A Golden West College Professor, Tarin Olson was put on leave for the next two weeks, including from her online classes, after a video of her telling a Long Beach couple to “go back to your country” went viral. The Coast Community College District said that they are reviewing how to proceed with the matter. The video went viral last week and was posted by Tony Kao on Facebook. He wrote that he was taking a walk with his wife and daughter and “encountered a bigot and a racist...in our neighborhood in Long Beach.” The video starts off mid-conversation with the woman walking away after realizing that she is being recorded. In the video, Kao says, “I want you to tell everybody why you told us to go back to our country.” Olsen replies with “you need to go back to your home country,” and “I never voted for you.” Kao tells the woman that both he and his wife were born in the United States. “We’re very aware the community has deep concerns, and we’re not going to let this die,” said District spokeswoman Leticia Clark. “We’re looking at past interactions with students and staff to see if it relates to the comments made on the video.” Golden West College may release further information on their website, according to Clark. Monday, Olson emailed the Daily Pilot saying that she “was not in a good place emotionally after receiving so many disgusting emails for something that wasn’t even racist and was then skewed by a guy named Tony who filmed me without my permission.” Olson said in a part of the video that was not posted online, Kao asked her why she “hated him so much,” and she said that she does not hate him. Advocacy Week, which began on March 6 and ended on the 8, is a time for those with a cause to stand up and speak on it. Among those groups at Rio Hondo were the DREAMers, WOMXN’S, and the LGBTQ organizations that were given the platform of a three day course to talk about the rights that belong to their groups. Along with all this, Rio had the privilege of hosting Senior Preview Day. This event lasted two days, and gave chances to different neighboring high schools to send out their eager and prospective seniors to explore and get to know the campus. Much was going on, and one could see the excitement in the next generation of RHC students. The mid-quad cluttered with high school seniors being led around by fellow RHC staff and chaperones. Signs were held high to be seen, as large groups of various students roamed the campus and were given a chance to check out the different exhibits held like the WOMXN’s VIP organization. Some brave seniors even joined in on the movement for the “Men’s March” which had students walking down a path in red high heels. Booths were also set up with different clubs, such as JCPR and PUENTE offering information about the benefits of joining. Students were very willing and had much to say about how they felt about Rio Hondo and their personal goals as far as majors and Continued on page 2

The Womxn’s Advocacy Day event took place March 7 from 11 am to 3 pm in the Mid Quad at Rio Hondo. The event consisted of booths like “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” where males were encouraged to walk in high heels. A concept introduced by Frank Baird for the International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault, and Gender Violence in 2001. Baird explains, “the same violence that targets women also targets men because rape isn’t about sex, it’s about power, control, and violence.” Oralia Alcorta is a part of the Violence Intervention Program. She explained to the crowd how VIP is a group of advocates trying to bring sexual assault and domestic .

Advocacy Week: Advocating for LGBTQ Community DANIEL CAMPOS Reporter

The student union hosted a LGBTQ community event Thursday, March 8 in the Student Union Room.As advocacy week continues, the student union played a movie for a room full of about 15 students. Dreamer Diana Laureano, who deals with legislative affairs for the student government. Her effort to bring awareness to the program included mass emails, fliers, and involved lots of promotion. She moved to the country
at a young age to seek a better life for her and her family. Diana says she welcomes people of all aspects of life to be proactive in the community and is present for many events throughout the area. Advisor to the program, Magdalena Munoz was in a meeting during the event she helped set up, and was unavailable for comment. Earlier during the multi-day event, Dahlia, a self identified trans woman spoke to her peers about the struggle and hatred she has endured. Member of the LGBTQ community called the event a “shit show” and pointed out RHC’s very own club dedicated to them, was not enough involved nor invited to be part of the planning and final execution of the day.
Along with the activities, there were speakers such as poet LaSpeaksVolumes, who performed two poems. The first reminded women to love themselves. She said, “we’re here to celebrate women and in a world that has you under a microscope, the least you could do is love yourself, and tell yourself that you’re enough when nobody else says that you are,” she followed with, “ and I want to let every woman here know that you are beautiful and you are worth it and you better flaunt it”. She followed that up with her most popular poem, “Pretty Brown Girl,” Where she shared inspirational lines like, “you could never be duplicated, there’s always ever gonna be one you to do what you do so never doubt why you were created”. LaSpeaksVolumes left everyone
with chills and all who related clapped and snapped their fingers in praise. The crowd also heard from other speakers, such as Autumn Lewis and Dalia Lechon, two students of Rio Hondo. Lewis wrote a piece inspired by LaSpeaksVolumes’ poem Pretty Brown Girl and her experience growing up as a minority throughout grade school. Lechon is the leader of Spectrum and she spoke about her experience as a transgender female and how regardless of the setbacks in life, she has learned to love herself. This ignited her passion to help others to learn to love themselves. On day one of the twoday event, many powerful women took the stage and walked around the event supporting the cause and raised awareness.

