Hundreds of people gathered for the Soldiers and Families Holiday Celebration at the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, Sunday, December 3. Whittier Narrows Park, Representative Solis, Ahavat Torah Congregation, Veterans in Prison post #1(V.I.P.) and Veterans Holiday( a
major financial contributor to the event) all collaborated . The event started with general introductions as well as an award ceremony, separated by a musical performance by kimberly haynes and Hilda L. Solis, who addressed her district and the families present. After her speech the awards continued and recognized dozens of soldiers from the 155th Battal-
ion. After the ceremony the guests were treated to food, drinks, bounce house, face painters and a petting zoo.] A major organizer of the event was Joe Leal, 304 Combat Sustainment Support Battalion 30 actively takes care of soldiers and their families. “These events are very important, because unlike active duty are support system is the community… in
the military we train, train train, but it’s also good to involve our families so that the families can see exactly why their serving and network with other family members … these families glue together and support each other. Because while the serviceman is deployed, mentally so is the family members.” Leal works part time in the organization Continued on page 4

World AIDS day is December 1, but the Associated Students of Rio Hondo College decided to host a booth in honor of World AIDS Day Wednesday, November 29 in order to bring awareness. ASRHC chose this day since more students are on campus Monday through Thursday than on Friday, the actual day. Their motive was to bring awareness about AIDS to as many students as possible. The booth contained the red ribbons that represent AIDS awareness, beverages and cookies to attract students, as well as many forms of contraception such as condoms and birth control. The display included birth control options like the pill, diaphragms, sponges and the female condom. The booth had these items to show that there is

more than one way to practice safe sex and prevent AIDS. Members of ASRHC also went as far as demonstrating and explaining how some of these uncommon forms of birth control, like the female condom, work.
Along with ASRHC, human sexuality professor Melissa Rifino-Juarez was on hand and donated condoms to the booth for all students to grab. Professor Juarez was there to answer any questions students had about AIDS and
the many methods of practicing safe sex. “We’re bringing awareness.” said ASRHC member Arlette Raigosa, as she was explaining to students the other forms of birth control. Continued on page 2
Rio Hondo’s forensics speech and debate team was back at it again participating at the PSCFA Fall Championship hosted by Moorpark College on December 1-3. It was the team’s last tournament of the mid-season with Rio Hondo contending against 252 competitors from 37 universities and colleges from all around. In the end Rio Hondo triumphed in achieving two bronze medals and having 6 of our team members in the top 25 in speaking in the tournaments Going in on Friday and Winning a bronze medal, David Flores made our team advance into the eliminations rounds in IPDA debate. In our Parliamentary team ups on Saturday Alberto Sampieri and Rodolfo Juarez-Pinedo also made it into the elimination rounds awarding Rio Hondo with another bronze medal. In a contributing effort, 6 of our team members were some of the top speakers that dominated in the tournament with Alberto Sampieri reaching 4th, Gabriela Rodriguez 9th, Rodolfo Juarez-Pinedo 11th, Frank Ramirez 17th, Samuel Cox 24th, and David Flores 25th. These efforts wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the team’s assistant judges Michael Moran, Patricia Hughes, and Alex Cadena as they were there to judge in the competition and more importantly provide insight and knowledge to the team as they prepared arguments and cases for their rounds Although it’s the last tournament for the semester, the team already has its sight focused on the next back to back tournament to take place in January 2018 in University of Utah.

In instances of seasonal times that call for the utmost compassion, it cannot be emphasized enough that there is no wrong or right way to celebrate the Christmas holiday. As we’re told that fantasy should supersede reality for this one day in December, we must ask ourselves: Why? What is the thing that possessed the Grinch to acquiesce to the demands of his society and Rudolph to even want to demonstrate that his red nose knows what path to follow throughout the night sky? As the end of the year is near, and people all around us begin to assume a new air of compassion for one another with socialites running amok, we must ask ourselves, what is the true meaning of Christmas? Delving into the origins of such an important day in mass culture is as frustrating as it is confusing. Where the day once signaled the beginning of the winter solstice to the empires of times now past, the Christmas spirit was once a time of unparalleled decadence and debauchery. Today, it’s much more in line with presents, stockings, and Santa (Satan if you rearrange the letters) Claus. How it truly got this way, or why it’s celebrated in December is anyone’s guess as the bible makes no mention of Jesus’ birth date. For many, the true meaning of Christmas lies in the somber realization of loneliness or sorrow at the fact that they can’t afford to gift their loved ones. While the day is certainly heralded as the designated time to cherish loved ones by giving them presents, its importance lies gestures of love. In the El Paisano newsroom, we reckon that the true meaning of Christmas’ beauty lies in the very many ways that it varies from perspective to perspective. In regards to the 25th day in December, and why it holds such a special place in the hearts of many across the world, it stands true that people have routinely been willing to do the most just to make their loved ones feel as special as possible. Perhaps Christmas had little as much to do than with

