A gunman opened fire killing 58 people and injuring over 500 in the Route 91 Harvest Festival Sunday night, October 1st, from the high floors of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. A video posted on social media shows country singer Jason Aldean performing at 10:08 p.m. on the main stage of the Route 91 Harvest Festival where he is interrupted by the sound of automatic gunfire. The music stops as multiple victims fall to the ground and a thousand others began to scatter, screaming and ducking for cover. The gunman was identified as 64-year-old Stephen Craig Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada. Paddock positioned
himself on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino which had been right across the street from the venue of the festival firing down at over a thousand feet at the crowd of about 22,000 people. The shooting went on for about 10-15 minutes with the occasional pause providing attendees an opportunity to rise off the ground and run out of the venue. Gail Davis, who was at attendance at the festival says, “Everyone was running. You could see people getting shot. I’ve never been that scared in my life.” The Las Vegas police were gathering as many people as possible at a time leading them to safety. Shortly before midnight the SWAT team finds their way into the Mandalay Bay Resort to find Paddock dead, with ten other rifles, in his hotel room. One of those ten rifles had been altered into an automatic

making it his main weapon. Las Vegas police believes he shot himself minutes before their entry. Police got in contact with Paddock’s brother, Eric Paddock who lives in Orlando Florida, in hopes of an explanation for his motives. Eric Paddock tells the Orlando Sentinel “we are completely dumbfounded” he says, “we
can’t understand what happened let alone where he got those automatic weapons.” President Trump made a statement Monday morning addressing the mass shooting saying “I want to thank the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and all of the first responders for their courageous efforts and for helping to save the lives

Gun Control in the U.S. has taken a back seat on the political agenda. Frankly, the last time we had headlines about gun control was when the San Bernardino shooting occurred. Before this goes to print, the current death toll from the las Vegas massacre that took place Sunday night stands at 58. With over 500 injured the question remains, how did 64 year old Steven P get 10 rifles and thousands of loads into the 32nd floor of the Mandalay hotel and casino that’s also home to the Four Seasons? Hillary Clinton has taken to Twitter where her team unveiled that the NRA spent 36 million dollars over the course of the Trump administrations political campaigning. With the Republicans controlling the Senate, it’s very unlikely that the NRA will budge. When they have in the past. The Democrats were able to make changes stemming from 20 people died at Sandy Hook in a predominately white neighborhood. Those changes only brought about some paperwork rules and nothing really on fighting crime. Speaking amongst the rio hondo students, students were shocked and many of them had loved ones at the event. The NRA responded
to Clinton, saying silencers would still be as loud as jackhammers. Holding their stance of always being armed, even with words, the spokeswoman missed the message of last years Democratic Presidential nominee by a long shot. Now is the time to start taking heavier precautions in regards to issuing and maintaining licenses There’s two sides to gun control: one being holding the second amendment to its fullest and the other being keeping firearms out of potentially dangerous criminals. Anyone with a minimal criminal record is eligible to purchase a firearm here in California at age 18, with only certain crimes prohibiting the sale of firearms for said criminal. Because Americans only want gun reform during mass shootings that are spread apart in time, interest for any real change quickly goes away along with the lives of the victims. We have plenty of bans and laws to keep certain races out of our country, but where is the help for the next white male looking to repeat Columbine, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, The Colorado Movie Massacre or Las Vegas? What are we waiting for and what can we do? For starters, you can raise awareness with family and friends through social media and you can contact local law makers.

Two videos of a police officer shooting a man repeatedly, outside of a 7-11 at Huntington Beach, goes viral on social media. The first video that hit the Twitter sphere shows a police officer wresting an unidentified man on the ground then finds his way up and shoots the suspect four times until he hit the ground. The second video that was leaked was a minute longer than the first and is taken from a witness sitting inside of their car. This video shows the police officer pointing his taser towards the suspect and as he is taking steps back the
suspect is marching towards him. The cop then shoots the taser and the suspect strikes at the officer. The officer was able to bring him to the ground but the suspect then pulls an object out of the cop’s belt. The officer immediately finds his way up off the ground, draws his gun and as the suspect stands he shoots him four times until he hit the ground. Being that a handful of cops have had a few incidents with the innocent, responders to the first video on social media were not too happy with what they saw. People were saying he should have just tased or pepper sprayed him to tame him, not shoot. However, once the second
video was released, several people who were upset at the first were able to understand the situation and the officer. Because of the reputation that police officers have been obtaining, it was not hard to believe that the officer shot the man without a warning. It is fair to understand that the police officer did this out of self defense but his reason for being at the scene in the first place has yet to be answered. The suspect died at the hospital later that day and the chief of police at Huntington Beach is defending his team. The police officer and the suspect will remain unidentified and until further questioning, this shooting had been provoked.

