It’s that time of year when the snow has (mostly) melted, but the grass has yet to turn green. Even with only slightly warmer temps, who can wait any longer to get outside and enjoy? Don’t fret—there’s plenty of outdoor fun to be had during “mud season.” If you’re feeling adventurous and can’t wait for the mud to dry, put on some waterproof hiking boots and tackle the area trails on foot. A great option is the trails at Holiday Valley, which lead to nearby McCarty State Forest. Eager to get out for a hike but want to take it easy on the footwear? Allegany State Park boasts a lengthy paved biking and hiking trail that surrounds Red House Lake, as well as a shorter paved path that runs next to ASP 3 on the Quaker side. Or for a more leisurely stroll, check out Ellicottville’s Nannen Arboretum, open every day from dawn till dusk. Try whitewater rafting in Zoar Valley, where you can take a guided trip down the Cattaraugus Creek and make new friends along the way. HoliMont plans to have the Exhibition chair open all weekend. Additional lifts may be added as conditions are evaluated. ECS Presents: Cats Performances This Weekend
Ellicottville Central School’s spring musical performance of Cats takes place this Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Salamanca Ray Evans Theater. This beloved musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber is the third longest running musical in Broadway history and is sure to be a hit with theater-goers in Salamanca. Based on the T.S. Eliot novel Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the musical tells the story of a tribe of felines with a difficult choice to make. Members of the tribe tell their stories to the human audience, including how each cat got his or her name. Because of the many roles in Cats, most of the members of ECS’s drama club have a significant role telling the story of their feline characters through song and dance. Lead roles are being played by eighth grader Malorie Chamberlain, seniors Calum Watt, Olivia Venezia and Alessia Filutze, and junior Nick Delity. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the theater on both nights.
This past Mardi Gras/Winter Carnival weekend was a lot of fun for most of us, but for our local fire departments and ambulance service, it was one of the most intense weekends in anyone’s recent memory. School Board Passes $11.6 Million Budget By Jann Wiswall
The Ellicottville Central School Board unanimously passed the 2015-16 budget as presented at its meeting on Tuesday, April 7. ECS voters will have the final say on Tuesday, May 19 when they will be asked to vote on the proposition for the basic budget, additional funding
for school bus leases and the school’s annual contribution to the Ellicottville Memorial Library. The basic budget of $11,620,182 is an increase of $555,000 over last year. $180,000 of that will be covered by New York State aid, a welcome increase of $82,000 over last year. The balance will
be collected from taxpayers. While that tax increase comes to approximately 4.2 percent, 2.3% ($155,000) of those funds are to cover payments on the loans for the two capital projects that were approved by voters over the past two years. The remaining See School Board Passes Budget page 4

I was 18 then. Hard to believe. But then, sometimes it’s hard to believe a day has passed. When you’re young you spend your birthdays looking forward. Now I tend to look back. I turn 81 this week - 81, 18 -that’s a lot of life to remember, or even forget, and to be grateful for. I remember being expelled from school when I was 15. And going to Korea and Japan with the army. I arrived as the war was ending. Decent timing. I remember the Blitz, though I wouldn’t mind forgetting. I remember working in textiles for 11 years in England. Learning what a good suit was, and how to wear one, and much else. Hardly a glamorous job, but then that turned out not to matter a bit. I’ve visited so many parts of the world, and met so many people. They all stay with you, one way or another. And yet, to finish up here, to be able to work with the kids here in the village, to share the sport I love best with them --soccer—that’s something special. I’m so full of gratitude I can’t find the words for it. It’s Spring. Everything gets to be new again. Even me. A lot of things get better as you get older. Though not necessarily easier. You let go of so much. You learn to live with pain, but you get to live with so much else as well. And you want to share it all in a way. I am lucky to live in such a nice place and to be surrounded by a community of people who actually care for each other. We all are. The truth of it is clear and there is no point in belaboring it. And so I want to say – to all my special friends in this very special place – thank you. Thank you for being who and what you are. And thank you for making an old man feel a bit livelier, a bit younger, and very, very blessed. By Walland Holland Snr.