careers. Leslie Bracamontes from Mountain View High School gave a statement. “I like the school very much actually it’s pretty cool,” Bracamontes said, “It is very close to home and I am looking to start in Summer!” Bracamontes told sources that she wants to become a future elementary school teacher. Another student, Sofia Garcia from Whittier High School enjoyed the Rio campus and the view it offers. “I love the campus and its view,” Garcia said, “I’m currently undecided, I am thinking about psychology, but then I want to do like magazine or journalism or even majoring in criminal justice.” Senior Angel Gamboa from Ruben Salazar High School commented, “I like the campus it’s nice it feels comfortable,” Gamboa said, “The
campus is very close to home and I’m looking to pursue a major in mechanical and or constructional engineering.” Another student from Ruben Salazar High School, Andres Gasca shared his thoughts. “I like the campus a lot and I want to come and start classes here,” Gasca said, “I literally live down the street from Rio and I’m looking to begin my automotive career working on cars.” Nothing but bright futures are ahead for these young individuals whose drive is very high in their pursuit for a better education and career. RHC also provided our guests with a special complimentary lunch. Overall it was successful week for Rio Hondo College, and the college can bet on new students registering for classes in the summer and fall.
Under a “false-flag” operation, Russian spies were found to be responsible for hacking the games of last year’s Winter Olympics. The cyber-attack, to which the games were held in South Korea, was first believed to be conducted by North Korea in an attempt to be framed by the Russian group. Russian spies wound up hacking hundreds of computers that were used by local authorities in the South Korean region. Though the attacks were closely monitored while the games continued, PyeongChang officials admit that a cyber-attack was first done during the February ninth opening ceremonies. Due to the complications from the hacking of the system, disruptions were placed on the Internet, broadcasting networks, and even on the Olympic’s official website. The reason behind the hacking of the system was because of the olympic committee banning a Russian team member competing in the curling sport. “On the one hand it is extremely disappointing when prohibited substances might have been used, but on the other hand it shows the effectiveness of the anti‑doping system at the games which protects the rights of all the clean athletes,” expressed the committee. Because of the harmful nature the ban held for the entire team of Russia, athletes from the country were still allowed to compete in the games but under the description “Olympic Athletes from Russia.” If by some chance Russian athletes did indeed win gold in any of the sport categories, the celebration of the victory and handing out of the medals would not be accompanied by the country’s anthem. Russian athletes were also not allowed to wear their country’s flag on any uniform worn during the Olympics because of the doping done by the curling athlete.

Wednesday, March 7 in the room LRC128, Rio Hondo College held a visit from seniors from different High Schools. Professor Michael Koger gave a brief presentation on what can you do with a major in English? He talked about how English can open multiple doors for your academic future. Many students from High School were engaging
in the conversation about how college differs from High School? Professor Koger told them that it is more work and pressure but it is not anything close to what High School is like. Many of the seniors also were asking about what if their parents do not agree with an English Major? He answered each and every question the High School students had with details and examples, which made them feel more confortable about college. It seemed as if all the High School students present at that presentation were ready to embark on the new journey, which is college. Almost at the end of Professor Michael Koger’s presentation he called up current student from Rio Hondo College named Alex Rodriguez. To speak about life as a student, struggles that he
Saudi Arabia Allows Women to Join The Military JOSE AHUMADA Reporter
jose.ahumada7466@my.riohondo.edu
For the first time, Saudi Arabia has allowed women to be able to apply for positions in the military after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman issued royal decrees to shake up the country’s military on Monday Feb. 26. Women have until Thursday to apply for the rank of soldier in several governances in Riyadh, Mecca, and Medina. Roles in the military for women do not appear to include combat, but will instead give them the opportunity to work in security. The decision was a part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 social program that was launched by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. The choice to enlist women in the military is a way for women’s rights to be introduced into the conservative Muslim kingdom. Women in these countries have to meet certain requirements to enlist. Some of these requirements include between 25-35 years old, having a high school education, being a Saudi citizen, and passing a mandatory medical check-up. They also have to pass various tests and interviews and be a certain height or weight. The women and their male guardians must also be living in the same place they are working in. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has also passed certain reforms that will allow women to drive for
the first time, open soccer games to female spectators, and open cinemas for the first time. Women will also be able to open up businesses without needing the consent of a male relative. Saudi women who are Muslim are still required to wear the Abaya and separated from males who are not their relatives. On Monday a certain number of military officers were removed. A woman, Tamadur bint Youssef al-Ramah became the deputy labor minister which became a rare high-level position for a woman in a conservative Muslim country. The promotion of a woman in the labor industry is part of an effort to promote a more modernized form of Islam. The 32-year old Crown Prince hopes to slowly keen the kingdom off oil exports, add more diversity to the economy, and create jobs while modernizing the country’s population. Since his rise to power 3 years ago, he has also removed a certain amount of apparent rivals to his throne. He has cracked down on some of the corruption in his country by removing certain apparent rivals to his throne.Reuters reports that Saudi contracts between the U.S. and Europe have been a source of corruption for a long time. Prince Mohammad has said that it is “unacceptable that high military spending has not translated into better, more efficient performance.”

