East Los Angeles was filled with thousands of people who came together to celebrate their community at the 38th East Los Angeles Christmas Parade, Sunday, November 19. The parade route extended down Whittier Blvd, starting at S. Eastern Ave. ending at Goodrich Blvd. The people in the event consisted of equestrian units, folklorico groups, floats, car clubs, marching bands, cheerleader groups, celebrities and local/ corporate sponsors. Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors member for the 1st district, former RHC Board of Trustees member and US Secretary of Labor for the Obama administration, Hilda Solis has been a huge supporter of the event.

Rio’s Veteran Student Center Helps Vets Returning to School ALEX RODRIGUEZ Staff Writer

Rio Hondo’s Veteran Service Center opened its doors this past week to give Thanksgiving turkeys and goods to vets and families who are part of the Rio Hondo community. The Veterans Service Center has been helping veterans who go back to school for a long time and the counselor/coordinator for our veterans, Arely Castaneda has been doing everything in her power to make the Veterans Service Center feel like home after they’ve been discharged. The Veterans Service Center is a standing rock for the ones who have recently been discharged to help them with their educational benefits and a swift transition to civilian lifestyle. Their counselor, Arely Castaneda helps them utilize their education benefits to the fullest helping them be enrolled in the correct classes to help them achieve their degree for their career goals.

She worked with corporate sponsors such as Coke and Altamed while pushing the people of her district to participate in the celebration of their community. During the pre-parade event where major supporters of the parade could meet, Solis and a number of contributors pledged to the growth of the local communities and the people they serve. Officials from the City of Commerce, Pico Rivera, Montebello as well as others came and supported the parade. “This is an annual event that we actually have to resurrect. It really helps energize our community. Many of them can’t go to the hollywood christmas parade or other christmas parades around the la count. The Veterans Service Center has a great response of people helping them, last week cans were donated by the Rio Hondo veterans alumni committee that want to give back to the service center. Twenty turkeys were donated by Mark Tavera’s family and that same organization has been helping the veterans
each year. Mark Tavera has been fundraising throughout the whole year at Rio Hondo and he wishes to give back to his community. Tavera is a retired service member and he wants our service members attending Rio Hondo to be thanked for their service. The twenty turkeys donated by Tavera is
a show of gratitude and a way to pay back to the community in Rio Hondo. “There was bread, there was pastas, there was turkey trimmings for thanksgiving” said Castaneda. The Veteran Service Center are grateful to the Tavera family for their work and donations that have kept the tradition for three years.
The Lady Roadrunners soccer team faces off tonight at home, November 21, against Santiago Canyon College Hawks. The Roadrunners are coming into this game with a 3-1 victory over No. 14 ranked team, Fullerton College. Starting off that match sophomore captain, Madison Mater, scored a momentum launching goal against the Hornets. The Roadrunners came out kicking to ensure their win with two more goals following the first, the second one at the end of the first half and the third towards the closing of the match. The match improved the Lady Roadrunner’s record to 15-3-2 overall. Continued on page 15

Should We Be Giving
Thanks For What Was Once Taken?

With the holidays upon us and good times to be shared all across the board for a majority of Americans this year, we should place an emphasis on what really matters in such times: tolerance, love, and understanding. With that being said, the Thanksgiving that happened so many years ago in 17th century Massachusetts, was in many ways, the slow and systematic beginning of an end for the sovereignty of the Native American peoples that American government has bastardized for centuries. With waves of protests throughout the nation, Native American outcry has been met with predominant ignorance. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s temporary halt the construction of the $3.7 billion Dakota Access oil pipeline that is on reservation land, is but one of the ordeals of the Native American community today. Recognizing that the characterization of the derogatory term “Redskin,” and its normalization into mainstream culture by the guise of a Washington sports team name, is another. Advocating for the respect of native customs and culture, and being met with a mere disregard for the plausibility of the headdress as being nothing more than a hat, but another ordeal of the land-that-we-so-conveniently-inhabit’s native peoples. As history is only bound to repeat itself in all but one case it seems, we must ask ourselves, what happened to reciprocate the sentiment that shared benevolence that made the first Thanksgiving possible? Americans, for centuries, whether maliciously or unknowingly, have forsaken the patience and kindness of Native American peoples for far too long. Like the pilgrims were welcomed and provided with the skills that they needed to live in this new land, we should realize what real lies have been told to us for decades in regards to how we have respected the true “Americans” that were here before us. Today, in the land of the free and home of the brave, where Native American women are 2.5 times more

likely than any other women to be sexually assaulted in the United States, we should recognize that trifling with such a thing as sacred as tradition, may have drastic repercussions. For every Victoria’s Secret model that dons a Native American headdress on the runaway, ask yourself, would we cry-out if she opted to carry a crucifix, menorah, or scriptures from the Quran instead? With time we tend to forget the truth while attempting to make history sound as comforting to the ear and heart as possible, giving thanks for things once taken from those that were here before us, they should rightfully garner respect for anything that they have to say. Rather than bat a blind eye to such grievances, we should recognize that true solidarity comes from having awareness, which; during the holidays, more than ever, is the key to how we find ourselves even able to be giving thanks. As holidays are so often the time for reminiscences and reflection, when you tend to look around at all the loved ones in your presence, remember why you partake in such celebrations. Because of the virtue. Not because they have been historically fair and just to all. Partake in the sense of giving thanks and lovingly respecting people even on the basis of what differences of opinion they may have with you. As the pilgrims went to Plymouth to escape religious persecution and intolerance, where they were met by the natives with relative peace, we should choose to observe that this truly be the season for lending an ear to what things you may think are unimportant, or have never heard of.