the birth of the one many call the Messiah, but instead, the manner of sacrifices made by all of those willing to partake in the celebration of the birth of something that sounds as ridiculous as it does awesome. The three wise men were willing to make the trek across some desert in the dead of winter when it was cold as balls all for the sake of appeasing a child. If that doesn’t say that the true meaning of Christmas is to uphold the happiness of the children and preserve their innocence for as long as possible, encouraging fun in a world where they have yet to see how evil it has become, then we really don’t know what other purpose Christmas day, or any day for that matter, should really serve. And so, perhaps it’s a temporary ceasefire in all the drama that goes on in your daily household, or a day just like any other where everything is all fun and games, no matter what, it would remain the truth that nothing separates this day from the next. By nature, we’re only wired to want to feel like we belong to something and can account for the happiness of those we have a passionate affinity for, so why not live as normally as on any other day and recognize that this moment, too, like all the others in your life, is truly all you make of it. If we can’t attribute a definition to love, how can we be expected to attribute true meaning to the spirit of a season in which that very same feeling should reign unconditionally supreme? Your guess, in that regard, is as good as ours.
Matt Lauer Fired From NBC Due To Sexual Assault And Harrasement charges MALENA LOPEZ Staff Writer

The NBC Today Show announces Wednesday morning that their highest ranking anchor, Matt Lauer, is fired after being accused of “inappropriate sexual behavior”. An NBC staff member came forward about Lauer’s inappropriate behavior and had a photo and text messages from Lauer as proof. It is said that this photo was too graphic to not take action and fire Lauer. Wednesday morning Savannah Guthrie, “Today” show anchor, publicly announced Lauer’s termination and told viewers they were all “devastated”. Once this was announced two other NBC staffers came forward with claims against Lauer. These women, who will remain
anonymous, went to human resources and talked about how Lauer would call them into his office and claimed that he had a button under his desk that would lock the office door behind them. At this point several other women came forward. Variety then shares that Lauer allegedly gave one of his colleague’s a sex toy with an explicit note about how he wanted to use it on her. “He then exposed himself to another female employee” Variety shares “he then reprimanded her for not engaging in a sexual act”. Lauer would make comments through text or in front of other employees in reference to their performance in bed. A source told Vanity Fair: “This has been going on for months and months and everybody knew it and
it was just going to be which girl came forward and who reported it first.” After all of this was said out to the public Lauer came out with a statement against these allegations. “There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions” Lauer said. “To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry.” “There is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed” he continues. “Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I’m committed to beginning the effort. It is now my full time job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubled flaws.”

“We’re keeping students in mind that we have to be safe. Like, we’re students and there’s fun outside of school but we still have to be safe no matter what.” said Monica Delacria. The booth also contained pamphlets with information
on AIDS, the PrEP pill which is the one pill every day for HIV prevention, and information on the Syringe Exchange Program. HIV can also be spread by using HIV infected needles. With this program, dirty syringes are exchanged for ster-
ile syringes without taking a person’s name, information, or money. This program also provides HIV and Hepatitis C testing, substance abuse counseling, referrals for treatment, and much more.

