Assembly Bill AB-19:
California College Promise A Free Year Of Community College JAIME APARICIO Staff Writer

With the Rio Promise granting a year of free tuition for all full-time students at Rio Hondo, a similar measure has been passed to expand the attendance of college throughout the entire state of California. Assemblymen Miguel Santiago, David Chiu, and Kevin McCarty presented the California College Promise, which got approval on September 13th, to waive fees for first-time full-time students.
When having the floor at the assembly in order to explain the measure, Santiago had this to say, “We know that if a student goes full time, a student’s success rate is much higher than if they go part time.” Similar laws at the assembly meeting were presented by legislators to tackle the cost of college, including that of attending State schools debt free, but were met with no outcome. And although the idea of introducing free tuition to students who have not con-

Rio Hondo hosted a conference in the Student Union Center on September 18 to talk about the DACA Program renewal plan. Diana Escamilla and Sebastian Mendez, the main speakers of the event, discussed many topics on the current situation that has been going on since the decision to rescind DACA on the 5th. Many undocumented students as well as their families and citizens have been protesting since the announcement; with several already been arrested and deported. Rio Hondo alone has 520 undocumented students enrolled; the conference was mainly held for the these students as well as those who have family involved in the DACA program. They offered support and shared important dates for deadlines that have to be met such as making sure they renew their application by October 5th. “The plan passed the assembly but is yet to be signed by brown.” stated Diana Escamilla. She believes the more we humans stand together and fight hand in hand we will win and get the results we want, not only for this
generation but for those yet to rise. Sebastian Mendez one of the main speakers at the event, went over the 10 Amendment we have as people here in America, and how they should not only apply to citizens but to undocumented people as well. “There is no law that denies education to anyone no matter the situation, where there’s a will there’s a way.” Mendez. Current students at Rio Hondo gave their thoughts on DACA and their thoughts of it being abolished, including sophomore Priscilla Rodriguez, “it was interesting to learn more about DACA and how it affects so many students and their families, the government is wrong if it gets away with this; it makes you think what else can they get away with. Other than that it was amazing seeing how many people are there for one another.” Freshmen Natalie Torres states,“whoever has not taken their education seriously needs to get it together! There’s so many people who will not have the privilege to education soon, and also make sure to let everyone know to renew their application by October 5th.”

when it comes to student success,” says vice president Debbie Cochrane of Oakland-based Institute for College Access and Success. The vice president would also like to see the state offer more options for students to pay for other expenses other than tuition, such texts books and housing. Governor Jerry Brown however, hesitates to give his full support of the idea of free tuition; thinking that the waiver will be approved for all applying students rather than approving the application for
those who are in need of it. The Department of Finance, which advises Gov. Brown, opposes the new program because of the additional 30 to 50 million dollars in financial aid that will be added to assist future college students. Despite the confliction revolving around the new promise program, free tuition should be seen as a positive outcome. Enrollment increase for San Francisco, Oregon, and Tennessee city colleges rose because of the successfully passed programs that similarly grant free tuition.

