After playing their first six games on the road, the Rio Hondo Lady’s volleyball team finally found themselves in a familiar setting on the first day of September. The Lady Roadrunners hosted the Fullerton Hornets in the gym at Rio Hondo, and only needed the first three sets to earn the victory. Rio Hondo’s Lady Roadrunner volleyball team hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts. They lost five of their first six prior to Friday night’s matchup with Fullerton. As previously mentioned, however, those first six games were all away games. It was not a surprise to see the Lady Roadrunners come out of the gates blazing
Rio Hondo College strikes again by receiving a 778,000 dollar grant to develop new safety standards for alternative fuels. The National Science Foundation grant has been dedicated to developing safety standards for the technicians who work with the vehicles in the Alternative Fueling Technology program. The grant had been developed by Rio Hondo’s Professor John Frala, Coordinator of Alternative Fuels/ Electric/Fuel Cell Vehicles and was assisted by Central Oregon Community College. “The grant process is a competitive grant with entries from all 50 states” says Frala. After a long year, the grant had been developed. Now that Central Oregon Community College and Rio Hondo are collaborating with one another, they are now “developing High-Voltage safety standards for the transportation industry” says Frala, “these will become an industry wide standard.” As far as any upcoming collaborations go, there are two other grants for the Alternative Fueling Technology program in the making and a course for the BS program for alternative fuels education. This program offers special training for current and future students to help them get further into the industry with proper training and certification. Being that alternative vehicles are expanding in the markets, Rio Hondo’s technicians are being provided with a great amount of service by being certified and trained in a new and more sophisticated, safe work environment.

U.S. Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez Attends
RHC: Brown Bag Lunch Discussion

Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez joined Rio Hondo students for lunch today to discuss legislative updates and to address concerns from the students. These concerns included the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), affordable college, and the Affordable Care Act. Once open for discussion the topic of DACA came up immediately. DACA provides immigrant child that grew up in this country higher education. Congresswoman Sanchez explained to the students that DACA has an expiration date and if President Trump does not act on the bill it will be eliminated. She then stated what students can do to fight the elimination by applying pressure for those in the house and senate to support the bill. However, Congresswoman Sanchez reminded students that even with the support, the bill will still fall in the hands of President Trump to either pass or veto the bill. The issue of budget cuts with concern towards education was another concern of the students. Majority of students just within the room rely on federal aid for education as noted when asked how many do. Congresswoman Sanchez was unable to give a conclusion on how budget cuts will affect education, but she told students that the president will cut the budget in education, but it is Congress that

revenue from. Due to the circumstances of the bill and the ways it is being presented, has of now killed the bill. The Brown Bag Lunch created a space for college students to meet with and discuss issues with congresswoman Linda Sanchez. From her background students realized her story was not too different from their own.
Her parents were immigrants that came to this country to provide for a better life for her and her six other siblings. Among this, Sanchez faced many barriers and obstacles in her life that could of let her down but here she is today as the first Latina in the U.S. Congress.
Hurricane Harvey Decimation of Texas MALENA LOPEZ Staff Writer
Hurricane Harvey, the biggest flood disaster in U.S. history has taken over Houston Texas with a category four hurricane. There have been reports of 40-50 inches of rain flooding homes and highways with constant rainfall. Multiple flash flood warnings have led over 30,000 people into shelters while the flood lingers. This crisis has left thousands of people to evacuate the city, leaving all belongings behind with another thousand trapped in their flooded homes or in the storm. Houston police have dispatched officers on boats
to go on multiple rescue missions bringing over 2,000 people to safety. The Houston police department is sending out messages via social media asking for people who are trapped in their homes to put out a blanket or towel, some place visible for the rescue team to see. There has also been a major issue with pet owners leaving their pets behind who either stay in fear of not knowing what to do or die. Unfortunately Texas officials did note that as of Monday afternoon there have been 39 human deaths reported, one being a police officer who went on a rescue mission. The owners never came
back, and over 15,000 deaths for pets who were abandoned, for the most part, caused by drowning. The American Red Cross were the first responders and were able to provide shelter, blankets, water and food. Luckily other people and chains are providing as much help as possible as well. Churches, gymnasiums, including mattress store owner Jim Mclngvale, are reaching out providing shelter and food for those in need. Mclngvale is the owner of Houston’s largest furniture store, Gallery Furniture Grand Parkway, who was able to shelter thousands of people. Mclngvale was using social media to notify people when more space would open
up for those in need. The addresses to these current shelters are being shared on social media and are asking that the public continues to repost this information. As of now Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, Mexican Consul General in Austin, has been in contact with Texas Governor Greg Abbott to determine how Mexico can assist. Carlos Sada, Mexican Ambassador, says he and his country are prepared to offer relief that includes troops, convoys, food, water, medicine and portable showers. Mexico stays standing by waiting for further instructions from Governor Abbott. Due to rumors of documentation being checked
when trying to evacuate the city, Ambassador Sada advised for the people of Texas to not be afraid to come out, for they were advised by Governor Abbott that there will not be a deportation operation. As of Friday morning the rainfall has stopped, leaving thousands not knowing what to do next. There have been several questions from the public asking how one can contribute to help and if possible, where can a donation be made. Donations are gladly being accepted to the United Way Flood Relief Fund, to the American Red Cross and donations to the Salvation Army.

