The year is winding down, and there’s still plenty of fun to be had in Ellicottville before 2015 arrives! Don’t miss the festively decorated village and all it has to offer this time of year. Grab a bite at one of the restaurants in town or stroll the streets and shop pre- and post-holiday sales for some great deals. Squeeze in some bowling and arcade games, or get in some much-deserved relaxation at a fine spa or the new salt cave spa. Nightlife is sure to impress all week long with a great lineup of live entertainment, including nightly bands featured at The Gin Mill every night Friday, Dec. 26 through Saturday, Jan. 3 (except on New Year’s Day). Winter Blues Weekend Music Lineup celebration weekend of the New Year, Jan. 9-10. Winter Blues weekend transforms Ellicottville’s hot spots into a hub of live music, with a focus on blues with a local flavor. The fun kicks off Friday night with live music at several local establishments. Head to the Gin Mill at 9 p.m. to see Chicagostyle blues by the Easy Street Sliders. Ellicottville’s 2014: A Year of Tremendous Growth By Jann Wiswall

If the U.S. economy is showing signs of recovery, Ellicottville could be proof. For the last several years, and especially in 2014, the town and village has seen growth in new housing developments, existing home sales, new businesses, investments in existing businesses, tax revenues and infrastructure investments. Here are some examples of what’s been happening over the past year.

Ski Area Investments Both Holiday Valley and HoliMont ski resorts spent the off-season on improvements to make your skiing/boarding experiences ever better. Holiday Valley invested $3.4 million on new snowmaking equipment and connecting trails, constructed a stone clock tower and bridge outside the main lodge and more. It also invested heavily in its four-season appeal with additions at See Ellicottville’s 2014 page 10

Learn to Ski/Ride at Holiday Valley or HoliMont

If you’re tired of watching all the fun on the slopes from the deck, make 2015 the year you finally learn to ski or snowboard! January is National Learn a Snowsport Month and there’s no better place to learn that snowsport than on the slopes right here in Ellicottville. At Holiday Valley, take advantage of the resort’s Learn to Ski or Ride Package for $60 all season long. (Or make it a private lesson for $126.) The package includes a one and a halfhour beginner’s lesson, beginner’s area lift ticket and rental equipment. Does nighttime work better for you? Night Learn to Ski/Snowboard packages are available with one-hour lessons at 5:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Register at the Rental Shop for $40. See Snowsport Month page 3

Mansfield Considers Eliminating Town Court By Jann Wiswall

Town of Mansfield Supervisor Bob Keis informed the board at its Dec. 22 meeting that town judge Randy Alexander is resigning effective Dec. 31. For the short term, an interim judge will be appointed by the New York State Courts’ 8th Judicial District. Keis explained that the board has two options for the long term. One is to advertise

the position and appoint a new judge. The other is to “consolidate services” with a surrounding town and eliminate the Mansfield court. From a cost perspective, Keis said that Mansfield spends about $20,000 per year to run its court. This includes salaries for the judge and court clerk, maintenance of required software, and fees to the town prosecutor.

Typically, Keis said, the court hears 3-4 cases per month. Most are traffic infractions, hunting violations, other misdemeanors or arraignments and preliminary hearings for cases that will be moved to county or other courts. Because Mansfield does not have a police department, the court does not hear misdemeanor or criminal cases. On rare occasions, it does hear civil cases. See Mansfield Court page 2

Full disclosure: I hate Christmas more than brussel sprouts, homemade wine and Michael Vick. Shopping like it’s roller derby, needless gift giving, fighting over parking spots— Christmas for me is best described as Black Friday, Black Saturday, Black Sunday, right through to Black Boxing Day. I wouldn’t say the spirit of Christmas has been buried by materialism, but the only clue children today have of when it all began with the birth of Christ in Bethlehem is that the Travelodge hotel chain is offering couples named Mary and Joseph one free night on Dec. 25. I am not making that up. I’m waiting for Joe Camel to offer kids free Three Wise Men action figures with the purchase of every carton of cigarettes. The single thought that gets me through Christmas is that there’s some poor bugger out there that hates the yuletide season more than me. And that has to be Pet Santa down at the mall. Can you imagine that interview at the local temporary employment office? “Sorry Bob, but with no licence, no trade skills and no experience ... oh wait a minute ... the mall needs a Pet Santa at ten bucks an hour.” “What do I hafta do?” “Just sit there in a Santa Claus outfit and have your picture taken with pets!” “Well, I do like dogs. I am overweight. Red is my favourite colour. What could possibly go wrong?” Answer: everything from frightened dogs to grumpy cats, rabbits bearing raisins and ferrets which tend to burrow down into areas that are dark and warm. If you’re ever at the mall when Santa is screaming like he just sat on a Cactus Chia