To not care and learn from what’s transpiring is an insult to the entirety of the human race. The damage that has been done to people simply within the last month is devastating. The lives affected by the damage in and around Mexico City from the Sept. 19, 7.1 Raboso earthquake, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria and the Typhoon Doksuri in central Vietnam are enough to put people on edge.While your neighbors stock up on canned goods that they are going to forget about, many are preparing for their futures. Many have reacted to these tragedies by either helping others or preparing themselves for the future crazyness to come. The 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit mexico was about 650 kilometers from the epicenter of the 8.1-magnitude earthquake that hit them on September 8. Such events have inspired the countrymen to work hard on not only saving their people and rebuilding their homes, but to work on establishing programs and politicians that are going to do more to prevent such damages from happening in the future.. The Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republic called on the United Nations about how to deal with climate phenomena in general. Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado did point out that as a caribbean island, he and his people are always going to be exposed to such phenomena. And because of that, they are prompted to speak out on the subject of climate change. “...it is absolutely not enough to sign agreements on climate change; It is critical for these agreements to be coherent, move forward a joint agenda, and develop concrete action plans,” said Maldonado. Maldonado proposes that the U.N. create a special fund that deals with supplying information, awareness, and prevention as well as ‘resilient strategies’. It seems difficult to look in the future and prepare for it while the present is so pressing. There have been plenty of jokes referring to the end of the world, most describing some biblical disaster where everyone is going to be feeling the aster. “The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair. The whole moon turned blood red and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.” This line, describing the sith of the seven seals to be open in the apocalypse, is something that as long as it doesn’t occur, I feel like we’ll be alright. There’s a group of people that are waiting for their phlebotinum; the piece of your life that’s missing and once you find it, the fairy tale ending you ‘deserve’ will finally consume you. People tread water, and stay exactly where they are in life. Hopefully with so many tragic events consuming people, those who are in a rut can look at the events and realize that there is so much to do in this world. Because although it is the literal end of their world for some, for many it’s not. So stop being stagnant and do what you want to do. While the dream/ idea of a life time is everlasting; the window of opportunity is not.

OverWatch Launches Major League Will Debut in January

It’s been a year in the making, but Blizzard is finally launching its Major League E-Sports in January of 2018. The League has 12 teams confirmed for season one, as well dates for the first few games. It is reported that the league will officially kick off on the 18th of January. With play offs in July that will be hosted in LA, and Preseason this upcoming December. They will have teams based in Philadelphia, that will be owned by the same group that owns the NHL Philadelphia Flyers. Two famous E-sport teams OpTic and Envy will be located in Texas. While most teams will be based off in the United States, they will also be a handful of clubs around the world some representing London, Seoul, Shanghai

The internet went bonkers when the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X were announced on September 12. What drove the ‘net even more crazy was the $999 price tag that was smacked on the new iPhone X. While a $1000 phone seems crazy, Apple CEO Tim Cook thinks the iPhone X is being sold at a “value price.” Cook sat down with ABC’s Robin Roberts during Good Morning America on Wednesday to talk about the new iPhones. Ozark Soars, Solidifies Rank Amongst Entertainment’s Upper Crust

Very rarely are there shows that can make an audience want to understand the trials and tribulations associated with building a family, yet the Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams web series Ozark does just that. Ozark plays out as a moderately paced tale of Marty Byrd’s ill fated decision to launder money for the second largest drug cartel in the world while also seeking to maintain his roles as father and husband. He has found himself having to relocate with his family from Chicago to Missouri, Ozarks in order to atone for the mistakes of his friend who attempted to sleight a portion of the money they agreed to launder for the cartel. Marty’s new task to make amends for the offense and only way to survive- clean 500 million dollars worth of dirty money in five years for the cartel. Seldom was there ever a work capable of rivaling the outlandishness of what Ozark, as a series is able to achieve. The series ultimately finds its groove, in the
ability to juxtapose the seemingly unrelated. The audience can’t help but to be engrossed by what feels like a Street Knowledge 101 course being taught by a middle-class father who drives a minivan and tucks his kids into bed every night. The show manages to illustrate the fine line between the grotesque and beautiful with a setting that doesn’t pride itself on being only aesthetically pleasing, but also symbolic. What is dark and inviting is often what is unknown and capable of arousing allure. Cinematographer Pepe Avila Del Pino seems to know this, as he employs a psychedelic flare to his shots. With shadowy practical lighting and a bluegray color palette, Ozark is a peering into the subconscious of all those displaced by the
Byrd family’s web of lies. It stands out as an attempt to realistically chronicle what dealings with a narco conglomerate could only ever amount to; ambivalence and guilt. Where other series falter at recognizing the importance of setting, Ozark soars. Del Pino’s work behind the camera beckons the viewer to daringly venture into the murkiness of a life marked by ambivalence, as Marty Byrd is torn between representing the second largest drug cartel in the world, and being a father to his children. It is clear through Del Pino’s cinematography that the importance of intricately placed details goes hand in hand with the audience’s understanding of the cutthroat environment in which our beloved characters maneuver

