Prepare for a Stress-Free Vet Visit Dear Readers: A few weeks ago, veterinarian Sheila Fitzpatrick, DVM, contacted the Ellicottville Times to ask if we’d be interested in her writing a veterinary advice column. Of course, we jumped at the chance! Not only is Dr. Fitzpatrick an expert in her field, but you might just know her, too, because she’s a 1983 graduate of Ellicottville Central School. She’s also a graduate of Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and owns Mountain Mobile Veterinary Service in Eagle and Vail, Colorado, where she cares for small and large animals. She’s a frequent visitor to Ellicottville where her parents still live and her father Dana and brothers Greg and Dan own and run Fitzpatrick and Weller.

It’s that time of year again. You received notice that your beloved dog “Duke” and precious cat “Iris” are due for their annual veterinary visits. Suddenly, anxiety sets in as your heart begins to beat faster, your palms start to sweat and you wonder: “How can I cope with another visit to the vet? It was SO stressful last time. Veterinary visits are an essential part of every pet’s life, not just for routine checkups and vaccinations, but also for pet emergencies. You, as a pet owner, can avoid the inevitable stress both YOU and YOUR PET typically feel by taking some steps beforehand to minimize the anxiety. • Familiarize your pet at an early age by taking them to
your veterinarian just to say hello, ask the office personnel for some tasty treats in the waiting room, perhaps weigh your pet and then leave. Make it a positive experience for both of you! • Touch your pet a lot. It sounds crazy right? But starting from day one, you should massage your pet’s ears, paws and gums so when your veterinarian examines your pet, it will be easier for him/her to look down ear canals, do a good oral exam and trim nails. • Take your dog or cat on a car ride for short errands so your pet does not associate every car ride with a trip to the vet. Provide positive rewards, too, like a trip to your pet’s favorite park along the way. • Don’t use a carrier that your pet only sees when they go to the vet! Leave that carrier around the house so your pet can enter in and out freely. And take several trips with your pet in that carrier that do not end in a veterinary office. • Use familiar bedding. Take a blanket from your home that has familiar smells and put it in the carrier or give it to the veterinarian if the pet will stay for the day. Also, lavender and some other natural scents are known to have a calming
effect. You could even spray some in the back of the car or on the blanket you take with you. • Bring your pet’s favorite treats. If your pet receives positive rewards during the visit with something he/she really loves, this will also have a calming and more positive impact • Lastly, you need to calm down. Pets sense your anxiety and that makes them anxious. Pets that are nervous and anxious can present differently to the veterinarian – for example, they may have a higher than normal temperature. Arrive early for your visit and walk around. Relax! Some pets even benefit more if you are not present during the exam if you are nervous or anxious. It’s important for you to assure your pet that everything is going to be OK! Good luck!

Tune In to Ski Season By David Potter
Each year at this time, my conversations with the “Usual Gang of Idiots” start to turn to the upcoming ski season. We might be hanging out on the deck, sweating in the late summer heat, and the talk will turn to our past skiing exploits. Of course, the conversations also turn to the upcoming winter. Will it be a cold winter? Will we get an early start on the season like last year? And eventually, what is the state of my ski gear? It’s then I’ll be asked “the question.” When are you planning on having your ski tuning party? Every year, my longsuffering wife and I hold a ski tuning party. Unfortunately, over the years I have taught the Usual Gang of Idiots the importance of skiing on a pair of well-tuned skis. Also, unfortunately, I have tuned their skis for them. And even worse, I have never taught any of them to tune their own skis. It was my wife’s idea to turn my labors into a party. She arranges an acceptable date with everyone to bring their ski gear, food and a few adult beverages. And that promptly sends me into a deep panic. You see, during the summer months, my
tuning room and tuning bench turn into my workroom and workbench — and I’m not the neatest person in the world. So, by the time fall rolls around, the room and bench are buried. A couple of weeks before the appointed date, I do what I should have been doing right along — clean up my work area. When the day of the party arrives and the gang shows up to enjoy themselves, that’s when I start to work. Actually, I enjoy tuning skis. Over the years, I have acquired a fairly large collection of tuning and repair tools and I do enjoy showing them off. Plus, a group of the Idiots will sit around the work area and watch as I tune their skis. This gives me the opportunity to tell them what they have been doing right or wrong with their gear. Last year, I started working on a pair of Stockli skis when I noticed the tails were starting to delaminate. In other words, the epoxies that bind the layers of the ski together were starting to fail. There are several ways this can happen. One of the ways is improper storage. I suspected the skis spent the summer resting on concrete.