Pet, chances are the ferret’s gone missing again. Calmness at the mall is paramount, so Pet Santas let the dogs walk around and get comfortable before they haul them up onto their laps for the photos. And we all know how dogs get to know you. Yeah, half way through his shift, Pet Santa is on his way into Guinness Book of Records in the category of Crotch Sniffing. And now that everybody has a cell phone, people are no longer satisfied with just colour photos of Buster and Calico Sal. With iPhones containing scads of gigabytes, many people are taking videos of the event and acting like Hollywood directors. “Lights! Camera! Action! Oops! Poop! Cut! Clean up at the North Pole.” Pet Santas use a set of props including high-pitched whistles and squeaky toys to get the animals’ attention for the camera. You have to hope one of these videos doesn’t surface at Pet Santa’s next high school reunion. “So Bob, I see you carved out quite the career of a man who gets paid to be peed on. When you retire, do you get a gold watch or a choke collar?” And cats being dragged to the mall for a photo shoot?!? A cat napping on his back in the window still gets cranky when a cloud gets between him and the sun. Imagine how happy Big Ears Curtis is going to be after being crated, uncrated and then held against his will by a fat stranger whose clothes are covered in dog hair!?! Which is why you’ll often hear Pet Santa say: “ I really ho, ho, hope this little fella is declawed.” If not, Santa and Mrs. Claus can pretty much forget about adding to their elf collection. Yes, nothing says Christmas better than a

cat with a grudge kneading your lap followed closely by an overweight Rottweiler with gas. Let’s be honest, Pet Santa photos are not for the pets. Generally speaking, they hate the whole experience. Pet Santa photos are vanity ventures by the owners of the pets that end up as family gifts, framed mementos, Christmas card pictures and t-shirt highlights. So in order to even things out, if every pet had his way, after he spent ten embarrassing minutes posing with Santa, the owner would have to head over to the south side of the North Pole display and spend a half hour strapped to Santa’s Mechanical Reindeer. Do not eat before mounting. I actually have a photograph of my late dog, Jake, with Santa at the local mall which I did not authorize or approve. It was a gift. But to be perfectly honest, it’s a great photo with both my exceedingly handsome dog and jolly Old Saint Nick appearing as happy as two kids at camp. I know why Jake is smiling. If you told that dog there was a treat involved he’d have volunteered to go down into the mines of Sudbury to work as a “gas sniffer.” But Santa, with a great big grin on his face and a big slobbering dog on his lap?!? If your parents have an iPhone, Windows phone or Android phone, you can get an inside look at Santa’s travels on Christmas Eve this year. All they have to do is download the free NORAD Tracks Santa app. By the way, it works on iPads and iTouch as well. The NORAD Tracks Santa app is the official mobile app of the NORAD Tracks Santa program. Watch Santa fly around the world on Dec. 24 and count down to when the app begins tracking Santa’s flight. You can even play “Thin Ice” to help Santa’s elves deliver presents, and learn about NORAD and its mission. For more than 50 years, NORAD and its predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) have tracked Santa’s flight using radar, satellites, SantaCams and fighter jets. NORAD uses its powerful North Warning System radar that has 47 locations across North Canada and Alaska. NORAD watches closely for Santa Claus’ departure from the North Pole every holiday season, and the moment radar says he has lifted off, they start using their special satellites equipped with infrared sensors that can detect the heat coming off Rudolph’s nose! According to the NORAD website, they turn their highspeed SantaCams once a year, on Dec. 24, “about one hour before Santa enters a country, then switch them off after we capture images of him and the reindeer.” Lastly, NORAD uses Canadian NORAD fighter pilots to track Santa and welcome him to North

Ellicottville Window Decoration Winners Announced Judges have strolled through the village and visitors have made their voices heard. All of the votes have been tallied and the winners of the 2014 Ellicottville Window Decoration Contest have been chosen! This year’s winners are: Judged: Kazoo II (Elf) Guest-Judged: Katy’s (Santa’s Workshop) Guest voter: Amber Graham “We have had great participation from not only the merchants in the village, but our great guests and shoppers, as well,” Jessica Maynard, partner at Nouriche, said. “We have had the windows decorated in years past, but to actually assemble the decorating into something to draw people to our historic downtown is something that has not been done in a while. I know the shops appreciate people coming to town and having a bit of Christmas fun with us.”