Rodriguez also proceeded to talk about the same nervousness the High School students are feeling at the moment regarding the next step in their education to the same feeling he feels knowing this is his last semester at Rio Hondo College. He stated that he wants

Rodriguez also shared that he had lost both his parents when he was younger but that has made him realize that he can achieve the impossible. The message that Rodriguez left for the High School

Kao was not able to be reached for further comments this week. On Sunday, Olson told KCBSTV/2 that her students know she is not racist. Golden West officials stated on Facebook and Twitter that “It has recently come to our attention that there was a video posted on Facebook of a GWC faculty member making comments that the college does not condone or support. Golden West College believes in an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students.” Clark said that all faculty members and staff are to adhere to a code of conduct for employees that lists moral concepts to follow. Since the incident happened outside of campus, the district is looking at its internal policies to decide the best action. Kao said in a Facebook post on Sunday not to use his earlier post as a reason to spread hate and thanked people who offered positive messages toward his family. “We have no intention of seeking out or besmirching the offender’s personal life or career,” Kao wrote. “It is our hope the offender is aware and apologetic for what she has said to us, but all we can do is hope.”

Bones found in 1940 Likely Those of Amelia Earhart RAMON ALAVARDO Editor-in-Chief
ramon.alvarado7328@my.riohondo.edu
Bones found in a remote South Pacific island in 1940 have been re-examined and are now believed to belong to legendary American pilot Amelia Earhart. The bones were first examined in 1940 by physician D.W. Hoodless. The only conclusion Hoodless made was that the bones belonged to a man. University of Tennessee researcher, Richard Jantz began to question Hoodless’s claim because forensic analysis wasn’t nearly what it is today in 1940. “Forensic anthropology was not well developed in the early 20th century,” Jantz states in the papers in which his data was published. “There are many examples of erroneous assessments by anthropologists of the period. We can agree that Hoodless may have done as well as most analysts of the time could have done, but this does not mean his analysis was correct.” Using a computer program called Fordic that estimates the sex of someone
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION/ JAKE LAURELL Amelia Earhart’s body was never found and the circumstances of her disappearance seems to have finally been answered in the South Pacific.
through their remains, Jantz found that Hoodless was, indeed, wrong. The bones belonged to a woman.
After further examining the bones, Jantz found that they were more similar to Earhart’s than 99 percent of
other individuals in a reference group. Earhart’s body measurements were estimated
using old photographs and measuring her old clothing that has been preserved at Purdue University. Jantz then compared the body measurements to the seven bones that were found on the remote island in 1940. After comparing the bones and body measurements, Jantz said “until definitive evidence is presented that the remains are not those of Amelia Earhart, the most convincing argument is that they are hers.” Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 as she attempted to fly around the globe. Her disappearance has been one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history, with most believing she crashed into the ocean water. There have been no shortage of theories about Earhart’s disappearance in the past. One theory holds that Earhart was taken hostage by Japanese forces who had been expanding over the Pacific as World War II was taking shape. With her remains likely found now, conspiracy theorists have something new to theorize: how could Earhart have ended up on that remote island in the Pacific?
Gamer Website ‘Steam’ Streams Controversy Over Celebrating School-Shooters CESAR GONZALEZ Reporter
cesar.gonzalez6118@my.riohondo.edu
Steam, or steampowered. com, is an online gaming site where individuals connect through one access portal. Once there, players can create and play various online games whether it be on a PC, Mac, mobile device, or television. It is also a place to meet new people, join game groups, gain friends, and compete in the gaming world. Like any other huge online site, it features a downloadable app which allows one on the go gameplay. With over hundreds of games available for streaming, it really is gamer-heaven. So, what has been really catching the attention of different players throughout this community? Message boards and forums are the parts of the site which help different players better interact across
the globe. There, topics can be formed and discussed so it makes for searching a particular subject easy and accessible. With the overall recent events of school shootings with “school-shooters,” the Steam message board users are very awake and aware of what has been going on in spite of their busy online lives. Like any other argument that forms, opinions are made as well and sides are taken. The topic of being the skill set needed to be a school-shooter is brought into the light by players taking a stance on the matter. Different groups are formed, like one neo-Nazi “Atomwaffen Division,” which was flagged to the attention of online players and even Vice’s tech offshoot, Motherboard. In an online world where one’s voice can prompt for creating these kinds of hategroups attracts a certain type
of audience. One user, by the name of “School Shooter 66” have claimed, “Plan to shoot up Forest Lake state school,” the user said, “I plan to bring an M16, 3 mags, suicide pills and an axe.” This particular user belonged to a Steam group called “School Shooting Squad” located in Australia. One group has even go as far as to be called “Future School Shooter Material,” and has amassed over 106 members and pride themselves on becoming future school-shooters. The group represents itself as promoted, “a group dedicated to the bright young minds who are tortured by bullies,” going on to encourage prospective members to join if they “want to be a future school shooter.” Others create Steam groups dedicated to past school shooters like Elliot Rodger who killed six people at the Santa Barbara University school campus.
Another Steam group called themselves “School Shoot Gang” and had a picture icon of the Columbine shooter Dylan Klebold. Other groups are fully dedicated to killers like Elliot Rodger, George Zimmerman, and even Charles Manson. One user that belonged to a Steam group that called the California-shooter, Elliot Rodger, an American hero stated, “I am like Elliot Rodger. Don’t you worry guys, I will prove it!” A Steam user back in December 7, 2017, named William Edward Atchinson made his racist and murder-hungry comments public on Steam’s forums before he took to action and killed two students and himself in New Mexico. When using the search engine on the Steam website, terms like “Nazi” brings about 7,893 results, and 4,520 results for “N-word.” While some gamers argue that
video games aren’t to blame for such violent acts, others oppose that they are a prime cause for school shootings. Valve (valvesoftware. com), the company that owns and runs Steam, is based in Bellevue, Washington, and has not made any actions or comments regarding the matter. The main concern here seems to be a precautionary one, but through it all freedom of speech and assembly rights are protected under laws. However, to what extent are Steam users willing to violate the Rules and Regulations to make a point? Details about Rules and Regulations can be found at https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article. php?ref=4045-USHJ-3810. Hopefully soon Valve can put an end to such behaviors online, and perhaps prevent more school shootings like the one in Parkland, FA.

