Budding trees and flowers, buzzing bees, warmer temps and plenty of sunshine. Spring is in full swing, and it’s time to get out and enjoy all the activities in Ellicottville and beyond! Adventure Time Want to get your adrenaline rush on? The wait for adventure is over, as Sky High Aerial Park opens for the season May 6. Navigate 13 courses of varying difficulty, as you move from one platform to the next on hanging bridges, rope ladders and ziplines. You can also scale the trees at the Climbing Forest, which is like a 3D version of a rock wall. Sky High will be open May 6-June 12, Fridays through Sundays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Reservations are recommended; call 716-699HIGH. The Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster, located by Holiday Valley’s Tannenbaum Lodge, re-opens May 20. Ride a car up the mountain and fly down at your own controlled speed. Whitewater rafting season is now! Head to Zoar Valley and take a guided trip down the Cattaraugus Creek. You’ll get gorgeous views of the gorge, and chances are you’ll spot some wildlife you don’t see every day. Fun Runs On May 7, it’s time to get happy! The all-new Happy Half and 5K are two fun races that begin and end at Holiday Valley. Brave participants can also sign up for the Beer Mile by drinking a beer, running a quarter mile and repeating three more times. The Southern Tier after-party in the Main Lodge is sure to be a great place to recap all the fun! Info

First Yurt Campsite Coming to EVL

A new camping option may be coming to the area if Justin Dineen’s project gets Ellicottville Planning Board approval. Dineen presented
his concept to the board at its meeting on Monday, April 26. Dineen explained that he had recently purchased about 13 acres of land off Rt. 219 near the old Riley’s restaurant site
with the intention of opening a new commercial campground featuring yurts. According to the MerriamWebster Dictionary, a yurt is “a circular domed tent of skins or felt stretched over a collapsible lattice framework” originally used by nomads and other “pastoral peoples of inner Asia.” They have become quite popular throughout the U.S. as a design for camping structures (imagine a cross between a tent and a cabin), not to mention some rather impressive permanent residences. Dineen said that he expects to develop his campground,
The Ellicottville Fire Department’s Recruit NY event was a great success, as more than 100 area residents turned out last Saturday, April 23, for demonstrations, rides, delicious chicken dinners and fun activities for the kids. The event, of course, wasn’t just about having fun. It was about encouraging people to join the all-volunteer, all-important fire department. And that, too, was a success. The department received one application to join, two applications for the department’s Explorer Program (for ages 13-15), five volunteers for the FD Auxiliary, and several others expressed interest. Now that the snow and ice are gone and mud season has almost passed, it is the perfect time to take a journey along New York’s Amish Trail! The historic village of Randolph, which is just a 30 minute drive from Ellicottville, is known as the southern gateway to Cattaraugus County’s large Old Order Amish settlement. Tom Scharf was appointed the Town of Ellicottville’s Highway Superintendent at a special meeting of the Town Board on Wednesday, April 27. Scharf starts his new job on Monday, May 2. Scharf has worked at J.D. Northrup Construction since 1987 as a heavy equipment operator and foreman. He has experience with road construction, utility work, drainage and erosion control, excavation and more. He also has supervisory experience and strong communication skills. See Highway Supt. page 8
ECS Rejects Merger Study Request By Colleen Mahoney
The Ellicottville Central School Board of Education is not interested in partially funding a pre-merger study with West Valley Central School (WVCS) and SpringvilleGriffith Institute (SGI). The decision was made during the board’s April 26 meeting after Superintendent
Mark Ward read a letter from WVCS Superintendent Eric Lawton to ECS and SGI asking that the three districts enter into a pre-merger study, splitting the cost three ways. The ECS board held a discussion, noting that they only discussed an annexation with WVCS. “What is a pre-merger
study? We’re not interested in a merger,” board member Nicole Klein said. “We talked about annexation … that’s what we’re comfortable with.” Ward said he believed a pre-merger study would be a step toward a more formal discussion, but added that it adds one more layer to See ECS Board page 4

