For the third weekend in a row, Rio Hondo Speech and Debate has participated in a tournament to strengthen their game. This time it was at the 2018 PSCFA “Felicia Coco”
Spring Championships hosted by Cal State Long Beach the weekend of Feb. 23-25. Rio Hondo’s Speech and Debate team was there on Friday February 23 to engage in the IPDA and NFA Lincoln Douglas Debate. They arrived headstrong
with a team of 13 ready to compete against 18 other colleges and universities. At
the end of the day, Rio Hondo brought home two medals. Saul Garcia, President of the Speech and Debate team, broke into the elimination rounds winning a bronze medal in Open NFA Lincoln Douglas Debate. Tien Ngo a new mem-
ber of the team, was able to accomplish getting a Bronze medal in Rookie IPDA Debate. Rio Hondo’s Speech and Debate team is now focused on contending in the CCCFA State Championships in Sacramento the weekend of March 7-10.
Triple Shooting Outside Whittier Bar ANAMARIA APARICIO Reporter

Early in the morning of Saturday, Feb. 24 police responded to a triple shooting outside of a Whittier bar located on the 13200 Block of Imperial Highway.
This incident occurred at 12:55 a.m. when an argument between a security guard and patrons took place. ABC 7 News was able too get a statement from the sherrif handling the case. “The argument continued into the parking lot,
where it appears several people started shooting at each other with handguns,” the sherrif said. The security guard, a man and a woman were injured by gunfire. The 30-year-old man, identified as Adrian Anthony
Quesada, was shot and drove away from the incident before crashing into a center median on Imperial Highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was retrieved from his car. The 41-year-old security guard and 25-year old woman
were transported to the hospital where they are expected to survive. As of March 6, investigators are still trying to decide who started the shooting and whether or not the security guard acted out of self-defense.

New to the world’s stage by way of default, is the undisputed and rowdy police officer of the world. Three-thousand miles long with a population of 323 million and annual defense budget of 700 billion dollars, is the United States of America. Thrust into the superstardom of being the world’s most accomplished superpower despite his inferiority complex. It’s a pity, that he will never be as great as the imaginary company he keeps, because little does he know that pride is meaningless even if he wakes up with a hundred acres of wood. With regards to the current climate in which congress conducts its business, little does he know of the extent to which things have only spiraled out of control because of his problem. In this age of militarization, it seems as though improper thoughts are the only things being mobilized. There’s an air of reverie reserved for technologies meant to bring about the end of life like never before seen in American politics. We’d go so far as to call it a perverse fixation, ironic as it is, being that we live in the most interconnected era of human existence. It turns out that the 700 billion dollars or so that the current administration spends on defense, can be used for a variety of different things. Amongst some of which are ending homelessness and correcting climate change. Here we are in a period of peace to be capitalized upon, where we are less war-torn than ever and more interconnected than has been possible in generations now past. Despite this fact, governments seem much more content to sit back and be independently all capable of destroying one another than being champions of communication. Have we not learned our lesson having to do with what it means when people are left to their own devices literally? They become removed from reality, and warmonger, orchestrating pain when and wherever they see fit. They forget what it means to represent the wishes and lives of those that they govern. To this confusion of the times, we can’t help but wea-
rily ponder that fear was at once when made, and today as unchallenged, a danger. Are we so desensitized as to no longer be uneasy at being on the brinks of the fragile ice like during the cold war? Today, we can’t help but be confused by the way in which Congress does its duty. They’ll declare war on such abstract things as poverty and terror with virtually no plan as to how they should conduct their forces forward unto victory in the classrooms, on the streets, and in the deserts of random nations. Allocation of resources is where the emphasis is placed, yet we sail our frigates across the ocean and fly our bombers above other countries as if Katrina and Maria didn’t put our citizens underwater and onto the rooftops in need of an evacuation. We act like for the cost of our artillery, we couldn’t supply low-income neighborhoods with a glimpse of hope, and lessen the monthly death toll in places like the south side of Chicago so that it doesn’t rival that of Afghanistan’s. We act like we couldn’t immediately combat what things are really a threat like militant supremacists. We sit, idly buy million dollar spaceships for nuclear payloads, and tote weapons of (predominantly) mosque destruction, making the midwest as muddied as the middle east. It’s funny indeed, how certain things just don’t add up. Our enemies of these great and superior-to-all United States can eat lead, like somehow, the residents of Flint haven’t already been drinking it for years now. I reckon that Dylan Roof sat in the congregation as afraid and alienated from a discussion that needed to be had like leaders at the UN delegation and strategists on Capitol Hill do. For reasons such as this, it seems as though these days, all locations but those closest to the realms of our hearts are the ones worth fighting for. How we can hope to balance a budget and create a better quality of living for our citizens when the things we buy are meant to do the very opposite for others of nations elsewhere, is a predicament that beckons karma closer by the hour.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is revoking its investigation into credit agency Equifax, which allowed hackers to access the personal information of more than 145 million Americans. This raised questions as to why the ones who oversee the nation’s top consumers are not vigorously looking into one of the worst data breaches in the country’s history. “The bureau’s interim director, White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney, has taken us through the looking glass by deciding not to issue subpoenas or seek sworn testimony from Equifax execs.” The CFPB set aside plans to run on the ground tests to see how efficiently Equifax protects data. The agency said stated, “the bureau is looking into Equifax data breach and response. Reports to the contrary are incorrect.” Consumer advocates caught on to a pattern of Mulvaney crippling the CFPB’s regulatory role over the financial services industry. Senior legislative counsel for the Center for Responsible Lending, Yana Miles said Mulvaney “is finding new ways to sabotage the consumer bureau.” Trump’s contempt for the CFPB has been made clear. CFPB has returned about $12 million to vexed consumers since their opening. “House Democrats have formally requested that Equifax extend free credit protection and identity theft from one year to three years following Equifax’s massive loss of 145.5 million Americans’ private information. Democratic members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform said that ‘one year of protection is inadequate.” Tomer Weingarten, CEO, and co-founder of SentinelOn says,“Organizational security needs real attention from the CEO and top leadership in order to start mapping risk in the enterprise. Business decisions must be heavily influenced by cyber risk and potential outcomes.

