The World Series is set to begin tonight in Los Angeles. The Dodgers, who had the best record in the league in the regular season and postseason, will be hosting the Houston Astros at Dodger Stadium. For the Dodgers, this World Series is about ending the 29-year drought they’ve been in since winning their last in 1988. The Astros, on the other hand, have never even won a World Series game. They will, however, be playing with fire and passion for the city of Houston that was recently hit by Hurricane Harvey. Dallas Keuchel will be on the mound for Houston in game one. For Los Angeles, it’ll be superstar pitcher Clayton Kershaw getting the start. Keuchel has a 2-1 record so far this postseason. In his 17.1 innings pitched, Keuchel has struck out 25 batters and

has a 2.60 ERA for the Astros. Kershaw has also pitched 17.1 innings this postseason, but his ERA is slightly higher than Keuchel’s. The Dodgers’ ace has a 3.63 ERA, only striking out 16 batters in his three postseason appearances. It has not been the best postseason for Kershaw, individually at least. Even with his 2-0 record in this year’s playoffs, Kershaw is capable of playing much better than he has, and that might be bad news for the Astros. The Dodgers have only lost a single game this entire postseason. They come in hot after defeating the Cubs in only five games. Houston had a tougher time earning their spot in the World Series. They trailed the Yankees 3-2 in the ALCS, but the Astros were able to win game six and seven on their home field. Houston will have to play better than they have the entire season when they face the explosive Dodger bats.
Los Angeles has three batters hitting over .400 this postseason. Charlie Culberson (.455), Enrique Hernandez (.417) and Yasiel Puig (.414) have combined for four home runs and 14 RBIs. Dodgers’ third baseman Justin Turner has been the most important piece of the lineup, though. With a solid .387 batting average, Turner has homered three times while tallying 12 RBIs. Turner even recorded his first ever walk-off home run in the NLCS versus the Cubs. While the Dodgers have a platoon of batters that can go off any minute, the Astros will have to rely on their superstars. All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve and All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa will be leading the way for the Astros. Altuve has hit five home runs and drove in eight RBIs for Houston. Sex is an everyday taboo even in 2017 America, just the word alone brings up human imaginations of cover girls and muscles, what happens when these everyday situations are given boundaries that are crossed, what as a people can we do to move forward from this every day accusations and prevent them from happening with the recent media reports including men of power tampering with evidence and paying off women to hush silently. Harvey Weinstein was another Hollywood mogul producer whose icon status was diminished even after having worked with topheavy weights talent who have since abandoned the now troubled Miramac founder. You don’t have to look far for a story pertaining to the latest victim of a sex crime all over America and throughout the world crossing someone’s sexual boundaries against their will is becoming an all too common altercation. Amongst the Rio Hondo Campus, their eyes shot open as soon as I asked if they had ever been a victim of sexual assault some did not want to answer while others like 24-year-old Maria Delgado said she still has nightmares about her past without going into too much detail she says emotional scars and physical scars ended up being what gets the most of her even 4 years after the altercation. Leading psychiatrists say that the effects of sexual assault are none to be taken lightly with posttraumatic stress disorder, self blame and self-pity, social anxiety taking the lead on the ripple effects of such a thing happening to a human being. When it comes to 22-year-old Nathan Gomez, an openly homosexual male

who said he was raped after leaving the club when he was 18, he says he got over it in about a year. With strong family support he was able to get through it and no medication or psychiatric help was needed, something he says it is associated with the Stigma of being sexually assaulted. Which situation have the victims put themselves in and how do they carry themselves in their dress and mannerisms? Los Angeles sheriff deputies arrest man who was accused of molesting a young boy in the public restrooms of Pico Rivera, Smith Park, Sunday morning. 38 year-old Eduardo Ciarelli was detained by park security and several angry parents as the seven year old boy alerted adults that a man touched him inside the
restrooms. The majority of the parents who had been there, were there for a youths football game, along with several park staff members rushed over to find the man still in the restroom. Witness Alejandra Cruz heard the crazy sounds of what appeared to be a fight that broke loose between several men and Ciarelli. Ciarelli was brought out of the restroom with a torn shirt.
While security waited for the Los Angeles sheriffs to arrive, Ciarelli was claiming that he was simply just trying to help the little boy wash his hands. Lieutenant Ann Devane shares that deputies arrested Ciarelli on “suspicion of committing a lewd or lascivious act on a child.” As of now, records show that Ciarelli is being held at a 100,000 dollar bail with a pending court date.