The nonprofit organization, Self Help Graphics (SHG), was on campus Nov. 20th and 29th to teach Rio Hondo students about public art and indigenous resistance. The Nov. 20th lecture that took place in the Wray theater was lead by Joel Garcia, the program director for (SHG), taught students about accessible art that’s used to protest. This lecture was followed up Nov. 29th when Garcia and his team brought their Barrio Mobile Art Studio to teach students a hands-on way to create screen printing designs. The event was meant to occur from 10 am to 1pm, but due to popular demand it went on through 2:30pm. “It’s so much fun,” said Nicole Garcia, a Rio student. “I made a stencil of my niece’s
name because it’s the easiest thing I could do because I’m not really artistic. But other people went all out in their design.” Some students were there for three hours cutting out their intricate stencils while others tried to make a fast design. “I think the free tacos were a big incentive,” said Carolyn Robertson, “but it did get students out here creating and that makes it all worth it.” Robertson spoke about the free tacos offered to students after they’d screen printed their designs. The designs ranged from a stylized solar eclipse, to a wolf wearing headphones, and more politically driven designs like a seedling with the words “They thought we were seeds” across the bottom. Vet hunters project as well as the CSSB. V.I.P. worked to bring the Veterans and their families pillows, cloths, blankets, scarfs and hats: all made by veterans. 800 toys were donated by the Ahavat Torah Congregation, whose rabbi is a veteran of the U.S. military. Representative Solis spoke on the strength of the soldiers of the 155th CSSB and the importance of the event. “As a former member of the house and congress, i visited Iraq, i visited our troops. Some of our troops that were based out of the
armory that were based out of Azusa and long beach. I know how important it is[the event] because many of you give so much of your time, your seperated from your family, your loved ones, your children, your Theo’s and Thia’s and your loved ones: it’s a great day to celebrate all of you .” The event was a celebration of the men and women who sacrifice their time to ensure the country country continues to be a place of freedom.
While some of the military members helped serve food, everyone eventually tasted the meal prepaired by Mr. Ardi’s Catering, organized by the Hilda S. Solis.

Art is one of the most honest ways of expressing your feelings, and professor Miyo Stevens-Ganara is not the exception. Prof. StevensGandara just came back from co-showcasing an art exhibit in Tokyo, Japan. The exhibit, which was hosted by the Maho Kuboto gallery in Tokyo, was comprised of works from Prof. StevensGandara and her longtime friend Yurie Nagashima. “I’ve known [Yurie] for a long time, she’s a dear friend and I was so happy to do the show with her,” said Prof. Stevens-Gandara about the exhibit. “And Tokyo was great, it was beautiful and crowded, and the air was so clean. I even sold a couple of pieces so I really hope to get invited back.” Prof. Stevens-Gandara has always wanted to be an artist, she took an introductory art class at Schurr high school where she learned how to paint and take photos. “My art teacher got to meet Salvador Dahli, and I always thought she was so cool,” said Prof. StevensGandara. “It was actually during my Schurr days that I first got involved with Self Help Graphics. I was into punk when I was in high school and SHG had music shows in their old building and they always had cool art. And then later I found out that the sub I had for art class that taught me to hide curse words in my art was from SHG. I ended up taking art classes at SHG and now I work with them.” SHG was on campus last week with some do-it-yourself screen printing tutorials that had everyone coming to the lower quad. “It’s pretty cool to see everyone involved in that. Printmaking and photography are a great medium because they’re so accessible. You can make multiple copies, which makes it easy for you to give away and distribute and that’s very important because art should accessible to everyone.” The staff with SHG and Prof. Stevens-Gandara have a similar outlook about art, “It should say something. It’s why I don’t do abstract, because I don’t want to waste my time not saying anything. Like my embroidery pieces, for example, are about climate change. That’s a topic that’s very important to me, it’s something that’s always in the back of my head.” She spoke about her

And although she’s seeing success now, she made it clear that it wasn’t always so, “I’ve had moments when I doubted I’d make it. I never thought I’d quit, but I definitely felt like I wasn’t going anywhere. But when you’re an artist, you make art because you need to. And that’s something I tell my students. This could be you.” And that’s something that Prof. Stevens-Gandara wanted to make very clear,

because her students are important to her, she wants them to know that they can make it in art. “My parents were hesitant, not unsupportive but skeptical. I feel like that that’s the case with a lot of immigrant families. Parents want their kids to be in something that’s stable and that will make money,” said Prof. Stevens-Gandara. “[Art] makes me feel urgent about what I want to say and share it. But teaching has changed me. It’s really inspiring, I couldn’t be an artist without teaching.”