Rio Hondo is set to launch for the first time in the community college’s history a program called RISE (Reach, institutionalized, Students, in Education) sometime next year. The program is meant to reach those affected by incarceration or been incarcerated themselves and help assist towards achieving their educational goals at Rio. Joe Louis Hernandez, a success coach, who graduated from California State Long Beach University is running the program at Rio. Hernandez himself gangbanged, sold drugs, was a delinquent, lived the life of the streets but after going to jail at very young age, he decided to better his life through education and go back to school and come up with a way to pay it forward. The program is meant for those students that have been incarcerated or has in their history been incarcerated as a guidance tool and safe harbor to all those students with concerns about education or college in general. The program’s goal is to help those students transition from the institutionalized life to trying to better their lives through education. “Every success coach
has a cohort of students they work with it, as in my case I am developing my cohort. I am developing a service for the students I will be working with. At the same time, my job will also be checking up on these students follow up with them, help them in any way, share my experience, and try to connect these students with as many resources as possible.” Hernandez started this program because of his background and where he came from, he felt like there weren’t many places that he could get help or information about education at a college. “ I was locked up when I was younger. I lived the epitome of you think of someone incarcerated. I did drugs, I gangbanged that is who I was. And so going from that to now being the first generation who has been incarcerated I understood the worries of not knowing how to navigate through education and the stigmas attached to what I was. I understood the apprehension about attending a big college. And all of my friends I couldn’t really get advice from them because none of them were going through the same process as me. No one to tell me that hey, maybe you should join the EPOS club or anything like that to help
me.” Hernandez hopes to build this program to be located at as college campuses as possible along with trying to reach to as many formerly incarcerated students as possible. Especially since outreach for these types of students is not very abundant in California. “There is a currently a big movement going on right now in this field. There is project REBOUND which is at the Cal. State level of schools, then there is The Underground Scholars Initiative... let me put like this around here in LA county we got Cal State Pomona, Fullerton, Long Beach, Dominguez Hills, and Cal State LA. Out of the five schools, only three have a Rebound program and two of them are in the process of obtaining a Rebound program. UCLA has a program/ organization for formerly incarcerated students. Out of 12 to 15 community colleges, only four of them have a program for students that have been incarcerated. And one of them you have to get sent to. And most kids don’t go straight to a four year and even less that get locked up.” For more information about this upcoming program contact Hernandez or faculty.

The Associated Students of Rio Hondo College (ASRHC) hosted a Friendsgiving event this past November 20th, feeding 100 students a classic Thanksgiving dinner. Students lined up in front of the board room, where the event took place, starting at 4 pm. Many snuck out of class and excitedly awaited for the door to open. ASRHC members worked tirelessly decorating and preparing for this event, hoping
to give the students a fun way to start off the holiday season. Everything from mashed potatoes, stuffing, turkey, ham, and even pumpkin pie was served. Students were ushered back to the student union after receiving their food so they can enjoy A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving while eating their meal. Community service senator Lorena Gonzalez even enlisted the help of her sister and nephew, who happily helped serve the hungry students. “We planned to feed 100 stu-
dents, but I think next year, if we can host the event in the student union, we’ll be able to feed more than that,” said ASRHC president, Martin Covarrubias. “But this was a good turnout, I’m so happy that all these students came.” The setup was a tad on the impractical side since the layout of the boardroom didn’t really lend itself to serving a full Thanksgiving meal. Hopefully next year the event can be hosted in the student union, making it viable to feed more students.

Second Annual AVANCE Student Showcase DIANA JUAREZ Staff Writer

The AVANCE program hosted its second annual student showcase in the lower quad this past November 16th and 17th. The two day event hosted the works of 278 students spanning from 11 different counseling 101 classes that are part of the AVANCE firstyear program. Ryan Rivera, an AVANCE program student spoke at the event, giving the crowd some uplifting words of encouragement by sharing his personal story. “AVANCE helped me learn about on campus resources. I came to Rio not fully knowing what I wanted to do. I had a vague idea that I wanted to go into journalism because when I was in
high school I was going to interview someone,” Rivera said to the crowd. “It was a rush just preparing for that interview. And the great thing is that Rio is a unique campus. It’s small, but it’s a close knit campus. And joining the Associated Students of Rio Hondo and joining El Paisano taught me to be a part of something.” The summer bridge program and the AVANCE program have helped many students like Rivera. The success of the student showcase is obvious in the numbers. Counseling 101 professors created the event three years ago, with just their two classes. Last year, the inaugural year, the event was made up of 10 classes. Barbara Salazar, Dean of Basic Skills was very
excited about the event. “We had to split it up into two days. Last year we made the mistake of having all the students showcase on the same day, it was chaos. What you see now is what we’re aiming to keep. There’s been a 120 student increase this year, we had to split it up so half show their work today and the other half tomorrow,” said Salazar. A dramatic increase in participation, but one that is fully welcomed as it means that the AVANCE students are taking the program seriously. “The goal is to get students to Rio and into a career,” said Rivera. “It has helped me so much, not just with finding a career but in finding resources. For exam-
ple, if you sign up for five to eight resource workshops you get priority registration for the next semester. You do this every semester and you don’t have to worry about registration. But the real gain is information at the workshops. You learn about programs that the campus offers.” Maribel Leon, the First Year Success Center coordinator echoed the sentiment, “We want to prepare first year students for their career. Twenty-three summers of punk, screamo music all over the country will be coming to an end next summer and attendees tweeting about it want to make the last cross-country festival count as it is coming to an end with the best lineup possible. Lack of attendance was the main reason for the departure of the warped tour stated by Kevin Lyman the founder of the warped tour. The annual summer traveling punk music festival began in 1995 with big names like The Deftones, No Doubt, and sublime making the lineup twenty-two years ago creating a new generation for punk music listeners to go and experience a whole new counter-culture of music. In twenty-eighteen the Warped tour will be expanding their final goodbyes as their last full cross-country tour. The White House requested $44 billion relief plan for regions hit with hurricanes is receiving criticism from lawmakers a being not enough. Christmas Parade
Garfield High School’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps(JROTC) were the first group to march down Whittier Boulevard. While they did display their disciplined marching, they would take time to stop & show of their drill positions. They represented the strength of commitment, heart and perseverance that makes up this county. Our offices worked for over a year with the Whittier Boulevard Merchants Association, with the Chamber of Commerce and our sponsors to help put this together,” said Solis. boxer and former East LA native Oscar De La Hoya: with celebrity Marshals Art Laboe (famous for his time on the radio) and Danny Trejo (known for over 200 films). Senator Ricardo Lara was in attendance along with other celebrities who also partic-
ipated. entertainment. While the parade was an exhibition of the best and brightest that the community has to offer, the festival gave the people who attended a more interactive experience, as many who were in the parade were also set up at the festival.

