The Navajo Tribal Police work a missing person case involving a Navajo teen in Season 4 of “Dark Winds,” premiering Sunday, Feb. 15, on AMC and AMC+. Zahn McClarnon in “Dark Winds”
Cover Story ‘Dark Winds’ in L.A.: Navajo police seek missing teen in Season 4 By Dana Simpson At times when violence and dehumanization are rampant, some in positions of power may feel it easiest to follow orders, while others may choose to focus their attention inward. Others still will get up every morning, step out the door and use their lived experience to fight for others — regardless of how they may be perceived by the aggressor. Lt. Joe Leaphorn, the leading character in AMC’s 1970s-set series “Dark Winds,” is among the latter category. Portrayed by “Longmire” and “Reservation Dogs” actor Zahn McClarnon, Leaphorn has spent the series’ first three seasons facing and fighting everything from murderers and robberies to crimes of hate against the Indigenous people in his Navajo County community. Now, as Season 4 begins, Leaphorn must leave the comfort of Kayenta, Arizona, and venture more than 600 miles southwest to Los Angeles in the hopes of bringing home a Navajo teenager who disappeared from her boarding school without a trace.
“Dark Winds” Season 4 premieres Sunday, Feb. 15, on AMC and its streaming platform, AMC+. Just weeks ahead of the show’s Season 3 premiere in March 2025, AMC announced that “Dark Winds” would also return for round four. The decision to renew so early came with little surprise to many, given that the series boasts a whopping 100% score on the RottenTomatoes. com Tomatometer (critic ratings) and an impressive 76% approval rating on the Popcornmeter (audience score). Even with all the critic and audience attention, however, McClarnon is likely to have been among the most excited for the show’s renewal. “I’m looking forward to exploring and inhabiting the character of Joe Leaphorn once again in Season 4,” McClarnon said, as reported by Collider, adding, “I’m excited to make my directorial debut on a show that means so much to me.” Already credited as a series star and executive producer, McClarnon adds another feather in his cap this year as he makes his directorial debut in “Dark Winds”
In Focus “Paradise” - Season 2 (Hulu — Feb. 23, Season Premiere) Xavier (Sterling K. Brown) searches for Teri (Enuka Okuma) out in the world and learns how people survived the three years since “the Day” in this new season. Back in Paradise, the social fabric frays as the bunker deals with the aftermath of Season 1.
Season 4 Episode 2, reportedly titled “Bikee’ Doo Eedahooziideegoo (Toward Their Unknown Paths).” Although no specifics have been shared regarding the episode itself (no doubt to avoid spoilers), fans of the series created by Graham Roland (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”) can be sure that the action will already be in full swing by the episode’s Feb. 22 air date. And while much of the “Dark Winds” discussion has rightfully centered upon McClarnon in preparation for the eight new episodes awaiting release, his won’t be the only familiar face in Season 4. Firstly, “Blood Quantum” (2019) and “Twilight Saga” star Kiowa Gordon returns as Jim Chee. (After all, what is Leaphorn without his Chee?) First introduced to viewers as a young FBI agent working undercover in Kayenta, Chee has become an integral part of the Navajo Tribal Police force. In the official Season 4 trailer released by AMC, Chee is seen welcoming fellow NTP officer Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten, “Frontier”) back
to the force and sparks are flying. Even sharing just a few seconds of screen time in the promotional material, it is clear that much of Season 4 will be spent exploring Manuelito and Chee’s feelings for one another. Joining the prominent roster of new cast members in Season 4 is Franka Potente (“The Bourne Identity,” 2002) as Irene Vaggan, who is described by Wirth as a “villain” with a “really complex backstory” rooted in World War II-era Germany and fostering a strong family history tied to the Nazi Party. Obsessed by stories of “cowboys and Indians in the West” when she was growing up, Vaggan is positioned as a major obstacle on the route to solving this season’s big case in LA — and she has a special penchant for Leaphorn. Also joining the cast are Isabel DeRoy-Olson (“Three Pines”) as Navajo teen Billie Tsosie; Chaske Spencer (“Blindspot”) as crimering recruiter Sonny; Luke Barnett (“Tonic,” 2025) as FBI special agent Toby Shaw; and “Bosch’s” Titus Welliver as LA crime boss Dominic McNair.
