Latin Heritage Day “You Should Be Thrown In Jail !” At Rio Hondo:

Latin Heritage day was celebrated at Rio Hondo Tuesday, October third at the lower quad. This event included nine clubs that were selling food and playing music related to Latin heritage. It offered an enjoyable atmosphere and allowed students to mingle with other individuals that share a similar culture as them. This event was implemented to create a safe environment for students with Latin heritage and let them know they are cared about. As said by Ashleigh Medina, Senator of Cultural Diversity and coordinator of the event, “Our goal for events like this is to create an environment on campus where students can see that we care about who they are.As a Chicana myself, representation and diversity is incredibly important to me. I want our campus to feel like a place where people can be themselves without judgment.” This event did not only include the selling of tamales,
churros, and flan, but also a showing of the Walkout at the Wray theatre. Walkout is a film based on a true story of the 1968 East Los Angeles walkouts. The showing included a panel with the producer of the film, Moctesuma Esparza. He answered questions and opened up an interesting conversation on being a Chicanx and the struggles in today’s political climate. Medina also stated on this topic that, “These kinds of conversations are important because especially under this administration, lots of us feel lost or hopeless and it’s important to let students on campus know that they aren’t alone and we’re all in this fight together. This kind of reassurance is something I hope to promote in all of my events in an effort to make our campus more united.”This event that took a month and a half to plan, was successful in including all Latin countries with their colorful flags around the quad and food that everyone can enjoy.
LA Zoo’s Suspicious Package

Early Saturday morning around 9:30 am, a suspicious package was found at the front entrance of the Los Angeles Zoo by security containing a live adult possum. With no room for error, the LAPD took matters into their own hands as the Zoo and surrounding parking lots were evacuated immediately. In the wake of last weeks mass shooting in Las Vegas, Authorities wanted to ensure the safety of all staff and patrons. A spokeswoman for the Zoo April Spurlock stated.
“LAPD made the decision to call in the bomb squad. The public and zoo staff was asked to move back a safe distance and relocate their cars to the zoo’s far north parking lot.” With a two hour delay, the bomb squad concluded around 11:30 am that the package contained a live adult possum and reopened its doors to the public. Though no one was harmed it has left many families on edge as a simple day at the zoo turned into a potential bomb threat. The LA Zoo will remain open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.

Political discourse reduced to boos and cheers, as Assemblyman Ian Calderon and State Attorney General Xavier Becerra spoke at Whittier College on October 5 to have a public forum on the current State of California. The meeting allowed citizens to write down their questions for the public servants on index cards to read and answer. With California announcing itself as a sanctuary state just hours before, the event drew a large group of citizens who were particularly focused on the developing policies and legislations concerning their respective state and country. The audience was split into two different groups: one that was docile and complacent, paralleled by another that was frustrated with the speakers and would sporadically interrupt them. The Opposition to Calderon and Becerra would periodically yell phrases such as: “Obey our laws,” “Work with ICE,”
“Work with our president,” “you should be thrown in Jail,” and “follow our laws.” While they were both trying to answer questions, the crowd of dissenters continued yelling, spurring a back and forth between the two groups, volume superseding anything that the public officials could say.’ “I think it’s really unpleasant that this is what political discourse has come to these days. We’re asking
questions but if you respect what we are doing, agree or disagree, you’ll allow the attorney general to answer the questions, but if you want to keep talking we’ll be moving on.” While questions were asked about having California work with ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement), the payment for Undocumented Immigrants’ legal needs and the State’s transformation into a sanctuary state remained a point of contention. All questions were either skipped for being “inappropriate,” or ignored because of their disruptive nature. Three-fourths of the engagement through, the group had already engaged in bickering about the pledge of allegiance. The Event ended earlier than expected, with repeated disruptions of controversial subject matter that caused both Calderon and Becerra to stop answering questions. The Public servants left quickly, leaving the people to their own devices, bickering vehemently all throughout Whittier College’s Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts.