The Long Awaited Update Has

After four years of fun playing Warframe, going through server updates, community events, community interaction and community gifts, or logging a multitude of hours racking and spending billions of credits (ingame currency), comes the update of the ages. The first ever free roam world that the game warframe has come out with, is all the hype to tenno’s Worldwide. What is Warframe? The video game Warframe is a Massive Multiplayer Online game(MMO), a free to play cooperative third-person shooter developed by Digital Extremes a computer and video game development studio. Within the world of Warframe, you play as a character known as Tenno, a Tenno is a being from an ancient race of warriors who have awoken from centuries of cryogenic sleep. You wake up and are placed smack dab in the middle of a huge celestial war between three major factions. First, the Grineer a race of militarized but deteriorating matriarchal human clones made of metal, blood, and bred for war. Second, is the Corpus, a mega-corporation with highly advanced robotic and laser technology based solely on making profit throughout the solar system. Third, is the Infested who are hell-bent on the spreading of a virus known as technocyte that envelops its victims turning them into disfigured creatures that have a hive mentality. While all these factions battle one another, there is one more ancient

force that drove them away being absent in this new era of war. Throughout the entirety of the video game you can play at your own pace, whether it be Player versus Environment mode (PvE), in which you do missions on various planets that range in variety from neighboring planets such as Earth, Mars, Venus, to planets much farther like Pluto, Eris, Uranus etc. In addition to missions, you can embark on quests which are similar to missions, the only difference being that they provide a small fragment of storyline to advance your knowledge on the current setting you occupy within the game. The quests not only provide players with knowledge but give them subtle moments in which they must make choices that alter how the story plays out. If this
threat in which all will join forces to fight against as a whole, they are known as sentients. The Sentients are an overly advanced alien force made up of mechanical beings that were driven away centuries ago, which now return from Tau their place of refuge. The company Digital Extremes, in its earlier years, created the idea for a game called Dark Sector which was the original inspiration for Warframe. Back in 2008, the idea was starting to launch into the development stage, but before it was able to take flight, the company scrapped the whole project. About four years later in 2012, Digital Extremes announced that they were coming out with a game called War-
frame. In October of 2012, they had already released its first closed beta of the now popular game. By March of the following year, the beta had opened up to the public for the sake of field testing the gameplay. The company decided to share their creation with the world of console gaming. In November of 2013, the release of Warframe had hit PlayStation. Soon to follow, was a release on Xbox in September of 2014. This was big news for many who didn’t
have a computer platform to play the game. The game since its origins has been free to play, where the only requirement is it’s mantra, “Ninjas Play free.” Warframe has seen a multitude of updates in the past four years since its original release, but none strike the hardest to the Tenno community like its most recent update. Dubbed “The Plains of Eidolon,” this is the first complete free roam interactive setting that Digital Extremes have created and given to its loyal community and fanbase. While software updates are occurring constantly because of glitches and game bugs on the new plains. Besides these minor details, the new map holds many new and exciting thing such as fishing, though tedious and time consuming it is a wonderful experience. There is also a mining action where you must scour the plains looking for minerals buried in stone hidden in caves. The almost unlimited altitude and activities given to you by Lotus, there is more than enough to do while on Eidolon. Though before you enter the plans you must pass the village of Cetus. While in Cetus you can speak to shopkeepers to procure various items to assist you in the plains, this is also a mingling zone for other Tenno. Within Cetus you may group with other players or continue solo into the plains. Now we will all have to wait to see how the team over at Digital Extremes will out-do themselves next.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission plans on killing the Obama-era internet fair treatment rules in a December vote. People familiar with the plans said to the media that the FCC may decide to abandon all the rules. This threat to net neutrality is far from new since politicians and internet service providers (ISP) alike have fought to end the restrictions since they were first implemented. These Obama-era rules demanding fair treatment of web traffic
were passed in 2015 and kept broadband internet providers from giving or selling faster internet services to others or slowing down web traffic. Although Democrats and technology companies support net neutrality, companies such as AT&T Inc. and Comcast Corp. stand to gain since without net neutrality they could charge websites money to be kept on the “internet fast lane.” This could potentially kill off business, big and small alike, as well as keep start-up companies from existing altogether. Some examples of what companies have done before net neutrality was a thing that existed include AT&T
censoring a Pearl Jam concert stream because singer Eddie Vedder was criticizing then-president George Bush, Verizon blocked text messages from reproductive group NARAL because they were “controversial,” AT&T limited the use of FaceTime to “encourage” its clients to get more expensive data plans. But the public has not taken this lying down, as millions of them have contacted the FCC about keeping net neutrality. Websites such as Tumblr have been known to spread awareness to its users, making it difficult for the government to undo net neutrality laws. That all has changed when
Verizon bought Yahoo who had previously bought Tumblr. With Verizon as it’s new owner, Tumblr has not pushed net neutrality news the way it used to, in fact, many of Tumblr’s users feel that the website has gone as far as to block posts regarding any net neutrality news. FCC chairman Ajit Pai has been trying to get rid of net neutrality since he was appointed earlier this year. He has, as of yet, to make good on his word, but the December vote will prove decisive considering the Republican majority is likely to win a vote regardless of what Pai proposes.

