The El Paisano staff attended the Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ (JACC) Southern California Conference on Oct. 14 at Cal State Fullerton. Placing in on-the-spot and
mail-in contests, El Paisano came away with a total of nine awards that Saturday evening. Journalism students from all around southern California flooded into Cal State Fullerton’s student union building to attend workshops, listen to keynote speakers and compete in on-the-spot

competitions. The JACC event kicked off with keynote speaker Walter Baranger. Baranger had spent more than 40 years with the New York Times. His speech was the topic of the event’s News Writing and Opinion El Paisano’s Editor-in-Chief, Ramon Alvarado was awarded third place

Fires Assaults California MALENA LOPEZ Staff Writer

Fires in California impacted thousands of people as Orange County Fire Department evacuated 5,000 homes last Monday morning due to major canyon fire that broke loose in Anaheim Hills. Wildfire then broke out Friday in Santa Rosa, killing 34 people so far and causing damage to 3,000 buildings and 34,000 acres. What is being known as Canyon Fire No 2 forces residents of Anaheim, Tustin and Orange to evacuate their homes as the fast moving fire grew. Hundreds of firefighters from different fire task forces were brought to the scene trying their best to tame the fire but the high winds made its direction difficult to predict. As of 2 p.m. Monday, the fire had covered over 2,000 acres, covering the skies in smoke and ash. The fire continued to grow overnight and by Tuesday there were six fixed-wing aircraft and 14 helicopters who came in to assist. 26 percent of the fire had been tamed by Tuesday night leaving 8,000 acres destroyed. As of Wednesday 60 percent of the fire has been tamed leaving the Orange County Fire Department to conclude that 100 percent of the fire should be fully tamed by Saturday. Until then,

several schools in the area were forced to stay closed for safety precautions. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. A few days after the chaos of Canyon Fire No 2 ended, the chaos continued in Santa Rosa with a wildfire destroying over 3,000 buildings, causing 34 deaths, dozens missing and 1.2 billion dollars in damages. The names of those deaths and missing people are still being updated and posted on a Santa Rosa emergency page. Sonoma County Sheriff Office forced a mandatory evacuation Friday as the fire spread at 40 mph burning 34,000 acres. Within the first couple hours Friday, eight people had died and about 8,000 had evacuated. By Sunday dozens of fixed wing aircrafts came to fight the flames resulting 65 percent of the fire to be contained. This made it okay for residents to go back to their homes to collect any items if possible and to evaluate the damages sustained. For any further information Orange County is providing non-emergency information lines for each city in the area and Santa Rosa is updating their emergency page providing information for residents and emergency evacuation drills.

Rio Hondo consists of students from all backgrounds. For some students like Giovanni Manjarrez, school is the only place they feel like they can truly be themselves. Manjarrez, a member of spectrum, stated that, “Two semesters ago I found out about spectrum through the club rush. They make me feel comfortable being myself, something I don’t feel when I’m at home.” Rio Hondo offers many clubs that any student can be part of. A place for any student is available and clubs can always be created if felt like there isn’t.

This year has marked the 29th anniversary of National Coming Out Day and Spectrum club held an event Wednesday, October 11th at Rio Hondo. Spectrum is a club that is a safe and inclusive environment for students of all genders and sexuality. A day to celebrate those who have come out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer(LGBTQ). National Coming Out Day is important for the LGBTQ community and Spectrum was able to help bring awareness to this day at Rio Hondo.
Co-President of Spectrum, Mariel Cid says, “ Our goal for this events is to let the LGBTQ students at Rio Hondo know they are welcomed and create a safe space for all students.” The event was located at the upper quad and consisted of a large rainbow balloon arch with a booth behind it. This booth had pins, snacks, and the co-president with a member of spectrum informing other students about the club. Cid let people know that being in the club makes students feel safer and they talk about stuff they usually don’t feel comfortable telling other people.

NEWS Montebello’s 97th Anniversary
People from all walks of life came out to Montebello’s 97th Anniversary parade and festival. Festival goers were able to dance and eat while enjoying the festivities.

Montebello celebrated its 97th anniversary this past weekend with an annual 5K run/walk, parade and festival. Many community members and people from different cities came together to watch the parade as well as support family members participating in the 5K. The parade was simply breathtaking, representing everything the Montebello community stands for. Marching bands, cheerleaders
and flag dancers came out to represent local high schools. Military institutes showing their pride and dedication to their city. The parade consisted of peoples from different backgrounds. There were folklorico dancers, mariachi bands as well as Spanish horse performances that represented Hispanic culture perfectly. “Me encanta que representan a mi mi querido México aquí en América por qué muchos tienen miedo de representar a su cultura para

que sociedad los acepte pero para mí prefiero que se note de donde vengo!” stated Anna Martinez local resident. African-American performers came out and amazed everyone, containing so much energy in their dance performance and rhythm in the instruments they were playing, that had everyone with a smile. Local Girl and Boy Scout troops marching with their members as well as promoting their cookies during the parade added a sweet touch. There was a special moment during the event when women with breast cancer drove by, many cheers and claps followed that really showed the support the community has for women fighting for their lives. The parade wouldn’t be a Montebello parade without an Oldies Car show because that’s what seemed to have the whole community on their feet. “Montebello is known for the oldies car shows we have one out here almost every week, it represents not only Latino culture but other cultures you know, it brings us together and that’s what makes this community so ESTEPHANY RODRIGUEZ/ EL PAISANO NEWS

There the city council gave a huge thanks to everyone who participated and that helped make this year’s parade so special. Local schools took this opportunity to give out rewards to students as well since loved ones were there. Local vendors came out to sell food which was such a success that they sold out completely. selling Mexican hand-made objects starting from wallets, bags, bracelets etc. and to promote local businesses as well. Everyone had such an amazing time they are already looking forward to next year’s parade. Montebello truly showed what a community is all about and how special of a city it is. They show tons of support for one another and that brings out the best in people.

