Cover Story The end zone: ‘All American’ wraps up with eighth season By Sarah Passingham Baseball is America’s pastime and FIFA fervour is in full swing, but no other sport brings out fan-demonium quite like the gridiron. The legendary Friday night lights of high school football fields have nurtured generations of professional-level talent. With the high stakes of each game’s outcome, not to mention the possibility of making a play that could write one’s own ticket to the big leagues weighing on young athletes’ shoulders, the level of drama in the world of high school football is sky-high. The final chapter of high school football drama “All American” unfolds, beginning with a special two-hour premiere on Monday, July 13, on The CW. A one-hour special, “All American: The Final Season Special,” celebrates the series that’s already surpassed the 100 episode milestone, is immediately followed by the season premiere. The show’s eighth season will be its last; its 13 episodes

detail a single week in the lives of the beloved cast of characters that make up the Beverly and Crenshaw crew. From The CW, the upcoming season spans “a week that will have them wondering if everything they’ve been through over the course of their lives has prepared them for this moment. A week that will ultimately reunite old with the new, friend with enemy, and alter the course of each of their futures forever.” Starring in “All American” are Michael Evans Behling (“The Queen’s Jewels,” 2025) as Jordan Baker; Greta Onieogou (“Heartland”) as Layla Keating; Bre-Z (“Empire”) as Tamia “Coop” Cooper; Osy Ikhile (“Citadel”) as Cassius Jeremy, Nathaniel Logan McIntyre (“The Equalizer”) as Kingston “KJ” Jeremy and more. College recruitment is the center of everyone’s world, whether it is affecting Jordan’s coaching duties at South Crenshaw High or KJ’s laser-focused vision on becoming an

NFL quarterback. Only a small fraction of high school football players make it pro and with that self-imposed pressure, KJ is at a boiling point when he confronts his father Cassius in the official trailer. While Jordan is in charge of the South Crenshaw High program, Cassius is a coach at Beverly Hills High. After an unexpected introduction at school, KJ wants answers, telling Cassius, “pretty sure I just met your replacement.” This final season focuses on what “All American” has always been about, “football, family and friendship,” per The CW. Olivia (Samantha Logan, “13 Reasons Why”), heavily pregnant with twins, puts one of those pillars into perspective in the trailer for the upcoming season. As the characters of “All American” face their futures, Olivia reassures Layla, “family is fear and joy tied together.” Logan returns as Olivia in guest actor capacity this season, as does Daniel Ezra (“The Running Man,” 2025) as Spencer James.

The love story of Spencer and Olivia was a throughline of the series, with the happy couple tying the knot, packing up and moving across the country after Spencer signed with the fictional NFL team, the New York Bobcats. Showrunner and executive producer Nkechi Okoro Carroll (“Found”) reflected on the experience of creating the final season of “All American” with the cast and crew of the show in a statement, thanking the viewers for their loyalty to the drama though its entire run (and a spinoff series, “All American: Homecoming,” which aired for three seasons from 2022 to 2024). Carroll said, “what we realized was that, just like when your kids grow up and finally leave home, this wasn’t goodbye ... it was a tear-filled ‘I’ll see you soon.’ So, to our fans who have rocked with us faithfully for over a hundred episodes, we hope you enjoy this final season as much as we enjoyed making it.”