It turns out the skis had spent the entire ski season stored in the back of a pickup truck under a tonneau. No doubt the constant heat and freeze cycle took a toll on these oncefine skis. The damage was repairable, but the skis will never be the same. One of the Idiots, I suspect, stores his family’s skis in a salt bath. Every year, he brings them to the party with the edges encrusted in rust. Every year, I tell them he needs to find a drier space to store them. And every year, he tells me that it is dry where he stores them. The evidence would suggest otherwise. I have now bought a special power tool just to remove the rust from his skis (this will cost him an extra gift certificate, although he doesn’t know that yet). The day of the ski tuning party, I only tune for a couple of hours. Eventually, my wife gets impatient and makes me stop so I can socialize and enjoy the company of the Idiots. The rest of the skis are tuned as I get time over the next week or so. I really look forward to this annual party and seeing the state of everyone’s gear. It’s not a bad way to get your mind and gear ready for the upcoming ski season.

area in the U.S. has been busy executing $650,000 in improvements. HoliMont generates its own electricity and will use some of this budget to upgrade to its generators. About $300,000 is being put toward a variety of enhancements at the resort. Water pumping upgrades, replacing and adding new snowmaking water lines, and new snowmaking tower locations are just some of the improvements that have taken place as a result of that investment. The snowmaking upgrades may allow some slopes to open earlier in the season. With a new paint job, Greer lift will look more like Exhibition Express. The top and bottom lift houses are also being refurbished. With an eye on safety, the lifts are being rebuilt and ďŹ ne-tuned to make sure they meet code. Additionally, a new roof was installed on the terrain park building and the ski patrol hut at the top of Exhibition is in the process of being completely refurbished. The resort’s PistenBully 100 was replaced with a Green Tech 300 ParkBully, which serves double duty as a mower for the slopes in the summer. According to Dash Hegeman, HoliMont’s marketing director, additional sprucing up has been completed on parts of the chalet’s exterior, with some new siding and a few new windows for the main ofďŹ ce. Interior changes include an updated Dina’s at the ’Mont cafeteria area to allow for better trafďŹ c ow. A half dozen small changes to bathrooms and to various table setups have been made to increase seating capacity. Changes on the slopes include preparing a new area for beginners’ slopes Chipmunk and Rabbit’s Run, both of which ideally will be moved to the WestMont Ridge next summer, along with moving the lifts and snowmaking equipment. These slopes are unchanged and accessible this year.
“The reason that we are moving the beginner area is to give people who are learning to ski and snowboard an even better on-hill experience. The new area will offer beginners more terrain at with a more friendly slope gradient,â€? Hegeman explained. “Our mountain crew will be able to groom and shape this new slope in ways that will make the learning process much more enjoyable, which statistics have shown will help retain ďŹ rst-time skiers/ snowboarders. The entire ski industry is looking for ways to attract millennials and we strongly believe that this is an area that will help us achieve that goal.â€? HoliMont has also added nine tower locations on Exhibition and other towers on areas like Downspout, which will allow these key slopes to open earlier in the season when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. The resort plans to open mid-December. WestMont Ridge In addition to the great slopes already there, HoliMont has cut a new slope adjacent to the WestMont Ridge area. Hegeman said it will probably be “a combination of a blue and a black and you’ll access it by the lift we will put in. No other hills will connect to it. You will, however, be able to ski from the bottom of Sunset to the chair we will be installing, so it’s very easy access.â€? The lift and lights for Friday and Saturday night skiing will likely not be in place until the 2017-2018 season, at the earliest. “Next summer, the focus will be on moving the beginner area,â€? said Hegeman. The WestMont Ridge development’s Phase 1,
including infrastructure such as gas, water and sewer, is now in place. To date, 20 single-family lots have been sold, with 11 remaining on the market. Construction for the ďŹ rst home is well underway. Phase 1 also includes 72 condominiums and HoliMont is working hard to get them to market. The condos are anticipated to be offered for sale this winter, with groundbreaking next spring. In addition, HoliMont built a signiďŹ cant amount of wetlands acreage off to the side of Horizon Pond as part of the Army Corps of Engineers’ requirements for the WestMont project. “We are now tasked with making sure that those wetlands meet the goals and objectives of their requirements,â€? said Hegeman. A new lodge, terrain park, Nordic Center, lift and lights for weekend nighttime skiing, plus replacement of the Sunset chair with a high-speed detachable lift are all part of the master plan. It all hinges on a variety of factors, including lot and condominium sales, so there is no concrete timeline when these things will happen. “We haven’t started Phase 2 yet. It has been designed and accommodated for, but the ďŹ nal permitting and design work is not complete,â€? Hegeman said. “We are likely two years away from Phase 2, which is the 63 single-family lots.â€? In the meantime, the HoliMont staff is working feverishly to prepare for the upcoming ski season. Members and weekday visitors will surely approve of all the changes. Take a look for yourself this weekend, or just head over for a free chairlift ride on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

