November 16, 2016 is the most recent testament to America’s love of the underdog. It’s also a day that will live on in infamy should we allow it’s most recent scandals to define our lives. For the first time in a long time, born out of strife and contrary to popular belief, we are finally in a situation where we find ourselves on the step of true growth shall our minds permit it. Rather than equate America to her powers that be, we should recognize the American attitude as one that is free from entitlement. Her unique affair with freedom is the very thing that has made her beloved to the international community. People come here because the surreal is so real, as there’s no shortage of dreams to be had and pursued. America, as a place, loves her underdogs and favors the man or woman who has grown from nothing, as they carry themselves with true grit wherever the competition will allow them to venture. For what is this place if not a nation built on not kneeling nor kissing the ring, civil disobedience, and battles. We were built upon the pride associated with winning brazen and red-handed, rightfully bearing arms. We clamor like the crowd that cheered Rocky on in his bout against Creed or salute the New York state of mind in the streets where hustlers on the corner bet those grants with the Cee-lo champs. We are infatuated with any place where the stakes are high. We are accustomed to nothing less than having to perform miracles whether they be on ice, or midway across the Pacific. It is only here, in America, where with true hard-headedness, that our people will not take a liking to being taught lessons, as ignorance is forever bliss while they are in vehement pursuit of the happiness that they have been told is theirs. Forever blind to the prospect of failure. It is here, where pupils will look you in your pupils raise arms but not ask questions, get rich and die, rather than not having tried. To be belligerent in the
hopes of being recognized, that is what it means to be unapologetically American, and by nature, an underdog. It’s for this moment, that though the chips be down in our current circumstance, that we should hold this to be self-evident and true, maneuvering as best we can with a step as “steady as time, and an appetite as keen as death.” That despite the divisive rhetoric and moral embezzlement, we remain our diverse and inclusive selves. If there’s anything that America has stood for, it’s for the diamonds in the rough and the roses that grew from concrete. The people that made something out of nothing. The ghetto and disadvantaged alchemists that turned nothing, into something. In these most tumultuous of times, on the cusp of actuality and equality, we should attempt to realize that there is the same strength as in being discounted as there is in numbers. As a nation, we should resolve to attain a world where we, as the underdogs, are more celebrated and better represented than we are now. A world where we can sleep as peacefully as Martin slept on the same night he had a dream, no longer having to worry that the ones in charge, are out of touch with what they once were like us, counted out and put down. If America loves her underdogs, and we say that we deserve more, then it’s about time that we do more than we say.

At RHC’s student union on November 7th, senate seat candidate David Hildebrand spoke to the Rio Hondo Community about the issues Californians face, his campaign stances on said issues and the problems he has with the current state representatives. Hildebrand introduced himself to the crowd as a son of a union carpenter, someone who served in the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign, a current union member, and an experienced legislative analyst. David Hildebrand defines himself as an everyday citizen, stressing that he isn’t a

businessman or a ‘traditional politician. During his campaign speech he preached on how he thinks that modern day politicians dictate their political actions on self preservation or corporate favors, rather than devotion to the everyday citizen. “If you look at Feinstein(CA Senator Dianne Feinstein) donors and put a list next to Kevin De Leon’s they are exactly the same. You can’t vote someone into office that already has proven to you that their true constituents are corporations.” Hildebrand’s major talking points were on instituting single-payer healthcare for all, ending citizens united, tuition-free college, democratizing and cleaning

up unions, producing 100 percent renewable energy, a higher minimum wage, taxation based on economic standing, ending mass Incarceration, and ending right to work laws. While introducing his plans of establishing a country supported by green energy, by training current people working in the fuel industries through free trade schools, he dug into a prime staple of his argument against the current actions of politicians “You won’t hear the regular politicians say all this is tied together because they want to work on incremental policies. ” He repeatedly brought up the idea that the government has been spending a lot of time, money, and energy on short term solutions that he feels doesn’t work or aren’t efficient enough. After dictating the majority of his points, Hildebrand took questions from the audience, concerning the function of ICE, insurance policies, health care, gun control, the future of the country’s economy and which policies should be implemented to foster a more economic future. After a full hour of the forum, David thanked the Rio Hondo Pre Law Society for hosting, and the community for listening, advising them to visit his website, DavidforCalifornia.com