Geek Squad Working Closely with the FBI RAMON ALAVARDO Editor-in-Chief
ramon.alvarado7328@my.riohondo.edu
The FBI has been working closely with Best Buy’s computer repair service, Geek Squad over the last decade. In an investigation launched by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a digital Civil right group, it was discovered that Geek Squad employees have been playing the role of informants for the FBI. Documents found by the EFF show that the Geek Squad had an entire process to follow if illegal material was found on computers that were brought in for repairs. If illegal content was believed to be found, the device would be sent to the FBI’s Louisville office where it would be reviewed. If the material found was indeed illegal, the device would be sent to an FBI office closer to the owner of the device and it would be investigated further.
Reports from the EFF show that the FBI classified Geek Squad employees as “CHS,” or confidential human sources. In January 2017, California Doctor Mark Rettenmaier was arrested for child pornography after a helpful tip from the Geek Squad was made. Rettenmaier had his device sent to Kentucky for repairs when pornographic images of a child were found. The EFF believes Geek Squad employees may be hunting for illegal material, rather than just stumbling upon it. Pornographic images found on Rettenmaier’s computer were found in an “unallocated space, which typically requires forensic software to find,” according to the EFF. In a statement issued by a Best Buy spokesperson, it has been confirmed that at least four Geek Squad employees have received payments from the FBI, with one totalling $500. Paying Geek Squad employees for finding illegal material can be troubling. If the FBI continues to reward
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION/ JAKE LAURELL It has now been confirmed that the FBI has a working relationship with Geek Squad employees. Last year, this partnership led to the arrest of a man who had child pedophilia on his computer.
Geek Squad employees for helpful tips, the Geeks may begin to hunt for illegal material on devices they are meant to fix. EEF has stated that the Geek Squad and FBI could already be violating people’s Fourth Amendment rights, which protects from unreasonable searches and seizures.
Geek Squad employees have been in legal trouble in the past. Workers have been caught sharing pornography found on customer devices with themselves. The computer repair group has also had employees accused of finding customers’ nude images and posting them online.
In a statement released by the EFF, the digital civil rights group says it “plans to challenge the FBI’s stonewalling in court later this spring.” It’ll be interesting to see if anything new between the FBI and Geek Squad comes to light. It’ll be even more interesting to see if any punishments are made.
Comcast, Reigning “Worst Company in America,” Seeks To Acquire Sky plc DANTE LOPEZ BENNET Copy Editor
dante.lopezbennett9611@my.riohondo.edu
February 27 - Comcast Telecommunication Company has submitted its bid for Sky plc, a London headquartered media, and telecommunications company despite opposition from other media giants and what is more than likely public disapproval. Solidifying its role as a challenger to media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s expansion in the field is what Comcast has indicated as its newest
strategy in an ambitious effort to maximize efficiency. The massive bid of 22 billion pounds is fresh off of the Consumerist’s annual electing of the worst companies in America, in which Comcast has emerged first and time again during the last couple of years. Looking to merger watchdogs and enforcement agencies for how such a report will affect Comcast’s bid, consumers will have to wait to find out as the battle plays out in courts and in the public eye across a number
of public hearings in which conglomerate counsel will go toe-to-toe. The battle for who will hold more of a presence in the European theatre of media has undoubtedly become a major spectacle playing out in the evening news programs of every continent. As the Murdoch vs. Comcast narrative unfolds, the Comcast’s standing as one of the most unpopular companies amongst consumers appears to be as insurmountable a disadvantage as can possibly be. Finding itself in
the first place as the “worst company in America” is tantamount to being in boiling hot lava only, as authorizers are sure to bring this into question as the company attempts to broaden its presence in Europe and secure the billion dollar acquisition. Sky plc, with its many footholds and bases of operations in Spain, Austria, Italy, Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, is a pan-European and telecommunications company with a 2016 estimated revenue of 12.92 billion pounds.
As the fight intensifies between American media companies who look to Sky plc as much more than a “satellite business,” media giants have demonstrated themselves to be once again dedicated to attaining more revenue from the European sector of the world by any means necessary. Much to the dismay of government officials tasked with overseeing fair play, things are only heating up
Researchers Find “Oldest Tattoos” on Egyptian Mummies MICHAEL KHURAIBET Reporter
michael.khuraibet1864@my.riohondo.edu
Archaeologists at the British Museum have discovered what they believe are examples of the world’s oldest tattoos, according to NPR. The two mummies — one male and one female — have been in the Museum’s possession for over 100 years. Nevertheless, experts have only recently been able to identify the strange markings on their bodies. Initially, scientists thought the markings were “meaningless smudges,” having little historical significance. It wasn’t until Oxford professor Renee Friedman thought to use infrared
cameras to examine them. Funnily enough, Friedman was using the cameras to work on an unrelated project. “I said, hmm, why don’t I try my little camera on these well-preserved bodies,” she told NPR. The female had a pattern of four repeating S-shapes along her right shoulder. Friedman told NPR, “Those marks are known from the contemporary pottery at the time, though we don’t know what it means.” Friedman went on to say, “…her markings are more associated with cult knowledge, knowing the proper moves, knowing the proper rituals and spells.” According to BBC News, scientists say the male died
of a stab wound when he was between 18 and 21 years old. They found he had dark smudges on his arm like the female, which they thought nothing of. To their surprise, the infrared scan revealed them to be tattoos, described as “two slightly overlapping horned animals.” Friedman said finding tattoos on a male was unusual for the time. According to many Egyptologists, tattoos were most commonly a trend that women followed. Finding the tattoos on a male of the time, however, “was a real game changer in our perceptions of tattooing,” Friedman said. Researchers believe the tattoo ink was most likely
soot. Since it was picked up by the infrared cameras, the ink is likely to be carbon-based. Friedman believes the tattoos, like in modern times, were meant as either decoration or for expression. “They’re in parts of the body that would’ve been on daily display,” she said. The fashion climate at the time including “colorful clothing, they had colorful leather. They probably looked fabulous.” According to British Museum curator Daniel Antoine, in an interview with Smithsonian, the tattoos give more evidence to what life was like for these individuals back then. Known as “Gebelein Man A” and “Gebelein Wom-
an” (named for the region of Egypt they were discovered), the mummies are estimated to have lived between 3351 and 3017 BC. Antoine believes that time will indicate “their status, their preoccupations, their special knowledge.” Amazingly, BBC News pointed out how the mummies were not given any special treatment in their burial. They were placed in shallow graves without traditional mummification or preservation, but were well kept thanks to the heat, salinity, and dryness of the desert. However, under different conditions, it’s likely the two never would’ve lasted as long as they have.

