Calderon is a democrat, a Whittier native, and the youngest Majority Leader in the history of California. His youth was a point of focus in his presentation, speaking both of the Millennial caucus recently created in the State Assembly, a Millennial referring person born after 1980 and before 2000. He also addressed issues youth face in changing legislature, and until recently, the lack of representation they have had in the Assembly. Calderon explained that he visits colleges at such Pizza and Politics events to give young voters in his district direct contact to their legislative representatives. Accusations that Chechnya authorities have been detaining gay men and taking them to places where they are tortured and sometimes kill has surfaced. Calderon explained the importance of having people in his generation have their voices heard, and how dismissive he believes former legislators have been of the youth, citing the monetary burdens former legislations have ignored and pushed back for newer generations to handle. “They think we’re stupid, like we can’t make decisions for ourselves. They want us to continue to be part of a system that doesn’t work for us, that doesn’t really cater to us. Yet we’re important when they want us to come vote for somebody who’s gonna perpetuate that system,” a frustrated and passionate Calderon said. “In the end it’s your fu-

Others who escaped described being put into rooms where 15 to 30 prisoners were placed without food and tortured with electric shocks and beaten, sometimes to death. Some of the captives included well known figures in Chechnya, including a local news presenter. In a statement to dailymail.com Alexander Artemyev, from Amnesty International in Russia, said ‘’We can only call on the Russian authorities to investigate the allegations. Homosexuals in Chechnya are treated very harshly and prosecuted daily and they are afraid to talk about it.” Artemyev went on to say, “They either have to hide or leave the republic. We are keeping in touch with the LGBT network that helps people in Russia to find shelter. The problem is people there cannot talk about it as it puts their lives and those they speak to, in danger. This is the main issue we are facing in Russia and the main challenge.” Ekaterina Sokirianskaia, Russia project director for the International Crisis Group,

told dailymail.com that the story is going to continue to develop as more people escape. A spokesman for Chechnya’s leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, denied the report in a statement to Interfax April 8. “You cannot arrest or repress people who just don’t exist in the republic,” spokesman, Alvi Karimov, said to the news agency. “If such people existed in Chechnya, law enforcement would not have to worry about them, as their own relatives would have sent them to where they could never return,” said Karimov. Natalia Poplevskaia, the International Advocacy Officer and Monitoring Program Coordinator with the Russian LGBT Network, talked about receiving around 30 messages since April 2 from either current or former Chechnya residents who have already been evacuated. Since learning about the incidents Poplevskaia said that the organization has set up an emergency hotline. There were no specific details on how people were evacuated out due to safety reasons. Maxim Eristavi, a Ukrainian journalist and openly gay man, told NBC News “What is happening right now with gay men is part of a longtime practice of
state violence towards dissenting voices in Chechnya.” Eristavi added how reporters from the Novaya Gazeta reporting in that area have been killed in the past. Though Eristavi has taken an issue with media calling the center a “gay concentration camp” since the center is not only used for lgbtq+ people, but others as well. “Calling it a concentration camp is actually inaccurate. Creating more misinformation can damage and endanger people on the ground and discredit those who are trying to bring more attention to the issue,” said Eristavi. Despite this, the situation has been described as being the worst abuse lgbtq+ people have faced in years. Maria Sjodin, Deputy Executive Director at Outright International, has told NBC news that they’ve never had this many attacks reported at one time ever and most incidents, while common, are irregular. Sjodin says that it is Russia’s responsibility to respond to this and, “The international community has to put pressure on Russia to intervene.”

