A series of community colleges including Rio Hondo attended the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) which last year was hosted at Cerritos College and this year in Sacramento California featuring workshops with experienced journalists. This event was a great opportunity for journalism students to network with like minded individuals. Winner Diana Juarez who won fourth place in on-the-spot opinion writing, and Zackary Mejia won second place in on the spot critical writing. “I honestly wasn’t expecting to hear my name called out. I’ve never written a newspaper article before, but I trusted Professor Carrera when she told me I should compete in something beyond editing,” said Juarez on winning last semester in on- the-spot opinion writing. “I was ecstatic about winning an award because it was

Rio Hondo’s Pizza and Politics took place April 13 with Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon of California State Assembly, and representative of the 57th district spoke at the event where Domino’s pizza was served. Calderon, who is the youngest Majority Leader in the history of California, explained the reason he goes to college events like Pizza and Politics is to give young voters in his district direct contact to their legislative representatives. While speaking at Rio he touched on many topics ranging from Planned Parenthood to Social Security, and listened for students political concerns. “Rather than waiting for you [millennial voters] to come to the legislature, come to the government, the legislature comes to you,” said Calderon in an article from Angelo Torres. He

Malissa Myers won Achievement in Excellence Award for Editor in Chief of El Paisano Digital, and third place for a video story. Pete Escobar won fourth place in News Judgement/Layout Tabloid. Diana Juarez won fourth place for Opinion Writing. Ramon Alvarado won for Honorable Mention Sports Writing, and third place for Social Media. “They think we’re stupid, like we can’t make decisions for ourselves. They want us to continue to be part of a system that doesn’t work for us, that doesn’t really cater to us. Yet we’re important when they want us to come vote for somebody who’s gonna perpetuate that system,” Calderon said. “In the end it’s
your future, you’re going to have to live in it.” Calderon encouraged students at Rio and anyone else living in the 57th district to contact him with their concerns and is expected to continue doing events like Pizza and Politics throughout the district.
The Rio Hondo College Computer Science club is traveling to Taiwan for a study abroad program with the chance to share American, as well as Latino, culture to Taiwanese students in the summer of June 2017. Students will be raising money in through different platforms they will be holding in the lower quad area. Any donation given will go towards providing Rio Hondo students with a once in a lifetime opportunity to broaden their education through a cultural exchange experience. The fifth annual ‘A Taste of Rio’ took place April 28, and was a day where members of the community enjoyed food and drinks while financially supporting Rio Hondo students. The sold out event had a variety of restaurants and celebrity guests, including Senator Tony Mendoza, and school president Teresa Dreyfuss. The occasion was considered a hit, with delicious food being served, and the money raised went towards the Rio Hondo College Foundation Scholarship. The biggest contributions made were through the Fund-a-Scholarship Drawing. All profits of a $100 dollar donation price ticket going to the foundation, which has given out out 150 awards, containing 100,000 dollars in scholarships. This event has helped many people in the past, including student trustee member, Brandon Pablo Leon, who said, “This is a great event, students really benefit from this, I’ve gotten scholarships from this so I know for me it really helped.”

The Rio Promise had its official announcement and launch at the RHC Campus, May 4th. The program provides free tuition, priority registration, and a comprehensive educational plan for graduating High School seniors. Students that are eligible for this program are from the local School district. Registration requirements includes: 2017 Freshmen registration in the fall, status as a fulltime Student, Enrollment in English/Math courses and a FAFSA/Dream act application completion and submission. Board of Trustees president Edith Garcia stated that, “The number one deterrent for them advocating for college in their home was their parents thinking that they could never afford to send them to college… we are making sure, that regardless of income, we are opening the doors to education and that’s exciting.” The Rio Promise is a program that will try to give students with various economic backgrounds education, as well as build a strong foundation for their careers.