“Just to show culture for Black History Month, today’s the last day of Black History Month,” Black Student Union President and co-founder, Keira Presly explained prior to the Black Excellence event, “but Black history’s not just a month, it’s everyday. So, that’s why we decided to go ahead and have it at the end of the traditional month.” Vice President of BSU, Autumn Lewis hit the stage set in the lower quad first to introduce the first guest speaker. The Black Excellence event got off to a fiery start with the strong-spoken Trimaine Davis, who serves as the Coordinator of the African American Resource Center at Cal State Fullerton. “I know a lot of you may look and say ‘well Black History Month became Black History Month in 1976,’” Davis said, “but you got to remember it was 50+ years where it was National Negro History Week. So, today we are honoring 92 years of black excellence. It’s always a phenomenal thing to celebrate Black history because this month is our chance to be unapologetic about explaining the truth and not necessarily going into what is the societal norm or the stereotypes that are fed about Black images and black people.” Davis had the crowd of all colors tuned into his every
word as he shared his knowledge with Rio staff, students and visitors. He ended his speech by challenging those listening to him speak. “For those of us who believe that BHM is something that we cherish, that we honor in February because February is the shortest month of the year, I’m going to challenge you to dig deeper,” Davis said as he scanned through the crowd. “It’s great to have [events] like this… Often times what happens, is once this event is over, so is our celebration, so is our wanting to learn more about the customs and the cultures that we just got celebrating. So, my challenge to all of you here is to keep that going, keep that moving forward, because as long as we’re open-minded and we keep a lens for Black history, we’ll understand humanity more. And as we understand humanity, the more equipped we’ll be to solve problems in society.” Spoken-word artist and poet LaSpeaksVolumes, who just received her Master’s degree in education at the University of Southern California last year was also present at the Black Excellence event. She started off her speech by telling the crowd to be themselves and to not let others’ tell their stories for them. LaSpeksVolumes moved the crowd much like Davis did, but LaSpeaksVolume did it with more rhythm as she passionately read her poem,
Black Women’s Fight. “Pretty brown girl/ Why you frown girl?/ Is it that everybody tryna put you down girl/You don’t ever let em take away your crown girl,” LaSpeaksVolumes rhymed as she focused on the young black women in the crowd. It wasn’t just the young black women feeling LaSpeaksVolumes words, though. She was being cheered on by everyone there for her motivating words and witty word-delivery. “Baby girl you better than that/Baby girl stand tall where you at/ and if they try to give you hell, you just give it right back.” It was a successful Black Excellence event for the relatively new Black Student Union at Rio Hondo. The Vice President of BSU, Lewis spoke on the outcome of the event. “It was awesome, I loved the speakers,” Lewis joyfully said. “I was so impressed by how a lot of people stopped by and that’s what made me even happier. That’s what I wanted, people to listen! This event had a lot of people participate who needed to be heard. The black population on campus is so small and under-represented, this event showed that we here!” The Black Student Union club was just started up last fall, but with strong club leadership they will surely continue to make an impact on the Rio campus.
Those charges included tampering with physical evidence and government documents in regards to false reports of kidnapping and sexual assault. The false reports were made last March.Harmon was reported missing to the Denison Police Department on March 8, 2017, after witnesses noticed the door to her vehicle was ajar with belongings scattered on the ground. A few hours later, Harmon walked into a church wearing only a shirt, bra and underwear. She said she had been kidnapped by three Black men wearing ski masks according to local news outlets. Harmon claimed the men assaulted her and raped her. However, investigators noticed some inconsistencies in Harmon’s story. Medical examiners did not find any trace of Harmon’s rape. The medical examiners also noticed that the rips and holes in Harmon’s jeans were not consistent with her injuries. There also was the detail of no suspects being identified or arrested in the case. According to the Huffington Post: “Harmon told police two weeks later that she made up the rape and that cuts on her body were self-inflicted.” Harmon told the police that she was upset after she had a fight with her husband and cut herself and her clothes. She fabricated the rape story so that her family would not be upset with her. Denison Police Chief Jay Burch said that Harmon’s false claims hurt the community, especially the Black residents. “Breana’s hoax was also insulting to our community and especially offensive to the African-American community due to her description of the so-called suspects in her hoax.” Burch said. Harmon will be sentenced on March 20. Her deal has two possible punishments: regular probation or deferred adjudication, which often involves treatment or community service. Neither requires jail time.

City Council Meeting On The Upcoming Mayoral Candidates.