Free Hunter Education Classes Scheduled in April The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a hunters’ education class for the gun portion only on Monday, April 13 and Wednesday, April 15 from 4:30 to 10 p.m. The class will be held at the Hideaway Archery in Dayton, New York. There is no charge for the class. Participants must
attend both days of instruction to receive a certificate. It is preferable that participants be at least 12 years of age. Pre-registration is required. Reservations for the class may be made by calling the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office dispatch at (716) 9389191. Class size will be limited to

Last Day on the Slopes – Or Not By Dave Potter
Remember that first day of skiing back in November? Remember the excitement and the anticipation? Now we’re entering the sixth month of skiing. Six months! This has been a great and long season, but all good things must come to an end. The days are getting warmer. The rain is more likely to come rather than snow. And slowly but surely the sliders on the slopes are getting fewer. The Usual Gang of Idiots is also becoming noticeably smaller each weekend. They come up with flimsy excuses such as “my daughter is having a baby” or “I’m taking the family to South Beach.” They seem to think these issues are more important than skiing. Luckily, I still have two friends left who realize that you must still ski as long as we still have snow and the lifts are turning. So last weekend a much reduced Usual Gang of Idiots headed to the “Private Beach” for what might be the last ski event of the season. We arrived early, keeping with our “first runs are the best runs” philosophy. It was not crowded. Apparently, not too many people believe in our

back to the lodge to rent some replacements. But once in the lodge, we ran into one of our foolish friends who doesn’t understand why God invented chairlifts. He hikes up the hill early in the morning and gets his skiing done before the more enlightened of us start riding the lifts. Anyway, we borrowed his poles and headed back out. With each run, we knew we were getting one more run closer to the end. I started to savor each turn and tried to get the most out of each descent. Finally, it was time. The last run of the season was here. It’s always anticlimactic. You feel like there should be some sort of acknowledgement that the season is over, but there never is. You get to the bottom and take your skies off like it’s just the end of a normal ski day. Afterward, we went to the Gin Mill for our usual burger and beer. We rehashed the season and our upcoming spring plans when our waitress Krista informed us that she just heard that the Valley is going to reopen next weekend. Now, we get to have a second last day of the season! This just might be the ski season that never ends.

1.9% ($125,000) is what will be collected through property taxes to pay for school business, meaning the school is staying under the 2% tax cap. Superintendent Mark Ward emphasized that this year’s budget brings with it a very high academic value. Instead of simply adjusting budgets to cover increased expenses, as has been necessary over the past several years, this year the school has been able to enhance school programming. New items in the budget for 2015-16 include: adding an elementary teacher to the staff in order to be able to offer three sections of Kindergarten and first grade next year; developing our own districtrun middle school special education program to meet the educational needs of our students; purchasing 200 new laptops to ensure that all students in grades 9-12 are equipped for the challenges and opportunities ahead

Plus, we had the hill almost to ourselves. We quickly started to rack up vertical. We were having a great time and didn’t want to stop. But one of the Idiots had a different idea. Now this particular member of the group has a reputation for not falling on the slopes, but once he’s standing still in the lift line, all bets are off. We were getting on Cascade lift when, for no apparent reason, he stuck his pole in front of me before the metal body positioning bars. My forward motion bent his pole into a perfect 90-degree angle. The lifties even stopped the lift to laugh and ask, “How did you do that?” By the way, once a pole is bent, there is no straightening without breaking, so we headed

the windy Spruce chairlift to the race start by Spruce Lake. There were and are two distances to choose from—3.5 miles (sign me up!) or 5.4 miles (not quite there yet!). Everyone was friendly, sharing a common bond of being freezing cold, as we lined up at the start. When the horn sounded, off we went. Jamey and I started out at an easy pace, heading around the lake and to the first obstacle: “lily pads” lined up in a row in the water. To get over the lily pads, you could choose to do one of two things: run over them and hope you didn’t lose your footing and fall into the cold water, or crawl over them at a much slower clip. Being that this was the first obstacle in my first ever obstacle race, I opted to crawl, and slowly, but surely, made my way across. From there, we navigated through the very mucky woods, splashing in puddles along the way to various other obstacles. Some were easy— giant logs across a mud puddle that you would choose to go over and stay dry or go under and get wet. Others were more difficult—heaving yourself over a hay bale using a rope. I was pretty sure the point of others, such as climbing through drippy tunnels, was just to get wet and muddy. The course took runners in and out of the woods and along the ridgeline. I got a bit disoriented without snow on the ground, but I think we started to head downhill somewhere along the top of Eagle, meandering back toward the Morningstar lift, over Mardi Gras and ending up where we started at Yodeler. Yes, this meant very minimal uphill. (Looking for some uphill? Those choosing the 5.4 mile course get re-routed to a course that veers off for some vertical challenge.)