September 21, 2017, Rio Hondo’s very own Executive Dean of Counseling and Student Equity, Dr. Mike Muñoz was named as a Hispanic Leader in Volume thirty four, number seventeen’s Diverse Issues in Higher Education Magazine.The prestigious award was made based on Dr. Muñoz’s stellar performance as the current executive dean of counseling and student equity at Rio Hondo, while simultaneously being a parttime Professor at the University Of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education. The coveted list is compiled of fourteen candidates who Diverse Magazine believes are demonstrating excellence as educators in their respective fields by “focusing on matters of access and opportunity for all in higher education.” Where there be distinguished credentials and stoic ambitions, too, will there be a Dr. Muñoz calling the shots as a tried and true leader in the California system of community colleges. The Diversity profile offers a glimpse into the the future of his endeavors. As a campus steward first, and designat-
ed professional second, the magazine chronicles his experiences across the different school environments where he gained experience from and humble beginning on his reputable standing as a Hispanic leader. On his current agenda- inspire Latino participation at the highest level of mathematics available at Rio Hondo, so that there is no field in which there is a deficit of diversity. In his very own words to the magazine, “Equity is not about who we serve, it’s about how we serve them.” His advocation for the betterment of Hispanic education is the first step in a series of many to cultivate the next crop of community leaders like himself. No stranger to schooling himself, Dr. Munoz’s LinkedIn profile demonstrates elite institutional proficiency across a span of five different college campuses and within the Santa Ana Unified School District. His responsibility for the implementation of services that advocate for equality of treatment and impartiality are renowned as steadfast resolutions to improve the education of Hispanics all across the board. He is also responsible for a bevy of Student Success and Equity implementations, the most recent of which goes by the name of Starfish. Communication is the foundation Dr. Muñoz has chosen with which to establish his voice as a Hispanic Leader in higher education. Not content to a definition of the world by statistics, Diverse Magazine’s recognition of faculty that make a difference in their respective educational communities is a major nod of approval and source of distinction for minority leaders who have gone above and beyond expectations.

Rio Hondo’s Speech and Debate team officially kicked off the competition season on Septemeber 30th and Octorber first, at the PSCFA WarmUp tournament hosted by El Camino College. The two-day competition was filled with old contenders our team has clashed against looking to limber up for the upcoming bigger competi-
tions and fresh faces wanting to get a feel of the experience that is the speech and debate world. Rio Hondo showed up especially strong and ready with a squad of returning members accompanied with their new teammates for the new season. Pressures were high for the new members as this was their first official competition and first time using their learned practices to the test as they were exposed to the
many topics. Rio Hondo’s novices however, powered through those pressures and brought home three certificates of excellence. Ultimately, this competition was a great bonding experience between the old and the new members to connect as a whole and foreshadowed what our team will be up against as they aim to dominate the future competitions to come.

Uptown Food Festival: Strengthening Friendship and Community NOAH GARCIA News Editor noah.garcia3720@my.riohondo.edu
The first Eat Uptown Food Festival brought the Whittier community together to eat, enjoy drinks and socialize in Whittier’s’ Nixon Plaza on September 30th. Guests got the opportunity to sample foods from over 25 local uptown restaurants, and enjoy a beer garden. The event brought the Mayor, local business owners, everyday citizens and board members together to share and appreciate the food and drink of Uptown Whittier. Eat Uptown was put together by the Uptown Whittier Association(WUA) as a means to feature what Uptown Whittier has to offer. “...it brings all the community…to one location and try every single restaurant that’s in Uptown. I think this is an important event that should be annually because it lets the restaurant owners and the business owners [know] that we are here to support them as a community, down to the city council, the Whittier Uptown Association, but I think it brings everybody together,” said Frank Medina, Board of Director of the WUA, and one of the many city officials present at the event. The food offered was comprised of very small entrees, which worked well because after sampling almost everything one could easily be full. What the event gave to people was the opportuni-
ty for those who were always interested in the restaurants in uptown to taste almost all of them. Notable favorites such as fish, burgers and pretzels were brilliantly crafted by restaurants like Aunties Bakery, Sage Restaurant and Lounge, and The Rusty Monk. The lack of formality made this event memorable and because of its laxed atmosphere it felt like one huge family reunion. Guests arrived and had to opportunity socialize with one another while enjoying the festivities. At the end, everyone knew at least one other person there. It was a reminder of how close people are to each other, and how the city itself is sustained by these tight bonds of family and friends. The festival was developed through the combined efforts of the Whittier Uptown Association, Uptown Restaurant Collective and the organizers of the similar event Taps and Tapas. Rick Gonzalez, the owner of the Spin Lounge and former president, was credited with the idea of the event. The event is a result of trying to have a more inclusive community activity that’s similar to Taps and Tapas, which was mainly focusing on craft beers rather than actual food. With events like this being created by the people of Whittier for the people of Whittier, the city will continue to develop into a stronger, tightly knitted, welcoming community.

