It was a triumphant spring break weekend for El Paisano Newspaper editors, staff, and members of the Journalism Communications and Public Relations (JCPR) club after winning over a dozen awards from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ statewide conference. While attending the three-day conference in
Sacramento, the Rio Hondo representatives competed in a number of on-the-spot contest that consisted of different fields of reportage: print writing, photography, video production, and the use of social media. Several of the students attribute the club’s exceptional success at this year’s JACC conference to the new direction that the new advisor, Wendy Carrera, is taking the department. ”Professor Carrera has
been an instrumental driving force in reinvigorating the journalism program.” said Diego Crespo, El Paisano’s editor in chief, “Without her courage and convictions, the newspaper would not be where it is today. And the potential is still limitless. This was Crespo’s final JACC competition and he ended his amateur writing career on a high note, with a first place win in Critical Review, for his critique of the film “Jackie,” and a third

place win for newspaper layout. “The award was a pleasant surprise. It was my first front page layout, and I was trying my best to make it stand out. It paid off.” said Pete Escobar. Carrera succeeded the former advisor, John Francis, after he retired last spring. She has since been able to acquire El Paisano’s newsroom new equipment and expanded Rio Hondo’s broadcasting

58-year-old pilot Darrell Roberts was arrested late Monday night after deputies discovered him under the influence after making an emergency landing for his aircraft. As Roberts had attempted

Trump Launches Tomahawk Strikes Against Syria XAVIER ALATORRE Reporter xavier.alatorre1457@my.riohondo.edu
The United States bombed a Syrian air base Thursday April 6, after the Syrian government attacked its own civilians with chemical weapons. “Tonight, I ordered a targeted military strike on the air base in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched,” Mr. Trump said in remarks at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida Thursday night. “It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.” The president launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Al Shayrat airfield in Syria. The missiles were aimed at Syrian fighter jets, hardened aircraft shelters, radar equipment, ammunition bunkers, sites for storing fuel and air defense systems. The Syrian government was able to launch fighter jets from the airbase the next day. The chemical attack took place Tuesday April 4 in Idlib,
a northwestern region of the country. At least 80 civilians were killed in the attack. World leaders expressed outrage at the brazen slaughter of civilians. A UK official suggested that the incident amounted to a war crime. The attack strained relations with Russia. The Kremlin denounced President Trump’s use of force. The Russian military said that it was suspending an agreement to share information about air operations over Syria. Russian President Vladimir V. Putin called the strike a violation of international law and called it a significant blow to U.S.-Russian relations. The missile strike drew bipartisan praise from congressional leaders in the United States. “I think the president had the authority to do what he did. And I’m glad he did it,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) However, in 2013, McConnell warned President Obama against striking Syria after the Assad regime used chemical weapons in Damascus - an
attack that killed 1400 civilians. When presented with a plan for airstrikes, McConnell said in 2013, “We have been told that the purpose of these strikes is to deter and degrade the Assad regime’s ability to use chemical weapons … But let’s be very clear about something. These attacks, monstrous as they are, were not a direct attack against the United States or one of its treaty allies,” indicating that he would not support such an attack against Syria. House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) commented, “Tonight’s strike in Syria appears to be a proportional response to the regime’s use of chemical weapons.” “The crisis in Syria will not be resolved by one night of airstrikes,” Pelosi added. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “Making sure Assad knows that when he commits such despicable atrocities he will pay a price is the right thing to do.” However, some members of congress questioned the president’s authority to attack without
congressional approval. Libertarian Rand Paul (R-Ky.) blasted President Trump on Twitter. “The President needs congressional authorization for military action as required by the Constitution,” Paul said in a Tweet. The President’s stance on Syria and Assad has shifted. During Barack Obama’s presidency, Mr. Trump tweeted, “President Obama, do not attack Syria.” He sent out numerous tweets afterwards imploring the previous president to not attack Syria, even saying “many very bad things will happen” and that the “U.S. gets nothing” from fighting in Syria. During a press conference April 5, the President said, “My attitude on Syria and Assad has changed very much … that attack on children yesterday had a big impact on me.” It is important to note that the president’s ban on refugees from Syria remains in place.

Steve Bannon, President Trump’s Chief Strategist, was
removed from the US National Security Council Tuesday morning, April 5. Multiple sources have given differing reasons for Bannon’s dismissal, and who was behind his removal from the council. After the resignation of Michael Flynn as National Security Adviser, President Trump brought in Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster as the former general’s replacement. General McMaster was responsible for the shift in the organization’s structure, which included removing Bannon from his post, as reported by the New York Times. However, a source in the White House said the the president was responsible for
Bannon’s removal, according to CNN. So far, the White House has tried to downplay the restructuring of the NSC. A White House aide has said that the removal of Bannon is not a demotion, according to BBC. The aide stated that Bannon’s role within the council was to keep an eye on Flynn and to “de-operationalize” the NSC. Bannon’s appointment as a permanent member on the National Security Council back in January was seen as a risk that politicized foreign policy. The removal of Bannon from the National Security Council is seen as a return to a more traditional foreign poli-
cy-making decision structure. Back in February, regarding regulatory powers within executive agencies, Bannon wished to see the “deconstruction of the administrative state.” His appointment on the NSC explains one of his roles on the council. However, the question that still remains is why he was tasked with keeping an eye on Flynn. Flynn resigned as National Security Adviser after his meetings with a Russian ambassador had been revealed. Over the weekend, Flynn offered to testify to congressional intelligence committees and the FBI in exchange for prosecutorial immunity.

A man claiming to be a doctor was dragged off a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Louisville April 9. The incident happened because of the man did not want to give up his seat on the overbooked flight. “United airlines overbooked the flight,” Audra Bridges, a passenger that witnessed and recorded the incident, wrote in a Facebook post, along with a video of incident according to AOL
News. “They randomly selected people to kick off so their standby crew could have a seat. This man is a doctor and has to be at the hospital in the morning.” Bridges continued in regards to the incident, “He did not want to get off. We are all shaky and so disgusted.” The video posted online showed the man yelling as he was being grabbed by security and pulled out his chair causing his head to hit an armrest, as reported by The Huffington Post. He was then dragged down the aisle on his back as other passen-
gers recorded, one woman in a video yelled “My God, what are you doing? No, this is wrong!” She continued. “Oh my God look at what you did to him! Oh my God!” The company, after realizing their mistake, attempted to fix it by offering 400 dollars and a night at a hotel to anyone who would take a later flight, according to what Bridges told the Louisville Courier-Journal. When no one volunteer the price rose to 800 dollars along with the free night at a hotel, still no one would offer up their seat.
After that it was announced by staff that the computer would be selecting four random people to leave, two people left before the struggle with the man occurred. “After our team looked for volunteers, one customer refused to leave the aircraft voluntarily and law enforcement was asked to come to the gate,” a spokesperson for United said in a statement as reported by AOL News. Since the incident the CEO of United Airlines released a statement calling the event upsetting. “I apologize for having to re-accommodate these
customers. Our team is moving with a sense of urgency to work with the authorities and conduct our own detailed review of what happened,” United CEO Oscar Munoz said in a statement released April 10. Munoz said the airline is trying to reach the passenger to “further address and resolve this situation.”