DACA Program Continued spoke on the current status of those already in the program: “No new initial requests or associated applications filed after today will be acted on.” The Trump Administration did, however, announce the continuation of DACA work permit renewals for anyone whose status will expire in the next six months. DHS officials state that valid permits will not be revoked or terminated, and will remain in effect until they expire. DACA was an executive order implemented in 2012 and allowed immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to remain here. The program allowed those young Dreamers to go to school in the U.S. and made them eligible to get a work permit (under a two-year period of deferred action) once they were of age. The act even allowed them to participate in the social security program. All of the benefits immigrants were given under DACA are now gone with the program. In his speech, Sessions let viewers know that the decision to end the program wasn’t done to deter immigrants, but was rather done in the best interests of the country. “This does not mean [Dreamers] are bad people or that our nation disrespects or demeans them in anyway,” Sessions announced. “It means we are properly enforcing our laws as Congress has passed them. It is with these principles and duties in mind, and in light of imminent litigation, that we reviewed the Obama Administration’s DACA policy.” The Department of Homeland Security announced plans on issuing further guidelines on how former DACA participants will be legally treated going forward into the 2018 year. The Immigrations and Customs Enforcement stated that there will be a continued prioritization of deportation of those undocumented people with criminal records. As Sessions said towards the end of his speech, “We cannot admit everyone who wants to come here.”

Rio Hondo Hosts Healing Circle Following DACA Announcement

With the Trump Administration announcing the elimination of the DACA program, many undocumented students are left wondering what’s in store for them now. Keeping this in mind, Rio Hondo held a Healing Circle inside the school’s Student Union. The event, which was open to students and staff, provided them with a platform to say what they were feeling. Rio Hondo’s Student Union room was daunted by a somber vibe on Tuesday afternoon. The room was filled with documented and undocumented students alike; all of whom felt some way about the DACA announcement. To start off the meeting, Rio reps passed out copies of the official memo released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding the DACA decision. After copies of the memo were passed out, students were told to get in “elbow-partner” groups of two or three to discuss their feelings about the issue amongst each other. One question that constantly came up was: what’s next? Dr. Mike Munoz, Executive Dean of Counseling and Student Equity, knows that everybody’s situation differentiates, so just assured them they are safe on Rio Hondo’s campus. “What we really wanted to do was really affirm Rio Hondo College’s commitment to all our students, especially our Dreamers right now,” Dr. Munoz said after the event. “Make sure that they know that they are not just welcomed, but they are wanted on this campus. To provide them with the most updated information that the college has access to and link them with resources and support should they need it.” Rio Hondo will be holding another Healing Circle for anybody who would like to talk more about the DACA elimination. The meeting will be held at one p.m. but the meeting place has yet to be announced.

The long anticipated wait for The Defenders was well worth it. Being able to see our favorite street level heroes team up was something worth witnessing. The Defenders, comprising of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Danny Rand also known as Iron Fist, and Matthew Murdock also known as Daredevil, has been building up since Daredevil season one which debuted on April 10, 2015 and ended with season one of Iron Fist which made it’s debut on March 17, 2017. The show starts off with a strong start that’s impossible to hate. It picks off immediately with every character moving forward where their solo series previously ended and each dealing with the problems that came with their last storyline. Netflix did an amazing job at humanizing them with Danny being haunted by his decision of leaving k’un lun and seeing his dead comrades which adds a whole new element to his character and how he views himself, Jessica being in denial with becoming a hero, and Matt struggling not to put on his suit to protect his beloved city. The way all of their stories intertwine feels natural and well done, with Iron Fist