Trump Supporters and Opponents Brawl at a California Park DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter
danielle.anzures8473@my.riohondo.edu
Supporters and opponents of President Donald Trump were holding competing rallie April 15 at a Berkeley, California park when a fight broke out which resulted in at least 20 arrests as cops attempted to keep the groups apart according to Reuters. As fist fights between people broke out there were cans and bottles throw between a barricade separating them, police ended up having to throw an explosive device at one point in hopes of regaining peace. People were viewed as having bloodied faces and
minor injuries by a Reuters reporter. There were eleven people injured and seven people were taken to a hospital in unknown condition, Berkeley Police spokesman Byron White said in a CNN report. “A large number of fights have occurred and numerous fireworks have been thrown in the crowds,” Berkeley police said in a statement according to CNN. “There have also been numerous reports of pepper spray being used in the crowd.” The incident occurred after opponents of Trump created a counter-protest against a pro-Trump event put on by Trump support-
ers called “Patriots Day”, which was suppose to be a free speech rally and picnic according to Reuters. It was estimated by a Reuters reporter that around 500 to 1000 people were at the event as the rallies reach its climax. As the fights broke out the crowd started moving to the streets, and traffic cones, fireworks and bottles were thrown into crowds according to CNN. A Berkeley station for BART, the mass transit system, was shut down because of the riots and police forces ended up using pepper spray on the crowd. Police confiscated prohibited items including hand-held flagpoles, a knife, a stun gun,
helmets and signs, and flags attached to poles. Counter-protesters dressed in black and wearing masks were among the Trump opponents, while the other side included Trump supporters, free speech advocates, self-proclaimed “patriots” and “nationalists”, and other groups as reported by Reuters. “As a veteran, I like the track America is on, and that Trump is willing to stand and say we are still America and we are not going to be globalist, we’re not going to be a communist country,” Daryl Tempesta, a 52-year-old who served in U.S. Air Force near the end of the Cold War, who
went in support of Trump said. “That’s a message I can get behind.” Despite the disturbance and cancellation of a weekly farmer’s market event, due to the event, a stand was still opened during the rallies. “We decided to show up anyway because this is our livelihood,” said Tim Mueller, a farmer who owns the stall. The fight continued on to one of the city’s main intersections with at least 100 people where they continued yelling and fighting each other, there the police presence was smaller with only two to three officers seen near the crossroads.

Constituents of the 38th District Meet with Congresswoman Linda Sanchez Over Immigration and Other Pressing Issues ZACKARY MEJIA Manging Editor zackary.mejia1736@my.riohondo.edu
Congresswoman Linda Sanchez had a 90-minute Q and A town hall meeting with her constituents of California’s 38th congressional district Tuesday, April 10. The meeting was organized and hosted by Sanchez’s office, and took place in Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School Excelsior Auditorium. The focus of the forum was on Sanchez’s federal policy concerning immigration, healthcare, federal budget cuts, voting rights, bipartisanship, and education funding. Questions were taken from the audience, as well as cards that attendees turned in before the forum began. The opening policy questions posed to Sanchez were the HR-676 single payer health care bill, and the work she has done to support the Social Security Administration. Being a member of the Ways and Means committee and the Social Security Subcommittee, she spoke of her efforts to continue the solvency of social security. Sanchez proposed the idea of removing the monthly input-cap of $2,639 an individual can make to their social security as means to give the public more control over their retirement plan and raise the program’s available funds. She also plans to continue to work towards getting senior citizens tax breaks. HR-676 is a single payer, or universal, health care bill that was originally introduced in 2003 by democratic representative John Conyers of Michigan’s 13th district. Since then, it has been reintroduced into the House of Representatives every congress but has yet to gain enough traction to be debated. At the forum, Sanchez

explained that she had co-sponsored the bill in previous congresses currently supports its legislation but, with the opposition party in control of the legislative and executive branches, defending the Affordable Care Act takes priority. Sanchez’s healthcare policy was repeated questioned by audience members who were unsatisfied with her reservations about co-sponsoring HR-676 while congress is controlled by the republicans. It cumulated when an audience member feigned ignorance as to why Sanchez would not endorse the single payer healthcare bill. “We stand up to fight, to advocate for our communities,” said Sanchez, “but
at the end of the day, they [congressional republicans] have the vote…You have to pick and choose your battles. Right now, the Affordable Care Act is mine.” While many in attendance found her pragmatic response sincere, giving her a round of applause after she clarified her position, there were dissenters who weren’t about to let her off easy. One audience member refused to accept her answer, and questioned why the democrats didn’t pass single payer healthcare when they controlled both the legislative and executive branches in 2008. Another questioned the democratic party’s corruption in the 2016 election and
threatened to leave the party if change doesn’t occur. A self-confessed stickler for the rules, having been on the house ethics committee for six years, Sanchez was unable to answer those questions since they were politically and not policy driven. Sanchez maintained her pragmatic policy of attrition when questioned on immigration. She supports a comprehensive immigration reform bill that handles both the presence of undocumented immigrants and maintaining border security in a humane way. She opposes the current administration’s policies and handing of undocumented immigrants. Due to the reclassification of “criminal immigrant”
the Immigration and Customs Enforcement has free reign to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants who were charged but not convicted of a crime and people who are suspected to have broken a law but have not been charged. “It is very clear to me,” said Sanchez, “that there is a different sentient that this administration has towards immigrants.” Sanchez also opposes the planned cuts to several federal agencies, including the EPA, NIH, and the State Department. In response to President Trump appointing several relatives to high positions in his administration, Sanchez introduced the “Rigged Act” to the House Oversight and Government Reform committee Jan. 13. She explained that the legislation would prevent this administration, and future ones, from providing tax payed government resources, such as an office space, staff, and car services to relatives. These resources would be reclassified as a form of payment which is currently illegal under anti-nepotism laws. The final questions of the night were on the polarization congress appears to be, as seen through media. To the audience’s surprise, Sanchez insisted that while the two political parties are avowedly opposed to the other, there is bipartisanship between individual members. Both sides of the aisle have constituents with similar, in some cases the same, problems that require representatives to reach out and work with the opposition. “There is a lot more bipartisanship going on than you see. It does happen, but it’s very quiet”, said Sanchez.