JCPR was able to secure... two awards in the broadcasting medium. Eric Munoz and Malissa Myers, both JACC first time competitors, took third place in Video Story for their coverage on effect the flooded rivers had on the influx of homelessness in downtown Sacramento. Munoz procured another third place win for Video Story in the publication contest, where teams submit published work from the last year to be judged. During the award ceremony, Munoz’s elation could not be contained. When receiving his award, he hollered praise across the grand ballroom to El Paisano, and encouraged people subscribe to his YouTube channel. Munoz didn’t just see this award as a personal victory, but also as validation to the work the El Paisano staff has done, “The whole time I was worried about winning an award. When I finally won third place, I felt... more proud of my team and the work we had produced than the number of accolades we had.” Among the other first time competing students, Ramon Alvarado was a standout competitor, receiving an honorable mention for his work in Sports Writing, and a third place win in Social Media. Several of the El Paisano’s editors were also recognized at the event for their achievement in excellence in maintaining and improving El Paisano newspaper-print, digital, and broadcasting editions.

Soroptimist International of Whittier is honoring and naming five students from Rio Hondo College as winners of $15,000 in Live Your Dreams scholarships. This program focuses on assisting single mothers who are focusing on pursuing higher education dreams. This year’s winners were commemorated at a March 14th lunch. The winners are Charlotte Bannister, Heather Estra-
da, Sophia Tortoleto, Lorena Roknipour, and Leah Nolan. Bannister will receive $5,000 as well as receiving an advance to a regional competition. The other students will each receive scholarships of $2,500. All women who have won participate in the Rio Hondo College’s Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOP&S) and Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education Programs (CARE) that assist students who have language, social and economic disadvantages.

Tossed in the Bargain Bin: Payless to Close 400 Stores ANGELO TORRES Reporter

The discount retail shoe store Payless ShoeSource released a statement April 4 announcing it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and plans to close 400 underperforming stores in the US and Puerto Rico, including 24 locations in Southern California. Payless Shoesource was founded in Topeka, Kansas in 1956, with the mission of providing “fashionable shoes and accessory items at affordable
prices,” and has since expanded to over 4,000 stores in over 30 countries; shoes, ironically, the company can no longer fill. In the statement, Payless explained that the closures are apart of a plan to reconfigure the company by prioritizing attention to improving sales in their remaining locations, restructure the company’s debt load, and work toward expanding into Latin America. “This is a difficult, but necessary, decision driven by the continued challenges of the retail environment, which will only intensify,” says Paul Jones,
Payless Chief Executive Officer in the statement. “We will build a stronger Payless for our customers, vendors and suppliers, associates, business partners and other stakeholders through this process.” Payless’ announcement follows a number of other major retailers, including chains like Sears, Macy’s, JCPenney, and K-Mart, who have also announced mass closures of the first quarter of 2017. This comes after the release of a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, indicating job growth in March to be 98,000, just over half the predicted job
growth for the month. An article published by Yahoo Finance blames the failure in retail stores on online shopping alternatives, such as Amazon, a company that the article claims is destroying an “entire sector of the U.S. Economy.” Despite the huge drop in employment and the high rate of retail store closures, Amazon recently announced an initiative to hire 30,000 new part-time employees. Retail services have been shifting to online sources, more aggressively now than ever. Online retailers save money
by having fewer employees, on leasing and maintaining location property, and provide convenience to their customers; however none can compete with Amazon. Purchases through Amazon accounted for 53% of online purchases, leaving competing retailers online efforts in the dust. Payless ShoeSource reminds customers the closures will not interrupt online sales and stores performing up to expectation will continue to function as before. The Center of Bio-Ethical Reform made their annual twoday visit to Rio Hondo College to present their Genocide Awareness Project to students on campus. CBE came to Rio Hondo April 4 and 5 and displayed their multi-sided posters with images of unborn children and its comparison to genocide on the upper quad area of the campus. Around the area were signs that discouraged pro-choice ideals and members handing out pamphlets with more information. A representative of the CBE named Kevin, who did not give out his last name, said they chose Rio Hondo because they felt it was “a good spot” for the display, having presented at the campus for the last several years. They felt it was important to reach the students at Rio Hondo. While Kevin stated that they are a non-profit organization with no affiliation with the school, they were invited once by the Catholic Newman Club

here at Rio Hondo back in 2014. With such a controversial topic in the United States amongst college campuses, the CBE is protected by the first amendment in the constitution and were allowed to show their exhibit on campus with security near them. The CBE’s exhibit usually
draws mixed reactions from students, said Kevin, with some students being surprised at the display of images of aborted babies, and others students that challenge and openly debate them. On one of the days that the CBE was present, a student challenged a CBE member to a
discussion which had led into a screaming match by the end. While some conversations between students and members end like that, Kevin states that they are only here for one purpose. “The reason that we’re here is to just show people what abortion does to pre-born human beings, that it decapitates them,

Murder Scuicide at San Bernardino Elementary School ANGELO TORRES Reporter

Two adults and one student were killed and another student was left wounded following an apparent murder-suicide that occurred at North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino Monday morning. The shooter, 53-year-old Cedric Anderson entered a special ed class for students with intellectual disabilities, taught by his wife, Karen Elaine Smith. He pulled out a concealed .357 revolver and opened fire on Smith, killing her and injuring two students that were standing behind her. The student victims are an unidentified 9-year-old and 8-yearold Jonathan Martinez. Martinez sustained critical wounds and
was airlifted to Loma Linda Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. His classmate is currently hospitalized and is in stable condition. Police responded to reports of gunfire on the school campus and found two deceased adults, later identified as Anderson and Smith, and the two injured students. The school and surrounding schools were placed on lockdown during the investigation, and students of North Park Elementary School were temporarily transferred to Cajon High School for their safety. Students were later transferred to the Physical Education building of the Cal State San Bernardino campus, where they were able to drink water, use the restroom and play with toys provided by the college.
“We believe this to be a murder suicide. Happened in a classroom. Two students have been transported to the hospital,” Police Chief Jarrod Burguan updated on his Twitter. San Bernardino’s Police Capt. Ron Maass said Anderson was able to check in with school officials, despite having a gun on his person. San Bernardino Unified School District spokeswoman Maria Garcia confirms that despite “very, very tight” security, Anderson managed to “follow the check-in protocol,” by using a photo ID and signing in at the front office, and entered with the handgun. Anderson was reportedly estranged to Smith, and the incident stemmed from an alleged domestic dispute between the couple. “This is believed to be a
case of domestic violence,” read in email submitted to North Park. Despite the lockdowns of local schools, the incident is believed to be isolated to the North Park campus. “The children, we do not believe were targeted,” Maass said. It is unclear how many rounds were fired. Maria Ramos, whose grandson is enrolled in North Park, reported tried to pick up the child after hearing about the shooting, noting that he was shaken by the incident. “It was a typical morning and then chaos broke out,” Ramos told news station KABCTV. “[He] was crying. He’s scared.” “We want to minimize the trauma that not just our students, but our staff, have been exposed to,” Garcia said.
In 2016, 62 shooting were reported in the City of San Bernardino, a 41 percent increase from the year prior. This incident takes place less than two years following the 2015 San Bernardino attack, a terrorist attack by a US born Pakistani couple inspired by foreign terrorist groups that killed 14 people and injured 22, and brought concerns of gun control and regulations further into the public consciousness. The schools are confirmed to remain closed Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, but classes may continue afterward in an alternate location if the school is still an active crime scene.