The last obstacle was not really an obstacle at all, but rather a giant Slip-N-Slide that sent people down the bottom of Yodeler into a giant mud puddle. If you weren’t covered in mud before that point, there was no escaping it now! From there, the finish line was right there, and as you passed through, you were awarded with a very cool finisher’s medal, great for displaying at home. Jamey and I weren’t taking the race too seriously, and we managed to get in lots of chatting during the (many) parts that we walked. But, for those who are in it for the competition, awards are given to the top three males and females in the chip-timed race. After taking a break and telling my kids all about my adventure, it was their turn to compete in the half-mile-long kids’ race. With a registration fee of only $5, it was a bargain to enter. It included a couple of small obstacles and ended on the same Slip-N-Slide, where my kids could enjoy the giant mud puddle, as well. After hosing off using the frigid snow guns, it was time to eat. We enjoyed a barbecue on
the Champagne Sundeck and laughed about what we had just experienced. Fair warning: don’t wear anything you’re too attached to. I wore some old sneakers that have never quite recovered, and that rainbow tutu—well, sadly, it had to be tossed after the race. The Mudslide is wildly popular and for good reason— it’s insanely entertaining! Because of that, if you’re thinking about signing up, don’t wait. There is a maximum of 1,200 competitors. Register for either distance by June 1 for $60 or by June 19 for $80. Race day registration is not available. Registration also includes a goody bag, that awesome finisher’s medal, plus a hot dog and two beers (or other beverages) at the postrace party. The Kids’ Race is still only $5 (up to age 12) with same-day registration only at the Yodeler Deck. Guests can also browse the Vendor Village with appearances by The City Garage, Do-Op Gear, Power Bar, Red Bull and more. I knew it would be muddy. I knew it would be a workout. But I had no idea it would be so much fun! So much fun that this year, I’ve convinced my whole family to join me in the 3.5 mile race. As I climb over the rope ladder wall or slosh through puddles, I hope to see you next to me, covered in mud. Holiday Valley and Mercy Flight teamed up this winter to create a fun event that not only raised money, but also raised awareness for the local emergency helicopter service. During the Winter Carnival and Pond Skimming events, 500 rubber ducks were sold for $10 each. The plan was to drop the ducks from the Mercy Flight helicopter over a target pond and the owner of the duck that landed in the pond would split the funds 50/50 with Mercy Flight. However, weather and turbulence prevented the helicopter from flying, so the Holiday Valley crew went to “Plan B.” On Saturday, April 4, the 500 ducks were launched into the creek in front of the Holiday Valley Lodge. With the warm spring weather, the water was running high and the ducks quickly made their way to the finish line downstream. Duck number 202 swam right into the target, earning his owner, Andrew Creager $2,500! Mercy Flight also received $2,500 from the event.