RHC Won Big at National Speech and Debate Tournament CORBIN BOONE Reporter

Rio Hondo College’s Speech and Debate team attended the National Phi Ro Pi Tournament on April 25 with a team consisting of eight representatives. Grant Tovmasian, coach of the team, supported the representatives of RHC alumni consisting of Melissa De Leon, Patricia Hughes, Jonathan Kaldas, Kevork Abechian, Rodolfo (Rudy) Antonio Juarez-Pinedo, Tyerra Boyd, Summer Gomez, and Saul Garcia. The tournament took place at The Sheraton Hotel. The tournament featured a variety of types of debate, such as dramatic interpretation and platform speeches. In the end, the team brought home three trophies consisting of one silver and two bronze. This week long tournament gave Rio Hondo a national title.
Ryan Scheckler, professional skateboarder, commenced the Scheckler Foundation which involved a “Skate for a Cause” event that was started after Scheckler’s empathy for a young fan. Casey was the name of the fan who wanted to meet Scheckler as he said, “It started because I met this girl Casey who had Leukemia when I was sixteen.” The diagnosed girl influenced efforts to create a type of make-a-wish foundation to support people with causes similar to Casey’s. The first day was full of enthusiasm and fun while many, including handicapped athletes, showed off true skill in the art of skateboarding. The numerous amateur and professional skateboarders skating together for one cause highlighted the greatness of the event all because Mr. Scheckler’s efforts.

Rio Hondo Welcomes New Chemistry Professor

Dr. Garima Garg is a newly appointed full time faculty in Mathematic and Sciences Department at Rio Hondo College. She will be teaching Introductory Chemistry and Organic Chemistry starting Fall 2017. Garg is married, and is a mother of two beautiful kids. Academically, she received her Doctorate in Agricultural Chemicals in 2006. She was a visiting Post-Doc Fellow at University of Southern California (USC) for a year. Garg is joining Rio Hondo College with both academic and industrial experience. She has taught various chemistry courses from Introductory Chemistry to Organic Chemistry at various college districts (Orange Coast, Riverside and Mt. San Antonio College). In addition, she taught at Southern California Institute of Technology (SCIT) in Anaheim--a fast paced three year engineering
understands the concept of effective college teaching. League Of Legends: Mid Season Invitational 2017

League of Legends’ Mid Season Invitational concluded on April 21 with the Korean Kings in SKT winning another international event.

Riot games hosted the Mid Season Invitationals for their popular MOBA game League of Legends with SK telecom T1 winning the tournament. MSI is an international tournament which brings together the top team of each region of the world to compete for global glory. SKT are the reigning champs of MSI while also besting the korean region. They stood as the favorites of the whole event and did not disappoint. The rest of the field, however, was a bloodbath. The tournament spanned the course of five weeks from the 28 of April to the 21 of
May. The other four major regions in North America, Europe, China, and Taiwan brought in their contenders in Team Solo Mid, G2 Esports, Team World Elite, and Flash Wolves respectively. TSM and FW started off in the play in stage where eight other teams from less competitive regions fought for the two spots available. These other teams have consistently failed to make top finishes on an international level and, therefore, do not get a bi vs the other regions. TSM and FW defeated the lesser teams who climbed up the bracket, but were not out quite yet as they had a second chance into the next stage. The two teams that faced
off for the final spot were Gigabyte Marines from Vietnam and BAU Supermassive from Turkey. Gigabyte Marines defeated Supermassive in a 3-1 match with superior team play and game knowledge. GAM was formerly part of the LMS region with Taiwan, but was later excluded due to travel issues. Their history, however, gave GAM experience with a major region. Their team development showed this tournament, as they were not afraid to play aggressive and utilize vision on the map. Supermassive did take one game with their own aggressive plays, but was hard fought by GAM and the knowledge they had. Moving into the group stage; SKT, G2, TSM, FW, WE,
and GAM played a double round robin where each team plays each other twice. The top four teams in this stage move on to the final knockout stage. SKT, as the favorites, dominated the bracket 8-2 with WE trailing with a 7-3 record. The Korean Kings faltered to the Korean Killers in FW, but continued on. WE also managed a win a game against SKT, but this match had no weight in the standings as both teams were guaranteed first and second. The final knockout stage involved the semifinals and finals of the tournament. SKT were pitted against the infamous FW. FW had a record of 4-2 in matches against SKT throughout their international runs. FW is the only team
with a positive record against a korean team, let alone the best korean team. SKT are the reigning MSI and World champions and now have to face their international rivals. This did not prove to be a challenge, however, as SKT took a decisive 3-0 victory against FW. In the first game, FW did give SKT a challenge as they took an early lead, but SKT found the teamfight they needed to shut down FW and close out the game. On the other side of the bracket, G2 defeated WE 3 to 1. Fans expected WE to defeat G2 as they had a superior record and showing throughout the tournament. G2, however, pulled out all the stops as they impressively dominated the series. The mid laner, Perkz, was especially outstanding as he dominated his lane, allowing his team to apply pressure on the map. In the final match of the tournament, SKT vs G2, Europe had finally made it into an international for the first time since 2011. They had disappointed in last years MSI as well, so this is a redemption story to their fans. They put up a good fight against SKT, but were beaten in a 3 to 1 score. As much as they have improved and, in some cases, over performed, SKT stand as the reigning MSI champions two years in a row. They also gain a top seed in the upcoming World Championships where many of these teams will meet again for the final international tournament of the year.