October is known for Domestic Violence Awareness month, on October 17 Rio Hondo hosted an event to bring awareness to this major issue that many are not quite informed about. Student advocates that are part of The Violence Sentimental Program (VSP) on campus tied statements regarding this issue with purple string on every door on campus; for students to read in case they missed the event. For survivors of Domestic Violence who may have been wounded both physically and emotionally the color purple represents peace, courage, survival, honor and the dedication to ending violence. Statistics such as “2,340 deaths due to Domestic Abuse. 70% of deaths were female and 30% were male due to Domestic Abuse. 14% of all homicides that occurred were caused by intimate partner violence…” were placed on door knobs around campus by members of VSP. Oralia Alcorka, leader of The Violence Sentimental program, was able to bring out organizations that provide help for victims and to share information about their

Tesla Sends A Monster Solar Aid to Flare Could Hit Earth Puerto Rico Within 100 Years

American automaker, Tesla Inc. has began to send aid to the hurricane devastated American territory of Puerto Rico through solar generated battery packs. Hurricane Maria struck the entire island of Puerto Rico last month leaving an increasing death toll, majority of the Puerto Rico residents without drinking water, and 85% of the territory without power. Tesla produces solar generated battery packs called Powerwalls. “The Tesla Team has done this for many smaller islands around the world, but there is no scalability limit, so it can be done for Puerto Rico too.” tweeted Elon Musk, Tesla CEO. To which the governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello, responded, “Let’s talk. Do you want to show the world the power and scalability of your #TeslaTechnologies? PR [Puerto Rico] could be that flagship project.” The majority of Puerto Rico has been without power since the hurricane and could
remain without power for another six months. This leaves millions of Puerto Rican residents and major buildings like hospitals in the dark. The lack of power can lead to devastating effects for these patients. From the help of a car company, the battery pack can generate enough power to open more hospitals and take in more Puerto Ricans in need of medical aid. From the President of the United States who is also the President of Puerto Rico, Trump posted a chain of tweets October 12th stating, “Electric and all infrastructures was disaster before hurricanes. Congress to decide how much to spend... We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!” CEO of Tesla, Musk’s tweet hope to provide power to the American territory that is 85% without it. President Trump’s tweets criticize the condition of Puerto Rico before the hurricane and does not want to have the military and first responders there “forever”.

Avi Loeb, Harvard University professor claimed the worst of flares could even destroy the ozone layer, cause DNA mutations and disrupt ecosystems. Avi Loeb and Yale’s University Greg Laughlin believe to have found a solution as they stated that a huge loop of conductive wire between the Earth and the Sun would act as a magnetic shield and deflect flares’ particles away. The shield would consist of a 100,000 tons copper coil with a terawatt of energy, placed at a Lagrange point, which is practically parking spots in Space.The most extreme Solar Flares known as extreme superflares can be 10,000 times as powerful as normal Solar Flares, so powerful if it were to occur on earth it could potentially cause a mass extinction. A Solar Flare is when a sun ejects clouds of electrons, ions, and atoms, electromagnetic waves, into outer space causing a flash and an increase in the star’s brightness. They are seen as bright areas on the sun and
they can last from minutes to hours. An enormous Solar Flare could cause about ten trillion dollars of damage to power grids, satellites and communications. In 1859, a very powerful solar storm sent enormous flares towards Earth in the first recorded event of its kind. The Carrington flare crashed telegraph systems around the world, with some operators reporting they had been electrocuted. Avi Loeb stated, “Back then, there was not very much technology so the damage was not very significant, but if it happened in the modern world, the damage could be trillions of dollars.”. “ A flare like that today could shut down all the power grids, all the computers, all the cooling systems on a nuclear reactors. A lot of things could go bad.”. Avi Loeb and Manasvi Lingam have claimed that there’s a twelve percent chance an event similar to the 1859 Carrington Flare will happen in the next decade. People should start investing in more resources and energy into learning more about how superflares work.

The scientists at NASA have just made a rare discovery of two neutron stars colliding in outer space 130 million light years away. Back in August 17, an instrument referred to as LIGO, was used to observe the two stars colliding with each other, creating a marvelous sight to behold and record in the name of science. First used to discover and observe grav-
itational waves, the instrument LIGO won the Nobel Prize in 2015. “It’s a textbook-changer,” says science correspondent Miles O’Brien. What continues to add to this discovery is that the event of neutron stars colliding with one another only happens every 100,000 years or so. With this collision of neutron stars also comes the first ever sighting of a black hole emerging from the event. An interesting fact of neutron stars is that they are the remnants of what’s called

Researchers at a cancer institute located in the Netherlands have derived a new way to kill off cancer cells. By introducing an onagain, off-again treatment schedule, cancer cells can be eradicated before they can cause anymore harm or even death. The reason behind this new regiment of drug addiction is because of the mutation properties cancer can present by getting addicted to the very drugs that are meant to cure the body of
the sickness. By getting the cancer addicted to the drugs and then gradually removing the dependency of the drugs, the cancer cells then begin to die; therefore, removing the cancer from the host. Referred to as “drug holiday,” researchers first began testing this new method with mice. “Remarkably, intermittentintermitted dosing with vemurafenib prolonged the lives of mice with drug-resistant melanoma tumors,” explains co-lead researcherreseacher Martin McMahon. Further research in the matter showed that the cells that were addicted to the