The newly-formed Southern Tier West Regional Farmers Market network has partnered with Cornell University Cooperative Extension to present a comprehensive workshop opportunity specifically designed for managers and vendors of farmers markets, and farmers and food producers who operate farm stands. The four-hour workshop takes place on Thursday, April 16 beginning at 11 a.m. and will feature a live webinar session with John Luker, Assistant Director for the Division of Food Safety and Inspection of the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. Also presenting in person are Robert Hadad, vegetable specialist with Cornell
University, and representatives from health departments in Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua Counties. The workshop will present information on safe food handling and storage from the farm to the farmers market or farm stand. Topics that will be covered include how food safety begins on the farm, best practices to handle produce and fresh food at farmers markers and farm stands, requirements for home processed foods, labeling and packaging regulations, and safe food tastings and demonstration regulations. Sure-fire Signs That You’ve Been Married a Very Long Time According to WME, the faith-based Worldwide Marriage Encounter, Canada’s Longest Married Couple lives in Parry Sound, Ontario and they’re doing pretty well. (This is not to be confused with the couple who lives a few doors down from me and holds the title of Canada’s Loudest Married Couple. “Hearing aids,” I want to yell “will change your lives.” I said, “HEARING AIDS WILL ... never mind.” The Parry Sound couple earned the honour for longevity by getting married in the 1930s and sticking it out for 80 years. To put that in perspective, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and 10 other countries could not manage to stay together over the last 80 years. Back in 1934, when they were married in Toronto, Clem was 20-years-old and Millie was only 15, which made it a “robbing the cradle” kind of relationship. Now 81 years later and looking back, it’s more of a “ransacking the rocking chair” kind of thing. Clem was rather shocked to hear that they have received the WME’s award for marital longevity: “It’s hard to believe that no one else would achieve that.” Really, Clem? Because today 41 percent of all Canadian marriages end in divorce and some are over right after the wedding bells stop and the bills start rolling in. I mean, c’mon Clem, back when you got married, a marriage license didn’t come with an expiry date, did it? There are certain advantages to being married for more than 80 years, the most obvious being that you have no peers. When it comes to the institution of marriage itself, all other couples might as well be newlyweds. Plus in that kind of timeline, you could go without speaking to each other for a decade or two, and in the
long run, it would have little affect on the relationship. How many couples can brag about a cute little flower girl who’s 86 years old today? Until 2011, title holders for the World’s Longest Marriage were America’s Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher, who divorced once the children were in their 70s and finally out of the family home. Herb and Zel were only staying together until the tykes were out on their own and comfortably established in nursing homes. Larry King thought they should be awarded the longest married title until WME officials explained to him that it wasn’t based on an aggregate. It had to be with one woman, not eight. Here then are some sure-fire signs you and your better half have been married a very, very long time ... • You never get tired of referring to him as your “awful wedded husband” and he loves to tell people that for your bridal shower you were registered at Woolworth’s Five And Dime. • You remember when ‘shake, rattle and roll’ had something to do with dancing and not just trying to get out of bed in the morning. • You’re both okay with getting shorter as you get older, but you wished his stories would follow suit. • You’ve become so comfortable with each other that she no longer lies about her age and you only trim four or five shots off your golf score. • You’re both in your mid90s and you haven’t had an argument for almost 50 years because you haven’t heard a word the other said since the ‘72 Canada/Soviet series. • You notice in the last few years he’s started to pick on you because there’s only so many things you can blame on the government. • You’ve always appreciated