Trump Signs To Kill Broadband Privacy Rules

Trump signed a bill April 3 to repeal the internet privacy rules implemented by the Obama administration. These rules gave consumers control over their data as communication companies would have to ask for permission in order to sell it or use it towards targeted ads. The data includes browsing history, geolocation, financial, and medical information. The director of the Federal Communications Commission, Ajit Pai, had announced his
efforts to revoke the rule when he was appointed director by Trump. Ever since, consumers have constantly stated that they are against this change. Before, during, and after the change is made, popular opinion remains the same. This is unwanted and the consequences of this helps broadband companies and hurt consumers. “There is literally no public support for this bill. Its only advocates are the nation’s biggest phone, cable and Internet companies. There’s no longer any question, if there ever was, whose needs this administration intends to serve. But people
everywhere are on high alert to the serious threat to the free and open Internet. And they will fight back,” says Craig Aron, CEO of the advocacy group Free Press. Companies like AT&T have monopolies over telecommunication and want to extend that reach to the internet in terms of what they provide for consumers. They cannot opt for a different internet provider if AT&T owns everything. This outrage has pushed AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon on the defensive. They have stated that the outcry is meaningless because these companies
will continue to serve consumer privacy. However, they now have no reason to inform consumers of their actions so what proof would consumers have to feel safe. In an article by TechDirt, these companies have been paying lobbying groups to push for this change. Groups like the League of United Latin American Citizens and the Asian Pacific American Advocates. They argued that data collection would help low income families. TechDirt also states that “When a reporter asks these groups why they’re supporting internet policies that run in stark
contrast to their constituents, you’ll usually be met with either breathless indignance at the idea that these groups are being used as marionettes, or no comment whatsoever.” The House, Senate, and the president are all working against consumers even though they claim to be the opposite. Their actions speak louder than any claim they have made in the last couple of months. Consumer outcry can only do so much if representatives won’t listen.

James Cook University in Australia reported that for the second time in 12 months coral bleaching is occurring along the Great Barrier Reef. Coral bleaching has occurred three other times in the past 20 years. It occurred in 1998, 2002, and 2016. This is
the first time that coral bleaching has happened in consecutive years. “The combined impact of this back-to-back bleaching stretches for 1,500 km (900 miles), leaving only the southern third unscathed,” says Prof. Terry Hughes, Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, who undertook the aerial surveys in both 2016 and 2017. “The bleaching is caused by
record-breaking temperatures driven by global warming. This year, 2017, we are seeing mass bleaching, even without the assistance of El Niño conditions,” Hughes continued. Coral bleaching happens when coral is exposed to higher than normal water temperatures. Heightened sea temperatures cause corals to expel tiny photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae. The loss of these colorful
algae causes the corals to turn white and bleach. Bleached corals can recover if the temperature drops and zooxanthellae are able to recolonize them. If temperatures do not cool the coral may die. The University of Technology Sydney’s lead reef researcher, marine biologist David Suggett, said that to properly recover, affected reefs needed to be connected to those left untouched by bleaching.
The Great Barrier Reef supports a diversity of life, including many vulnerable or endangered species, some of which may be native to the reef system. A recently published study in “Nature” stated that local measures can ultimately do little to protect the reefs from bleaching. Securing a future for coral reefs “ultimately requires urgent and rapid action to reduce global warming.”

As Apple products continue dominating the technological pop culture zeitgeist, issues still manage to present themselves in their products both new and old. Referencing specifically the Mac Pro, Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, had this to say. “If we’ve had a pause in upgrades and updates, we’re sorry for that - what happened with the Mac Pro - and we’re going to come out with something great to replace it.” Apple held an event unlike their traditional black curtain showcase events. That’s because Apple had no intention to reveal any new products or software. The event was a public update and apology for Mac Pro users who may feel ignored by the company. “We want to be as transparent as we can, for our pro users, and help them as they make their buying decisions. They invest so much in the Mac, we want to support them, and we care deeply about them. So that’s why we’re here.” said Schiller.
As a whole, Mac consumers quantify approximately almost 100 million users, with 80 percent notebooks to 20 percent desktop computers, according to Schiller. He also acknowledges the Pro customer database is filled with a broad spectrum of those with business and artistic backgrounds. “There’s music creators, there’s video editors,
there’s graphic designers — a really great segment with the Mac. There’s scientists, engineers, architects, software programmers — increasingly growing, particularly our App development in the app store. Bossland Loses $8 Million Lawsuit To Blizzard

As the competitive scene in video games continues to grow, the demand for “cheats” and “hacks” continue to skyrocket to “help” those combat against those with skill. A corporation that is at the forefront of cheating is the German company Bossland. Bossland has gained notoriety for creating fraud services for numerous of Blizzard’s games like Overwatch, Hearthstone, and Diablo 3. Needless to say, Blizzard is not happy with people using their services to gain an edge in competition, and thus the two companies have been engaged in court for a while in both the United States and Germany. Last week the US case came to a close in the California District Court with Blizzard coming out with an easy victory due to Bossland failing to represent itself. The court agreed that Bossland’s “hacks”
bypassed all of Blizzard’s cheat protection technology thus violating Blizzard’s DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). The court’s order reads, “Bossland materially contributes to infringement by creating the Bossland Hacks, making the Bossland Hacks available to the public, instructing users how to install and operate the Bossland Hacks, and enabling users to use the software to create derivative works.” The court awarded Blizzard several millions of dollars in copyright damages. Blizzard request for 42,818 violations within the United States was approved, totaling $8,563,600 with an additional $174,872 in attorneys’ fees. The court prohibits Bossland from marketing or selling any cheats within the United States. So hacks like “Hearthbuddy,” and “Watchover Tyrant” cannot be monetized in the United States for example. “Players of the Blizzard Games lodge complaints against cheating players, which has caused users to grow dissatisfied
with the Blizzard Games and cease playing,” the court stated before the ruling. “Accordingly, the in-game cheating also harms Blizzard’s goodwill and reputation.”
Events like these aren’t the first time Blizzard has fought and won in court against a cheat-maker. Blizzard went after World of Warcraft bot-makers MDY Industries in 2008 who
sold bots that controlled player’s characters which automatically did repetitive tasks such as killing monsters, loot farming, and turning low-level characters into powerful ones.