Project leader Daniel Peeper goes on to add that “the idea is to discontinue treatment once tumor cells have become addicted, and then exploit the accumulation of DNA damage by applying a specific second treatment, which serves to worsen DNA damage to the extent that the tumor cell can no longer cope with it.” Recent advancements in the field of immunotherapy give hope to further install this one-two punch of a method and perhaps come closer to finding a cure for cancer once and for all.
Moscow, October 10, 2017. Russian Industrial manufacturer the Rostec Corporation unveiled the newest advancement to its Ratnik-3 combat suit much to the excitement of arms enthusiasts everywhere. This new variant of the Ratnik armor comes equipped with nuclear blast resistant technology that will warn a soldier of exposure to radiation via built-in watch and fallout gauge. A technological breakthrough when it comes to monitoring electromagnetic impulses on the battlefield. Dubbed the “Star Wars suit,” it’s clear to see why, as the suit of armor boasts a sleek all-black design that would make Darth Vader green in the face with envy. Rostec, a Russian state-sponsored corporation, is the sixth largest company in Russia created “to further the development, manufacturing and export of hightech industrial products.” Falling into line with the wet dreams of all defense secretaries and warmongering generals the wide world over, is this latest push by Rostec to create a highly mechanized and indestructible soldier. Complete with an immersive heads-up display, bullet-resistant armor from the helmet down, and an exoskeleton that preserves a trooper’s stamina, it’s clear to see that this suit can make a formidable foe out of any serviceman. Equipped with 59 features in total, the majority of which have not been disclosed to the public fully, the testing of the armor has been years in the making as the Russian defense sector is pulling out all the stops to perfect the suit. It’s reputed by Rostec that upon embarking in field engagements the soldier will feel a 30 percent decrease in the overall weight of the suit as updates to the armor are being worked on between now and the date of final release. This new innovation in Bionic armor is projected to roll-out onto a battlefield near you in 2022. Fingers crossed that we never have to see it in action.

The Walking Dead Premieres With A Bang

October 22, 2017 AMC’s “The Walking Dead” season eight premiered with a bang, literally. Rick and the gang were back at it in an explosive packed premier that was filled with wisecracking and gunfire. Episode one, entitled “Mercy” began with a mysterious foray into a Grimes fantasy where the Alexandria community is finally at peace. We’re offered sporadic glimpses at this throughout the episode with little to no context. While this has come to be expected from followers, what’s new here is to
see the show’s main baddie Negan on the total retreat. This Sunday’s season opener is certainly one to be remembered as it stands on its own two legs as a strong showing by the productions team on all fronts. The special effects and setting remain vibrant as ever. The actions of the Grimes gang has an air of renewed confidence as they ride into all out warfare with the saviors. It’s a meticulous and well-planned offensive by the characters, and equally as executed in terms of the episode’s overall aesthetic by the AMC team. Rustic and decayed seems to be the episode’s theme this evening as
tonight’s undead standout as some of the ugliest ever seen. In regards to the action, there hasn’t been this much gunfire in one scene in so long much to the relief of fans. This episode marks a clear departure from what series faithfuls dubbed “soap opera” syndrome. At one point in time all can agree that the show was moving at a pace too slow with little to no plot development. Well, not anymore. It’s an all out war, as the the show hasn’t seen this much action between factions since the Governor’s arc. Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan is back and more charismatic than ever as he delivers his one liners superbly
and succeeds in arousing fear. Perhaps one of the show’s standout performances thus far is awarded to Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes who’s found himself back in rare form as the beloved leader we all missed in season seven. He’s back, and honorably savage as ever as his leadership style appears as a blatant contrast to Negan’s. Thematically, it goes without saying that this series’ showing pits tyranny against equity. There’s a resounding sense of revolution in the air as all characters have resolved to make their allegiance to Rick as a leader known. When the saviors are presented with an ultimatum
of surrender they resolve not to and pay dearly as their home base is left absolutely vulnerable by the end of the episode. Episode one, in all its explosive and gore spewing grandeur was very much standoffish as Rick made it known through his actions that the same ole gun-toting zombie slashing sheriff we all know and love is back in town. Be sure to tune in this week Sunday on 9 pm ET/PT on AMC to catch the aftermath of Alexandria’s declaration of war on the Savior community.