We Voted Against UN Resolution Condeming Gay Death Penalty There were 27 in favor of condemning abuse of the death penalty, 13 who voted against and 7 abstentions that remained. Every single Western and Eastern European countries and Latin American countries voted in favor and the U.S sided with China, Saudi Arabia and Egypt which are countries that contain the most troubling human rights in record. Leaving Cuba as one of the countries to have abstained. It did not pass but is still being Ambassador Nikki Haley states “There was no vote by USUN that supported the death penalty for gay people. In the past week The United Nations announced a resolution for condemning the death penalty as punishment for gay relations. This made a historic mark for the LGBT society, yet shortly after the announcement The United States voted against the resolution.

of the LGBT community but their families, close friends and anyone who stands with them to know that the death penalty is punishment to those in different countries and is still in act because of gay relations. To live in fear is not a way to live at all how is one to be a peace when the world is not treating everyone equally due to religion and close minded people. In countries like Saudi Arabia stoning to death is a penalty in which married men and non Muslim engage in same sex conduct. In other countries where the death penalty does not qualify for homosexuality puts individuals at risk of harassment, arrest or even murder.

The annual Amber Rose Slut Walk event took place in Los Angeles October 1. Thousands of people no matter the sex, race, age, class or education came together to fight for sexual justice. The mission is to raise awareness towards gender equality and to STOP sexual violence, victim blaming and derogatory labels. Not only does it educate and empower women from different backgrounds but it also gives certain women who happen to be rape victims a platform to share their stories. The walk encourages women to stand up for themselves and advices them to speak to those around them who aren’t aware of sexual injustice. Amber Rose founder of The Slut Walk states “we need to start with our boys, we need to start with our sons, we need to
talk to our fathers and our uncles and really educate them that as women we shouldn’t have to teach other women how to be safe, we should feel safe in society were men don’t touch us…” Amber herself has been criticized because she was a former stripper but now the 33 year old is a beauty ambassador and has a net worth of 12 million. Aside everything she’s been through and the amount of hate she receives everyday she still manages to make time to help other women as much as she can with the foundation that she has created. The Slut Walk is an event where women can wear anything they want or NOTHING at all. It’s to prove a point that as women we shouldn’t have to be conservative or modest to be respected. “As a women who feels unsafe on the daily when I’m in downtown L.A, I was thrilled to be walking for

Thousands gathered in Uptown Whittier on October 8 for the annual Los Muertos Uptown Art & Music Festival. The event incorporated a tribute car show, Catrin and Catrina contest, Dozens of artist/vendors booths, Singer/band performances, Altar contests, face painters, food trucks and traditional ceremonies/ rituals. Although the actual Da De Los Muertos is on November first, Whittier’s Casita Del Pueblo presented this community event hosted by Lisa Love and Calipso. Yolanda Garcia, owner of Casita Del Pueblo, has been apart of the whittier community for many years.
Her continued efforts has introduced the community to latino culture and has brought ethnic pride ,as well as revitalizing interest to the latino culture. While many different events garner interest in the community, Casita’s event has supported an emotion of togetherness and pride in who you are. “The community needs cultural events to feel inspired and empowered to be great leaders and seek out opportunities that are better
for their families.” The event was a non-stop promotion of life and culture. While Los Muertos celebrations are held the expansive block of uptown Whittier is valued as something culturally significant to the com-

Due to a vulnerability in government websites, it has been found that hackers altered votes in 35 states and the District of Columbia. According to a Harvard study from author Latanya Sweeney, professor of government and technologies, the lack of security in the government websites allows hackers to change a voter’s personal info which includes name, address, party affiliation, and gender. While this might not seem problematic since voters
are able to change this information themselves, changing something as small as an address could result in voters being assigned to a different precinct. A change in party affiliation could result in an inability to vote. Overall, if a voter’s information does not match the government’s records they will be unable to vote. Through two databases that can be purchased for $1002, hackers can infiltrate government websites to obtain voter’s personal information. That’s right, your personal information can be purchased. Author Sweeney stated,
“they might very well want to target a particular community at large”. This could mean eliminating votes from a certain community that will vote a certain way. For example, to eliminate mostly democrat votes which are primarily cast by the working-class American, hackers could alter their information for the voter turnout to be predominantly republican. This concern was real in Riverside County in the primary election of June 2016. Here, hackers switched voters party affiliations through the use of their Social Security and driver’s license numbers. At the time the hacker was
unable to be identified. Federal Investigators discovered months later that Russian hackers targeted elections in about 21 states by altering voter information. This cyberattack occurred last year and Federal investigators are well-aware of the Russian hackers’ tactics, yet the study released expresses a rather recent fear of hacker’s increasingly unchecked abilities. The Harvard study explained voters’ only hope as being an increased governmental regulation to strengthen website security.

