Rio Hondo’s annual Valentine’s themed Club Rush was a two day event that took place in the campus’s midquad, on Feb. 13 and 14. The purpose of Club Rush is to pass out and provide information for each club. It also gives them a chance to raise some money by selling different foods and snacks. Clubs such as AGS (Alpha Gamma Sigma), the Photo League Club, JCPR, the Chinese Culture Club, Drama Club, DREAMERS and even the DSPS (Disabled Students Program & Services) were out selling all types of different foods; from churros for $1, to esquites, which is corn in a

Make America Wake Again DANTE LOPEZ- BENNETT Copy Editor

Since when does the American dream, access to a better education and better quality of living, include resting in peace? Now, in 2018 we reckon. Where presidents refuse to unveil taxes, Canadian rappers are philanthropists, and white supremacists have resolved to do alt-right and kill everything in sight. Such are the quarrels of today, where schoolyards are the new battlefield on which the war on terror is fought. A touching moment indeed was the sight of survivor Emma Gonzalez calling BS on those in governance who claim that “millennials” can’t possibly know about the world in which they live. Though her aspirations and challenge to the authority are touching, perhaps this time they will not be short-lived. You see, a bit of high school drama went down at Stoneman Douglas this week and it was anything but what those of the older generations could have fathomed or can now be in the position of authority to comprehend. On Valentine’s day as an innocent, you’re supposed to fret about an “ex,” and not because X marks the spot where an active shooter wants to bury a bullet in your skull. As an innocent, the generation responsible for your existence should be responsible for your protection. And if they can no longer be, admit that they have failed. Unfortunately, Punxsutawney feelings and an older generation’s misleadings are among us. Day and day, time after time, and yet again, it’s become repetitive as the massacre happens, a vigil and mass occur, and then we, as citizens of a country that prides itself as being the leader of the free world, act like this is an isolated instance of bad luck. We act, like somehow, a GUN is not able to threaten us in our public meeting spaces. With hundreds of articles written in our newsroom on the subject of mass shootings and guns has been the

tool with which people of all different ages have killed, it’s about time that we recognize access to firearms as always being the problem. We should truly think. As to how and why some schools in low-income neighborhoods in Harlem don’t have this problem. Because surely, the government loves the folks that live there, and obviously they were the first to have metal detectors on campus! We should think, as to why and how posing with money phones to your ear on the gram is more of a pretext for being arrested than if you were to be a militant gun enthusiast whose hobbies include slaying toads and joking about shooting up your school online. With such profound ignorance, and twisted virtues I can’t help but wonder if the Student blood at Stoneman Douglas’ High school was oil if then, Republican representatives would have rushed to their aid sooner. I wonder, if they would, at last, put their money where their mouth is and make firearms of all shapes and sizes legal on every campus. Ms. Gonzalez said it best when she made it known that {he who should not be named} would not have been able to do this damage with a knife. Well no matter, as his story’s next appalling presidential narrative unfolds, and generations grow old, so too, at last, shall the ambitions of the general population find themselves at the forefront of governance. Governing in a realistic way that is not opposed to evolution, problem-solving, and common sense. We should hope. But before hope, comes us wondering and marveling at the series of unfortunate events that lies before us now. Holding no punches, Mr. President, once again, with your legislative agenda, you have demonstrated your want to only Make America Wake Again. As you tally bands, and in your eyes is the greedy lust of a racist only tolerant of green faces that the NRA provides you with, we recognize the two years and eleven months left in your term.

A man was injured in a fight in El Monte on Tuesday Feb. 13 and taken to the hospital by sheriff’s deputies but died the next morning from his injuries. The spokesman for the Coroner Ed Winter described the victim as a man in his 40’s. Winter said the victim suffered from blunt force trauma during the fight. El Monte police officer Richard Luna said the police received a call around 6:33 p.m. on Tuesday about battery at 2600 Durfee Avenue. According to the call-
er, the victim was getting kicked. Detectives still do not know the reason for the assault. Police arrested the suspect, 30-year old Jesus Chinchabel, on suspicion of the murder, on Thursday, according to Sheriff’s Homicide Lt. John Corina. He is not sure if Chinchabel knew the victim, 43-year-old Lorenzo Bustamante-Nieto. Bustamante-Nieto walked down the street while the suspect was going the other way. “Out of the blue, the suspect punched the victim and knocked him down,” Corina said. “He starts kicking him.” El Monte police saw the suspect Thursday morning and had him arrested. Booking records currently show that Chinchabel is being held at the El Monte jail with a bail set to $1 million. He does not have a set date for court yet. If anyone has any information they can reach the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