LCS Set to Be Franchised By Big Sports Names JAKE LAURELL

League of Legends is set for its North American LCS to return for the eighth time next year for the Spring 2018 split. This is time around the Spring split session is featuring 10 franchised teams with four of them being financially backed by four NBA teams. For all those that are living off the grid or just not paying attention to the internet, League of Legends is one of the most popular games on the computer of all time. Riot Games claimed that game’s 100 million users played the game every month according to Marc Merrill and Brandon Beck in Polygon article in May of this year. It is a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) focused on two teams of five competing around various objectives around the map. All players in the game receive gold along with experience that grants power ups for you four basic abilities for killing rival players destroying enemy towers, slaying neutral monsters, and slaying rival minions. The first team to destroy the opposing team’s nexus (home core) wins the game. The old LCS Esports first premiered in 2013 and operated in the same fashion as the Pro Soccer EPL (English Premier League). As in a team that performs poorly enough can get demoted to a lower league and have to
fight through a promotion tournament to be back into the EPL. A varying amount of
teams from eight to ten would compete against one another or a spot to the World’s Tournament The long-standing expected teams of the NA LCS that were expected and did return were the following: TSM (Team Solo Mid) is coming back in Spring 2018 ready to appease their many expectations to at least in the finals of that split of LCS. TSM is the only team in League history to go every world final tournament and to every NA LCS FInal. BAMTech, who is owned by Disney is responsible for distributing and developing Esports tournaments around Riot Games. BAMTech is obligated for any advertisement and sponsorship responsibilities. VP Warriors’ GSW Sports Ventures, Kirk Jacobs said in statement at Variety. com, “We are approaching our membership in this elite eSports community with respect and admiration — it’s our hope to bring our championship-sports roots to our new playing field and contribute to growing the league on a global level.”

Changing the World One Heartbeat at A Time

A recently developed material is said to mimic human heart tissue. A newly researched medical patch known as “Cardiopatch” has just been announced by Duke University. The research project leaders are Ilya Shadin, a biomedical engineering doctoral student atof Duke. Along with his Advisor Nenad Bursac, Ph.D., professor of biomedical engineering at Duke Uuniversity. The use of their new product is to help repair dead heart tissue in patients that have suffered from a heart attack. Normally, when a heart attack patient is recovering,
the heart does not recover properly. Unlike other organs in the body, once heart tissue dies, it does not regenerate the muscle cells needed to function. The wound does heal, but as scar tissue. Scar tissue doesn’t have the electrical activity or the elasticity as the normal heart tissue would, meaning it cannot expand or move as normally as cardio-muscular tissue. Using a heart patch as an alternative to normal healing, both helps the recovery process and provides smooth movements for the heart to work properly. The patches also release enzymes that help the growth factor to aid the tissue that hasn’t yet died. For this to work, the patches must be large enough to cover the recovering tissue,
and must be as strong and electrically active as the original tissue. If the patch fails to mimic the native tissue, it could cause discrepancies within the heart and create worse problems for people with Arrhythmia. Other methods are being put into the trial stage such as the injection of stem cells from bone marrow, blood, the heart itself in appropriate cases. Although there has been a significant amount of positive effects from these treatments, the mechanisms as to how they work is still a mystery. Fewer than 1% of the cells injected into the affected area survive and/ or remain within as Cardiac muscle cells. Doctors Bursac and Shadrin have made patches
from a variety of different lines of human stem cells. Some of the stem cells used are derived from artificially generated embryos that were forced into a pluripotent state. An array of heart cells can be grown using these stem cells: Cardiomyocytes, endothelial, fibroblasts, and muscular cells. Which are placed into a specific ratio then placed into a gelatinlike substance where they self- organize and grow into fully functioning tissue. Many improvements have been made since the start of the project. First, the patches were quite small at 1 c㎡ but gradually got bigger to their current size of 16c㎡. Now the patches are at an almost perfect size, but while improvements were made problems
did arise in the patches. The larger that patch was to grow more tissue the harder it is to maintain the functionality throughout it. Another problem was making the cells within the patches grow to full adult size, a process that takes years, and changing the time to a matter of weeks. More studies are to be held in the upcoming months for Duke university’s biomedical engineering division. As for the many problems they currently face, there is much to do and they are slowly making progress in solving them one at a time. The guarantee is that in the near future people will no longer have to worry about certain heart problems.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai called out Twitter at an event held by the R Street Institute in Washington on
Tuesday, November 28. Pai is calling out Twitter and similar companies, accusing them of censorship. “Let’s not kid ourselves, when it comes to an open internet, Twitter is part of the problem,” Pai said at the
event. “The company has a viewpoint and uses that viewpoint to discriminate.” In Pai’s mind, sites like Twitter is the real threat to an open internet because they pick and choose what is posted based on their politi-
cal agenda. Pai previously accused Twitter of blocking a video from being posted by Tennessee Republican Marsha Blackburn. The video promoted Blackburn’s pro-life message, but Twitter came
out to say that the video was not censored. At the R Street Institute event, Pai went on to say Twitter has a “double standard when it comes to suspending or de-verifying conservative users’ accounts as opposed to those of liberal users.” Pai called out the companies in defense of his plan to save the internet. His plan includes restoring the internet back to the legal framework established by Bill Clinton in the 1990s with a few changes. The FCC was urged by the Obama Administration to change Clinton’s framework in early 2015, and it did so. New rules were put in place, prohibiting broadband providers from regulating traffic. Others rules were enforced on internet companies, such as Netflix and Google. They could no longer pay to reach their customers faster than their competition. In his remarks on restoring the internet, in a document posted on the FCC website, Pai says his plan will “bring back the same framework that governed the internet for most of its existence.” Whether or not Pai’s plan to bring back the old framework would be beneficial is up for debate, there is surely net neutrality supporters who disagree with the FCC chairman.