Show some love on May 7 for Allegany State Park during the 5th annual “I Love My Park Day,� sponsored by State Parks and Parks and Trails New York. The Friends of Allegany State Park will be spearheading this year’s event at Allegany State Park in cooperation with Park Staff. I Love My Park Day allows volunteers
the opportunity to give back to the park they love by spending a day participating in various projects that improve and enhance the Allegany experience for visitors. This year’s event will be held Saturday, May 7 in the Quaker Run Area. Volunteer projects will focus mainly on cabin trail clean up with some other small site improvement projects such as gardening, painting, and minor repairs. For the fourth annual statewide event last spring, 6,500 volunteers took part in over 200 cleanup, improvement and beautiďŹ cation projects at 95 state parks and historic sites, contributing 16,000 hours of
volunteer service. Check in/registration on May 7 is from 9-10 a.m. at the Quaker Picnic Shelter. Projects will be worked on from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Volunteers are asked to bring a snack, dress for the weather, and prepare to get dirty. A volunteer picnic afterward at the Quaker Picnic Shelter will be offered for a nominal fee. Interested participants should pre-register for I Love My Park Day at www.ptny. org/ilovemypark. Over the years I have had the opportunity to train a variety of clients. Each client has his or her own unique set of goals. Recently, I had the opportunity to train 15-year-old Elissa Cole. Elissa, a freshman at Ellicottville Central and a selfdescribed tomboy, is a rising star in the world of freestyle skiing, specifically, shredding moguls while doing tricks. Elissa started skiing at HoliMont when she was just three years old. By the time she was 7, she was spending all her time in terrain parks. Due to her reckless nature, her parents suggested channeling that energy into freestyle skiing, where she would be properly trained and less likely to end up in the ER.
Elissa competes for HoliMont’s FLITE Team where she is on the A Team. What follows is an opportunity to be apart of Nor-Am, World-Cup and ultimately, the Olympics. Since that is the lofty goal of this avid and enthusiastic athlete, Elissa, along with her family, puts in many extra hours of additional training. Over the past year, Elissa diligently trains after school, on summer mornings and between school sports programs like volleyball and softball. We work on her cardio vascular endurance, core strength, balance and elasticity. When she is not in the gym, she is training in Lake Placid perfecting her tricks like back flips and the back full (a flip with a full 360 degree twist). When I asked her if she felt a difference in her freestyle performance since training at Core Performance, Elissa stated, she is “no longer winded at the end of a course” adding that, “the training has helped (me) feel more in control while being constantly in motion.” However, even the besttrained athletes can crash. Just this past season, Elissa was training when she crashed, landing on her face while attempting a back flip. Elissa
did note that she always wears an FIS-approved helmet and a back brace, but, even with the best equipment, crashes can be inevitable. This is yet another reason why Elissa trains. She knows the stronger she is, the more she is assured that her body can withstand the rigors of freestyle skiing.

an already lengthy process. WVCS and ECS would have to conduct a feasibility study, a straw poll and then a public vote before they could merge or annex. A pre-merger study costs roughly $5,000 and the ECS board did not feel it should be responsible for paying. “An annexation is the only thing we’re interested in talking about,” Board President Carl Calarco said. “We’re fine with sharing the cost for an annexation study … not this.” The board authorized Ward to send a response to Lawton, outlining its position. In other business, the board approved a junior varsity golf team after hearing from varsity golf coach Dan LaCroix. According to LaCroix, the
varsity team can no longer keep seventh and eighth graders on the team if they’re not among the top eight players. The rule change comes from the New York State Education Department. LaCroix explained that the regulations make it more difficult for the younger students to remain on the team, many of whom enjoy the sport. “Adding a JV team … lets the kids … continue to play and build their skills,” LaCorix said. There will be no additional cost to the district for a JV team and LaCroix said he will assume responsibility for the JV coaching position. “He wants to develop the
sport and this is a way to do that,” Ward said. “It’s a good opportunity … a great way to learn to play a lifetime sport.” The board also approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with Erie 1 BOCES to furnish computers for the district. Ward explained the agreement is for laptops and will cost the district $13,423.20 over five years. With the agreement, the district will be able provide laptops for students in 7th through 12th grade. The board will hold a public hearing on the 2016-17 budget on May 10, at 7:30 p.m. in advance of the budget vote on May 17. All are welcomed to attend.

called Ellicottville Yurts and Recreation, in two phases. Phase one will include up to four pre-fabricated yurts constructed on individual decks surrounded by landscaping for privacy. He hopes to have two of the four sites completed this year. The rustic campground will not have water or sewer; portable toilets will be provided. Guests would be invited to “carry in, carry out,” their own gear and supplies. Plans for phase two would include several additional yurts with sewer, water, electricity and a full range of amenities at a camp site in another area of the property. The planning board was positive about Dineen’s plan, especially his scale model of a yurt and deck (see photo). The board provided advice on how to complete his special
use permit application and site plan. It will consider the project once those materials are in order. Old Business Philip Vogt, the developer of Trail Heights Development off Poverty Hill Road, received the Planning Board’s approval of a preliminary plat plan at last month’s meeting following a public hearing. He and his engineer were back at the April meeting hoping for approval of the final plat plan. The development with 14 lots for single-family homes is on 70-acres across Poverty Hill Rd. from the planned 42 Degrees North (42DN) resort community. The private road, community trail, easements and drainage ponds will be maintained through a Homeowners Association (HOA).
The final plat plan as presented, however, required some minor changes per Town Planner Gary Palumbo and Town Engineer Mark Alianello and still must be reviewed and stamped by a licensed land surveyor. Plus, Palumbo pointed out, he and the full board must review the 90+-page draft homeowners’ association (HOA) document, which they only received on the day of the meeting. For these reasons, the board tabled a vote on the final plat plan until the next meeting but voted to waive another public hearing on the final plat since there was no public comment at the hearing last month. The next meeting of the planning board will be held on Monday, May 23 at 6 p.m. in the town/village hall.
Mansfield Roads Get Funding Boost By Jann Wiswall
The Town of Mansfield’s roads will benefit from some recently awarded state funds, as well as a $4.3 million county road project. This year’s NY Consolidated Local Streets and Highway Improvement Plan (CHIPS) funding to the town will total nearly $130,000, as reported to the town board by supervisor Bob Keis. Plus, Keis said, the state is providing an additional $29,638 for Mansfield road paving projects. Also this year, Cattaraugus County will be reconstructing County Rd. 13 (Maples Rd.) from the intersection with Kent/Hencoop Hollow Rd. to
the intersection with Hollister Hill Rd. The project includes resurfacing the entire road, straightening out and widening certain sections of the roadway, replacing a bridge and more at a cost of $4.3 million. Kent Road will be used as a detour. No start date has yet been announced. Keis also reminded the board that Monday, May 2 is bulky trash pick-up day for town residents. Residents may discard up to ten items, all of which must be put out on the edge of the road by Sunday, May 1. Each road will be picked up only once. Dry paint in cans, appliances (excluding refrigerators,
freezers and air conditioners), furniture and other bulky items will be picked up. The following items will NOT be picked up: regular garbage, tires, batteries, used oil, brush, barbed wire, chemicals, hazardous waste, automobiles, dead animals or animal waste, construction waste, propane cylinders. Non-Mansfield residents who discard items on Mansfield private property may be subject to prosecution. The next meeting of the town of Mansfield board will be held on Monday, May 16 at 7 p.m. at the town hall. All are welcomed.