UNSW Sydney scientists have finally discovered the purpose of a mysterious 3700 Babylonian clay tablet after thousands of years. The Babylonian tablet is the oldest and most accurate trigonometric table in the world. The Babylonian tablet also known as the Plimpton 322 was discovered in the early 1900s in Southern Iraq by Edgar Banks. It was proven that the Babylonians developed trigonometry 1,500 years before the Greeks. The Plimpton 322 was first discovered by Edgar Banks who was the first to inspire the character of Indiana Jones. The Plimpton 322 originally came from the Ancient Sumerian city of Larsa and is now located in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University in New York. The famous tablet was mainly used by ancient mathematical scribes to calculate how to construct temples, palaces and build canals. The new information provided proves that Babylonians were the first to study trigonometry and research reveals an ancient mathematical sophistication that had been hidden until now. The Babylonian tablet consists of four columns and fifteen rows of numbers written on it by the Sumerians. Dr. Daniel Mansfield from the UNSW School of Mathematics and Statistics revealed that

the tablet contains a special pattern of numbers called Pythagorean triples. The name is derived from Pythagoras’ theorem of right-angled triangles. He stated that the “Plimpton 322 was a powerful tool that could have been used for surveying fields or making architectural calculations to build step pyramids.” The Plimpton 322 also reveals that the famous Pythagorean
theorem was proved by the Babylonians before the Greek mathematician Pythagoras. As UNSW scientist complete their research they presented that they originally had 6 columns, but was meant to be completed with 38 rows. UNSW Professor Norman Wildberger stated the potential of the Babylonian tablet as “it opens up new possibilities not just for modern
mathematics research, but also for mathematics education. With Plimpton 322 we see a simpler, more accurate trigonometry that has clear advantages over our own.” The 3700 Babylonian tablet has demonstrated fascinating mathematical work. The tablet is the most accurate trigonometric table as it allows someone to determine two unknown ratios of

September 28, 2017, British automobile manufacturer Aston Martin raised eyebrows when it unveiled its new collaborative venture dubbed “Project Neptune” just last week. The project revolves around the creation of a luxury submarine with veteran submersible company Triton Submarines. The announcement was originally thought to only be a concept by fans and car enthusiasts alike, but all signs now point to production. The ambitious project is being billed by Aston Martin as “an ultra- exclusive, strictly limited Submersible that will redefine luxury and performance for a select few.” While the majority of the product design remains under wraps, the submersible is inspired by Aston Martin’s

The project is perhaps the first endeavor of it’s kind to devise a high-end luxury submarine that seats three. Marek Reichman, VP & Chief Creative Officer at Aston Martin describes the joint venture as the two manufacturer’s affinity for “design,, engineering,, and beauty.” Patrick Lahey, president at Triton Submarines had similar words as he spoke about his collaborator in a statement available to the press as having an unmatched “passion for technology, engineering,, and timeless, elegant design.” Shrouded in secrecy, the Submarine remains top secret as an official unveiling is noticeably absent from the roster of approaching design showcases. As both sides appear excited about the ambitious endeavor, the public eagerly awaits a glimpse of the end result.