Rainbow Six Siege invitational breached in Tuesday, Feb. 13, delivering an intense tournament to determine who is best in the world at Siege. The tournament had 16 teams from all across the world compete for the “ol’ hammer” trophy, and a prize pool of $500,000. For those that haven’t experienced what 25 million players have experienced across three different platforms, according to VentureBeat.com, Siege is a
game that sees a team of five attackers assault a team of five defenders by planting a defuser across two different bombsite objectives or either defeating all defenders. The 2018 invitational drew more attention this time around seeing four other bigger, prominent bigger esports organizations pick Siege teams. Powerhouse famed organizations of Faze Clan, CLG, Liquid, and EG all to acquire rosters in this growing esports scene. The invitational seemed to snag the spotlight this last weekend as Siege had over 1.69 million hours watched compared to
the 0.7 million of last years according to Esportscharts. com. During the invitational Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft were given the perfect venue to show off what what as players to expect in the coming weeks. Operation Chimera, a new PVE mode set in the small town of Truth or consequences, New Mexico along with two new operators to toy with that has Team 6 deal with the Chimera Virus infesting the town. These maps are set to feature a more narrative experience for the players as the maps are to be bigger than ever with
offering five different types of “infected” to fight against. The grand finals came to down to a best of five between the reigning champs team EG, versus another well known juggernaut of a team PENTA Esports. PENTA who were Rainbow Six Siege Seasonal Champions three times before were looking to overthrow EG. During the ban/pick, this phase was seemingly favored by EG as they quickly and feverishly defeated PENTA on the first two maps of Clubhouse and Oregon. In game leader for EG “Canadian” Troy Jaroslawski and
“BC” Brandon Carr came out in dominant fashion top fragging and slaying past PENTA during the first two maps. Then, on a map that PENTA had little experience on, and arguably one of EG’s best maps, Kafe Dostoyevsky became a down and dirty street fight struggle that saw PENTA as the clawing ahead at. On the fourth map Bank, that is when the tide started to shift towards the European boys across the pond. Bank saw a change in strategy and operator picks from PENTA as they began using Montagne to shield past the defenses of EG. The final game on Coastline was truly one of the best games we have ever witnessed in Competitive Siege history. Coastline was a dark horse map that has four viable defendable holdouts for the defending team. PENTA seemingly was going to run away with the final map taking four rounds in a row with team captain “Pengu” was top fragging leading his team to match point. One more round and PENTA hold up that hammer instead of EG for a second time in a row. With one final round left in the match and down 4-0 Canadian spawn peaks taking out PENTA’s long range specialist operator Glaz and rallying his team back to a even score of 4-4 taking the game to a nailbiter overtime. The match finally came to a close when in overtime where Pengu’s championship fire would not be extinguished as he clutched out the round for his team in a 1v2 scenario on the operator Hibana. Further proving that Siege is here growing more and more as a esport.
Renewable Energy Made Up Half Of All New US Energy In 2017 GILBERT ESPANA Reporter
gilberto.espana0348@my.riohondo.edu
Renewable energy outpaced natural gas as the newest additions to the power grid in the United States. It marks the fourth time that renewables outpaced natural gas as the new additions in the United States which is made up of a combination of wind, solar, geothermal, and hydro. The data was reported from the Federal Energy Reg-
ulatory Commission ( FERC) in 2017, which showed that a total of 12, 270 Megawatts of new energy came from renewable sources. Most of the energy came from sSolar and wWind power. Last year was one of the fastest adoption rates for renewable energy ever, with about half of the added power coming from green sources. The U.S energy showed the development of the renewables to be which are on the rise and fossil fuel to being on the decline. The United
States is still mainly powered by coal plants and with the support of the current administration being behind fossil fuel, it will terminate the industry. Almost all of the power plants shut down last year used fossil fuels as their source of energy. The Energy Information Administration has reported that power companies plan to retire nearly ten gigawatts of coal power in 2018. Coal and natural gas should be declining in the United States. Jennie Jorgenson who is one of the authors
of a 2017 study on wind curtailment from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory wrote a report based on wind energy. Researchers from NREL modeled a scenario in which wind energy provided 37 percent of the needed electricity in the Western United States. Solar power in the state is growing quickly, and is projected to grow by nearly 5,000 megawatts in the next five years. Nearly half of all new, large scale electric power generation installed last year
use renewable energy sources. A total of 25 gigawatts of capacity was installed last year, and about 12 gigawatts of that amount came from clean energy. Researchers have tried to improve the curtailment which occurs when the renewable energy supply is so great that the supply exceeds the capacity of the transmission lines that carry electricity from a power plant to your outlets.

