Cheers to Beer & Wine Fest Weekend Wine! Beer! Food! Friends! Music! It’s all here at the annual Beer & Wine Festival Weekend at Holiday Valley, where adult beverages find their match and grapes and hops make way for two fun-filled events. On Friday, Nov. 6, the 10th annual Brewmasters Dinner takes place at the Main Lodge. This event is designed around beer and food pairings, with a backdrop of the Golden Age of Hollywood theme. Tickets for this event sold out quickly, so plan early for 2016 so you’re sure to get in on the fun! On Saturday, Nov. 7, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., Holiday Valley Resort, the Ellicottville Brewing Company and Southern Tier Brewery will host the 12th Annual Beer and Wine Festival at the Holiday Valley Lodge. Guests will be able to sample over 100 handcrafted beers from more than 30 of the best New York State and American craft breweries, as well as wines from New York, Southern Ontario and Ellicottville vintners. The new festival Wine Cellar on the lodge’s ground floor will be the site of several New York wineries, including Merritt, Black Willow, Winery of Ellicottville, Savage, Victorianbourg, Busted Grapes, Chateau Buffalo Ciderhouse and Winery, Noble Winery, Main Street Winery, Long Neck Wines and more. In addition to samples galore, the Beer & Wine Festival will feature live music that can’t be beat. Christmas event is moving the increasingly popular event to a larger space in the village. Ellicottville Brewing Company (EBC) will host this year’s fundraiser, which
is a merry evening of music, food, drink, camaraderie and, of course, the infamous pie auction. The change in venue has caused a bit of a stir this year, but there are good reasons for the move. “Over the years, it’s become an iconic event and we just ran out of highway – we ran out of room. I got a lot of static about that — I’m breaking a tradition —but if we have more people who can’t get in than can get in, then I really need a different location. Observed annually on Nov. 11, Veterans Day is the single day of remembrance that recognizes the signing of the armistice, which ended World War I. Military veterans are honored and publicly thanked for their service to their country on Veterans Day in a wide variety of ways, including parades, church services and other community-wide recognition ceremonies. Though World War I ended in 1918, Congress officially recognized the end of the battle in 1926 by declaring that the anniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. Nov. 11 was approved as a legal holiday in 1938 and was originally known as Armistice Day to honor all World War I veterans. Following the mobilization of service members to fight in World War II, it was decided in 1954 to officially change the name of the holiday to Veterans Day. See Veterans Day page 2

County Clerk, EVL Supervisor Races Too Close To Call By Jann Wiswall
Election Day in Cattaraugus County was busy at polling sites all around the region despite the fact that it was an off-year election. While many races were not competitive (e.g. lone candidates for the post or two candidates running for two
seats), some were competitive indeed. The race for county clerk is too close to call, according to the Republican Commissioner of Elections Sue Fries. Incumbent Democratic Clerk Alan Bernstein received 47.01 percent of the vote while Republican challenger Michael
M. Brisky had 46.03 percent. Working Families/Women’s Equality candidate Brittany N. Melfi had 6.92 percent. Fries reported that, as of Nov. 4, the Board of Elections has more than 700 absentee ballots to count before it can certify the election for County Clerk. See Election Results page 8

In addition to local VFW posts and American Legion halls recognizing our veterans next week, a local non-forproďŹ t organization that assists veterans from across Western New York is planning a special tribute next weekend. Focusing their mission of improving the lives of those who proudly served their nation, WNY Heroes is making a difference in the lives of local military veterans, including service members from throughout Cattaraugus County. The organization’s dedicated volunteers will host the sixth annual Red, White & Blue Gala on Friday, Nov. 13 at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens in Depew. The annual fundraiser recognizes veterans who have served and the families of those left behind. Founded in 2007, WNY Heroes provides veterans and the widows and children of deceased veterans with access to everyday essential living needs, ďŹ nancial assistance and other resources to help support them and maintain their dignity. The organization is overseen by an advisory board that includes business leaders, community stakeholders and representatives of various philanthropic and civic foundations. Excitement is building for next week’s recognition dinner, which will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. inside the grand ballroom of Salvatore’s. This year’s event will include a presentation by SSG Timothy Payne, a combat veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan who now works as a motivational speaker and

MS/HS Fall Concert with Special BPO Performance Nov. 12 Ellicottville Central School will kick-off its 2015-16 concerts with a Middle School/ High School performance on Thursday, November 12 in the new multi-purpose gymnasium. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. The school is also excited to announce that immediately following the student concert, the Buffalo Philharmonic String Quartet, headed by Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) violinist Diana Sachs, also will be performing for all to enjoy.