You remember that three-eyed fish in The Simpsons? The one that was caused by being exposed to all that radiation? Well, some interesting news happened a group of scientist in India managed to create something just like that! But instead of having a fish it was a beetle with three functioning eyes!
You may be wondering how this even happened. Was it a group of mad scientist looking to further an evil agenda or a group of futurist trying to help? Well, it wasn’t anything like that unfortunately, they were intending to do this on purpose in the name of science. It was actually a piggy back off a study that happened all on accident. “There’s no single gene for an eye, a brain, a butter-

The original study was actually done on a dung beetle and they managed to give it a third eye and where the horn is at originally. Of course, replacing the horn that was should be there. The fact that they were able to essentially turn off and on certain parts of the cells was groundbreaking. The development of abnormal body parts is called ectopic organs and it’s used to help scientists study new physical traits on animals and such. This study has also been done on other things as well including fruit flies. They managed to grow ectopic organs on the wings and legs of the fly. The study done this time around with the beetle had the same results as the last time. The beetle had lost its horn in the middle of its head and was replaced by a third eye. That was fused with both its left and right, the effects were all pretty much the same. It was functioning well as they predicted. This is huge because this study alone is the forefront to being able to grow organs for all sorts of purposes. Once this is perfected it can be used for soldiers who come back to have a new limb, people who lost one in an unfortunate situation. The possibilities of this research could help so many lives.

In a fresh round of attacks, the hacking group known as Anonymous lays claim to taking down over a dozen neo-nazi websites in the U.S. An Anonymous hacker that goes by the twitter handle of @Anonyinfo stated that this most current attack was caused by the recent Unite the Right marches and the anti-white supremacist marches in Charlottesville where a woman died. Some of the sites taken down include texaskkk.com, cnkkk.net, and njoathkeepers.org. The sites were down at the time of the release of the statement and the Anonymous hacker said that “continuous attacks” were imminent. “This is simply related to ongoing events. Our message is simple if we catch your organization taking part in acts of domestic terrorism in the name of white supremacy, we’re coming for you,” the Anonymous hacker said. A bold move given the harrowing events in current months as hate crimes against the Muslim, Jewish, and nonwhite communities are on the rise in the U.S. alone. Movements like the Alt-Right have tried to normalize their behavior to the mainstream media, they are “rebranding their movement to appeal to the public and try to make genocide/ethnic cleansing a debatable topic” said the Anonymous hacker. But such movements aren’t an exclusively U.S. problem since the rise of white supremacist groups is a problem in countries such as Argentina, Poland, and Germany to name a few. “We’ve had plenty of anons contribute to the operation worldwide knowing this is a US-based operation; the fight against fascism is global, so we may consider expanding our operation to work with Anonymous groups in their own countries,” the hacker added. Only time will tell if Anonymous can coordinate an attack strong enough to rock the foundation of these hate groups.

Despite some of the uncertainty in the beginning with same-sex marriage, some believing it will somehow divide the country, Australia came together as a country in voting yes for marriage equality. Results released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed 61% of the population voted to allow same-sex marriage and 38% voting against it. Although this vote was only part of a government survey, it proves that Australians do want change in their country. The Parliament of Australia now has to introduce the bill for same-sex marriage, that will in hopes be done before Christmas this year. “Now it is up to us, here in the Parliament Of Australia, to get with it. To get on with the job the Australian people have tasked us to do, and get this done, this year, before Christmas,” said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Advocates of same-sex marriage celebrated together all over Australia and watched news broadcast of the survey results together. Many have been waiting for years for same-sex marriage to be legal. Chris Lewis, 60, told The New York
Times, “This is our proudest moment as gay and lesbian Australians. Finally, I can be proud of my country.” Alex Greenwich, a state lawmaker from New South Wales and the co-chairman of Australian Marriage, an advocacy group, told The
New York Times, “Shows that Australians have truly come together in support of their gay and lesbian mates and have said that everybody should have the freedom to marry.” But not everyone is celebrating this change. Robert Carl Katter, an independent politician, is a member of the House of Representatives. In an interview with Australia’s Hot 91.1 FM, he stated samesex couples already had the same rights as heterosexual couples. “If you’re living with somebody, you automatically have all of the duties and responsibilities of marriage — so nothing at all changes,” he told the station. “The parliament spent an entire year occupied by this stupidity and not one single thing changes.” Katter believes that all the time and money spent on same-sex marriage legalization was a waste and Parliament should be paying more attention to Australia’s
high unemployment, crime and lack of water. In the same interview with Hot 91.1 FM, he also stated, “And what has the federal vParliament done this year? It’s been running around on gay liberation, or whatever it’s called. I don’t know what it’s called. But my country is burning and the people who should be putting out the fire are, in fact, pouring the petrol.” Regardless of one’s view, Australia made history with allowing same-sex marriage legal. “They voted ‘yes’ for fairness, they voted ‘yes’ for commitment’ the voted ‘yes’ for love,” said Turnbull.