“Smash-and-Grab” Robberies Across San Gabriel Valley and LA County

Small businesses across the San Gabriel Valley and the LA County were robbed Thursday, November 2nd. There was a total of 20 reports from restaurants in San Dimas, Azusa, Monrovia, Duarte, Glendora, and West Covina. The incidents are believed by local police to be all connected since they occurred between 1:00 am and 4:30 am Thursday. From all reports, glass was shattered and mostly money was stolen. Investigators are calling this the “smash-and-grab” incidents. Affected by the crimes was Five Guys Burgers &
Fries in the West Covina and Azusa location. West Covina mall security noticed the broken glass door and called the general manager of the store. Shift lead Emelyn Lozano of Five Guys was shocked to discover what had happened, “My GM [general manager] called me before my shift and told me what happened and what I saw I couldn’t believe. The cops were already on their way.” The damages included a broken glass door, three broken registers, and their safe scratched but not infiltrated. Due to Five Guy’s tight security, no money was taken. Unfortunately, the small business next to the West Covina location, Mikomi Sushi, was then broken into and the robbers walked away with
their money. Other businesses included Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard Shop where an undisclosed amount of money was taken. A Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, as well as a Yogurtland in Monrovia, were also hit with the same damage, smashed front doors and cash registers found on the ground. From the footages collected, investigators believe there to be four to five suspects though their faces were fully covered. However, the criminals were believed to not have been wearing gloves since fingerprints and New Balance shoe prints were visible on the counters of the Five Guys in West Covina.
At least 26 dead and 20 injured in what is being considered the deadliest shooting in Texas modern history. The shooting, which occurred Sunday at 11:30 am local time during Sunday service, came just a month after the Las Vegas mass shooting. The First Baptist church, which hosts around 50 parishioners, was holding service when 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley began shooting. Law enforcement confirmed that Kelley was in all-black tactical gear and ballistic vest. “Nearly everyone had some type of injury,” said Wilson County Sheriff, Joe Tackitt in a press conference. Kelley fled the scene on vehicle, but not before an armed bystander shot him. Authorities say that Kelley’s body was found ten miles North in Guadalupe County. The cause of death was ruled to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A Ruger AR15 assault rifle and two hand guns were found in Kelley’s vehicle. Kelley did not have a permit for the weapons. Both the FBI and local law enforcement have worked together on the investigation. It was confirmed that Kelley had a military background, having served in the US air force since 2010, he was court martialed in 2012 for assaulting his wife and child. Kelley was released with a bad-conduct discharge in 2014. It was recently discovered that Kelley’s ex-mother-inlaw attended First Baptist Church and that he had text-
ed her Sunday morning, but was not inside the church at the time of the shooting. The ages of the victims ranged from 18 months to 77 years. Among those killed was a 14-year-old girl by the name of Annabelle Renee Pomeroy, the daughter of one of the pastors of the church. There are still 10 victims in critical condition as of Monday morning. “This is something that happens in a big city,” said Carrie Matula to MSNBC, “I would never have thought this would have taken place here. It’s just too tight a community. It doesn’t make sense.” Matula works at one of the two gas stations in Sutherland Springs, which is an unincorporated part of Wilson County. The small town has a population of 500, last time it was checked, and is described by locals as a “tight knit group, more of a family than a community. President Trump, who is on his first trip to Asia as President, tweeted “May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan.” “This is a man who had some mental health issues long before this,” said governor Greg Abbott. A sentiment that was echoed by Trump, who says that this is a “mental health problem, not a US gun law problem.”