Syfy came out with the idea to adapt short online horror stories, known as creepypastas, into full fledge seasons for a show called Channel Zero when they released their first installment last year. Its first season tackled Kris Straub’s Candle Cove, a fan favorite among many online horror fans. This season Syfy is bringing Brian Alan Russell’s No-End House to life and so far it’s decent. The thing that sets the show going is a haunted house that’s meant to psychologically mess with people who go into it, with the next room getting progressively more frightening than last. The four college-aged main characters are looking for thrills so they enter the house along with a group of background characters. As they continue through the rooms three characters are gone before even reaching the third room and the audience is left to continue the story with the main four, primarily Margot played by Amy Forsyth. The first episode does

make the audience want to know what happens next, but the scenes are a hit and miss. Most of the exciting parts for the beginning 30 minutes were in the first two and half minutes, as the story continues from there we learn about the main character and her situation and meet with her old and new friends; Jules played by Aisha Dee, J.D. (Seamus Patterson) and Seth (Jeff Ward). The story and horror element doesn’t really kick until the house is physically introduced. After the house introduction it gets exciting, not only do we see the main characters interact with the house, but background characters set up the atmosphere for what’s to come. This show itself is interesting because the whole series is a fun concept similar to the likes of American Horror Story. What really gives it a cool spin is the fact that it’s based off a short internet story yet it’s more than likely going to have a different ending than the original. As it continues this could get stranger and give The Twilight Zone feel to viewers. In terms of visuals,
the scenes look well shot most of the time. There are slips into the shaky camera angle, but the camera work does a good job of creating a specific atmosphere for each scene and the special effects are pretty well done. Although this is a horror series, they are staying away from jump scares. Anything that could be considered scary is typically build up to and makes sense within the story being told. The characters currently aren’t the best, but they aren’t annoying either. The characters aren’t melodramatic or feel like dumb teenagers featured in poorly done horror movies, but you won’t immediately like them either. Along with the pretty great acting the next few episodes will more likely expand the characters and flesh them out, but for now the character with the most development is Margot. If you’re a fan of horror check the series out the first episode, This Isn’t Real, can be watched on Syfy’s YouTube channel. If you have the time give it a watch and see if it’s for you.
as best they can. There is ambition to be felt from every still and the groundwork laid for a discussion to be had because of Del Pino’s meticulous framing of every gesture. The Darkness of the Missouri Ozarks contrasted with the urban ambiance of Chicago, illustrates the difficulty of maintaining a civil nature amidst the savagery of narcos who lurk just out of plain sight, but are still present to keep tabs on Marty and his family. The familial dynamic at play amongst all groups of people sheds light on the depths of depravity to which people are willing to stoop in order to comfortably survive. Humanity holds on by a slim thread in the Missouri Ozarks as the feds, cartel, and citizenry all scheme against one another to reap the benefits
associated with each-others’ demise. Casting of the show’s dramatic roles is a breath of fresh air, as Jason Bateman blesses the role of Marty Byrd with a sense of authentic wittiness and shrewd business intellect. As equally masterful, is Julia Garner’s portrayal of juvenile delinquent Ruth Langmore, a knife wielding, gun toting girl with an admiration for Tupac who also possesses a cunning mind built for business. Audiences and critics alike will be eagerly anticipating the release of season 2, as it’s clear that this is a series with the potential to continue being a modern day TV masterpiece.