Joe Louis Hernandez lived quite the outstanding life. From gangbanging and drug dealing at very young age to now close to obtaining his master’s degree, he has climbed the rollercoaster of life to the very top and has not left yet. Hernandez grew up all around LA. At a young age, he grew up around all the neighborhoods with the infamous notoriety like Compton, Watts, South Gate, and Bell Gardens. “Every new place we moved to was just a new hood. Just another place where there is no thought of hope.” At the age of 12 is when Hernandez first got into the street life from his cousin who was two years older than him. Hernandez’ cousin was the one that was into tagging and the gang life and Hernandez wanted to follow in his cousin’s footsteps. It quickly escalated from tagging to gangbanging, fights and doing drugs. Leading Hernandez to be locked up locked up at very young age. “So at 12 I was hanging with tag banging crews. Growing up I moved to a lot of places. But me growing up every place we moved

to was the hood. When you grow up in these types of environments and you don’t have aspirations, you have no one telling you can go to college you… Like I expected to go prison before going to college. So with that, it progressed from tagging to gangbanging. And it stemmed from wanting that little bit of notoriety from seeing your name fon up in the streets, then doing tagbanging then you know, full on gangbanging. And that is the around the first time I got arrested for the first time for firearm possession.”
Hernandez did not learn from this experience as went right back to the doing the same things and was doing a lot of drugs. Soon he was released early for a light sentence he quickly got arrested again for the same crime. He expressed how he recalls having the obtuse mindset of being proud of being locked up like it was some sort of badge of honor. After serving a harsher sentence and attending a drug rehabilitation program, Hernandez expressed that he wanted to turn his life around going to back to school to
finish his high schooling in a homeschool program. From there he started to attend college at Mt. Sac. Because the transition from the life from the hood to the life of education can be daunting he struggled at first. Even though it was an obstacle his hustling mentality kept Hernandez pushing forward leading to finish his bachelor’s in Rehabilital Services in two years and now two out of the three years under his belt for his master’s program in Science & Counseling with an emphasis on Student
Development & Education. Hernandez ended up at Rio through a his mentor. He needed internship hours and his mentor recommended him to her mentor here at Rio. After Hernandez shared his story, he was referred to Dr. Munoz where after a series of interviews was hired onto Rio the faculty of January this year as a success coach. “Me being a Latino male I know that I was f***** from the gate. I know the system never worked in my favor. The statistics, where I grew up, where I was born, everywhere I lived, the structure the statistics were never in my favor. Because statistically speaking I am the outlier. Out of 10 people that get incarcerated six of them will back into the system. When I was young I wanted to be a f****** G. And today I am. I am community college graduate. I am a college student. All this is because I chose to ask for help.”

Center stage, the lights shut off and the sound of waves fill the air. The lights flick back on and two British soldiers stand as a man, bareback, screams as the sound of a whip cracks the air. The lights dim and upon white sheets a picture of maps displays the setting of tonight’s show. The play chronicles the lives of convicts and the officers that oversee them. Within a South Wales British colony, a courtroom setting is displayed in the background as the actors and actresses get into position. The stage is set and the lights turn on to illuminate the scene at hand. All the officers and their superiors gather to discuss the fate of the convicts. An argument ensues among the officers about various decisions and ideas made amongst themselves. Decisions are made to no avails, as the scene changes once more revealing a lieutenant who sits alone writing to his wife who is back in England. He speaks to her of his longing, and how he kisses the
picture of her that is tucked away in his desk often. Just then, another character walks in speaking about a past mistake. He pleads with the lieutenant that he was not in the wrong for the death of a man he once knew long past. After the lieutenant is finished listening he explains that he wasn’t in the wrong and sends the man on his way to relay a message to the governor of the colony. The message is to ask if it would be alright to stage a comedic play with the convicts as the actors. Once the governor hears of this, he is intrigued with the idea, because it is a kind of reform. After this series of events, many things happen. Auditions are held by lieutenant Ralph Clark who slowly gains cast members as the convicts mingle with one another talking about the play recruitment. Due to rumors of the play going around Mary Brenham a beautiful convict being dragged into the audition room by her friend and fellow convict Dabby Bryant. Dabby and another (convict who had previously entered the room trying to seduce Lt.
Clark, known as Meg Long) exchanged an array of foul language toward one another. Meg is quickly put to the side by Dabby as she speaks to the Lt. about Mary’s ability to read and how she and mary would be a great addition to the play. The Lt. asks if Mary would demonstrate her reading skills to him just to be sure, during the course of this scene, Dabby constantly interrupts the demonstration. After some time, another more aggressive character barges in, Liz Morden who also doesn’t like Dabby along with Meg. Though her demeanor is different to that of the other convicts, she holds herself at a higher standard mentally as if she wasn’t in the same circumstance as the others. After this, the scene changes once again to reveal officers as well as a Major and the Governor speaking of how the play isn’t a good idea. Passionately yelling at one another from Major Ross and Lt. Clark about their views on the play idea and making crude jokes with heatless chuckles within the meeting of officers. Toward the end of this
scene we as the audience come to find that not all the soldiers are as passionate or even interested in the discussion of the play. That was just a fragment of the first act with many, many, other scenes that involved more actors and actresses that were performed Beautifully. To continue any further would be to butcher the brilliance of the play itself. Watching the two and a half hour play on a Thursday night was one of the greatest things after many classes during the day. Overall, the play was a mesmerizing spectacle to behold. The performances in act two were all around fun. The sense of setting created by the stage crew and prop builders was impeccable, not to mention that the props needed for the scenes were brought out by the actors and actresses themselves. The actors and actresses themselves had amazing attitudes backstage during the intermission. It was great to see all the smiling faces and prepared mindsets of the performers. The play itself wasn’t a small feat to overcome in the least. The production would
not have been the same without the small gestures and ad-libbed moments throughout the whole play. The look on the audience’s faces during scenes when a character would yell, or cry, or be seductive was priceless. To see the impact that the scenes had because of the actors in it, was more incredible than anything. From the actor’s perspective, they are who they portray down to the core in each scene. While watching, you can’t help but feel as if you are in the scene with them. The thunderous voices, vigor, and sheer passion would surely make their recipient’s body shiver with chills. When a character would show sorrow, sympathy, sadness, or seduction, they would make the audience feel those exact same emotions. Beautifly done to all cast and crew involved in the making. The Script was read and portrayed with the utmost sincerity. The overall journey that each character had to go on until the end was outstanding. The audience went on the journey with the characters. The play of “Our Country’s Good” was beautiful to watch.