The highly anticipated Defenders series hit Netflix in August to the delight of many.
hunting down the Hand leading him directly to a kid that Cage was following, this leads to a fun little back way alley fight between the unbreakable man and the immortal Iron Fist. Meanwhile Jessica has legal troubles when out of nowhere Murdock comes out of nowhere to defend her as
her lawyer. The pacing went smooth and was pleasing to see. There are a lot of comedic parts where the writers are self aware of how ridiculous it is to run around at night in a costume, or claim to fight a dragon to unlock your “Chi”. The cast has fantastic

chemistry which really shines throughout the series even when they are not necessarily getting along and actively butting heads. The Hand was also fun villain to see because you get to view things from there side which doesn’t happen all that often, it even shows off all the other members as well. It was also interesting to see some of the characters build up the trust through the show. Daredevil is broken, due to the aftermath of everything that has happened to him, throughout the whole show he constantly keeps secrets from the team and wants nothing to do with the rest of them. Seeing him come
around and trust them was great.Meanwhile Jessica Jones has to make the big strides become and see herself as a hero more than anyone else, she’s not one to get along with people so seeing her being able to team up and get along was strange, but nice to see. Overall, audiences should look forward more towards Marvel series on Netflix because seeing such grounded heros that struggle with living dual lives, balancing a healthy normal life, and fighting crime at night while being pushed to their limits is almost a work of art on it’s own.
Lady Roadrunners continued in their first home match. The Lady Roadrunners and the Hornets went backand-forth in the first half of the first set. Rio Hondo was eventually able to get some consistent play, though, and pulled away late. They took the first set 25-19. The second set of the match was a lopsided one; the Lady Roadrunners were dominant from the jump, easily winning the set with a score of 25-14. Much like the second set, Rio Hondo got off to a great start in the third. The Lady Roadrunners were able to work up a five-point lead early on in the set. The Fullerton Hornets came buzzing their way back, however. They were able to keep the game tight until the very end. The two teams were tied at 24, but a mistake on Fullerton’s end and a perfectly placed tip gave Rio Hondo the last two points. The Lady Roadrunners took the third and final set 26-24. Teddi Esko, head coach of
the Rio Hondo Lady Roadrunners volleyball team, is aware of the team’s bumpy start to the season, but proudly acknowledged her team’s hard work after Friday’s game. “We’ve been training so hard,” Coach Esko said, with a look of relief and joy mixed on her face. “We struggled at the beginning of the season, and for us to actually tie everything we been working on in a training session, in our first home match tonight, against a good Fullerton team… we just clicked on all cylinders. It was really fantastic to see everybody do their job on the court. We executed our game plan and the result came in our favor.” The Lady Roadrunners improved their record to 2-6 on the season with the win over Fullerton. They play at Antelope Valley in their next match on September 6.

The VMA’s are a worldwide phenomenon to honor those in the music industry. The 2017 VMA’s had incredible performances that made it hard to choose from the worst to the best. From artists like Kendrick Lamar and Logic who made it easy to get hooked on the performances to people like Lorde, who gave a mesmerizing dance performance. Although Lorde’s dance moves were entertaining to watch, the VMA’s are mainly viewed by the audience to see their favorite artist sing live and she didn’t sing. This was a time for her to show what her music and vocals were about, but due to her having the flu, she wasn’t able to give the audience her full potential as a performer. There wasn’t much to her performance other than dancing around and because of

Logic’s performance with Alessia Cara and Khalid, on the other hand, gave a performance that tugged the heartstrings of many people. Each individual had their own unique style of
performing and their own verse that put the song together. Not only was the title of Logic’s song a suicide hotline number, but he brought suicide survivors onto the stage and talked about mental health issues that mainstream media doesn’t talk about. This was his way to show those who are going through a similar situation that they’re not alone. He reminded us how grateful he is for the platform the audience has given him and continued to say he wants equality for everyone. “I don’t give a damn if you’re black, white or any color in between. I don’t care if you’re Christian, you’re Muslim, you’re gay, you’re straight, I am here to fight for your equality because I believe we are all born equal, but we are not treated equal,” Logic said. He continues to use his platform to spread what he says, “peace, love, and positivity. VMA’s is a popular event and it is important to remember the type of influence a show like this can bring. Many artists this year talked about issues such as social injustices, mental health issues, and beauty standards. Speaking up about issues like this and many more to a large audience and demographic can help connect people and make a difference in the world, which is what music has always been about.

Quantum Teleportation Is Here! LUIS GUTIERREZ Staff Writer
Beam me up, Scotty! Because quantum teleportation is here... well kinda. A team of scientists in China have just made a huge breakthrough in the way we communicate. They are saying this is the most secure way to communicate with others as well, without fear of someone interfering with it. You may be wondering what this is called well they call it “Quantum Communication” or better known as “Quantum Teleportation”. What they did was send information using only water particles to get from point A to point B. This is the very first time something like this has ever been achieved. What the team of scientists did was send information through a 10.8 foot long tank of seawater. But they are predicting that they will be able to use this secure way of communicating through .55 of open water.