College life can be a challenging thing. It’s commonly said that money doesn’t buy happiness, but in the case of a college student, money can be quite the blessing. Students entering their college years have to figure out whether or not they must take out a loan in order to pay for their education or take on a job. Either decision can add a huge deal of stress if not managed correctly. That is why it is important for students of all ages to learn to budget their finances accordingly to their current lifestyle.. Students, most importantly, have to be honest and ask themselves how much they spend on a regular basis. “I would see how much I was given by [financial aid] and I knew that once a week my car only needed $25 the most for gas. The rest I would use for supplies and things I need like clothes, food, and books,” says former college student. Things such as bills, gas for an automobile, food, clothing, and money to go out with loved ones are typically a top priority when it comes to spending habits. Most of these spending habits can be accurately placed under the category of needs rather than wants; however, being able to have a little extra funds on the side for clothing and social gatherings would be placed under wants. It’s not being said to go on for days wearing
the same outfit while colleagues wear the latest fashion, what is suggested is to take what’s at hand and organize them in different patterns in order to give the illusion of new outfits. The longer this mix and match scenario can last, the better chance there is to last longer in saving money for future clothing options. Keeping track of the bills one accumulates is also imperative in having money left-over to spend, especially if the student is living out on their own. Those who continue to live at home dependent on parental figures have the benefit of not paying for rent. Assuming the parents are comfortable and willing to let their children stay rent free, of course. College student Brian Vazquez, who attends California State University of Long Beach comments, “I first calculate the gas I’ll spend the entire semester. Then books and supplies. . .I’ll add some coffee here and there and other snacks weekly. Tuition is free for me, so I don’t have to worry about that.” And recently, with the increase of smartphones and data usage that’s required to keep them operational, subscription services for certain apps (Spotify or Pandora) now have to be considered when organizing money. There’s also the weight of work hours if the student decides to tackle such responsibility of paying for their entire tuition if financial aid isn’t available. Juggling both work and school has been a common pastime for
college students for years, and the task of doing so doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. The amount of work hours varies from employer and location, so students should be wary when choosing a future
occupation. Depending on the salary earned from the workplace, the earnings that are saved should be set aside and spent wisely. The work flow also varies from location to location and the holiday seasons usually helps with
additional hours being given to employees. Whatever the case in earning some extra money, budgeting the funds with knowing how to and when to spend can go a long way.

OPINION Cheating: Is It Really Ever Okay? ANAMARIA APARICIO Staff Writer

Cheating is the type of topic that always gets people’s interest it’s something that has been heard of more than usual. Social Media platforms are being used as a way to expose people for their infidelity. One big scandal that has been growing like wildfire is about comedian Kevin Hart. He was last seen being intimate with actress Montia Sabbage. This wasn’t his first time cheating, his wife Eniko Parrish was previously the girl he had cheated on his first wife with. There’s a saying that goes “once a cheater always a cheater.” Does this mean when one is already a cheater, does that make it okay to cheat again? Is it something the significant other should expected to happen? Unless the couple is in a polyamorous relationship, I don’t believe it is right to betray the trust of a partner. Situations like this can cause trust issues and emotional damage in future relationships.
A person can always have an excuse such as, “I was drunk.” In order for them to get in this predicament they’re in, they must’ve swayed them enough to cheat on their significant other. If they’re drunk enough to not know what was going on, I don’t believe they’d be able to cheat or even form a coherent sentence. This person’s significant other would be on their mind no matter what. Being “blackout’ drunk isn’t a legitimate excuse you don’t blackout from a situation until the following day when you literally don’t remember anything. Hence the term “blackout drunk.” Cheating is never an excuse. If you don’t want to be with this other person, or even want to be in a committed relationship it ‘s always best to end things. This not only helps you be free to do what you’d like, but also helps you from hurting your significant other. There is no point in stringing things along this causes self-esteem and trust issues.
When Does It Stop Being Your Fault?

