It’s said that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. This year, it also covers St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, the end of winter, the beginning of spring, school spring break, and countless activities in between now and the end of March. Read on to see what EVL has in store. There’s still plenty of winter left in Ellicottville, which translates to plenty of fun on the slopes! On Friday, Feb. 26, head to Holiday Valley for Telestock, a day of peace, love and teleskiing. This event, sponsored by City Garage, features free rentals and a day of all things teleski with the pros. On Sunday, Feb. 28, Holiday Valley hosts Aspire’s Ski the Valley to benefit children and adults with disabilities in WNY. The event is presented by Independent Health and takes place from noon to 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come listen to music and check out the awesome basket raffle on the top floor of the Lodge. Head to Allegany State Park on Sunday, Feb. 28 for the Art Roscoe Loppet XC ski races. 6K, 13K & 22K Classic XC Skiing is the order of the day as this annual tradition continues to attract skiers from all over. ECS Team Completes Impressive Season

This past Sunday, U14/U12/ U10/U8 athletes traveled to Buffalo Ski Club in Colden, NY, for the final race of the season.
The race was a Kombi event, a blend of Giant Slalom and Slalom, which is unique to this age division. After the race the U14 Niagara Frontier Ski Council
State Team was named. The State Team consists of 14 boys and 14 girls; they qualified based on their place points earned all season. Congratulations to Hayly Fredrickson and Alec Nolan for taking the top spots on the team. The following men made the team from Holiday Valley as well. Village Elections March 15 By Jann Wiswall
With presidential elections bombarding the news every day, it may not even be on your radar that there is an election coming up for residents of the Village of Ellicottville. But there is and, as always, it’s important to vote. The election will take place on Tuesday, March 15 at the Ellicottville Town Center (the
former Cornell Cooperative Extension Service building). Polls will be open from noon until 9 p.m. The positions of Village mayor and two four-year seats on the board of trustees will be decided. Current Mayor Charles Coolidge is running for reelection to a fourth consecutive four-year term.
He is running as a Republican and as a “People’s Choice” candidate. He is being challenged by former Town Supervisor John Burrell, who is running as a “New Village” candidate. Two incumbent board members, Republicans Patra Lowes and Bob Brogcinski, are running for reelection. “New See Elections page 2
Incomplete Plans Stall Brewpub By Jann Wiswall
The Town of Ellicottville’s Planning Board has been unable to approve site plans for the proposed Stillhouse Brewpub at 6600 Rt. 219 despite months of review. The board took up the matter again at its February 22 meeting, when town
engineer Mark Alianello explained that the revised site plan provided by Stillhouse’s project engineer still does not meet the town’s requirements, nor does it answer outstanding questions. Issues remain with lighting, drainage, parking space sizes, driveway width, snow storage, the scale of the
plans themselves and more. The project has been on the planning board’s agenda since August 2015. It also must be approved for zoning variances by the Zoning Board of Appeals, which cannot proceed without proper plans. Alianello said that, despite See Town Planning Board page 3

“making every effort to help him� both verbally and in writing, the Stillhouse engineer still “doesn’t seem to understand what the planning board needs.� The board explained to Bill Bursee, owner of the proposed restaurant/distillery, that it supports the project but that it will not put the site plan review back on the agenda until adequate, approvable plans are presented. As such, the project review was tabled. Trail Heights Moves Forward The Trail Heights Subdivision preliminary plat plan application, which
was ďŹ rst presented to the Planning Board last month, was deemed complete by the Planning Board on Monday. The board set a public hearing on the project for its March 28 meeting. Trail Heights is a new 14lot housing development on 70 acres across Poverty Hill Rd. from the planned 42 Degrees North (42DN) resort community. The east side of the new development abuts the town’s conservation district. The road and a community trail will be maintained through a Homeowners Association. The Homeowners Association manual must be
provided for planning board review and then must be submitted to the State Attorney General’s ofďŹ ce for approval. In other business, Town of Ellicottville Supervisor Matt McAndrew attended the meeting to let the board know that he is committed to improving communications between all of the town’s boards by sharing agendas and minutes. The meeting was the ďŹ rst for new town planner Gary Palumbo. The next meeting of the planning board will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 28 at the town/village hall.

