Pumpkinville is not just a local favorite fall destination. It was ranked No. 6 in the KidsOutandAbout.com survey of the Top 20 places to take kids around Buffalo. It’s also a winner of New York State’s Agri-Tourism Business of the Year. The brainchild of Dan and Diane Pawlowski, Pumpkinville is the largest fall tourist attraction in Cattaraugus County, drawing more than 100,000 people during its sixweek run. The 200-acre farm is also the oldest, continuously working pumpkin farm in New York State. While in festival-mode from Sept.12 through Oct. 31, 25 acres are turned into a combination fairground/farm market/feasting venue for kids and grown-ups of all ages. There are dozens of free games and activities, including a Singing Chicken Show, Perky the Talking Pumpkin, Farm Animals, Corn TeePee, Storyland, Kiddie Spookum Barn, a Train Play Area and more. There’s also a brand new feature this year: “Punchin’ Pumpkins Race.” This creative race involves navigating through a maze, stopping at four spots to punch a pumpkin and then racing for the finish line. With the purchase of an activity wristband ($11 Mon.Thurs.; $12.50 Fri.-Sat.), you can also spend as long as you want on the Pumpkin Jumpin’ Pillows, driving Farm Pedal Carts, taking a country hayride, riding on the Cow Train or getting lost in a six-acre Mix 96 Corn Maze that, from above, looks like a carving of the Mix 96 radio station’s logo. Individual activities are $3.75 each.

IRS Call SCAM The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s OfďŹ ce has issued a warning to its residents about scam artists reportedly posing as IRS employees. The scam begins with a resident receiving a call from someone reporting to be an agent of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The caller informs the resident they owe money to the IRS and demands it be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest or suspension of a business or driver’s license. Often these calls will be “spoofedâ€? so that the victim’s caller ID supports the fake claims. Sheriff Timothy S. Whitcomb would like to remind everyone to be wary of phone calls that use scare tactics, as they often are scam artists attempting to gain personal information to defraud their victims. If such a call is received, residents are encouraged not to give out any personal information and to call their local police agency. Be a PAL to Friends with Food Allergies Ellicottville Central School Nurse Kimberly Watt, RN, shared the following information from the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) regarding how children can help friends avoid exposure to foods that may make them sick. For more information, visit www. foodallergy.org. Did you know that 1 in 13 kids in the United States has a food allergy? That’s about two kids in every classroom. For kids with food allergies, even a tiny amount of the food they are allergic to can make them very sick. The most common food allergies are to milk, egg, peanuts, tree nuts (like walnuts and almonds), soy, wheat, fish and shellfish (like shrimp and crab). But a person can be allergic to any food! Since food allergies affect so many kids, it is good to learn how you can “Be a PAL” (Protect a Life) to a friend with food allergies! Here’s how:
Know that food allergies are very serious. It’s hard to believe that foods you eat every day can hurt others, but it’s true! If someone with a food allergy eats something they are allergic to, they can get very sick and sometimes have to go to the hospital. If a friend or classmate has a food allergy, don’t tease, bully or make fun of them. Tell an adult right away if you see other kids picking on someone with a food allergy. Don’t share your food with friends who have food allergies. You can share jokes and laughs with your friends with food allergies, but don’t share food. For kids with food allergies, sharing food can be very dangerous. So don’t offer kids with food allergies anything from your lunch or snack. Why? Because it may have something in it that could make them very sick or hurt them.
Wash hands after eating. Washing your hands with soap and water after you eat is very important. It’s a good way to clean off any food that is on your hands. Help all of your friends and classmates have fun together! There are lots of ways to have fun without food! Listening to music, playing board or video games, making crafts, going for a bike ride and playing sports are just some of the cool things you can do together. This way, everyone stays safe and has fun! If a friend with food allergies feels sick, get help right away! If your friend feels sick or thinks they may have eaten something they are allergic to, tell an adult right away or dial 911! They will make sure your friend gets help and gets the medicine they need to feel better.
ECS Ribbon Cutting Sunday, Sept. 20 The Ellicottville Board of Education will officially open the school’s newly renovated areas during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 20 from 2-3 p.m. in the new multi-purpose room. Refreshments and tours will be offered following a brief program (speakers to be announced). And yes, a TV will be set up for fans to stay on top of the Buffalo Bills game during that hour.