It was a busy weekend for Rio Hondo’s speech and debate team since they traveled to the Gary Rybold Tournament hosted by Irvine Valley College on Friday and then to the Crossman Invitational held at
El Camino College on Saturday and Sunday. The team was led by their coach, Grant Tovmasian, alongside devoted past competitors of the team who committed their weekend to help the newly formed team prep for topics in parliamentary debate.
The team also participated in IPDA debate, which is a more individual free thinking event where the rounds are more conversational. Rio Hondo brought home silver for parliamentary debate, won by none other than the forensics President and Vice President, Saul Garcia and
Jon Kaldas. Brandon Leon won the team’s first gold of the season in IPDA while Saul Garcia was awarded bronze. The team was also awarded three speaker awards achieved by Saul Garcia, Kevork Abechian, and Felix Rodriguez. It was beyond a doubt a long
and busy ordeal for Rio Hondo’s speech and debate team, but from what we clearly see the team’s wit matched with their tenacity allowed them to endure anything that came their way.

received more than eight awards. “What can I say; I feel like a proud mom watching her kids succeed,” journalism advisor Wendy Carrera said about her students’ JACC success. El Paisano will compete in the JACC State Conference in March of next year. They’ll surely be looking to add more awards to their growing collection.

Automation Taxation Proposed in San Francisco OLIVIA VENEGAS Staff Writer

Automation technology in San Francisco is increasing in development and production. This actually means robots are taking over some jobs which raises questions and concerns about job security. The rise of automation cannot be stopped but the process can be slowed down. Due to a possible tax, the speed of automation produc-
tion could be stalled enough to give the people enough time to transition into this robot-servants environment. San Francisco city supervisor Jane Kim is on the pursuit of an automation tax towards production. The “robot tax” hopes to serve many purposes such as providing financial security to displaced workers, raising wages in jobs like child and health care, and possible free community college enrollment so that individuals can pursue careers
in automation or just higher education. Most students at San Francisco State University are unaware of the matter they may face after graduation. Student Amanda Gutierrez was concerned about what it would mean to workers even though she had not heard of automation, “It’s interesting but what about the employees that do these jobs?” At this moment there are jobs that automation technology can and cannot do. This
tax is to help people, and not companies that implement automation in the workplace since most of them disagree on the tax. As president of many robotic and technology companies, Jeff Burnstein is aware of the public’s concern. Contrary to popular belief, Burnstein claims, “...We’re really good at creating new jobs. We can’t always define them.” Burnstein strongly believes that automation will
create new jobs due to his observation of the robotic industrial history, through which he came to the conclusion that, “over twenty years shows whenever [industrial] robot sales rise, unemployment falls.” It is true, the rise of technology does create jobs. Companies are going to need employees for the maintenance and manufacturing of the robot workers. These are the type of jobs that did not exist decades ago.
The Illusion of Protection Within the Realms of Mass Surveillance JAIME APARICIO Staff Writer

Since the horrific attacks conducted on 9/11, the American people have wondered whether or not the country has left itself vulnerable to future terrorist attacks both foreign and domestic. This is where the proposed bill of the USA Liberty Act comes into
play in protecting the safety of the American people and their interests. Introduced by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, the newly revised Liberty act will be incorporated into making sure any foreign threats are properly investigated and that terrorists don’t come close to making it on American soil. Or so, the government would allow you think.
The USA Liberty Act was introduced to replace the soon-to-be-expired section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that watches over foreign threats that wish any harm against the United States of America. However, what the people behind the “new and improved” act don’t want the US citizens to know is that the power of surveilling foreign threats

I thank the many members who have worked on this bill for months and look forward to bringing it up in the House Judiciary Committee soon.” This supposed new oversight is just another elaborate scheme to continue to spy on the American people without any real restrictions. Although it may seem to some citizens that the government keeping a close personal eye on its own people is a small price to pay, think about this, how much further will the government go abusing its power and the trust of its citizens in order to ensure that no more innocent lives are taken in the name of terrorism? It’s definitely something to ponder when there’s constant worry of foreign attacks and maybe the occasional domestic attack of a man who decides to bear arms raining down bullets on festival attendees. So would we be willing to sacrifice our privacy in exchange for supposed “safety?’ Only time will tell. Scientists Discover Giant Binary Black Holes GILBERTO ESPAÑA Staff Writer

Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) have been occupied in the center of massive galaxies for decades. According to Scientists, these black hole pairs have ranged between thousands to billions of Solar masses and are the main purpose of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Astronomers discovered the black hole pairs by combining data from a number of different ground-based and space-based instruments. The single supermassive black hole data was stored in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the ground-based Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) in Arizona. They also had near-infrared data from the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and X-ray data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. The black hole pairs
formed when two galaxies collided and merged with each other forcing the black hole pairs to close together. As scientist collected the data, they found out that five out of seven galaxies had Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), which were divided by less than ten kiloparsecs which is over 30,000 light years. As the study was progressing, less than about ten pairs of growing black hole pairs were confirmed based on the X-ray studies. Astronomers have begun to use the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) which will be dedicated space-based gravitational wave detector. As the Supermassive Black Holes (SMBHs) begin to draw closer to each other, they will begin to start producing gravitational waves. The black hole pairs will eventually force to create an even bigger black hole. The process of the black hole pairs will produce a huge amount of energy as their
masses are converted into gravitational waves. This discovery could help scientists distinguish how giant black hole pairs grow and how they create the strongest gravitational wave signals in the world. Astrophysics Professor Sarah Ellison from the University of Victoria stated: “Our work shows that combining the infrared selection with X-ray follow-up is a very effective way to find these black hole pairs.” Supermassive Black Holes grow rapidly when they are interacting. A total amount of four instances of Gravitational waves were detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Virgo Observatory. In a few hundred million years, the Supermassive Black Hole pairs will eventually merge. Scientist have found single black hole pairs all over the universe that have rapidly grown over time.