ture, you’re going to have to live in it.” Calderon touched on the cost of college, and was prompted by a student asking about potential legislation to control the rising cost of textbooks. While he admitted there was currently no legislation addressing textbook costs, he spoke about his concerns regarding student debt, third party loans, and the State Assembly’s attempt to ease those concerns. “I know kids who have an interest rate of 23% on [third party loans], and that’s a lot of debt that you’re going to have to pay down when you graduate,” Calderon lamented. “Right now there’s a proposal by the Assembly which moves around different pots of money that we have in the state, and over the next year, we’ll try to create a system with less debt than you are [expected to have] now.” The California assemblyman addressed the issue of Planned Parenthood, and while admitting the issue was more of a federal concern, defended the non-profit organization and the array of benefits and services it
provides women, and clarified the controversial service of abortion the organization is known for, only accounts for 7% of it’s funding. “When it comes to planned parenthood, the abortion aspect is so small in relation to the health care benefits they actually provide,” Calderon said. “We’re committed to Planned Parenthood and being able to provide access. A lot of my friends...they accessed Planned Parenthood all the time and that was something that was important to them, so I want to make sure that was something that continued to stay active in our state.” Another question Calderon explored was the issue of Social Security and the concern held by many young people due to current projections stating there would be no funding left for future retirees to benefit from. Calderon could only give an unenthusiastic and sober response, saying that the burden may fall on the youth, and that the government is unreliable. “I think [we are] in a lot
of ways, as I would characterize it, ‘on our own,’ because I don’t see the federal government doing anything about it. At least not within the next few years, at least not in this administration, [does] it seem like there are going to be those types of reforms,” Calderon said. A major concern on the Rio Hondo campus in the current administration, and something the campus itself has attempted to protect itself from, is the influx of deportation, and the recent actions students of Rio Hondo have made the school a Sanctuary Campus, protecting the identities and information of undocumented it’s students. Calderon addressed the controversial California Senate bill 54, that would make California a sanctuary state, as well as addressing the criticism from the current administration, including the fact that in recent interview, President Donald Trump threatened to defund the state if the bill were passed. “I suspect it’s going to pass the senate...and I suspect it’s going to pass the assembly. I don’t know if it
is going to get signed by the governor or not because we are in a way playing a little bit of Russian Roulette with the federal government,” Calderon explained. “In the end we accept the most amount of money from the federal government, but we also put in the most amount of money.” “There are state’s rights. In terms of the ability for them to defund us, I think it would be very difficult, and to be honest with [the audience], if they tried to defund us because of anything immigration related, we would probably sue the federal government. And due to states rights, and [because] we believe in our interpretation under the constitution, that we would win that fight,” Calderon said. He went on to describe immigrants as a vital and powerful source in our economy, citing a story in Alabama that had immigrants flee the state, only for institutions like agriculture to without immigrant support. Calderon also took time to criticize the current administration, as well as President Donald Trump and his often
controversial but ultimately meritless claims. “From this president and from what I’ve look at in this administration, there’s what they do and then there’s what they say, and those don’t always necessarily line up... Donald Trump has said a lot, this administration has talked a lot, but still have not done it,” Calderon argued. “It’s more about what he says versus what he does.” Calderon encouraged students of Rio Hondo, as well as any person living in the 57th district to contact him with concerns, both personal and political. He is expected to continue attending events like this throughout the district. Attendees were provided Domino’s pizza and beverages. Students were able to talk to Calderon in person following the presentation, and collect literature regarding internship opportunities, ways to contact the California legislature and information about state granted financial aid.
United States Drops the “Mother of All Bombs” in Afghanistan
XAVIER ALATORRE Reporter
xavier.alatorre1457@my.riohondo.edu
The United States dropped the “mother of all bombs” on an Islamic State cave complex in Afghanistan Thursday April 13, the Pentagon said. It is the most powerful non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal. The bomb is so massive that it has to be delivered via cargo plane and dropped from the rear of the aircraft. This was the first use of what is formally named the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast in warfare. President Trump has not commented on whether he personally authorized the mission. However, he has granted additional authority to the Pentagon to conduct
missions without direct approval. “What I do is I authorize my military,” Mr. Trump said after a meeting with emergency workers at the White House. He called the bombing “another very, very successful mission.” So far, no casualty totals have been released. However, the Pentagon announced that 18 Syrian fighters allied with the United States were killed in a separate bombing campaign in Syria. The announcement caused alarm about whether the Trump Administration is applying any rigor to approving airstrikes from Afghanistan to Syria. The bombing in Syria is the third US-led strike in a month that may have killed civilians and allies. Earli-
er bombing runs killed or wounded scores of civilians in a mosque complex in Syria and in a building in the west of Mosul, Iraq. “We have the greatest military in the world,” said Mr. Trump. “We have given them total authorization, and that’s what they’re doing, and frankly, that’s why they’ve been so successful lately.” The number of civilian casualties reported in American-led strikes in Iraq and Syria has increased since Mr. Trump took office. Reports of civilian casualties in Iraq and Syria jumped to 3,471 from 1,782 the month before, said Airwars, a group that tracks bombings. Mr. Trump has relaxed some of the rules for preventing civilian casualties when the military carries out
counterterrorism strikes in Somalia and Yemen. “Trump has ceded responsibilities to his military commanders, and it appears he’s paying little attention to operational details,” said Derek Chollet, who was the assistant secretary of defense for international affairs in the Obama administration. “Here’s the question,” Mr. Chollet added. “Trump takes great pride in his authorizing the military when things go well, but one wonders if he’ll have the same sense of shared accountability when things go wrong, as they inevitably do.” Thursday’s strike in Afghanistan hit a tunnel complex in the Achin district of Nangarhar Province, according to a statement from the United States military in
Afghanistan. The statement did not say how many militants were killed, or whether the bombing caused any civilian casualties. The bomb is designed to destroy tunnels and other underground facilities, and its blast is estimated to stretch a mile in every direction. While the damage from the bombing, which occurred at night in a remote area, was unclear, the strike quickly brought backlash. Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan’s former president, was among those who condemned it. “This is not the war on terror but the inhuman and most brutal misuse of our country as testing ground for new and dangerous weapons,” Mr. Karzai wrote on Twitter. “It is upon us, Afghans, to stop the USA.”