Matabele ants (also known as Megaponera analis) once injured, they release pheromones which draw other “soldiers” ants to the rescue. A team of scientists led by University of Lausanne postdoctoralpostdoctorate researcher Erik Frank, found out that the ants rescue their injured comrades and carry them to safety, even if the wounded ant isn’t exactly dying. As the Matabele ants are hunted, about a third of the ants could have their legs bitten off by termites. Once the wounded ants are rescued, healthy ants spend about an hour or so licking the injured ones severed legs. The African ants take turns caring for their injured comrades, gently holding the hurt limb in place and front legs while intensely “licking” the wound for up to four minutes at a time. The Megaponera analis clash with rival insect colonies though mostly termites. , and Tthe ants are known for raiding termite nests in order to steal valuable resources. The discovery made by Erik T. Frank marks the first time non-human animals have been observed systemati-
cally nursing their wounded back to health. New research has proven that ants spend hours after battles treating each other, as healthy ants take turns administering aid to the wounded. It has been proven that ants who have been nursed back to health have a ninety percent chance of surviving. During battle, when as a Matabele ant loses a leg, those that survive can run once again at normal speed within a day of injury. Frank discovered that injured ants release a pheromone that acts as a signal flare, alerting the rest of the group when there’s a “man down.” Frank’s discovery has proven that these actions of the ants’ evolution is a sign that they are “intelligent or empathic.”. Erik T. Frank’s study has shown the different behaviors of ants as Frank commented, “These behaviors that seem to be incredibly complex have a very clear purpose. The ants don’t know why they’re doing what they’re doing.” Frank and his colleagues at the Comoe National park research station in Northeastern Cote d’Ivoire saw that once in the nest, the ants carefully examine injured comrades, probing them with their antennae more than twice as often as healthy nest-mates.
University of Oxford, captured this image on August 7 using a standard DSLR
camera.” The image is of a positively charged atom suspended in an ion trap. Nadlinger took this long exposure photograph that not only grasped the world’s attention. It also earned the Ph.D candidate a National Science Photography prize by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. “The idea of being able to see a single atom with the naked eye had struck me as a wonderfully direct and visceral bridge between the miniscule quantum world and our macroscopic reality,” Nadlinger said in a press release. People are wondering as to how Nadlinger was able to achieve capturing such an image. Nadlinger took the photo by peering through a window of the ion trap’s ultra-high vacuum chamber. He used a 50mm lens, extension tubes, and two flash units outfitted with color gels
as well. Nadlinger was able to capture an infinitely small atom. However, “At 38 protons and 215 billionths of a millimeter across, strontium atoms are relatively large by comparison.” Making it slightly less difficult to see the atom. But to put it into perspective, “Each atom is roughly 0.25 nanometers (or billionths of a meter) across; billions of the atoms would fit comfortably inside a single red blood cell.” Yet we are not seeing the actual outline of an atom. The only reason we are able to see the atom because it absorbed, then re-emitted laser light at a speed capturable by a long camera exposure. So what we are actually seeing is a reflection of laser light. Without the long exposure feature of the camera, the atom would not be visible to the naked eye.

Most recently, Snapchat had an update that drastically changed its design. This update has annoyed many of its users and received tons of backlash. For some, it’s like learning to use the application all over again. The previous version of Snapchat had your snaps and messages separated from the stories. Now, both messages and stories are merged together. This updated version has also changed how you view content created by friends, celebrities, and Companies. These stories that were onced merged in with your friends are now posted separately on the discover page. Something that once made you feel closer to celebrities, now just feels like any other magazine or web page out there. Celebrities like Christine Teigen have received similar comments from fans all stating they feel less connected with her now that they’re not on the same page as their friends. Teagan responded to

How many people have to hate an update for it to be reconsidered?” Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel stated at Goldman Sachs’ Technology and Internet conference, “The tech is an important piece but I think the harder part you can’t get around is the time it takes to learn. You do need folks to use the product, to communicate
with their friends to learn how to better provide that feed.” Spiegel said that he personally prefers the new version and thinks that users will like it too once they have had time to learn to use the new features. He describes it as a split between communications(people you know) and broadcasting(people you don’t know). He believes it’ll bring more clarity to the audience by distinguishing the two types of content Snapchat provides.