Air Force Academy Cadet 1st Class Hayley Weir and Professor Ryan Burke developed a goo like substance that can lighten existing body armour but also offer the same protection. Through over a year of research and multiple attempts to get the right materials, the pair finally got it right. Weir first began creating a material that could stop a bullet with epoxy, Kevlar, and carbon fiber as part of a chemistry class project it 2014. Her intentions were to produce a material that could stop bullets without shattering.
An advisor gave her a suggestion to swap the epoxy for a thickening fluid that hardened when it tried. After switching majors from materials chemistry to military strategies she then teamed up with a military and strategic studies professor at the academy Ryan Burke. The former marine, Burke, knew what it was like to wear bulky body armor and became very interested in Weir’s project. Although the science behind the material is not new, the previous studies had not developed a successful prototype. Therefore, Weir and Burke began work during 2016 using the academy’s firing range, weapons, and high speed camera. Burke also contacted the Marine Corps
who provided additional testing materials. To make the substance, Weir would use a KitchenAid mixer and plastic utensils. After mixing, it was placed in vacuum-sealed bags, flattened to a fourth of an inch, and inserted into a swatch of Kevlar. The first tests began with using a 9 mm pistol and was not very successful. The bullets kept going straight through the material. They then reconstructed the layering pattern and returned to the firing range in early December. After Weir fired on the material Burke reviewed the video footage and observed for the first time their material stopping the bullet. In 2017, they traveled to the Air Force Civil Engineer
Center to present their works and also perform tests. The material was able to stop at close range a 9 mm round, a .40 Smith 7 Wesson round, and a .44 Magnum round. Impressive enough, the massive bullet of a .44 magnum is used to hunt elephants and its was stopped by the first layer. Results from the tests certified the material to be labeled as a type 3 body armor, The impressive results showed that the greater the force impact the greater the hardening effect the material produced. The model that Weir and Burke created uses 75% less fabric than standard military armor. The material also has potential use for protective lining in vehicles and aircraft
as well has tents to protect the occupants inside from gunfire or shrapnel. It could also protect emergency responders that risk themselves in active-shooter situations. While the eventual use of the material is not certain, the US Army and Marine Corps are looking for ways to lighten their body armor for their use. The average weight of body armor currently is 27 pounds. Along with body armor, the average total weight carried by Marines is 117 pounds. The future use of the goo substance looks bright as well as provide a lightweight and sturdy protection for civilians and soldiers alike.