Journalist Killed in Mexico, The Fourth in Six Weeks XAVIER ALATORRE Reporter

A Mexican journalist, Maximino Rodriguez Palacios, was shot dead outside of a shopping center Friday April 14 in La Paz, a coastal city in the state of Baja California Sur. He was 72 years old. Palacios wrote about politics and crime for the Pericu Collective. He had previously worked as a spokesman for the state attorney general’s office. Attacks on Mexican journalists have been ongoing since March 2. Palacios’ death is the fourth life claimed by brazen killings. The attacks have drawn condemnation from human
rights advocates, with the Committee to Protect Journalists calling the situation in Mexico a “crisis” of freedom of expression. Mexico is the world’s third-most dangerous country for journalists, after Syria and Afghanistan, according to Reporters Without Borders. Since 2000, 124 journalists have been killed, according to Mexico’s human rights commission. March 23, well-known investigative reporter for the national La Jornada was gunned down in the northern state of Chihuahua while driving with one of her children. March 19, columnist Ricardo Monlui was shot twice as he left a restaurant with his wife and son in Veracruz, and on March 2, Cecilio
Pineda Birto, a freelancer and the founder of La Voz de Tierra Caliente, was shot and killed at a car wash in Guerrero state. The violence is so severe that a newspaper in Juarez, Mexico has decided to shut down for a month to protect its journalists. The editor said that the violence was “preventing us from continuing freely with our work.” Palacios had covered the increase in crime in his home state for the Pericu Collective. He documented killings on a regular basis, and also wrote a column that touched on controversial topics. Palacios recently wrote about a local union whose boss was allegedly corrupt.