Chris Rock is back with his first stand-up special in 10 years with the Netflix Original: Tamborine. The Netflix comedy, released Feb. 14 focuses on truth and equality as Rock tackles everything from raising children to American politics. Americans have to be more honest to their children, at least Rock thinks so. In the comedy, Rock takes on harsh truths as he insists kids get lied to often and become egotistical people. Rock seamlessly paints examples of why children need to be told
the truth and why bullies are needed. Rock points to the lives of American billionaires Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg in his must-hear talk on the importance of bullies. Rock’s comedic performance will have one nodding their head, agreeing with his “we need bullies” statement. America’s justice system is also brought up in the Netflix original. Rock talks about how two people can do the same crime but get different sentences. This leads him to jokingly suggest the government “be more like Walmart.” Of everything thrown at you in Rock’s Tamborine, the part that really stands out, partly due to the Flor-
ida shooting that occurred the same day of the special’s release, was Rock’s rant on gun control at the very jump of the show. Rock starts Tamborine off by saying he wants true equality, jokingly asking police to “shoot a white kid once in a while,” so the shootings of blacks don’t look so bad. He then goes on to say America has a gun problem, and that “there will never be gun control.” An interesting statement considering last week’s Florida incident. In Tamborine, Rock makes fun of something Americans have heard time and time again following U.S. mass shootings. “They’ll shoot 100 people
in Vegas,” Rock jokes, “and someone will come and they’ll just talk like ‘hey, you know, guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Rock successfully introduces troubling topics in American society and turns it to a laughing matter; something every comedian should aim to do, and something every great comedian does. Not because we shouldn’t take our problems seriously, but because taking these things head on can be too much at times. Well it may not have been what he expected of the project, Rock’s Tamborine stands as a comedic call for equality and justice.

The Polar Music Prize, which is known to be a coveted Swedish award, has been recently given to the famed metal band Metallica. The band, which was first formed back in 1981 by founding members Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, has now been added to the short list of recipients of the Polar Music Prize. Other past receivers of the prize include Paul Simon, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Sting, Ray Charles, and Stevie Wonder. Wednesday saw the band Metallica being recognized by the Swedish committee for their ensemble playing and for the reach their music has had with their fans over the years. The Polar Music Prize was first created in 1989 by Stig Anderson. Aside from creating the award, Anderson is also known for being the publisher and manager of the Swedish band ABBA. The popularity and the sales of over 100 million records is what helped cement the award being given to Metallica. “Not since Wagner’s emotional turmoil and Tchaikovsky’s cannons has anyone created music that is so physical and furious, and yet still so accessible,” said the Polar Music committee about the metal band. Ulrich also expressed his thoughts on receiving the award along with his bandmates saying, “Receiving the Polar Music Prize is an incredible thing. It puts us in very distinguished company. It’s a great validation of everything that Metallica has done over the last 35 years. At the same time, we feel like we’re in our prime with a lot of good years ahead of us.” Metallica has always had fame with their fans since their creation in the 1980s, but it wasn’t until the band’s 1991 single “Enter Sandman” that they found themselves in mainstream popularity. Only two prizes are given yearly, one towards the category of classical, and the other closely relating to pop music. The Afghanistan National Institute of Music and its founder Ahmad Sarmast also found themselves receiving the prize for their contribution in music.

Unapologetically Black : Black Panther Does Simple Superbly JAKE LAURELL
A&E/Science&Tech Editor jake.laurell7011@my.riohondo.edu
More often than not, pulling off the basics can do alot when impressing people. What Black Panther has done, is give audiences a film that has the standard superhero movie frame, but has components that are pulled together so well with everything executed so superbly; that the movie has become one of the best Marvel studios has to offer. The movie manages to seamlessly bring together ideas of isolationism, immigration, systemic racial tensions and weave them into the basic hero’s journey structure; creating a film that carries all these sophisticated messages while being an overall great superhero action
movie. What we’ve come to expect from a marvel movie, as well as any action/adventure movie is displayed in Black Panther, but it is done so well and is so intricately characterized with the Movies style that the film rises from standard to fantastic If there are two ideas that i find to be the most poignant, is the idea of rebuking the ghosts of the past and finding your own path. In the Marvel Universe, everyone believes that T’challa ( Chadwick Boseman) country of Wakanda is simple and undeveloped, a ruse designed by his ancestors to hide their advanced civilization from the world. The main antagonist of the film, Michael B. Jordan’s Killgrave, is not only trying to return and rule the country to gain some resemblance belonging and
birthright, but in part to use the resources of a country that he believed abandoned him and his father to spread their power across the world and to dominate all those who are oppressors. The great part of this character is that his motivations are not only justified, but his idea of saving people, fueled in large by decades of black oppression, are not inherently bad. His methodology however is fueled by hatred and oppression, ultimately making him the same as the people he plans to attack. Nietzsche said it best, “Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.” By the end of the film, T’challa realizes that he has to not only evolve himself, his country
and their practices, but look towards the future as someone who will make their own future and give past mistakes no power. One of my favorite aspects of the film is all of time put into the creating the culture of Wakanda. All of set design, as well as the clothing, jewelry, music, makeup and hairstyles are done so well on every person from main character to extra. Every aspect of Wakanda and its people not only are inspired and taken from black/african culture but are modernized; showing that the stigma of primitiveness related to african peoples and cultures are not that but are a deeply sophisticated design that could easily be apart of the modern world. Black Panther takes these traditional and contemporary African Designs
and uses them to help build a world that has its people wearing powerful, bright and prideful clothing; something thats fits perfectly with the mindset of the countries peoples. From the acting, to world building, it’s characters and it’s messages; Black Panther is a fantastic movie. With the way affecting culture right now, black panther is a film that’s not only memorable, but will change the standards of movie goers everywhere. Watching the film is a must, so that not only can one understand the concepts presented, but to be apart of the conversation, because this movie is going to be talked about for awhile.