hroughout the 2016-2017 school year, a variety of plays, art shows, concerts, and events took place on the Rio Hondo campus. The Theater Department touched the hearts of many with hilarious plays like “Museum,” and more deep, meaningful ones like “The Laramie Project,” and “The Vagina Monologues.” Rio’s art gallery provided student, outside, and faculty artists with a foundation for their work. The Dance Department brought out talent among Rio students with productions including “Fast Forward,”
and “An Evening of Ensemble Dance.” Not only did the Wray Theater host many of these events, it also invited a number of notable speakers throughout the year to share their knowledge and experiences with students, especially at the most recent “Writes of Spring” festival. Events like these are extremely important, because they bring the student’s at Rio together and turn the campus into a Community through art and culture.None of these events would be made possible without the dedication of Rio’s students and support of the instructors that guide them, and the photo’s that follow highlight the student’s and instructor’s incredible work throughout the 2016-2017 school year.

‘#ILoveRioHondo’ Winners of the “ILoveRio” contest share their experiences
The Rio Hondo video contest gave students the opportunity to utilize their video production skills to tell a story that explains why they love Rio for a chance to win a cash prize. Chow mentioned that he wanted to approach the video with a different angle, in a way that allows the viewer to see Rio through the point of view of a student. “I wanted to grab differ-

ent students that are associated in the creative process… and I wanted to get their perspective on Rio Hondo. Those people are acting like the quarterback and the other people [watching the video] are piggybacking off what they experience,” explained Chow. After finding out he won first place, Chow wanted to give back to the people that helped bring the video to life, “The reason I wanted to win the contest was mainly for these guys. Not only to make their mark on campus, I wanted to split the winnings with them. [They] were the backbone of this project, so that’s one of the main reasons.” Chow is currently working on a project to promote artwork in whittier, and can be contacted via Instagram at @artinwhittier.

Jerome Pantaleon, Second place winner, is a Business Marketing major at Rio who has always been a fan of video production. Pantaleon said he wanted to “tell a story within the video” to motivate and encourage others to visit and attend Rio. Pantaleon’s video consists of things all over campus like buildings and fellow roadrunners, showing us everything the school has to offer. “The video itself contains things around Rio Hondo College like the buildings, the people, the offices and stuff like that. I wanted to capture [the audience’s] attention right away.” Pantaleon explained. A 16 by 35 Canon 5DSR with a wired lens was Pantaleon’s choice of equipment, and to help him maintain stable shots, he used a Glidecam 4000. He started making videos with an iPod as a hobby, but as time went by, he was hired to make videos and take photographs. Pantaleon was surprised to find out he was one of the winners in the contest, “I’m pretty surprised that I did win… I was watching other peoples videos and was like ‘damn, this is really good.’ I felt like mine [didn’t have] good content. I wanted mine to be different and unusual… I guess it worked out for me.” Pantaleon received $150 for his second place triumph. You can contact him via Instagram at @delacruzproductions.
Just about to complete his second semester, Brayan Altamirano’s dream to become a cinematographer is underway now as a student at Rio Hondo College. Altamirano was the third place winner of the #ILOVERIO competition that basically gave those who participated a chance to express their thanks for the college. Altamirano said that Photojournalism 110 helped him gain the information he would’ve never known. The competition caught Altamirano’s attention because he previously hadn’t seen anything around campus that related to film. He wanted his work to be recognized, and he definitely dealt with hardships while filming, but he continues to do what he loves. Altamirano loves Rio for the many resources the campus offers to help him within his own career. He states Rio Hondo College is a “community that promotes your education.” This isn’t the first time Altamirano has been recognized for his videos, the city of El Monte acknowledged and recognized him for his work in video production, and they later hired him. Altamirano aimed for first place, but didn’t never had a preference. “As long as I place, that’s what matters,” Altamirano said. IS BATMAN BAD FOR GOTHAM?