Wednesday, at approximately 7:06 p.m. Feb. 28, 2018, the city council meeting began with the League of Women Voters president, Margo Reeg, opening up with regards to the four mayoral candidates. She explained the rules which are simple, each candidate gets a chance to make an opening statement to talk about themselves rather than the other candidates. It also gives them a chance to address issues they believe should concern the community and not them personally. Among those mayoral candidates is the current mayor of two years Joe Vinatieri, Raquel Mcleod, Ronaldo Cano, and L. Leon Savage. Following the opening statements, questions from the audience are asked as each candidate has 60 seconds to give their reply. As current directly elected mayor, Joe Vinatieri has made comments regarding his council team’s commitments to the city which covered uptown, homelessness, public safety, preserving the library, extending a larger parking structure, and investments in the police department with a budget increase of 2.5 million dollars. This he claims, will aid in adding more officers, canines, and radios. Vinatieri also hopes to expand the neighborhood watch and continue the fight to stop the AB109-early release of prison
inmates. Vinatieri also made a statement referring to the use of prop-H dollars to reduce the homeless population. Vinatieri stated, “But we much more work to do, we got jobs, traffic, new business, commuting enhancements, 5G for Whittier, a people-mover transport system,” Vinatieri said, “It’s been a short two years and I hope I can count on your support to lead our city for the next two years and I ask for your vote on April 10th .” Mayoral candidate, Rolando Cano, has been an active member in school districts, with the homeless, and amongst advocates for the overall safety of children. Cano believes the community’s main concerns have shifted stating, “And it seems our interest has shifted from education, to our elders, to our overall parks and libraries, and has shifted to crime and homelessness.” Heavily involved in the community, Cano expresses how he spends a lot of time in uptown Whittier from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. and communicating with the homeless speaks about the deviation from the community’s original intention. He also states how Whittier used to be a small community and said, “I remember our community being a close-knit community,” Cano said, “A community where everyone knew their name if you walked into a shop and everyone knew who you were.” Mayoral candidate, Raquel McLeod has been living in Whittier since 1999 and attended Whittier College. Mcleod mentioned, “I do think there’s a time for progress, I think we’re sitting in it,” Mcleod said, “And I think our families, like
mine our young families here are wanting something to improve.” She is a veteran in the U.S. Army, and believes what improvements the fam-
ilies in the community really want to see are public safety being number one, and gang population being the second. Mcleod also makes a statement regarding economic development which she claims needs to aim at helping the community; this includes local shops and family owned businesses. She voiced how, as the mayor of Whittier, she will always available to listen to those who want to be heard from the most. The last mayoral candidate, L. Leon Savage, came to Whittier in 1993. He was a bookstore owner from south central Los Angeles and served in the military. Savage stated, “I’ve seen and been with the ups and downs of this town, however I see things that really need to be paid attention to,” Savage said, “I see a community that’s either uninformed of what needs to be going on and what needs to happen.” Savage also believes that the Whittier police department is in high demand and
that there is not enough “man-power” for the town’s 88,000 population when compared to the WPD’s 110 police officials. Savage also made comments toward police departments’ budget increase of 2.5 million, claiming that it is not enough and that more is needed. The Weather in the Arctic Wounds Up Being Hotter Than in Europe JAIME APARICIO Reporter

As being seen by climatologist Dr. Judah Cohen and the rest of the scientific community, they have recorded that the temperatures of the arctic North Pole were warmer than that of Europe. Within the current running season, subfreezing temperatures have been running across the European country; ranging from Poland to Spain. Citizens of Rome were witnesses to snow falling in the area for the first time in six years. On another part of the Europe, Friday also saw Britain and Ireland being hit by a storm that brought snow and high winds of freezing temperatures. In general, the Arctic is above the freezing mark in the middle of the winter season. Dr. Cohen, author of a 2017 study that linked a warming Arctic to intermittentintermittend blasts of cold temperatures, had this to say about the anomaly weather in the region known as the polar vortex: “It’s locking in that cold air at the high latitudes in the Arctic region.” Dr. Cohen is referring to mother nature sometimes having bursts of freezing air escaping from a weakening polar vortex that acts in the same manner asof a dam does. With the planet going through anomalies such as warmer seasons, the warmer temperatures weakens the vortex and allows the air to escape to close by countries, therefore causing those same countries to witness colder weather than usual. And Wwith the growing research suggesting the cause of these anomalies as being from global warming, it can only be foreseen that the polar vortex will continue to weaken.

Self-driving cars, phones with facial-recognition, now mind-reading tech? Using some new artificial intelligence technology, a team at the University of Toronto-Scarborough (UT) were able to recreate images shown to people with surprising accuracy. They used electroencephalogram (EEG) sensors and a special algorithm to record brain activity and translate the images. “When we see something, our brain creates a mental percept, which is essentially a mental impression of that thing. We were able to capture this percept using EEG to get a direct illustration of what’s happening in the brain during this process,” Dan Nemrodov, researcher at
the UT lab and founder of the new tech said in a statement released by the university. Thirteen adults between 18 and 27 years of age were shown pictures of 140 different faces one-at-a-time on a computer screen. The EEG sensors were able to retrieve the brains’ activity and relay the images of the faces on a seperate computer screen using the special algorithm. The algorithm used by the UT team searches for signals in the brain that related to the mental images the test subjects were being shown. The recreated faces were very accurate, looking just a bit blurry compared to the original images shown. Partly why this came as a surprise was because previous researchers shied away from using EEG for this kind of study. Rather than using EEG, researchers tried to use tests
that detected changes in blood flow. EEG tests detect brain activity but were frowned upon because they produce a lot of useless data. Not only is the EEG method cheaper than the fMRI tests used in the past, it is also more easily accessible. The man who created the new tech, Nemrodov praised EEG for how much quicker it retrieves data than fMRI tests. “fMRI captures activity at the time scale of seconds,” Nemrodov said, “but EEG captures activity at the millisecond scale. So we can see with very fine detail how the percept of a face develops in our brain using EEG.” While the tech has still ways to go before it can be applied to help real-world problems, Nemrodov and the team at UT know a few ways it can be useful. One interesting idea they have for the tech has
it being used to help catch criminals. “It could... have forensic uses for law enforcement in gathering eyewitness information on potential suspects rather than relying on verbal descriptions provided to a sketch artist,” Adrian Nestor, professor at the University of Toronto-Scarborough said. Much like Nemrodov, Nestor was astonished by what they accomplished. Any researcher would be if they were able to recreate images in the way the UT team did. “The fact we can reconstruct what someone experiences visually based on their brain activity opens up a lot of possibilities,” Nestor said. “It unveils the subjective content of our mind and it provides a way to access, explore and share the content of our perception, memory and imagination.”

