June 20 Mudslide Obstacle Run Holiday Valley
Still Time to Register for Saturday’s Mudslide By Alicia Dziak
It’s time for loads of muddy fun at the annual Mudslide obstacle run at Holiday Valley, happening this Saturday, June 20! Choose from the 3.5 mile or 5.4 mile courses, and get ready to have a blast! The race begins at the Spruce chairlift. Then it’s up to you to find your way over, under and through 11 wet and wild obstacles. The course will be a combination of old favorites and some brand new muddy challenges. “We put climb-over tubes at the top of Tannenbaum that will have a water spray,” said Jane Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley’s marketing director. “We are adding ‘mud moguls’ at the bottom of Explorer, a balance beam at Holiday Run/ Northwind and spider webs at the base of Yodeler that will be used in the kids’ race.” All races end at the famous mudslide down the base of Yodeler, where there’s no escaping the muddy mess that awaits you. From there, head to the finish line where you’ll be awarded your medal and can rinse off using the snow guns. Costumes are encouraged and prizes will be awarded to the most creative.—sp why not slide into a mud pit wearing an old bridesmaid’s dress or some Lederhosen? Your reward for completing the course is a fabulous postrace party by Yodeler Lodge. Eshbaugh explained that every competitor will get a hot dog and two beers or other

There’s never a shortage of fun in Ellicottville, and with the long, sunny days ahead, festival season will soon be in full swing. Mark your calendars for the upcoming festival weekends so you don’t miss a beat! Summer Music Festival, July 3-5 Music, games, family-friendly fun, and, of
course, fireworks! It’s all here on Independence Day weekend at the annual Summer Music Festival, July 3-5 at Holiday Valley and in the village of Ellicottville. Friday, July 3 – Kick off the weekend with a Top of the Mountain Party. Take a chair lift ride to a celebration, complete with drinks and hors d’oeuvres, then head back down the mountain, where the party will continue at Holiday Valley’s Main Lodge with a Caribbean Poker Night. Use the funny money that comes with your ticket to grow your pot, and then use the “money” to bid on auction items. Saturday, July 4 – Check out the annual Pet Parade, beginning at 11 a.m. on Washington Street, and stay for the Ellicottville Gazebo Music Series from 1 to 4 p.m. in the village. That evening, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) will take to the Holiday Valley stage at 8 p.m. See Ellicottville Festivals page 5

The full 2015 report on Western New York school rankings has been released by Buffalo Business First and the Ellicottville Central School District has shown some impressive results on numerous levels.
The publication ranked all public and private schools and districts in Western New York (Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties), using four years of raw data supplied by See ECS Rankings page 4

This half- mile long course includes two obstacles and the mudslide. Kids even get a cool finisher’s medal to proudly wear around their necks afterwards. Register your child on race day under the Yodeler Deck for just $5. Haven’t signed up yet? No worries. You can sign up last minute on Friday evening at the Overlook Terrace and
stay for the family-friendly Summer Kickoff Party, where pre-registered participants can pick up their race packets, as well. Race packet pickup is from 5-8 p.m. and the party is from 6-9 p.m., where guests can enjoy a chicken and ribs barbecue, live music by The Bleeding Hearts, poolside games, and fun in the pool. the New York State Education Department. Schools were not ranked if they did not participate in the statewide testing program or had not generated two years of test data. ECS has showed gains in almost every academic ranking category since last year, and, as reported in the Ellicottville Times last week, ranked #1 for the third year in a row for teacher experience. Overall, the ECS District ranked #18 among 96 districts across the region. Its rank in 2014 was #22 of 97 districts. Ellicottville Elementary School was ranked #22 out of 262 schools, earning it a fivestar distinction as one of the top 10 percent of all regional elementary schools. 2014 data