Is Batman good for Gotham City? That’s a loaded question. As it stands, Batman is a symptom of Gotham. Bruce Wayne had his parents shot to death in front of him by a mugger, succumbing to the worsening economic conditions of the city. Given a variety of origins and mythos, the mostcommon trait of Gotham was that it was always in trouble. Time passes, technology evolves, people discover new ways to fit into a constantly changing society. Staples remain, such as symbols of power, virtue and fear. Batman represents each one of those to different citizens in his city. Through the rise of Batman, and to paraphrase Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” also brings a sense of escalation. “We use semi-automatic, they buy automatic. We wear kevlar, they buy armor- piercing rounds. And you’re wearing a mask, and flying off rooftops.” This mentality eventually brings about what this writer considers to be the most horrifying villain in all of literature: The Joker is a monstrous being that has more in common with hellspawn than a man. He exists only because Batman exists. Every life taken by the Clown Prince of Gotham leaves Batman feeling responsible. But in the conditions of Gotham, how can any one man be responsible for so many? Bruce Wayne takes that responsibility upon himself. It’s not a perfect fundamental code but the essence of Batman is more than just beating criminals to a pulp. We only see glimpses of it in the larger Batman mythos, as these tales are mostly confined to him tracking down costumed criminals and stopping some master plot. The idea behind Batman is to help those who need it, even if he’s hated for it because it’s the right thing to do. The death of Bruce Wayne’s parents may not have directly killed Bruce himself, but it deprived him of a life that he’ll never understand. To live after a loss such as that will forever change who you are and what you believe in. So as Batman, he helps the criminal justice system. As Bruce Wayne, he can help other orphans, as we see in “The Dark Knight Rises,” when he gives Wayne Manor to the kids from a local city shelter. He also throws fundraisers to continue helping the economic struggles of the inner city. So is Batman good for Gotham? In a world as mad as his, Batman is the defining good for Gotham.

The biggest point I’d like to make is that Batman is by no means a bad super hero, and by extension his purpose to help his fellow man is very admirable. But he is not helping Gotham the way he could be. Bruce Wayne is using his company’s money to buy items personally. An embezzler with a good cause is still an embezzler. While he could be using his resources to help others as Bruce Wayne, he goes around spending money on expensive toys; turning Gotham into his personal playground. All his tools, cars, machines, weapons, even his lair are funded with money that could be put into the city. A city, its people and the criminal justice system is not a rich person’s playground to work out their aggression. He needs deep psycho logical help, and working out his issues by punching bad guys is not going to satisfy him in the end. What Gotham needs socio-economic reform at the lowest levels. Wayne could be using his money to help in-state social programs and reinvigorate Gotham businesses. A city that has consistent problems with criminals needs to attack the issue at the root rather than the short term solutions of crime fighting. The entire city is under the childish whims of a rich billionaire who is the prime example of someone who has too much money: affecting and controlling others through his money The city is so corrupt he could be funding the police, law firms and the city to combat the criminal element. And as a master detective he could help with police investigation, and he would know who to trust when appointing people to positions of power and trust. The lower level criminal element could be stopped at its source rather than stalled. In the Dark Knight, as mentioned in the pro-side, Gordon says that Batman is so busy that he doesn’t even have the time to answer the bat-signal. How effective are his methods if he’s still fighting crime? He destroys half the city (repairs never mentioned), invades people’s privacy (through accessing everyone’s phones to find the Joker) and it’s never resolved. Although his war on crime is helpful against those who are too dangerous for the police, at the end of the day he isn’t solving anything. On the point, although batman is effective against the master criminals, he could be working on solutions to help the criminal element, whether it be funding laboratories to cure them of their powers, better security for jails and asylums, or helping to create Gotham into a kind of environment where the villains aren’t made in the first place. Although he is helpful and has good intentions, in the long run he is not helping Gotham to its full potential.