Recently, I was asked to do a presentation on the topic, “Mind, Body and Spirit,” for the heads of the departments at Holiday Valley. A friend of mine had been assigned the task, but after doing some research on the topic he felt the information he was to deliver did not fit his comfort zone. So, he said he was calling an expert in to do the presentation. That compliment alone was enough for me to say, “YES!” So I began to research the topic and found it both fascinating and overwhelming. According to About.com and Healthy Living, “Mind, Body and Spirit” works as a system of energy. This energy can be abundant or restricted depending on our ‘state of being’ in each moment and it

is constantly changing. It’s like a continuous circle; we can either facilitate this energy flow or go against the flow causing our circle to stop rolling along smoothly. The more I researched, the more I found that basically, all the sites seemed to say the same thing – that in order to keep your energies in alignment, you were to meditate, do yoga, take a spiritual journey and heal your soul. While that may be a good path for some, it may not be the right path or a comfortable path for others. So, I looked at my presentation as an opportunity to show how important the concept of “Mind, Body and Spirit” is and for other ways to get all aspects of our health back to a smooth and enjoyable place. I looked for real life examples and shared personal stories of mishaps and misfortunes. I explained that bad things can happen to good people, and oftentimes we all feel like we cannot tolerate one more crisis. I said that sometimes, taking care of our bodies with the proper diet and exercise (any exercise) is not enough. We need the mental and spiritual aspects to keep us strong and healthy as well, because when our emotional states are in flux, physical
imbalances and illnesses are likely to surface. Then, I looked for alternatives to realigning your circle and making it healthy again. Meditation is not for me; the answer for me has always been a long walk in the woods, alone, with just the sounds and scents of nature. This is my meditation. For others, it’s a brisk walk, a bicycle ride or skiing until your legs ache. Another simple technique is to take a deep breath and focus on your posture. According to a Harvard Health publication, breath-focus is a common feature of several techniques that evoke the relaxation response. The first step is learning to breathe deeply. Deep abdominal breathing encourages full oxygen exchange — that is, the beneficial trade of incoming oxygen for outgoing carbon dioxide. Not surprisingly, it can slow the heartbeat and lower or stabilize blood pressure. At the end of the day, realize that you alone are in charge of your happiness. You alone can treat yourself and others with love and respect. Mind, Body and Spirit is your reality each and every day. Be mindful of this. In the long run, it’s the best therapy out there.

Creek, N.Y., was a fun place where many skiing families made some fantastic memories they still look back on with fondness. Nicholas Barnes and a group of associates founded Cockaigne Ski Area in 1966 as an all-year resort. Its most notable feature was its distinctive main base ski lodge – the former Austrian Pavilion at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair which was disassembled, moved and reassembled at the ski area in 1966. You couldn’t miss the A-frame’s three huge arches. The inside was appointed with an interesting round fireplace, a bar and a cafeteria, as well as a rental shop. The resort’s future plans called for a golf course, artificial lake and bridle paths. Those features never materialized. Victor Anderson worked at the Cockaigne Ski School off and on for about 25 years beginning in 1967. At the time, Franz Elsigan of Ellicottville, who was a former Austrian ski jumper, ran the ski school and ski shop. “Cockaigne was a great area for learning to ski. None of the hills were very steep and there was a lot of beginner/ intermediate terrain,” said Anderson. “Trails were lighted at night and kids had a great time without getting into very
much trouble. If you wanted a challenge, you had to sneak into the woods or find the small patch of bumps on the steepest part of the hill.” Events for all ages, including the Christmas Race Camp, NASTAR clinics and other happenings, made Cockaigne a great place for families. Hard times hit in the late 1960s and, on Feb. 8, 1970, the Buffalo Courier Express reported that John C. Van Scoter of Fredonia and Jack Dean of Mayville purchased Cockaigne from the bank, which had acquired it in a foreclosure action the previous fall. Despite the resort’s finances, ski seasons continued for many more years. A variety of ski groups and families came to ski every weekend from Ohio and surrounding areas. “Cockaigne had a great family atmosphere, because everyone had been going there for so long,” remembered Hannes Dziak, who was a ski instructor at Cockaigne in the late ‘90s. Sadly, on Jan. 24, 2011, a devastating fire ravaged the lodge, rendering it unusable. The New York National Guard was scheduled to deliver a massive tent to be used as temporary warming shelter for the remainder of that season, but then government officials determined that Cockaigne did
not qualify for this assistance. Instead, in early February, Jamestown Awning stepped in and donated a 40-foot by 60-foot tent that became the temporary base facility. Food and beverages were offered from the Falconer Food Service truck, and Jamestown Ice & Storage loaned materials, equipment and picnic tables. Meanwhile, other ski areas including Holiday Valley, HoliMont and Peek n’ Peak, pitched in to help provide rental ski equipment and community donors too numerous to mention helped fill in the gaps. These efforts kept skiing and boarding going through the end of that season. But the next year was too much for the resort. Between a dismal 2010-11 weather season, vandalism and a burglary that summer, and no ski lodge, Cockaigne was shuttered and its fondly remembered gemutlichkeit came to an end. The ski area was put up for sale and has generated interest but no buyers to date. In September 2013, thieves struck again and made off with snowmaking equipment, including a snow gun estimated to cost in the thousands. Despite the recent events, many uplifting memories remain. Anderson said the