A total of nine village merchants participated in the decoration contest this year, dressing up their windows in the theme of a favorite Christmas movie. Some windows had moving displays, and others were more traditional in their approach. All were judged by a team of five judges and those who visited the Chamber website. In total, of all the pictures posted of windows in

Ellicottville, over 500 votes were cast by guests. The business owners will receive a VIP four pack of tickets to the 2015 Summer Music Festival performance of their choice, in July, and Graham will receive a family four pack of tickets to the performance of her choice. Sky High Adventure Park, decking around the pools, golf course enhancements and renovations at the Inn at Holiday Valley. HoliMont spent some $650,000 on improvements, including $250,000 in snowmaking equipment and $100,000 to install catalytic converters to reduce harmful emissions at the power plant per new EPA requirements. It also made chalet improvements and purchased new generators, snowmobiles for staff and machinery upgrades. Festivals and Events Ellicottville’s many festivals and events continue to draw ever bigger crowds into the area all year long, and 2014 was no exception. Signature spring, summer and fall events such as the Summer Music Festival, Americana Folk Art and Music Fair, Jazz and Blues Weekend, the Taste of Ellicottville, Rock N’ Roll Weekend and Fall Festival continue to grow, filling hotel rooms well in advance. And Holiday Valley and HoliMont both bring in even more visitors every winter for their many events that benefit dozens of non-profit organizations and great causes. New & Improved Dining Options It’s been a major year of growth and change for Ellicottville’s expanding restaurant community. Cadillac Jack’s closed its former seasonal location and moved to a new location on Monroe where it will be open year round beginning in January. The new Slopeside Bar & BBQ restaurant opened in December at Cadillac Jack’s former site at Route 219 and Holiday Valley Road. Dina’s restaurant underwent a major expansion into the vacated space next door, allowing it to expand dining and bar seating as well as private dining space for larger parties. Hamburg, N.Y.’s famous Armor Inn just opened its second BBQ restaurant on Mill Street in the Village Centre to great reviews. The cozy Katy’s Café, which is a popular meeting spot for yummy breakfast and lunch, is opening another location in Great Valley which will be open for dinner as well. The expansion also makes it possible for owner/chef Katy Arena expand her cake design and catering business. Over the summer, Madigan’s and Balloons each constructed additions at their locations. And, plans are underway for a new French bistro in the Ellicottville Inn Condominium building, with an eagerly anticipated opening next spring or summer. New Residential/Vacation Communities Several new residential communities in Ellicottville are in various stages of planning and development.

At 16 Martha St., developers are renovating the former American Locker business’s vacant buildings to create an 18-unit rental apartment complex called EVLofts. 42 Degrees North, a luxury, single-family-home vacation community off Poverty Hill Road, is being built by Canadian developers who expect to break ground on roads next spring. One of Ellicottville’s most historic buildings — the 1887 Schoolhouse building at the corner of Jefferson and Washington streets — has been purchased by developers who are restoring the exterior of the building to its finest. They expect to turn the property into a 7-10 unit condominium with underground parking. Two new housing developments are being planned on Fillmore Street: the Glendale project, a proposed townhouse community with nine homes (18 units) on the east side; and the Sprague project, a proposed 19-lot, single-family home subdivision, on the west side. The Glen Burn Trail townhome development at 6422 E. Washington St. is moving along with construction of what will eventually include 38 units. Several have been sold and are already occupied. EllicottVillas, at 6394 East Washington St., offers luxurious, 3,000-plus square-foot townhomes with heated garages for sale as vacation or year-round residential properties. And, closings on 21 of the 31 available lots for singlefamily homes at HoliMont’s WestMont Ridge are under way as homeowners begin work on their architectural plans. In addition, 18 new condominium buildings with four units each (72 total) that will be located at the base of the Sunset area are in the design stages. HoliMont expects to begin pre-construction sales of the condos this winter. New Retail/Services Ellicottville’s newest spa opened to great reviews at the intersection of W. Washington St. and Route 242 (next to Betsy’s Consignments). The Ellicottville Salt Cave offers exfoliation treatments, salt massage and halotherapy, or salt therapy, which has been popular in Europe for many years. At 34 E. Washington, the do-op Gear Shop opened to give Ellicottville sports enthusiasts access to high-end, specialized sunglasses, helmets, hats, clothing and other sports accessories. In addition, there are plans in the works for a new fitness center, a new dog grooming business and a distillery with tasting room, all with target opening dates in 2015. Local Government Projects The town of Ellicottville has functionally completed a large