Newly Named Mineral Discovered and Found in Russia JAIME APARICIO Staff Writer

A new mineral has just been found in one of the few remaining wild oasis on the planet with geological isolation and harsh climate. The new mineral, which was named after researcher Natalia Malik, is called Nataliyamalikite and was discovered in the Kamchatka Peninsula. The region contains 160 volcanoes of which 29 are active. The news of the discovery was published in “American Mineralogist” by Professor Joel Brugger who stated: “The discovery of this new mineral means we will be able to better understand how metals are extracted from deep-seated sources within our planet and concentrated at shallow levels to form economic ore deposits.” It never ceases to amaze how many new discoveries on

this planet are documented and presented to viewers in order to better understand what lies beneath the earth’s ground. As detailed by the Monash scientists who discovered the new mineral, it’s said to contain thallium, a rare and heavy metal known for its poisonous properties. This new mineral is but another discovery added onto to what’s already a staggering number of 150 minerals that are discovered yearly. “This will give us a unique insight into the processes responsible for the geochemical evolution of our planet,” says Brugger. With new species of aquatic creatures and the high number of minerals being uncovered from the deepest parts of the planet, it’s no understatement that the shortage of new things to study will be a problem for current and future scientists alike.

Another year means another Supernatural season; because just like its characters, Supernatural refuses to die. The CW’s flagship show and the longest running American made sci-fi show returned October 12 with its 13th season. The new episode picked up where season 12 left off. Castiel is still dead, Mary is still missing and Lucifer’s son is still freakishly powerful and terrifying. The Winchester have their hands full in the first half of the episode, dealing with the newborn yet fully grown Jack, Lucifer’s son. And, in true Winchester fashion, Dean focuses solely on finding Jack. Because Dean might not be able to find his mom or revive his best friend, but he sure as hell can kill the devil’s son. Jack, although God level strong, has no idea how the human world works. Which is great, because he’s too confused to go on a killing rampage. The guy just wants to find his father, who he insists is Castiel, much to Sam’s confusion and dismay since Castiel’s dead. Just when Sam is trying to explain to Dean that Jack isn’t evil, the angels show up. The “d*cks with wings”, as Dean likes to refer to them, want one thing and one thing only, Jack. A fight ensues in which we find out that an angel blade to the chest won’t kill Jack. A helpful trick since this will unlikely be the last time angels attack. The episode wrapped up the same way most Supernatural episodes do, with Dean having a heartfelt conversation with Sam. Dean’s vulnerability was on full display while they burn Castiel and Jack’s mom, Kelly. A heart wrenching moment since Castiel has been a longtime fan favorite. Only time will tell if Castiel is revived and Jack stays good. For Dean’s sake, I hope so.

Season three of Mr. Robot premiered taking us further down the rabbit hole of Elliot’s madness and the show’s universe. The show continues to step up on the pedal of insanity all the while keeping you glued, compelled to the passenger’s seat. The premiere picked up right after season two’s ending. Elliot was shot by Tyrell, Darlene was now working with the FBI, and everyone near Elliot seems to be amongst their own schemes and devices. Season three saw Darlene continue to deal all her past turmoil of boyfriend being shot in front of her eyes let alone being targeted as being in part responsible for everything that happened in the past. Carly Chaikin (Darlene) really gave a noteworthy performance selling every second of a woman on the last of her legs trying to hang on while the world burns around her. Angela’s new plotline is the most interesting, seeing her still remain the long endearing friend of Elliot while taking advantage of his Dr. Jekyll and My. Hyde depraved mind. Her reasoning you couldn’t help but understand and somewhat get behind her in plans against the overmind oppressing conglomerate E-Corp. Season three took season two’s setup and plot so far and ran with it. The show continued to be a visceral delight capturing the undertones of life in the inner city devoid of hope. Almost every time there was a shot of the city we felt New York City’s grime, gloomy, darkness visually. From The Depression esque scenes of trash everywhere, incautious frenzied people fight one another for resources like water of all things in NYC, to the drowned out colors featured in almost every shot, the show continued the trend of being visual eye candy. Every main player was left desperate and looking for a way for this massive scheme to end,leaving us only wanting more of this already fantastic start to season three.