This year has been extraordinary for many of Stephen King’s novels. His novels already make up a portion of the classic horror films in the industry and many have or already are coming with an adaptation this year. Novels like IT, Gerald’s Game, and 1922 are being made into films, whereas novels like Mr. Mercedes and a recurring setting (Castle Rock) are being made into a television series. One of the most recent adaptations of King’s novels is 1922. Netflix launched the
adaptation by director Zak Hilditch this past Friday. For anyone looking to watch a horror film with a bit of jump scare action, 1922 isn’t the film to watch. Although if you have a fear of rats, this film is something to be wary of because of the gruesome scenes that involve them. If not, you might just finish the film with chills going down your spine. 1922 is of course based in the year 1922 in Hemingford Home, Nebraska. The film is narrated by the protagonist Wilfred James. James is a farmer who cared for nothing more in life than having his land, son and a subservient wife. Unfortunately for him his wife Arlette James no longer want to live the farm life and decided she was go-
ing to sell the 100 acres that was inherited to her from her father. She planned to move to the city of Omaha, take her son Henry James with her, and open her own dress shop. This angered James and with the help of his son he murdered his wife. After this, the story continues with a series of unfortunate events for him and his son. Thomas Jane who plays the role as Wilfred James did an amazing performance with his character. There was something almost chilling for him to play a man so serious-minded, malicious, selfish, and slowly lose his sanity. If it wasn’t for the obvious reasons like him murdering his wife, he would seem like any other countryman with
no sign of him losing his mind. As stated before rats played a part in the film. They played a crucial part and understanding it makes a difference in the film. To most they can could have just been another pest living on the farm, but in this film, they played into the guilt of the protagonist Wilfred James. They held an uneasy atmosphere for James, which then helped with creating a thrilling suspense for the film. In regards to the storyline, it felt like halfway through the film it was getting too long. Although I understand the importance of hearing the storyline in order to comprehend the ending,

This episode is mainly concerned with the planet Mandalore and has three huge problems with it. The first thing that bothered me was that weird annoying trope where a character has to keep proving themselves to a cause when they’ve already done enough. They ask this person “prove yourself loyal to the cause, to Mandalore” and the character being addressed has literally risked her life trying to save her people and planet from the machinations of the Empire. And then, once the character has spent several episodes that seem to transition them into a certain role, they give it up to someone else. We are reintroduced to a character from a precursor series, “Star Wars the Clone Wars,” and it’s nice but as the episode goes on it becomes clear why they were reintroduced.
What was the point of all of the character growth if they were just going to give up their position to someone else. I feel like it was done because if they had kept going on the path the character was on, then they would have split our main characters apart. So, although I understand why they did what they did, I don’t have to be happy with it. The third aspect of the season opener that really bugged me was that it didn’t feel like a season opener. It starts off as a continuation of the story from last season and it’s exactly that. While there was a differentiation in tone, story and conflict in each of the season, this season feels the same as the last. If it was just going to be the same plotline, why not just extend last season to 45 episodes. Although, I suppose I can understand the way it’s structured because the current villain had not yet been defeated, story wise, there
should have been more time spent on it. I am very underwhelmed for this season with no real expectations for it. There have been some amazing moments in the show, and although the season trailer tried to tease some great dramatics to happen, I’m not really sure that there are going to be any. What it looks like they are going to be doing is using this season to build the rebel forces up, while keeping a good amount of references to other Star Wars properties, more like Rouge One, to keep us interested. While long time viewers are already invested in these characters, hopefully the story will continue to be something that not only keeps their audience interested, but expands and supports the star wars universe.
there needed to be more of something in order to keep interest. Everything seemed to be occurring 30 minutes before the ending of the film. The music, however, went well with the scenes and really helped with grabbing back the attention. As stated before Stephen King’s novels are classics and if reading the books is something you’re not interested in then I would recommend to watch the films. They definitely create a chilling atmosphere and something to talk about with friends or family. Most importantly they can be added to the list of movies to watch during Halloween season.

Oh Wonder the wondrous British alt-pop duo performed Wednesday night, October 18 at the Shrine auditorium for the celebration of their new album “Ultralife,” which happens to be the name of their tour. Ever since the release of the “DIY” album they have received international success since releasing their second album this past July, with “Ultralife” being a success amongst listeners. Once the crowd began to enter the Shrine auditorium they started gathering for Jaymes Young, an upcoming indie artist from Seattle who was opening for Oh Wonder. A few of the fanatics were there to see Jaymes Young perform singles like “Habits of my heart” and “Dark star.” The crowd waited patiently, drinking beer and food that the Shrine had to offer. Finally, he stepped out onto the stage wowing the audience with his music. His voice echoed throughout the entire auditorium while the crowd sang along. After Young’s setlist was over it left fans satisfied before Oh Wonder took the stage. There was a 25-minute intermission and then Oh Wonder took the stage much to the excitement of eager fans. The fans were especially ready to hear “Ultralife” live for the first time. There was wild screaming and cheering for Josephine and Anthony, the lead singers of the duo band. Their popularity in the U.S. came as a shock to them once they hit the stage and the crowd screamed their heart out. The crowd sang along with them throughout every song along with the new album. By the end of the performance, everybody was amazed welcoming the duo to return again to L.A. Oh Wonder performed Wednesday, at the Shrine auditorium promoting their new album Ultralife with Jaymes Young opening for the dynamic duo.