Binge Drinking Alcohol in College Affects Jobs Afterwards

A recent research shows that people who binge drink heavily in college have a lower percentage on finding a job after college. This research was conducted with 827 students who graduated from Cornell University, the University of Washington, the University of Florida, and the University of Michigan in 2014, 2015, and 2016. This data is the first of a five-year study on how binge drinking affects the transition from college to the workforce. Partying and drinking is seen as a college expectation for some students, but how much drinking is acceptable that it won’t affect future career opportunities? According to Professor Peter Bamberger of TAU’s Coller School of Business Management and Cornell University, “A student who binge-drinks four times a month has a 6 percent lower probability of finding a job than a student who does not engage in similar drinking habits. Those students who drank heavily six times a month increased their unemployment probability to 10 percent.” Some students, however, don’t believe binge drinking is a significant issue. Hondo, stated, “College is all about parties and drinking. People binge drink at parties and stuff, but that doesn’t mean they won’t find jobs necessarily. Once you finish college people still become
lawyers, doctors, teachers, ect...” These recent studies do show that there is a percentage of students affected. However, there is still not sufficient information on

this and because of that the National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse has funded a $2.2 million grant for research on binge drinking for the next five years. More than 16,000 students
have been contacted to be part this. This allows the research to be more in depth with the results and see how much it really affects the students.

Twitters Doubles its Character Limit to 280

Twitter has become the defining socio-political entity that reaches all across the
world to millions of people. And because of that, the company has decided to expand its its post character limit from 140 to 280. A blog post released on September 26th by Aliza Rosen (Product Manager, Twitter) and Ikuhiro Ihara(Senior Software Engineer), went into further detail on the changes. “languages like Japanese, Korean, and Chinese you can convey about double the amount of information in one character as you can in many other languages, like English, Spanish, Portuguese, or French.” The change is not only to give Twitter users a more flexible platform to work with, but is also an attempt at gaining and keeping more
users of the app. An article published by the site in February by techcrunch.com went into further detail about the declining revenue that advertisements are having on the platform, as well as discussing the statement released by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. “Revenue growth will continue to lag audience growth in 2017 and could now be further impacted by escalating competition for digital ad spending and the re-evaluation of our revenue product feature portfolio...:” Since the decline of the advertisements earning capabilities, the company has explored multiple techniques to diversify the functionality of their apps. Which is a
reason why live stream had become such a prominent feature, especially during the presidential election, sports games, concerts and cultural events. It’s very likely that expansion of the character limit is another way for the company to gain and keep more users. The test is only expected to last a couple weeks, taking a small group of Twitter users on iOS, Android and desktop web. Depending on the information they get, the extended word count may soon be put into effect for the rest of their users. With a word count of 280, hopefully Twitter users will make each word count.

Sixth Mass Wave of Extinction Approaching
California offers no safe haven from this extinction as the states bees and El Segnudo Blue Butterfly populations have dereased dramatically.

Waves of extinction have been hitting the world for centuries. It began with End-Ordovician 443 million years ago, then with Late Devonian 360 million years ago, Permian-Triassic 250 million years ago, Triassic-Jurassic 200 million years ago, and finally Cretaceous-Tertiary 65 million years ago. Scientists believe the sixth mass wave of extinction has slowly been coming our way and when it finally hits, it will be severe. According to the Guardian, “Scientists analyzed both common and rare species and found billions of regional or local populations have been lost. They blame human overpopulation and overconsumption for the crisis and warn that it threatens the survival of human civilization, with just a short window of time in which to act.” They also stated that a third of the thousands of species losing populations are not considered endangered and that all individual animals have lost 50 % of their population. Scientists blame this on overpopulation and overconsumption. Although this is an issue that would affect the world, California has had their own

problems with the extinction of species. The El Segundo Blue Butterfly is only found in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties. Within the last decade, they have been making a remarkable recovery. The Center for Biology Diversity stated that in 1985 there was only 500 individual and by the year 2011”, they had slowly increased to 123,000. A remarkable recovery has also been by various California native species that were once in danger. Species such as the Southern Sea Otter, Peregrine Falcon, Humpback Whale, Bald Eagle, and Green Sea Turtle. This, however, doesn’t mean every species in California is safe. Researchers have found a decline in the Bee population. California has one of the largest pollination events. The fertilization of California almond trees requires 1.6 million domesticated bee colonies to pollinate. During the winter of 2013, beekeepers had a loss of 40-50% hives, which was an issue for the almond tree growers. Due to this issue, California court reversed the approval of two pesticides that are harmful to bees. This small step can help with the thriving and replenishment of an important species for our ecosystem.