fishing tackle, luggage, cool gadgets and all sorts of other adventure gear. The Boardroom on Main & The Boardroom Snowboard Shop. Tips for a Safe Fall Festival • Know where you are staying and the phone number (there are a lot of condos and rental houses). Know how you are getting home and where you are going. • Have an emergency plan. Know where to meet if you are separated or cell service is unavailable • Keep your pets at home. It’s crowded. They will be happier as will all concerned. • Rethink that huge stroller or wagon. Again, it’s crowded. • Dress accordingly. You will be walking and temps and weather conditions change quickly, so be prepared! • Fake ID? Don’t even think about it. Bouncers will definitely be looking for them. Backpacks and large purses will not be allowed into bars/beer tents. • The Open Container Law, Public Urination Law and Occupancy Codes will be strictly enforced. • Don’t travel alone, and use sidewalks outside of festival areas. There IS traffic. • Eat and stay hydrated. Popcorn & alcohol don’t cut it. • Support local organizations and not-for-profits. They have a huge part in making this all happen! • Traffic ‌ expect it. Parking ‌ interesting. Shuttles are available to designated locations. Expect to walk. • It’s crowded. Keep your cool, be patient in traffic, with servers, employees and others all around. • Behave, have fun, keep it in check. Remember you are a guest or host, so show respect to all.

Make Fall Festival Safe and Enjoyable As Ellicottville readies itself to host its largest Festival of the year, we would like to let you know what we have been working on. The Special Events committee, Ellicottville Police Dept., Cattaraugus Co. Sheriff’s Dept., NY State Police, EVL Fire Dept., Village and Town Boards, Code Enforcement, Dept. of Public Works, Chamber of Commerce, NY State Dept. of Transportation, along with input from local residents, merchants and bar owners, have been working diligently on ways to improve and refine Fall Festival as we know it. Numerous work sessions and meetings have been conducted to review and address both the weak and the strong points of the Festival, with the main goal being to provide a quality event while maintaining safety, control and integrity to our residents, guests and properties. ZERO TOLERANCE is the LAW and will be strictly enforced. This means absolutely no alcohol is allowed on village streets. You will not be allowed to leave an establishment or private property, walk to, from or within the village with open containers. Drink it or leave it. Public intoxication and disorderly conduct will not be tolerated. NOISE LEVELS have been addressed with the local bars and beer tents. Outdoor live music will end at 11 p.m. (quieter, background music till 12 a.m.) in accordance with the local sound level ordinance. Establishments with indoor music will follow the sound ordinance for volumes as written. House parties will also be obligated to obey this law. PARKING: We strongly encourage carpooling, use of shuttles or walk! Space is limited and illegally parked vehicles (including motorcycles) will be ticketed and towed. Fire lanes, hydrants, and sidewalks are not to be blocked. Observe all temporary and regular no parking signs. Flagmen for private lots are not allowed in the streets. Illegally parked vehicles on private property are the land owners responsibility. BUSES: The hired bus drop and pick up site will be located at the DPW building on Mill & Martha Streets. Parking for the buses is on RTE 219, beyond Holiday Valley Rd. at the old driving range site. Buses will NOT be allowed to load or unload elsewhere. Bus lines will be notified of open container law, and will be expected to adhere. Shuttle Service: The daytime loading site is at Jefferson & Martha St. Sat & Sun 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. The evening site has been moved back to the OLD Kwik Fill from 7-p.m. to 4 a.m. The shuttle destinations will be to most of the condo areas, other destinations will require the taxi service (call the Chamber of Commerce for info: 699-5046). Taxi Call: 375-TAXI. Call in advance as they can be very busy. POLICE WILL NOT GIVE YOU A RIDE! Rest rooms: There will be plenty of port-o-johns provided throughout the festival area. They are cleaned routinely. Use them! Public urination is against the law. Emergency and First Aid location: Sheriff and First Aid trailers will be located on Washington St. by Coffee Culture. Occupancy Codes: The code enforcement officer and police agencies will be on duty to inspect occupancy loads, both public and private. These codes will be strictly enforced. CELL SERVICE: Have a plan if the towers go down. Know where to meet if you are separated. VENDORS: Vendors are to visibly display vendor & health dept. permits on tents. Sandwich boards, tables/ chairs and merchandise will not be allowed on sidewalks & tree lawns in order to keep an open line of site for emergency personnel. Vendors are responsible for removal of their trash. Help make Fall Festival safe and enjoyable. If you see something illegal, report it. If you see a mess, clean it up. Play by the rules. In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Bertrand Chaffee Hospital is providing the following information about breast cancer screenings and mammograms to our neighbors. The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly 15,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Screenings like mammograms can detect breast cancer at an early stage, when treatment is more effective, and can increase treatment options. All women should take a few minutes each