and important water project that will alleviate water pressure problems throughout the area, improve fire hydrant performance and allow expansion efforts for public safety and development. The project required installing a new water tank on the east side of Ellicottville and connecting water lines throughout the town, village, WestMont Ridge in Mansfield and Snow Pine in Great Valley. The water project completion means that the village can get started on a $4.9 million wastewater treatment plant in 2015. The new plant is part of a consent order placed on the village by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and involves extensive electrical upgrades, new equipment and new systems. Ultimately, the new plant will upgrade the aging system the area currently relies on and will provide for future development. At the Ellicottville Central School, you can now see construction progress on the $9.8 million renovation project that includes a new multi-purpose gymnasium, renovation of 10 high school classrooms, repair of the elementary school’s ventilation systems and more. In January, the school board will be asking district voters to decide whether or not to earmark an additional $925,000 for a smaller capital project that involves replacing two major roof areas and completing several projects that were cut from the original renovation project due to cost. The New York State Department of Transportation began work on a multi-faceted road and sidewalk project in 2014 that includes improving drainage and constructing a new sidewalk along Route 242 S from HoliMont to the village. To date, most of the drainage and curb work has been completed. The DOT also plans to improve handicapped ramps at several village intersections and to reconfigure the difficult intersections at Route 219/Elizabeth Street/Fillmore Drive. Originally, the entire project was scheduled for fall 2014 completion, but due to a number of factors, it is now scheduled to be completed sometime next year. Recreational Trail Support Grows Broad community support continues to build for the proposed Ellicottville-Great Valley Recreational Trail — a traffic-free route ultimately running from the intersection of Routes 219 and 242, past the Nannen Arboretum, through the village, HoliMont and Holiday Valley, and into the Town of Great Valley. Fundraising and grant writing continues. All signs are pointing to a great 2015 for Ellicottville, too, as whispers of additional growth and more new businesses abound! Olean Outdoor and Rec Sports Show Jan. 17-18 There are less than four weeks until the opening of the 2015 Outdoor and Rec Sports Show! The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce (GOACC) is hosting the show at the Good Times of Olean Events Center, on Saturday, Jan. 17, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As more individuals and families travel shorter distances from home and take shorter vacations or mini-vacations, the Outdoor and Rec Sports Show will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities close to home. Exhibits will include camping, paddle sports, hiking, cycling, all-terrain vehicles, hunting, snow and water-skiing, snowmobiling, bird watching, fishing, and more.

Thirty-six vendors have signed up to date, including entertainment by The Call Outdoors, who will include many tips, from scouting to harvesting, Country Squirrel Outfitters, who will bring kayaks, bicycles, hiking supplies, snowshoes and cross country skis, as well as hunting accessories, and Leisure Time Powersports, the show’s official snowmobile vendor. Colonial Media & Entertainment will be on hand, featuring their air personalities as announcers for the seminars and demos scheduled throughout both days. The GOACC is also hosting a raffle during the show, with a chance to win a variety of items supplied by Ron’s Gun Shop, CUTCO Cutlery Corp., Ka-Bar Knives and Country Squirrel Outfitters.

Tickets are $5 each or five for $20 with a limit of 500 tickets. The drawing will be held on Jan. 18. Admission to the show is $3 for adults and $2 for students and seniors. Children 12 and under are free with an adult. Javelin Exercise for Better Short Turns By Ron Kubicki, Director of Holiday Valley Snowsports School