Springtime is around the corner, the time of year that we all look anxiously for, as we dream about the longer sunshine-ďŹ lled days, the green grass, blooming owers, and warmer temperatures. But for our pets, the spring can also mean increased visits to the veterinarian, both for annual preventative visits to prepare your pet for springtime diseases, as well as emergency visits due to the increasing number of hazards the spring has to offer our pets! Firstly, our pets begin to get out of the house, just as we do, as the weather warms. We are more likely to take our dog to the dog park, out for a long walk or on a hike, increasing the chance of our dogs coming into contact with other dogs. This can result in an increased number of dog ďŹ ghts, bites and contagious diseases, both respiratory and intestinal.
So be cautious with your social, curious dog as you visit your favorite spots. Keep him or her on a leash, and have him/ her get their vaccinations for diseases endemic to the area. For cats, this also is a time for increased exposure to other cats, very commonly resulting in bites. Bites in cats are far more dangerous than in dogs, as cats have considerably more bacteria in their mouths. These bites can result in infections called abscesses that must treated by your veterinarian, and they can also carry deadly diseases like feline leukemia! So please, get your cats vaccinated before an emergency so they can be best prepared to ďŹ ght off diseases they could be exposed to! Secondly, as the thaw occurs, we see far more exposure of pets to trash left behind during the winter, as well as to animal carcasses. Exposure to these hazards can cause internal parasites and life threatening intestinal blockages and infections. So please, do a spring clean up before allowing your pet to roam on your property, and when off on a hike, keep your pets close to you so you can watch what they put in their mouths! Thirdly, springtime means more plant growth, which means pets can be exposed to toxic plants, leading to anything from mild reactions to severe illnesses. Keep the
ASPCA’s list of toxic plants close so you are aware of what plants to stay away from. Fourthly, springtime also means your pets are exposed to more insects, which can result in bites causing severe allergic reactions. If you notice your pet suddenly has a swollen face or ear, call your veterinarian immediately. It’s also a good idea to have Benadryl or other antihistamine around at all times. Also, it’s important to keep your pet protected from ticks, can carry many deadly diseases such as Lyme disease. Ask your veterinarian for tick prevention medications. Finally, ask your vet for heartworm prevention, which is now recommended year round in many states. These deadly parasites have many life cycles and can be missed for many months. Be proactive in preventing all of these springtime hazards from keeping you and your pet from having a terriďŹ c spring!