On January 2013, Nintendo announced that a new Legend of Zelda game was in development on their personal “podcast like” event simply called the Nintendo Direct. The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma proclaimed that the development team’s focus was mainly “rethinking the conventions of Zelda.” This many perplexed gamers as alterations can be great to bring fresh air into a franchise, but too many modifications can turn the game into something it is not. With a release date of 2015 for the Nintendo Wii U, fans waited patiently as the game got delayed multiple times that left many gamers wondering if the game was merely canceled. To much sighs of reliving, the game was finally named on E3 of 2016 as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. As for the release
date, that was not announced until the Switch was unveiled much later in the year. March saw the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild coming out alongside with the release of the Nintendo’s newest console, Switch as well as the previous console the Wii U. So now that the game has been out for about a month, how is it? Let’s find out. The story of Breath of the Wild is as simple as any other stories in the Zelda timeline. The main protagonist, Link is the appointed Knight of looking over the princess of the land of Hyrule, Zelda. Hyrule was a land of peace until one day the dark force named Calamity Ganon wreaked havoc on Hyrule. Link and Zelda teamed up to fight against the Calamity. However, Link fell in battle forcing Zelda to flee to save her life as well as his. Zelda put Link into a chamber and sealed it up with her magic so that Link can recover from his wounds. By

this time Calamity, Ganon has not only destroyed Hyrule but as also taken over the castle that looms over the land. Having no other choice, Zelda uses the last of her strength to seal Calamity Ganon and herself inside the castle to avoid any more catastrophe. One-hundred years has now passed, and Link has woken up to no recollection of his past and now must set off the reclaim Hyrule and defeat Calamity Ganon. The gameplay is one of the major changes to the Zelda formula as most Zelda games have players go from dungeon to dungeon defeating bosses till Link get the final boss battle. In the case of Breath of the Wild, the gameplay is similar to an open world game as it lets players chart their course and do whatever they want. If the player can see it, they could climb it and visit the area as nothing is blocked off with invisible walls. The game even tells players where Calamity Ganon is so that if the player chooses to, they could fight the final boss within the first hour of playing. Of course, there is still the typical open world game clichés like controlling towers to discover more of the map to random fetch quests, but it never feels like a chore to completing these events because players tend to get distracted by other activities that can happen along the way. An example could be a shrine, an event that holds puzzles or combat challenges that if completed can grant players a currency that can be used to upgrade Link’s
health or stamina. Weapons and equipment have all changed from other previous entries in the series. For one, Link can find bows, boomerangs, and even bombs within the first hour of the game, however, the tradeoff is that everything has durability and once pushed too far will cause the item to break forever. Some weapons have special properties, and perks that can make Link stronger as well has had higher base damage, so it is up to the player to prioritize their loadout to avoid breaking their best weapons before a big fight. All this also applies to shields as well. Link gains an item called the “sheikah slate” which grants Link abilities like stopping time and creating blocks of ice over water. While mostly used for puzzles, these skills can also be uses for combat or for just scaling the massive world. The environment plays a huge role in BotW that will force players to think and prepare for the journey ahead. Deserts or hot climates will harm link if he is overdressed just as the cold climate will harm him if he is underdressed. Players can also cook food with special properties to help Link survive as well. Rain also has the biggest impact of all as it tends to make Link slip when climbing making is traveling vertically much more challenging if not impossible. Plus, with rain comes thunder which if Link has ANYTHING metal equipped WILL cause a lightning bolt to jolt our hero. One of the best things in the
game that many reviews tend to skip is the Amiibo functionality in the game. Any Amiibo that a player scans will drop food for Link which is essential for keeping Link’s health full. If any Zelda series Amiibos gets scans, not only will food dropped but a chest will fall as well. This chest has a chance of dropping weapons, shields, outfits, or cosmetics from previous Zelda games. So, for example, if players want to dress Link up in the Tunic from Ocarina of Time, simply scan the Ocarina Link Amiibo and open the chest for a chance to add the outfit to Link’s collection. These particular items are exclusive to Amiibos only with no other way to unlock them making not only the outfits but the Amiibo treasured as well. Overall, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is defiantly the fresh breath of air the series needed after 30 years. While there are some significant problems with weapons breaking far too easily for my taste (the Dark Souls series is a perfect example of how to do weapon durability) and framerates drops happening way to frequently, it is only a small blemish what critics are calling a perfect game. As of the time of publishing BotW is sitting on a 97 on Metacritic with reviews giving the game perfect 10/10s and this reviewer is also following suit. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 5/5

“Work Hard; Stay Humble.” Faculty - custodian, Sergio Cabral, 60, is one of many to truly define to the quote above. He who always brings a helping hand to Rio Hondo College and their community. Three years as a custodian, Cabral had been granted an opportunity parttime here at Rio since a year of unemployment from 30 years of textile and paint inc. He was a supervisor for 20 years and had 25 employees under his watch at a company located in Pico Rivera called L.A Paints Works INC. He then spent 10 years as supervisor for 70 employees at another L.A Paint Textile INC. located in the City of Vernon. Being in control of 10,000 designs, color schemes and rotation of inventory, Cabral made sure that all the fabrics, textiles, and color scheme styles were set out for delivery. The 60 year old enjoys being apart of the Roadrunner family. There are times that will come up that

Yves Saint Laurent is causing controversy in France and around the world with their latest ad. The French ad campaign features women open-
ing their legs wide and sexy and bending over contemporary furniture and looking like they want it badly from behind. A French woman’s group called la feminise ma are calling for the campaign to be pulled. French people are known for their sexually
explicit ads and carefree living. The city of love has been home to many controversial ads over the years. The fashion industry has long been known for its skinny models in the 90s, such as Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Kate Moss, who still wears YSL today. Critics of the ad say that it implies that the women want to be raped, and are painfully thin in a time where fashion designers are crossing boundaries such as Alessandro Michelle for Gucci. He has put men’s and women’s clothing on the same Runway, a scandalous act that had been previously unheard. Bloggers are saying that it is extremely provocative and violent to be showing women in such nature. Anthony Vascaro’s, who is the new creative director, style is to create sexy and provocative clothing, and some are saying his new designs are pushing the boundaries. Protesters have camped in front of the flagship YSL store in Paris for three days and held up signs with the attached ads is question with the word sexist in French all over them.