Her Worst Enemy is Herself: Jessica Jones Season 2 NOAH GARCIA News Editor
noah.garcia3720@my.riohondo.edu
This second season of Jessica Jones, is a 13 episode introspective into the Main character’s psyche as she learns to accept her own feelings.. There’s a certain line that is the most descriptive of the shows message it’s that, “Hero isn’t a bad word jessica, it’s just someone who gives a shit and does something about it.” Jessica Jones Krysten Ritter’s character has never considered herself a Hero, a good person or even a ‘normal’ human being. Due to her self loathing behavior she blames herself for any negativity in her life, which causes more negatively, which leads into a spiral of self hate and general misanthropy. This entire season isn’t about her learning what a ‘hero’ is or who she is really, it’s about her-for the first time in her life- opening up to exploring who she is as a person by finally confronting her emotional issues. While there are roadblocks in this journey, the show doesn’t really have a solid main antagonist. If anything, Jessica herself is her
own antagonist. She works so hard to push every possibility of good around her, yet at the same time it’s always contrasted by her need to be loved by others and herself. Because of the magnificent villain in the first season, David Tennant’s Kilgrave, the series knows it’s too soon to introduce another ‘big bad’ for her to go against, so the seasons main character arch is Jessica simply learning to legitimately learning to truly open herself up to others. What really puts this season over the top is the fact that it keeps what works/ and a bit of what doesn’t and builds upon it. So the aspects of the show are are great gain further development and attention, and the details that don’t work best are made more apparent and help to make it obvious why the showrunners and pushing certain characters/ plot points in a certain way. Jessica Jones is one of my favorite Marvel/Netflix series and although it lacks a bit in action, it’s presented its audiences with deeply sophisticated characters that have grown in interesting ways throughout the shows run.
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION/ NOAH GARCIA Jessica Jones uses the heroes journey to have her open herself up emotionally to other and to learn and grow into a person who can love herself, and is truly open to love from others. While she is one of the most explored characters in the Marvel Netflix universe, there is still a lot to see in this characters.
A Well Rounded End to a Never Ending Series: Star Wars Rebels Finale
PHOTO EDIT/ NOAH GARCIA Star Wars Rebels may be over, but the revitalization it’s giving to the SW expanded universe, and the endless entertainment it’s provided to its fans everywhere, is never ending.