Neuropsychologist of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, a university in Germany conducted a study on if gaming really helps learn. The answer they got shouldn’t really come as a surprise to anyone. People who play video games regularly (15 hours weekly) scored better than those who don’t. The test included 17 people who played regularly and another 17 who don’t play much at all. The test included weather prediction task which was an example of learning probabilities. Each participant had three different cards, and had to predict if it was either sun or rain with immediate feedback. They also had every participant answer some questions about the cards as well. The result of the gamers were a lot better than those, who didn’t play video games. They performed better with the uncertainty combination of cards. Scoring 60% on rain and 40% on sunshine. On top
of that the gamers had more knowledge on the different kinds of combinations. This type of learning is highly associated with activity in the hippocampus. The part of your brain that plays a key role in memorizing things. Many experts are predicting that this can help people who struggle in memorizing important things. This isn’t a study that is new to anyone at all. This is a study that has been going on for as long as video games have been a thing. For ple the University of Rochester did a study back in 2014 on how, playing action video games boost learning. They used people who play action video games such as Call of Duty. And for those who don’t play video games made them play non action games such as The Sims. They pinned the people who played video games against the ones who don’t in a test. They gave them perceptual task, to build and fine tune template. The test last for about a year and again to

When playing intense games such as PUBG, Battlefield 1, Call of Duty, etc. because it puts you in a war like situation without having to be in any danger at all. Constantly avoiding bullets flying your way, cars running you over, or even falling buildings. Even with exam games not as intense such as TellTale games forcing you to choose certain dialog in a short amount of time. All sorts of games force you to make decisions as quickly as possible.

In a galaxy not as far away with a planet closer than we’d think, water has been found, on our favorite red planet Mars. Scientists decided to take a look at old
data from a NASA spacecraft orbiting Mars, and found what appears to be ice near the equator. The discovery came as a shock to everyone. Mainly because everyone thought Mars to be a dry planet. But it was predicted that one day it could contain life, it seems that Mars just keeps throwing surprises at us. The water was found in the region called Medusae Fossae, that lays deep within the planet. They had later discovered that the rest of the equator remained low in water. But there were two parts that did have high concentration that was up to 40 percent in weight. Perhaps the most shocking part of this is, the equator was believed to be too warm to hold any ice at all, without it being melted. Just like Rocky, it managed to surprise everyone and beat the odds. No one really knows how long this ice has been there. Ssome scientists predict thousands, some say millions. Even though we don’t know how long the ice has been there, that

how I feel about this show. It’s a mix between exciting and scary. X-Men has been a really divisive and interesting comic book property; compared to other comic movie
these characters. I do feel like I’m projecting a bit, placing the affection I have on these comic book characters onto their television adaptations. The draw of the show is that
franchises where you have either an overwhelmingly positive response or good divide amongst show-watchers. With X-Men though, it often ranges, while some of the movies and shows are absolutely beloved others are despised as though they are a complete insult to the very idea of the X-Men narrative. The last X-Men show on tv, Legion, was acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, and with this show, it seems as though the producers had hoped to recreate the same success. While Legion was revolved around one character (Professor Xavier’s son), Gifted is about a few select characters in the world on a wider scope that will hopefully garner the show some attention as an action-filled drama. Gifted is about two young mutants Andy and Lauren Strucker (Natalie Alyn Lind and Percy Hynes White) whose mutant powers are discovered causing them to go on the run from a government that’s persecuting them. The other characters consist of their mother and father, as well as four other mutants on the run: Emma Dumont as Polaris, Blair Redford as Thunderbird, Jamie Chung as Blink and Sean Teale as Eclipse. Although there are numerous comic book references, you really don’t have to know anything about comics or the movies, to enjoy this show. I’m already invested in
these mutants are on their own; there’s no X-men or Brotherhood to protect them. The show has a gritty atmosphere, with any vibrancy coming from the mutants’ abilities and special effects. In other works, depicting the X-Men in such a gritty, dark way with lots of muted colors has worked against them, here it does not. Because it’s very dramatic and because they are on the run, the dark lighting and sets compliment the story, rather than mute the impact. The special effects and locations were a bit mundane if interesting. There’s a trap character is stuck in, that reminded me a of cheap and fun set piece from X2. I’m really curious about how many set changes they are going to have. There are a few places that are clearly going to be constants, but I hope that they take these characters to interesting places. The acting was surprisingly great from all main actors. Many of the actors who have definitely been typecast are able to to convey a hint of distinct personality. Hopefully, they can all build on this, rather than just staying in the standard characters they’re framed as e.g. “protectful mom” or “tough loner”. This show is very promising and I’m concerned whether or not it can keep my interest. Hopefully this show is enjoyable to audiences everywhere.