Did not know a word of english but has learned little by little from friends, family, and coworkers. He got his education such as high school and a year of college done in Mexico. Invited for an interview to UCLA but due to the traditional mexican family, family obligations were taken in place, alongside work. He has four children, grandchildren which he helps take care of on free time and one dog chihuahua named peanut. Watching sports, doing usual house fixtures and being at home with family is a normal free time for himself.
“I love to play racketball with my family and friends on the weekend and I have taken up this hobby about 25 years ago” Cabral stated. No matter the time, day, or place Sergio is very persistent and loyal to his work. He said when it comes to his work he is very focused and will always stick to his word. A dream of his before his time comes would be able to travel to Europe and see a soccer game. Living a happy, stable, healthy life is how Cabral wants to be known for. “There are people you meet in life that create a positive impact, and Sergio is one of them. He makes himself available for inquiries, takes care of our lab, but best of all he has become a part of the El Paisano family. The Learning Center, located in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) offers quiet study space, study rooms, pre-printing of essays and tutoring in English, math, psychology, physiology, administration of justice, political science, Chicano studies and biology. Diaz’ new position helps with creating new workshops that would help students succeed. Some of the workshops he has to offer will be able to help students with time management, gain better study skills, note taking and other fundamental life skills. He was president of the Veterans Club on campus for many years, Diaz always wears his dogtags to express where he stands on veteran causes.
In fact, it was his idea for the flag tribute in the lower quad. When he was a student he used to seek regular help from the learning center, he’s proud of his position and the opportunity to pay forward all the help he received. Diaz is exceptionally passionate of his work in the LAC. He currently resides in Rosemead, California with his wife and two children. Diaz encourages students to visit the lab for whatever they need, he is ready to answer any questions. All students benefit from everything the lab has to offer but registration to the no-credit course is needed. The LAC is a “marketplace of knowledge” according to Diaz, “I strongly encourage students to stop by even if it’s just to say hello.”

Ralph Lauren is the latest company to openly fall from grace and close its once highly coveted Fifth Avenue Polo store. On a recent visit, a writer from Businessinsider.com (an Amazon company) went into the store and found overpriced polos that look like they came out of the same POLO ad circa 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000. The last popped collar hasn’t been seen since 2005, but the iconic American fashion house continued to ride its shortening wave. A real tragedy since buyers are just not visiting the famous Avenue like they used to, especially with Trump halting tourist flow with his travel ban, spending $3,000 a month for a spot on Fifth Avenue just did not make sense to continue. Analysts
predict 300,000 less international tourists will visit the State of New York this year and even though domestic visits remain strong, it takes four Americans to to spend what one international visitor would spend in the city that never sleeps. Retailers are shuttering doors and cutting jobs left and right as online giants like Amazon continue to soar. Lauren’s 2016 ending quarter saw a 12 percent fall from 2015. Ralph Lauren the brand and Ralph Lauren the designer are still both very rich entities, both valued in the billions of US dollars. The company is making big changes now in order to prevent huge losses or even bankruptcy later. Online companies offer free shipping, Zara makes a product and can have it in stores or online within days. Meanwhile, Ralph Lauren has
been making the same thing for years and when the industry has so many top tier designers and new cuts and celebrity endorsements changing the game, you have to move with the market in order to compete. Earlier this year Ralph Lauren cut ties with a former CEO who failed to live up to rebranding promises during his short business relationship with the company. To last this long in an ever changing business is a statement to the company, and with careful and strategic planning, such as going digital and letting go of a bit of ego in order to close the stores not making money, Ralph Lauren as a brand will continue to fight to stay afloat. Especially in a time where a new fashion line seems to open up to the masses via social media almost every other day.

Gazebos filled the mid and lower quad at Rio Hondo for its first ever music festival titled Riopalooza, an event for Rio Hondo students to show their musical talents on stage to the attendees. One problem it faced was that not many students attended the event at steady numbers. Even with clubs like Spectrum, Artists Creating Theater, Journalism Communications Public Relations club, and various others attracting students to their booths, not much could be done to keep a consistent crowd for the artist performing. Booths sold items like Wingstop, horchata/jamaica,
nachos, Hot Cheetos with cheese, pastries, tacos, and even offered face painting. Henna tattoos and a few other free activities kept the attention of the students that did participate. Another problem with Riopalooza was that the stage was placed right in front of the Learning Resource Building, a possible distraction for the students in the library who might have wanted to get some work done in peace. While there were no music complaints from any staff members, it did take a while for the first performances to start as the DJ played music for 30 minutes until it began. The first three acts that went up were Indigo State, Sandy and Danny, and Don David. Although the first few acts were really talented, they
were not enticing enough for students to go to the stage and enjoy the show. It was not until the next four bands where more students were able to finally get into the music. The Red Leslies played after a short intermission and their distinct sound had them stand out from the whole event. They started with a cover of one of The Growlers songs and the great vocals from the their lead singer, Luis Buenrostro Sanchez, captivated the small crowd that had finally gathered. Their 10 song set was the longest of the day and one of the most impressive, playing original songs before ending with the classic White Stripes songs, Fell in Love with a Girl. The next best sets came from

When Parra went up, it was much more surprising as her soothing vocals and her guitar playing made the event much calmer. The final band named Vulcan Death Grips, composed of Juan Arcos Jr., Erik Ramirez, Branda Nguyen and Gerson Diaz, was on par with

The Red Leslies in terms of talent and sound structure, having The Drums and Mac Demarco type of feel to them and an enjoyable set altogether. The only problem with the set was that it was the final set of the day at 7 p.m and while most bands would like to have the last set of the day, most students either went home or were in their final class of the day, leaving the crowd void of spectators. While the booths had success with students looking for food or drinks, the bands were definitely overlooked because of the time and date of event. If there was one thing to definitely improve on the event is to change the time and make it start earlier so the acts that played can have the recognition they deserve.

Mother Mare is a dynamic duo that consists of two talented artists: Robyn Maya, lead singer and guitarist, and Julio Quijano, back up singer, guitarist, and mixer. The two sing straight from the soul in hopes of tugging at the heart; one could connect with their music just the way they do. The best way to describe their music is if M83 and MGMT had a baby, it would sound something like this. For Quijano, this isn’t his first time ever playing in a band or even being in a crowd. He previously toured around LA with a band named Watch for Horses, they were even featured on KROQ “Locals only” section. So, it’s important to add he has an idea of how to make it in the music industry. One of the things that makes this band much differ-
ent from the others to him is that he has as much creative freedom as he wants, he even stated “When I met Robyn, I realized that I’m going back to what I originally wanted to do.” Seeing these two perform on stage is almost a show on its own without the music seeing them be so attuned with their music, you’d never guess that they’re just starting off. These two talented musicians crossed path at college while taking a music class together, and taking what knowledge they learned there and implanting it to there liking. But even before they decided to get a formal education when they were both children they loved to toy around with music and exposing themselves as much as they could. Robyn on the hand always envisioned herself being solo. Working with someone else
is a nice change of pace for her compared to working solo b/c, now she has a shoulder to lean on for creative help. She relies her the help of Julio as well to let know what she thinks would be good or not. Julio went on to say this about working with her “This is something really special and unique we have this chemistry”. The kind of rock that they are is the type that you would, put some headphones on and just drift away in. It’s relaxing and hearing this could just help you unwind after a stressful day, and escape the realities of the world. When you listen to music you want to connect with yourself more and Mother Mare will definitely help you do that. It doesn’t take to much to know that they put a lot of emotions into there music. Just being there and seeing the rawness of it live gave me that connection to the music.