Because Star Wars is structurally built to continue forever, there will always be
more Star Wars stories for fans to enjoy. Some of the entries into the franchise have had a rocky start ; mixed with uneven characters and inconclusive story arch’s and endings. Rebels, is an entry
into the SW mythos that is filled with such wonderful character development, expansion of the SW lore as well as a story that starts strong and ends strong. While there are definitely places that his
story to continue, they could stop here if they wanted and it would still be satisfying. There is so much to talk about here, from the fantastically climaxed character arcs, to the effects and lighting used, from the clever and interesting action sequences to the staging and lighting of the animation( the last episodes being a great example of how to light, frame and construct sets/characters for 3d animation). But I’d like to focus one one aspect of the episode that was my favorite : the Idea that the downfall of the darkside will forever be it’s hubris. Throughout its run, classic SW characters were brought into the Rebels to mixed/positive response. But the little, but intense, interaction between Ezra and the Emperor is brilliant. Of course the Emperor wouldn’t spend any physical effort on the “naive young padawan”. He knows little about the boy and is overconfident that his powers can easily destroy his spirit. Over the course of the show we see Ezra deal with
temptation and corruptions itself, so he was able to resist any dark side machinations. While Ezra is forced to face an option that would make him happy; he chooses the family he’s made and the the truth he can make a reality, rather than the blissful lie that would of ultimately lead to his destruction. At the end of the day, all corruption, devastation and malice is repealed by hope. Hope that your sacrifice will make a difference. Hope that your voice will reach thousands. Hope that one day, your actions can result in thousands of people doing the same. And this entire series is one giant love letter to the idea of Hope and the persistence of the human spirit. So Ezra has shown that resilience to the darkside(the willingness to choose the peace of tomorrow over the suppressions of others) is all about hope. And that has been one of my favorite ideals that Star Wars Rebels had presented. (p.s. I love Ahsoka and I knew in my heart that’d she still be alive )

Longtime “Star Wars” Composer Exits After Episode IX JAIME APARICIO Reporter
jaime.aparicio2474@my.riohondo.edu
Famous music writer and composer John Williams plans to move on from the “Star Wars” series after he writes the score for the last installment of the current trilogy. When asked about being involved in episode nine, Williams had this to say: “We know J.J. Abrams is preparing one now for next year that I will hopefully do for him, and I look forward to it. It will round out a series of nine and be quite enough for me.” Williams, who won an academy award for his work on the 1977 original film, has written and composed the score for all the core installments in the “Star Wars” saga, with the exception of “Rogue One,” “The Clone Wars” animated film, and the upcoming “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” Although John Powell will be writing the music for the Solo film, Williams will come in and write the main theme for the famous scoundrel character. “What I will do is offer this to John, and to [director] Ron Howard, and if all parties are happy with it, then I will be happy. … John [Powell] will complete the score. He will write all the rest of the themes and all of the other material, which I’m going to be very anxious to hear,” said Williams. When “The Force Awakens” was first announced in 2014, it was also revealed that Williams would be returning to the franchise even after finishing his work on the prequel trilogy that concluded back in 2005. After production on “The Force Awakens” was done, Williams was asked if he’d be returning for the following installment to which he asked the question if the character Rey would be making a return as well. After hearing the confirmation that Rey would

Charmed Reboot Finds Final Sister ANAMARIA APARICIO Reporter
anamaria .aparicio2474@my.riohondo.edu
“Charmed” first hit television screens across America in the late 90’s and came to a close in 2006 after eight seasons. The show that is based around the three Halliwell sisters discovering they are powerful witches coming together to fight evil with each having a special power, will soon make a comeback to our screens with a new rendition. The reboot that landed with The CW is described as, “This fierce, funny, feminist reboot of the original series
centers on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches. Between vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done.” The “Charmed” reboot hadn’t officially been sealed with the hunt for the last sister still in the process. Now, with the casting of the youngest and final sister Madison, taken on by Sarah Jeffery, the filming for the reboot should be in the works. It is still unknown whether they will remain as the Halliwell sisters or be given a new name to start fresh with
the show. What is known is that the show will be set in present time. Madison is described as a college freshmen who is more interested in fitting in and joining a sorority than using her powers. If the sister’s specialty stays the same like in the original “Charmed”, then her power would be seeing into the future. Casted as the oldest of the bunch is Madeleine Mantock. Her character goes by the name of Macy, a brilliant and driven girl. Macy’s special power would be telekinesis, the same as the original oldest Halliwell sister. Mel, the middle child,
will be played by actress Melonie Diaz. Her character is an outspoken activist whose speciality is freezing time, also much like the original charmed sister. However, with this new series on the way, fans of the original series are skeptical of this rendition. They have hashtags on twitter like #STOPCharmedReboot, where they speak of being uncertain with the new plot. They more so encourage a revival of the show with the hashtag #CharmedRevival, where the main idea is to bring back the original cast.
Guillermo del Toro to Launch Scholarship that Helps Mexican Filmmakers JAIME APARICIO Reporter
jaime.aparicio2474@my.riohondo.edu
Oscar winning writer and director Guillermo del Toro will launch a scholarship that will help all mexican aspiring directors. Along with fellow directors Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro G. Inarritu, del Toro helps produce films on a regular basis from up and coming mexican directors. “If we change a life, if we change a history, we change a generation,” says del Toro in regards to the $60,000 scholarship being provided to
the potential cadidate(s). Del Toro, who’s films have been aspiring younger generations from his homeland of Guadalajara, Mexico, has been pushing the envelope in filmmaking since his directorial debut with the film “Cronos” back in 1993. Since then, del Toro has been incoporating a mix of practical effects with stunning computer generated imagery that end up producing a stellar shot no matter what film is being watched. Del Toro has always been an ispiring filmmaker, but with his latest film “The Shape of Water”
winning a total of four academy awards at this year’s Oscars, including best director and best feature film, he has only taken one step closer to being included among the greats in Hollywood. Del Toro himself will help oversee the Guadalajara based fest that will grant the scholarship. “The first push is very important,” says del Toro. With the money granted to the future filmmaker, it can only ensure that the creativity will be supported with the funding needed in order to produce a well-made and finished product.
In addition to the scholarship, del Toro is also bringing his now famous “At House with Monsters” art exhibit to Guadalajara that was recently viewed in the past year at Los Angeles, California. The exhibit features many rare pieces of art and scultures that are inspired by the classic Universal Monster films of old and some from his own line of films like “Pans Labyrinth” and “Hellboy.” Del Toro’s next project will be the “Pacific Rim” sequel “Pacific Rim Uprising” due out in theaters March 23.