Welcome back to the city of Storybrooke, Virginia. We last left our heroes defeating the black fairy during Emma’s final battle. Before the ending of the Sixth season, the actors for the main protagonists announced they would not be returning for the next chapter of the series. Many fans were shocked to find out the news but it won’t stop them from continuing to see the show they grew to love. With only three original characters (Captain Hook, The Evil Queen, and Rumplestiltskin) returning, the show is going to be somewhat of a reboot of the show. As a new book opens we’re introduced to a new cast, Andrew J.West (an older Henry Mills), Dania Ramirez (Cinderella), Gabrielle Anwar (Lady Tremaine), Alison Fernandez (Lucy) and Mekia Cox (Princess Tiana). When the show began in 2011 a child, by the name of Henry Mills, began his search for
his biological mother to help her realize who she truly is. The last scene of season six showed a young girl looking for a man, she finds him and asks him if his name is Henry Mills. He replies “Yes” and she identifies herself as his daughter. Those who watched the show from the very beginning may sense a bit of deja vu. Fans while upset were more confused when they found out the Cinderella, we all knew and loved, would be replaced by another actress. The audience later finds out the reason why this happened was that author, a key character in the series, at the start of season seven found different versions of beloved fairytale characters from all over the world, which explains why we are just meeting this version of Cinderella. She’s not your typical princess that goes to the ball and fall in love with the prince. Once Upon A Time is well-known to give classic fairytales a twist, which makes for an interesting and refreshing plot.
The season started off with a bang and makes a smooth transition between old and new, also updating with Hyperion Heights as a new version of the once beloved Storybrooke. A new curse has taken over all but there is still hope as Lucy, the child of Henry Mills and Cinderella does whatever humanly possible to bring back her once beloved life. She is immune to the curse as she is the product of true love, which is, of course, the most powerful magic of all. While there is skepticism about how the show will play out with a completely different cast, the chemistry between the two protagonists makes it believable that there is such a thing as love at first sight. To the newcomers it’s recommended you begin watching it from the very beginning. This is a show that will tug your heartstrings, makes you forget about the hardships in life and make you believe in fairytales. It’s time to release your inner child and enjoy.

Ghost Wars Review

Ghost Wars premiered on the SYFY channel October 5 and it’s decent, for the most part. The show centers around town outcast Roman Mercer, played by Avan Jogia, who attempts to leave a remote Alaskan town for a new start where he doesn’t stand out for his unusual gifts. Unfortunately, for him, an accident happens which forces him to stay and face the supernatural happenings in the town. The setup of the show isn’t anything new. The trope of the outcast with supernatural abilities who needs to save his town from some from a catastrophic disaster has been seen many times before. Most notably in both Paranorman and Ghost Whisperer, they follow similar patterns. However, the show does attempt to execute it in a semi-different way with the whole town being aware of not only Roman’s gifts but also of a curse that has something to do with his mother. plot, the show suffers from a lack of consistency in atmosphere. Sometimes the feeling is dramatic and intense, while other times it’s dry and boring. Hopefully, the rest of the series has a consistent atmosphere otherwise it’s going to fall flat. Speaking of flat, the acting in the show is bland, though it’s difficult to tell if that’s a fault in the writing or in the acting. While Jogia works
well with his character and what’s written the other actors, primarily Father Dan Carpenter played by Vincent D’Onofrio, feel off. The visuals of the show vary. amera work is a stylistic choice that works for the more dramatic parts of the show. Overall, it’s neat and there are no unnecessary shaky camera sequences, etc. which often plague many other supernatural and hor-

ror shows. As for the special effects, they’re nothing special. It’s not a horrible mess, but these aren’t the top-tier effects that would come to be expected of a show with such a small budget. For what it’s worth, it looks fine and only dips into looking absurd a couple of times. This show isn’t the best of the mystery and drama shows, it’s filled with poorly executed plot points and
an inconsistent atmosphere that sometimes causes it to fall flat. While the show does attempt to do something new and has an interesting plot, it’s not fantastic. If you’re looking for a show with a well-written and interesting plot, then steer clear of this one. If you’re just looking for some decent entertainment, then check it out and see if it’s your jam.