She speaks about the constant yearning for love. It is about how filling in the void with another person sometimes is not enough. Salgado touches upon the difficult topic of heartbreak. She sends out an important reminder, heartache can ruin us, yet we always survive, and somehow in the midst of
all the chaos, we find ourselves and return whole. Salgado told a source, “Growing up, she never quite fit in, turning to books to escape the reality that she didn’t quite love and accept herself just as she was.” After catfishing someone, Salgado met with them and she recalls him asking, “Why didn’t you give me the option to choose you for you? You chose for me.” In that moment something clicked and she realized the hate she had towards herself. Salgado holds nothing back and touches upon important topics. She takes
readers to moments she experienced that defined her life. “Corazon” is about love and how the feeling evolves in meaning as we grow older. “The yearning for love, falling in love, and falling out of love, and returning to yourself,” Salgado explains. She also speaks about her father and how her family had to face his alcoholism. The passing of her father has changed her perception of how she loves those around her and that is something that can be seen through this text. The goal is to celebrate
our heartbreaks with other women. “When Salgado feeds her craving with a new lover, she is reminded again of all the ways it is not enough, but that never stops her from searching for a romance as succulent as the mangos hanging on her grandmother’s tree back in the old country.” Salgados book is available for sale on Not a Cult Media’s website. “Corazon” will also be on Amazon beginning March 2018.
20th Century Fox for a $300 million dollar contract with Netflix. Murphy ends his contract with Fox this summer and makes the move to Netflix in July. With a contract of $300 million, Murphy agrees to produce new films and television series exclusively for Netflix over the next five years. This past August, Netflix was able lure in Shonda Rhimes with a four-year contract of $100 million dollars. Rhimes has been with ABC for over a decade and produced hit making shows like, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal,
And How to Get Away with Murder. This means Netflix now has two of the top television show producers on board with their company. Netflix has been making power moves not only with Murphy and Rhimes, but by also having people like Dave Chappelle, David Letterman, Chris Rock, and Adam Sandler. This is because Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services and it grants producers plenty of creative freedom. Although Murphy and Rhimes are both moving to Netflix to create new content, this does not mean that the
works they have now will be affected. They will still continue producing their ongoing television series. Murphy has stated to multiple media outlets,“The history of this moment is not lost on me. I am a gay kid from Indiana who moved to Hollywood in 1989 with $55 in savings in my pocket, so the fact that my dreams have crystallized and come true in such a major way is emotional and overwhelming to me. I am awash in genuine appreciation for Ted Sarandos, Reed Hastings, and Cindy Holland at Netflix for believing in me and the future of my com-
pany which will continue to champion women, minorities, and L.G.B.T.Q. heroes and heroines, and I am honored and grateful to continue my partnership with my friends and peers at Fox on our existing shows.” This however, will be a loss to Broadcast and Cable television. With Disney planning to merge with Fox, they will both be losing two of television’s most reliable hitmakers. Not only does this affect both networks, but makes it difficult for other networks to compete with Netflix willing to pay millions of dollars for a producer.