Video Game Companies Surprised By Trump’s Summit on Violent Video Games

After the wake of the Florida shooting that took place many government officials, are doing what they can now to reduce the chances of a mass shooting. And are doing whatever it takes, President Trump has even declared a summit to meet with the major video game companies. Trump said at a White House meeting “We have to look at the internet, because a lot of bad things are happening to young kids and young minds, and their minds are being formed, and we have to do something about maybe what they’re seeing and how they’re seeing it. And also video games.” At an official briefing press Huckabee Sanders stated that Trump plans to meet with the major video game

companies, “to see what they can do on that front”. This was a major surprise by all video game companies, they had no knowledge of this. The Verge had reached out to confirm the knowledge of them being unaware of this and they all said the same thing. The Entertainment Software Association that represents major video
companies such as Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Capcom, Square Enix, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros. And they had denied meeting and actually pushed against the idea of it. “ESA and our member companies have not received an invitation to meet with President Trump,” the group
said in a statement. “The same video games played in the US are played worldwide; however, the level of gun violence is exponentially higher in the US than in other countries. Numerous authorities have examined the scientific record and found there is no link between media content and real-life violence.” It’s still very unclear what the White House even plans to talk about. But even if they did want to censure the industry in any way, legally it falls in the favor of the video game industry as free speech. Even if that’s the case it seems like bad timing all around to have this kind of discussion. There is real reason to make less violent games because there is no real link that video games make a person more aggressive. And it’ll be essentially shooting yourself in there foot.

For many years, there was the standing hypothesis on the reason why human beings have different colored skin. The idea was that the correlation between human skin pigmentation and location of said peoples on the earth’s equator lead to the variations of skin colors seen today. An Article written in 2002’s Scientific American called “Skin Deep” , by Nina G Jablonski and George Chaplin, layout the groundwork for a more recent theory of skin color variation concluding that ; the coloration of human skin is a direct result of natural selection, where the gradual development of melanin and vitamin D in our hairless ancestors helped to temper and transform the body’s biological response to the sun’s UV radiation. Misconceptions such as the aforementioned ‘equator affecting skin theory’, are important to test and improve upon, especially since the evidence found by Jablonski and Chaplin are sound. The
current theory started forming when Jablonski found an article that documented the low levels of vitamin B in the blood of light skinned people. The article would throw them into a decade long research into the relations between UVB radiation on the production of vitamin D in human reproduction. Vitamin D is important in human reproduction because of the regulatory role it plays in reproductive physiology. The Vitamin D receptors(VDR-interacting protein) works with other proteins to help with the transcription of bodily functions and organs that are essential to the human condition, including but not limited too : reproductive steroid hormones, tissues, bones, Intestine and pancreatic cells. Because these processes are essential, those who could best produce them were the ones who were producing more, causing the type of skin to be more common than those whose skin was less adaptive. This theory was also supported by the satellite mapping of the UV radiation on the earth and its effect
on the people in that certain area. After dividing the radiation effects into three zones, Nina G Jablonski and George Chaplin article explained that, based on their results of said mapping, “indigenous peoples in the tropics generally have dark skin, whereas people in the subtropics and temperate regions are lighter-skinned...” Their widespread, yet comprehensive examination of this effect was a key supporting detail of their Hypothesis, that was strengthened and developed more when they looked into the contrasting details of dark colored people in certain areas, and the cultural development of certain groups of peoples in different areas. While the biological data helped support their theory, the authors looked at the anthropological history of human ancestors to strengthen their argument. Firstly, they found that certain groups of peoples differ from this theory mainly because of their Gender needs i more so their body allows more in. Not only that, but certain ethnic groups of peoples, as stated by Jablonski and Chap-
lin, such as the Inuit are able to keep their colorations due to the the vitamin D enriched foods that they regularly consume. The Migration patterns of certain groups, as observed in Africa, move to different areas because of cultural reasons, giving them a majority difference when compared to other groups. Many peoples in the world are in UV heavy areas, but due to cultural( religious) reasons they were certain clothing that’s helped protect them and keep their colorations. A concerning trend in those with lighter skin have been found, as the cultural/economic reasons for certain migrations have little to no time to wait for their biological process to alter and adapt. In places such as australia, many light skinned people are at risk of premature aging of the skin and skin cancers.(Jablonski, Chaplin) since the release of this article, the development of this hypothesis has grown, with more and more research being done to test, support and go against this theory.

Russian Spies Hacked Winter Olympics As Payback JAIME APARICIO Reporter

Under a “false-flag” operation, Russian spies were found to be responsible for hacking the games of last year’s Winter Olympics. The cyber-attack, to which the games were held in South Korea, was first believed to be conducted by North Korea in an attempt to be framed by the Russian group. Russian spies wound up hacking hundreds of computers that were used by local authorities in the South Korean region. Though the attacks were closely monitored while the games continued, PyeongChang officials admit that a cyber-attack was first done during the February ninth opening ceremonies. Due to the complications from the hacking of the system, disruptions were placed on the Internet, broadcasting networks, and even on the Olympic’s official website. The reason behind the hacking of the system was because of the olympic committee banning a Russian team member competing in the curling sport. “On the one hand it is extremely disappointing when prohibited substances might have been used, but on the other hand it shows the effectiveness of the anti‑doping system at the games which protects the rights of all the clean athletes,” expressed the committee. Because of the harmful nature the ban held for the entire team of Russia, athletes from the country were still allowed to compete in the games but under the description “Olympic Athletes from Russia.” If by some chance Russian athletes did indeed win gold in any of the sport categories, the celebration of the victory and handing out of the medals would not be accompanied by the country’s anthem. Russian athletes were also not allowed to wear their country’s flag on any uniform worn during the Olympics because of the doping done by the curling athlete.