Rio Hondo’s Boo Bash took place Tuesday, October 31 in the college’s lower quad. Halloween presented the perfect opportunity for clubs to put up booths and earn money while enjoying food, music and contests. Halloween was in full effect as clubs decorated their Halloween booths in unique ways, with unique ways to make money, as well. The Film Club had a balloon-popping dart game up in their booth. They charged $3 for three darts and $5 for six darts. Another one of the popular booths at Boo Bash was the ACT club’s pie-in-the face booth. The club charged $1 to smack a whip-cream pie tray in the face of a “Dodgers suck” yelling mad man. There was no shortage
of food at the event. Photo League had fresh tamales while Students Without Borders sold elotes. One of the activities at the bash was a doughnut eating contest. Each club present sent a member to represent them in the competition. Boo Bash’s pumpkin carving contest had some crafty entries. The JCPR club carved the Rio Hondo Roadrunner logo on theirs along with the letters “RHC.” The winning pumpkin came courtesy of the Photo League’s Josie Gomez who carved a camera with a 3D-looking lense. A costume contest was also held. Jake from State Farm, KFC’s Colonel Sanders and Frida Kahlo were just a few of the contestants. First place in the contest went to the MOCA club’s Evelyn Soto with her “Homies” inspired costume.

The Company RAZER originally known to many as the brand for great computer hardware is releasing their latest product. The product is considered the first all gaming smartphone while it is also Razer’s first phone ever. An event held in London on November 1st was the day that Razer opened the option of preordering the device to the public. Currently, Razer plans to ship the phone and have it out by November 17th to all who pre-order it, and this seems like an achievable goal considering that Razer is only shipping the product to the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe. There has been small chatter that they plan to also ship and sell to those in Australia, and the middle east at a later date, all the while India is ruled out as a possibility. Though what’s the big deal? It’s just another new smartphone like all the rest… WRONG! The beauty of this new and advanced piece of tech-
nology is that it’s better, this is the first Phone to have a 120Hz(Hertz) ultramotion display, Dual front-facing speakers with 3D sound, and a 4,000mAh(milliampere-hour) Battery capacity. All this means is that the graphics are amazing, the sound is terrific, and the battery doesn’t die quickly. With all this talk about what the phone has then it must be quite sizeable, well it is, the overall design is one the resembles the Nextbit Robin. This is because earlier in the year of 2017 the company Razer bought the company Nextbit, since Nextbit only had one design Razer had to make due. Although this seems like a challenge in itself, Razer didn’t necessarily have to start from the ground up. Though unlike the Robin+++ the new phone Razer is coming out with is heavier, Robin weighing in at 150g and the Razer handset at 197g. To add to the array of top of the line parts going into a single phone, the phone will run at 120 fps(frame per second) this means less lagging, pixelated, slow transitioning screens like

some Androids and iPhone have ever so often. Also due to the battery being so powerful the phone has a very long usage expectancy, and it’s supported by Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ tech which charges the phone from 0% to 85% in only one hour. All the greatness aside one of the problems to this phone is that it won’t have a headphone jack/port, instead, they plan to put a USB-3.5 adapter, this poses a major problem for gamers. Along with the overall cost of the product, it is going to sell at £699/$699 if sent to AU $890. “The price is kind of steep considering that Razer doesn’t have any credibility in the ‘phone’ industry. I tend to be a ‘sure thing ‘ type of person and would only purchase a phone like this if I knew it was reliable.” Said B. Morgan (other-