Millions of men and women of all ages look to UCLA for top talent, high education standards, and professionally driven students. That all has changed for the Beverly Hills and Belair adjacent Campus, home to three college basketball
players accused of stealing from the Louis Vuitton luxury goods store in China. On the morning of their return, President Donald Trump continued to boast over twitter about his talks with the Chinese President in an effort to spare the three alleged black male thieve’s from 10 years of prison. Stealing from a much-beloved store owned by luxury brand behemoth Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy in China is highly discerning amongst Asians who treat luxury
goods and their stores like money and top banks. In a culture obsessed with quality, design, and state of the art technology, the same tech that caught the three men through a complex display of human personnel, cameras, and video recording equipment. As a purveyor of fine goods, we wanted to get ask LV’s competitors how they would have handled the situation. We reached out to head of west coast security operations for Gucci America,
Jon Kim. I asked him how this could have been prevented, and how his team handles such incidents. He failed to respond. Last week, when the students dropped down at LAX, they were surrounded by reporters and cameras begging for questions and the perfect shot, they said nothing, minutes away from the conference, the Head of UCLA Basketball stated that the young men would be immediately and indefinitely suspended from the team,
leaving years of hard work and bright futures up in the air. A press conference was held at UCLA where the former players apologized and admitted guilt, knowing they let family and friends down. The amount of prospects who have UCLA on a pedestal look at the incident as an embarrassment and well so, as one of the nation’s best, the college boasts some of the brightest professors from not only the homeland but from around the world.

Doing the League Justice?

If there’s something I can truly appreciate about this film, it’s the exuberance that it emits onto the audience. While you could complain about the common, albeit basic, cinematic frame of the film- the fact that everyone seems to be so excited to be involved means everything. While I’ve been placing emphasis on the excitement the film gives, it does lack a lasting thematic depth that would usually make a film memorable. The past DC films have been defined as forgettable(man of steel), being lost in it’s own sophistication( Batman v Superman), unconnected and messy (Suicide Squad) and standard but socially defining(Wonder Woman). This Film may lack a bold, defining message but it’s heart and excitement turns it into one of the more enjoyable films of 2017. As someone who grew up on Dc comics/tv shows, it’s so hard not to be biased on the film. And luckily, the films has so many faults that I could never overlook them. While each character has their moment, the three who steal the show are Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne (Batman), Gal Gadot Diana prince (Wonder Woman) and Jeremy Irons Alfred Pennyworth. In the film, Bruce introduces the idea, that his hatred for superman in the last film, was incredibly misplaced and stemmed from a lack of understanding of the Kryptonian. The idea presented is that Superman did not only have god like abilities, but mostly would put those aside to make actual connections with people and (mostly) live in the constraints of society, with bruce shutting himself off from humanity to focus his bitterness and regret on the crime that festered within it. Gadot’s Wonder Woman admits the fact that she has been a bit irresponsible, a similar detachment to humanity due to the pain they had experienced earlier in their life. She faces the fact that she is a symbol of hope, similar to superman, but has almost been afraid to jump back into the world she once swore to protect. Jeremy irons, while having one of the smaller roles in the film, interacts fantastically with any of the cast members and gives quick welcoming reprieves from the dramatic narrative the film tries to create. The rest of the cast seem
used to it fullest, as the fight scenes don’t use it’s character as best as they could, and the character’s don’t make too much impact with their body language. If there’s a favorite moment in the film it’s near the end where all of the justice league members stand together. For a DC comics fan, seeing them all together in live action, standing while the sun shines on them, literally made me cry. Although my need to see them in live action has been sated by the Dc Cw shows, seeing all of the major staples of the Dc heroes stand together was a dream come true. The film tries to do so much in the two hour time limit and has so many concepts to introduce that it’s one big tease. Hopefully they can expand on everything started in the film, which needs to be done because Justice League made $94 million domestically during its opening weekend. The Office is about to get parked and wrecked.
A lot of shows these days can drag on and become awkward as they progress: especially shows who last longer than five seasons and seem to be unsure of where their characters are going and the direction of the show in general. While The Office is an amazing show that deserves praise, there are quite a few issues with the show that objectively puts it below Parks And Recreation in terms of overall quality. The main difference between the two shows is the aforementioned progression of the characters and its story. While the character progressions isn’t as debateable as it seems, the story progression definitely is. From the beginning, the Parks and Rec. people seemed to know exactly where they were going with their story, and even when they didn’t, the story was so strong and appeared so stable that it at least appeared planned. Not only that, but just the entire progression of the series is a lot more solid. The Office has a lot of episodes that are framed awkwardly, especially after a certain manager leaves the show. While neither show has a clearly defined ‘main character’, it’s made clear that the one character that is the main focus or anchor, of each show is Amy Poehler’s Leslie Knope and Steve Carell’s Michael Scott. If there’s one aspect of Parks and Rec. that fails , it is its casual use of the Mockumentary Style of production. This this method of shooting, where the show is shot like