How often have you ridden up the Cindy’s lift and watched a skier make precise, short turns down the headwall? Everything seems to be in balance and timed perfectly. The turns are crisp and dynamic. Their upper body is directed downhill with very little movement and the skis are cutting rhythmic arcs in the snow. The secret to mastering these short turns is to learn to turn your lower body under a stable and quiet upper body. To do this, you need to turn your legs in the hip socket. Think about it — how do your legs turn? Stand on the flat with your arms extended with your poles planted for balance. Now swing one leg away from your body while keeping your ski tips together. What socket is allowing this movement? Your hip socket. You are not turning your whole body — you are simply turning your legs. This is the how you can make such quick and tightly spaced turns. A good drill to get the feeling of turning in the hip is to find a nice moderate slope

and do some javelin turns. A good spot would be between the NASTAR race shacks on Cindy’s. At a moderate speed, make a medium-sized turn and pick up the inside ski, complete that turn by stepping on the outside ski and then begin the next turn. As you do these, notice how your outside/ downhill ski is turning under your raised ski. You should notice the tip of your raised ski is actually over the tip of the turning ski, yet your shoulders and head are facing downhill. This is upper and lower body separation, and this is the key element to developing a precise and sequential short turn. As you are doing this, develop a counting rhythm in your head 1-2-3 turn, 1-2-3

turn, 1-2-3 turn, etc. Now, put both skis on the snow and keep the same rhythm and sense of turning your legs under a stable and quiet upper body. Do four turns picking up your inside ski, then four with both skis on the snow. Alternate like this until you are feeling the same turning of the legs, whether one or both skis are on the snow. Then, pick up your rhythm to 1-2 turn, 1-2 turn and so on and then 1 turn, 1 turn. You should have the same sense of turning your legs and guiding your skis, no matter the tempo. Skiing is enhanced by being in balance from an upright athletic stance with upper/ lower body separation. Practice this drill and you will soon be skiing the headwalls with precision and skill, and being the one admired by others on the chairlift! Health & Fitness: Using Exercise to Relieve Holiday Stress â€“ Part 1

With the holidays approaching fiercely and fast, exercise is literally the last thing most of us are thinking about, let alone making extra time for it. So, instead of focusing on one strength training exercise, Iâ€™m going to show you how exercise in almost any form can act as a stress reliever. Being active can boost your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries. Virtually any form of exercise, from aerobics to yoga, can act as a stress reliever. If youâ€™re not an athlete or even if youâ€™re downright out of shape, you can still make a little exercise go a long way toward stress management. Discover the connection between exercise and stress relief â€” and why exercise should be part of your stress management plan.

Exercise and Stress Relief Exercise increases your overall health and your sense of well-being, which puts more pep in your step every day. But exercise also has some direct stress-busting benefits. â€˘ It pumps up your endorphins. Physical activity helps to bump up the production of your brainâ€™s feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins. Although this function is often referred to as a runnerâ€™s high, a rousing game of tennis or a nature hike also can contribute to this same feeling. â€˘ Itâ€™s meditation in motion. After a brisk walk or a vigorous hour of skiing, youâ€™ll often find that youâ€™ve forgotten the dayâ€™s irritations and concentrated only on your bodyâ€™s movements. As you begin to regularly shed your daily tensions through movement and physical activity, you may find that this focus on a single task, and the resulting energy and optimism, can help you remain calm and clear in everything that you do. â€˘ It improves your mood. Regular exercise can increase self-confidence and lower the symptoms associated with mild depression and anxiety. Exercise also can improve your sleep, which is often

disrupted by stress, depression and anxiety. All this can ease your stress levels and give you a sense of command over your body and your life. A successful exercise program begins with a few simple steps: â€˘ Consult with your doctor. If you havenâ€™t exercised for some time and you have health concerns, you may want to talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise routine. â€˘ Walk before you run. Build up your fitness level gradually. Excitement about a new program can lead to overdoing it and possibly even injury. â€˘ Do what you love. Virtually any form of exercise or movement can increase your fitness level while decreasing your stress. The most important thing is to pick an activity that you enjoy. Examples include walking, dancing, jogging, bicycling, yoga, tai chi, skating, weightlifting, gardening and swimming. â€˘ Pencil it in. Although your schedule may necessitate a morning workout one day and an evening activity the next, carving out some time to move every day helps you make your exercise program an ongoing priority.

Mavis Meyer, 87 Mavis M. Meyer, 87, of Route 242 passed away Dec. 20at Olean General Hospital. She was born Sept. 8, 1927, in Ellicottville, the daughter of the late Raymond S. and Leanna (Wineford) Frank. On Oct. 4, 1947, she married Paul W. Meyer who predeceased her on Oct. 6, 1998. She had worked at Burrell Cutlery in Ellicottville and Brooks Market. She also worked at Holiday Valley Daycare for 17 years and she was a cook at the Cattaraugus County Jail for years. Mrs. Meyer was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Ellicottville Historical Society, Ellicottville Alumni Association, Cattaraugus County Deputy Sheriffâ€™s