The CIA released 470,000 files allegedly obtained during the 2011 Osama bin Ladin compound raid. The 321 gigabytes worth of information were released this past November 1st and are in their original Arabic format, only modified so that the files cannot be edited. Everything from home movies, family pictures, practice reels for public speeches, propaganda, detailed files on the military whereabouts of british royals, bin Laden’s personal journal, and a worrying report in which an arrangement between Iran and members of al-Qa’ida could have led to strikes against American interests in the Middle East. That specific report detailed the arrangement, as well as a violation from al-Qa’ida. This violation however did not result in war
between al-Qa’ida and Iran, as their anti-American sentiments kept them allies. Many more files were deemed unpublishable due to either being a national security risk, being pornographic in nature, or being copyrighted material. Some of the copyrighted material includes the movies Antz, Chicken Little, and Cars, as well as video games such as Final Fantasy VII and Resident Evil. Titles that give us a glimpse to bin Laden as more than the leader of a terror organization. Other files that were not released include The Kremlin from Inside, National Geographic: Inside the Green Berets, CNN: Presents World’s Most Wanted, Biography - Osama bin Laden, CNN: In the Footsteps of bin Laden, and Where in the World is Osama bin Laden. One wonders if those last titles weren’t watched while sitting around the television, laugh-

This most recent release comes days after the National Archive’s published online files related to John F. Kennedy’s assassination. As with the bin Laden files, the Kennedy files were not released in their entirety, as it is up to the current president to decide what is released.

New Star Wars Battlefront Trailer Recap LUIS GUTIERREZ A&E Editor

A new trailer for Star Wars Battlefront 2 premiered Thursday, October 19, featuring more of a single player narrative that was largely absent in the first game that was released in late 2015. Taking place before the start of the new trilogy but immediately after the Return of The Jedi, you play as Iden Versio (portrayed and voiced by Janina Gavankar.) An Empire loyalist with commando and ace TIE fighter skills who is also the commander of an elite unit called Inferno Squad. Abroad the elite commando imperial starship Corvus, the player will venture forth with infer-
no squad across the galaxy assisting the empire wherever their battle-hardened skills are most needed. The player will venture forth with their squad going on a journey where the little explored perspective of the Empire during the every start of its downfall. The trailer featured inferno squad receiving orders from the main character’s father immediately following the aftermaths of the destruction of the second Death Star along with featuring inferno battling it out across the stars, from planet to planet. Although most of your playtime is set around the Versio Dice has stated that is going to be multiple changes

With it being Battlefront game the single-player narrative is set to feature adrenaline filled firefights set on a plethora of environments or planets with fast-paced star wars famous dogfights. Uk developer Criterion Games who are famous for racing game classics like Burnout 3 Takedown assisted in helping in the design of space combat hopefully delivering a true edge of the seat experience. While the singleplayer is certainly getting a lot of
attention with it seemingly being believed that is going to deliver on the promise of a great narrative the multiplayer is going to receive most of the attention around its loot box system. Even though the Battlefront 2 seemed to address the criticism not much customization or progression when it comes to usable unlocks or gear you can equip for your soldier. EA seems to have addressed this is in very non-consumer friendly way. In multiplayer every unlock, usable equipment, and hero are all earned via the game’s system called Star Cards. Cards can be crafted but the material can only be earned via the game’s loot
crates. Thus the player can be stuck grinding away for hours or can just drop some cash creating a pay-to-win system. EA has made changes to the way progression works since the public outcry they received from the beta for Battlefront 2 like making epic star cards not available to everyone at launch and make it to where you have to reach a certain player ranking to craft upgraded star cards. Time will tell if these changes amongst others will be enough to ease the critics. Battlefront 2 is set to drop out of hyperspace near a system near you on November 17, for the Xbox One, Xbox One X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, and PC.

With the day’s drawing near to the release of the latest installment in the Star Wars saga, Adam Driver (who plays Kylo Ren in the new core trilogy) was interviewed by GQ Magazine while promoting The Last Jedi. In the interview, Driver was asked on how he felt about the crucial scene in The Force Awakens where Kylo thrusts his lightsaber weapon into the body of his father Han Solo, famously played by Harrison Ford, and indeed killing him in the process. “When I watched the premiere, I felt sick to my stomach... Immediately, I thought I was going to puke. I was holding my wife [Joanne Tucker]’s hand, and she’s like, ‘You’re really cold. Are you OK?’ Because I just knew what was coming – I kill Harrison Ford – and I didn’t know how this audience of 2,000 people was going to respond to it, you know?” Needless to say, fans of the series weren’t too excited after witnessing the death