18 Syrian Fighters Allied with U.S. Killed in Coalition Airstrike
LISA GARCIA Reporter
lisa.garcia5612@my.riohondo.edu
An airstrike by the American led coalition fighting the Islamic State killed 18 Syrian fighters allied with the United States, military officials said Thursday, April 13. The strike, which occurred Tuesday in Tabqah, Syria, was the third time in a month that the American-led airstrikes may have killed civilians and allies. As this situation was occurring, it was discovered that the pentagon had been investigating two previous airstrikes that had killed and or wounded scores of civilians in a mosque complex in Syria as well as in a building located in the west of Mosul, Iraq. Tuesday’s strike was demanded by allies who were on the ground near Tabqah, in which the United States Central Command manages combat operations in the Middle East. The fighters had called in the airstrikes and “identified the target location as an ISIS fighting position,” by using another name for the Islamic State. The central command statement said that
The suspect, 37-year-old Steve Stephens, stepped out of his car and walked up to Robert Godwin, a 74-year-old father of nine, and shot him. As of April 17, there is no known motive or evidence that Godwin was targeted. In a press briefing, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams confirmed that police have contacted Stephens via cell phone, and have managed to ask him to turn himself over. Those efforts have yet to result in any major leads or an arrest. “We are asking him to turn himself in,” pleaded Williams in the briefing. “We want this to end with as much peace as we can bring to this right now. We want him to turn himself in. If that doesn’t happen, again, we have we have all of our partners [state and county police, as well as the FBI] in on this.” Maggie Green, the suspect’s mother, says that
the target location turned out to be a “fighting position” for the Syrian Democratic Forces, who have been fighting the Islamic State alongside the United States. It was unclear whether the strike came from an American warplane or one from the other coalition partners. “The coalition’s deepest condolences go out to the members of the S.D.F and their families,” said the Central Command center in a statement. “Tragic.” As the American-led military campaigns against the Islamic State, Military officials say Iraqi forces will retake Mosul in what is to be seen as the last big urban hurdle to defeating the extremist Sunni militant group in Iraq while forces allied with the United States are moving in on the group’s de facto capital of Raqqa, in Syria. President Trump himself has indicated that unlike President Barack Obama, who had his white house scrutinize many military operations, he will leave more operational decision making to the Pentagon as well as the American commanders in the field.
her son’s actions are a reaction to recent break up. “He said this (was) the last time I was going to see him,” Green told CNN. “If you see me again, it’ll be a miracle,” she says, allegedly quoting her son. The victim, Godwin was taking a walk on the street after an Easter afternoon spent with his family, Godwin’s son alleges. “He is a good guy...he’d give you the shirt off his back and I’m not just saying that for these cameras,” a mourning Robert Godwin, Jr., the victim’s son told WOIO. “This man right here was a good man. I hate he’s gone.” Facebook has since removed both Stephen’s account and the video of the murder, however the graphic material is still available online.