March 11-13 is Mardi Gras and Winter Carnival weekend, where an actionpacked weekend awaits. Kick off the weekend with the Junior Bacchus Ball sponsored by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ellicottville Brewing Company. Tickets are $20 and dress is ski casual. During the Ball, candidates for King and Queen will give a quick speech on why they should be Mardi Gras royalty. Coronation will also take place. There will be music, food and a cash bar. Get your tix at www.ellicottvilleny. com. Of course, the weekend will also feature parades in both the village (6:30 p.m. on Saturday) and at HV (noon on Sunday), so wear your beads and bring your smile. Holiday Valley’s Winter Carnival is a guaranteed great time, complete with the snow sculptures created by the talented HV employees, cookouts, costume contests and more. Head back to Holiday Valley the following weekend (March 19-20) for the annual Pond Skimming weekend. Sign up to skim across an ice-water ďŹ lled pond or just watch and cheer for your fave competitors. Registration will be outside Yodeler Lodge starting at 11 a.m. for $5. Kids under 18 must have a parent’s signature, minimum age is 8
years old. Pond Skimming starts about 1 p.m. and prizes are awarded for Best Skimmer, Best Costume, Best Kid and Best Splash. All participants get a one-day pool pass for the Holiday Valley pool complex to be used this summer. Music, a mini-snowbar with margaritas and beer specials, barbeque and more add to the fun! On Sunday, March 20, take part in Holiday Valley’s Northwind Super-G. Register at the Training Center for $5 per racer. Training runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Rangers race at 11 a.m., everyone else races at 12:30 p.m. For those who like to ski or ride under the stars, night skiing at Holiday Valley is available through Saturday, March 19. Twilight skiing is available March 20-26 and after that, the lifts close at 4:30 p.m. Late in the season is also a great time to explore HV’s XC ski and snowshoe trails along the golf course and at the ridgeline by Spruce Lake. The Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster operates from 11a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday, and holidays, weather permitting. Mardi Gras Food Drive for Ellicottville Food Bank
Again I am asking for your help in filling boxes and bags at Tops market with many needed items. The Holiday Ski Patrol is again collecting non-perishables food items such as canned food products, pastas, bottled drinks, food products in sealed bags (not frozen). We also need paper products, toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, napkins, and cleaning supplies, and finally, toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, hand and face soap. As you can see, with your help, we can fill many boxes and bags so that the food bank can provide your donated items to many needy families. Also, please come and meet Daniel Buchanan who is now “the man” in charge of this year’s food drive. Ski Patroller, Daniel Buchanan is a teacher in Buffalo and has been on the Holiday Valley Ski Patrol for a number of years. Now we also want to remind you that we are giving out great Mardi Gras beads for your donations. And we all know that coming to a Mardi Gras weekend without beads, well, it just should not happen. Yes, we will also accept cash donations, as those in need often need assistance with heating bills and other services that require payment when received. So please, “dig a little deeper” so that your gift will help those in need. Remember, there is the Mardi Gras parade on Saturday just after 6:30 p.m. in downtown Ellicottville. The Ski Patrollers in their red jackets with white crosses will be on both sides of the parade route asking for any final donations and yes, a string of beads will be given for your donation. If you are unable to see us at Tops or during the parade, then you can take your donations to our partner, Liz Boeberg, at the AmeriCan, here in town, any time, and Liz will see that your donations reach the food bank. As ski patrollers, we have a saying, “a passion for skiing and compassion for people.” Please show your compassion and give the Ski Patroller a donation as they walk each side of the parade route. ECS Alpine Team at NYS Championships On February 22-23, the Ellicottville Central School’s Alpine Race Team competed at Whiteface in Lake Placid, NY, for the New York State Championships. Day one was a Slalom race and day two was Giant Slalom and, as usual, Whiteface lived up to its notorious nickname, “Ice Face.” “Both days the conditions were icy and we had a few falls along the way, but all athletes got up and finished the race,” said head coach Kelly Fredrickson. Congratulations to all of the ECS athletes for a wonderful season! Results were as follows: Women’s Slalom: Hayly Fredrickson 15th, Logan Fredrickson 18th and Shelby Toth 41st. Born on July 4, 1932, in Salamanca, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Hannah Whalen Ward. She was married on May 25, 1957, in St. Patrick’s Church, Salamanca, to Franklin Graczyk, who predeceased her on Nov. 18, 2010. Mrs. Graczyk was a homemaker. Prior to her marriage she had worked at Taylor’s Five & Dime Store
in Ellicottville and she did inhome child care for more than 10 years. She was a member of the former St. Patrick’s Church and Our Lady of Peace Parish, Salamanca. She was a charter member of the Great Valley Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary and the Ellicottville American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was a Board of Elections inspector in Great Valley for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed her dogs,
music and dancing. Surviving are a daughter, Eileen Hostuttler of Great Valley; a son, Leo Graczyk of Sherman; and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by four brothers, John Ward, Thomas Ward, William Ward and James Ward; and a sister, Katherine Ward. Services were held Feb. 23. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Chautauqua County SPCA or the Great Valley Ambulance Service.
Alan Harding 1997-2016 Alan L. Harding, 18, of 2673 28 Mile Creek Road, Gerry, died unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, the result of a tragic accident at his home. Alan was a senior at Cassadaga Valley Central School and had earlier been a student at Maple Grove Central School. He had a passion for all things outdoors, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, farm work, and shooting trap. His Chautauqua County AIM Team won 1st place in the 2015 NYS Academics, Integrity and Marksmanship Team Championship held in Cicero last summer, with the team receiving recognition at the
recent Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame Awards Banquet. Alan poured his heart into everything he did and was never satisfied until he accomplished his goals, whether it was mastering a skill or building something with his own hands. He had a heart of gold, and anyone who knew him, loved him. He will be missed dearly by both his family and friends. Alan was born Aug. 15, 1997 in Jamestown, the son of Rick and Diane Harding with whom he resided. Also surviving are his sister, Danyelle Harding; maternal grandmother, Marilyn Soehnlein of Gerry and paternal grandmother, Sharon
Whitmore of Frewsburg; as well as aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Ronald Soehnlein and Leonard Harding. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bemus Point. The Rev. John L. Kuhlmann and the Rev. Todd Remick were celebrants. Memorials may be made to a scholarship in Alan’s honor being established at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, 418 Spring St., Jamestown, NY 14701.
Donna Woodarek 1960-2016 Donna M. Woodarek, 55, of Ellicottville passed away Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016 at her home. She was born Oct. 5, 1960 in Buffalo, NY the daughter of the late Thomas “PeeWee” and Shirley( Blake) Kresconko. On June 19, 1981 she married Justin Woodarek, who survives. Mrs. Woodarek was a longtime employee of Holiday Valley, working as the Night Rental Shop Manager, and also
worked at Sky High at Holiday Valley. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son Dustin (Ashley) Woodarek of Great Valley, a daughter, Jaimie Woodarek, of Ellicottville, and three grandchildren, Maelyn, Ava and Hunter. Also surviving is a sister Karen (Mike) Suppa of Tennessee, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Sharon Marien. Friends may call on Sunday