A Quick Flashback to Rio RHC Women’s Soccer Team Crowned 2016 South Coast Conference North Division Champions CRYSTIAN MENDOZA Sports Editor

Rio Hondo College’s Women’s Soccer Head Coach, Jennifer Tanaka, helped lead Rio Hondo College to their third consecutive championship after winning the South Coast Conference North Division while winning the previous two Foothill Conference titles in 2014 and 2015. Along with the Lady Roadrunners three-peat, six of Tanaka’s players will also be transferring to multiple universities across the United States where they will continue pursuing their academic goals while playing at the next level. The season proved to be another succesful one for Tanaka, who closed out the season for her team with an overall record of 14-2-5 and a conference record of 5-0-3, as the Lady Roadrunners tallied 56 goals in 21 games before falling out at home 2-0 against a tough San Bernardino Valley opponent in the Second Round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. After another great season, six Lady Roadrunners would recieve offers to continue playing soccer at the university level. Those six players were Zaira Hernandez, Melissa Gonzales, Erika Lizarraga, Daisy Gallegos, Gracie Lopez and Jenny Garcia.

Ending their season with an overall record of 10-29 and a conference record of 3-9 under Head Coach Bianca Urquidi after a tough season, the Lady Roadrunners had something to be proud of after their starting pitcher, Brenae Martinez and their second baseman, Tiana Rodriguez were awared AllSouth Coast Conference Honors. Martinez earned a second team honor while Rodriguez was awarded an honerable mention. Martinez had 37 appearances and 205 2/3 innings, leading all of Southern-California, while totaling nine wins and tossed 23 complete games. Rodriguez was the Lady Roadrunners primary lead off hitter and compiled a .315 batting average. She led Rio Hondo with six doubles, 13 walks and 17 runs on the season.

Rio Hondo College’s Baseball team ended their season with an overall record of 19-17 and a conference record of 11-11. The Roadrunners managed to score 211 runs in 36 games, with a .281 batting average and .371 on base percentage under Head Coach Mike Salazar. Rio Hondo College’s baseball team ultimately lost their playoff hopes after losing two out of their three games against Chaffey College in their three-game series that started April 25, only winning their final home game of the season April 28. Seven Rio Hondo Roadrunners earned postseason honors and were named All-South Coast Conference North Division with first team selections including Sophomores Brady Carlson (SP), Anthony Franco (RP), R.J. Romo (1B) and Randy Buenrostro (OF) meanwhile Chris Velasquez (SP), Danny Marquez (C), and Gabe Chavez (INF) were second team picks.

The Rio Hondo College Men’s Basketball team is now coached by Steve Johnson after Mike Lowe stepped down. The former Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball wrapped up a 68-144 overall record with the women’s team and ended his first season coaching the men’s basketball team with an overall record of 9-19 and

The Rio Hondo College Men’s Water Polo team earned the No. 4 seed thanks to their 3-3 conference record, qualifying them for the South Coast Conference Championship tournament. The Roadrunners would go on to face No. 5 seed Chaffey College, with a win granting them into the semifinal matchup against top seed Long Beach City College. After a tough start to their season, the Roadrunners closed out their overall record at 14-17.

Rio Hondo College’s Womens Tennis team, coached by Karen Unger, had all three of their doubles teams qualify for the Calif. Community College Tennis State Championship. The Lady Roadrunners finished their season with an overall record of 5-10 and a conference record of 2-2. VICTOR LOZANO / REPORTER Rio Hondo College Beach Volleyball team gathered together for a photo alongside their teammates who will be going on to play volleyball at the next level this upcoming Fall.
The Rio Hondo College Women’s Beach Volleyball team saw three of their players recieve scholarship offers to continue playing volleyball at the university level. Those three players were Rachel Bustillos, Paula Alferez and Carleigh Cruz. Bustillos is a two-year sophomore indoor and beach volleyball player will be transferring to Bethel College in Kansas and will continue playing indoor volleyball at the next level. Teammates Alferez and Cruz will both be transferring to Hope International University and are both excited they will get to have each others support as they begin their new journey. Head Coach Teddi Esko stated,”The signing days are one of our highlights with our program, it just shows all the hard work the girls have done here in the classroom and on the court is paying off.”