Net Neutrality: Days Are Numbered
DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter
danielle.anzures8473@my.riohondo.edu
Chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission, Ajit Pai, has quickly moved to remove all of previous President Barack Obama’s net neutrality rules according to Reuters. Under Obama’s 2015 approved FCC rules, broadband providers were prohibited from giving or selling faster internet to certain internet service over others, and with that the FCC also reclassified internet service providers much like utilities.
Pai, who has always felt net neutrality was a mistake, wants to overturn that reclassification and have internet service providers voluntarily promise to keep the internet open and not slow down consumer’s web content. The chairman, appointed by President Donald Trump, met with major telecommunications trade groups to talk about his plans April 4. According to officials at the meeting, Pai suggested to make it official by having companies commit to the changes in writing and put them in the terms of services.
It is unclear whether regulators would be able to legally enforce internet providers to accept the open internet policy with existing net neutrality rules, because of that the Federal Trade Commission would be put in charge of making sure providers comply with the changes. Pai’s plans to overturn the rules can be revealed as soon as late April and the plan can face voting in May or June according to sources in Reuters article. Internet providers, like AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., and Comcast
Corp., have been arguing that the new rules would make investment in additional capacity less likely and make it harder to manage internet traffic. Websites are also worried that without the rules they will lose access to customers. According to privacy advocates and Democrats, net neutrality is crucial to keeping the internet open. “Existing net neutrality rules should be enforced and kept intact,” the Internet Association wrote in a follow-up transparency filing according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.
Pai, who said net neutrality days were numbered, told Reuters in a previous report from February that he believes “in a free and open internet and the only question is what regulatory framework best secures that.” Pai and congressional Republicans have moved to get rid of old telecommunications rules and Trump signed the repeal on broadband privacy rules Obama had placed during his time April 3.
Cyber Attacks Linked To CIA CARLOS DIEGO SANCHEZ Reporter
carlos.sanchez5477@my.riohondo.edu
A string of cyber attacks across the globe that were conducted with classified hacking tools were brought to light by the Web publisher WikiLeaks. This information suggests that the attacks were likely conducted by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Multiple files exposed by WikiLeaks appear to show
internal CIA conversations of various tools for hacking into phones, computers, and electronic gear. Also included with the discussions was a programming code for some electronic devices. Having access to the programming codes allows hackers to completely control various devices. The documents released came from the CIA or their contractors. Symantec said it had connected at least 40 attacks in 16 countries to the
tools obtained by WikiLeaks, however it followed company policy by not formally blaming the CIA. The multiple attacks on 16 countries involved targeting the country’s government and security. The CIA has not confirmed the Wikileaks documents are genuine. The CIA tools described by Wikileaks do not involve mass surveillance, and all of the targets were government entities or had legitimate national secu-

British Streamer Swatted DANNY CELIZ Reporter d.celiz@live.com
A British man has become the first person to be charged by police for placing a false threat which resulted in a US video game streamer getting shot in the face and chest with rubber bullets, fracturing his skull and bruising his lungs. Robert McDaid, 21, is suspected to have placed a call to the terrorism hotline posing to be a man named Tyran Dobbs in the state of Maryland. The caller claimed to be armed with a firearm, numerous bags of explosives, and three hostages that would be killed on the spot unless $15,000 was delivered to the caller’s address. The address given is the home of the real Tyran Dobbs, 20, who was asleep during this time. Armed police forces raided the Dobbs’s household and shot the 20-year-old between the eyes and chest with rubber bullets. After police had realized that Dobbs had been falsely accused of terrorism, investigators traced the call to Robert McDaid who lives in Coventry, a city in England. McDaid has now been
charged in the US with three offenses that include conspiracy to produce false information and hoax. If convicted, McDaid could face a maximum of 20 years in prison. The US Department of Justice reported that McDaid was allegedly requested by US gamer, Zachary Lee to assist in the “swatting” of Dobbs. Zachary Lee has also been charged with the same offenses. Rod Rosenstein, who has been nominated by President Trump to be Deputy Attorney General at the US Department of Justice, said: “We are working with officials in the UK to ensure that Robert McDaid is held accountable for his alleged actions because the alleged criminal activity represents a grave threat to public safety.” In the intervening time, Tyran Dobbs has started to disparage the police for not checking the authenticity of the call before acting. It has been reported that officers ignored both the father and cousin of Tyran Dobbs who were telling police that there were no hostages in the house. In an interview with news station ABC7, Tyran Dobbs said: “How did y’all not trace this call back? How did y’all
not figure out where it came from? I want justice. I want them to pay for my medical damages, and I want whoever shot me in my face to have to do some time.” The tactic of calling
armed police on others has been termed “swatting.” While the practice has been around for decades and has continued to grow more in popularity over the past years, it has been mainly