Baby Driver I gotta say that Baby Driver was hands down my favorite movie of the year. I’d even go as far as saying that it is my favorite movie of all time. I don’t know what it was about this movie but I was hooked straight from the start of it all. The very first trailer got me hooked. There haven’t been many movies that make me, feel a stir of emotions like this one had. I was an emotional wreck all throughout this movie, rooting for someone then next thing hating them. Edgar Wright is clearly a talented director: he clearly put his whole heart and soul into this project. One of the things that I really loved about the movie ,which a lot of people did as well, was the music. A way I like to describe the movie is like “The movie is like the sound of music but with much, more car chases and guns”. I mean come on who doesn’t like the sound of music?This is one of the few movies that I can watch over and over without getting bored of. If you haven’t seen this masterpiece go watch it now!

Vice Principals American Gods Vice Principals stars Danny McBride as Neal Gamby. In the first season, Gamby is a vice principal obsessed with becoming the principal of North Jackson High. One of the problems Gamby encounters is the other principal, Lee Russell (played by Walton Goggins) also wants to be the man in charge. Eventually, Russell and Gamby decide to be friends, setting the stage for an epic season full of comedy and emotion. Vice Principals’ follow-up season was just as good, if not better, than the first. The show’s first season ended with a massive cliffhanger that left fans dying for the second season (I know I was). The second season plays out like an investigative story, stringing together comedy and drama perfectly; making viewers laugh, but also wallow in their emotions. One of the things I loved most about the show was the soundtrack. The showrunners did a good job at choosing music that adds emotion and substance to scenes. It’s a shame Vice Principals has come to an end

Based upon the same titled book written by Neil Gaiman, American Gods is a show set within modern day with the backdrop of all of our past and present mythologies are real. The main character Shadow Moon is recently released from prison only after he is told that his wife Laura Moon passed away a few days prior leaving Shadow estranged and astray. Leading Shadow to meet and take a job from Mr. Wednesday a mysterious figure that takes Shadow on euphoric experience that leaves the audience enchanted. Beyond the rich storytelling that drew many parallels to our current modern society to give its commentary on the American Dream. The show was a complete spectacle this season. Passionate, bold colors usually saturated the show featuring some mind melding visual effects told in a noir sense of light. This show visually this season were like having sex on acid for the first time. A experience where felt like you felt melded to the universe all while on overloaded stimuli only leaving you wanting more.

Photo Meet Get Out
The Instagram photography community hosted hundreds of photo meets this year. However, the best meet by far was hosted by local performance artists Butch Locsin. Locsin’s performances include smoke grenades and array colorful Dia de los Muertos skulls, tied together with matching suits. CNN contacted Locsin for an interview and a live performance. He quickly turned to his 80,000 Instagram followers and announced that he would be performing and hosting a photo meet. Tons of photographers from all corners of California attended and flooded the railroad tracks overlooking the LA River. Dozens of models and fire performers created a nonstop flurry of camera shutters. After four hours, the amount of smoke and fire breathing caught the eye of a police helicopter. Everyone was pushed off the tracks by authorities, and the location was quickly announced on Instagram. For many who attended, this meet served as an introduction to the greater photography community. The meet, most importantly, brought awareness to local artists and talent in SoCal.
If I am going to be completely honest, it took me months to see this movie since overall, I am not a huge movie fanatic that immediately needs to see a movie in theaters. I finally saw “Get Out” this month, and I have to say that it is a phenomenal movie. The directorial debut of Jordan Peele did not disappoint, and I am certainly excited to see what he will bring to the table next. The movie’s plot is more complex than typical horror movie plots since it takes horror but also ties in racism. One of the many aspects I found interesting in the way Peele directs the movie was the scene of the young couple driving to parents’ house where they accidentally hit a deer. They stop the car and Chris goes out to check on the deer and as he sees this suffering deer you can see that he starts to get very emotional. The whole movie is phenomenal for taking the seemingly mundane situation of the black boyfriend meeting the white girlfriend’s parents, and kicking the racist views to twisted, horrifying notch.