Call Of Duty Movie Now in the Works LUIS GUTIERREZ Reporter
luis.gutierrez0200@my.riohondo.edu
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION/ JAKE LAURELL A depiction of seeing Call of Duty on the big screen.
Are you ready for another over-the-top action pleasing movie? Because love it or hate it, a Call of Duty movie is now in the works, with Stefano Sollima in talks to direct it. Sollima is currently in charge of directing “Sicario 2” which probably helped him land this role for the COD (Call of Duty). Video game movies have a bad stigma, solely on the face that they never succeed with the exemption of a few; one being the Resident Evil franchise, grossing over a billion dollars world wide over the course of seven different movies. But on the
other hand, we have movies like Assassin Creed with a 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, making just a little bit over two hundred million dollars worldwide. This was just the most recent video game movies that had flopped, so you can see why studios are sceptical about taking on such a task. The latest video game movie, Tomb Raider that is set to release in March, has a lot of people on the edge of their seats. Sollima and the people behind this project have big ambitions with COD. Not just making a one and done like most cases, they intend to create a cinematic universe to compete with Marvel and DC. But one big reason why comic book movie and cartoon mov-
ie franchises do so well is because all those characters are loved and known already by many. So it’s needless to say that they are going to have a bit of a struggle to get people to love whatever characters they introduce. Even though they have a director lined up for this difficult task, as well as a script in the works COD still doesn’t have a studio to back them. There is a good chance that this movie may not even see the light of day if no major studio signs them.

Eight Ways to be Productive JOSE AHUMADA
Reporter jose.ahumada7466@my.riohondo.edu
Being productive is an important skill to have, especially for those who are going to school and working or have other important things going on in their lives. Productivity is a way of being. Productive habits are good to have as they increase your chance of finishing up tasks for the day. Productivity can help with time management, reducing stress, getting tasks done, and beating procrastination. There are multiple ways to be productive and get things done, but here are some basic tips on how to do so.
OLIVIA VENEGAS
Opinion/Lifestyles Editor
olivia.venegas4091@my.riohondo.edu
1.Creating a to-do list. When creating a to-do list, make sure to focus on the tasks at hand for that day. For example, if you have certain classes on certain days for school, look at what assignments are due first and get those done. When it comes to things like bills, see what is due first and make a budget to spend your money wisely and see what needs to be paid first. This will help save you unnecessary stress and get certain tasks done. 2.Develop a morning routine. Start the day right by waking up early, meditating, eating a good breakfast, reading, or working out. This ensures that you have energy for the rest of the day. 3.Stop multitasking.
This is a big habit that tends to kill our productivity. According to research from Stanford University, multitasking is less productive than doing a single task at a time. Your brain can only focus on one thing at a time and it lacks the capacity to perform multiple tasks successfully. Work on one thing at a time to be able to perform the task successfully. 4.More doing, less waiting.Life is all about action. Doing things right away leads to positive results and can produce beneficial habits when trying to get things done. If you talk about how you will do something, go ahead and take the first step necessary to reach that goal. Actions will always speak louder than words.
5.Being less available. Do not have too much time on your hands to make yourself available to everyone. There are times you will have to turn down lunch with a friend or skip partying and going out. This gives you time to think, create, plan out, and write. 6.Turn off devices. Phones and social media can be a distraction and keep people from getting tasks done for the day. Practical tips include turning off your phone, leaving it to charge, or replying to people when you are not busy. 7.Set up things on your calendar. Keeping things set on your calendar will help keep you updated on tasks that need to be done for certain

days. It is a basic tool that is often overlooked, but will help in the long run. 8.Being fit. Exercising is a good way to stay productive. Getting in shape is a good way to boost your energy levels and productivity. It will set you up with energy for the day and help you focus on the tasks at hand. These are some basic tips for increasing your productivity. Hopefully they will help you stay motivated in building good habits for getting things done and staying productive.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham went on television and told one of the most polarizing athletes in the world, LeBron James to “shut up and dribble” after he made comments criticizing President Donald Trump. What if James was to “shut up and dribble” and do nothing outside of the world of basketball? Let’s start off by looking at who we’re discussing. LeBron James was born in Akron, Ohio in 1984 to a single, struggling mother. He lived in Akron projects and would have to stay at friends’ and coaches’ houses for days while his mom was out working. Young James worked, too. He did his work on the basketball court, and he was special. By the time James was a ninth grader, he was making noise around the country as the next great basketball phenom. By the time he was in the eleventh grade, there
James was to shut up and dribble? Well, if James was to shut up and dribble, he wouldn’t have started the “I Promise” program in 2011 to give back to the Akron youth. That program wouldn’t have expanded in 2015 to give all who completed it a free-ride scholarship to the University of Akron. There wouldn’t be an “I Promise” institution in the works at the University of Akron. There wouldn’t be an “I Promise” public school opening in the fall for 120 third-graders and 120 fourth-graders. That public school wouldn’t be open for Akron students in grades one-eight by 2022. James is not the rich, spoiled jock Ingraham described him as. James is a hard-working American who gives back to his people. He is just as American as the Connecticut-born Ingraham is. Why should he shut up and
dribble? The three-time NBA champion is as good a role model one could hope for. The man worked his way from the bottom: no million-dollar loans. James used hard work and a dedication to his craft to become successful. He’s now a husband to his high school love, and father to three children. James has yet to be in the news because of a sex scandal, gambling habit or anything of that matter. The man’s record is as clean as it can be So, no, James shouldn’t listen to Ingraham and shut up and dribble. James shouldn’t stop giving back to his community. James shouldn’t stop being a role model. James shouldn’t stop having an opinion. James should continue to speak his mind. If people don’t like it, so be it. James is a prominent figure whose voice can reach many. We can only hope he continues to use his status to make a difference.