This is all based off a weird phenomenon Albert Einstein called “Spooky at a Distance”. Quantum entanglement, in simpler terms, is when two particles become extremely linked together, whatever happens to one happens to the other no matter the distance. Although this is the first time we’ve been able to do this underwater,
doesn’t mean this is new at all. Matter of fact we’ve been able to do this in optic fiber and space. Earlier this year, Chinese researchers were able to use quantum entanglement to teleport information to a satellite in earth’s orbit 311 miles away. As previously mentioned, no one had done this underwater
before and to conduct this, researchers from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University took seawater from the Yellow sea and putting it into a 3mm tank. Then they created entangle photons (a type of elementary particle) by shooting a beam of light through a crystal. As predicted, whatever happened to one happened to the other on
the opposite side,The information goes through accurately 98% of the time too. Many people are predicting this might be the new way of communicating to one another. Some people are even going as far saying this might be used to obtain lightning fast internet for everyday people to use.
Wine That’s Aged To Perfection DAVID SOLORZANO Staff Writer
GREEKBOSTON.COM This discovery redefines our understanding of the history of wine in Italy as this site came at least 2,000 years before.
When it comes to wine, the biggest question on everyone’s mind is how long ago did humans begin drinking this lovely beverage that we must wait to drink at its best. Who makes the best, is red or white better, and how long are you willing to wait? As of recent discovery in Italy, the oldest wine found on the Great Peninsula was chemically dated to around 6,000 years old. A team led by David Tansai of the University of South Florida came
across a piece of ancient pottery in a cave that revealed traces of tartaric acid (the primary ingredient in tracing the histories of wine). Interestingly enough, the same ingredient can be traced back to wine found in Iran and China as far back as 7,000 B.C. This discovery by Tansai puts the pottery around 4,000 BCE, which baffles wine historians and researchers that once believed that Italy started producing various wines only 2,500 years ago. Due to Tansai and his team’s discovery, most of wine history must be redone to up-
date the origins of wine. The site, located on the Southwest coast of Sicily, is where the artifact was found. After the team performed a chemical analysis, it was declared the oldest wine ever found on the peninsula of Italy. This great archeological and scientific find has been added to the array of recently discovered ancient foods and beverages, such as a 2,000 year old tea or a 3,000 year old beer recipe that is being put into production for modern beer drinkers and connoisseurs to enjoy.

Several of Trump’s Cyber Security Team Resign JACOBO GARRIDO Staff Writer
Last week several members of Trumps cybersecurity team NIAC resigned to protest Trump’s response to the violence and racism that occurred in Charlestown, as well as the decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. Being founded in 2001 by former President Bush, the NIAC advises the president on critical
infrastructure security. A resignation letter received by NextGov explained the protesters stance on the president’s views and decision making. Out of the 28 members of NIAC, or National Infrastructure Advisory Council, 8 conveyed that the President’s “actions have threatened the security of the homeland I took an oath to protect.” With tensions high, the U.S. is vulnerable to developing threats to its cybersecurity. On
May 11th Trump signed an executive order to have the main Cabinet members to carry out complete reviews of each department. The main purpose of the order was to determine the effectiveness at detecting and securing data. The deadline for this order was set on June 23 which has since passed. With the lack of a secured cybersecurity, this leaves the U.S. vulnerable to cyber attacks. The letter also com-
ments on Trump’s failure to denounce neo-Nazi’s and White Nationalists in this month’s violence that occurred in Charlestown. With Trump’s less than satisfying response to the display of racism as well as his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. This reveals that President Trump has a “disregard for the security of American communities.” The letter goes on to say, “The moral infrastructure of our Nation is the
foundation on which our physical infrastructure is built. The Administration’s actions undermine that foundation.” T hree of the eight members who resigned from Trump’s cybersecurity team were from Obama’s administration DJ Patil, Cristin Dorgelo, and Christy Goldfuss affirming their resignations from the council on Twitter.

8 million copies sold since March! The indie shooter has been considered by many one of the best games to come out of 2017, with a growing player base. If you haven’t heard or seen the gameplay , it’s simple to understand. You can play with
friends or go solo. You’re dropped off on a deserted island with 100 other players. The objective of the game is to be the last man or team standing while surviving a onslaught of the other players trying to kill you with weapons they’ve looted, or run you over
with vehicles they’ve found. All while trying not to be murdered by your fellow players the map will close in forcing you to close in on other players. if you decide not to cooperate you’ll be killed by the game. In a nutshell that’s the game. Since E3 Playersu-

His development team Korean Studio Bluehole has the full dispense of Microsoft at their use. It’s no doubt the game will strive to be better than ever now. So, now with the full help of Microsoft, it’s almost certain they will hit their expected release date of late 2017, and you can almost guarantee that it’ll be getting triple A treatment since this is one of Microsoft’s biggest exclusives coming this fourth quarter. It’s still very unclear though if this will be coming out on playstation or not.