In this spectacular event hosted by Fathom Events the beloved film classic, Labyrinth (1986), will be returning to the big screen nationwide for three days. Join Sarah and friends once again in her quest through the labyrinth to save her baby brother from Jareth, the Goblin King. The film will be shown on April 29, May 1 and 2 in select theatres. There will also be a special introduction by Brian Henson, son of the late Jim Henson, and Jennifer Connelly followed by a short expert of Henson’s fantasy series, The Storyteller. Labyrinth was first released in theatres in 1986. The film stars Jennifer Connelly as Sarah and the late rock musician David Bowie as Jareth. Although not a box office success (the film flopped with a grossing of 12.9 mil from the 25 mil budget), Labyrinth has received quite a cult following and is considered a classic film to watch. Feb. 28 Disney decided to surprise us all with a trailer sequel that we all wanted, that being Wreck it Ralph Two. The first one was truly one of a kind movie that was relatable to people of all ages making a perfect film for just about everyone. It seems like this one isn’t going to fall short of that either. The last time we saw our favorite bad guy on the big screen was way back in 2012. So it’s been sometime since, but it does seem like the movie is going to stay true to its roots and maintain that same cute factor that we all love and adore from Ralph. The trailer starts off with the owner of the arcade setting up wifi at the shop, but on the other end it has Ralph and his friend Vanellope just going about minding their business in the virtual world. When Ralph’s curiosity gets the best of him but investigating the Wifi he gets sucked into the internet. It’s much like a man out of time story with him now and it looks adorable. Ralph has no idea what the internet is while on the other hand Vanellope has a clear idea of
what it is. And what to avoid such as spam mail and click bait news headlines, meanwhile Ralph falls for almost everyone of them. Much isn’t revealed about the main plot but the general thought it looks like they’re just trying to find their way back home from the internet. But as previously stated it shows how Ralph an arcade game reacts the 21th century buy interacting with apps and other websites. It’s go-

America’s favorite weird actor Andy Dick is currently in the limelight with some, less than comforting news. It turns out he has a fetish where he finds a thrill out of licking people, and it’s become so much of a problem that he was let go of two films! It was reported that he was groping people on set and as I previously stated licking his colleagues. And in a new interview with a german magazine outlet he did what he does best lick the photographer in the face. Editors at the German magazine planned to break the story in a package that was scheduled for the 24th of february. A senior U.S. correspondent Philipp Oehmke set out with a 5,000 word, that was meant to shine more of a light on the Me Too movement. They reached out to 80+ men who had been accussed of sexaul misconduct, most declined but Andy Dick agreed to be interviewed. Dick was fired for sexual
misconduct from two movies. People on set of both films made claims like. The reporter claimed that “He gave my assistant his cellphone number and agreed to meet as if we were talking about something nice”. The initial interview was first canceled, so Dick had rescheduled to do it at a restaurant Lucques, but he couldn’t make it to that either so rescheduled again but this time it take place at his home. Dick greeted them with open arms offering with his relatives and loved ones at his home. Oehmke managed to get Dick to sit down for two hours for an interview/ photo shoot. He claims that “He was super-friendly but very anxious”. He reportedly had mood swings throughout the whole ordeal making it very complicated. When asked about his allegations he made his message very clear by giving the camera the middle finger. As the interview started to wind down, Dick politely walked them to the door saying his goodbyes. Then in the midst of all that he gave the photographer a hug and did his favorite thing lick his face.

The 90th Academy Awards took place Sunday, March 4 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “The Shape of Water” was the stand-out film, but empowering speeches and musical performances capped the exciting night. This year’s Academy Awards was a bit different from those in the past. There were more performances than usual with Miguel, Common and Mary J. Blige all hitting the stage, among others. Another difference this year’s grand movie show had was a prize for the winner with the shortest acceptance speech. Late-night television personality and this year’s
Oscar host, Jimmy Kimmel offered a jet-ski to whoever gave the shortest speech. At the end of the night, it ended up going to Mark Bridges, who won best costume design for his work in the film “Phantom Thread.” The night was ultimately about the actors, artists, composers, directors and designers who put together amazing films over the last year, though. Jordan Peele, who was best known for his comedy skits not too long ago, made history with his thriller “Get Out.” Peele became the first African-American to win an Oscar for best original screenplay. In his acceptance speech, Peele admitted that he didn’t think anybody would want
to help him make the film, but said he was thankful he received it. After his speech, Peele tweeted, “I just won an Oscar. WTF!?!” NBA and Los Angeles Lakers’ legend, Kobe Bryant won an Oscar for best animated short film. He wrote and narrated the winner, “Dear Basketball,” while Glen Keane directed Bryant’s ode to basketball. Best actress in a leading role went to Frances McDormand for her role in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” McDormand used her acceptance speech to praise all the women nominated. “Look around, ladies and gentlemen,” McDormand told the crowd after asking every female nominee in every
category to stand up, “We all have stories to tell and projects we need financed. Invite us into your office in a couple days — or you can come to ours, whichever suits you best — and we’ll tell you all about them.” The big winner on the night, though, was “The Shape of Water,” recipient of the best picture Oscar. The human-creature romance film won a four of the 13 Oscar’s it was nominated for. Its four awards and 13 nominations were both the most of all movies. Guillermo Del Toro won best director for putting together the film. “The Shape of Water” also brought home Oscar’s for production design and music score.