were talks of him being the first high school athlete to forego senior year and go straight to the NBA. This gave James, a boy from the projects, the opportunity to leave high school and become a multi-millionaire at the age 17. James turned down the chance, though, because he didn’t want to miss his senior season, or prom, at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. After he completed high school, James was the number one overall pick in the NBA draft at 18 years old. Fast-forward to now. Fox News’ Ingraham called LeBron a “rich-spoiled athlete” as she defended President Trump. The same Trump who brags of getting “a small million-dollar loan” from his father. The same Trump who used his wealth as an excuse to assault women. The same Trump who used his celebrity status to make his way into the White House. Who’s the rich, spoiled one? Now, what if LeBron
To paraphrase an intelligent and articulate YouTube personality by the name of Chris Hartwell, we live in an age of extremes. All too often do I visit the comments section of a Facebook post or a tweet from another YouTube personality that I notice a random stranger had taken the time to go out of their way and point out the supposed error of the individual that had just posted. I wonder if the people who go and specifically target these personalities actually get some type of pleasure from spreading negativity in the form of harsh words or
even physical threats, all because they didn’t agree with what the person expressed. I’ve always told myself that if I don’t agree with what another person says, that I first attempt to understand their point of view before coming to a conclusion that I don’t agree with the person. Specifically, in pop culture fandom, these supposed fans of popular properties are too quick to judge a new installment or a trailer for an upcoming film before they even truly understand what it is they are complaining about. The latest installment in the well-known Star Wars saga divided the huge fanbase because the creators of the film took the story in a totally different direction than what the fans had expected.
The direction of the film was due to the fact that the episodic installment of The Force Awakens was criticised to be too similar to the previous classic A New Hope which was filmed back in the 1977. Fans of such famous properties should get accustomed to the fact that studios will eventually change things up in the boardrooms to try and keep said properties fresh and intriguing before the story in progress begins to feel too familiar or even stale. As a fan of popular properties such as Star Wars and Marvel Studios films, I am aware that the popularity of certain installments within each series will have studio heads trying to figure out how they can continue the success that the previous
films have brought and therefore replicate it. Eventually though, there will be a film that will stir emotions or cause me to outright disagree with what they did in order to keep the story fresh. As a fan myself, I will try to understand why the decisions were made in the cutting-room floor in order to try and keep some civility in the chatrooms of popular social media sites and apps. The same mentality can even be applied to more important matters in the world, such as politics and certain public figures. All I ask in the end is that all fans and followers of popular subjects attempt to do the same thing.

Guns: Killing 1077, then Rising in Stocks OLIVIA VENEGAS
Opinion/Lifestyles Editor olivia.venegas4091@my.riohondo.edu
There are those who believe in the reasoning behind the statement “fight fire with fire.”. Retaliate with the same form of fire as the enemy to defeat them, this and only this will work. Gun manufacturing companies support and influence this reasoning to consumers because without this, how else would their stocks rise after mass shootings? American Outdoor Brands, the creators of the AR-15 rifle that was used by the shooter in the Parkland,Florida has risen since the mass shooting. Gun manufacturing companies are sitting pretty upon the graves of the 1,077 victims. While the number of victims from mass shootings rise, so do firearm purchases and their stocks. This mor-
bid correlation happens out of fear that that there will be stricter gun laws or their guns will be taken away all together, so they buy as many while they still can. These Americans are scared for the all the wrong reasons. Victims of these shootings are not thinking in the moment, “Geez, I sure wish I had my own gun right now”, instead these victims are wishing and praying for this to not be happening at all. They are doing what they can to survive a shooting that should have never taken place. This Florida high school shooting has caused victims to be than traumatized, they are angry. The students are angry at their politicians who have chosen profit over people, over children. Rallies and protests took place for Presidents Trump’s arrival of the Florida High School and his administra-
tion’s lack of anti-gun policies. Protests such as these can and should create change. Changes that have the potential to take away Americans guns, thus causing them to buy as many guns as they still can. Trump’s political presence has never been anti-gun,as noticed by Florida’s Emma Gonzalez, a student who survived the attacks, pointed out that Trump has received $30 million from the NRA. Therefore, Americans against anti-gun laws do not have much to worry about. Shootings that have taken place under the Trump administration have not brought the same profit to gun manufacturers as the shootings that took place during the anti-gun Obama administration. Obama’s administration brought threat to pro-gun Americans, which brought tremendous amounts of profit to firearm manufac-
turers. Although, Trump being “pro-receiving” millions of dollars from the NRA, has not brought as much profit. However, with the current outrage, pro-guns Americans really do fear the Trump administration might propose stricter gun laws, so the American Outdoor Brands stock rose just one day after the Florida shooting.
Time and time again, gun manufacturing companies capitalize on the emotion of fear, whether the fear is already there or they create it. And time and time again, we are reminded that this is not the answer to mass shootings since the Florida shooting was America’s 18th shooting this year.
VIA CNBC The American Outdoor Brands Stock, makers of the AR-!5 rifle, rose just one day after the Florida school shooting.