For years now, hundreds and thousands of women who have been rape victims have gotten shamed and blamed for being sexually assaulted. In some cases women are asked “What were you doing there at that hour?” “What were you wearing?” “Why were you by yourself?”. Questions like these are asked as if women, intentionally, bring this type of horror upon themselves. It’s assumed that their attire is the reason for being targeted and attacked. Sure the attacker carries the fault for the actual rape but the victim would be his motive for his actions. Victim Kenneka Jenkins was raped, murdered and found dead inside a hotel freezer. The hotel’s surveillance cameras caught Jenkins last moments stumbling through the hallways making it known that she had been intoxicated. Once the video leaked,
social media went on a tirade saying she should not have been dressed the way she was and she shouldn’t have left the room, which she was raped in, because she was drunk. A woman should be comfortable to wear whatever
she pleases without having to worry about a man getting the urge to attack them. They should be able to be independent and go wherever they please without having the paranoia that they’re being followed. Those interrogating the victim’s actions it
just goes to show the type of mentality they acquire. Unfortunately in today’s society, people do question certain details, but going as far as putting a victim that was sexually assaulted to shame is just wrong.

With four second half goals, Rio Hondo College beat Moorpark 4-0 on Wednesday night in Whittier to extend their unbeaten run to six games. In the first half, the Raiders held the Rio Roadrunners scoreless after a strong defensive display, leaving the hosts frustrated going into the halftime break. The Roadrunners gained some momentum kicking off the first 10 minutes of the second half when forward Christian Bernabe slammed the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning goal into the back of the net. “They put numbers back and it’s very difficult to penetrate that and when frustration set in we weren’t able to capitalize on our scoring opportunities,” said Roadrunners coach Orlando Brenes, “Basically, when we scored the first one, the rest followed easily.” Once Bernabe opened the scoring, three other Roadrunners got into the scoring mix - forward Daniel Virgen (Fernando Guerrero) capped the night off in the 85th minute after forward Jose Maderos (Alejandro Luna) and midfielder Luna (Jacob De La Peza) extended the initial lead. When Virgen made it four, the freshman became Rio’s 11th goal scorer of the season - showing that dependance on one player is not in future plans for head coach Orlando Brenes this season. One game away from conference play, Bernabe, a Sonoma State transfer, spearheads the attack for the Roadrunners as winger Carlos Zarate and captain Moses Gutierrez nourish the center forward in front of midfielders like Luna, Sergio Saucedo, and another Seawolves transfer Fernando Guerrero. Up next for the Roadrunners is a home game against Santa Monica at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Friday evening, September 22, at the Rio Hondo Soccer Field was the final resting place for the Santa Monica Corsairs who were bested by the Rio Hondo Roadrunners in a 10 fight to the final whistle. The atmosphere before the soccer match at Rio Hondo College was one of increasingly apparent tension between the soon to clash teams in a match described as being “the momentum shifter for the season” by Roadrunner Joseph Fuentes who was on hand to support his team from the stands. The match itself was a spectacle to be seen indeed, complete with sidelining injuries, and heated verbal exchanges. The course of the game

was continuously disrupted by the spontaneity of each team’s ability to find themselves on relentless advances down each others’ sidelines. With a string of offensive plays foiled by the Santa Monica defense for the first ten minutes of the match, it was anybody’s game until Rio Hondo’s very own Jacob De La Peza directed a sudden ball from center field for fellow Roadrunner Jose Maderos. In a display of mastery reminiscent of Ronaldinho’s at the Camp Nou, Maderos found it in his ability to settle the ball with his chest and sink
a well-placed volley into the net. Such a spectacle of force would seem to haunt the Corsairs for the remainder of the bout as they struggled to find their footing against the Roadrunner midfielder’s ability to make ingenious plays. From the 45th minute onward, the Roadrunners and Corsairs bombarded one another with what amounted to nothing more than exciting attempts; however, by the 70th minute, it was clear to see a renewed sense of urgency grace the field. The Corsairs dared to increasingly venture into

the vicinity of the Roadrunner defense. Seldom did a pass, throw in, or corner kick go amiss, in a last ditch Corsair effort to materialize. A total of thirteen Corsair attempts on goal were denied by heroic demonstrations of excellence by Roadrunner goalkeepers Jesus Rendon and Jose Paredes; respectively. This final preseason performance under the Friday night lights was a strong showing for the Rio Hondo Roadrunners, who demonstrated superiority on the scoreboard for the entirety of the match.