Almost as if I understand completely how they felt. The way they present themselves while playing with an indie style that you don’t really get to see too often. While Robyn blows you away with an authentic voice. The inspiration they got from there name Mother Mare comes from all sorts of places. One being there obsession with space. With the word being the dark spots on the moon, they relate to more b/c they deem themselves to be night people as well. As well as the sea because of the flow of there music.
Robyn stated “We resemble deep outer space and the deep ocean too.” Much of the their inspiration is a kind of splurge of the moment kind of thing. “Every song is a different process”- “It just kind of happens you don’t try to make it happen you just, play around with some things”- “It’s all very flowy” said by Robyn. There is something incredibly gratifying about a story that seems to understands how to be complex. A lot of writers today try their best to craft a complex story, e.g. layered and specific, that they basically suffocate themselves and collapse under their own story details. The comic that’s able to correctly be complex is called Black Cloud. “Zelda was born in a world of dreams, and hers burned bigger than anyone had ever seen.”
This tagline, taken from the comic publishers website, sets the tone for the entirety of the series. This story starts out with Zelda and a mysterious origin; now running and hiding in our world. She does have access to travel to her former home, and will allow people short trips into it … for a price. We see in the issue how she tries to support herself on earth, and how she handles the mysterious past that stalks her. You can tell by the first half of the comic that the protagonist has an interesting reputation that’s known by everyone. Whether she’s
a hero, a scoundrel, or both, misfortune seems to follow wherever she goes; par for the course of those living in dreams. Within the first couple of pages she describes her world, “I’m from a place of stories, so big that they defined everything. People so committed to their stories they choose to live in them.’” The comic is written by Ivan Brandon and Jason Latour, who seem to be building a sophisticated world that is, so far, complimented well by the 1st issue artists Greg Hinkle and Matt Wilson. In their story there are different worlds ( described as dreams)
with the art style adjusting to whichever one we currently see. The series itself lives and breaths “weird”. Reality and imagination seem to always be at odds . We are exploring the world with a protagonist who knows what’s going on, but not exactly what she should do about it. The comic is visually vivid, casually drifting in between awe inspiring beauty and deathly horrifying imagery that can only be produced by a disturbed mind. The visuals, along with the writing, leave the reader in suspense and wonderment of what’s to come next.
Black Cloud has been so popular that it’s gone into reprints for the first issue. It’s available from image comics and can be picked up at a comic store or online.

Operating under the assumption that the audience is at least passingly familiar with the concepts of babies, “The Boss Baby” starts off as a legitimate riot. Director Tom McGrath (The “Madagascar” trilogy) extends imaginative visuals and a sense of entertainment suitable for the childish sensibilities of a movie starring Alec Baldwin as a talking-suit-wearing baby. Fantastical dreamlike sequences project what our protagonist child, Tim Templeton, sees when they’re exploring the world through the lens of unrestrained imagination. It’s not exactly high art but it fulfills its premise with commitment and imagery that will make you roll your eyes or giggle at the absurdity. It’s with great disappointment that I must report “The Boss Baby” drops all narrative steam like a baby drops a poop. Even at a brisk 98 minutes, the endeavor of suit wearing babies wears thin. Mind you, it’s not the concept that runs dry. Rather the film forgoes wacky narrative shenanigans to focus on generic
story economy. An underwhelming sense of stakes takes precedence over previous instances of suit-wearing babies strutting down office spaces and paraphrasing “Glengarry Glen Ross” with the immortal phrase of “Cookies are for closers.” There’s enough energy in the earlier worldbuilding moments to leave it with a decent watch once it hits Redbox. Particularly as the titular Boss Baby does the animated equivalent of an Aaron Sorkin walk-and-talk to exposit business information. The Boss Baby also works for a company called Babycorp, naturally. Babycorp is constructed like the futuristic presentation of Hannah Barbara’s “The Jetsons” cartoon. It’s a testament to “The Boss Baby” that it actually manages to inject humor into moments of admittedly sheer stupidity. Of course a baby wearing a suit and acting like a Wall Street stock broker is ridiculous. For the first act and further subsequent fleeting moments, “The Boss Baby” truly delivers on proving this baby is a boss. The finale culminates with a villain, cute puppies, and race against time. You won’t care but it’s there. It underplays the selling point of the movie about baby espionage
and sibling rivalry without any semblance of emotional payoff. The moments are sprinkled in there but they don’t have the building blocks to support them. What’s most disappointing is there is an inkling of an idea at play with the fundamentals of family and jealousy. When a baby joins a family, they do admittedly end up running the household with their most simplistic human desires lest a family fall under the rapture of their cries. At one point there’s even a discussion confronting whether there is enough love to be shared within a growing family (spoiler alert: yes, there is). The pieces are there for a surprisingly good movie. Instead, it’s a surprisingly disappointing one. If there is to be a sequel (and box office receipts may just prove there will be) maybe there can be a full on espionage exploration of the Boss Baby economic structures. As it stands, nothing makes sense. Alec Baldwin plays a talking baby – no, not the same one he plays on “Saturday Night Live” – one with actual business savvy and intellectual panache. Cookies are for closers and sadly “The Boss Baby” doesn’t earn them.

‘Power Rangers’ is Lackluster Fun

“Power Rangers,” the franchise that spawned new iterations for every generation since the 90’s, released its 2017 theatrical movie March 24, and the film has its hits and misses. The movie managed to create characters that are charming and interesting, but its problems come on later as the plot progresses. The story starts out with the main characters meeting and being chosen to be the Power Rangers just as Rita Repulsa, the villain of the story, rises again in an attempt to destroy the Earth. As the film continues we learn more about our characters and why they act the way they do and watch them grow. The plot is simple and a bit cliched, but it works and most of the good parts of the film come from the characters themselves. The characters in this film are the best part, they evoke the most emotion and are really the heart of the film and

RJ Cyler, the actor for Billy Cranston, really shines as the blue ranger and brought out something new to the character that is well done. The other great thing about them is they behave like teenagers, they do dumb things and they have atti-
tudes which is something the original series lacked. A problem with the movie is that the dialogue sometimes feels awkward or out of place, and sometimes the adult characters were not the best, especially when compared with the main characters. Another issue is the CGI
in the film was not the greatest, at its best it was passable and at its worst it looked bad. The exception to this was Alpha 5 whose update in this film was well done and along with help from the voice actor, the character was brought to life. The other thing was the film should have introduce the Power
Rangers earlier, it felt the film took too long to build up to the reveal, so it just felt flat. Aside from that, however, the suits for the characters looked good in the film during the action scene and fit the new look the film was going for. As for the side characters, they are done pretty well, with each character being given an update to their personality that made them feel different and fresh. Zordon, played by Bryan Cranston, is given a new look to him that looks cool and his characterization is changed in a way that makes him seem complex. As for Rita Repulsa, played by Elizabeth Banks, she is definitely the most eccentric character in the series, which at times clashed with the atmosphere the movie was going for. The film overall had its bumps, but was an enjoyable origin story for a recreation of beloved franchise that still to this day manages to bring joy to new generations. If you’re looking for a fun film definitely check it out.