What Atomic Blonde gave audiences was a slow, but engaging spy thriller that, when all is said and done, is a memorable Spy Movie. While Red Sparrow shares similar details too Atomic Blonde such as: stunning/ massive stage presence from the protagonist, fun and interesting choreography and Fun settings with a great score, it lacks in style and character. Since Jennifer Lawrence is the most fascinating part of this
film, let’s take a hot moment to talk about her. While Jennifer Lawrence’s character Dominika Egorova, has all of the details that make her a likeable character, but she doesn’t go much further than that. While Lawrence’s own charm helps to make the character interesting; the normal good person tropes that are usually assigned to a hero don’t help at all, and it falls flat. While the rest of the cast does a decent job, it all comes off as very average with a hint of being interesting due to the settings and character quirks. What is most distracting
however, is the few moments of surprises made for the sake of shock and awe-rather than actual organically written sensible surprises. All of the times that the film becomes interesting, is entirely due to Lawrence in the role. She pulls of the action sequences very well and there are scenes where she seems like she putting way more effort than usual and it comes across great. Another intriguing detail of the film is the almost overbearing amount of violence and sex that happen in the film. Relative to the the rest of the film, it’s honestly not a lot of
it’s more memorable than a lot of the other scenes. There are quite a few nude scenes, spy torture scenes, a couple rape scenes, sex scenes and gunshots, in which some are called for and help the film’s narrative, and some seem to be there to help fulfill the R rating requirement. Just backtracking on the spy film that Red Sparrow is going to be Compared to, Atomic Blonde leading lady is very proactive, and is totally owning her sexuality. Lawrence’s character is very reactive and is very much just letting things happen, where even when it seems like
she has some semblance of control it’s all orchestrated by some other force or reason. The film is a fine way to the pass the time, and is a perfectly ok action flick. Women and POC characters in media have had a bit of time to be seen as groundbreaking, but what really normalizes non traditional heroes into society is a film like this; one where a woman is just a stereotypical mary sue character and everyone accepts it as normal. I can call that progress.

Studying Amongst a Younger Generation JAIME APARICIO

My biggest regret to date is not studying for my potential career right after high school graduation. Granted I did study for a couple of different possible careers, but at the end of it all, I found my passion with writing in a journalistic style. My name is Jaime Aparicio and I’m 31 years old studying to be a journalist amongst many students who are a good several years younger than I am. Though this may seem a bit daunting at times, I do not let this taint my thinking process when writing material for the Rio Hondo school newspaper.
Taking it a bit back to when I began my first years in college, I graduated high school in 2004 and the imagination I had back then caused me to want to pursue a career as an animator. I was talented in somewhat duplicating a drawing onto paper from an existing drawing, but I could not for the life of me draw freehand and decided to try and be a marine biologist. The biology aspect of my studies only lasted for a few years before I took a regrettable break for several years. Seven years to be exact, and it was all to work for retail that brought not only a management position but also a great deal of frustration. After realizing that I needed to desperately leave
my employer at the time and go back to college, I made the wise decision to pursue a career in journalism. Coming back to college at the age of 26, I found myself not only surrounded by mostly younger students but had the mentality of someone who has worked for a long time. The reason for my slow return to school was due to myself wanting to earn money instead of expanding my education and putting it to good use for a more successful future. The job I had in the retail business before Rio Hondo was not one that was difficult to obtain. No offense to those who have made a living out of their position in that type of workplace, but even
a few employees from that same employer gave me the advice of moving on to better things in life while I was still youthful. And wisely enough, I heeded their advice. With being in classrooms that are occupied by younger students, I sometimes find myself questioning their mindset and type of language that is used, which I think is understandable because of the age difference. ` The relevance of the pop culture that I grew up with may seep into today’s culture in general, but for the most part, does not have the same impact. Even though I tend to be the oldest, or one of the oldest students in my classes, I still find myself having interesting conversations based
off of pop culture that give me an idea of what material to talk about when writing or talking about in the field of journalism.

Stop Comparing Your Life to Others JOSE AHUMADA

. We compare our lives to other people based on their success or where they’re at in life. Sometimes even compare ourselves to people thinking we’re better than them. This is a not a good mindset to have in life. Not comparing yourself to others is easier said than done, though. You might scroll through your social media and see your friend with a high paying career. Or that person you went to high school with who just bought a new car. Maybe
your best friend got engaged and you have to be happy for them. Even then, there’s always someone with more success and the comparisons never stop. This sets up an unrealistic expectation on what to do in order to “make it” in life. Focusing on other people’s lives takes a lot of energy from helping you focus on yourself. Other people’s “happiness” or “successful” lives should not be the ultimate standard for your success. Like Theodore Roosevelt said, “comparison is the thief of joy.” Making comparisons
to other people is not fair and deprives us of our joy. We are all unique and have our own hidden talents. Paying too much attention to how other people are successful prevents you from looking at your own success. At worse, it lowers your self esteem because you allow others to dictate how you feel about yourself. Comparisons are also not good because they will always leave you unmotivated and not wanting to move forward. Besides not comparing your life to others, you have to remember you do not always know what goes on every day in a person’s life.
A good example of this can be seeing someone post on social media about how many cars they have, how happy they look in their relationship, or how successful they claim to be. Respectively, this person might be struggling with car payments, is unhappy in their relationship, or is really in debt. This is not always the case with everyone, but you do not truly know a person’s life. Some things you can do to stop comparing yourself to others is to focus on your own strengths, be grateful for the things you have, and just enjoy the journey in life.
Everyone has their own path and journey in life. Do not be discouraged just because it looks like other people have everything “together.” Everything gets better and eventually you will get to where you want to be in time. At the end of it, you really do not want to live someone else’s life. You want to live your own life and stop comparing yourself with other people. That is one of the main things to living a happier life. It will also help you stay focused on your own goals. Sand find contentment in life. .

If I were to be the grandest architect of a scheme in which I Madoff with the spoils of war, I wouldn’t tell a soul. As if things were about to play out on stage, the curtains would remain closed so as to heighten the anticipation for all of those in attendance. As director of the newest newsworthy spectacle to be beheld, I’d make it so that there’s absolutely no need to hastily unveil what the audience already believes to be inevitable: more conflict and bloodshed. Much to the distaste of all those who hastily vouch for change and democratic freedom, the price paid for such things is blood. It’s a weary process I tell you. Assembling riots, and staging coups is really painstaking work.And that brings me to my two ideas about why there isn’t much coverage of the Syrian civil war. The first being, that perhaps, things are about to take a turn for the worse and our hard-headed journalist are afraid to cover the reality. I’m no genius telling you that the site of any bubbling newsworthy story is its loudest prior to the actual event taking place. Celebrities walk into the bright embrace of the paparazzi and not vice versa. If the war in Syria were to escalate, it would have the capacity to unravel the very existence of the world in moments. And so, you’d think that if anything, us as journalists would rush to this site with excitement prepared to galvanize the public to action.