placed the school at #35 of 276. Among public schools in 2015, Ellicottville Elementary ranked #15 out of 219 schools. It also earned five stars (top 10%) for its math rating and four stars (top 25%) for English. Ellicottville Middle School also made significant gains in its rankings over 2014. It ranked #46 of 194 schools this year, compared to #64 of 205 schools in 2014. Among public middle schools, it ranks #21 of 151. It rated four stars in math and three (top 50%) in English. Ellicottville High School also showed improvement over last year, with a rank of #33 of 136 schools (#23 among 122 public high schools). This is a gain of six spots over 2014 when 135 schools were ranked. It earned four stars for math,
English, science and social studies ratings. Notably, Ellicottville High School students had the best SAT scores of all but two other schools in Western New York (based on 2013 data). With all these results in hand, it’s probably no surprise to learn that Ellicottville remains the highest ranked district, elementary school, middle school and high school in Cattaraugus County. Patrick McMahon-Eagan is the son of Kelly McMahon and Kevin Eagan. He has achieved the second highest GPA in the class of 2015 and will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma with honors. Patrick is president of the Foreign Language Club and participated in Quiz Bowl his freshman, sophomore and junior j years of high school. As for sports, Patrick played varsity soccer for three years and was a co- captain his senior year. In addition, he took part in track his senior year. Patrick has been on the honor roll each quarter all four years of high school and has received a several athletic honors as well. For example, he was given the Dana Stark “Love of the Game” award for soccer, earned First Team League honors for soccer his senior year and was named to the Big 30 All- Star soccer team his senior year. During high school, Patrick spent many hours at the Salamanca Soup Kitchen in the Community Action Center volunteering as a food server and dishwasher. He also participated as an instructor in the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program at Holiday Valley where he taught snowboarding to children with special needs. Also, he was a paid worker at Tips Up Café for two years as a kitchen worker and busser and is currently employed at Dina’s restaurant in Ellicottville as a busser. Patrick plans to attend SUNY Fredonia in the fall with an applied mathematics major and minors in French and English.
Mansfield’s Efficiency Plan in State’s Hands By Jann Wiswall
Town of Mansfield Supervisor Bob Keis submitted a plan to the state that demonstrates how it can save one percent of their operating budgets by consolidating services with other municipalities. Municipalities all over New York were asked by the state to devise these “government efficiency plans.” Once approved, the state will reimburse qualifying homeowners for a share of
future property taxes. Mansfield teamed with the town and village of Ellicottville to show how their intermunicipal agreement for water and sewer service at WestMont Ridge (which is in Mansfield) meets the state’s criteria for consolidation. In other business at the very brief June 15 Mansfield board meeting, the board accepted a bid for tile installation at the town highway department building.
Highway Superintendent Brad Hurley reported that Watson Road will be chipped as soon as weather permits. Hurley said there has been some minor damage to roads following recent heavy rains. Highway department employees will be able to handle those repairs. The next meeting of the Mansfield board is scheduled for Monday, July 20 at 7 p.m. in the town hall. All are welcomed.