Strengthening the curriculum and providing more teacher resources for middle school students is the top instructional focus for the board and school district in 2015-16. The Middle School made significant gains in its 2015 rankings among Western New York schools over 2014. It ranked No. 46 of 194 schools this year, compared to No. 64 of 205 schools in 2014. Among public middle schools, it ranked No. 21 of 151. It rated four stars in math and three (top 50 percent) in English and remains the highest ranked middle school in Cattaraugus County. But those improvements don’t tell the whole story. In certain areas and certain grades, test results show much more can be done to improve not just rankings and test scores, but the entire educational experience for middle schoolers, especially seventh and eighth graders. As a result, during its first meeting of the official start of the school year on Tuesday, Sept. 8, the board and administrators discussed adding teaching aides and other tutoring support for middle school students this year. Elementary School Principal Connie Poulin pointed out that the addition of teaching support for grades 3-6 has had a measurable impact on what students have learned and been
able to demonstrate on tests over the past two years. “We know that providing more resources works – the elementary test results prove it. Let’s use the same strategy for our middle school students,” Poulin said. Other top areas for the board’s focus is completion of the strategic plan that is under way, adjusting to the new facilities, providing more technology education to go along with new equipment, and, perhaps, funding new security, technology and telephone systems if the school receives a state-sponsored “Smart Schools” grant. The board also discussed the pros and cons of the district budgeting for the cost of college-credit course fees and books for all students. MS/HS Principal Bob Miller explained that enrollment this year is good for these courses, but he knows there are many students who are academically strong enough to benefit from the classes but whose families cannot afford them. “Many kids never consider them because they don’t or won’t ask their parents or anyone else for the money,” he said. “While these courses really are the cheapest college courses around, they’re still out of range for some families.” While it’s possible to look to private sources for funding individual students, Ward pointed out that it is not possible for the district to provide funding for some
students and not for others. And offering assistance only to students who show interest won’t identify students who would never ask for help. The board will continue the discussion over the coming weeks. In other business, Superintendent Mark Ward reported that construction work at the school is now in the finishing phases. “There are lots of little things to do, but most areas are within a week or two of completion,” he said. “A couple of needs have been identified, however,” he said, both of them items that were eliminated from the construction plans for budget reasons. One is padding for the multi-purpose room bleacher seats. The other is something to protect the wood veneer at the sides and bottom of the stage. Ward said that some actual costs of the entire project came in lower than expected in the end, so there is about $100,000 still unspent. The board authorized Ward to purchase the padding for the seats (at a cost of approx. $5000) and asked him to provide pricing for a proposed retractable curtain to protect the veneer, which he thought would run in the $20,000 range. The next meeting of the Ellicottville Central School board is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library.
Kaleigh Hunt Named Nat’l Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist By Jann Wiswall
Kaleigh E. Hunt, a senior at Ellicottville High School, has been named a 2016 National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, one of 16,000 semifinalists in the U.S. who will compete for 7,600 scholarships worth some $32 million. Hunt is one of 23 Western New York students -- and the only student from Cattaraugus County – to achieve the distinction. Semi-finalists are the top scorers among the 1.5 million
U.S. students who took the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) in October 2014 and met the competition’s entry requirements. Finalists will be announced in February 2016 and Scholarship Award Winners will be notified beginning in March. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. Congratulations Ms. Hunt!

