Seneca Nation offering vaccine to neighboring school districts BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY The Seneca Nation is reaching out to school districts near its Ca araugus and Allegany territories to help make COVID-19 vaccines accessible for eligible students and staff. The Nation recently notified officials at Gowanda, Silver Creek, Lake Shore and Salamanca school districts that eligible students and staff can make vaccine appointments with the Seneca Nation Health System on target dates over the next two weeks. “The recent rise in cases in the region, particularly among people 19 and younger, makes the urgency for everyone to get a COVID vaccine even greater,” said Matthew Pagels, Nation president. “Keeping our children and our schools safe has to be a priority, and we know that vaccine access in rural communities has been a challenge. The Seneca Nation is proud to work with our school district partners to do what we can to help get the vaccine to as many people in our community as possible.” In Salamanca, the Seneca Nation Health System is scheduling appointments for the Pfi zer vaccine this

week, and appointments for the Moderna vaccine during the week of April 26. “The Salamanca City Central School District is grateful for the vibrant partnership with the Seneca Nation and the Seneca Nation Health System,” said Robert Breidenstein, district superintendent. Throughout the course of the pandemic, the Seneca Nation has collaborated with the distinct to ensure the safety of students andcommunity, Breidenstein said. He said allowing Salamanca staff and students to have access to the vaccines at the Seneca Nation Health System demonstrates the strength of the entities’ relationship and the support of our community. “We are safer today because of our mutual commitment to public safety,” he added. For eligible students and staff in the Gowanda, Silver Creek and Lake Shore districts, the Seneca Nation Health System in Irving is scheduling appointments for the Pfi zer vaccine on select days during this week. Appointments for the Moderna vaccine can be made during the weeks of April 26 and May 3.

Borrello wants to protect Lake Erie from wind turbines ALBANY — To protect the ecology of freshwater lakes, clean water supplies and national security, state Sen. George Borrello has introduced legislation to place a moratorium on the building or placing of permanent or semi-permanent wind turbines in bodies of freshwater in New York state. “I dra ed this legislation to protect our freshwater lakes from becoming industrialized by massive wind turbines,” Borrello, R-Sunset Bay, said. “Our greatest natural and environmental resource is our freshwater lakes. These lakes, and the communities that cherish them, should not be sacrificed on the altar of the boondoggle green energy agenda.”

“Strong partnerships like the one our district enjoys with the Seneca Nation are paramount in building strong, healthy schools and communities. Borrello also noted that the Department of Homeland Security has invested millions in high-tech radar systems to protect New York’s border along Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. “These systems are designed to detect drug smugglers, human traffickers,

terrorists and others attempting to enter our country illegally,” he said. “The radar ‘shadow’ created by industrial wind turbines will undermine the reliability of this important national security system and may render it useless.” Borrello said his legislation is also designed to protect lakeshore communities from being abused and steamrolled into accepting industrial wind farms off their shores they don’t want or need. “These projects won’t benefit the communities where they would be located in any way, they will only harm them,” he said. “Upstate already has 88% zero-emission electricity generation. We are already

green. The industrialization of our lakes is designed to benefit the New York City area, where more than 70% of the electricity is generated from fossil fuels.” Borrello said the Accelerated Renewable Energy Growth and Community Benefit Act, which he voted against, works to silence local communities opposed to these industrial wind projects. “I will not allow the governor and his radical supporters to destroy our beautiful lakes, quality of life and economy to support a false narrative that will do nothing to truly address climate change,” he said. “New Yorkers deserve be er than this crony capitalism disguised as environmental policy.”

The Seneca Nation Health System began receiving vaccine doses for Nation members from the federal Indian Health Services in January. To date, the Health System has administered nearly 3,200 primary doses on the Nation’s territories and more than 2,300 Nation members have been fully vaccinated. The school district partnerships are the latest effort by the Nation to help make the vaccine accessible to residents in neighboring communities. In March,

the Nation worked with Cattaraugus County officials to conduct a series of primary and second dose vaccine clinics for County residents at the Seneca Allegany Events Center inside Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino in Salamanca. In all, approximately 1,500 Ca araugus County residents were fully vaccinated at the Seneca Allegany clinics. “The ba le against COVID-19 doesn’t begin or end at the borders of our Nation,” Pagels said. “We are one community, and we can only win this together. Helping our neighbors who live, work and go to school alongside us is part of that effort. We continue to urge everyone to make a vaccine appointment as soon as they are eligible and able to do so.”

Three “Teen Vaccine” clinics planned for May 1 ERIE COUNTY, NY – Aªer securing a supply of Pfi zer COVID-19 vaccine late last week, the Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) has scheduled three COVID-19 vaccination PODs especially for 16- and 17-year-olds and their families on May 1. Pfi zer COVID-19 vaccine will be available for teens ages 16 and 17; Moderna COVID-19 doses will be available for anyone age 18 and older. Sites will be SUNY ECC North in Williamsville, SUNY ECC South in Orchard Park, and McKinley High School in Buffalo. “We reached out to local

pharmacies and New York State Department of Health aªer initially hearing that local health departments would not receive more Pfi zer vaccine until early May,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein. “Each vaccinated person gets us one step close to the end of this pandemic, and with 16- and 17-year-olds eligible for Pfi zer vaccine, we are very eager to coordinate these special PODs for these teenagers and their families.” “This is a crucial service for our department to offer before events like proms, graduations and other celebrations this spring and

summer,” Dr. Burstein continued. “Vaccination for these high school students also provides another layer of protection against COVID-19 in school, sports, work and household se ings.” ECDOH will communicate Pfi zer COVID-19 vaccine availability to school districts and private schools at scheduled ECDOH clinics. In the future if additional Pfi zer COVID-19 is available, ECDOH will consider planning PODs at school locations. Parental consent forms for 16- and 17-year-olds will be available before May 1 electronically and on site at ECDOH clinics.
