New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade and Party – Dec. 31 A New Year’s Eve celebration starts your year off with a bang. It all begins at 9 p.m. and includes music and DJ entertainment in the Holiday Valley Lodge. Cindy’s chairlift remains open for an extended hour of night skiing, after which the Holiday Valley Mountain Crew wows spectators with their annual grooming machine parade on Cindy’s at 11:15 p.m. If you are an intermediate or more skilled skier, you can join the torchlight parade that kicks off at 11:30 p.m. The evening ends with a spectacular fireworks show at 11:45 p.m. Admission to the New Year’s party is free. The evening will also feature drinks, food specials and nonalcoholic mocktails for the younger crowd. Party hats, glow sticks and noisemakers add to the revelry. Canadian Friendship Week - Jan. 4-10 During this week, buy lift tickets and rent equipment at par when paying with Canadian cash or check at Holiday Valley. What a great deal! World’s Largest Ski and Snowboard Lesson – Jan. 8 January is Learn a Snowsport Month and resorts across the country are joining to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest ski/board lesson ever held. You can help break this world record by taking a free beginner lesson at 10 a.m. that day at Holiday Valley. The offer includes rental equipment and a lift ticket for beginner’s lifts. Snow has been sparse this year, but Ellicottville’s famous holiday cheer has been abundant. Just stroll the village sidewalks and admire storefronts decked out holiday-style, stop in for some wine or a flight of beer at a local establishment, shop for unique winter gear and gifts, or book a massage at one of the many spas. If Mother Nature responds to the local snow dance, skiers and boarders can look forward to a good time on the slopes. Holiday Valley Resort has been named the No. 3 Best Winter Resort in the East this year by readers of SKI magazine. Once winter gets its head in the game, you can head to the mountain for skiing, or boarding, and don’t forget to take a thrilling mountain coaster ride through the snowy forest near Tannenbaum slope while you’re there. Your family will love the many tubing lanes at Holiday Valley Tubing Park, located just a few minutes from the village. The snowmakers are standing by to blanket the slopes with the fluffy white stuff when the temperature cooperates. The largest private ski area in the U.S., HoliMont, is located in Ellicottville, too, and they’ve been busy making plans to bring winter to their members. Once they are open weekdays, the public can purchase day passes and enjoy a change of pace on the slopes. Think snow!

There’s no reason to be stuck indoors this winter, and even if you’re not the biggest
fan of the season, why not get out and have some muchdeserved fun? During the height of winter,
Jan. 22-24 will bring the annual, but newly renamed and revamped, Winter Blues and Brews weekend to the village. Formerly called Winter Blues Weekend, adding “Brews” to the name means the Buffalo Niagara Brewers Association will be in town to offer loads of great beer tasting opportunities as you try to shake off the winter doldrums. And what better way to enjoy the brews than while listening to the hottest blues bands around? Talented musicians from all See Blues and Brews page 2

State Funding Coming to Cattaraugus County Awards Include Money for Cattaraugus County Arts Council Staffer By Daniel Meyer
Funding awarded to entities located across the state as part of New York’s State of Opportunity campaign should spearhead efforts to encourage economic development

While this fundraiser to benefit children and adults with disabilities features activities for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, there are plenty of fun options for everyone who attends. First Day Hikes on New Year’s Day originated over 20 years ago at the Blue Hills Reservation, a state park in Milton, Mass. The program was launched to promote both healthy lifestyles throughout the year and year round recreation at state parks. So why not spend this New
Year’s Day hiking in beautiful Allegany State Park? Allegany State Park boasts a beautiful setting for yearround outdoor recreation. This year’s First Day Hike will offer an opportunity to explore the unique natural treasures Allegany has to offer. This self-guided hike will take place in the Summit area on the Red
House side of the park. The off-trail hike, approximately two miles in length and easymoderate in intensity, begins at the Summit Area Warming Hut, follows the scenic ridge line to Stone Tower, then continues back to the warming hut. Interpretative points of interest will be found along the way. Come listen to birds, breathe in the fresh air, discover wildlife tracks, feel the warmth of the sun or the coldness of the snow. First Day Hike runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will begin the hike at the Summit Warming Hut by picking up a trail map. Weather permitting, you are encouraged to bring your snowshoes, trekking poles, or anything else needed for an enjoyable hike. Appropriate dress and footwear are strongly encouraged. A Holiday Fitness Guide Part 1 of 2