hero, but a villain. Star Wars had the greatest villain in cinema history. So, how you bring a new villain into that world is a very tricky thing. We knew we needed to do something [extremely] bold. The only reason why Kylo Ren has any hope of being a worthy successor is because we lose one of the most beloved characters.”
It should also be noted that Ford only agreed to come back and reprise the role of Solo if Disney and Lucasfilm made the bold decision of killing him off. But going back to the evolution of Driver’s character, the mindset of Kylo is a lot more complicated than the obvious observation of seeing him as someone who has anger issues and

Even the design of Kylo’s lightsaber has meaning to it in that the whole purpose of including a cross guard represents instability in both the weapon and the character’s emotions. The continued story of Kylo Ren and the rest of the Star Wars universe continues when The Last Jedi opens in theaters this December.

She is given a mysterious role at first that constantly teases you for more. I hope they show more of her off in future Marvel movies. But let’s not forget about the comedic villain as I like
to call him. Jeff Goldblum role as the GrandMaster. Although he easily gets overshadowed by Hela he plays a big role to the MCU as a whole. He helped explained the comic lore in the MCU establishing that there are countless beings out there, it is important to add that Guardians of the Galaxy has already done this. But this just adds on to it. Every scene he as in you find yourself laughing at him for something new every time, and it’s nice that Marvel decided to do that with this character. The supporting cast was by far the best, somewhere badass warriors, or somewhere just gentle giants. Everyone one in that movie served a purpose and it seemed like they all enjoyed working on this film. Giving it their all as comedic or serious parts for such small roles. They even went as far as getting some characters we’ve seen in previous movies to make an appearance in Ragnarok. Overall Thor was great! From the cheesy sci-fi music to the fight scenes that we all love. This is a must watch that I highly recommend. GIVING IT A 9.5/10
Stranger Things Season 2 Full Recap

Last week we covered the first half of season two of Stranger Things and this week we’re back with a SPOILER ridden full review of all nine episodes. Stranger Things 2 second half was fun and enjoyable like the rest of the series, but one episode seemed to be out of place. The seventh episode of

season two, titled “The Lost Sister,” has caught a lot of heat from fans of the hit Netflix series. In “The Los Sister,” Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) goes on a quest to find her “lost sister.” Eleven sees her so-called sister in a vision of her early days at the Hawkins National Laboratory. Eleven ends up traveling to Chicago and finds her “sister,” Kali (Linnea Berthelsen). After Eleven is confronted by
members of Kali’s gang, Kali enters the scene and shows that she has powers of her own. Kali, who seems to be in her late-teens, is able to manipulate people into seeing whatever she wants them to see. She is more experienced with her powers then Eleven is, so she pushes El to reach her full potential. While there are powerful moments in the episode (like Eleven choosing not to
end a man’s life after finding out he has children), “The Lost Sister” seems to act as a time-filler. Eleven is with her Kali back in Chicago, but back in Hawkins, Harper (David Harbour) is in the laboratory as demodogs begin to evade. El sees in a vision that Harper and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) are in trouble, so she decides to head back to Hawkins. By the end of episode eight, Eleven is reunited with The Party boys and the rest of the season one demogorgon-fighting crew. The final episode of season two, “The Gate,” is well executed as we see three groups fighting to close the gate to the Upside Down. “The Gate” shows Joyce (Winona Ryder), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) trying to force the “shadow monster” out of Will (Noah Shnapp) while Harper and El fight to close the gate underneath the Hawkins Laboratory. Meanwhile, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Max (Sadie Sink) and Mike (Finn Wolf-
hard) enter the gate’s spreading tunnels with Steve (Joe Keery) to distract the demodogs while Eleven struggles to close the Upside Down’s entry to the real world. The sequence of the three groups battling the Upside Down in their own way is really interesting and keeps viewers dialed in to see what happens next. The season two finale ends with a happily just as the first season does, but there’s a twist as well. In the final scene of the season, we see The Party enjoying their school’s “Snow Ball” dance when the camera pans to the Upside Down. As the camera switches to the Upside Down, the giant spider-looking shadow monster is scene daunting over Hawkins Middle School. Fans of Stranger Things will have to wait a long while to see what this scene leads to. Season three of Stranger Things isn’t expected to come out until 2019.