The Quartet is an outgrowth of the BPO’s Teaching Artists Program. Both concerts are open and free to the public. The Quartet’s program will be based on Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. It outlines a few highlights in the book which are musically illustrated by many short pieces that they play in a “back and forth telling of the story.” This concert in made possible in part through funds from the Tony Cassetta
Program, which supports the introduction of fine arts to students at Ellicottville Central School. MS/HS Principal Bob Miller notes that “we are very excited about the opportunities our new multi-purpose facilities provide, not just for students, but for the entire community as well. OBITUARY Kirk Rowland, Jr. 1989-2015
HUMPHREY - Mr. Kirk Rowland Jr. died Saturday (Oct. 31, 2015) at Bradford (Pa.) Regional Medical Center following a long illness.
Born on July 29, 1989, in Olean, he was a son of Kirk Rowland Sr. of Humphrey and Kimberly Mitchell Rowland of Ellicottville, who survive. He was a graduate of the Ellicottville High School Class of 2007. He was also a graduate of Ohio Technical College in Cleveland, where he received an associate degree in diesel mechanics. Kirk had been employed at Portville Truck and Auto in Portville. Previously, he had been employed at Day’s Auto in Great Valley. He played semi-pro football for the Southern Tier Diesel football team. He loved his three dogs, Cutter, Caligo and Apollo.
Surviving besides his parents are his fiancee, Katie Caldwell, of Bradford, Pa.; two brothers, Joshua Rowland and Jacob Rowland, both of Humphrey; his maternal grandfather, Randal Loar of LaPlata, NM; his maternal grandmother, Sandra Mitchell of Humphrey; and his paternal grandparents, Donald and Norma Hutchison Rowland of Humphrey. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 5, 2015) in the pavilion at Memorial Park, Ellicottville. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Salamanca.

Being part of a large family and living on a farm with a menagerie of animals, Ploetz developed a good sense for work, play, and a vivid imagination. Couple all of this with a strong faith and you have the essence of Nina. Writing has always been a quiet passion of Nina’s. She’s written many poems and stories for family and friends; occasionally sharing her words and whit at family gatherings and functions. It is just more recently she has ventured out into a more public sharing of her thoughts, poems and stories. I Am, I Can I Will! A Jungle Dream is Nina Pauline Ploetz’s first major publishing. As a matter of fact, Shawna just received a clean bill of health with no limitations from Roswell Cancer Institute last Tuesday, Oct. 27. When asked about her cancer scare and subsequent battle against this disease, Gursky is very open and forthright. She will tell you how she discovered a lump with a self-breast exam and how she then had to convince the doctors and radiologists to keep looking when they told her there was nothing in her mammogram that showed cancer. She will tell you how her persistence led to a biopsy that ultimately led to the diagnosis she dreaded. That was July 26, 2013.
Since that diagnosis, Gursky had a double mastectomy and endured eight rounds of chemotherapy. She lost her hair, but never her faith. Today, she is healthy and ready to get back into the fitness industry. Starting Nov. 10, Gursky will be teaching pilates every Tuesday and Thursday f r o m 6-6:45p.m. For those of you unfamiliar with pilates, here is a brief description according to Wikipedia: “Pilates, developed by Joseph Pilates, is the art of controlled movements. Its emphasis is on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance. OBITUARY Maj. William F. Brown 1942-2015 ELLICOTTVILLE - Maj. William F. Brown, retired, 73, of Horn Hill Road, died Thursday (Oct. 29, 2015) following a sudden illness. Born Feb. 7, 1942, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of the late Lawrence Brown and Betty Dengg. He was married in 1997 in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands, to the former Leslie Cannon, who predeceased him in June 2015. Maj. Brown enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961, later serving tours in Vietnam and on Okinawa, and was stationed in southern California and Hawaii. He retired with distinguished honors in 1980. In 1972, he earned the first-ever perfect score in the USMC’s Air Defense School, a record that stands today.