If all cameras directed attention to the reality in war-torn Syria, people would parade and clamor for intervention undoubtedly. Because really, who likes to see families shredded to bits and children gassed? If I’ve known journalists to be anything, it’s certainly not afraid, but outspoken. The media’s silence speaks volumes. When even the most outspoken of all our agents are not willing to be heard, you should really begin to wonder whether something is amiss. Unfortunately, in similar vein, it also happens to be that in the moments prior to breaking news being cast, that the site of some events are at their most quiet. Especially in circumstances where things escalated quickly. Where all the witnesses heard was a scream, and saw flashes of light then a man be snapped to pieces. And this brings me to the second scenario on why there isn’t much coverage of the Syrian Civil War. Nobody can truly say that events in Syria have not been dialed down and removed from the public so as to not inspire fear and terror. In my assessment, these times, are the dwindling moments of hasty diplomacy before the powder keg explodes. Control of the public morale is what I allege, as forces unbeknownst to us all are seeking to capitalize on our failure to understand this very moment. I mean is that farfetched? You do the math. What does it truly take to accomplish such a task? Nothing if not a couple blind eyes, disguise, and

truths born of repeated lies. Nothing if not few agents and provocateur willing to employ saboteur in discreet affairs as intricately spun as the web of lies by the most deadly widow. Leaders these days will tell you that staying “woke” is the answer and come to you by the guise of benevolence promising answers and resolutions to conflict.They’ll say that it’s time to put Assad aside and promise freedom. They’ll act as if it weren’t the case that all man’s kind has ever created, is good fellas and factions with the audacity to get rich and die having tried, even if it’s at the expense of lives. And the unamused public? We bat blind eyes like nocturnal mammals in daytime skies. For weeks straight, like months, with no end in sight to a conflict that’s displaced millions. Let’s not act like major

Ryan Seacrest has been showing the world how to live the American dream for over 20 years, starting as a Disc Jockey, he worked his way up the ranks of several networks including ABC, FOX and NBC Comcast. Variety reported that from 2007 to 2013, Suzy Hardy, who worked as a stylist to Seacrest was sexually harassed by the Host. Hardy accuses the star of putting his erect penis on her and slapping her buttocks so hard, leaving a mark that lasted several hours. He would move her head toward his crotch when she would tie his shoes according to a former employee who worked with the two, who went on NBC’s “The Today
Show” on February 28th to give his side of the Story. The power that Ryan Seacrest has in Hollywood and around the globe is quite apparent. Already, several publicists have confirmed that they will steer their clients away from E! completely, or towards Giuliana rancic, another disgraced E figure we still can’t get rid of. What she did to keep her job on the network we may never know, she was dismissed from her anchor position at the network after saying that Artist Zendaya “looked like she smelled of Patchouli oil.” A remark deemed racist as it joined stigmas of people of color and marijuana usage. E! Viewers are predominantly Hispanics and African Americans, when Rancic stepped out of line, they were the first ones to check her faster than she could tell the
press she was under stress from her eighth abortion. Perhaps we, as the audience find it more difficult to deal with white Italian American Rancic hating on black African American Zendaya, but are we willing to turn the other cheek when it comes to Seacrest and Hardy’s white on white crime? E!, allegedly cannot dismiss Seacrest from his Oscar gig this last Sunday without violating contract. Also, when working in the presence of the elite who create billions of dollars around the world, one must go through rigorous background checks similar to that of recent headlines like Jared Kushner. E! Also states that a thorough investigation was done. Tinseltown’s top Directors, producers, agents, managers, and publicists will be out in full force, while highly

nearly half a billion dollars, Seacrest is ready to fight for his name and his company who is credited with getting the Kardashians to where they are today, hosting “American Idol,” “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” and he recently boasted about his 14 year run on 102.7 KIIS FM on Instagram, where he wakes up extra early in New York to broadcast live in Los Angeles and is syndicated nationwide. Seacrest is now a globally recognized name who’s rolodex helped shine light on up and coming stars. Sorry Hardy, the only #timesup here is that of the California Statute of Limitations which will protect Seacrest from any criminal violations. If us men and women are dealing with 7 years or 7 seconds of harassment in 2018, it’s time for us to take a look in the mirror and reevaluate.

We, as human beings need food to live, and I personally love food. And the truth is that we all need food to live, and for powering our bodies to get us through the day. Eating food is definitely a comforting thing, but whom do we really have to thank for its production? Famers? Yes, but we always tend to forget the real key players in production of our daily produce, the bees. They help pollinate crops so that we as human beings can have fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Bees are kind of a big deal when it comes to their jobs, because they help pollinate and grow seventy-out of a hundred human food crops. This alone supplies about 90 percent of the world’s nutritional foods that are in high demand by the human population. So what is the leading cause of bee death? It’s very simple actually. What farmers might or
might not know is that the pesticides they use to help “protect” their crops is what is actually killing off our good friends, the bees. Author, writer, and director Jon Cooksey of “How to Boil a Frog” stated, “In the last four years, the chemical industry has spent $11.2 million on a PR initiative
to say it’s not their fault, so we know whose fault it is.” Droughts, habitat destruction, nutrition deficit, air pollution, and even global warming have a lot to do with the shortage in lifespan of bees. So how is this all happening? Well for one thing, bees have no control of what’s going on with the world around them, and it goes back to us as humans. Humans are responsible
Businesses Create Their Own Gun Control

