toni Dwyer assist. The score remained the same for the next forty minutes as Rio Hondo chose to slow down the tempo of the game leaving their opponents to chase the ball around for a majority of the remaining game time. Finally in the 89th minute Lizarraga carried the ball up the middle of the field after an assist from Contreras that saw her score her second goal of the match. With the score now at 6-2, it seemed that the game was all but over for Pasadena City College as they were dominated by the Lady Roadrunners. Yet, a free kick opportunity in the 90th minute stoppage time gave Gracie Lopez the chance to score a goal herself, and she did placing a shot that bounced past the keeper from 30-yards out. Rio Hondo won the game 7-2 against Pasadena City College that improved their overall record to 11-1-5 and brought their conference record to 3-0-3. The Lady Roadrunners will next face Mt. San Antonio College Nov. 8 and will close out the South Coast Conference with an away game against Chaffey College Nov. 11 before the start of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

Rams offensive woes continue against a physical Panthers side, losing 13-10 CAIN HERNANDEZ Reporter

Los Angeles- Once again, the Los Angeles Rams’ offense disappoints in 2016. Chants of “We Want Goff” echoed through the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Rams fans are starting to get very impatient with starting quarterback Case Keenum who led the Los Angeles to 339 yards of offense with 296 of those yards were through the air. The Panthers held the Rams to nine scoreless drives before the struggling offense was able to put a point on the scoreboard. The game could have ended very different if the Rams tight end, Lance Kendricks, caught a wide open pass in the endzone. The pass from Keenum hit Kendricks in the chest as the ball bounced off his body. Los

Angeles then had to settle for three more points from a Field Goal that would come from Greg Zuerlein. The stingy Carolina defense still held strong not allowing the Rams to gain any momentum. NFL MVP Cam Newton went 20 for 32 with 225 yards and a touchdown in the game. After stating he does not feel safe anymore after last weeks win over the Cardinals, Newton protected himself well by staying in the pocket and letting the big hogs upfront protect him as he made plays with his arm. The Rams defense did their job the whole game, applying pressure to Newton and getting the ball back to Keenum. Unfortunately, the offense couldn’t pick up the slack. Goff to take his first snap. After All, the Rams did trade the world to select him in the Draft. Is Goff not ready to play? It seems like it. Keenum is playing at a sub par level. If Goff was better he would be playing right now. For the Rams, Keenum is the best option at quarterback for now if Goff is not ready to take over as QB1 for Los Angeles. Some wonder if third string quarterback Sean Mannion is better than Goff. The pressure on Ram’s head coach Jeff Fischer is enormous right now. Does he make the switch to Goff now and hope he sparks the Ram offense? Or does he keep Keenum under center? Did the Rams blow the pick by not selecting Carson Wentz over Jared Goff? It is too early to tell. Jared Goff needs his chance to show what he can do.

Roadrunners sit in 3rd place in the South Coast Conference, with overall record of 9-2-8 VICTOR LOZANO Reporter

Coming off a strong week where the Rio Hondo men’s soccer team finished up the last of their inter-conference games against Los Angeles Harbor College and Cerritos College winning 2-0 and 3-0 respectively, the Roadrunners came home for a game to face East Los Angeles College Nov. 1. After previously meeting Sep. 30 where Rio Hondo came up on top 1-0 after a late goal in the 88th minute from Angel

Flores, the Roadrunners had an opportunity to sweep the season series and gain an advantage in the South Coast Conference. While the majority of the game was played tightly, the Roadrunners managed to strike first in the 20th minute when Nicholas Knapp setup Jesus Garcia in the box to give Rio an early 1-0 lead in the first half. While Rio carried most of the momentum in the first 45 minutes, it was ELAC who would dominate the second half, scoring in the 50th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Completely in control,

ELAC would score again in the 63rd minute to go up 2-1 and looked as if Rio Hondo would suffer their first loss since Sep. 23. The Roadrunners managed to rally back into the game with Andrew Gomez delivering in the 80th minute with a goal to tie the game at 2-2 and end what was a physical matchup between the two teams. Trying to finish up the week on a win, Rio then travelled to Pasadena City College Nov. 4 to face the Lancers in their last meeting of the year after previously tying 1-1 in their first

game. Pasadena started off strong with two goals in the 16th and the 35th minute of the first half to give them a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Faced with adversity as they have this whole season, Rio would respond back in the second half with two goals of their own to tie the game at 2-2. It started with Angel Flores scoring at the 50 minute mark from an assist from Antonio Villegas to give the Roadrunners their first goal and cut the lead to 2-1. With time winding down

and potentially losing the game, a corner kick from Flores would set up Alex Saenz with a header for a goal at the 87th minute to tie the game and finish in a draw. The two games still left Rio Hondo undefeated, but with the pair of draws saw their record go to 9-2-8 and are currently third place in the conference. The Roadrunners will finish up the regular season with games against the first place Mt. San Antonio College at home Nov. 8 and they will play their final game away from home against Chaffey College Nov. 11.