The Franklinville/ Ellicottville Titans Varsity football avenged its only two losses last year to Class D State Champions Randolph Cardinals by handing them a 32-12 loss Friday, Sept. 4 in Franklinville. The scoring was started by senior quarterback Tommy Easton connecting with sophomore Griffin Chudy and then again on the two point conversion. Easton followed up with a 25 yard touchdown pass to sophomore Austin Grinols. Senior Caleb Rinko scored the next two touchdowns with Chudy adding a two point C cconversion. On the defensive side of the ball, Preston Hutchinson had 12+ tackles. The Titans next play Cattaraugus/Little Valley on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at CLV. The Ellicottville Little Eagles Pee Wee & Midgets both ran their records to 3-0 Friday night by beating back the Springville Griffins. The Pee Wees won 25-6 and were led by Brad John when he stripped the ball defensively and rumbled for a 45 yard touchdown run. Owen Chudy and Errol Moore each had touchdowns. The Midgets were ahead 20-0 when the game was called at halftime. Jordan Grinols scored twice on two runs of 40+ yards and Ryan DeKay had the other score as he blasted in a 7-yard scamper to close out the scoring. The Eagles have a bye this week and will travel to

Get out of the house and come join in the fun as Allegany State Park continues its new series of hikes called “3rd Saturday Treks.” As the name implies, these free, familyfriendly hikes will take place on the 3rd Saturday of each month from March through October. The treks will be led by park staff, members of the
Allegany State Park Friends Group, or Historical Society members and each will focus on a different area of the park. This month’s 3rd Saturday Trek will take place on Sept. 19. Participants will be taken on an Interpretative hike into the woods of Blacksnake Mountain in Allegany State Park. The hike is on a
relatively easy hiking trail, approximately 2.7 miles. Much of the trail is located on an abandoned railroad bed. Other landmarks on the trail include state line markers indicating the border between New York and Pennsylvania, abandoned oil wells, manmade stone culverts, as well as an interesting variety of native flora and fauna. Attendees are asked to meet at the Blacksnake Mountain Hiking Trailhead (program site 41), located on ASP Rt. 3 near Science Lake, at 10 a.m., and to come dressed for the weather. Each hike will last approximately two hours. Registration is not required. How many New Year’s Eves have you spent sipping champagne and vowing to get more fit in the coming year? And how many times have you failed to follow through? “December 31 over a drink is too late to set goals and make promises,” says Justin Price, owner of The Biomechanics, a personal training and wellness coaching facility in San Diego. Fall, on the other hand, is a great time to start a fitness program because “you’re going to create good habits for the holiday season and the upcoming winter months,” says Price. Chris Freytag, a fitness instructor and fitness expert with Prevention magazine, agrees. “With the change of seasons comes a renewed time to rethink and restart. What’s so special about January?” she says. Besides, says Freytag, a mother of three, moms with school-aged kids “think of September as the new year.” Here are some ways to start
making the most of the season. And who knows? This year, you might be in great shape before that New Year’s Eve party rolls around. 1. Take advantage of the weather. Fall can be a treat for the senses: the crisp air, apple picking, pumpkin carving, a gorgeous canopy of fall foliage and the crunch of leaves underfoot. These months are a great time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler temperatures. “Walking, hiking and cycling are all awesome in the fall,” says Todd Durkin, MS, fitness coach and owner of Fitness Quest 10 in San Diego. Discover park trails and take in some new scenery, whether you’re walking, biking or inline skating, he suggests. Or, if you live near the beach, get out and play volleyball, throw the Frisbee around, or play a vigorous game of fetch with your dog. “It’s a great time to do beach activities because it’s so much less crowded,” says Price. If you’re near a lake, try kayaking or canoeing for an excellent whole-body workout and a great change of pace. And remember, it doesn’t have to seem like exercise to be a great workout. 2. Integrate exercise into your life. You already know the obvious suggestions: park farther away from your destination; take stairs instead of elevators; take a walk during your lunch break. Here are a few that are less obvious: If you’re spending the afternoon taking kids to soccer
practice instead of reading a book or visiting with another parent, “why not walk around the outside of the field while they practice?” suggests Price. “Or (if you feel comfortable) warm up and cool down with the kids.” Or, try “walking meetings,” like those Price and his colleagues at Biomechanics often hold. “We go for a walk, we brainstorm and we figure out who’s going to take what responsibilities,” says Price. “Things get achieved much more quickly,” he says, and everyone feels better for doing it. 3. Rejuvenate yourself. Fall is the time to rejuvenate body, mind and spirit, says Durkin. Get a massage after your run. Learn to meditate. Take an art class. Treat yourself not just with exercise but other activities that promote wellness, he says, so you can feel good physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. 4. Remember the 30-day rule. “It takes about four weeks for the body to adapt to lifestyle changes,” says Price. That’s why people who give up on their fitness programs tend to do so within the first 30 days. So, when the alarm goes off in the morning and it’s darker and colder, don’t roll over and hit the snooze button. “Try to stick with a program for a month,” Price says. “After a month, behavior patterns will have adapted and it will be much easier to stick with it after that.”

Mary Grace Davis Mary Grace Davis, a lifelong resident of Ellicottville, passed away Friday, July 31, 2015. She was the wife of the late Donald E. Davis and mother of MIchael W. Davis of North Carolina, David J. Davis of Ellicottville, Daniel P. Davis of Jamestown and Donna (Timothy) Marien of Brant. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Sarah
(Chad) Flora, Katherine (John) Wehrfritz, Beth Marien, Cody Davis and Kyle Ross Davis; and three great-grandchildren, Blake and Lucas Wehrfritz and Skylar Flora. She was predeceased by Dylan Davis and Michaela Davis. Mary Grace passed away at the home of Timothy and Donna Marien after a short-
term illness. She donated her body to the University at Buffalo Anatomical Gift program - “getting her degree.” There was a memorial service for Mary Grace Davis at the Ellicottville Legion on Sunday, August 30, 2015. It was attended by family, friends and neighbors. A private burial will be determined.