After the Florida High School shooting two weeks ago, the gun debate has gained steam yet again on what we should do next. While citizens urge their congress to act before another tragic attack happens, powerful entities are taking matters into their own hands. Since the mass shooting that killed 17 individuals, multiple companies have taken sides on the issue about what should be done. Dick’s Sporting goods (including it’s affiliate Field & Stream), Walmart, Delta Airlines, and others have either dissociated themselves from the NRA or have stated their positions on gun control with action. Dicks sporting goods announced last week they will also stop selling high-capacity magazines, and raise the age limit to 21 to purchase a gun. Walmart also took a similar stance by also raising the age limit, and pledged to no longer sell items that resemble assault style weapons such as toys and airsoft guns. Delta Airlines announced that they’re removing discounts for all NRA members. I believe it’s great to have these companies use their power to shift policy on gun control, but the reasons are
for more than, “it’s the morally right thing to do.” After the massacre of Sandy Hook, Dicks Sporting Goods announced they’d no longer sell assault weapons in any of their stores, yet they continued to sell America’s favorite assault rifle in their affiliated Field & Stream stores. It’s less of an ethical decision and more of a tactic to ensure the survival of their company by being on the right side of history. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. These rich companies have the ability to make a political statement like no rally, protest, or individual can because they have the power to do so. This goes without saying that these companies are risking their business’s reputation. Since discontinuing discounts to NRA members, Delta Airlines has been punished by Georgia’s GOP government by no longer being granted a tax exempt worth $38 million dollars on purchasing jet fuel. The actions these Companies have taken are symbolic in showing that there is a problem with our gun control policies. With all the power corporations carry these days, they’ve realized they can’t stand idly by and not do anything.

very well solve one of the two major problems. The next thing would be to solve the crisis of habitat loss. So what are some solutions we can strive for to save our friends the bees? Well, for starters, we could ban the seven most dangerous pesticides; which include, nico-
tine-based clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiametoxam, the nicotinoid pesticides— clorpyriphos, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, and fipronil. These are all used in soils, on foliage, and found in seeds. At times they are mixed to create deadly hive cocktails that help aid in destroying beehives and colonies. Protecting and preserving wild habitat could very much aid in our helpful pollinator’s lifespan and bringing back the ways of ecological agriculture. Ecological farming will help sustain human food production, preserve wildlife habitats, and most importantly, protect the bees. Organic farming is the most efficient means of producing an outcome that could help us all to live in a healthy world. For more information on different ways one can become involved with the movement to help save the bees, sites like greenpeace. org or even sos-bees.org do a very good job of aiding this great and notable cause.

The newest boyband everyone is talking about is Brockhampton. The boyband consists of eight members: Kevin Abstract, Matt Champion, Ameer Vann, Merlyn Wood, Rodney Taylor, Dom McLennon, Russell Boring, and Ciaran “bearface” McDonald. They are redefining what it means to be a boyband. The Texas raised founder, Abstract, connected with the members online through a notable Kanye West fan forum. “In the two years since its conception, they have released the ambitiously multigenre All-American Trash mixtape, followed by their captivatingly honest, riledup-rap and warm-chorusfilled debut album “Saturation”. The band is an inspiration as they aspire to create their own record label, and produce other content under the same brand. What makes this band stand out amongst the rest is that they are a close knit group of friends. They see each other as family and encourage each member to be creative. Not to mention their amazing music. I love all their albums and would highly recommend
their music. They are the voice of the newer generation, breaking down stereotypes and gender norms as well as including societal critique. Brockhampton is a breath of fresh air with all these new Hip hop artists on the rise who baffle me at the amount of success they achieve with music and lyrics that lack originality and depth. Each artist speaks about the trials and tribulations they have faced so far in life and they also mock the critics who constantly complain about how the young men frequently touch upon the subject of being gay. In one of their tracks from Saturation II, JUNKY Abstract raps in the first verse, ““Why you always rap about being’ gay?” ‘Cause not enough n****s rap and be gay.” The entire band is highly efficient in talking about uncomfortable subjects. With this line, Abstract speaks for those who do not feel they can do so. They also feel representation is important. They note how in pop, there are gay and bi icons, but the same cannot be said for Hip hop. I will be anticipating to see what else Brockhampton has in store for their fans and the critics. As for now, check out their latest album available everywhere, “Saturation III.”

Beach Volleyball The Lady Roadrunners went 1-1 Friday, defeating Glendale by sweep before losing 4-1 to Orange Coast College. Sara Harding and Michelle Rosas managed to win both matchups while the pairs of Andrea Velasco/Madison Mader, Felipa Moreno/ Michell Chavez, Mia Ponce/ Monica Campos, and Madelyn Gastelum/Denyse Perez all managed against the Vaqueros. In result, the ladies keep their record of .500 as they head to Doheny State Beach on Wednesday to face Saddleback College before travelling to Granada Beach on Friday for a double-header against Long Beach City and Bakersfield College. Softball After finishing February 1-9, the women’s softball team continued a tough run of form entering March as El Camino College defeated the Lady Roadrunners 9-1 in six innings on Thursday. Overall the Lady Roadrunners are 3-13-1 and 0-2 in conference with away matchups against South Coast Conference foes East Los Angeles

In nonconference play, the softball squad also travel to LA Harbor on Thursday (3 p.m.) while a trip to Orange Coast College on Saturday yields a double-header against the Pirates (2 p.m.) and San Bernardino Valley (11 a.m.). Women’s Tennis The women’s tennis team managed to improve its record to 4-2 this week after defeating San Diego City College 6-3 on Tuesday. Up next for the Lady Roadrunners is a conference matchup against El Camino College today at the Rio tennis courts with a 2 p.m. tip-off. Baseball Dirty Bird baseball had a 1-1 week after beating Victor Valley College 8-7 last Tuesday and losing at Compton College 6-4 on Thursday. Saturday the Roadrunners home matchup against Compton was rescheduled for a later day yet to be determined due to heavy rain dampening the field. The Dirty Birds travel to Cerritos Tuesday(2 p.m.) before hosting them Thursday (2 p.m.). They also host El Camino on Saturday at noon.