As part of his “Be Encouraged” tour, Chance the Rapper performed October 3 at the Hollywood Bowl as night one of his LA show, he also performed the following night. The event was sold out with over 17,000 fans packed into the outdoor venue. Fans purchased merchandise and the chilly Los Angeles night spurred fans to buy hoodies along with Chance’s notorious 3 hats. The venue had various places to grab food, from a market with wrapped sandwiches to a kitchen with Margherita pizza and BBQ brisket sandwiches. The crowd was able to grab and grub in their seats while waiting for the show to begin. Francis and the Lights opened the show with a single stage presence where he performed some of his songs like See Her Out and May I have this Dance, with Chance joining in to do a surprise dance. After Francis and the Lights finished, DJ Oreo pumped up the crowd by mixing songs from multiple artists, from Kendrick Lamar to Kanye. Oreo made the wait for Chance enjoyable for the majority of the crowd

Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment joined the rapper and performed songs from Chance’s albums Coloring Book, Acid Rap and Surf. Chance also performed his new song First World Problems that features artist Daniel Caesar, but he did not make an appearance. For his song Summer Friends, Chance brought out
opener Francis and the Lights who is featured in the song. Towards the end of the song, the artists did their routine dance from the opener’s song May I Have this Dance. Chance finished his show with his songs Finish Line/ Down and mixed it with his other song Blessings. Confetti blasted from the middle of the venue and fireworks came from the side and middle of the stage. The rapper ended by thanking God and the more than 17,000 fans for his first sold-out LA show of his tour.

Starting October 1st, the LA Zoo will be showcasing their crawling, slithering, and nocturnal friends with many new Halloween attractions for the public to enjoy. Throughout the month, you will be able to experience the Ghoulish Groove, Animals & Boo, and you can also stop by The Lair. The Ghoulish Grove is the Zoo’s spooky new way of educating you on nocturnal animals as you walk through the mysterious maze finding many great photo opportunities along the way, this
exhibit is open everyday from 10am to 4pm. Along with the Ghoulish Grove, the Zoo also offers daily their new interactive exhibit, Animals & Boo. Here you can get so close to creatures like spiders, snakes, and lizards, that you can touch them! If you’re brave enough you can experience this at 10:45am, 11:45am, and 12:45 pm on weekends. In the spirit of the season, the zoo also pushes everyone to take a look at their slithering scaly friends hidden away in The Lair where you can come face
to face with some of the most fearsome snakes, venomous lizards, and poisonous frogs. On the weekends is when the frightful fun steps it up a notch. During the weekend, guests get the opportunity to watch the zoo’s fun new puppet show, Monster Menagerie. During the show the audience will get to learn more about the specific animals that the zoo has along with the chance to build a monster of their own creation! Along with this the Zoo offers some new fearsome feedings for their carnivores and a Chomp
and Stomp for the herbivores. The chomp and stomp is great for those who love to watch animals like giraffes, elephants, and even bears toss around a pumpkin. For those thrill seekers, the Zoo shows one type of carnivore every weekend of October eating a whole carcass. These fearsome feedings aren’t for the light at heart so beware! To top off all the Halloween festivities the LA Zoo ends the month with an exciting weekend of trick or treating on the 28th and the 29th of the month! Enjoy the