Hakuna matata, it means no worries, and it doesn’t seem like we’re going to have to at all! The last couple years Disney has been doing some no brainer cash grabs, by turning some of our favorite animated movies into live action. The success has been unbelievable with Cinderella, The Jungle Book and Beauty and The Beast. Each one of these movies having their own phenomenal casting, and doing spectacular in the box offices. It doesn’t seem like Disney is going to stop anytime soon with recreating our favorite childhood movies. The most recent one may arguably be the most popular of them all, with that being The Lion King. The casting may be the best casting so far and it’s going to be pretty hard for Disney to top this. For starters, we got Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, as Simba. I mean come on, is that not great or is that not great?! The next big name is going to be enough to sell out tickets in the box office for the next two months following the movies release,

We got the OG Mufasa, played by Darth Vader himself, James Earl Jones! So, we know he’s going to make Mufasa’s role in the movie much more emotional the second time around. Some would say that Jones’ voice is almost on the same level as the almighty Morgan Freeman. John Oliver as Zazu, Seth Rogen as Pumba, Billy Eichner as Timon and Eric Andre as Azizi, Keegan-Michael Key as Kamari. These names are just scratching the surface of it all, there’s no doubt in my mind that these comedic roles are going to be any less than hilarious. The remake of Disney’s The Lion King has a cast that’s practically golden, so it seems it makes it nearly impossible for this movie to flop, and I can’t wait to see it when it comes out in the summer of 2019. and watch one of the most iconic Disney movies come to life.

In a show of trigger happiness, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” returned on October 20 with episode two of season eight entitled “The Damned.” While audience members were left to piece together an incoherent narrative as best they could, by the end of the night there was one final surprise that left everyone confused. Morales survives! If that name doesn’t stand out to you, then you’re right in cahoots with majority of the world right about now as anewfound enemy appeared all the way back in season one for a total of four episodes.
Newly chiseled Morales, a bloodthirsty savior, has found himself in the company of the series’ antagonists looking to defeat Rick and his band of freedom fighters. Morales’ utterly random appearance seven seasons later is definitely a shock, as he was clearly on great terms with Rick upon leaving his original gang of survivors camped just outside of Atlanta in Season one. If you’ll recall, Morales was last seen with his wife, son, and daughter heading to Alabama in search of other family members. How he ended up in in Washington DC amongst the ranks of the saviors is anybody’s guess. I’m sure we’ll
be provided backstory into how this occurred much later on in the season. While the circumstances surrounding this development remain shrouded in mystery, all fans can agree that they were neither shocked nor excited to see Rick on the end of the barrel of yet another one of his loved ones. This decision seems to have served no major narrative purpose or expand the show’s overall plot. One can only hope and wonder what will be the outcome of this dangerous reunion between the former sheriff and self-proclaimed family man.