Riverdale is set in a quaint town where things aren’t exactly what they seem. Based on the Archie Comics from 1939, the show’s attributes are those of a chilly and suspenseful vibe, which is why it’s been compared to Twin Peaks. Brand-new characters will be introduced such as Hiram Lodge, Nick St.Clair, Toni Topaz and a recast of Reggie Mantle. There’s nothing like this anywhere on television which is why the show has become an instant hit. Season two picks up right after the devastating arm robbery gone wrong in season one. Uncertainty, as we learn the ominous fate of Fred Andrews. Tensions rise between friends and families as the event of the shooting impacts their lives dramatically. Theories are created as to why anyone would want to hurt Andrews, one being a gang related hit. Not only is the storyline well put, but the creators find a way to captivate viewers to make them feel as though they’re right next to their favorite characters. A line recited by Pop Tate, the diner owner and witness to the shooting hit me like a ton of bricks: “It was like the Angel of Death had come to Riverdale.” A clue to what the rest of season two might be like. To those who like mysteries with a dark sense of humor, this is show “is without a doubt,” “certainly?” for you.
. The moment i started Jane the virgin, i was very lost. Jumping into this show unprepared In the Premiere, she deals with a huge sophisticated conflict. She face the conflicting issue of dealing with the idea of love and having actual love in your life. She is reunited with an old love of hers and because she’s so desperate to have some sort of love in her life that she will reach out to this idea of a person. The man she reconnects with is someone who she loved a long time ago, and now she’s torn between someone actually has feelings with, and an old flame who she’s being tempted by. While one grew and is a lot more organic, the other is an idea that seems so attractive to her that she’ll ignore her real feelings to obtain it. There’s these two narrators who follow jane and her old flame, who manage to balance each other out. The one who follows jane provides a lot of information, with the other narrator raising a lot of 4th wall breaking questions. The two work well to help those who haven’t see the show before. I’m more interested by ideas presented by the new narrator because it not only examines the show but asks questions that help fill in any gaps in the story. Jane the virgin tries to bring up ideas of money, class and privilege and tries to have a lot of different ideas/themes built into the show. While these ideas are picked up and presented, the overarching romance overshadows any other ideas the show has to offer. This story is built upon a romance narrative that tries its best to be this americanized novella and it weirdly works. It tries to be incredibly dramatic, but because it’s a different american culture, it take a more sensible withdrawn approach to the novella formula. The tv shows tries to convey a real sense relatability but dramatizes itself enough to not only be suspenseful but relatable.

October 9th’s episode of Supergirl was about unhealthily distracting yourself from your feelings with work and realizing that it’s ok to feel bad because when you do, you can finally start to deal with it. Kara Danvers has had a really bad time lately. She sends her Boyfriend away to save him from a poision created to kill his own people, who were invading the earth at the time. Her adopted sister is getting married, her friends and family have all either grown personally or socially and she’s just, the same but sadder. She starts lashing out at work, saying that she’s focusing on her heroics and have no time for her career or social life.She keeps trying to bury herself in her superhero life thinking that is she doesn’t think about her grief, then she’ll be fine. Throughout the episode her friends and family help her face her grief, with an added boost of help from a corporate antagonist and your common comic book crisis(missiles, large objects almost falling on people). Melissa Benoist has usually played supergirl as a very positive and hopeful individual, so seeing her dig into a more sorrowful style of acting was really interesting. While she seemed a bit hesitant to try out a scowl or a brooding face, she seemed to grow into it like breaking in a new pair of shoes. The rest of her supporting characters did as well as they usually do, although they seemed a bit antsy waiting for their turns to speak. Although the season opener was interesting it could’ve been alot stronger story wise. I don’t have to worry though because if you’ve watched this show you know that it can deliver some amazing content. If you haven’t seen Supergirl before, nows the time to jump on the band wagon, every monday at 8/7 central on the CW.
Super Hero Week Legends of Flash Tomorrow

The Flash returned to television for its fourth season October 10. The season premiere included the return of “The Fastest Man Alive” Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and a look at his new suit created by Cisco Ramon/Vibe (Carlos Valdes). Viewers were also treated a peek of this season’s big-bad, The Thinker (Neil Sandilands). Season four’s premiere kicked off like many of The Flash’s past episodes. The opening sequence starts off with Team Flash trying to capture the metahuman, Peek-a-Boo (Britne Oldford). Team Flash successfully captures the metahuman. It doesn’t take long for the squad to remember the absence of their most important member: The Flash. The audience learns through character conversation that Barry Allen/The Flash has been imprisoned in the speed force for six months. This means there’s a six month break in between the ending of season three and the beginning of season four. Since then, Kid Flash has taken the mantle of being Central City’s heroic speedster and his sister, Iris West, has taken the role of leading Team Flash. When a flying, armored samurai invades Central City, he tells Kid Flash, Vibe and the CCPD they have 24 hours to bring him The Flash or he will destroy the planet. Pondering a way to get rid of the samurai, Cisco tells the team he has been working on a way to get Barry out of the speed force without ruining Earth 1 entirely, he just needs one more thing: Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker), a.k.a Killer Frost. At first Team Flash thinks they were unsuccessful, until they get a call informing them Barry was found on the street, however he wasn’t in his right mind. It took a major risk from one of the Star Labs crew members to get Barry back in Flash form. With Barry back and faster than ever, he easily defeats the samurai. When the samurai mask is removed, and we see that it was some type of robot. Team Flash doesn’t know it, but the samurai was just a tool for this season’s villain, The Thinker. Now that Barry is back as The Flash and The Thinker is ready to cause mayhem, season four looks primed to bring us something fresh and exciting. The Flash will continue to air on the CW network every Tuesday at 7