In his second year and ready to transfer out, the 20-year-old became aware of major by great work of writing. “In high school, we had to do a senior project and on the writing part I had great feedback from teachers that no errors were found,” said Escobar. “From there, English became an interest of major.” By the time college came around, joining the summer magazine, Pete had expanded his major to Journalism, which also brought learning layout, photography, and design. Being the A&E Editor, duties like telling a story and drawing readers attention have been a goal for Escobar in becoming a great journalist; but challenges have slid in between the young journalist’s growth in writing. “Being a part of the newspaper has shown me many ways I could do with my major; Photography is one of them. Traveling on a Budget ASHLEY LOPEZ Reporter
ashley.lopez3511@my.riohonod.edu
Traveling can be viewed as a distant luxury, especially being a college student. Planning a trip can initially be thought of as expensive, but can actually be the opposite if the right tools and tips are used. The first destination to search cheap flights is Skyscanner.com or the Skyscanner app. The website and app allows flights to be filtered by airline, dates, and times. There are options to select specific dates by looking at a calendar or look at a chart to view the dates. The chart represents how expensive or cheap flights are for various dates. Skyscanner makes it easy to compare airlines to find the cheapest one. Once a flight is selected, Skyscanner redirects to the airlines official webpage to complete the booking. Gasbuddy is useful if a desired trip is drivable, and does not require a flight. The website has a fuel calculator to determine how much it would cost to drive to a selected destination.
Planning a place to stay is the second major part of a trip. Hotels.com and Airbnb give a range of options. Hotels.com is an online accommodation booking website. The site gives various filter options to select prices, destinations, and dates. Hotel prices are generally low through the site compared to booking directly with hotels. The site also has daily deals, which gives cheaper hotel rates on pre-selected properties. Airbnb is a marketplace where ordinary people list their homes for travelers to book. Their website and app allows travelers to filter through properties based on location. Each property has profiles that include a bio section of the owners, and reviews from people who previously stayed on the property. Whether a trip is a long car ride up north to San Francisco or a plane ride to New York, traveling is within reach.

The 15th Annual 38th Congressional District High School Art Competition took place at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts April 13. This competition required High School students in the district to submit their work so that panels of local district artists could select the winning entries. 197 students were featured, and placed into one of eight categories: Prints, drawing, painting, mixed media, photography, collage, and computer generated pieces. The awards themselves ranged from honorable mentions, to fourth through first place. The winner of the overall competition would receive a trip to Washington DC to meet the other district winners and would have their artwork hang in the halls of the capital. It was a bustling celebration of young artists that fea-
tured the best and brightest that the district has to offer. Individuals of all backgrounds filled the hall and admired the art, fueled by an interestingly delicious caterer and serenaded by the sounds of a local DJ. Scott Smith, President/ CEO at Cerritos Regional Chamber of Commerce, Christopher Apodaca, President of the ABC Education Board, and Congresswoman Linda Sanchez were the three speakers at the event. Since its creation, Sanchez has sponsored the event which was created as the community’s celebration of art education and the promotion of young artists. “One of the things I hope to do for the residents in my district is inspire people to pursue their passion and their dream… and art is something that makes us human. Art is a medium through which people can be provocative, create new ideas and make social statements or political comments,” said Sanchez before the ceremony. She expanded on this idea
during her actual speech, discussing how vital it is to keep supporting programs such as art education. As one who has stressed in recent interviews to have to pick and choose political battles, Sanchez and her administration strongly support the futures of young artists. The winner of the entire competition was Elizabeth Islas for her drawing called “A Form of Expression.” “I’ve always wanted to do art… and to be able to win this really tells me that I have a good chance and I should take it,” said Islas about her win. It’s this sentiment that the organizers of the event were trying to convey to all young artists. The Arts, education, and the support of the new generation of creators are a priority of all who helped to organize the competition.

‘13 Reasons Why’ Was Hannah Baker’s Final Scene Necessary? JENNIFER ESPANA Opinion Editor

Netflix has released yet another amazing series, “13 Reasons Why” is based on the best selling novel by Jay Asher. The story follows the aftermath of a suicide, and if you haven’t watched the show
I suggest you stop reading now since there are major spoilers in the rest of the article. You have been warned. The show starts with Hannah Baker’s suicide and how her high school is dealing with the loss. Baker leaves a box of cassette tapes that contain the various reasons why she ultimately takes her own life. Each cassette tape has two sides, A and B, and she dedicated each side to specific people.
Clay Jensen, Baker’s love interest, is seen dealing with the aftermath of her suicide and his guilt since her feelings for him were unrequited. Those with sensitive constitutions should be warned before watching this show, as there is a graphic scene of Baker’s suicide. It’s important to note that depression and suicide should not be romanticized. There is nothing morbidly romantic or funny about suicide. Watching this
show was painful for many reasons, Baker’s silent suffering hit too close to home for many viewers. “13 Reasons Why” has received a lot of mixed reviews, many praising the show for touching on such a sensitive topic while others criticized the insensitivity in which suicide was broached. Whether you agree with the reviews or not, it’s vital to remember to reach out to those in need of help. Sometimes all someone needs is a compassionate ear. If you, or anyone you know, are suffering with bullying, depression, or are having suicidal thoughts, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. You can also make an appointment with the Student Health & Psychological Services located in SS230 (second floor of the student services building) or call (562) 908-3438.