Wives Association and she worked with handicapped kids in the Olean area. She is survived by two sons Doug (Linda) Meyer of Concord, N.C., and William (Leza Franze) Meyer of Ellicottville; a daughter Donna Lee (David Hall)

Meyer of West Valley, N.Y.; a granddaughter Caylin (John Moss) Meyer of Ellicottville; and two great grandchildren, Rae Ann Meyer and Jase Moss. Also surviving is a sister Donna (Jim) Meyer of Cary, N.C., and a nephew, Peter Meyer of New York City. Besides her husband, she is predeceased by a brother, Norman Frank; a grandson, John Hasper; and a nephew, Brent Meyer. Funeral services were held on Dec. 23 Mentley Funeral Home, Little Valley. Burial was in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Ellicottville. Memorials may be made to the Ellicottville Historical Society.

With colder weather on its way you may be wondering how our wintering birds fight off the frigid air. Birds must keep their body temperature high and stable in order to survive. Our body temperature is 98.7Â°F. Most birds keep their body temperature at closer to 104Â°F, a little warmer than we do. Also, like us, birds are able to stay this warm by burning the calories contained in their food, seeds, fruit and insects. But unlike us, they are so small they lose their heat quickly. Birds have a number of ways to generate more heat, such as shivering their flight muscles. And of course, bird body feathers are like little down jackets that hold the heat of the body in. But those tiny, thin legs are completely exposed! To deal with this birds can stand on one leg and pull the other up under their feathers when one leg starts getting too cold. And if it gets really cold, they can squat on their perches

But unlike most other animals some birds do this in a special way; the blood vessels going into the legs lie right next to the blood vessels leaving the legs. speculation that the scales on the feet of the bird are less likely to frostbite than skin is. For instance, we cannot get frostbite on our hair, because our hair is not actually living, much like the scales that cover birds feet. Sometimes, however, birds toes do get frostbit. Mourning Doves in particular have a hard time dealing with our cold winters. Mourning Doves have not lived in our cold climate as long as birds like chickadees, and sometimes they will lose a toe or two to frostbite! The Art Roscoe Ski Trails officially opened on Dec. 17. The upper trails have 3â€“6 inches of wet snow that has accumulated over the last several days. The lower trails have little to no coverage. The ground has not had an opportunity to freeze and the

wet snow is insulating the warm ground. Park staff is on the upper trails now, Sweet Water (seems to have the most snow), Christian (shallow tracks, wet spots and open spots), Leonardâ€™s Run (shallow snow and a lot of bare spots). Lower trails are almost bare.

Shopping in Ellicottville is an exciting adventure for visitors and residents alike. You can spend days shopping ski shops, boutiques, gift shops and more all within a compact area, including many excellent restaurants for that essential coffee or lunch break. Shopping in Ellicottville is worth a trip, and it’s not only the goods available, it’s the friendly, courteous salespeople and others you meet on the street. Shop owners here have worked hard to keep the spirit of this historic town alive in buildings that hold secrets of the past and reach out to us from every direction. When Ellicottville was being settled, shopping for bare essentials was done at trading posts. The first trading post in Ellicottville was the Ellis House on the southwest side of Washington Street next to the Episcopal Church. As soon as settlers came, there was a need for merchants and tradesmen to set up businesses providing basic goods and services for the settlers’ needs. Businesses in these early days (1820s –1830s) mainly catered to essentials such as salt, sugar, spices and material for making clothing. Hand tools necessary for farming were made by the blacksmith, leather for shoes came from the tannery and gristmills ground the wheat into flour. By 1876, readymade clothing stores, fabric and dressmaking stores, two tailors, seamstresses and hat makers were all found here. At that time, there were also seven blacksmiths, three

shoemakers, 10 grocery stores, four dry goods/grocery stores, a meat market and a bakery, two drug stores, a hardware store, a feed store, a harness shop, a shoe store, a printing office, a foundry, a carriage shop, a sign and carriage painter, a watch repair shop and a millinery shop. In addition, you could buy good like tobacco, furniture, upholstery, toys, clothing, fancy goods, musical instruments, hair oil, perfume and ready-made coffins. Ellicottville was a farming and industrial town through most of its history, providing for the needs of farmers around the county. In the 1920s, Ellicottville businesses met residents’ needs and it was seldom necessary to take the train to Salamanca or Buffalo to find goods that were unavailable here. Skiing did not influence commerce until the early 1960s, when slow and steady growth brought Ellicottville to where it is today, no longer an isolated little country town but a vibrant resort town that’s now “on the map” not only for skiing but for great shopping. In the last few years, Ellicottville has boomed with new business openings and expansions. Until “the age of the supermarket” in the ‘60s, stores were smaller and the number of people in the town and surrounding area was much greater. In addition to a supermarket, we now have a meat market, a cheese store, a chocolate store, a natural foods store, two liquor and wine stores, a winery and