It’s time to join the gang at the Yodeler/ Champagne Shelter at Holiday Valley, for the 16th Annual Ken Brown 700 Club Fundraising Party on Saturday, March 5, at noon.

Ken Brown founded the 700 Club in 2000 with himself and nine ski buddies who were all turning 70. Ken believed in good times and laughter, but was happiest when he could give back to the community by helping others. In his eccentric style, he lived life to the fullest and part of that fullness was giving from the heart to his friends and those in need. Ken has gone to Ski Heaven, as have several others of the original 10, but Ken’s vision has continued and the tradition lives on. “Help Us Help Others” is the motto of the Ken Brown 700 Club whose sole purpose is to have a yearly Fundraising Party to raise funds for local charitable organizations. The club has donated more than $50,000 from their fundraisers over the years, with 12 different organizations being the recipients. From 10 members in 2000, the club has grown to more than 60 members this year and more are joining all the time. There are no meetings; just pay your dues of $50 a year and you’re in. The only requirement for membership is to be 70 or over. Under 70? Associate Members are welcome for $25. Call Dave Jones at 699-8335 for more information on membership. This year’s fundraiser will include food and beverages for a donation of $10, a 5050 Draw and Live and Silent Auctions. Prizes for the Live and Silent Auctions are generously donated by area businesses and individuals. Local art, gift baskets, ski passes, clothing and equipment, gift certificates and bottles of wine are a few of the great auction items. Call Les Fox at 945-1176 if you have something you would like to donate. Come at noon, enjoy lunch and bid on the silent auction. The live auction with Bob McCarthy at the microphone starts at 1 p.m. It’s a good time for all so bring the gang to the Ken Brown 700 Club Fundraising Party, Saturday, March 5th at noon at the Holiday Valley Yodeler/Champagne Shelter, which Holiday Valley has so generously allowed us to use.

Notice of Annual Meeting – The Ellicottville Memorial Library Board of Directors will hold its annual meeting in the library at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2. The public is invited to attend. President’s Day Book Sale – The annual February Book Sale has begun and will continue through mid-March. Lots of great novels, paperbacks and children’s books. Artwork at the Library – We are featuring artwork created by Ellicottville Central School students in Kindergarten, first and second grades and by the Studio Art class. The Library extends a special “thank you” to art teacher Lillian Lechner for sharing her student’s creations. Meteors, Meteorites, Craters and Comets, March 1– Do rocks really fall from the heavens? We’ll be talking about “shooting stars” and meteorites. We’ll also talk about four of the 170 documented craters here on earth, including the famous Meteor Crater in Arizona and the most recent in Tunguska, Siberia. And we’ll learn about those infrequent visitors to our part of the solar system, comets – where do they come from and how are they related to shooting stars, meteorites and craters? We’ll tie all of these together. The class will be led by long-time amateur astronomer Bert Probst and is structured for adults and young adults over the age of 16. There is no charge but attendance is limited to 15. Please call the library to register. Ukrainian Easter Eggs – Come join instructor Cathy Lacy on March 22 from 6-8 p.m. and learn to make Ukrainian Easter eggs using a method similar to batik. Class size limited. Ages 12 and up. $3 fee covers supplies. Registration required. Tax Forms – Most of the frequently used federal and NYS tax forms and instruction booklets are now available at the library. The library can also order forms for you; the IRS will mail them to you within 1-2 weeks. Adult Coloring –Join Cathy Lacy for a relaxing, stress-free, creative break in your day! Every Tuesday from 2-3 p.m. Free program; supplies provided. Book Club – Meets the first Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. The March 2 book is “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Hurston. Knitting (& Crochet) Club – The knitting club meets every Monday and alternates between evenings from 6-8 p.m. and afternoons from 2-4 p.m. All abilities welcome – just bring some yarn and your needles.