his guidance and advice, but you’re getting a little tired of him quietly taking you aside and ... just leaving you standing there. • In the last while you’ve noticed that even when he is listening, he still manages to get it wrong. • He’s 85 now and you always hoped that with advanced age would come wisdom and tolerance, not just bigger and better blue flamers. • You both feel 10 years younger now that you’re taking a nap every night before bed. • Of course you both feel really grown-up but damn, but you just wish you hadn’t become so mature. • You celebrated 50 years of marriage with two minutes of silence because after a half century of being together, that’s exactly what both of you wanted. • You still believe marriages are made in heaven, it’s just that most should be fitted with airbags. • You like that law of averages that says you’ll out live your husband by seven years because you’ll need at least that much time to find the damn will. • You know you’ve been together for a very long time when your hot flashes are now lukewarm and his cold shoulder has become a place where you go to cry. alarm response, an elevator rescue, a low hanging power line, two requests to set up landing zones for emergency medical helicopters and three motor vehicle accidents – one involving a volunteer firefighter. For the ambulance service, it was equally hectic with 13 ambulance calls and 10 transports of patients to area hospitals. The dedicated individuals who responded to these emergencies are all volunteers who donate their time to keep the rest of us safe. And there aren’t enough of them. On Saturday, April 25, from 1-4 p.m., the Ellicottville Fire Department is hosting an open house at the Fire Hall at 30 Fillmore Drive. This is an opportunity for everyone – men, women and children – to learn more about volunteering as a firefighter, ambulance driver or emergency medical technician (EMT), pick up some fire prevention and safety tips, enjoy some refreshments, take a ride on a fire truck and get to know the dedicated individuals who already serve their community. It’s also an opportunity to make one of the most valuable contributions you can make to your community – become a volunteer. Morgan Manfreda made the decision to volunteer just over a year ago when she joined the Little Valley Fire Department. She had recently relocated to the area from Erie County, where she worked for the Western New York Developmental Disabilities Services Office, taking a new position as a development support assistant with the DDSO at a group home in Little Valley. During an ambulance call for a resident of the group home, Manfreda met Little Valley’s fire chief, who suggested she
come visit the fire hall to learn what volunteering is all about. It didn’t take much convincing, she said, noting that “helping people and giving back has been a life-long interest.” After completing her training in Little Valley, Manfreda started meeting people with the EVL Fire Department and decided to volunteer there. “I’ve always been drawn to the Ellicottville,” she said, explaining that she will be moving to the town or village in the near future. “I’ve never met a better group of people,” she said of both the fire department and the whole community. “It’s like having a new family.” The work has been so fulfilling, in fact, that Manfreda is now training to become an EMT and will do double duty on ambulance and fire department calls. Fortunately for Ellicottville, Manfreda is one of five EFD volunteers currently training to become EMTs. And these professionals are sorely needed. Every time the fire department gets a call to respond to a structure fire, an EMT must respond as well, explained Ellicottville Fire Chief Kevin Morton. And, of course, every ambulance response must have an EMT on board, plus a driver. “Many years ago, the EFD had 70-80 volunteers and a waiting list,” says Morton, who, by the way, is also a volunteer. “Now we’re down to just over 40.” There are many reasons for the drop in membership – an aging population and an exodus of younger people, to name a few. And it’s a problem all over the country. But in Ellicottville, the need has increased significantly as the four-season vacation community in the area grows. “During the winter,” Morton
says, “we average 7-10 fire calls and 30-40 ambulance calls each week. We’re often going from one call to the next without a break in between, or splitting crews in order to get to everyone.” Another challenge is that people seem to be busier between careers, families and other commitments. “Most of our volunteers have full-time jobs,” said Morton, who is an employee of the Ellicottville Department of Public Works. “We know work has to come first,” he says, and employers are not always able to spare employees in the middle of their work day to allow them to respond to emergencies. “We work around this all the time and are very flexible, so this shouldn’t stop anyone from volunteering on their own time,” he said. But it’s another “reason we need more people to fill in the gaps.” While Manfreda is an athletic and physically fit person, Morton says athleticism is not a requirement. Volunteers do all sorts of work – from directing traffic and driving trucks or ambulances, to handling hoses and helping lift patients. “Most people can be of help, no matter their physical strength,” Morton says. No one does anything without the necessary training, of course, and new volunteers are given plenty of time to complete training requirements. So, if you can give back to the community by volunteering with this exceptional group of people, stop in at the Fire Hall on the 25th (or any time) and pick up an application.