The two-time Taste of Ellicottville People’s Choice winner for Best Overall Food in 2012 and 2014 has created another award-winning menu sure to please most everyone. It was obvious diners were excited to try something new, as crowds ďŹ lled the restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner over Labor Day weekend, knowing that anything Arena creates is absolutely delicious. But don’t compare Katy’s CafĂŠ to the Fly-In. “It’s completely different,â€? said Arena. “Breakfast is a little more classic diner — fried grits, sausage gravy, hash, pancakes, French toast. Lunch and dinner is a combination menu and there is everything from a regular burger to a specialty half-pound burger to chicken sandwiches, meatloaf, pizza, fried chicken.â€? The grand opening on Saturday went well and the Facebook reviews (Katy’s FlyIn) have been nothing short of glowing. But with a new staff and a new kitchen, things aren’t always perfect from the outset. “It was very, very busy — much more than we expected. There were a few hiccups,â€?
Arena said. “I hope people can be forgiving — we made a few errors. It’s a new restaurant. There’s going to be an issue here and an issue there.â€? One hitch came on Sunday when the restaurant ran out of enough lunch and dinner items that they had to close halfway through the day. “People were ordering burgers nonstop,â€? she said. “We went through ďŹ ve to six cases of burgers, and we had to shut down because we were out of food. We had plenty of breakfast items, but the dinners and lunches — we just didn’t expect it.â€? No worries though. The doors were open once again bright and early the next morning. According to Arena, the restaurant plans to be open from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, but these hours may be adjusted. Katy’s Fly-In offers a clean, fresh interior making it a great place to bring family and friends. The eatery seats approximately 60 and is inuenced by an aviation theme. There is an airplane wing hanging from the ceiling along with other rustic aviation
decor, according to Arena, and the restaurant has already welcomed patrons who came in by plane from Great Valley Airport. “It’s casual, family friendly. It’s a really comfortable atmosphere,â€? said Arena. “Eventually, we’ll have a beer and wine license. We have applied but we haven’t gotten our license yet. We put the old bar from Fosters in and it was reďŹ nished. It’s absolutely beautiful!â€? native John Rounds expects to open in time for Fall Festival weekend. The lower level of the building will be occupied by The Boardroom snowboard shop’s second Ellicottville location. Around the corner from Adventure Bound, at 7 Monroe Street, another Ellicottville native and successful Buffalo restaurateur Nick Pitillo, is opening a casual Italian dining spot in the former location of The Barn. Pitillo and his partner/corporate chef Jeff Cooke currently operate the popular Osteria 166 on Franklin Street in Buffalo. The new Ellicottville location, which is twice the size of the Buffalo restaurant, will be called Villagio (village in Italian). While not on the planning board’s ofďŹ cial agenda for the evening, Pitillo and Cooke attended the meeting to get feedback on possible changes to the exterior of the building.
Renderings of the proposed look and feel of the building façade were presented, along with two possible logo treatments. Pitillo explained that a high priority will be to ďŹ nd ways to let more natural light into the restaurant. Two openings on the front second oor of the building that currently hold air conditioners will be replaced with windows. Future plans include adding dormers. The front entry doors will be replaced with double doors and topped with an awning. A perpendicular hanging sign also will be installed. Extensive interior changes (which don’t require planning board approval but are necessary for health dept. and code enforcement approvals) are in the works
as well, Pitillo said. He and Cooke are working closely with Ellicottville Building Inspector/Code Enforcement OfďŹ cer Tom Abriatis to ensure everything is done according to code. Overall, the planning board was very pleased with the direction Pitillo and Cooke are taking with the building. According to Pitillo, Villagio will be a restaurant for “relaxed family diningâ€? in a cozy, warm, inviting setting. “This won’t be a party bar,â€? he said. The menu will be similar to Osteria 166’s, with an emphasis on Italian dishes that are family recipes, and will feature a wide variety of wine and daily specials. Pitillo and Cooke are leaning toward opening for dinner six nights a week and serving lunch on weekends, but speciďŹ c hours of operation will be determined. They hope to open by Fall Festival weekend with a tentative VIP opening on Thursday, Oct. 1.