Ingrid goes West Kingdom Hearts The worst part of this entire film is that i relate to the character so much. The indie film Ingrid Goes West, starring Aubrey Plaza, Olivia Olsen and O’Shea Jackson Jr., is an sophisticated introspective into the idea of romanticising social media to the point of self destruction. In today’s society we have placed social media figures so much attention admiration and devotion that they become more than who they really are. This film explores the relationship between a fan( only looking for someone to love her like her deceased other used to do) and a Instagram star. The film pushes the idea of this corrosive environment created by the rise of social media stars, and accomplishes showing the self harm that comes with obsessing over people who don’t actually exist. The imagery of social media has been constructed to have a contrastive function of connecting people but also portraying a false image of themselves. At the end of the day, a huge part of content online can help connect people, but it’s no substitute for real human connectivity.
When it comes to soundtracks, whether they be from TV shows, films, or even video games, few come to mind when I think about which I enjoy listening to from time to time. One such soundtrack(s) I love listening to are those from a video game franchise called Kingdom Hearts. Ever since playing through the first installment of the series, I was captivated by the sheer creativity and whimsical beauty of the orchestrated music that was being played in the background. This past June, I had the pleasure of attending the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra World Tour held at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California. For myself, the music written by Yoko Shimomura for the Kingdom Hearts series is nothing short of beautiful. Each track captured the essence of the world and characters that the music is assigned to and listening to familiar tracks performed live had me in awe the entire time. With the imminent release of the third installment of the series, I hope that future performances are planned for us fans to enjoy.

The Voice Of The Night

The sound of anxious people waiting for the choir performance to start was great to hear outside the theater. The venue was at maximum capacity. There were people without seats who had to stand up to watch and listen. The moment the choir started singing the truth became clear, these great voices had come together to create blissful vocals and a sound that was ethereal. During one of the solo performances, the audience could immediately tell that the woman was nervous. During another solo, another choir soloist’s voice was vibrant as she spoke of her realization that she is beautiful in the eyes of her love and
that he has helped her to see the same of herself through her own eyes. Along with solo performances, there was a duet of two men center stage in the spotlight. They sang the song “Agony,” from the hit movie and Broadway play “Into The Woods,” where two men sing about their agony in finding love and how elusive the women they adore are. There was a mixture of song/storytelling/and comedy due to their movements and action whilst there time in the spotlight during their duet. To finish the night, there was an all Spanish song called “Misa Criolla” that was beautifully performed by the Rio Hondo choir. Although this was spectacular in itself, it would be wrong not to mention the great performance of the Ar-
royo High School choir, who was also there that Thursday night. The audience gave A standing ovation for an outstanding display of vocal prowess. The choir performances as a whole that lovely night, were impeccable sights to witness and listen to. The music was not only heard but also capable of being felt. Both the Arroyo High and Rio Hondo choir were ready to seize the night in all of its glory, and their voices echoed, making a mark on all who attended. Now the only thing to look forward to is next semester’s choir in the hopes that some students from Arroyo High attend Rio Hondo to be a part of a happy community of vocalists. Overall the did an amazing job.
started off slow, but maybe that was the point as the conductor started off the night by introducing the entire orchestra and giving a brief preview of what would be heard. George Wheeler, the conductor, is the director of the entire event. He spoke so passionately of his love for his art. He reminisced about his experiences in the Rio Hondo orchestra many years ago, and his lengthy career as a classical arts teacher. He plans to continue
teaching for many years at Rio Hondo, and open the eyes of students that share his passion affinity for the musical arts. Speaking to the audience before the performance was great as most spectators were eager to not only partake in the joyous occasion, but marvel as friends and family played on stage. The excitement was wonderful to see on the faces of those who were in attendance to witness to such beauty. Listening to Preludes brought