Chicago Cubs finally win a World Series after 108 years, beating the Cleveland Indians XAVIER ALATORRE News Editor

108 years ago, women were not allowed to vote. Today, women are allowed to vote and some Americans will vote for the first female president. 108 years ago, Ford released the Model T, the country’s first affordable automobile. Today, the Interstate Highway system dominates ground travel in the United States thanks to the automobile. In the last 108 years, the country has plunged into two World Wars and a Great Depression. It has combated, and witnessed the fall of, communism. Humankind has achieved flight and set foot on the moon. A lot of modern history occurred in that span. 108 years is how long it took for the Chicago Cubs to win a World Series title. The Chicago Cubs, baseball’s lovable losers, were the heavy favorites to win the Fall Classic but their victory was not an easy path. The 162-game season was their first hurdle. The club finished the season with the

best record in baseball, 103 wins against 58 losses. Chicago then had to survive the gauntlet that is October baseball. First they had to fend off the San Francisco Giants and their Even Year magic in the NLDS, then the Los Angeles Dodgers and the perennially great Clayton Kershaw in the NLCS, and finally the Cleveland Indians — a team and a city that has been starving for a World Series title. The Series opened in Cleveland. The Indians took the first game in dominating fashion, blanking the Cubs 6–0. Game 2 saw the Cubs equally as dominant. They tied the series with a 5–1 win. But then the wheels fell off for the Cubbies. Cleveland took two more games. They were poised to win the Series and their first title since 1948. The last time a team lost a World Series after leading 3–1 was in 1985 when the Kansas City Royals roared back to snatch the championship from the St. Louis

Cardinals. The Indians only needed one more win. The Cubs needed a miracle — three straight wins. History and probability were not in the Cubs favor. The Cubs held a tenuous lead, 3–2, in Game 5, extending their season and their postseason hopes. The Cubs renewed their fans’ faith in Game 6, defeating the Indians 9–3 and forcing Cleveland to a Game 7. Game 7 was the most watched baseball game since final game of the 1991 World Series, according to Fox Sports. An average of 40.09 million viewers tuned in to watch history in the making. The first inning did not hesitate in delivering the drama. In the game’s first at bat, Dexter Fowler launched a homer to dead center off of Corey Kluber. However, it appeared to be a quiet game, even after the Indians tied the match up in the third inning. Cubs ace Kyle Hendricks gave up a double to Coco Crisp. Crisp advanced to second on a

sacrifice bunt by Roberto Perez. Carlos Santana singled to right, driving in Crisp for the tying run. The Cubs opened their lead in the fourth and fifth innings. They cruised through three more innings with a 6–1 lead, destiny all but assured. But Baseball is a fickle lover. She will send you on highs that ride waves, cresting to immense peaks only to land in a thunderous crash, leaving you disoriented and questioning why you watch the damn sport in the first place. Such was the case for the Cubs and their fans. Chicago let their lead slip in the bottom of the eighth. Aroldis Chapman, the unhittable flamethrower whose fastball tops out at 105 miles per hour, gave up a two-run home run to Rajai Davis. The game remained tied through the ninth inning. Before heading into extra innings, the teams retreated to their dugouts because of a rain delay — the universe telling Chicago, “Noth-

ing is easy.” Entering the top of the tenth inning, the Cubs scored two runs and took the lead on a double by Ben Zobrist and a single by Miguel Montero, two veteran ball players that have helped guide the young talent on Chicago’s roster. As fate would have it, Carl Edwards Jr., a rookie relief pitcher that was picked in the 48th round of 2011 draft, came in to pitch the biggest inning of his life. He was able to get two outs before Cubs Manager, Joe Maddon, brought in Mike Montgomery for the save. Facing Michael Martinez for the last out, Montgomery gave up a ground ball that dribbled to third baseman Kris Bryant. With a smile, Bryant fielded the ball and fired it to first baseman Anthony Rizzo for the final out, knowing the dreams of a city, and perhaps an entire sport, were finally realized 108 years later.