The Legends of Tomorrow are here to “screw things up for the better” in season three. The heroes we want (but don’t need) came back like they never left, or time-jumped. Season three of Legends picked up right where they left off at the end of season two. At the start of the show, we see that the Legends are still in a destroyed 2017 Los Angeles. The heroes are about to get attacked by a Tyrannosaurus Rex before their old captain, Rip Hunter, comes to the rescue. While the Legends think Rip has only been gone for 15 minutes, it’s actually been five years for the time-traveling Rip. In that time, Rip created the Time Bureau to replace the corrupted Time Masters that were disassembled by the Legends in season two. With the Time Bureau now fixing all anachronisms, Rip tells the team their service is no longer needed. We are flashed forwarded six months ahead and see that some of the Legends have been struggling to keep busy without their duty to fix time. When Rory finds the historic Julius Caesar in 2017 Aruba, he calls for the Legends’ help. The Legends head to Rip’s Time Bureau to get their Waverider and let rim know there’s been an aberration in time that hasn’t been caught by his bureau. Rip takes the Legends to the Waverider and shows them it’s not what they remember it being. With the Legends gone, Rip turned the Waverider to a simulation to train his Time Bureau members. Going against the grain like they always do, the Legends steal the Waverider and head to Aruba to get Julius Caesar where he belongs. The team is finally back to doing what they do best. In the end, the season three premiere gave the audience the humor, action, and feel that made the first two seasons enjoyable. The Legends of Tomorrow premiere certainly has fans ready for another adventurous, time-jumping season. It will continue to air on the CW Tuesdays at 9 p.m. pacific time.

After watching the premiere of Arrow season six, I’m most excited by the endless possibilities this season has to offer. The last season finale left us on a cliffhanger, with most of the cast on an island as it explodes while Oliver Queen (the Green Arrow)holds his son on a boat with his dead villain. Now to find out all the fates of our characters watch the show. If you’ve never seen it before, this season premiere is a good jumping on point. After all the fights, romances, and betrayals, the most challenging obstacle for Oliver Queen is having to raise a son that blames him for the death of his mother. This is an issue that he can’t punch or stab, which is what he’s good. He’s a terrible grief counselor. Of course he is bad at it, he’s spent the last five years shooting arrows, mismanaging his relationships and usually being unemployed. This season’s premiere is beautifully constructed; the episode having great pacing when balancing the emotional drama of the current time to the devastating after-effects of the previous explosive ending. For long-time watchers, the acting, effects, fight choreography, and story are all that we’ve seen before. The show’s usual episode structure shines and keeps me interested through all of it, structurally predictable as it is. The only thing I’m really worried about this season is Queen’s son. Although we are having an emergence of amazing child actors (Stranger Things and It), we don’t know enough about his son’s talents. The best possible scenario is that he doesn’t become a hinderance on the plot, his acting is believable, and he is correctly juxtaposed to our main casts. They ended the episode on a cliffhanger so impractical it’s almost on par with the explosive ending of last season. I have no idea what’s happening next, and not only does that seem really scary, but excites me more that I’ve ever experience from the Dc Tv show premieres. Hopefully the show runners can build on what they did last year and continue to headline this ever exciting CW superhero universe.

Wednesday night at the Belasco theatre in Los Angeles, all sorts of people from different backgrounds and ethnicities gathered to headbang along to some heavy bass dubstep music. Many ravers and dancers kept bumping along to the music non stop. Certain groups created a moshpit and people began to dance hard to beat drops and push each other into the middle of the moshpit. Nothing got out of hand, as everyone just moved along to the aggressive bass that shook the whole theater up. The crowd was really into the music as some dancers even sung along to the beat drop. As the crowd hollered for the next beat to drop the DJ on stage yelled “This music s**t is what going to keep us all together,” while he conducted everyone to get ready to jump along to the drop. Finally, Borgore an Israeli dubstep producer who was born and raised in Tel Aviv,

Israel. Borgore is also the founder of buygore records, his tracks have been compared to horror movies, farm animals and sex. Borgore took over the main stage and began his set. and things started to get as what people like to refer to as “turnt”. The whole theater was packed. There was no walking or moving in linear direction. Jumping up
and down, hair being whipped back and forth, after awhile it starts to feel much like a workout. Borgore was really good at keeping a crowd content he not only remixed familiar tracks but would even rap along to some of his songs that included his vocals. Everything seemed just right. Nobody gave eachother a hard time even though some

people accidently spilled their drinks throughout the night. Nothing seemed to bother anyone as the concert’s whole vibe was centered around freedom of positive expression. These type of shows give a dancer an opportunity to wear and dress in whatever expressive/creative form they choose to no matter how
creative or expressive. From endless amount of kandies around wrists to funky rave outfits that made a person stand out. There really just wasn’t anytime to judge and assume a person’s personality. Instead people will dance with one another, strangers becoming lovers and ravers dancing together as a whole.

The Australian EDM artist, Alison Wonderland, took the Novo stage Friday night as part of her American FMUOSAL tour. Friday the 13th brought out a spooky and cold night for Los Angeles. Inside the bar was fully equipped, fully packed, and even added spooky drinks such as The Witch’s Potion for fans. Opening for Wonderland, was Los Angeles native Elohim.The EDM artist is known for hiding her identity and took the stage in a large hooded outfit with sunglasses big enough to cover her face. Her set included some of her hits like Xanax and She Talks Too Much. Elohim’s set hyped up the anticipating crowd waiting for the main event, Alison Wonderland. The sold out show was finally graced with the appearance of their beloved Australian DJ. Wonderland greeted her excited fans from floor level to the balcony level. She began the show with remixes from Cardi B’s Bodak Yellow to Kendrick Lamar’s Humble. Fans danced their hearts out to Wonderland’s remixes and original songs. “She did a great job energizing the crowd with her sound and vibrations. Everyone was in sync and that’s what makes