When culture is a priority to someone there is no way to hide it. Ofelia Esparza, native artist to East Los Angeles, lives her culture with a passion that blooms like cempazuchitl in October. Esparza still lives in the same house she grew up in. The 85 year-old has gained international recognition for her altar building, a talent she learned from her mother. “She would make four altars throughout the year,” Esparza says about her mother, “A nativity scene altar, an altar for [Holy Saturday], an altar for Día de los Muertos and one she kept year round for the Virgin Mary. It turned into a community thing, everyone would gather with food at the cemetery, sit around the tombstones and the stories would begin.” Esparza learned the craft well. So well, in fact, that she gets commissioned to make altars for Día de los Muertos. “It’s not a business, I go to where I’m invited. Altars are very unique, no two are alike.
They’re not this commercial thing that [Día de los Muertos] is becoming. It’s a bridge.” A bridge that Esparza explains connects generations and culture. It was through altar building with her mother that she learned about her ancestors. Her mother would talk about long dead family members while creating the altars that were always humble, “They weren’t always these elaborate things until later.” Esparza recently came back from Chicago where she made an altar in memory of those killed protecting the environment. the earth. A young man from Honduras, a scientist, was kidnapped and killed because he was protecting baby sea turtles from poachers.” Altars, especially altars for Día de los Muertos, are steeped in culture, with roots buried deep in indigenous tradition. “It’s something to be proud of. My brother told me once, after some boys had made me cry when they teased me about my skin color, ‘Don’t cry. Why are you crying? Don’t you know that through our veins runs the blood of kings?’ He was very proud of our roots, my
mother was as well. She didn’t even want to become a U.S. citizen because it felt like betrayal to her,” said Esparza. Today’s political climate makes it difficult to focus on anything that isn’t in the news, especially when one’s own community is under fire. But culture is vital for survival, a sentiment that Esparza agreed with. “Culture is everything, it’s identity, you have to fight to be who you are,” said Esparza. It’s something the 85 year-old fights for every day. It’s the passion in her veins along with the blood of kings that gives life to everything that she does. You can enjoy more about Esparza’s lecture on altar building in the Wray Theater on October 10 at 7pm. Anyone interested in actively helping is more than welcome to join Esparza on October 12 in the Wray Theater lobby where she’ll be building an altar from 10 am until 5 pm.

Before I get started on why this is the greatest Captain America, you should go read Secret Empire yourself it’s a fantastic story. The idea behind him is just awesome as is, but what if Captain America was a bad guy? The story by itself is great. Turning one of the most trustworthy and beloved heroes into a villain. It’s kinda like the whole Injustice World, without people dying left and right. Rodgers was able to conquer so much in a short amount of time and force so many heroes into hiding. Nick Spencer, the writer for Secret Empire did a great job on doing a complete 180 on Rodgers. They rewrote him in a way that was so great, it didn’t bug me at all. Matter of fact it made me love him even more. The way I describe him can’t do him justice, it’s one of those books you have to read and check it out for yourselves For starters his rise to power is so sneaky, it’s unbelievable. He single-handedly takes over SHIELD and makes it Hydra. When he comes to power he was voted by the people of America to lead them. He didn’t kill anyone or force civilians to vote for them, they all did it on their own free will and loved him for it. He brought peace to America. As well as making heroes who didn’t want to turn Hydra peacefully into enemies of the state. Not only was he backed by the people, but he didn’t cause damage to the streets of America, unlike Tony Stark. Stark and his band of rebels caused mayhem throughout America, with little to no worries about what they were doing. He even went as far as setting off a nuclear explosion to make sure he killed as many Hydra agents as he possibly could when needed. Steve Rogers strived to unite America and to help make the country achieve more than they could possibly imagine. Working peacefully with other nations that wished to do so and if they chose not to he would deal with it quickly and swift. Going as far as taking on Black Panther head on in the kingdom of Wakanda which is unheard of. You have to be a madman to even do that, but he did and most importantly he got him to bend the knee. Forcing Black Panther to go into Hydra custody. All the threats that