It’s easy to get started on your journey. Visitors can stop by the Randolph Municipal Building’s Welcome Center, which is open 24 hours a day, at 72 Main Street. There, full-color New York Amish Trail maps are available for motorists to take a self-guided tour throughout the Amish community. A listing of Amish businesses is included in the guide, so whether one is primarily interested in quilts or furniture, the guide will point the way. Those unfamiliar with the back roads of Cattaraugus County can take advantage of a guided Amish Trail tour. These tours are available by reservation only and are arranged with an experienced local guide who accompanies you in your vehicle. Most guided tours last approximately three hours, and the tour guide can even tailor the tour to suit visitors’ interests and time constraints. Guided tours are just $40 and should be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance of your visit. What can visitors expect when they visit Randolph’s Amish community? Right away, visitors can observe the slower pace of Amish life, as theirs is a world separate from modern technology, trafďŹ c and commercialism. Along the way, drivers are sure to encounter horse-drawn buggies; take care not to follow too closely and pass with caution. Unlike some other Amish communities in the United States, Randolph’s Amish settlement is still very conservative. Clothes are hand-sewn in dark, muted colors (typically black, navy, and dark green), and lack even one of the simplest forms of “clothing technologyâ€?— the zipper, opting for oldfashioned buttons instead. Amish homes do not have phones or electricity, and even

Visitors are welcome to observe Amish homes and farms as they drive by in their vehicles; however, they do not open their homes to visitors to enter. Most visitors enjoy shopping for high-quality, handmade Amish goods, which are available all along the Amish Trail. Amish businesses are operated right on the family’s property and are typically open most days of the week except Sunday. Popular destinations include Malinda’s Candy Shop, where hungry visitors can shop for a variety of homemade candies, goat milk fudge, jams, jellies, and seasonal goodies. At Fairview Lawn Furniture, shoppers can peruse a beautiful selection of hand-crafted lawn chairs and picnic tables. Families with children will especially enjoy the Toy Shop on Pope Road in Randolph, where all kinds of wooden toys, including trains, cars and more are for sale. Visitors should keep in mind that there are many businesses along the way that do not have ofďŹ cial names or are simply roadside stands with fresh produce, owers and baked goods. Do remember to bring plenty of cash, as the Amish do not accept checks, and certainly not credit cards! If you need to get cash or a quick bite to eat, be sure to visit downtown Randolph before starting your journey! Scharf said he is looking forward to working with the public in his new position. “It will be great working in town and for the town,” he said. Town Supervisor Matt McAndrew said Scharf’s extensive experience in the field will be an asset for the town. The board also thanked Frank Moore for his leadership as Deputy Highway Superintendent over the past several months as the superintendent search was underway. During the special meeting, the board approved a recommendation from town engineer Mark Alianello to
replace booster station #1 with a new station that will be constructed in a building, instead of in the ground. Alianello had prepared a preliminary budget of $240,000 for the project, noting that there is enough money in the capital reserve fund to pay for the project. The board agreed that the project is necessary and that it makes more sense to do it right from the start instead of funding short-term, stop-gap measures that will only cost more in the end. Alianello was authorized to begin designing and bidding the project.

Audubon Nature Center Offering Volunteer Training In the past year, nearly 300 volunteers worked more than 12,000 hours to support the Audubon Nature Center’s mission to connect people to nature and promote environmentally responsible behaviors. On any given day, volunteers can be seen working on the trails, leading school groups, managing the membership program, feeding animals, and more. On Wednesday, May 4, naturalist and volunteer coordinator Katie Finch will present “Intro to Volunteering at the Nature Center” for people interested in volunteering. This 6:30-7:30 p.m. introductory training will cover a brief history of the Audubon Nature Center, review the many facets of the organization in which volunteers are involved, and acquaint participants with faces and places at the Nature Center.