Also, New York City’s alternative weekly magazine The Village Voice, cancelled their print editions after 6 decades of distributing free papers to it’s citizens to enjoy at their leisure. In correlation to the story, radio historian Erik Barnouw, explains in his book The Sponsor: Notes on a Modern Potentate how pharmaceutical companies were among the biggest sponsors in broadcasting from 1930 onward. Because of sponsors taking up more and more print space in magazines and other physical editorials; consumers probably see the inclusion of sponsors as a way of excluding their readers and focusing their attention on sponsors in a more company related relationship. The broadcasting of pharmaceuticals back in the days of the Great Depression seems a little farfetched due to the majority of audiences unable to afford to visit the doctor to begin with.
However, according to MediaShift, The New York Times has already begun to blur the lines between sponsored and non-sponsored content; giving the reader more news content rather than the constant nagging of sponsors pleasing for the readers attention and money. But with the growth of social media also comes the jeopardizing of factual information being labeled as factual news. Imputing a thought online and making it seem as important information is a lot easier with a good portion of people having access to the Internet on their handheld devices. The feeling of having to turn the page in their hands has consumers keep physical novels in the market. It can’t be 100% determined if and when print will die off completely, but the growth of social opinions in the form video and tweets seems to be speeding the process along in a rapid way.

These days, It’s hard to tell apart the real and the fake because of how obsessed we are with fame and the intoxicating limelight. It’s ironic, how these days, you can be using all these different verbs and still not be condoning any action. It is here, in a generation of reluctance and second guessing where we currently reside. We look to numbers as an affirmation of our worth. From GPAs to SATs, to followers and likes, we become more and more mechanical by the second. We are technologically advanced to the point of being able to identify our very many faults, but never so much so, as wanting to act on our newfound knowledge. This isn’t the end of times, but rather, the age of newfound convenience. To blur the line between people and their world, is to obscure the line between the media and god. Nobody would contest that these days, it’s often those with the most profit that are prophets. For every hour spent browsing someone else’s adventures on Facebook, there’s lifetime lost. For every text message, there’s a second less of true contact between people and their intended. Like a

As we wonder if social media has made us apathetic to real issues we mustn’t wonder, but look to the world around us and ask ourselves, what’s real these days beside housewives in Atlanta and soccer teams in Madrid? I’ll tell you. It’s not a game when I.C.E. marauds the neighborhood back at it again with the white vans. Or when the only
tag with which to identify another is the one on their toe. Or when the DM could provide for more of an dopamine rush that of any MD’s Xanax. Or when the powers that be expect those displaced by Maria and Harvey to fare well on welfare. Or when an AK47-toting and armor clad organization, is committing genocide in the name of religion. Or when Manafort through all his schemes has made-off with millions and gets away with conspiracy,
all you see in him and his regimes eyes as racists is their tolerance for green faces. What Manafort and ISIS do, now that’s truly, a whole lotta gang sh**. And so, you see, reality is much wilder than any Instagram explore page. It would appear, as though social media is our attempt at escaping all that is real. Does social media make us apathetic? In all actuality, it does something much more complex. It makes it so that we miscon-
strue our existence. It does quite the opposite than make us apathetic, all the while, doing the very same. As we tune in, we tune out. But for one moment, imagine, the mindset of those with no reason to hate, other than their anger at not being able to resonate: “I comment, hell-bent on getting my point across to each and every one of these people to whom I have never even met. Now I swipe and type, maneuver the sidebar and scroll as my finger rolls and voilà, I’m immersed in a new location. Twitter fingers ensure that my every word accounts for the one hundred and forty or so characters that I only portray myself to be online.” And then, ask yourself, is it an increasing apathy happening or something much worse? Tis soon to be the irreversible season of false expectations, unrealistic entitlement, and the investing of everyone’s “sacred” opinion. An eternal fairytale where trolls no longer live under bridges, but are our very own friends and families. Where creativity is the art of concealing your source, and true originality ceases to exist.