Superstition premiered September 20 on the SyFy channel and it needs some work, but it’s interesting. The show takes place in the small town of La Rochelle in Georgia where main character Calvin Hastings, played by Brad James, comes back home after spending 16 years of service in the military. The family runs the town’s morgue and funeral home while simultaneously
combating the supernatural happenings of the town. His parents, Isaac played by Mario Van Peebles and Bea played by Robinne Lee, lost contact with him after his departure and have opposite reactions to his return. Giving away more of the plot would ruin it for any potential watchers, but here’s a brief introduction to the pilot, a strange and mysterious figure enters town and brings hell with him in the form of coins with snake designs. The acting from the main characters is pretty good and most of the characters are likeable, though it should be
advised to not get attached since the show appears to be trigger happy. The dialogue also deserves props, at times it gets really ridiculous and to some extent the show will poke fun at it. At one point Calvin references “Supernatural,” a fairly popular show on the channel The CW that deals with, you guessed it, the supernatural. The tone of the show is definitely campy, with its B horror movie vibes. The style of the show is also a bit over the top. The house set is a prime example of this, but it doesn’t take away from the show.
The special effects on the other hand are pretty bad, this wouldn’t be a huge problem, but this is a show that relies heavily on effects that go hand in hand with the story. So when something important to the storyline like the snakes look silly, it can take away from what’s happening on the screen. Another thing that can draw watchers out of the experience are the choreographed fight scenes. The issue is that sometimes these scenes look obviously fake. This wouldn’t be a big issue if weren’t for that fact that the fight scenes are usually
paired with special effects which just make them look even more awkward. Overall this show isn’t bad, it has potential to get better and if the season continues on with a strong plot it can probably be great, only time will tell. If the show seems up your alley, you can watch the first episode on demand, on SyFy’s website, or the SyFy YouTube channel.

DRINKING? I’m Giving It A Shot

There’s an argument to made on the toxicity of drinking. It’s a substance that can, when taken to its extreme’s, become a major controlling force. The same sentiment can be made for pretty much any substance. But as it is embedded into the culture so thoroughly, people often succumb to it, bringing more attention and problems to it than many other substances popular in this decade. I drink because I’m human. Now the theoretical debate of what it means to be human is going way off topic so I’ll just say this: the two reasons is because I’m in a social situation that calls for it and to temporarily sedate harmful thoughts. I’m at the stage in my life where most people I know want to go to bars. Their default hang out is grabbing a drink at either an cheap kinda hole in the wall, or grab a high priced specialty drink from some hipster bar I would only visit if other people wanted to go. Not that I have a problem hanging out at a bar it’s
just that i would rather go to other places. When people say “let’s throw a party and get smashed” I awkwardly let out “or we could go to a bookstore and start a book club”. We can still drink, I don’t necessarily have a problem with the act it’s just the going out part I’m a bit weirded out about. In fact I’ve alway been down for grabbing some vodka or some wine and hanging out and watching a movie, playing board games or something. I feel like people like to go out, because its gives some grandiose validity to what they are doing. While staying at home just feels like they aren’t drinking the way they are supposed too. I suppose the zeitgeist of the college/young adult world is to go out, make a big uproar about it, post it on social media and then go home and talk to others about great your night was (with embarrassing visual aides e.g. photos, to harass your friends with later). I will drink a tall can to relax, or when I’m just having a tough day. It’s a small temporary reprieve from all troubles, and of course it’s not the answer to said troubles, it
temporarily helps lessens the impending emotions. In the past, there had been a slight struggle to keep the alcohol intake at a comfortable level. Because I am fallible and things will sometimes get out of control and i’ll drink to much. It a common miscalculation on all of humanity part, the idiocy to handle more than we can possibly can. As a young adult i have fallen into a trend that’s very popular about my age group which is avoiding the real problem and focusing on other things in an effort to avoid them. And drinking is just another way for me to avoid whatever is troubling me. Although I’ve seen what alcoholism does to other people so I have tried to deal with my problems head on like an actual human adult. As they said on Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe, “You have to be honest about how bad it feels so you can move on.” At the end of the day, I’m a social drinker. It wasn’t anything forced on me or i was raised on it just something that i just fell into. I drink because I am a human( I swear I am, I promise).