Weight loss boils down to a simple equation: Expend more calories than you take in. With that, eating well and doing cardio is the fast track to success. But, when it comes to reshaping your body, there’s a totally different way to get results: strength training. “The number on the scale is where you want it, but maybe your butt is still saggy or your tummy not quite as taut.… Less cardio and more lifting fixes that,” says Holly Perkins, a strength and conditioning specialist and founder of WomensStrengthNation.com, a resource to inspire women to get in the weight room. So why do less cardio? For one, cardio is catabolic; too much of it increases production of the stress hormone cortisol, which, over time, slows down your metabolism and throws off how your body manages carbohydrates by shuttling them to be stored as fat. Also, cardio doesn’t have the muscle building effects like strength training does. When you run, you engage your butt and legs, but it’s not enough to break
Town Supervisor John Burrell started the regular meeting with the good news that the town’s premium for Worker’s Compensation insurance has gone down by 13% for 2015-16, saving the town some $8,200 next year, and that the town had received a dividend check for almost $9,700 for fiscal year 2013-14. The town also was in receipt of an insurance settlement check of more than $63,000 for damage to pumping station #2. Burrell asked the board and media for their support in quashing a rumor that the town supervisor will appoint the next highway superintendent. In fact, it is the responsibility of the full town board to interview and appoint a qualified individual to the job. Town residents passed a law in November making the highway superintendent position an appointed one, rather than an elected position, effective January 1, 2016. Burrell also reported that: current Town Highway Superintendent Loyd Hovey met with Andy Toth, the town’s accountant, and others to be trained on budget processes and procedures; the Gazebo has been painted and freshly landscaped; and he and Hovey had met with representatives of the Teamsters (discussion about that meeting and the status of negotiations was held during executive session). Toth and Ron Green from the town’s audit firm were on hand at the meeting to brief the board on the town’s financial status, which is “in quite good health,” Toth said. Green shared a draft of the audit and pointed out to the board that the town is getting a “qualified opinion,” which is
not ideal, but is not a reason for concern. The qualified opinion is because the town has managed to save more money than the state generally likes to see. When municipalities have savings it might suggest that taxes are being collected in advance, Green explained. “The state would rather you borrow instead of save,” he said. Burrell explained that the town’s savings are due to increases in sales tax revenues, not tax increases. And with the state’s tax freezes, he argued, “we need to have money in the bank to make repairs and improvements in the future.” Green made a point to thank deputy town clerk Tracy Stokes and town clerk Robyn George for their help during the audit. “They were instrumental in getting the report done,” he said. Burrell added that it’s obvious that they are doing a great job with the books. The board will review the draft audit and act on it at its July meeting. Under new business, the board approved Burrell’s proposal to name the town’s highway building on Bryant Hill Rd. after former Highway Superintendent Dave Golley, who passed away in December 2014. The board also approved a Rotary Club of Ellicottville request to replace the existing lighting in the large event space in the Town Center with dimmable lights. The board approved the request. And, the board authorized advertisement for a public hearing on a proposed Alarm System Local Law at the July 15 meeting. The draft of the local law is available for review at the town clerk’s office.
Department Reports Police: Police Officer in Charge Don Auge reported that none of the town’s police officers had been wanted to test out the department’s body camera until a policy is in place regarding its use. A draft of that policy had been reviewed by the board, however, and was adopted with some minor edits. Auge also said that most officers have been trained on the proper administration of Narcan®, a medication used to counter the effects of opioid (e.g. heroin) overdose. Those who have been trained are now equipped with their own kits. Board member and volunteer fire fighter Rick Jackson noted that all ambulances and most fire department vehicles are now equipped with the kits, as well. Highway: Hovey was authorized by the board to accept the low bid for sand and gravel; he also was authorized to contract with a low bidder to lease a large excavator needed for Sommerville Valley Road repairs. Hovey said his staff has been busy keeping up with recent weather-related drainage issues, as well as mowing, digging ditches, road repair and other work. Engineering: Town Engineer Mark Alianello also reported weather-related issues that have slowed completion of roadwork associated with the East Tank project and challenged workers on the Holiday Valley road realignment and related projects there. The next meeting of the town board will be held on Wednesday, July 15 in the town/village hall.