it’s a documentary, is used better and is more pivotal in The Office. Although the Parks and Rec. crew do not utilize this style of shooting well, what they do is transcend it. There is this air of performance that goes on in The Office, how each character in the scranton office feel like they’re putting on a show rather than be who they are. It’s a sort of false performance that helps distance the audience from these characters and although it disappears every once in awhile, it is consistent. The characters from Parks and Rec. are so heartwarming and relatable because they are so earnest in their feelings. They only acknowledge the camera when they are setting up a situation, with the rest of the show portraying them to be basically ignoring the cameras. While they ignore the cameras, they pour their heart out to let the audience really know what is going on in their head. This is known as Cinema Verite, translated to truthful cinema, developed by ethnographic French filmmaker Jean Rouch improvisation and an active camera to find ‘truth’ in reality. All this style of shooting helps with the character development and story progress in Parks and Rec. and in a way works against the characters in The Office. While both shows are incredibly memorable, hilarious and heartwarming, Parks and Recreation is able to connect to it’s audience that will make it a true staple of this age of television.

Just like life, it’s not about the destination it’s about the journey and the lessons you learn along the way. In a nutshell that’s The Office. Before I state my reasoning on why this show is better than Parks and Recreation, Parks is a great show and you should watch it as well, because both are good in there own ways. But in my opinion The Office, dominates over Parks and Rec. The Office sure may have had a slow start in the beginning, but it really picks up after the first season. It’s one of the few shows that hits every note it’s funny, romantic, serious the whole show is an emotional rollercoaster. It displays love in so many different ways. With all sorts of random characters. With pairs of people, you’d never guess wind up together and some you saw coming from a mile away. Everyone wants to find their Jim And Pam, and I could say I think I found my Pam. The way Jim would look at her and treat her is how all of us guys should treat women, the whole aspect of their relationship is perfect. The way the characters are written is beyond perfect. The way they all are, you fall in love with all of them without even realizing it. No show has ever done that where I love every character from Michael Scott to Toby! Worlds greatest boss, Michael Scott. Don’t we all wish we had a boss like him. He’s so cringey that it is actually funny. Through the way he doesn’t pick up on social cues
and feels that everyone loves him. Kind of like ourselves when we refuse to take no for an answer. Even with all his stupid humor every now and then he’ll hit you with that life lessons and that’s what makes Michael Scott such a great character. Let’s not forget our favorite farmer Dwight K Schrute. The weirdness behind him is next level, but for some reason, we can never get enough of him. And why is that? Maybe because he’s a little like us, just weird enough to be cool. The way he’ll talk about comic books, sci-fi shows it’s almost hard not to love him. The show portrays the theme of love and family throughout every season. Just like the old saying goes “Friends are just family you meet along the way” Even if it’s with coworkers, you never know who you’ll meet, who you’ll fall in love with, or who you’ll love to pull pranks on. The evolution of each character and the way they all live there own lives, but somehow go back to one another because they do become family. The last few episodes of the final season really hits home and made it end on such a high note. It’s made me cry a few times. It’s great because of the humor, but most importantly because of the message, it relays across. This is one of the only shows that I’ve gone back and seen over five times, for a show to do that to anyone, it has to be good. It was great at connecting with you on an emotional level, something that Parks and Rec attempts to do but falls flat, due to how much it shoves it in your face. And that’s why I know The Office is better.

Something I don’t like would have to be the preparation for all the food and the cleaning up afterwards.
Something I really dislike about Thanksgiving is the food coma after. Something even worse would be when there’s not enough food for everyone. So either way I guess it’s a lose-lose situation for me.
I don’t like cleaning up after the people at your house. There’s so many family member coming over which means there’s going to be a lot of dishes washed.