A Day In The Life Of Autumn

What makes Rio Hondo a great campus to attend is the diversity that comes with both students and professors alike. However, Autumn Lewis and her friend Keiera Presley agreed that there wasn’t that many black students to be seen on campus. “I remember first stepping on this campus, I realized that there wasn’t a lot of people who looked like me,” recalls Lewis in her earlier days at Rio Hondo. And with that concern in mind, both Lewis and Presley decided to create the Black Student Union in order to unify other black students that may be on campus as well as to announce to other students that there was a different kind of culture walking amongst them. It’s only a matter of importance that students, whichever college campus they may be in, get a chance to experience and interact with other students from different backgrounds and upbringing. Lewis then expresses her disappointment towards the city of Whittier in that
“[they’re] not represented enough in this area of Whittier. . .and Rio Hondo.” In a country that is sometimes reluctantly referred to as “Trump’s America,” it’s crucial to try and stay unified as a country and species. “We created this club because we noticed that there wasn’t a lot of black students on campus and we wanted to create unity between black students and the rest of the population,” said Lewis in regards as to why she co-created the club. Though the Black Student Union Club is still in its infancy, there are plenty of opportunities to interact with both Lewis and Presley along with other members who consist of 15 other students and counting. Lewis goes on to inform that there are plans to possibly hold an event during this semester’s finals and a definite plan to hold something for Black History Month next February. If there’s an interest to join or even just to check out what the club is all about, they will be having their next meeting October 30 at 4:30 pm in room LR-128.

Sunday night, October 15th, Twitter began to stir when actress, Alyssa Milano, started a social media movement for women to speak up about sexual harassment by tweeting two words, me too. The actress commented on her intentions as to why, saying she hoped it would bring light to the situation and the severity of it. That Sunday night alone, Milano’s tweet was retweeted 17,000 times and the numbers have only grown since then. Women started to share their experiences along with the hashtag, many of them speaking up for the first time. This movement made its way to Facebook, Instagram, and many blogs as more and more started to break the silence of their experience. Twitter now has more than 1.2 million tweets under this hashtag with more coming in everyday. Women all throughout the social media realm banded together to support one another. This hashtag is the biggest women empowerment movement this year, getting more attention than any feminist hashtags previous,
reportedly being 100’s of times in size. Fellow Rio Hondo student, who wishes to remain anonymous, commented on the movement, “I lived with what had happened to me and kept happening for seven years, and up until recently I never spoke up in fear of what could happen. That fear came from the loneliness that I felt because I didn’t think anyone else could’ve related to me. When I saw the hashtag and the amounts of women who all had a similar story it gave me a sense of peace because, I finally felt like what happened to me wasn’t my fault and me speaking up was the right choice.” This movement gave women the chance to break their silence and a lot found their peace as well because they carried a burden for so long. With all of the attention being brought to the issue people are starting to take allegations of sexual abuse and assault more serious, rather than being a topic that is discussed behind closed doors many are starting to treat the issue with the respect it deserves. Many talk shows, like Jimmy Kimmel, started to speak on the hashtag. Celebrities throughout Hollywood also spoke up on their sexual abuse experiences they’ve run into while in their line of work. All of this following just a week after the Harvey Weinstein accusations. With the power of their voice women everywhere are making waves in the world today on how they should be treated no matter the circumstances, making it known that it isn’t acceptable to do something just because someone is a woman. The “Me Too” movement has become the first major step in ending the silence about sexual harassment and abuse.

When asked what makes Halloween so special I’d say it’s staying in on a cold night, popping in a cheesy slasher film, and wolfing down some candy corn. You know what type of movie, the one where the killer turns out to be the main characters boyfriend and she looses her friends as a result. But yeah anyways, Halloween is not just about eating candy or watching countless slasher flicks. Now as college student, it’s about the next costume party, and spending time with your fellow ghouls. As the month of October draws on, more and more people get into the spirit. Decorations get put up, and people begin to stockpile on candy. Costumes are being made and bought in preparation of the big night. Being too old to trick or treat but not nearly old enough to not dress up there is a grey area that college students fit into. On the weekends there’s countless costume parties and “candy consumption”. Being able to dress up and become a superhero for the weekend can be liberating, while next weekend you can be an A list doppleganger. Going around town in costume can be quite the adventure, especially when you go in a group. Now when it comes to being in spirit there’s gotta be horror movies. Films that get the blood boiling and the heart pounding. Now there are the classics like Halloween and Friday the 13th, and remakes like 2017’s It. Then there’s childhood relics like Casper and The Nightmare before
Christmas. All should be viewed with the consumption of popcorn and candy, obviously. Looking back, Halloween was the one night where you could be anyone and you got free candy from strangers to horde over until thanksgiving. Now as a young adult the spirit continues, with costume parties and and themed work places. Truly however, there’s something about it all, the carving of Pumpkins, the cheap plastic masks, and the cotton spider webs that line the hedges throughout your neighborhood. As a kid you counted down the days till that one night where you can finally wear that costume you spent so much time creating, or begging your parents to buy. Every October the nostalgia comes back and fuels the actions of many, maybe this year will be different, this year you’ll finally dress up as a ghoul and carve that pumpkin. College students rejoice, it’s that time of the year again.