A Classic Night of Music

A beautifully orchestrated composition of the last couple centuries’ greatest classical artists, from the recent works of Ludovico Einaudi to the late great Johann Sebastian Bach. Throughout the performance, there were a few foul-ups such as technical difficulties and small off-key moments, but despite these minor mishaps, the orchestra did magnificent. The show
back the memory of a time where such music was appreciated by many, as those who in attendance listened happily and miming the keys in their laps. The compositions played on that night were amazing as each note was played with the sincerity and feeling similar to when they were first written as simple music notes. That Tuesday night was an awesome experience, to say the least, and it was very heartbreaking due because it lasted one hour. Further-
more, we as the audience, who were seeking a relaxing night, should look forward to more events such as the one described. Mr. Wheeler stated that he will have many more compositions and events planned for the future each semester at Rio Hondo’s glorious Wray Theater. They really out did themselves this time around, and I’m glad I was there to see this all unfold. You can tell that they all put their heart and soul into this.

No Crisis on This Earth: DC TV Better Than the JL Movie

Cw’s DC television Event, Crisis on Earth X, is the live action actualization of a comic book. This crossover brings the tv dc universe( Supergirl, the Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow) together to fight invaders from another dimension, a place where the Nazis won the war and containing alternate, mostly evil, versions of the characters. This two day event mini movie presents the essence of what comic books are: entertaining, inspiring and ridiculous. Comic fan or not, it is just so cool to see so many heroes together at once. With a superhero crew of around 20 heroes on screen at a time, there are so many powers, fighting techniques, weapons and costumes to take in. Even with a huge cast, the action scenes were fantastically choreographed and are able to give almost every hero at least one memorable moment. Of course it isn’t perfect, but the ideas it presents and the character involved imbed
a spark of imagination upon the viewer. While the story begins and ends, there are so many story threads left to explore, whether it be on the page, tv screen or a fan’s own imagination. A particular speech about never giving up because of the persistence of the human spirit especially can resonate in a viewer. Like a good comic book, there are a lot of things this event could of done different and/or improved upon. At times, the writing obviously misses opportunities or makes choices that clearly don’t make logical sense, but set up later events that the characters are going to have to deal with. What pushes the event, and the shows themselves, ahead of most of the Dc movies is that they take the time to get the audience invested in the characters so that they melodrama that they go through has more weight to it. The use of Nazi and a particular nazi love plot line, is awkward and frankly unnecessary. You can believe that it was done to have some sort of social relevance, but it nothing is really addressed and the show stays away from

Have you ever gotten goosebumps when looking at a honeycomb? Have the little holes in strawberries ever made you feel a bit queasy after taking a closer look? If so, you probably have a case of trypophobia. What exactly is trypophobia? The phobia was brought to light by American Horror Story’s newest season, AHS: Cult, and has been giving viewers everywhere the creeps. Trypophobia can be described as a fear or disgust of closely packed holes. Lotus seed pods, coral, bubbles, clusters of eyes, the aforementioned honeycombs and strawberries are some of the things known to trigger the phobia. Goosebumps, distress, sweating, nausea, body shakes, panic attacks and “feeling your skin crawl” are said to be symptoms of the strange phobia. The promotional posters for American Horror Story: Cult featured images that would cause someone with

to come in the seventh season of AHS. One of the main characters of this past season of AHS, Ally (played by Sarah Paulson), has trypophobia herself, and has been triggered by tiny holes in her food, masks, and by the sight of honeycombs.
While AHS: Cult has used trypophobia as one of its main tools to cause fear and disgust among viewers, it actually isn’t an officially recognized phobia. Healthline.com has stated that studies on the phobia are limited, and the research that has been gathered is unable

to tell whether it should or should not be considered an “official condition.” Despite not being officially recognized as a phobia, some research has shown that trypophobia causes real symptoms that can possibly affect a person’s everyday life if triggered.

The Reality of; Dying is more Bothersome

The worst part of depression is the realization that it never really gets better: so you have to. It’s like a acidic fog that invades your body and takes over like a bewildering attack from a relentless conqueror. A report by the National Center for Health Statistics found that the most taken form of escape, what the lamen call suicide, has increased by 20 percent since 1994, even more so with minority groups and members of the LGBT community. The idea of suicide disgustingly romanticised: a single action that could stop all the bad things from happening.