With the holidays upon us, exercise is literally the last thing most of us are thinking about, let alone making extra time for. Instead of focusing on one strength training exercise, I’m going to show you how exercise in almost any form can act as a stress reliever. Being active can boost your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries. Virtually any form of exercise, from aerobics to yoga, can act as a stress reliever. If you’re not an athlete or even if you’re downright out of shape, you can still make a little exercise go a long way toward stress management. Discover the connection between exercise and stress relief — and why exercise
should be part of your stress management plan. Exercise and Stress Relief: Exercise increases your overall health and your sense of well-being, which puts more pep in your step every day. But exercise also has some direct stress-busting benefits. It pumps up your endorphins. Physical activity helps to bump up the production of your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins. Although this function is often referred to as a runner’s high, a rousing game of tennis or a nature hike also can contribute to this same feeling. It’s meditation in motion. After a brisk walk or a vigorous hour of skiing, you’ll often find that you’ve forgotten the day’s irritations and concentrated only on your body’s movements. As you begin to regularly shed your daily tensions through movement and physical activity, you may find that this focus on a single task, and the resulting energy and optimism, can help you remain calm and clear in everything that you do. It improves your mood. Regular exercise can increase self-confidence and lower the symptoms associated with mild depression and anxiety.

Exercise also can improve your sleep, which is often disrupted by stress, depression and anxiety. All this can ease your stress levels and give you a sense of command over your body and your life. A successful exercise program begins with a few simple steps: Consult with your doctor. If you haven’t exercised for some time and you have health concerns, you may want to talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise routine. Walk before you run. Build up your fitness level gradually. Excitement about a new program can lead to overdoing it and possibly even injury. Do what you love. Virtually any form of exercise or movement can increase your fitness level while decreasing your stress. The most important thing is to pick an activity that you enjoy. Examples include walking, dancing, jogging, bicycling, yoga, tai chi, skating, weightlifting, gardening and swimming Pencil it in. Although your schedule may necessitate a morning workout one day and an evening activity the next, carving out some time to move every day helps you make your exercise program an ongoing priority.

New Children’s Book by Ashlee Oakley Celebrates Post-Winter By Alicia Dziak
Yes, it’s true. Not everyone loves winter. And if you’re one of those people, why not celebrate what’s coming up next—spring? That’s exactly what Ashlee Oakley of Springville had in mind when she wrote her first book, What Will I Do When It’s Finally Spring? In this children’s book, a little girl and her hair imagine all the wonderful, colorful things they will do once it’s finally springtime. “I’ve always disliked winter, and I’d always be drawing and reading while other kids were playing outside (in the winter),” said Oakley. “I wanted to turn something bad into something hopeful.” So, last winter, she began writing and illustrating her first book. Oakley, a mother of four who still has one daughter at home, while the other three are in school, carved out time by making the process more of an activity than work. “My daughter doesn’t like to be outside in the winter either,” she noted. “She likes to draw too, so it was more like she would work on her drawings and I would work on mine.” While it took a few weeks to complete the story and illustrations, getting to a
finished product was more time-consuming. Oakley explained that the most challenging part of the process was “finding a way to publish it that was cost effective.” She said that many of the more popular selfpublishing sites, that require a minimum number of pages, don’t work well for illustrated children’s books. After looking into various options, Oakley decided on self-publishing her book through Anything Printed in Springville. “It’s two minutes away from me and they worked with me (throughout the process),” Oakley said.