A Day In The Life Of Alex Rodriguez; a Fading Trump Supporter

President Donald Trump winning the past election has caused separation within the United States. There are those who openly support the newly elected president with pride and joy, while others stand against President Trump for the controversial things he has said openly on camera and on his Twitter account. It can be argued that President Trump was never fit to be president of the United States of America, let alone start a campaign to begin running for presidency. President Trump, to my knowledge, had no prior experience in politics; unless you count his dealings with other business tycoons before and during his appearances in the reality show “The Apprentice.” When it came down to voting for the next president in the 2016 election, the two main candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were left while numerous others dropped one by one before the final race. Based on her experience Clinton seemed to be the more ideal choice based on her past experience as a senator, the majority of America still felt some comfort in placing their vote for Trump, an untraditional noimee. Alex Rodriguez didn’t feel as comfortable voting for Clinton because of the allegations that were placed on her during the election. Since he wanted his vote to count and not be thrown away, Alex voted for President Trump in order to keep his vote with the Republican party. If Alex had been a Democrat, he would have voted for Bernie Sanders if Sanders had stayed firmly in the race for presidency, but alas, in the end, neither Alex nor Sanders got what they wanted. Before judgment is placed on Alex for voting for what some people believe to be the worst president since George W. Bush, Alex doesn’t see himself as a Trump supporter at all. There may be some aspects to Trump’s presidency that Alex does agree with, such as the deportation of any illegal immigrant with a criminal record, but overall, Alex does not agree with how the Trump administration has been running the country ever since the inauguration.

What do I care” - Alex Rodriguez “I got my influences from T.V., uh not really role models but I just, I learned everything that I could from just watching television, reading books and I guess from my dad a little bit and my mom,” explains Alex as we started to dive into what influenced him as an individual growing up. Alex made it clear to say that just because his father is a Republican, that he himself does not follow politics as his father does. The same goes for not supporting Trump for the way he has been acting as president to this day. Alex goes on to express his feelings towards Trump: “I don’t really care that he’s president. You know I’m still here, you know, trying to graduate and transfer he’s not gonna [sway] me away of that. What do I care?” And because he kept his vote republican based, I wanted to see if there was some inkling of support towards Trump and his administration. So when asked if Trump was being misunderstood in any way, Alex went on to elaborate: “Yeah, he brought it all to himself. But some of the things that he says on T.V. is sort of true.” Alex then goes into explaining the ordeal between neo-Nazis and anti-Trump supporters who caused quite the commotion at Charlot-
tesville, Virginia this past August. “He was right about one thing that both sides were to blame because I, as a journalist, I have been to these protests and the anti-Trump side, they start things too.” Alex made sure to point out the flaws between all parties responsible for the ruckus caused at rallies held at universities. Although Alex did indeed vote for Trump, his vote was placed to keep a Republican in the White House and perhaps have America continue to move in a positive direction. However, like many in this country, Alex has been anything but thrilled with the way President Trump hasn’t been holding himself accountable for the things he has said in the name of the United States

The Fear of Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer, these words alone can cause many women to worry. Either you know someone or have a loved one with the disease. Sadly many women don’t find out they carry breast cancer until it’s too late. The most common invasive cancer in women besides lung cancer can be either Ductal Carcinoma, which starts at the milk duct or Lobular Carcinoma, that begins at the lobules. Invasive cancer is when the cell breaks out through the lobules or ducts and make contact with tissue that can spread to the body. Non-invasive is when the cancer is in its place of origin but is yet to develop. One may ask “How do I know if I have breast cancer?” Which is such a good question, the fact that many women are not as informed about the illness as much as they should be is as scary as finding out you have developed the cancer. There are symptoms one must know in order to
catch breast cancer before it worsens. Any rashes, peeling, redness, itchiness, flaking or scaling around the nipple and breasts is an immediate sign. Any pain in the armpits or breast that does not change cycle, a sunken nipple or random discharge from the nipple containing blood is a sign as well. It is important to get a physical check up every year just to make sure one is healthy because one can develop breast cancer without ever even having any of the symptoms. Many women won’t find out they have breast cancer until it is too late. There is no sure way
to prevent the cancer but changing your lifestyle can definitely help reduce the risk of breast and other cancers. Experts say it is important to know your family history since 5 percent of 10 percent of women develop breast cancer due to genetics. One must stay physically active, maintain a healthy weight, eat lots of fruit and vegetables and if one is a mother breast feeding is highly recommended. One must avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, avoid birth control pills and avoid post post-meno-
pausal hormones. Growing up as little girl I was not informed about breast cancer as much as I wish I would’ve been. Breast cancer does not run in my family which is why I never really was informed about it. I strongly believe that all women should have proper knowledge of the illness not only to help themselves live a healthy life but to be able to influence others around them and prevent breast cancer death toll from raising.