The software Skype for business application is slowly going away. Microsoft has announced that they would like all Skype for business users to transfer over to their new program. The latest in software is known as Microsoft Teams, which is less than a year old since its launch in April of this year. Skype for business which was known as Lync back in 2015 is being taken down for its vast array of problems. The most important being it’s complicated system. Technology has always baffled new users but this software took it to a new level that even veteran video software users were complaining about. During
Microsoft’s “Teams” software launch, it was clear that Skype for business would be left in the dust and buried by its new predecessor. Though before completely transitioning to this new software, Microsoft still has hope that Skype for business can adapt. New Skype for business servers will be available during the last 6 months of 2018 for those who don’t wish to transfer over to Microsoft Teams right away. Microsoft is pushing Office 365 software users to join Teams to be the key software communication clients for Microsoft Teams instead of depending of Skype for Business users. On top of all this excitement for the new system software, Microsoft promises to enhance meetings in Teams by
adding AI (Artificial Intelligence). Microsoft created machinery that has cognitive services, speech recognition, and is constantly learning. This AI is embedded in the Team’s software to improve meeting experience and simplify meeting setups while also giving the user follow-up notifications after meeting have been conducted. All this forward movement from Teams as Microsoft’s main communication software puts tons of pressure on the Slack Software (which is Microsoft’s primary communications competitor). Microsoft plans to bundle their new software with Office 365 which in turn means that thousands to millions of Office 365 users will inevitably switch over to Microsoft Teams.

Russia has been the poster child in hacking lately, more and more nowadays. It seems like they’re always in the news for intervening with issues related to the United States. Well now is no different. This time they’ve found a major flaw in Google’s system. Whenever you use your smartphone to go on to google you may see the little Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) on the bottom of the first couple website names. Well those first couple ones are paid to be on the top of the
web browser incase you didn’t know. And it seems that Russia has been exploiting this using propaganda and all sorts of yellow journalism. The AMP feature was first brought to light in late 2015. It offered faster data speed to those who didn’t have fast enough data. To help make things easier for smartphone users phones that, have Google programed into them (which are almost Andriod phones) already have the AMP feature on them. Thanks to Google incorpoarting AWP, people have been using this for a while, and it has been widely used by many. But at the same time it has many raising an

eyebrow at this, even though it’s a lot more easier to click on junk. Rather than something more useful. Even though many have been abusing this, they have been cracking down on the issue. But even though they are trying to shut down on all these AMP propaganda, it’s going to be hard solely because Google has such a huge platform. So there’s no clear answer as to when this will be fixed, or even if it will evalt with. So just becareful when you decide to click on the links with an AMP right next to it. Because it might just be some junk, or someone trying desperately to sway you in a certain direction.

Twitter has become the One of the biggest contro-
versies among historians and scientists is how long ago was it when life began to blossom on Earth. Due to recently discovered evidence among
Japanese researchers a carbon fragment found in an ancient Ccanadian rock points to evidence further than we had originally thought
was remotely possible. Yuji Sano, a senior researcher at the University of Tokyo was one of the first to run tests the mineral.The Jjapanese researchers analyzed graphite embedded in a stone found in the Saglek region located on the North East part of Canada. The Japanese team solely based their claim on that some pieces of graphite share the same carbon isotope as living organisms. Organic life is more sustainable with the lighter version of carbon, called Carbon-12 versus the heavier version Carbon-13, and once it dies becomes muck that gets embedded into the earth, allowing the preservation of the carbon signature. With this new development in the world of science comes a large amount of scrutiny. Other scientists such as Martin Whitehouse of the Swedish Mmuseum of natural history doubts that the discovery is true. The carbon dating of rocks in this region are solely based on measurements of small specks of minerals known as Zircon. With the zircon that was dated back 4 billion years old, Whitehouse says that it was one of many other sam-
ples found kilometers away. He also supports his scrutiny by stating, to give the claim that the biogenetic evidence is the oldest sample found to date the geochronology has to be unmistakable. Furthermore, he hais supported in his own theoretical scrutiny by Minik Rosing a geologist from the Natural History Museum of Denmark. If the discovery holds up to more scrutiny it will pinpoint a milestone for scientists understanding of the earliest life on this planet. Originally the sea was formed 4.3 billion years ago, during this point in time meteorites were hitting the surface of the iuncomplete earth. With this reacher developing it states that this very rough and dangerous period in time could have had living organisms living on the surface. The Earth at this time in its stages of evolution was still a new entity since the big bang, so to have life that is sustainable where there was thought to be none. Is beyond a big deal for the scientific community, it reshapes how we view life on other planets.