Killing a Whitewasher : Ghost in the shell NOAH GARCIA Opinion Editor
It’s always satisfying to find meaning in a film, especially when you had no preconceived notions going into it. After watching the film Ghost in the Shell, I had my own personal realization about the film that i didn’t expect. This is the type of film which is crafted to be visually stunning but lacks any substance and depth. They build this world that is filled with so many finely crafted surface details, showing that they put a lot of effort into the specifics of the environment. This would be great if they had paired this with a story that was as developed as the world they show us. The characters and storyline fall flat and are only interesting in short bursts. There are themes discussing what it means to be human and technology itself, but they are lightly touched upon or barely even mentioned.
What we have is a stunning film with no depth. With no restrain on spoilers: Scarlett Johansson plays an asian woman who was captured by a corporation and turned into a white killing machine. If you’re unaware of what whitewashing is, it’s when someone takes a foreign cultural entity, neglects the part of the material that’s rooted in the original culture, and assimilates and changes it so that it’s more accessible to western (white) audiences. What I Found interesting about this film is that if you think about it; it’s having a asian woman ( foreign property) fight for her original identity( as in its ethnic and cultural roots), in which a corporation (hollywood) took away
from it. In no way did the filmmakers want to convey this message, but that’s exactly what I pieced together right after finishing the film. Now this meaning that I’ve cobbled out of my feelings from the movie in no way justifies the creative choices they made for it. It’s still a beautiful, dull movie that plays around with the theme of humanity but doesn’t actually accomplish delivering any messages about it. Nonetheless It does present an interesting perspective on the film which makes me respect it more than I had anticipated. Although if the movie does peak your interest, going back to the source material is always a must, rather it be the actualjapanese comic(manga) or the original anime.

Supermodel Kendall Jenner was involved in a Pepsi Ad that upset many of those watching. The Ad featured a protest with one cause, we see people of many walks in life joining together a cello player, photographer and ultimately Jenner. She sees the march pass by while she’s doing a photoshoot, her eyes meet with the cello player in a way advising her to join them. Jenner did so running through the crowd and reaching for a Pepsi can and walking forward to hand the police blocking the crowd, suddenly they all cheer. I can see why others are very upset about it. Protests can have the most peaceful intentions they ultimately end up being the opposite. The ad received so much backlash that Pepsi released this statement Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity,
peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are removing the content and halting and further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in that position.” Jenner wasn’t forced to do the commercial so why should they even apologize on her behalf. She’s a grownup capable of making her own decisions. I’m tired of hearing everyone make excuses for the Kardashian/ Jenner clan so what if they’re “famous”. They are human beings capable to receive backlash for their own actions. I’ve been reading on many social media platforms that she’s only twenty years old, she doesn’t deserve all of this. Maybe she didn’t realize the content would be taken out of proportion but she was there filming it, Jenner could’ve voiced her opinion and dropped no matter what

SPORTS UEFA Champions League returns to action with quarter-final first legs taking place this week

One of the fiercest competitions in European soccer returns to action April 11 when Italian giants Juventus will host Spanish La Liga runner ups Barcelona. Meanwhile Germany’s Borussia Dortmund will host the traveling French league leaders, Monaco, for the first leg of the quarter-finals in the UEFA Champions League. Only eight teams remain in the competition, with Atletico Madrid facing the 20152016 English Premier League champions Leicester City April 12 while Spanish giants, Real Madrid, will travel to Germany to face Bundesliga leaders Bayern München at the Allianz Arena. Bayern München is currently coached by former Real Madrid boss, Carlo Ancelloti,
so some familiar faces will be seen on the evening as current Madrid coach, Zinedine Zidane, took over Los Blancos while assisting the ladder only a year ago. Similarly, Toni Kroos of Real Madrid will be returning to face his former club after transferring from Bayern after a stellar performance in the summer of 2014 after winning the prestigious World Cup with his national team, Germany. Barcelona is keen to make a good impression in the first leg, as they barely survived the largest comeback in UEFA Champions League history after they won their second leg against France’s Paris Saint Germain after being behind by four goals in the last round. Barcelona needed a whopping five goals if they wanted to continue on in the competition all the while also
having to prevent PSG from scoring any goals of their own so as not to escalate the deficit due to the away goal rule which counts one goal as two when playing away from home. The Spanish side started the game off attacking PSG’s defensive line aggressively, and it only took Barcelona three minutes to open the scoreboard with Luis Suárez scoring a brace. It wasn’t until the 40th minute that Barcelona managed to get their second, and it was thanks to an own goal from PSG’s Layvin Kurzawa. Going into halftime with the score at 2-0, Barcelona had to pick up the pace and net at least another three goals in order to keep their hopes of continuing. Lionel Messi stepped up to the plate in minute 50 to deliver a penalty kick to make it a 3-0

game for the Catalonians. With Barcelona’s comeback looking very much possible, Edinson Cavani of PSG silenced the crowd in the 62nd minute of the game with a goal of his own forcing Barcelona to need to score three more goals in order to win the game. As the end of regulation time approached, it appeared all but over as Barcelona’s Neymar managed to pick up a foul in the left hand side of the 18-yard box creating a great opportunity to test the goalkeeper. The Brazilian’s brace was beautifully placed in the top left hand corner of the goal, leaving the keeper defenseless as the Spanish side quickly picked up the ball and prepared to keep on fighting until the last minute. Barcelona’s pressure paid off as PSG gave away another penalty kick, allowing Ney-
mar to step up to the plate confidently as he smashed the ball passed the goalkeeper to make it a 5-1 game with all but three minutes remaining. The Catalonian’s continued to pressure the French league leaders all the way down to the final seconds of the game when a cross from Neymar met the extending feet of Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto who barely managed to get a foot on the ball redirecting it to the top net as the stadium roared in what was the largest comeback in Champions League history. What seemed impossible was all but a simple challenge, as the beautiful game has the capability of pushing the best of the best to come back from the dead and continue to fight for the most prestigious award in European soccer.