Since then, “my husband and I have been selling it ourselves,” Oakley explained, adding that, while making some profit off the book would be nice, “I didn’t do this for the money.” Oakley hadn’t necessarily planned to create a book this year. “My favorite thing to do as a child was write out song lyrics and illustrate them,” she explained. She regularly wrote poetry and loved her art classes. “It was just natural that at one point, my writing and my art would come together.” And so they have, in 20 pages of original illustrations and upbeat, kid-friendly text. While Oakley dedicated the book to all four of her children, “my daughter Amelia is adamant that the girl in the book is her,” she laughed. What Will I Do When It’s Finally Spring? is available on Amazon in Kindle format and also directly from Oakley. Take a Winter Discovery Hike at the Nature Center Many people don’t realize how much there is to see in nature in the winter. On Wednesday, Dec. 30, you can join an Audubon Nature Center naturalist for a winter discovery hike to find out what is happening outside. On Dec. 26, head to Holiday Valley for Santa Jam at the base of Mardi Gras starting at 11 a.m. This event is open to skiers and boarders, open format. It will be a fun day of handrails, music and delicious hot dogs for only $5. Santa/elf/reindeer costumes and ugly Christmas sweaters encouraged but not required. Stay for the free giveaways, best trick and best costume awards. Helmets are required and, if you’re under age 18, you’ll need a parent’s signature. You can register that morning inside the Resort Services building starting at 9 a.m. New Year’s Eve wouldn’t be special without the annual, family-friendly New Year’s
Eve party at Holiday Valley Lodge on Dec. 31. The celebration starts at 8:30 with a ventriloquist, followed by DJ entertainment and more. Cindy’s chairlift plans to remain open for an extended hour of skiing, after which the Holiday Valley Mountain Crew will wow spectators with their annual grooming machine parade on Cindy’s. You can even join the torchlight parade, if you’re an intermediate or better skilled skier. Then say good-bye to 2015 while watching a spectacular ďŹ reworks show starting before midnight. Admission to the party is free. The evening will also feature drinks, food specials and non-alcoholic mocktails for the younger crowd. Party hats, glow sticks and noisemakers add to the fun. Hill area for a self-guided hike on the Red House side of the park. The off-trail walk is only about two miles long and easy to moderate in intensity with some minor inclines and declines. Just follow the old mountain bike trail to Stone Tower and make a loop back along the ridge to the parking area. There’s even a scavenger hunt along the way. The Glen Burn Trail townhouse project is being coordinated by Hillview Mews, LP, a Canadian investment team that has been very impressed with the great diversity of the marketplace, an indicator that Ellicottville continues to be a highly desirable place to live and own property. “The marketplace is extremely diverse,” said Jennifer McNally, who is serving as the project manager. “In fact, I don’t think we can have a much more diverse marketplace than what we have so far given we have owners who are from Canada, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and South Carolina. I honestly don’t believe we ever could have imagined such a diverse group for the first phase of this project.” According to McNally, more than $3 million was invested in Glen Burn Trail’s first phase, which saw the construction of nine townhomes, six of which have already been sold. The second phase, which calls for 13 townhomes to be built in what will feature a mix of twounit and three-unit buildings, should see construction start this spring. The third phase will see another 12 townhomes built, all of which will be duplexes. In all, including the three model homes, which will eventually be sold, Glen Burn Trail will feature 37 total townhomes, structures that are for sale beginning at $250,000 and ranging in size from 1,500 square feet to 2,000 square feet.
The project represents an exciting time for Hillview Mews, especially because it is the first of its kind in the Ellicottville area for the company. While there has been some chatter in the community about Hillview Mews considering other projects in the region, company officials say they are solely focused on the second phase of Glen Burn Trail and are not looking ahead. “Given the scope of this current project, we want to see this through and come to fruition before we make any commitments and spreading our eggs around into other baskets, so to speak,” said McNally. “We are very pleased with how things are coming along and look forward to seeing 37 townhomes spread out over nine buildings that will be wonderful living environments for whoever chooses to buy them.” McNally said some buyers have indicated their new purchase will be a year-round residence, while others have said their Glen Burn Trail property will be a seasonal home.
“I think what makes this project so unique and, as I said before, so very diverse is the different ideas and plans that our buyers have shared with us,” said McNally. “In some cases, you have people who really enjoy skiing and a lifestyle with outdoor recreation opportunities and they want to take advantage of that as much as possible by living in Ellicottville all year long, while others have said they want to have a seasonal residence and a place for family and friends to gather when everyone wants to get away for a bit and go on vacation somewhere that they are familiar with and comfortable with, and Ellicottville certainly offers all the comforts of home along with so much more that you just don’t find elsewhere.”