Why Mass Shooters are Mostly White Men OLIVIA VENEGAS Opinion Editor

Majority of the public’s opinion of mass shootings believe gun control will completely resolve the issue. While I believe it will help, the reason for mass shootings is not guns, it is toxic masculinity that is exhibited by these white men who believe they are entitled to everything they desire. There is undoubtedly a direct correlation and causation between angry white men and mass shootings. A correlation between angry women of color and mass shootings does not exist. Girls and boys are not raised the same way and depending on the extremity of the division, it can develop into toxic masculinity. Young girls are told from parents and parental figures that the world is not a place made for them. They are to hide their bodies, not to express their anger, and there a specific careers and lives made for them such as teaching and being a housewife. Young boys, on the contrary, are told that the world is their oyster. There are endless possibilities for their
futures; pilots, CEO’s, and even President of the United States. Teaching young boys that the world is theirs results in a sense of entitlement. White boys, especially because which color is most represented in American success, white. Our society is based around white, wealthy, heterosexual, able-bodied, men. Most importantly, young boys are taught by mostly by their fathers, who were taught by their fathers, to be angry. “Big boys don’t cry”. Sadness is to not be expressed with tears because then boys are told they are “weak”, “acting like a girl”, and “being a sissy”. Since femininity is seen as inferior to masculinity in our society and therefore if a boy portrays feminine traits they are verbally shamed which may lead to physical consequences. Though my word may not seem authentic enough, from sociologist and author of the book “Angry White Men: American Masculinity at the End of an Era”, Michael Kimmel. “Our [white men] enemy is an ideology of masculinity that we inherited from our fathers, and their fathers before them, an ideology
that promises unparalleled acquisition coupled with a tragically impoverished emotional intelligence”. This all forms into toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity is an ill form of masculinity since this is the form that leads to mass shootings. All this considering, let us focus on the boys and men that are labeled as the outcast of masculinity. From this group is our answer. We all are aware of the male outcasts, they are constantly tormented for their lack of obvious masculine traits. In schools, the “nerds”, “scrawny” , and “fa****s” are bullied by the jocks. To again quote Kimmel, “Virtually every one of the shooters described their school days, as a relentless gauntlet of bullying, gay-baiting, epithets, physical assault, and harassment until they ‘snapped’.” Shooters are then created as retaliation against those who had humiliated their masculinity by exerting their higher gender performance over them. Most victims of bullying internalize the pain and cry when no one else is around, but this certain group of boys internalize and transform it into anger and
backlash; mass shootings. “And so they did what any self-respecting man would do in a situation like that--or so they thought. They retaliated.” In his book, Kimmel analyzes known mass shooters, “Gary Scott Pennington, seventeen years old, who killed his teacher and a custodian in Grayson, Kentucky, in 1993, was labeled a ‘nerd’ and ‘a loner’ and was constantly teased for being smart and wearing glasses.” The author goes on further to show the direct correlation between white boys who were victims of bullying and their form of revenge. There are many solutions to prevent mass shootings. Gun control being a symptom treatment but teaching boys to have emotional intelligence is the cure. Boys and men, it is okay to cry. You are humans with a whole range of emotions who should be allowed to show every emotion in a healthy way. The world is not just yours, everything deserving will come in time through patience and hard work.

Love is an odd and dangerous thing, it makes people go crazy and throw all logic out the window. But it’s something that we all crave for some reason. Just the feeling of being accepted and not having to put a front with someone is amazing. Having that one person by your side no matter what always pushing you to strive better and better, is a great thing to have. It’s something that’s beyond difficult to put into words or even describe but when you got it you know it’s there and you try your damn best to not let go of it. As for myself, I know for a fact and I’m not going to be letting go anytime soon at all. I’m about to be going on my one year anniversary with my beautiful girlfriend Elizabeth May Haught. As cliche as it may sound, it’s crazy how one person can really impact your life for the best. She’s taught me what it means to of course love
someone, as well being there for emotional support. Putting one’s needs in front of your own is a whole lot harder than it sounds, and it’s something most people
anything for her. You can’t be afraid to call them out whenever it seems like they’re about to do something destructive. Your loved one wants you to succeed as
you’re willing to deal with the backlash. At the end of a day, you’re a team and you have to be there for each other, I wouldn’t want anyone else but her at my side. Probably the last thing to give it away is when you find yourself always thinking about them. I know I do constantly whenever I’m at work or school, just thinking about her smile, lame jokes she likes to say, our conversations. It’s always certain to bring a warm feeling to my heart.