Alex Rodriguez: The Story OLIVIA VENEGAS
Opinion/Lifestyles Editory
olivia.venegas4091@my.riohondo.edu
Alex Rodriguez is a 25-year-old, Rio Hondo College student who is currently on his last semester, ready for transfer and ready to start a new journey. He has desires of attending to USC or UCLA; he has applied to nine schools in total, four Cal States and five UC’s. But he would tell you that it has not been easy quite bit. At just the age of two, Alex lost his mother in a tragic car accident. After losing his mother, Rodriguez then lost his father but not in an accident that ended his life. His father abandon him soon after. He was then taken to Mexico by his uncles with purposes of obtaining income by him being an American Citizen. Unfortunately, that did not happen for the young Rodriguez and he then become homeless at the age of eight. At eight years old, Rodriguez was an orphan, moved to a country where he only knew his uncles, and then was kicked out completely to the cold streets. Starving and cold, he tried to find shelter inside of an abandoned warehouse that was roofless. He would search for food inside of trashcans but whatever he salvaged was never enough to satisfy his always-hungry stomach. By 12 years old, Rodriguez recalls realizing this was when he had to become an adult. Searching for food and shelter for his self. His young trauma was meet with thoughts of suicide. He he contemplated suicide more then one time in different ways but could never actually do it. He continued to say that “I always have felt throughout my life that this cannot be it, there has to be more to life from what

I’ve seen, I have never seen a sunny day”. After enough traumas for a lifetime, Rodriguez finally came in contact with a family member. His aunt from his mother’s side bought a plane
ticket and brought him back to the U.S. in 2006. Scared and not knowing any English, Rodriguez entered Arroyo High School as a freshman. Although he was very
disadvantaged, Rodriguez remained the fighter he always has been. He took it upon himself to learn English by buying a dictionary in both languages English and Spanish. He began to struc-
sive, and those who take it to personal and over analyze everything. If you’re anything like me then you’ll over analyze the entire situation. However, I’ve learned over the years how to let it help me grow as a person rather than let it discourage me from doing something. Nobody likes their flaws repeated to them, but it’s necessary in order to become a better friend, employee,
or in general a human being. Other people always see things better from on outside perspective than we see ourselves. We might not even notice those minor quirks we have. First you have to contemplate whether or not this person’s opinion really matters to you. If this is the type of person who likes to complain about everything and everyone, is their opin-
ion really worth taking into consideration? Don’t let this person define you. Unless you know they want nothing but the best for you, I wouldn’t take it to personal. Another exception would be in a work setting. Let’s not forget that these people want the best in their field and if they believe you can excel with some changes, then it’s best to take it serious. Don’t let insecurities get in the way
ture sentences and learned apostrophes, adverbs, verbs, past tense, etc. In 2010 he graduated from El Monte High School with a 2.5 GPA. After high school he attended Rio Hondo College for only two semesters and dropped out. Working a full-time job and hanging out with bad influences such as gangs took over his time and his desires for a higher life. In 2014 at the age of 22, he was caught with a group of gang member and was sent to Los Angeles County Jail for four days, which he described as the worse experience of his life. Rodriguez decided then and there in jail that he would turn his life around. He would cleanse himself of the bad choices that brought him to jail and reignite the fighting flames he had as child on the streets of Mexico. In spring of 2015 he came back to Rio Hondo College to continue where he left off, he stopped hanging out with his old friends and moved out from the area he was living at. Since then he has picked up his GPA to a 3.6 and he also has one of his academic essays published in Rio Hondo College Writer’s Resource Center Presents 2017 Assemblages Conference Proceedings. Alex Rodriguez has been already accepted to Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Los Angeles and UC Riverside so far, he is still waiting for the rest. His final thoughts he shared are, “Life might beat you down and leave you on the floor but the beauty is the comeback, you have to embrace the struggle and appreciate in order to understand that good things happened to those who wait but not to those who contemplate”.
Constructive Criticism on Yourself
ANAMARIA APARICIO Reporter
anamaria.aparicio8532@my.riohond.edu
Accepting constructive criticism on yourself can be a tough situation. Millions of questions start racing through your head trying to understand the advice given. Everyone reacts to these situations in a different way. There are those who can calmly accept criticism, those who immediately get defen-
of becoming successful. Asking questions on how to improve are always a big help. This way you let them know you’re listening and you get a better understanding of their perspective. Giving feedback is just as difficult as receiving it, so making sure you don’t get defensive or lash out is key. Constructive criticism is of value to understand weakness and areas of improvement.