A recent study conducted by the European Commission claims that piracy of video games may actually help in increased sales for the medium. The study continues to say that for every 100 games that are illegally obtained through piracy, a number of 24 games are actually purchased after the illegal act has taken place. “This positive effect of illegal downloads and streams on the sales of games may be explained by the industry being successful in converting illegal users to paying users,” says the unnamed author. The basis of this study comes from the survey given to over 30,000 consumers in six different countries: UK, Germany, France, Spain, Poland, and Sweden. The
common questions of “do you pirate games?” and “would you pirate games if piracy was not an option?” were not normally asked to the survey takers with the intention of getting a more accurate answer. Though the study was somewhat self-contained, the same study continues to claim that piracy amongst the countries mentioned mostly affect other mediums such as film and music. Video games was the only subject to have a positive outcome from illegal action. Though piracy, for the most part, is frowned upon by any industry, one has to wonder whether or not the action of acquiring something illegally doesn’t open a doorway to honest actions. The model of releasing a game for free for a limited amount of time gains the interest of the player to possibly purchase the remaining
percent of the game honestly and thus acquiring a new fan of the product. Games such as “Super Mario Run” for mobile devices offer the chance to test out the beginning of the game for free until the player is prompted to pay for the rest of the game. Though the Mario game is only for mobile devices, bigger video game companies follow this example to a degree. The mention of DLC (downloadable content) puts off consumers because of the feeling of being cheated out of a complete game. This, in turn, forces a handful of players to obtain the initial game for free through piracy. If the far-fetched concept of video game companies embracing players pirating their product can be accepted, then perhaps the piracy can lead to the interest of supporting said companies in the future with actual money.

Up and coming R&B artist, SZA, took the Novo stage Monday night in Los Angeles as part of her Ctrl tour. In early June SZA released her album Ctrl which contains her hit songs, The Weekend and Love Galore ft. Travis Scott. The songs of this album contain honest and real emotions about lowself esteem and heartbreak the artist experiences which fans find easy to relate to. SZA’s onstage presence was full of energy and positivity as she would cheerfully and bubbly dance from end of the stage to the other. Before
most songs, the R&B artist would explain the songs to the crowd and the crowd would cheer back in agreement to her relatable experiences and feelings.Though there were some technical difficulties, SZA did not let that ruin her or the crowd’s energy. During her song Doves in the Wind, Kendrick Lamar made a surprise appearance to the stage and the crowd went wild. The song features the American rapper and once SZA looked to the back of the stage to indicate his appearance everybody cheered in disbelief. From being in the crowd, there was environment of love, confidence, and support

The Magic School Bus Rides Again and It’s a Mixed Bag DANIELLE ANZURES A&E Editor

When watching a piece of media that’s been remade for a newer audience, it’s always important to go in with a fresh mindset. With that being said, Netflix’s The Magic School Bus Rides Again premiered September 29 and it’s rollercoaster of emotions for its viewers, especially for those who grew up with the original PBS 90s show. The start of the 13 episode season opens with the class and the audience being introduced to Ms.Fiona Felicity Frizzle, voiced by Kate McKinnon, who is Ms.Valerie Frizzle’s little sister and replacement. Along with Fiona comes new student, Jyoti, who seem to replace Phoebe from the original, of course not all the students are happy with the change which leads to the plot of the first episode. Overall the show is decent, the main issue with it is the animation. Now it’s worth noting that the original was a fairly popular show when it came out so it had the budget to do more, but it doesn’t excuse the poor quality of it. There are times where the animation looks fine and there are times where it just looks choppy. There are moments of hard work and the backgrounds are really the saving grace of the otherwise lackluster style, which is a bit surprising when looking at Netflix’s other animated shows. As for the voice acting it’s fine with most of the kids just sounding like kids, there is really nothing special aside

The theme song also has been updated with Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda and it is just as good as the original and is arguably one of the show’s best attributes. Along with the theme song, the setting has been updated to match a more modern style, not only do the characters’ 90s garb get a modern spin, but the school is given new gadgets that fit the classrooms of this new decade. This is a bit strange and does bring up questions about why the creators didn’t just create new students for the show, especially since this is meant for children of this generation.
Regardless the show does use the students from the original, who currently seem to be based more on character traits, but this is a children program which the main objective is to teach kids science at a level they can understand while still making it fun and engaging. And for the most part, it does that. So far none of the lessons from the new series appear to be replicas of the original, they are instead new which does follow similar beats of the original. At the end of each episode they even bring back the end segment where any scientific mistakes are cleared up during a phone call and it’s nice that they gave that part to Ms. Frizzle. If you’re looking for a shock of nostalgia maybe stay away from this series and just