a brewery to take care of our culinary needs, as well as more than a dozen restaurants and bars in the village. Today’s unique businesses include a quilt shop, a consignment store, an art gallery, bicycle shop, many gift and clothing stores, and even a sock store. A trip back in time reveals interesting past tenants in buildings housing very different businesses today. The Red Door Ski Shop was Edwin Northrup’s Dry Goods Store and later the Style Shop, which was founded in 1880 operated in the same spot for 93 years. Dina’s restaurant was Lon Dreier’s Meat market and later Zeke Slating’s Red and White grocery store. Kazoo II was Walter Lawler’s food, rugs and carpeting store. He delivered groceries from house to house and would accept produce from farmers as pay for their purchase. Tips Up was A.K. Strenbo’s Plumbing and Heating shop, and Madigan’s was the Litchfield Hardware Store. Balloons was a poolroom on one side with the Ellicottville Post newspaper on the other. Today, shops and restaurants with high ceilings and exposed brick walls invite you in to imagine what shopping was like here over the past 200 years. Experience the past echoing around you, and smell the long ago that still lingers in the air. Hear the ladies sharing gossip while inspecting cloth for a new dress. Feel the past by touching the walls that hold the secrets of hundreds and thousands of shoppers who came before you.

Armor Inn Ellicottville Location Now Open On Friday, Dec. 19, the Armor Inn Tap Room opened its doors in Ellicottville. This will be the second location (the first is in Hamburg) opening for the Armor Inn Tap Room, which is located right in the heart of the village, across the street from the Wingate by Wyndham Hotel. The Armor Inn Tap Room offers family-friendly, casual dining, specializing in mouthwatering barbecue. They will be open seven days a week, starting at 7 a.m., for breakfast, lunch, dinner and at 10 p.m., a late night menu will be available. Menu favorites include signature smoked wings and barbecue nachos. They have also added new items, including the entire breakfast menu, homemade pizza logs and barbecue tacos. Basketball Teams Displaced by Construction, Baseball/Softball Signups in January By Todd Palmatier

The girls’ varsity basketball team got back to work and finished the week 1-2, with a win over Cuba-Rushford Rebels in the Franklinville Holiday tournament to take home third place, and suffered losses to Salamanca and Holland, respectively. The team was led by sophomore Marissa Hamilton in the scoring department during the three games, earning her a spot on the All-Tourney team on the Franklinville team. Evie Cortez, Cheyenne Maybee and Courtney Charlesworth also contributed significant points during the three-game stretch. The Lady Eagles next play in the JCC Holiday Tournament on Jan. 2–3. The boys’ varsity team also played in the Franklinville Holiday Tourney and did not fare as well, with a fourth place finish, with losses to

Franklinville and Pioneer. The team was led by the freshman combo of Austin Grinols (8 points), Elliott Bowen (16 points) and Griffin Chudy (7 points). Senior Phalla Musall had 10 points in the loss versus Franklinville. The Eagles lost the consolation game against Pioneer, with points led by seniors Musall with 12 points and Kevin Bower with 6 points. The basketball programs at ECS are dealing with not having a home for the 201415 season. However, they are adjusting well with a large fan base traveling to games to support the team, which is displaced due to the capital construction project. The teams will play all games away from ECS and will call West Valley and Franklinville schools home for their home games. They are also pressed into practicing in different schools, as well, and are alternating

weeks in Limestone and Little Valley. They must travel by bus to each practice site, but the ride gives the teams some time with each other to build a “team first” attitude. To also build on the teams, both the girls’ program and boys’ programs have and will attend St. Bonaventure basketball games to camaraderie among teammates. Little Leage Baseball and Softball Signups ECLV Little League baseball and softball signups will begin in January 2015. The league is looking for volunteer coaches, umpires and officials. Also, the league is looking for corporate sponsors for the 2015 season. The cost to sponsor a team is $250, and this puts your company logo on uniform and helps buy uniforms for more than 350 area kids.