Throughout the years we’ve seen boybands emerge and eventually disband all in what feels like the blink of an eye. One Direction seems to be in an everlasting hiatus. It all started with Zayn Malik, although he left the band to venture into his solo career he will always be considered part of what made One Direction so great. So far, only two members out of four have released solo albums, Harry Styles and Niall Horan. Both received an incredible response from the public, but by far the one that takes the cake would have to be Flicker by none other than the Irish boy himself Niall Horan. What makes Flicker superior to the rest of the albums are the lyrics. His album contained songs that not only had an unusual rhythm to them, but also incredible lyrics that made your heart skip a beat. Horan is by far the most relatable of the group by sharing his innermost personal thoughts in a song.
He is not as much of a household name as Styles and Malik, but I see great things for him in the nearby future. No disrespect to them but it’s nice to hear what the quiet boy has to say. There’s a song on the album that’s not like the rest. “Seeing Blind,” track number three is featuring country superstar Maren Morris. This specific song spoke to me, I closed my eyes and it helped me paint a scene. That scene in a romance film where both protagonists first lay eyes on each other and they just know that they’ve found their missing piece. Fight me on this all you’d like, but remember when I say this, Niall Horan will be the equivalent of what Justin Timberlake is to N’Sync. He’s got the boy-next-door feel, the charisma and now the album to prove it. Welcome to One Direction 2.0. To those who say they’ve broken up, don’t worry they’ll be back and remember this. Haters gonna hate, it’s okay because “That’s What Makes You Beautiful.”

Rio Hondo’s women’s Volleyball team defeats LA Trade Tech Beavers 3-0 Friday evening, October 20th, at home. Coming off of a loss Wednesday night against Mt. Sac, the women’s volleyball team came out fighting for the win on Friday. The game started off back to back but Rio Hondo quickly gained a

lead with strong serving runs that put them ahead of LA Trade Tech, who wasn’t able to gain momentum off of the Roadrunners. They quickly got a win into the match ending the first set 25-13. Starting the second set the Roadrunners were battling to gain a point lead as LATT had their eyes set on taking that game. With a smart time out by head coach, Teddi Esko, she was able to regroup the team and get them back into a fight-
ing mode. The second match closed out with the Roadrunners on top, 25-18. Going into the third match Rio Hondo set up some strong offensive plays executed by outside hitter, Bree Newton, and middle blocker, Andrea Sanchez leaving LATT defenseless with no block or digs. LATT was not about to throw in the towel, pushing for each point they could throughout the match, but the Lady Roadrunners kept their momentum up,

Former Rio Hondo student and current LA Trade Tech student Peter Malagon stepped into the boxing ring this past weekend in Riverside versus Cody Ryan Manley. The nineteen year old is on his way to a successful career in Muay Thai fighting. Peter does not only have dreams of becoming pro but also aspires to be a prosperous engineer. He trains eight hours a day everyday of the week to be able to make weighins. Asides that he still manages to make time for school, work and family. His main goal in life are to finish school with a degree in Engineering but also make a name for himself in the fighting industry. “It’s all about mentality, I think about why I’m doing it and how this is what it takes and in the long run I know It’ll pay off. I want to be a world champ you know!” Malagon says. His coach Elias Noriega, has been training him for over two years. Malagon considers him a second dad because of all the time they spend together at the gym. “If he keeps training the way he is he’d be very successful in the sport. He has the ability to go into kickboxing, MMA or even boxing itself; Go hard or go home!” says coach Elias. A day before the
fight Malagon was sparring and injured his left leg. He went into the match knowing his injured leg would possibly cost him the fight. The fight started off intense, seconds into the first round Peter had his opponent where he wanted him. He tossed him against the ropes a couple times, threw in some kicks with his right foot and was able to throw in some punches as well. In the second round Malagon’s opponent came back into the ring stronger than the first. He threw in some punches, and one of the punches he threw he hit Peter right on his nose causing him to start bleeding. Malagon’s coach and trainers tried to maintain the bleeding but it was impossible. The ref had to call the fight due to the continuous bleeding. The winner was unanimously Cody Ryan Manley. Both fighters did their thing and Malagon put up a good fight, going in with an injury that he was yet to recover from the previous day and his nose bleeding within the fight. Despite the duration of the match, Malagon made sure to let the audience know what he is capable of. The fact that he was brave enough to go
up against a man ten years older than him that possibly had many more years of experience than he did shows how much he loves the sport. This is only the beginning for him, he is set to fight again in November. This is not the last time you will be hearing about Peter Malagon.