Upon arrival outside, was the commotion of families mingling amongst one another, the performance had gathered quite a crowd. The sounds of faint voices chattering when you walk into a completely silent room. The dancers in the back get ready for their time on stage. As people start to walk into the auditorium taking their seats ready for an intense two hours. The founder and head of the organization called Nuestras Raíces, Dr. Argelia Andrade. Andrade started the organization by teaching young children to dance in a traditional way and saw she was making an impact on many lives with the Music and Dances. She said wanted to teach more and more people about the cultural benefits to knowing the old ways. That’s exactly what she did, I spoke to her after the performance and she stated that she not only wants to teach the traditional and cultural way of Mexico but the very essence of it as well. When I asked her why she chose dance in her own life to teach, she happily replied with, “I’ve been dancing since I was about 3 year old, this was my calling and I’ve always loved it”.

Dr. Argelia speaks about the vast amount of instruments and how it all incorporates to making the rhythmic tone and where it comes from in Mexico. The concert itself had 3 different styles starting with Son Jarocho, then onto Son Huasteco or Huapango Huasteco, and lastly Norteño music. She talked about the regional differences and how they came to be such as Son Jarocho it was started in Southern Veracruz. The city of Veracruz was largely popular in the early 1500’s due to it having a port that the Spanish used, this caused a blend of cultural exchange unmatched by other
cities. The Son Jarocho is performed on the Jarana Jarocho for rhythm, the Requinto Jarocho for melody, and Jarocho Harp is most important for bass and melody. The second was norteño music which incorporates Polka, Redova, Huapango, Waltz, Chotís, Corrido and many others. She also stated that Nortño music isn’t European music in Mexico, it is European enhanced Mexican music that has an array of instruments just like Son Jarocho. Finally, the last style is Son Huasteco or Huapango Huasteco, which on top of many instruments just mentioned also needs the Zapateado or footwork. providing an intense beat of rhythmic unity. Overall the concert was very well done. For those who understand and know the heritage, it was a heartwarming event that was most enjoyable. Watching the Dancers spin and move with the music as if all were synced together providing the audience with a huge sense of satisfaction. Musicians were very skilled and very in tune with the crowd, at one point the lead vocalist asked for song requests as the dancers change costumes for the next dance. Once someone yelled out Tragos Amargos by Ramon Ayala, everyone cheered as the song progressed the vocalist asked the audience to join in and the participation
was outstanding. Being very playful with the crowd after another dance he asked for request again and this time someone yelled a song but wasn’t willing to sing. The lead vocalist was more than happy to tell him, “if you request it then you must sing along…” everyone snickered and giggled at the comment. During the last performance the women entered the stage in a gorgeous array of dresses as flower petals flow in the wind vibrantly. The men joined in after some time and they as the saying goes, “danced the night away.”

A crowd at The Circle OC in Huntington Beach lined up to dance along to the hottest and newest EDM of 2017. The line started moving once it was 9 pm September 28th to 29th. The club employees were kind and free tickets to another show were handed out to people who stood in line. So that off that bat was a bonus for the night. Slowly but surely the dance floor began to fill with deephouse for folks to dance. Around 10:30 pm the club was only half full, yet many were still waiting for the main artist who was rumored to be playing on stage around midnight. About every single person was filled with positive vibrations on the dancefloor. Did not matter if someone couldn’t dance, everyone moving along to the beat had a good time. Dutch DJ and producer

Wiwek from Utrecht made a travel from Europe to come to California and play shows throughout September. Wiwek was born in the Netherlands and is of Indian descent. Wiwek’s father is an Indian musician and singer. He is best known for being the creator of Jungle Terror. Jungle Terror was first created when Wiwek was playing and explaining his music to his friends. Then he uploaded tracks to SoundCloud which eventually became popular and lead to
Skrillex signing him onto his record label causing Wiwek’s music to be well known in the United States. By midnight the whole dancefloor was full. It was so packed it went from being a cool room to hot and steamy. The main DJ arrived and began to play his tracks. The music was so good there was not a single person not jumping up and down or headbanging. “Dude Wiwek is known for Jungle Terror!” Ryan would point out that like many producers Wiwek was all about bringing

his cultural style of music and was known for playing a jungle type of electronic dance music. Throughout the night the party was absolutely positive, strangers kept dancing together and some would even exchange social media information. Overall the DJ played an awesome set people were even yelling his name at the end to play another track. As so he did and that last song ended the night with everyone jumping up and down all together.