Real Madrid hosted Atletico Madrid April 8 at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, Spain as the much anticipated and possibly season defining Madrid derby was the highlight of the weekends La Liga clashes, with some 80,000 in attendance. Real Madrid were the current La Liga leaders, with 71 points going into the game, but were only a slight two points ahead of runners up Barcelona, who had 69 points and looked to travel to face Malaga April 12 and were hoping Atletico Madrid could take away some points from Los Blancos. Nonetheless, Real Madrid still had a game on hand that they needed to make up so they have a possibility of
getting another three points that can essentially separate them by two games (6 points) if they win the rest of their matches. Yet, they will be looking to face Barcelona for El Clasico April 23 in what is known as one of the most viewed sporting events worldwide, with some estimated 400 million viewers from across the globe in a game that is sure to get temperaments flaring as both sides always give it their all when facing each other. The Madrid derby remained scoreless going into the half with only Casemiro of Real Madrid seeing a yellow card for a clumsy foul, other than that the game appeared to be evenly matched as both goalkeepers stood their ground. Going into the second
half, it only took Real Madrid seven minutes to open the scoring after Saul Niguez of Atletico Madrid gave away a free kick in a dangerous area allowing Toni Kroos to whip in a beautiful cross from the right wing towards the penalty area as Pepe leaped above the rest to get a solid header in to send the ball passed a defenseless Jan Oblak in the 52nd minute of the game. After the opening goal, the game calmed down drastically as Atletico Madrid sat back and chose to defend rather than focus on attacking. With little action between the goal and the closing minutes of the game, aside from a few substitutions from both sides. When it seemed all but over for Atletico Madrid a quick counter attack caught
Real Madrid’s defense off guard and Angel Correa snuck a through ball past Dani Carvajal and Nacho Fernandez leaving Antoine Griezmann one on one against Kaylor Navas and the Frenchman took his chance and managed to get the ball past the goalkeeper salvaging a point for Atletico Madrid as they tied 1-1. With the Madrid derby ending in a tie, it was the best possible result for Barcelona as they now had a chance to equalize Real Madrid’s 72 points if they were to get the win on the road against Malaga. Yet, Barcelona was unable to get the win against a 14th place Malaga who managed to open the scoring in the 32nd minute of the game with Sandro Ramirez, a former Barcelona player him-
self, scoring a brace off of an assist from Juan Carlos. The game went into halftime with the score at 1-0 with Barcelona struggling to make an impression on the evening. As the second half commenced, Barcelona manager Luis Enrique used two of his substitutions at once allowing Andrés Iniesta and Sergi Roberto to enter the field. A hot headed Neymar got a second yellow card and was given the red, thus ejected from the game leaving a struggling Barcelona with only ten men to finish off the game. What seemed all but over was surely so as Jony managed to secure Malaga’s win with a last minute goal off of Pablo Fornals assist securing Real Madrid’s position as La Liga leaders.

After a three game series against Pasadena City College the Rio Hondo College baseball team has an overall record of 16-13 and a conference record of 8-9. They end their series against Pasadena City College with a two game losing streak. April 8 the Roadrunners had a noon start time home game against Pasadena City College at The Jungle. In the top of the 2nd inning Pasadena City put some runs on
the board when left fielder Jared Esquivel singled in runner Shane Ortega. Esquivel later came around to score when lead off hitter Andres Kim drove him in. The score remained 2-0 in favor of Pasadena City until they tacked on four more runs in the top of the 5th inning. Hot with the bat Andres Kim hit a double to once again score in Esquivel. Kim came around to score when power hitting Alex Briggs hit a double in the left center gap. The runner on first from the play,
Jeremy Conant advanced to third base. The score was 4-0 until John Bicos changed all of the driving in Conant and Briggs with a 2 run single. After 5 innings the Rio Hondo baseball team was in a six run hole. Light was shed in the bottom of the sixth when Alex Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to bring in R.J. Romo from third base. The score was now 6-1 with only three innings left to play. Roadrunner pitching included Chris Velasquez taking the loss, Anthony Franco, and Edmundo Fer-
nandez combining to allow 12 hits and 8 runs. For Pasadena, Paul McAllister advances to 3-0 on the season while throwing 5 scoreless innings. In the top of the 9th inning Pasadena cashed in some insurance runs when Garcia singled in Andres Kim to score and also advancing Alex Briggs to second base. Shane Ortega hammered a single to score Alex Briggs. The deficit was 8-1 when the Roadrunners had their last at bats in the bottom of the 9th. Closing out the game for Pasadena City, Nick
Esparza earns himself a save pitching four innings allowing two runs. Esparza gave up one run in the bottom of the 9th when Chris Valdez grounded into a force out to bring around Nick De La Rosa. The final score was 8-2 as Rio Hondo looks forward to their final seven games of the season. Rio Hondo College will next host Antelope Valley College April 11 before traveling to face Oxnard College April 13.

The Rio Hondo College softball team went all the way to 10 innings before coming back to pick up their first conference win of the season against East Los Angeles College April 6 after a series of 10 consecutive losses. The Lady Roadrunners have endured a tough season so far, with a current overall record of 8-22 and 1-6 in conference as they next look to face Southwestern College April 8 for a doubleheader. East Los Angeles College opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with Ange-
lina Gonzalez getting a single while advancing to second base on an error by CF, getting an RBI as Nicole Zamora scored the first run of the game. Rio Hondo would respond in the bottom of the third inning with a run of their own as Jelissa Castanon grounded out to shortstop getting an RBI in the process as Alicia Olivas advanced to third sending Marissa Macias home to tie the game at 1-1. The Lady Roadrunners would gain a lead over ELAC in the bottom of the fifth inning after Loren Pichardo doubled, getting an RBI as Castanon scored unearned.
ELAC would respond in the very next inning as Griselda Vasquez got a double of her own getting an RBI as Gonzalez advanced to third leaving Zamora to score. Next, Destiny Avena singled getting an RBI as Vasquez advanced to third base with Gonzalez scoring unearned to give ELAC a 3-2 lead before Rio Hondo would respond in the bottom of the sixth inning to keep the game tied. Macias reached on a fielder’s choice getting an RBI, Karina Gomez advanced to second as Paige Aguilar scored making it a 3-3 game leaving Desiree Rhodes out at third.
The game headed into extra innings with both sides going back and forth. It went on to the tenth inning before Samantha Alvarado was out at first base after a sacrificial fly ball, getting an RBI as Vasquez advanced to second base while Alexis Lazaro made it home safely making it a 4-3 game for ELAC with Rio Hondo having the last chance to take the win. The Lady Roadrunners took advantage of their last opportunity to overtake ELAC, and Serina Castrellon started the inning off strong, getting a double. Next up to bat, pitcher Brenae Martinez, struck out as tensions filled
the atmosphere. Rhodes was next up to bat and was walked to first as Gomez reached on a fielder’s choice allowing both Castrellon and Rhodes to advance a base. The bases were loaded up for Macias as she singled getting two RBI’s as Gomez advanced to third base while both Rhodes and Castrellon made it home safely to win the game 5-4 for Rio Hondo College. The Lady Roadrunners will return to conference play April 11 against Chaffey College followed by an away game at Pasadena City College April 13.