On the Main Drag The historic core of the village, located along Washington Street between Jefferson and Mill streets, has seen a surge in new businesses and renovations this year. At 16 Washington St., a full-service outdoor store, Adventure Bound onthefly, offers some of the coolest, smartest, most current equipment and gadgets for every outdoor lover, including a wide variety of kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and accessories. On Adventure Bound’s lower floor, the EVL snowboarding shop The Boardroom (located near Holiday Valley on Rt. 219) opened a second location The Boardroom on Main. Across the street at 11 Washington, another new store has opened. AmeriCan specializes in U.S. and Canadian-made men’s and women’s clothing, antiques and artwork and takes the opportunity to showcase local artists’ work. The Purple Doorknob, fondly known as the sock shop, is under new ownership. Check out the enormous variety of socks for all ages, plus gloves, jewelry and more in the purple building at 9 Monroe St. At 7 Monroe St., there’s a hopping new Italian eatery called Villaggio that has taken Ellicottville by storm. The popular spot with a lively bar scene serves “rustic Italian food” in a relaxed family setting and offers an extensive wine list. Last winter, Cadillac Jack’s relocated to 24 Monroe St. and has recently refined its dining and wine menu, while retaining everybody’s favorites (notably the “hot lips mussels”) from their former location. In the Village Centre complex, near the Kwik Fill at Washington and Mill streets, Gallery 14731 has opened and offers fine art, gifts and design consultation. A few doors down from the Gallery next to EVL Cheese is another newcomer, the Fran Charles Shop, which features a huge selection of scarves, women’s clothing, jewelry and more. And the Armor Inn, which faces Mill Street and the Wingate Hotel, continues to serve up delicious BBQ, brews and more. Ellicottville Square Off Fillmore Street in the Ellicottville Square complex on Bristol Lane, Core Performance Fitness moved to a bigger space in the complex (55 Bristol), and it’s old location is now home to a new carry-out and catering business called Wholesome Hideaway (33 Bristol). It specializes in dairy-free, gluten-free, peanutfree and other items that cater to people with special dietary needs and to those seeking healthful meal options. Two new housing developments are under construction next door and across Fillmore Street — the Glendale project, a townhouse community with nine buildings (18 units) on the east side, and Colton Corners, a 19-lot, single-family home subdivision, on the west side. Gateway to Ellicottville Improving the intersection of Routes 219 and 242 on the east side of Ellicottville (near the Tim Hortons property) has been a goal of town planners for many years. After all, it makes sense to welcome travelers from Canada, Niagara Falls, Buffalo and other points north
at the first major intersection into the village. Progress on that front has been made with the opening of Tim Hortons Café and Bake Shop a few years ago, this year’s opening of Groove Fitness at 6696 Rte. 219 N and the Ellicottville Indoor Golf Studio at 6633 Rte. 219 N, and several developers’ plans for apartments, building renovations and a new brewpub/distillery. Minutes Away Just a few minutes south of the village in Great Valley, there’s a great new home-style restaurant that’s a perfect place to stop for a bite on the way into town on Rt. 219. Katy’s Fly-In offers classic breakfast and lunch items and a full dinner menu with delicious daily specials. Also in Great Valley at 4707 Reacher Rd. is a new bakery/ breakfast/lunch spot called Rowland’s Country Kitchen. The restaurant also caters some pretty amazing baked goods. The new Slopeside Bar & BBQ restaurant opened last winter at 6089 Rt. 219 S at the bottom of Holiday Valley Road, just 128 steps from the Sunset chairlift. The restaurant specializes in freshly smoked and barbequed meats, steaks, soups and many other tummywarmers throughout the ski season. Just north of the village off Poverty Hill Road, developers are creating 42 Degrees North, a 144-acre resort. The resort, which features 24 lots on 5-8 acres each, will be a fourseason vacation-home property with tennis court, pool, lowimpact recreational trails and more. All but 10 lots have been reserved for future home construction. Resorts Both Holiday Valley and HoliMont have made and continue to make significant investments in their properties to enhance the resort experience for all visitors. Holiday Valley invested $4 million in 2015-16 projects and improvements at the resort. Its latest project is renovation of a former fast food restaurant on Rt. 219 at the bottom of Holiday Valley Rd. (across 219 from the Inn). By late winter, the building will house the offices of Holiday Valley Realty and Rental Management, complete with a drive-thru window for visitors to pick up keys. The realignment of Holiday Valley Road is the largest and most expensive of the resort’s recently completed projects. The new road improves access to the resort, parking, traffic circulation and pedestrian safety by rerouting the road above and around the main parking area, allowing pedestrians direct access to the base area. Other projects include installation of 37 new automated snow guns, addition of night lights on several slopes, new equipment for Sky High Adventure Park, new grooming equipment, ongoing renovation of the Inn, golf course improvements and more. HoliMont put $650,000 into improvements this year. Nearly half of that was invested into the resort’s power plant and snowmaking operations. The resort also has made a variety of improvements to the main chalet, chairlifts, Chipmunk and Rabbit’s Run beginner slopes and more. Members skiing the Sunset