[Last Wednesday was] National Coming Out Day, and 23 years ago, I made the decision to come out to my high school classes as a Gay man. It was 1994 and things were very different back then. The news created a media frenzy, and I was the topic of every news channel and newspaper. All of my students were very supportive and the only objections came from parents that did not have a student in my class and from some faculty, including the principal. My objective had been to create a support group for LGBT students in my high school. The board vetoed the idea even though it was supported by the majority of the student population. I will never forget this picture taken for The San Diego Union Tribune newspaper to mark the occasion. A junior high student from another school contacted me with the excuse that he was writing a story for his school’s newspaper. However, after listening to his questions, it became clear he was seeking answers for himself. I took a chance and asked him if he would be interested in visiting a support group for kids his age. I drove him to the
meeting and on his way back, he told me in the car, that he had planned to commit suicide that weekend because he was convinced there were no other kids like him around and that this meeting had changed his mind. Knowing that my actions saved at least one soul, gave me the energy to endure the barrage of criticisms and obstacles faced by people who wanted me fired as a teacher. Today, LGBT support groups are common in most high schools across the nation. P.S. I have so many wonderful memories from this time: -the newspaper reporter who covered my decision to come out, telling me: you know your life would never be the same after this story comes out. -the football team and cheerleaders of my school making a human shield around me to protect me from people picketing the school demanding I be fired -the school custodian turning on the sprinklers on purpose to soak those who were picketing. -the mother of one of my students inviting me to her daughter’s quinceanera and telling me her dentist was Gay and wanted to set me up with him and so many more. National Coming Out Day was
created to commemorate the 1987 March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights. The idea is to promote a safe world for LGBT individuals to live truthfully and openly. Nobody should be forced to come out; it’s a personal choice and decision. The key word in the statement above is “safe” world. Therefore, the first thing to consider when someone is thinking of coming out is whether doing so would put them in any harm. Some of our students live at home and realize that parents may not support the idea and it may cause tension in the home and at times may result in the student being kicked out of his/he home. The student officers of SPECTRUM, Rio Hondo’s LGBT Club recommend to first share the intention of coming out with one of them first in order to get good supportive feedback on what would be the best scenario and time. SPECTRUM meets every Monday from 2:003:00pm in Room 204A.

It always seems to begin with the blackened ribbon under the search bar. Media outcry, and snapshots of the on-site mourning a prolonged shroud of calculation on the behalf of all political officials to which the {insert the name of mass shooting here} pertains. Dismay of the citizenry as flashes of vigil with candlelight grace the screen across the nation in a solemn show of strength and solidarity with {enter the names of those who had their lives upturned by the mass shooting here}. As the citizens make a show out of not living in fear at the thought of terror breaking out in a public place similar to that of which happened just last {insert date and time of the name of mass shooting here}, they persist. Mainstream media notes, that the orchestration of such a grotesque plot, the {insert the location with which the mass shooting will become synonymous with and be referred to by in the future},
could only be carried out by a deeply troubled individual. And so, you see, that this has become a morbidly normal, but pathetically addressed problem as the aforementioned elements are all interchangeable. These days it’s almost like a game of fill in the blank. While a great deal of the factors stay the same in these incidents that are becoming increasingly commonplace, there is but one thing that does not. An administration’s insistence that the enactor of such said savagery, is somehow, not “unlawfully using violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.” A certain administration’s insistence that an individual who is indeed one that looks “American” and aspires to mass murder is somehow not a terrorist. That is unless of course, he fits the bill as what we want the public to believe he is. That is unless of course, he fits the mold of possessing a darker shade and being Islamic. That is unless of course, he could fit mold as
a really really “bad hombre,” and perhaps a “Son of a b***h” who should be standing for the national anthem every time it rings loud and true! But what about when he’s too enthusiastic about the role that his nation’s flag should play in his life? What when he’s too hell-bent on organizing people into crystal clear societal categories like those that once were in American Society? What when he yearns for a return to simpler, “not- so mixed times?” When he’s white? We often tend to grossly ignore the hypothetical that the shooter can be a woman. Or an overweight soccer mom who mysteriously grew more apart from her husband each day. Or, an Indian man by the name of Tyrone, who lashed out in anger at the current system’s injustices. Or GASP, a white man who was for lack of a better phrase, “fed-up.” There’s a social outlining of what has come to define society’s understanding of humans with guns who shoot people where they least expect it in their public place of gathering- a terrorist.
If you’re willing to campaign on being a stand up man of the people, and saying to hell with political correctness, why not call a spade a spade? That is unless of course, that the age old phrase “one man’s terrorist, is another man’s freedom fighter” can be said of our most high elected official today. I, and a sizable population of the whole wide world does, believe that any human no matter their racial classification, political affiliation, sexual orientation, or religious denomination posses an equal capability for cruelty. But perhaps, none as much as that of Donald J. Trump’s capability for cruelty if he’s not willing to refer to {insert name of this month’s mass shooter here}, a Caucasian male who had a infatuation with guns, as what he will forever be remembered to us all as, a terrorist. Apparently, enough, is never enough. As time passes and things change, we grow weary, beginning to “revert back to our daily program, stuck in our ways.”

Standing by the 45th President

“If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything,” this quote by Alexander Hamilton has seen many variations, but the sentiment carries more weight today, in part thanks to the current political climate. A political climate that has made the past 12 months the longest and most tiring months for many. Yet, those in favor of the current administration have a hard time seeing the damage done. One of those people is Taylor, whose name was changed at their request, a part-time professor here on campus. I wrote about Taylor last year just before the election, since being a supporter of the current administration in California was a difficult idea to fathom. I wanted to write about how nobody should
fear voicing their opinion and thought that interviewing a Trump supporter would help me understand the mentality behind those supporting this man. I can’t say that I succeeded in fully understanding, but I gained a better grasp of the situation. After a nightmarish year, I thought I’d check in with these two professors, but was only able to connect with Taylor. “So are you going to ask the question?” Taylor asked before I could say anything. “I stand by my disruptive vote. I still believe he’s certifiably insane. He hasn’t done anything to break things like my state has. He really hasn’t done much of anything.” Arguable. While the 45th president doesn’t seem to do much outside of golfing, going on twitter rants and antagonizing foreign leaders less stable than him, his administration and him have