The original editor and founder of Playboy, Hugh Hefner, died Tuesday September 27th of natural causes in his Holmby Hills, Los Angeles home, at 91.He is to be buried in Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles next to Marilyn Monroe. Hefner leaves behind a legacy, his wife Crystal, 30, and children Christie, David, Marston, and Cooper. Cooper Hefner, the Chief Creative Officer of Playboy enterprises gave an emotional statement Friday via Twitter of his father’s passing. “My father lived an exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer and a leading voice behind some of the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom. He defined a lifestyle and ethos that lie at the heart of the Playboy brand, one of the most recognizable and enduring in history. He will be greatly missed by many, including his wife Crystal, my sister Christie and my brothers David and Marston, and all of us at Playboy Enterprises.” Other celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton gave a statement about Hefner’s passing by recalling their own memories of him. For women like Kardashian and Hilton, Hefner was considered a hero to the sexual revolution by going against the status quo. These movements included NOW’s (National Organization for Women) Legal Defense and Education Fund as well as the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment). How could feminist be against Hefner and his ideologies if he was such a strong supporter of feminism? Perhaps, because Hefner was primarily a supporter of feminism for the sexual revolution and, perhaps, the sexual liberation of women is not the only liberation women everywhere need. On the contrary, Hefner supported abortion rights and birth control but where would the man that claimed to have had sex with over a thousand women be without at least birth control? On the lighter side, he may have had more than four children. Hefner benefited from women’s movements more than just birth control, after all he gained wealth from placing pictures of naked women in a magazine. The sexual revolution of the feminist movement is one that Hefner and men alike, benefitted from. The man became an icon, a legend, and a role model to other men and women. On Saturday President Donald Trump tweeted the NBA Champions Golden State Warriors were no longer welcomed to the white house due to the hesitation of Warriors’ Point Guard Stephen Curry. It has been a long-lasting tradition that dated back to 1865 for championship sports teams to be invited to the White House. Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors decided to not visit the White House due to the senseless actions of the president. If I were in their position, I wouldn’t visit the White House either. As the most powerful man in America, I believe the president should try to unite people together instead of dividing them. The comments made by our 45th President are seen as childish and should not be tolerated as he

Disney princesses, especially ones from the beginning generation, tend to get a bad rap when it comes to being good role models for children, primarily young girls. Often time it’s common to see critics tear down these popular characters and go over the reasons they aren’t good representation. Snow White lives with seven men and does all the housework, Aurora from Sleeping Beauty isn’t given much screen time or lines, Cinderella is often seen as someone who just wanted a prince and Ariel from The Little Mermaid apparently gives up not only her fins, but her voice for man. In some cases the criticism is valid, but Disney Princesses have so much more to offer. Not only in their actions, but in how they treat others. Newer princesses like Moana show young girls to take initiative and become leaders. Brave’s Merida, technically still under Disney, takes a similar approach with Merida actively wanting a choice where her life goes. Frozen’s sisters, Anna and Elsa, both show the strongest love doesn’t have to be romantic.
Tiana, from Princess and the Frog, is the only princess with a career outside of ruling a kingdom. Mulan saves all of China, not only using military tactics, but her femininity to her advantage. Even some the first generation princesses teach girls to value kindness even when it feels impossible. Cinderella continues to be kind even while living under roof her tormentors, so does Snow White. Ariel who has always been enchanted with the human world takes steps towards getting what she wants, the prince was kind of just the cherry on top to the whole deal. Disney princess are not only pretty women, but they’re active steerers in their own lives. Are they all perfect? Absolutely not, there is room for improvement in the characters and stories. Disney can be more diverse in a number of ways and expand the princess line in more great ways. But for what it’s worth some Disney princesses are good role models for anyone.

Up in the morning, bags packed and homework done, already at school with the sun’s morning rays just breaking through the clouds. It was only yesterday that the same morning rituals were carried out. Completed so many times that it has become part of the day. Following is class lectures and assignments. Then even more practice or a game. Work is the cherry on top after a long day of staying focused during lecture and endless drills at practice. This is but the tip of the iceberg to a somewhat gargantuan hidden weight.
A balance is always being worked towards and achieved. There can be no missed step, prioritization is key and time is an invaluable resource that one can never have enough of. To some this routine of class, practice, and work may seem like a towering behemoth of responsibility, ready to swallow whole all those that dare carry the load. Yet this is what Isabel Garay does everyday, with a smile on her face nonetheless. Garay is a second-year student who welcomes the challenges of being a student-athlete at Rio. Soccer is her passion, second only to academics. With a summer filled with training, Isabel can’t

Having the grades along with skill is what most Coaches look for, talent with a ball and hindsight for academics. Whether it’s practicing for that extra hour, or studying in advance for an exam, Isabel couldn’t ask for anything else. Garay is one of the many student-athletes that Rio Hondo harbors, and a prime example at that.