area of the resort will get their first look at the first home built at the WestMont Ridge development. Eleven of the 31 lots offered are still available for purchase. Plus, HoliMont’s 18 new condominium buildings with four units each (72 total) are in the design and planning stages. Walkable EVL There’s a great new way to get into the village from HoliMont. A sidewalk! The NYS Department of Transportation completed the major project that included constructing the new sidewalk along Route 242 from HoliMont to the village, improving handicapped ramps at several village intersections and improving the intersection at Route 219/Elizabeth Street/ Fillmore Drive. We think you’ll agree that all this makes for a more walkable, navigable Ellicottville. Ellicottville Central School After years of planning, Ellicottville Central Schools held a ribbon cutting to officially open its new, $10-plus million renovation project that includes a new multi-purpose gymnasium, renovation of 10 classrooms, replacement of the elementary school’s ventilation systems, roof repairs and much more. Construction did not interrupt the school’s main purpose, however, and results on state assessment rankings prove it. ECS remains the highest ranked district, elementary school, middle school and high school in Cattaraugus County and has shown marked gains in almost every academic ranking category since last year. The district ranked No. 1 for the third year in a row for teacher experience in all of Western New York. New Leadership The Town of Ellicottville will swear in a new town supervisor in January. Matt McAndrew, who has worked with the Cattaraugus County Department of Public Works for 36 years, has a busy fouryear term ahead as the town continues its long-range plans to improve infrastructure and roads and lays out the welcome mat for new investors and developers as well as all of the town’s fans. New Local Laws Residents and visitors to Ellicottville should be aware of two new local laws that may affect them. In September, the Town of Ellicottville passed the Local Alarm Law that requires property owners to obtain annual permits for their alarm systems and to keep them in good working order. Its intent is to ensure that fire and police are able to contact property owners if their alarms go off, either due to a true emergency or a false alarm. It is also intended to reduce the number of false alarms, which are a burden on local fire and police departments. In the village of Ellicottville, a law requiring “owners and occupants of land to cut, trim or remove brush, grass, rubbish and weeds” was amended to allow the village to fine and/or place a lien on real property if the village itself must mow or remove rubbish and brush on properties that are vacant or poorly maintained. In addition, the village passed a second law allowing certain public servants, in addition to police, to issue notices or appearance tickets for violations.

The plan emphasizes economic development in an effort to promote smart growth, prepare the workforce and foster a culture of entrepreneurship. One of the awards includes money to be used by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council to fund a new, fulltime staff position, with CCAC recently announcing that Ardyth Van Scoy will serve as their education coordinator beginning next month. “I am pleased that CCAC has been awarded this grant, which will help support the salary of this full-time position for the next two years,” said Tina Hastings, executive director of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. “The award demonstrates the importance of arts and culture to the economic health of the region.” Van Scoy joined CCAC last year as a part-time AmeriCorps member before eventually taking on the responsibility of managing the Southern Tier Biennial. Her new position will allow her to commit herself full time to CCAC and help focus on the success of their education programs, as well as play a vital role in the management and promotion of their Art on Main consignment store. Van Scoy will continue to manage the Southern Tier Biennial and work closely with Wayne Claypatch, recipient of 2015 Southern Tier Biennial Best of Show honors, for his solo exhibition that he is planning to reveal in 2016. “Many of our programs, including the Community Arts and Pottery Studio, are created to support artists by offering teaching opportunities and sales opportunities through the Art on Main store,” says Hastings. “CCAC will continue to support artists of all genres as we grow. This new position will be integral to our continued success.”