Every year for Halloween I see the same commentary and arguments about inappropriate costumes. Everything from unnecessarily sexy costumes, culturally appropriated costumes, and morally offensive costumes. Sexy cop, nurse, and nun are par for the course of what one expects to see at Halloween, but the trend that I’ve seen come up more often is disturbingly sexy children’s costumes. Now, many would argue that the costumes aren’t sexy by nature and that we’re perverting the costumes and sexualizing them. I would argue that the creators of these costumes have done it on purpose in order to cater to their pedophilic clientele. There is a basis for this argument since although the mainstream media hasn’t said much about it, a few articles by ABC, NBC and the LA Times not withstanding, an online pedophile ring was discovered and destroyed in the past months. Thanks to this bust, hundreds of children were saved and hundreds of adults from around the world were arrested. Not to mention the show Tosh.0 uncovering truly
disturbing youtube channels of videos of children doing what seem to be innocuous activities. These particularly boring looking videos have garnered millions of views. I refuse to give these channels any views, but I know from descriptions that the videos involved children being tied to beds, a young girl eating a whipped cream pie and two girls doing random day to day activities. I digress, the argument here is that sexualized children’s costumes are completely inappropriate. How can we argue that these costumes are too sexualized while every day we fight against sexist dress codes at school? Why can’t girls wear tank tops and shorts if it’s hot out? How are their shoulders and legs distracting, but boys’ aren’t? I’ve heard people say that if teachers find it inappropriate it’s because they’re the ones sexualizing these young girls and therefore they’re the problem. If that’s the case, then my point is proven. Why would costume creators make costumes that openly sexualize children? No 13 year old should be walking around in skin-tight mini skirts and low cut shirts. Yet, we make an exception on Halloween. This isn’t me trying to police what women wear, but, how can we possi-
bly be okay with serving little girls on a silver platter for these pedophiles? It feels counterintuitive to allow these costumes since, pedophiles aside, these kinds of costumes perpetuate the idea that objectifying girls is normal. A report from The Guardian revealed that girls as young as 11 will wax or shave their legs and bikini area or pad their bras out of pressure from the media to look a certain way. What’s more disheartening is that the pressure to look this way has lead to anxiety and body image issues in many young girls. If women don’t like being objectified, why would we let children be objectified? “I make my daughter’s costumes,” said Yesenia Garcia, a woman I met at the costume store, “I mean, look at these! I have a 19 year-old daughter that wears clothes less revealing than this. It’s ridiculous. My 12 year-old doesn’t need this. She needs to be a kid for as long as possible.” A couple of women nearby nod vehemently at this, murmuring similar comments. Their hope is that if people stop buying the costumes then maybe stores will stop selling them. One can only hope.

Animal, as if African Americans weren’t incarcerated five times more often than whites. Animal, as if the people locked away stopped being human or deserving of respect. Animal, as if minorities didn’t serve longer sentencs than their white counterparts for the same
crime. The lack of empathy is harder to understand than anything else. At the end of the day it’s the way we treat others that speaks loudest about our character. It isn’t about them against us or Republican vs Democrats, because as Taylor said, they’re both “stupid.” The faster both sides realize that we all want much of the same things the easier the government’s job will be. We need to fight against the knee jerk reaction of rejecting anything the other side brought up. We need to flip the senate in order to see real change happen. “Trump may be insane, but the 535 [house representatives and senate members] are worse,” said Taylor. If there’s something I can unironically agree with Taylor on is that it’s congress that can and should put a stop to this chaos.

Rio Hondo’s Lady Roadrunner volleyball team held its 2017 Breast Cancer Awareness Game against the Chaffey Panthers on Wednesday, October 11. The Rio Ladies came out playing with fire and passion and were able to defeat the Panthers in straight sets. Prior to the game, sophomore outside hitter Bree Newton gave the crowd a brief message regarding breast cancer awareness. “Tonight’s game is to support the fighters, admire the survivors, and honor the take,” Newton told the crowd before recognizing her mother Susan Lewis Newton, who has been battling cancer since 2005. Newton clearly played with a bit more tenacity in Wednesday’s match, and it might have been the spark the team needed. The first set between the Rio Ladies and Chaffey was close for the most part. Rio got off to a quick start, but neither team was able to distance themselves from the other. Rio led 17-15 before they went on a 8-3 streak, giving them the first set with a score 25-18. In sets two and three, the Lady Roadrunners seemed to easily outmatch the Chaffey Panthers. Rio quickly won the second set 25-18 and the third set 25-13, sweeping Chaffey 3-0. After the game, Bree Newton spoke to El Paisano a bit more about her mother, Susan. “She battled in 2005,
within two years she was cancer free,” Bree said. “It came back my senior year of high school, two years ago. Exactly two years this month, she’s been battling again ever since. It’s metastasize cancer, it’s stage four.” Bree was asked if her mother, Susan, gave her some extra motivation in the Breast Cancer Awareness Game. A smile had spread across her face as she gave her response. “Yes, definitely. Just knowing my mom is here the whole time cheering me on and having my family here... it was great.” Freshman middle blocker Andrea Sanchez also gave her thoughts about the Breast Cancer Awareness Game. “Knowing thousands suffer from the disease, including men, I became more appreciative of my health, Sanchez stated. “These patients endure large amounts of pain. Becoming aware of what these patients go through, it has motivated me to play my very best. I always remind myself that God has given me a healthy life. I appreciate being able to walk, see, and breathe on my own. Others don’t have these privileges and I learned to be grateful.” Sanchez went on and gave more words about how those who are suffering from breast cancer influence her. “...if these patients who are suffering from breast cancer can keep fighting through their treatments, I have a good reason to keep fighting for that victory. A quote I live by is ‘pain is temporary, glory is forever.’”