It’s easy to be judgmental towards people who use marijuana because of the negative image the media portrays it to be. The first thing, and probably the only thing, is that society in general think of the cannabis user is that they are just a generic “pot head.” The term shouldn’t be forcefully placed upon every user of the substance because it is not fair for those who smoke or use other cannabis related substances for medicinal purposes. When it comes to dealing with everyday stress related obstacles, going to college can increase stress levels dramatically when combined with other things going on in a student’s life. SPORTS Rio’s Volleyball Ladies Fall to El Camino

El Camino College’s volleyball team visited Rio Hondo on Friday, September 29, to take on the red hot Lady Roadrunners squad. The El Camino Warriors were able to put an end to the Rio Ladies’ winning streak after taking the first three sets of an exciting match. Rio Hondo’s Lady Roadrunners had won three games in a row prior to their matchup against El Camino. They kept up their solid play Friday night, staying close to the Warriors for most of the match. The Lady Roadrunners were down by just one, 22-21, in the first set, but the Warriors were able to rattle off three straight points and take the set, 2521. In the second set, Rio Hondo was once again head-to-head with El Camino, trailing by just two, 20-18. The Warriors took control of the set, however, and went on a 5-2 run. They won the second set with a score of 25-20.

Set number three started ofF promising for the Rio Ladies. They jumped ahead to a 7-2 lead early on. The Warriors kept fighting, though, and really tested the Lady Roadrunners’ grit. El Camino was able to crawl back and tie the third
set at eight, but Rio Hondo showed they were just as tough. The two teams traded kills and attacks until El Camino led 18-15 with Rio in possession of the ball. Rio had some momentum going until some confusion on their part re-
sulted in a substitution violation. The violation increased El Camino’s lead to 19-15 and gave the Warriors the ball as well. The mistake proved to be costly for the Rio Ladies. El Camino pulled away with a 6-2 run after the violation.
The Warriors won their third straight set, this time with a score of 25-17. Lady Roadrunners’ head coach Teddi Esko has been preaching about consistency to her team lately. While the Rio Ladies may have been a bit inconsistent in Friday’s matchup, Coach Esko still feels her team is getting better. “Our team is improving on their consistency,” stated Esko, “At times our unforced errors are due to a lack of focus.” Coach Esko also feels her team should not hang their heads low after this loss, as El Camino is no easy team to match up with. She is also hopeful her team will learn something from this loss and apply it to their next game at Pasadena City College on Wednesday. “This was a tough loss for our team, however we competed against a very good program,” said Coach Esko. “We can use this loss as a learning experience and move forward to next week’s match against Pasadena… We continue to grow stronger as a team each match. Our team is definitely prepared to play PCC.”

Roadrunner Men’s Water Polo Falls to Mt. SAC Mounatineers at Home
The Roadrunners played with high intensity all throughout their matchup with Mt. SAC.

Tough luck for the Roadrunners as they hosted Mt. SAC for yet another close match. The Roadrunners put up a valiant effort but ended up coming just short in their face-off against the Mountaineers. Right from the beginning Rio sought to set the tempo and scored early off a counter attack. Looking for more quick success Rio
tried to get away with multiple post up shots but were unable to capitalize on these early efforts. Looking to get their offense going Mt. Sac answered with three goals, while Rio managed only managed to put one other goal away during the onslaught. Heading into the second quarter Rio trailed three to two, yet got swept away with multiple defensive stops by Mt. SAC’s goalie Jake Simmons.

With every stroke taken against their adversaries it seemed that the Mountaineers were always one ahead. Having tipped things in their opposition’s favor after failing to stop a power play goal, the Roadrunners found themselves outscored six to two heading into the half. Having a limited bench, the break in competition gave much needed energy to an offensive attack that had began to sink beneath the
surface. Diving head first into the second half having gotten a much needed rest, Rio began to play with urgency. The third quarter was filled with intense action as utility player Daniel Lozano led the Roadrunners back into things with four goals. Riding this wave Sophomore Kent Mertins got in on the action and got himself on the board as well. Mt. SAC however retaliated with
goals of their own. Seeking to form a last minute surge, Rio’s Captain, Jacobo Garrido, forced one in right past his defender with less than two minutes to go in regulation. Fearing more goals, Mt. Sac’s head coach made multiple subs and began to play conservative, eating away valuable seconds that the Roadrunner’s could’ve used in their late offensive campaign. Mt. SAC’s early lead in the end proved too steep to surpass, and took the brunt of Rio’s fourth quarter surge. Having eaten up enough of the clock, the game ended with the ball in the hands of the Mountaineers with the final score of 12 to eight. Although having lost the Men’s Water Polo team remains optimistic, heading into the final games of their schedule they look to still secure a place in Conference. At this point places second to fourth can be taken by anybody, moving forward Rio looks to still be a contender. Now only time will tell as the Roadrunners look to edge out the South Coast Conference powerhouse Long Beach City on October 4, 2017 at 4pm at home.