It seems like everytime you go on social media, there’s always that one person that post every detail about their life. It can range from going to a concert, to having dinner with friends, or even just sitting at home, no matter what the cause is, you’ll end up seeing it. Millennials are at this trend where in order for it to be believable we need to somehow prove it to our followers or people we socialise with. Hence the phrase, “Pics or it didn’t happen?” In reality, we owe nothing to those people. Whether we want to show them everything about our lives or if we don’t, there is no need for us to photograph every single event. Photographing every moment takes away from actually living in the moment. I rather live for the moment than look at a photograph after and not remember
how it felt to be there. Not taking pictures constantly of what it is you’re doing doesn’t make it less of a significant moment. If I am going to an event with a friend, then I want to know that I put my full attention on them and the event going on. That way we can talk about everything that happened that day. Something a photograph can’t do. I feel if you’re able to really enjoy the moment then you’re always going to remember it without having to take a photo. If having to take pictures is more important than giving someone you really care about your attention, then are you really there for them or just the aesthetics of it? As a society I don’t think we should expect pictures of a person’s day-to-dayactivities.What they do or don’t do should not be on top of our priority list. A person should not have to confirm their experiences to people who wouldn’t believe it happened in the first place.

Rio Hondo’s Women’s Volleyball Team Comes Up Short at Home Against Mt. SAC MADELYN GASTELUM Co-Sports Editor

Tuesday November 14, Rio Hondo’s Lady Roadrunners Volleyball team gave final league win to the Mt. Sac Mounties, 3-0, leaving them with a 1-7 record to end the season. Starting out the match the Roadrunners gave the Mounties the momentum with a fast point run leaving them struggling to gain a lead. Throughout the first game the team had a hard time closing the point gap that Mt. Sac created for themselves with their quick offensive plays. The Mounties capitalized on the speed of the game and the lack of fight that our Roadrunners started out with. Team captain Sara Harding commented, “we weren’t really playing together as a team.” she also said that there were some players engaged but not as a whole. “To get the win we need everyone to be engaged, not just every girl on the court but every girl on the sidelines as well.
Because to win as a team we need the whole team.” The Lady Roadrunners ended that first game with a little momentum but failed to finish leaving them with a 15-25 score. The fire they had was taken again by Mt Sac giving them no room for a win in the second game, coming out with the same score 15-25. Going into the third match the Roadrunners were ready to fight back. With a rough start they managed to gain a lead on the Mt Sac Mounties for the first time during the match forcing them to call a timeout at 18-16. Mt Sac regrouped themselves and gained a point lead but the Roadrunners didn’t let them take it. Fighting back the roadrunners pushed points until the mounties pressured them and fought to 25. This closed out the third game at 25-23. Though a tough lose Rio Hondo ended on a positive note as the team gave a happy send off to the sophomores and a thank you for their time in the program.

USC and UCLA Battle for LA

The week 12 meeting between crosstown rivals USC and UCLA was a very intriguing football game. It was an NFL showcase between two of the best college quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen, who are candidates for the Number 1 pick if they declare for the 2018 NFL draft. USC came out on top with a 28-23 win over their Los Angeles rivals at the Coliseum. Both teams were fighting to save their season as UCLA had an opportunity to become bowl eligible by winning notching what would have been its sixth win. USC was playing for a berth in the College Football Playoffs. The USC Trojans were out of the playoff chase after getting clobbered, 49-14, at Notre Dame last month. The Trojans did clinch a berth in the Pac-12 title game, which will take place on December 1 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California after recording a 38-24 win at Colorado last week. USC will face the
top team from the Pac-12 North division which is between Washington State and Stanford. The trojans will have to beat the Pac-12 North Champions to keep themselves in the College football playoff race. This marquee game of the college season: USC’s Sam Darnold and UCLA’s Josh Rosen,two of the top draft prospects, were up against each other for the first time in their college careers. The game found a way to define both player’s careers: Josh Rosen has the stats and Sam Darnold got the 28-23 win. Rosen demolished USC’s defense as they gave up 501 total yards which was USC’s worst mark since 2015. Rosen completed 32 of 52 passes for 421 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Sam Darnold improved to 19-3 as the starting quarterback for the trojans. He completed 17 of 28 passes for 264 yards without a touchdown, threw an interception and ran for a touchdown. As Darnold and Rosen are likely to depart for the NFL, he will
do so with a Rose Bowl win and possibly a conference title. USC’s win was meaningless for the trojans(10-2, 8-1 Pac 12) as they already booked their ticket to the Pac-12 championship game. As the Ucla Bruins will go into next week’s game against Cal needing a win to qualify for a low level bowl. Josh Rosen’s time at UCLA was disappointing as he was injured for half of the 2016 season, and the bruins defense hasn’t helped out the offense very much. These two quarterbacks will always be compared as they made this rivalry very intriguing. The Trojans win over UCLA resulted in yet another firing of UCLA coach Jim Mora. With one game remaining in the bruins schedule, they decided to fire head coach Jim Mora, who has been with the program since the 2012 season. Mora began his tenure at UCLA with success as they had back to back ten-win seasons in 2013 and 2014. Despite having one of the best college quarterbacks in Josh Rosen, the bruins are 5-6 playing for a bowl game.

Lady Roadrunners Soccer Team continued
Going into the second round the Lady Roadrunners have prepared themselves for a tough opponent as Santiago Canyon is ranked No. 6 with a standing overall record at 18-2-1. Captain Madison Mater gave her thoughts going into the match. “We know that they’re a tough team but if we do what we need to then we will get the results we want.” This is the first time that our Lady Roadrunners will be
facing off with the Hawks so they don’t have any previous games to go off of when deciding how to execute their game plan. When asked this Captain Madison Mater said, “We’ve continued to work hard in our practices in preparation. We know that we just need to focus one match at a time.” The match tonight will decide who advances into the regional final at the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