Cool heads prevailed on Friday night as Rio Hondo won its final conference game, beating Pasadena City College 79-64 at the Rio gymnasium. A few scuffles between the two South Coast League-North rivals made it a feisty situation for the players which the Roadrunners handled with more verve to win
the game. With the win, Rio ends the season 4-6 (7-18 including preseason) with most of its players available to return for a second season next November. Freshman Jonathon Martinez is a guard set to return in the fall – prepared for a larger roll after playing an impressive first campaign. His six assists and team total 20 along with 35 team rebounds surged the Road-
runners into a win that at the end proved comfortable. The game caught peakheat when freshman Elijah McElroy was found on the floor of the court underneath the basket following an apparent knee collision with a Pasadena player. Both coaches were vocal about the scuffles between the players and referees ensuing the incident that ended with Coach Steve Johnson receiving a technical foul for
his animations towards the officials on the sideline. Following the action play, Rio Hondo found Zen by making points rather than continue to heckle towards the referees or fall into the hands of instigating Lancers players. Key scores from freshman Anthony Rios and sophomore Alexis Baron in the middle third of the game secured momentum for the Roadrunners – Baron’s three-point
play from a foul situation after scoring a lay-up encouraged the crowd to add to the energy created from the display on the court. The Roadrunner’s Men’s Basketball team will be missing out on regionals this season but have found a trustworthy base come 2019 with Rios, Martinez, McElroy, and Uziel Felix all establishing themselves in Coach Johnson’s squad rotation this winter.

The Lady Roadrunners fell to the Pasadena City College Lancers Friday, Feb. 16 at Rio Hondo. Pasadena City spoiled Sophomore Night at The Hondo as they defeated the Rio Ladies, 76-50. Rio fell behind quickly Friday night. They trailed PCC by 15 after the first quarter and 21 at the half. The Rio Ladies didn’t seem too rattled by the lop-sided score, though. Instead, the Lady Roadrunners kept their heads high as they fought until the game’s final buzzer. Sophomores Destinee Garr, Emily Mercedes and Maggie Lamas all played their final game in Rio’s whiteblack-and-gold uniforms. Garr had herself a solid all-around performance. She finished with four points, nine assists, six rebounds and five blocks. Lamas and Mercedes led the team in points, both with 14-a-piece. Lamas also had five rebounds and two steals, while Mercedes had seven rebounds, four assists and five steals to go with her 14 points. The three sophomores,
RAMON ALVARADO/EL PAISANO NEWS Destinee Garr (21) was a stand-out on the defensive side of the ball for Rio Friday night. She finished with five blocks.
Garr, Lamas and Mercedes all spoke to El Paisano after their last game at Rio Hondo about their favorite memory with the team and what they’ll be moving onto post-Rio. They all had similar things to say. “As far as what school I’m going to, I’m still undecided… I’m trying to figure it out,” the Rio forward, Garr said. “Favorite memory…” Garr continued, as she glanced at Lamas and Mercedes who stood by her side, “Just playing with these guys. We go through our ups-and-downs, we get on each other’s nerves, but it’s all love. I love these guys.” Mercedes and Lamas are also undecided on what school they will be going to next, though both say they want to continue playing basketball wherever they end up. Lamas, who spoke to El Paisano last, drew some emotion out of her fellow sophomore Lady Roadrunners. “My favorite memory was just being with my teammates, especially [Garr and Mercedes],” Lamas said. The three Rio Ladies smiled at one another then laughed. Garr, Lamas and Mercedes came together for a group hug in their final moments as Lady Roadrunners.