The phrase used to counteract this thought is the repetitively annoying phrase: “a permanent solution to a temporary problem.” I’ve often found it to be incredibly annoying and come off rather hollow when recited to me. A Mantra I’ve recited to myself a lot is “dying is more bothersome than living”. Anybody you met would be sad, any contribution you would of lost is gone, funerals are a pain for everyone involved and becoming another part of a percentage that grows larger every year. The first thought to counteract my mantra is : nobody would miss me if I died. And I call bullhonky on that because literally life would change without you. The things you do and say,
no matter how little or large, have long term ramifications that help pull together the fate of our reality. Hundreds if not thousands of success stories start from a single kindness from a stranger: why not be that stranger. Don’t do it because literally everything do you matters in some way or another, and that’s why the struggle to live matters so much. Humans are so complexly unique, living and progressing so specifically yet at the same time, doing the exact same thing. This contrasting nature is why life goes on. Although there are tons of humans in the world, there’s only one you.

Rainbow Six Siege is a first-person shooter for the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and on PC that had one of the rockiest launches a video game could ever see. But it has risen past that tumultuous beginnings to a radiant milestone future in a time where microtransactions seem to plague the gaming industry as a whole. What is Siege? Rainbow Six Siege is a multiplayer-focused shooter that is a one life round based where even one bullet from a sidearm of a pistol to the head, from any range can kill you. All thrown into this sandbox of enhanced destruction, verticality and map exploration not seen in many shooters. Two teams of attackers and defenders compete on a variety of maps from favelas to a luxurious cabin located deep in Northern Canada given a spectrum of tools and abilities to overcome one another. Attackers are given drones they can use to scout for information while defenders are given access to cameras located around the map, metal walls to fortify the area, and other accessories to slow down the attacking team. All while not only encouraging communication but making it mandatory to use voice communication in order to succeed because your character’s life is so precious and vulnerable to so many things. The possibilities of what you can achieve as a team or by yourself are truly infinite
because of the sandbox of Siege and all it features allowing the game experience to feel similar to popular games like Counter Strike: Source but to be completely in its own league. Siege was released December 1, 2015, and although not entirely canned by critics, the game’s reception was rather lukewarm. IGN gave the game a seven out of 10 where Metacritics.com still sees the game score of an average of 73. The early player number for the game were low and worry some for any launch of a game, especially for a multiplayer-focused shooter. When the game launched in December of 2015 the average player was under 10,000 on the PC platform alone. The game had numerous bugs and glitches that would make the game nearly unplayable. Siege even seemed rather lacking content considering it had no single player campaign and only feature four different types of game modes across its various launch maps. It seemed that this relaunch of the famed Rainbow Six series seemed to be dead in the water early. Two years later the game has 20 million registered players with a 2.3 million players on average login every day reported by Ubisoft in June of this year and another year of promised content coming with a zombie style game mode, Siege is now on the way to showing other triple-a developers on how to grow a player base. The turnaround began for Ubisoft Montreal with strategies that should have other developers taking notes. Ubisoft established early heavy
development of fixing the game to get Siege in a more consistent and stable form. Ubisoft earlier this year established a portion of the year Ubisoft called operation. Seeing thousands of bugs to be fixed, addressed latency and server issues, and even saw a change to operators change to hitboxes (An outline of your playable character that is able to interact with the environment.) Siege saw many free weekends around new DLC ( downloadable content) drops or discount days that allowed new players to come and try the game. The best part about this is Siege can remain the prime example and be a flagship in a time period where even a Star Wars game seems to have a hidden price-tag behind it. All Ubi Montreal has to do is fix its in-game grindy feel. And tackling this issue has a variety of options: Like making all operators that are DLC content either half-off or increasing the in-game rewards, since there is even currently weekly challenges you can try to earn that offer a reward from, making some kind of reward system for each operator you play With a hardcore group of fans fueling this adrenaline, nail-biting shooter, Rainbow Six: Siege to this day represents the epitome of a revived vibrant game. With millions of players worldwide logging in every day to get that headshot our defuse the next the bomb and clutch it out for your team, Siege is a Cinderella story waiting to be retold to the rest of the big publishers and developers across the gaming industry. And that the story is if gamers are treated like worthy customers they will flock to you in droves.