Los Angeles Chargers and Rams Both Victorious in Week Seven of the NFL

It’s quite the time to be a Los Angeles sports fan. The Dodgers are heading to the World Series and both Los Angeles football teams earned victories and held their opponents scoreless this past Sunday. The Chargers and Rams both came away with 20+ point victories in week seven of the NFL season. The Rams blitzed the Arizona Cardinals in London.
Los Angeles exploded for 20 points in the second quarter, leading to a 23-0 halftime lead for the Rams. Los Angeles continued to hold the Cardinals scoreless in the second half with tenacious defense. The defense was flying around, even injuring Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer. Jared Goff, Rams’ quarterback, had himself a good game. He completed 22 of his 37 passes for a total of 235 yards and one touchdown. He ran for a touchdown as well, leading the Rams to a 33-0
Joe Thomas Consecutive Snap Streak Comes to End

Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns recently broke the streak of most consecutive snaps in a row this season. Thomas played in a total of 10,363 consecutive snaps in a row. Thomas has played every offensive down for the Browns since he entered the league back in 2007. In that time period Joe Thomas has played for six different head coaches, 22 different quarterbacks, and 69 different running backs. Thomas has been the only bright spot for this organization since he entered the league as he has been apart of 10 Pro Bowl teams in his career. Even all the good runs, must come to an end. This past Sunday in a game against the Tennessee Titans, Thomas sustained an apparent arm injury midway thru the 3rd quarter in Sundays game. Thomas was taken to the locker room, and his consecutive snap streak finally came to an end at 10,363 in a row. Joe Thomas later commented on the injury calling it “a routine block, something that I have done a million times,” Hue Jackson head coach of the Browns called it a heartbreaking injury.
“He is a guy that keeps us all going moving forward.” Hue Jackson said. This morning, the Cleveland Browns confirmed after an MRI that it was clear that Thomas had suffered a torn triceps in his left arm and would be sent to the IR for the remanding of the season. Joe Thomas himself announced on twitter that he would be having surgery really soon, and his season is over after only 7 weeks. Fans and Athletes all around the world went to twitter in sorrow and prayers for the future hall of fame tackle, as signs of respect and pure appreciation of what Joe Thomas has done for the NFL. We hope to see Joe Thomas back in action by the start of next season.

He did, however, come away with a couple touchdown passes to go with his 183 yards. The victory was the third straight for the Chargers after dropping their first four
games of the season. They now have a 3-4 record and sit in third place of the AFC West. The Rams have a bye in week of the NFL season. The Chargers head to New England to play the defending Super Bowl Champions, the Patriots. It should be a fun, high-scoring game as the Chargers’ Philip Rivers duels with the Patriots’ Tom Brady. With 43 seconds game left in the game, frustrated Steph Curry threw his mouthpiece at the baseline where official Scott Wall was standing. He was immediately ejected from the game. Seconds later, Kevin Durant was ejected for yelling at the referee. As the players walked to the locker room, they were booed by fans and Durant flashed them the ring finger to remind who had the ring. The Warriors aren’t having a good season and both players know that. They started the season against the Houston Rockets where they lost 122-121. They beat the New Orleans Pelicans but were outplayed by the Memphis Grizzlies. The Warriors can’t afford to get their star players ejected from the game especially during fourth quarter. Power forward Draymond Green says he knows it’s a hit to the team when both start players are ejected. “I’ve got to talk to those guys and let them know that we need those guys on the floor and then maybe we can win a game. But right now, we’re not good because guys are getting ejected.” said Green. Curry had a game high with 37 points but was having foul trouble all night. Curry felt some of the ref’s calls should have been in his favor. “That last play, I thought
I got fouled, and my frustration boiled over. I did something stupid. I deserved to get kicked out, and that’s what happened. Obviously, I’ll learn from it and try not to do it again,” said Curry in the postgame interview. Durant felt Curry was also fouled and let the ref know right away. “I felt Steph got fouled on that drive, and I let Wall know about it, and he threw me out,” said Durant in the postgame interview. Curry was asked if he threw it on purpose and said no. Curry said he had better aim and would’ve hit the ref if he was trying. “I didn’t throw my mouthpiece at the ref. I got better aim that that. I threw it out of frustration,” said Curry. Now the league has to decide whether or not to suspend Curry or just fine him. Curry doesn’t believe he deserves a suspension. “I’ve thrown my mouthpiece plenty of times and thrown it on the floor. It’s probably not the best thing to do, but I’ve done it. I own up to it. I don’t think it’s a suspension or anything. My pockets will be a lot lighter for sure, though,” said Curry.