After serving in the military, and then as an executive with Sierra Research in Cheektowaga, he owned and operated The Ilex Inn in Ellicottville from 1991 to 2001. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling, especially his ever-frequent trips to Paris with his late wife, Leslie. He was a member of the Rotary Club. Surviving are two sons, Derek W. (Jeanette) Brown of Philadelphia and Gavin E. (Cheryl) Brown of Colorado Springs, CO; three grandchildren, Faith Brown of Philadelphia, and Corbin and Emily Brown, both of San Diego; two brothers, Thomas Brown of Jacksonville, FL, and Michael “Mickey” Brown of Detroit; two sisters, Heidi
Stein and Hallie Youssef, both of Miami; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Mary Brown. Memorial visitation will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Ellicottville, from 11 a.m. to noon, followed immediately by a memorial service with the Rev. Dan Buringrud officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking memorial donations be directed to the Marine Corps Veterans Association Veterans Funeral Honors Assistance Program. At the intersection of 7th and Court streets in Little Valley sits a brick building with a cornerstone that reads 1911. It was dedicated in 1914 to 200 local veterans who had returned from the Civil War. James Whipple, a Salamanca lawyer and politician at the time, pointed out that the building was not to the scale of other monuments in the country, but it meant something to those in Cattaraugus County. “It will contain the battle flags which our boys carried and defended, and the relief and mementoes gathered by many hands from hundreds of places, especially those things telling us of the habits, the lives, the implements, the customs of early settlers in this county and Western New York,” Whipple said in his dedication. “To us in Cattaraugus County it tells of the early days, of our soldiers living and dead, and represents the thought, the patient work of those who conceived and built it. It will become the shrine of soldiers and sailors living, and the registry of those who have died,” Whipple exclaimed. Known as the Cattaraugus County Memorial and Historical Building, the site has been home to a library, the Cattaraugus County Museum and the board of elections building over the years. It has sat vacant for roughly 10 years, though, and in 2013 the county legislature appropriated funds and voted unanimously to demolish the building. Cue the “Citizens Advocating Memorial Preservation.” Known as CAMP, Citizens Advocating Memorial
Preservation is a group of 80 members who have thrown their support behind preserving the Cattaraugus County Memorial and Historical Building. Led by Thomas Stetz, members of CAMP have spoken to county legislators and preservation leagues to help them save the building. “A lot of our [supporters] are descendants of the people it was dedicated to. They’re all over the country – so this effort goes beyond Cattaraugus County.” The Landmark Society of Western New York, one of America’s oldest and most active preservation organizations, has recently taken an interest in the building, according to Stetz, and has added it to their “Five 2 Revive” list. Five 2 Revive is an annual list that calls attention to five buildings in the WNY area that the Landmark Society deems are worthy of being preserved. Being on the list means that staff from the Landmark Society will be dedicated to helping the preservation efforts. To date, the Landmark Society toured the building and dubbed it in “relatively good condition.” And, a grant from the Landmark Foundation was used for a feasibility study on the building, done by Clinton Brown Company Architecture. The study was presented to the county legislature’s Public Works Committee. “That’s pretty significant,” Stetz said. “This highly regarded [organization] in New York State saw this was a project worth their time. That’s something.”
In addition to the Landmark Society, the Civil War Trust has put its support behind CAMP’s efforts. In April, Gary Adelman, the director of history and education for the Trust, wrote a letter of support for preservation of the building. “To have support from a national group, for them to feel it was worthy … that really helps,” Stetz said. CAMP has also gained support from the Cattaraugus County American Legion, which presented its resolution of support to the county legislature. “CAMP members look at it not as a building but as a memorial to those soldiers,” Stetz said. “It’s a memorial that needs to be preserved … just like the Washington Monument or the Vietnam wall.” While there haven’t been any formal statements yet, Stetz said there has been talk from county legislators who have agreed to “back off.” Although it’s not official, Stetz said CAMP is considering this a victory. As for the future of the Cattaraugus County Memorial and Historical Building, there are no plans for what it will become, if it is saved. “The first thing is to make sure it doesn’t come down,” he said. “The Landmark Society has offered to market the building. The toy drive begins early Friday morning when McCarthy parks a Christmas tree decorated wagon outside EBC on Monroe Street. Then come back to EBC to enjoy the free event with live Irish music from 6–10 p.m., with a brief interruption at 7 p.m. for the infamous pie auction, featuring 10 delicious home-baked pies, donated annually by generous citizens of Ellicottville. Each year, the 10 pies are accompanied by a wooden piece hand made by McCarthy. Last year, each pie came with a pie box. This year, McCarthy is building Irish chests, measuring approximately 26” long by 12–14” wide and 12” high, to go with each pie. One of the pies, donated annually by Joany Bund, will rest atop a beautifully crafted birdhouse that will go home with a lucky bidder. Fueled by heated bidding, one pie went for more than $2,000 last year! Additional auction items will include a one-of-a-kind weaving from Studio Donegal, which McCarthy and friend