CCAC applied for funding earlier this year through the Consolidated Funding Application as part of the state’s Regional Economic Development Council. Like many other similar organizations from across the state, Hastings and her team at CCAC have been eagerly awaiting the announcement that they had been awarded the funding, which totaled $27,750. Administered through the New York State Council on the Arts, that funding will now allow CCAC to restructure staff positions to maximize resources. As a result, Courtney Mealy, who currently serves as the CCAC’s programs and grants manager, will transition into a new position that will be titled assistant director. “Courtney will pass the responsibility of the Community Arts and Pottery Studio to Ardyth but will continue to administer a very successful NYSCA Decentralization Program for Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties,” explained Hastings. “In addition, her new role will include assisting with organizational development that will help position the organization for the future.” Governor Cuomo launched the Regional Economic Development Councils and the Consolidated Funding Application in 2011 to provide each region with the tools to create and implement their own roadmap for economic prosperity and job creation. The community-based model uses local assets to drive local economic growth and has resulted in unprecedented partnerships and collaboration that are building a reinvigorated economy. In addition to the funding presented to CCAC, other awards include: • $980,000 to Jamestown Community College for the expansion of its Manufacturing
Technology Institute on JCC’s two campuses, including their site in Cattaraugus County. • $160,000 to the City of Olean for what is known as the North 3rd Street Reconstruction Project, which will see the restoration of the 200 block of North 3rd Street that will see the construction of new sidewalks, curbing and trees. • $75,000 to Cattaraugus Community Action for training 45 workers in special populations in culinary arts and $25,000 for training 47 unemployed workers in culinary arts. • $50,000 to the Cattaraugus County Site Redevelopment Assessment to examine the feasibility of developing obsolete manufacturing facilities into space to support advanced manufacturing, private investment, job creation and economic development. • $49,500 to the Cattaraugus County Cultural Plan to hire a consultant to develop a countywide plan that will provide and inventory needs assessment and recommendations to enhance current arts, culture and heritage businesses and programming. On a related note, the Cattaraugus County Arts Council recently learned they are one of 30 organizations that will receive a general operating support grant from the Give for Greatness program and Arts Services Initiative of Western New York. Organizations from throughout Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties each received $1,000. “We are thrilled to be among the wonderful organizations recognized with this grant,” said Hastings. “It is great to have a regional organization like Arts Services Initiative of Western New York, which works very hard to support the arts and culture in the region.”

HoliMont to host this fun, all-day event to raise money for their youth rehabilitation services in Buffalo. While most drug and/or alcohol dependent children across the country are placed in rehabilitation facilities with adults, KED is unique in that it focuses on the rehabilitation of chemically dependent adolescents in Western New York. The KED Renaissance Campus is comprised of three buildings that house more than 60 chemically dependent youths from the ages 12 to 20. Money raised at the SkiScape fundraiser supports the mission of KED, which is “to raise, manage and distribute funds for the development and support of facilities, community education, and advocacy programs for adolescents and their families in Western New York suffering from alcohol and drug dependency/ addiction.” Few fundraising events are more exciting and actionpacked than SkiScape, which has become an annual tradition
for many. Participants must bring a minimum donation of $60, which can be obtained through pledges, and includes an all-day lift ticket, T-shirt, and lunch. Eastern Hills Mall will be awarding gift cards to any participant who raises $100 or more. The day’s events include skiing and snowboarding, individual races and the muchanticipated Annual Firefighter Ski Race. Firefighter organizations from all over the
state compete in the ski race in full firefighter gear for a large trophy and all the glory that accompanies it! Participants can warm up in the main chalet where the silent auction will feature an impressive array of prizes donated by local businesses and organizations.