The Rio Hondo baseball team fell short in a fourteen inning loss to Antelope Valley College April 11 at The Jungle. The Roadrunners tallied up ten runs on nineteen hits but couldn’t hold off the Marauders. RHC trailed behind AVC the entire game starting off in the top of the first inning. Second basemen for AVC, Michael Behen, had a RBI on a fielder’s choice that brought in Frankie Linstrom. Starting pitcher for the Roadrunners, Edmundo Fernandez pitched five innings giving up nine hits and allowing seven runs. In the following inning, the Marauders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when John Serrato hit a two RBI double to bring in Kyle Lathrop and Anthony Parisi. Antelope Valley scored once again in the top of the third inning when Parisi doubled to bring in two runs. On the double Joseph Cochran and Daniel Gomez both came in to score. With an early 5-0 deficit, Rio Hondo responded in the bottom half on the third inning when power hitting R.J. Romo doubled in
the left-center gap to bring in Marcos Rivas and Gabe Chavez.
following top half of the fifth inning AVC tacked on another run when Ethan Avant scored

Roadrunners were trailing 9-6 when some comeback heroics took place. Rivas and Romo both were on base when Buenrostro hit a clutch double to bring them both in and make it a one run game. The bases were loaded when a wild pitch by Alex Ravago allowed Buenrostro to score and tie up the game. The game then headed into extra innings. The excitement continued in the top of the fourteenth when AVC scored off of a base hit by Parisi bringing in Avant. The deciding run was given up by Brady Carlson who also ended up taking the loss, changing his record to 3-2 on the season. The Roadrunners fell to 16-14 on the season looking forward to their next game April 13th in Oxnard which they also ended up losing 6-5. Updating their overall record to a game above .500 at 16-15. Lady Roadrunners Softball Team Come from Behind to Beat Chaffey College in the Bottom of the Seventh Inning CRYSTIAN MENDOZA Sports Editor
crystian.mendoza8414@my.riohondo.edu
The Rio Hondo College softball team hosted Chaffey College April 11 in a game that would see the Lady Roadrunners come from behind to win the game 4-3 after a stellar performance from sophomore pitcher Brenae Martinez. Martinez only allowed one earned run in the seventh-inning rally between both sides and ultimately scored the winning run against the Panthers in the South Coast Conference North Division matchup. The game started off in Chaffey College’s favor, opening the scoring in the top of the first inning after Amberly Dietrich stole second base while teammate Isabelle Dena stole home. Chaffey added two more runs in the second after Dena tripled getting two RBI as Vanessa Garcia and Morgan Finley scored to get an early 3-0 lead
against Rio Hondo College. The Lady Roadrunners scored a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a two-out double by Sarah Hauffen-Salgado, getting an RBI that brought home Karina Gomez, making it a 3-1 game. Rio Hondo would continue to chip away at the Panther’s lead and in the bottom of the fourth inning Marissa Macias singled getting an RBI while advancing to second base as Gomez scored another. With the score now at 3-2, Rio Hondo continued to pressure Chaffey College and in the bottom of the fifth inning Loren Pichardo’s double and RBI brought home Jelissa Castanon to tie the game at 3-3 as the Lady Roadrunners continued to pressure the Panther’s with hopes of a comeback within reach. The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning when a moment of brilliance from Martinez pulled out the win for Rio
Hondo in an inning that appeared to be dead after a sacrificial bunt resulted in a double-play minimizing the Lady Roadrunner’s chances to close out the game. Next up to bat, Martinez was walked to first base followed by Desiree Rhodes who was also walked advancing both before Martinez broke away to steal third. With Gomez at the plate, a passing error from Chaffey College’s third baseman saw Martinez break away for home to score the game-winner for Rio Hondo College. Martinez went two for three in the contest and was one of three players in the match to get two hits, with Macias going two for two while Pichardo was two for three. The win over Chaffey College improved the Lady Roadrunners overall record to 9-24 and 2-6 in the South Coast Conference North Division conference.
CRYSTIAN MENDOZA / SPORTS EDITOR April 11 - Sarah Hauffen-Salgado, freshman OF for Rio Hondo College, sprints towards first base against Chaffey College in a South Coast Conference North Division matchup that would see the Lady Roadrunners come back to win the game after being behind by three for a majority of the game.