down the tissue prompting the muscle to rebuild stronger and firmer like weighted squats can do. So how much weight should you be lifting? For starters, Perkins recommends you lift weights heavy enough so you can do 12 to 15 perfect reps of any move, but no more. “The weights you’ll be lifting will trigger big muscle growth,” she says, and it will make your metabolism active, which will help you burn more calories. “This training also causes muscle fibers to swell, so they look toned,” says Perkins. Dense muscle is tighter than fat, which is why your weight can stay the same even though you may drop a full size. As little as two sessions a week for ten weeks can reduce overall body fat by about 3 percentage points, even if you don’t cut a single calorie. That translates to as much as three inches total off your waist and hips. Although cardio burns more calories than strength training during those 30 sweaty minutes, pumping iron slashes more overall. A study in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that women who completed an hour-long strength training workout burned an average of 100 more calories in the 24 hours afterward than they did when they hadn’t lifted weights. At three sessions a week, that’s 15,600 calories a year, or about four and a half pounds of fat—without having to move a muscle. What’s more, increasing that afterburn is as easy as
upping the weight on your bar. A study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that women burned nearly twice as many calories in the two hours after their workout when they lifted 85 percent of their max load for eight reps than when they did more reps (15) at a lower weight (45 percent of their max). For the greatest calorie burn, aim for total-body workouts that target your arms, abs, legs and back, and go for moves that will zap several different muscle groups at a time—for example, do squats, which call on muscles in both the front and back of your legs, as opposed to leg extensions, which isolate the quads. And remember to fuel your workout properly. Too many dieters make the error of cutting back on crucial muscle-maintaining protein when they want to slash their overall calorie intake. The counterproductive result: They lose muscle along with any fat that might have melted away. Sports nutritionist Cassandra Forsythe, Ph.D., co-author of The New Rules of Lifting for Women, recommends that you eat one gram of protein for every pound of your body weight that does not come from fat. For instance, a 140-pound woman whose body fat is 25 percent would need 105 grams of high-quality protein. That’s roughly four servings a day; the best sources are chicken or other lean meats, soy products, and eggs. Ready to turn yourself into a lean, mean, calorie-torching machine? Then go get pumped!

Recently, I made the 40-minute drive to Olean from Ellicottville to check out the Allegheny River Valley Trail, a project originally spearheaded by Olean businessman Joe Higgins. The story of the Allegheny River Valley Trail is well documented in the EllicottvilleGreat Valley (EVGV) Trail’s Master Plan, which Higgins helped write with the trail committee, and is frequently referenced in trail committee meetings, so I figured it only made sense to see first-hand what it had to offer and the role it plays within the Town and Village of Allegany, the City of Olean and on the St. Bonaventure campus. Wanting to pick up a portion of the trail that skirts the Allegheny River, I pulled a well-detailed map off the Town of Allegany website and decided to pick up the trail in Gargoyle Park located at the trail’s southern tip. On foot and moving at my usual accelerated walking pace, I headed northwest along the river onto the St. Bonaventure campus. I found
the scenery fantastic. The trail is entirely paved and mostly shaded, which was a nice perk on an 80-degree day. The Gargoyle Park area of the trail does witness some noise from traffic on the other side of the river along West River Road, but as you enter the SBU campus, the trail becomes more tranquil and stocked with beautiful vegetation. Between Gargoyle Park and the SBU campus, I encountered two bikers and another three or four walkers. As I made my way onto the SBU campus, the scene was very quiet, which can be expected on a Friday afternoon in late June. Then I looped back to my car parked at Gargoyle Park. If I had to wager how long my total trek was, I’d have to guess somewhere around three-plus miles (I suppose a Fit Bit® would make for a nice Father’s Day gift). After leaving Gargoyle Park and needing to wet my whistle, I stopped in to Applebee’s Restaurant at the end of Gargoyle Road at West State Street. There I chatted up Kris the bartender, a late 20-something local millennial who actually fabricated his own custom mountain bike and regularly rides the Allegheny River Valley Trail. “I love the trail!” he said enthusiastically. “I usually ride 2-3 times a week, make two
loops at a time and hammer out about 12 miles. You just have to make sure to keep your mouth shut when you’re along the river, because you’ll swallow a ton of bugs if you don’t.” As someone who would rather ride his bike than drive, Kris mentioned he hopes to see future expansion of the trail into Olean to access more convenience locations, while also providing a safe transportation mechanism for bicyclists and walkers, especially from the St. Bonaventure campus, while also alleviating some traffic. Acting as a true ambassador for the Olean/Allegany region, Kris suggested I check out Four Mile Brewing while in town. I told him next time and I’ll make sure to bring a bike with me to check out all six miles of the trail. All this made me think about the impact a trail 2.5 times the length of the Allegheny River Valley Trail in our destination location, which is already filled with outdoor and retail activity, would have on Ellicottville and Great Valley.
