Our only hope: Infinite chaos ensues in ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’

A new addition to the Big Bang Theory franchise puts one of its least-likely characters front and center, ready to be a hero. “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” a multiverse-hopping sci-fi comedy, premieres on HBO Max Thursday, July 23. New episodes of the 10-part series drop weekly on the streamer.

Kevin Sussman (“Lessons in Chemistry”) reprises his role as bumbling comic book store owner Stuart Bloom from the originating series, this time with a sci-fi twist. A new device built by his buddies Sheldon (Jim Parsons, “The Normal Heart,” 2011) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki, “Roseanne”) catches Stuart’s eye. It looks unassuming, like a modified air conditioner, but it is more fragile than it appears, Stuart learns, when he breaks it and brings on an armageddon of alternate realities.

As it goes in any shop, you break it, you buy it; this time, though, it is reality as we know it that is broken. Forced to become a hero, Stuart steps into the web of universes he has set off and tries to find a way to restore order. Though he is not the typical kind of person who volunteers for a brave and dangerous journey, he is assured by a reliable source (an alternate version of himself) that he is the man for the job.

Also starring in “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” are Lauren Lapkus (“Good Girls”) as Denise, Stuart’s girlfriend; Brian Posehn (“New Girl”) as geologist Bert Kibbler; and John Ross Bowie (“Speechless”) as the antagonistic physicist Barry Kripke. Together, the four friends travel across the multiverse in search of a fix that will undo the apocalypse. It’s a tall order, but the collective knowledge of sci-fi

that this troupe of lovable nerds possesses makes up for any lack of action-hero bravado.

Recurring cast members include Ryan Cartwright (“Bones”) as Kyle, Josh Brener (“Silicon Valley”) as Trevor and Tommy Walker (“Daredevil”) as Gary. “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” was co-created by Chuck Lorre (“Two and a Half Men”), Zak Penn (“The Incredible Hulk,” 2008) and Bill Prady (“Gilmore Girls”), who also executive produced and wrote the series for HBO Max. Kyle Newacheck (“Happy Gilmore 2,” 2025) executive produced the show and directed multiple episodes.

of characters we’ve come to know and love from ‘The Big Bang Theory.’”

This spinoff uses the world of “The Big Bang Theory” in an entirely new way. Placing the characters in otherworldly settings rather than fleshing out their backstories is new territory for the franchise. Lorre spoke about the big swing last June during the Banff World Media Festival, saying, “You know, for me in my career, a big production number was two people sitting on a couch, drinking coffee! This is different.”

Lorre continued, “This is trying to incorporate some of that world of science fiction/fantasy into a comedy. And I’m completely out of my element, which is what I wanted. Which is what I was hoping to do, something that I had no experience with. And maybe I can learn as we go.”

“Furious” - Season 1 (Hulu — July 27, Series Premiere) In this adaptation of 1987’s “Black Widow,” Emmy Rossum stars as FBI agent Alice Black, who tracks a female serial killer (Lola Petticrew). The two find a surprising bond developing between them as the pursuit unfolds.

“The Wild Robot” (July 24) Roz, a service robot, is shipwrecked on a nature-filled island. Surrounded by trees and wildlife, she must learn how to adapt to her new habitat, and begins bonding with her new animal pals. One of Roz’s new friends, an orphaned goose called Brightbill, becomes especially important, as she tries to protect him from ferocious predators, forest fires and more.

“Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston” (July 14)

Golden Globe winner Tom Hiddleston takes part in scripted, evidence-based cinematic sequences that follow the lives of real Romans caught in Vesuvius’ path. Following a teenage apprentice, a businesswoman and a Praetorian Guard, Hiddleston pieces together how each confronted disaster.

“BeddyByes” (Available Now)

Offering a soothing transition to bedtime, this children’s animated series sees two best friends – MeMo and BaBa – travelling across the ever-dreamy Planet BeddyByes. Along the way, they meet new friends and come across familiar faces, like Gramma Leeba and The Yummies. Noah Melo, Phoebe Dalton, Dawn French and Paul Tylak round out the series’ cast of voice actors.

Tom Hiddleston leads docudrama detailing

“Snowpiercer”Seasons 1-4 (July 22)

In a near future where Earth has become an uninhabitable tundra, a luxury train populated with the world’s only remaining humans circles the globe, waiting for a thaw that may never come. After several years onboard the never-ending rail journey, the lowest-class “Tailies” revolt against their living conditions and the train’s strict class divisions.

“Dante’s Peak” (Available Now) Led by Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton, this 1997 action-disaster flick sees volcanologist Harry Dalton (Brosnan) traveling to Dante’s Peak, Wa., to investigate activity at a nearby stratovolcano. Harry warns the locals that a disaster is incoming, but his warnings prove meaningless until the volcano inevitably erupts. Elizabeth Hoffman, Jeremy Foley and Jamie Renee Smith also star.

“Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie” (July 24)

Starring Matthew Johnson, Jay McCarrol, Jared Raab and Ethan Eng, this 2025 film expands the world of “Nirvanna the Band the Show,” following Matt (Johnson) and Jay’s (McCarrol) plan to book a show at the Rivoli. But when it goes horribly wrong, they all accidentally travel back to the year 2008.

“Do Not Enter” (Available Now) A group of urban explorers, The Creepers, heads to a supposedly-haunted hotel in search of an epic jackpot. The Creepers enter the building confidently, but it’s not long before they’re fending off deadly rivals and supernatural creatures, leaving them to ask: how much is $300 million really worth?

“The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” - Season 3 (July 19)

Following the events of “The Walking Dead,” Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) washes ashore in France. With a cloudy memory, he tries to make sense of his new surroundings, and begins a journey to try and find his way back home. New connections complicate Daryl’s plan, making him question where he truly belongs.

“Ransom Canyon” - Season 2 (July 23)

Based on the series of Jodi Thomas novels, “Ransom Canyon” returns for its sophomore season. Set six months after the events of last season’s finale, this season has Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly) mulling over where her heart belongs — in New York City or with Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) in Texas. Patricia Clarkson and Steve Howey join the cast this season.

Experience ancient Rome through “a fusion of cinematic scripted drama and investigative documentary storytelling” (per Disney) with “Pompeii: Out of Time With Tom Hiddleston,” a three-part docudrama exploring the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius making its debut on National Geographic Wednesday, July 22.

As its title suggests, “Pompeii” sees Golden Globe winner Tom Hiddleston (“The Night Manager”) at the series’ helm, taking part in scripted, evidence-based cinematic sequences that follow the lives of real Romans caught in Vesuvius’ path.

“Following a teenage apprentice, a powerful businesswoman and a mysterious Praetorian Guard, [Hiddleston] pieces together how each confronted impossible choices as disaster loomed. As the volcano awakens and the countdown to catastrophe begins, the evidence converges in a gripping race against time to uncover who survived, who perished and what determined their fate,” Disney’s press release explains.

With the expert help of archaeologists, historians, geologists and disaster experts, “Pompeii” challenges long-standing beliefs about the volcano’s infamously deadly eruption, offering a realistic and captivating look at Pompeii’s final hours.

“Saturday Night” (July 25) On October 11th, 1975, a television dynasty was born as the first-ever broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” aired across America. In the 90 minutes leading up to “LIVE,” however, chaos reigns above all else, as writers, comedians, producers and musicians clash over the impending show. Starring Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner and Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, among others.

“Wicked: For Good” (July 20) In this 2025 sequel, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) has seen her reputation ruined. Despite being known as the Wicked Witch of the West, she marches forward in her battle for Animal rights. Glinda (Ariana Grande), meanwhile, has found power as the Wizard’s (Jeff Goldblum) spokesperson, and hopes to bring Elphaba back to her senses.

“72 Hours” (July 24)

When he’s accidentally added to the group chat for an upcoming bachelor party, 40-year-old Joe (Kevin Hart) decides to tag along for the adventure. Surrounded by twentysomethings, he attempts to reconnect with his youth, have a little fun and save his career in the process.

Seeing a continued partnership between Hiddleston and executive producer Kevin R. Wright (“Loki”), “Pompeii: Out of Time With Tom Hiddleston” premieres Wednesday, July 22, on National Geographic, before streaming the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.

Gena Rowlands feels the ‘Influence’

Gena Rowlands was widely renowned as one of the finest actresses of her generation, with a number of her best roles supplied by her husband, actor-filmmaker John Cassavetes. That certainly was the case with “A Woman Under the Influence,” the memorably raw 1974 drama that Turner Classic Movies shows on Tuesday, July 21, as part of its tribute to independent productions. Cassavetes’s work and approach virtually defined “independent,” to the extent that an honor in the annual Film Independent Spirit Awards is named for him.

Both he and Rowlands earned Oscar nominations for the story of a deeply troubled housewife (Rowlands) whose increasingly unpredictable behavior becomes problematic for her husband (Peter Falk) and children (Matthew Labyorteaux, Matthew Cassel, Christina Grisanti). She’s eventually committed to an institution, and her adjustment to the schedule during her several months there makes it difficult for her to adapt to her home life again when she’s released. Film-festival exhibition helped draw attention to the picture, which Cassavetes distributed himself by contacting theater owners.

“Dragnet” (MeTV, Mondays through Fridays): One of the first television dramas to get a full series revival continues in repeats of its later iteration, which ran on NBC from 1967 to 1970. Creator-producer Jack Webb reprised his role as famously stiff-upper-lipped Los Angeles police detective Joe Friday, teamed here with Officer Bill Gannon (a pre“M*A*S*H” Harry Morgan) in probing a variety of crimes, all of which could be solved in a half-hour. Webb extended his distinctive production style to other series including “Adam-12” and “Emergency!,” and it fueled a well-known 1968 “Tonight Show” sketch (“The Copper Clapper Caper”) featuring Webb and then-host Johnny Carson.