Hydra Captain America: The Secret Empire Story he had, he dealt with and made sure they wouldn’t turn against him. The biggest threats such as Captain Marvel, The Guardians, etc, locking them out of earth with their very own technology! Not to mention getting an endless wave of alien hordes to attack them non-stop. Going door to door hunting down any Inhumans he deemed a threat to Hydras America. He even picked up Mjölnir, the hammer of Thor! Making an example of certain X-Men who stood against him using the hammer. He was still worthy to wield this iconic hammer after announcing he was Hydra, that alone should say something. Not to mention having the entire city of New York blocked off from the rest of the world using black magic. Which held many of Marvels bigger heroes at the time. He was able to take over so much based on his ideology and actions. Making the Avengers and all the other beloved team’s question themselves. Up until now many of these heroes thought they could never be beaten, but the Cap changed all of that. Locking up more than half of the heroes, or crushing those who thought to rebel against him. Leaving hardly any to question and stand up against him. Hydra Steve Rogers is a force to reckoned with. He had a plan to take over and did it, only failing due to little mistakes. Even after his downfall, he didn’t fail. Making Hydra more desperate than ever and recruiting so many new members. He inspired so many but now they hide and are waiting for the right moment to strike again to rise to power. He showed America a new way of life, and lots of people are more desperate than ever to get that way of life back.

The ends do not always justify the means. It’s the existential quandary of; are the implications of the journey really worth the ending result. In comic books, a medium constantly adjusting to cultural and economic pressures, writers work hard to develop stories that are not only memorable, but have real impact and meaning to their audience and the cultural zeitgeist as a whole. For those who are unaware of the story, in Marvel Comic event Secret Empire, a reality altering object made it so that Steve Rogers Captain America had always been a spy for the villain organization Hydra. After repelling an alien invasion, Cap has divided the superhero community (either captured, controlled or expelled) and placed America under full Hydra control. The 10, 11 if you want to count ‘issue #0’, story run is packed full of so many details it would take awhile to discuss it all. But basically, in the last issue, the memory of the old Steve Rodgers(non-Hydra) is given corporeal form and fights and beats the Hydra Cap. Many, not all, is put back to normal and the evil Steve in put in jail while the Good Steve goes into hiding, ashamed of what was done by his counterpart. The story overall has a lot of great and interesting character moments and has parts that are genuinely good. But as stated earlier before, the few great details that came out of the story does not outweigh the problems with it. In an interview with the writer Nick Spencer, he
stated that, “while their both very evil , and villainous, they’ll happily partner with nazis or anyone else if it helps them reach their end goals” What the writer tries to do is present that the ideals of natzism thats asociated with Hyrda, were all from a former leader of the organization Red Skull. And when Captain America took over the organization, he had the red skull killed in order

Colluding with an organization doesn’t necessarily mean that you agree with their virtues, but it sure as hell means that you are not only ok with their stances but that approve of them. Here are several of the actions Hydra took while in control of America: they put any and all Inhumans in concentration camps, had personal assassins and public broadcasted executions, and instituted fastest laws. When you have a character, partly created by someone of jewish descent, that is constructed to be the epitome of the American spirit of freedom, you really have to think about writing him as the roll of a dictator. In the IGN interview Spencer went on about how, as a writer, you look at a character and write them as a person first and what they stand for(symbol) second. I really dislike how he separates the two aspects, because who you are and what you symbolically stand for are intertwined and they go hand in hand when writing. While he admits that one affects the other, he still treated on higher than the other which is what i think, is a mistake. “One leads and the other follows. You definitely can’t put a character in a glass case and say, ‘oh i can never do this, this or this to a character… when that happens either you really start to see the story stagnate...”. The entire event is a representation of the model mainstream comics are being based upon. It’s favoring and supporting short term profits and ideas, rather than the characters themselves and the respect for them, as well as the readers. Now my opinions are just that. If this article entered you at all, please go read the comics yourself or find the bootleg versions of them on youtube so that you can make up your own mind. And don’t forget to punch your local nazi kids ! (local is sadly aept.)

“I think so. When the right to bear arms was taking place in the 1700s, it was necessary back then because you were fighting to be independent. So now, we’re past the time I think, we’re overdue. I wouldn’t necessarily take them all away, but make it harder for people to actually get their hands on guns. It’s just so easy for anyone out there to be like- you know what?