The overwhelming variety of merchandise offered by “big box” retailers sometimes eclipses the unique opportunities that shopping locally affords. While local retailers may not occupy the thousands of square feet that major retailers do, they offer a more unique inventory of items than can be carried by big chains. Small businesses also are more likely to carry Americanmade goods, including locallymade items that are unique to the area. If long lines and over-worked, unhappy sales associates are what you often encounter at the mall, then consider the friendly, personalized customer service that you could get at a business just down the street. Indeed, communities like Ellicottville, Allegany, Randolph and Olean provide many opportunities for Cattaraugus County residents to shop locally throughout the holiday season. Handmade gifts, apparel, spa and restaurant gift certificates and tasty treats are just some of the items that local businesses offer. According to Crystal Abers, director of the Cattaraugus County Economic Development, Planning and Tourism, local businesses and artisans are becoming a
mainstay of holiday shopping. “People seem to be going back to the local, homemade shopping experience,” explained Abers, “which means events like the W.I.L.M.A. Craft Show and Small Business Saturday are becoming more popular.” Indeed, the countysponsored W.I.L.M.A. craft show two weekends ago saw an increase in holiday shoppers looking for unique gifts. “This county offers a diverse range of businesses and goods that you can’t find in big stores,” said Abers. Hand-crafted jewelry, toys, and local foods like maple syrup, honey, and horseradish are just a few of the local items that make great gifts, especially for out-of-town relatives. Abers cites the county’s well-known wineries and distilleries, especially those in the Ellicottville area, as great sources of local gifts. Don’t be afraid to venture outside the downtown, too, as outlying businesses like alpaca farms have cozy accessories for every member of the family. While the trend to shop local is on the rise, Abers believes there’s opportunity for people to get more involved. This year marks the sixth year of Small Business Saturday, an event created by American Express to promote locally-owned businesses in 2010. Since then, the day has gained traction nationwide, as Small Business Saturday was officially recognized by the Senate in 2011. According to Forbes.com, a 2014 survey from the National Federation of Independent Businesses and American Express revealed that 88 million consumers “shopped small” on November 29, 2014, which was an increase of 14.9 percent from 2013. An impressive $14.3 billion was spent with independent retailers and restaurants on the day, up 2.1 percent from 2013. Equally impressive is the public recognition of Small Business Saturday, especially given the foothold that its notorious counterpart, Black Friday, has maintained for decades. According to Forbes. com, 67 percent of Americans were aware of Small Business Saturday in 2014, and on the day itself, 126,000 tweets were sent with such hashtags as #SmallBizSat and #ShopSmall. American Express continues to sponsor Small Business Saturday by offering small businesses a variety of free marketing tools that are available at ShopSmall.com. From posters to tote bags to digital marketing materials, American Express has made sure to bring their catch phrase, “Shop Small,” to the attention of more consumers every year. The Art of Snow Jim Moor of Ellicottville, New York, is the featured artist at the Ellicottville Memorial Library through November and December. This exhibition features his photography in an exhibit entitled ‘THE ART OF SNOW IN BLACK AND WHITE’. The winter landscapes are in black and white printed on silver paper. Mr. Moor’s eye for the grace and contrasts of our coldest months produce scenes of exceptional beauty and serenity. In the artist’s words: “I have lived in western New York for over forty years. Having come from the flat topography of northwest Ohio, I immediately fell in love with our hills and valleys. They have provided me a strong sense of natural beauty as well as a definition of place. Seasonal change is more abrupt here than in Ohio. This is especially true of winter. It seems almost on a daily basis our winters become our shared conversation.
While I continually hear of the complaints, I am more attracted to those who remark about the beauty of this season…the landscapes that capture our eye. These landscapes are readily evident to us and provide us a shared experience and a definition of ourselves. However, through photography I sought to reduce our broad winter vistas in order to discover the art of winter in its smaller form. I found this art in our icy creeks, in our wind formed drifts, hanging on our branches, and on the shadows cast upon the snow. However, like all of us, I could not ignore the landscapes. My hope is that
the viewers of my collection will themselves make an effort to discover the beautiful art of snow in small places. It will be as rewarding to you as it is to me.” Jim Moor is a professor of Political Science, previously at St Bonaventure, and currently at SUNY Geneseo. Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts Hold Food Drive This Saturday the Ellicottville Cub Scout Pack will be collecting food for the local Pantry outside of Tops Market, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Boy Scout Troop will be placing requests for donations on doors and will be collecting donations door to door, for the Pantry, also on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