It seems as of more recently Anime, the Japanese styled animation, has been creeping its way into the popular culture. With the help of reality star Kim Kardashian and co-star of Marvel’s Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan, anime has been a trending topic all over social media. Jordan was confronted about old tweets that had to do with his interest in anime and how he was still living with his parents. Jordan’s response was “First of All I’m 6ft and they live with ME, put some respeck on my name. LOL… aaaand goku & naruto are real ones lol.” And that wasn’t the last of it. Jordan was still called out for only liking the mainstream animes, like Dragon Ball Z and Naruto. With his next response he even took shots at some of the posers, “Nah that was a softball for the anime uneducated.” So, it may be safe to say that Michael B. Jordan is a die-hard fan. Kardashian added to the growing hype of celebrity love for anime in February
by showing off her freshly dyed bubblegum pink hair on twitter and claiming her inspiration was anime. She
specific inspiration was from a brand-new anime called “Danger in the Franxxx” who’s first episode was

cool now?”. This set off some hardcore anime fans who took it upon themselves to show that anime has always been “cool” and not just now cause some A-list celebrities tweeted about it. Some fans were mad because it’s something they follow dearly and while growing up, even got bullied for. So, for it to become gentrified, so to say, it can be almost a little offensive. I got into anime a little later in my life compared to most die-hard fans. Around my sophomore year of high school I was introduced into my first anime show, “Afro Samurai”. This anime drew my attention by its cover picture of the main character Afro Samurai, carrying a bloody katana and a red headband around his head, that didn’t seem to end. The series entire soundtrack was even produced by The RZA, member of the Wu-Tang Clan. This show opened a whole other universe of shows and movies that I didn’t even know existed. Besides my late blooming interest into these type of animated cartoons, anime has always had a very strong following .

The Fight Does Not Stop at a Sign OLIVIA VENEGAS Opinion/Lifestyles Editor
olivia.venegas4091@my.riohondo.edu
In September 2016, California became the first state to pass a law of all single occupancy restrooms include all genders. This law took then took effect March 2016. However, this does not mean that all restrooms are “all gender”, only single occupancy restrooms are. Members of the LGBQT community may still face the uncertainty when using restrooms with multiple occupancy. Gender is beyond the two dynamic spectrum of male and female. It is not a simple factor that can be classified into only two groups. It is more complex and exclusive than those who comfortable identify as male or female are aware of. Though this restroom law is a couple years old, I have recently come across people who are still against this law. At my old job, we had two restrooms, one was multiply occupancy restroom with a baby changer labeled “womens”, and the other was a single occupancy restroom with a lock labeled “all gender”. There were times where I would overhear comments against the restrooms and other times where I hear about my coworkers being yelled at by angry white men, against the all gender restroom. This restroom was not al-

ways labeled “all gender” and was labeled a men’s restroom until recently. To these men I say: “It is all gender and with that the sign includes you, and all other individuals who identify as any gender other than just male and female”. It does not exclude the male and female gender but it includes and recognizes those who relate to the broader gender spectrum. This law created a sense of comfort to those who have experienced harrasment and judgment for using the “wrong” restroom. The fight for equality does not end at a bathroom sign. Many trans men and women are harrased and even killed because they are trans and do not recieve any jus-
tice. There is more to be done for trans individuals. The suicide rate among individuals of the LGBQT community is much highher than most. Hormones and surgeries for trans individuals is not included in majority of insurance policies. It is not enough to see an “all gender” restroom sign and believe there is finally peace and justice. The issues of gender are just as broad and complex as gender itself. The boyband consists of eight members: Kevin Abstract, Matt Champion, Ameer Vann, Merlyn Wood, Rodney Taylor, Dom McLennon, Russell Boring, and Ciaran “bearface” McDonald. They are redefining what it means to be a boyband.
The Texas raised founder, Abstract, connected with the members online through a notable Kanye West fan forum. “In the two years since its conception, they have released the ambitiously multi-genre All-American Trash mixtape, followed by their captivatingly honest, riled-up-rap and warm-chorus-filled debut album “Saturation”. The band is an inspiration as they aspire to create their own record label, and produce other content under the same brand. What makes this band stand out is that they are a close knit group of friends. They see each other as family and encourage each member to be creative.
Not to mention their amazing music. I love all their albums and would highly recommend their music. They are the voice of the newer generation, breaking down stereotypes and gender norms as well as including societal critique. Brockhampton is a breath of fresh air with all these new Hip hop artists on the rise who baffle me at the amount of success they achieve with music and lyrics that lack originality and depth. Each artist speaks about the trials and tribulations they have faced so far in life and they also mock the critics who constantly complain about how the young men frequently touch upon the subject of being gay. In one of their tracks from Saturation II, JUNKY Abstract raps in the first verse, ““Why you always rap about being’ gay?” ‘Cause not enough n---s rap and be gay.” The entire band is highly efficient in talking about uncomfortable subjects. With this line, Abstract speaks for those who do not feel they can do so. They also feel representation is important. They note how in pop, there are gay and bi icons, but the same cannot be said for Hip hop. I will be anticipating what else Brockhampton has in store for their fans and the critics. As for now, check out their latest album available everywhere, “Saturation III.”