month to do a breast self-exam, feeling for lumps, thickenings or hardened areas. Women over the age of 40 should schedule a mammogram every year or as recommended by their healthcare provider. And, women with a close family member who has had breast or ovarian cancer should talk to their healthcare provider about
the risks for breast cancer. relief. Until now, pedestrians carrying all their gear had to walk across a major thoroughfare to get to the lodge and other main areas of the resort. It could be a bit tricky, both for pedestrians and drivers trying to access parking areas or travel on to other lodges and homes. And so, in the spring, construction began and on October 6, the new road was opened to some fanfare and celebration in recognition of the project that involved both Holiday Valley staff and the Town of Ellicottville’s board, engineers, highway superintendents and others through various administrations. It is important to note that Holiday Valley, throughout the process, met the stringent requirements of the town. According to
the resort, “Holiday Valley was responsible for all aspects of the construction, including design, engineering, permitting, construction and inspection. Northrup Construction of Ellicottville was the general contractor and MDA Engineering provided the engineering plans. The total cost to Holiday Valley for the 2/3-mile road was $1.1 million.” Because the original roadway was owned and maintained by the town, the ribbon cutting ceremony also had an official purpose. Holiday Valley officially
“dedicated” the new road to the town, which will continue to plow and maintain it. And, as town Supervisor John Burrell explained, “in exchange for this new road, we the Town are giving Holiday Valley [the] old wellused road” in front of the main lodge area. taxpayers. “Today, the Town has accepted this beautiful new highway. This is a great deal for the Town. It is state of the art and much safer. Not only does it serve one of our community’s great resorts, it serves our Town residential taxpayers who live on Holiday Valley Road, Upper Road and Buchan Ridge Road. On behalf of the Town, I want to thank Dennis [Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley’s president] and WinSum for this great new road.” By next spring, the existing road in front of the lodge, administration and operations buildings will be removed and replaced with more parking and a wide area with steps, grassy areas and landscaping leading to the main lodge. More work is also needed on the arrival area and bus drop off.

The sculptures and landscapes of Griffis Sculpture Park are once again illuminated with colorful and theatrical lighting during “NIGHT LIGHTS at Griffis Sculpture Park.” There will be new and improved lighting this year, which will enhance the guest’s visit to NIGHT LIGHTS. There will be the addition of two sound systems adding soundscapes to the already surreal environment.
NIGHT LIGHTS will be open Wednesday, Oct. 7 to Sunday, Oct. 12. The trails will be open from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 7 to 10 p.m. on weekends. Guests will be able to venture on an unguided walk through a portion of the Mill Valley Road site of the sculpture park, where the trails and sculptures will interact with creative lighting – creating a truly unique experience. encouraged to bring flashlights for a few darker sections of the trail. Admission is $10 adults, $5 children ages 7 to 12, and free for ages six and under. and a very warm welcome. Fans of Katy’s Café at 10A Washington St. will be excited to hear about Katy’s Fly-In restaurant just a few miles from Ellicottville at 4836 Rt. 219 in Great Valley. If you’re looking to invest in the Ellicottville vacation scene, you should take a look at several new residential communities that are in
3rd Saturday Treks at Allegany State Park Get out of the house and come join in the fun as Allegany State Park (ASP) continues its eries of hikes called “3rd Saturday Treks.” As the name implies, these free, family-friendly hikes will take place on the 3rd Saturday of each month from March through October. The treks will be led by park staff, members of the Allegany State Park Friends Group, or Historical Society members and each will focus on a different area of the park. This month’s trek will take place on Oct. 17. Participants will be taken on an Interpretative hike into the old growth forest in Allegany State Park. The hike, led by lead naturalist, Adele Wellman, is on a relatively easy hiking trail approximately two miles long. This trek encompasses a portion of the North Country Trail as well as the Finger Lakes Trail. The hike crosses several old ski trails that were once a part of the Big Basin ski area, large stands of black cherry and hemlock, and leads to a view of the Bay State Area. Attendees are asked to meet at the parking area across from the Eastwood Meadows Hiking Trail Head (program site 64), located on ASP Rt. 1 between France Brook and Bay State Roads, at 10 a.m., and to come dressed for the weather. The hike will last approximately two hours. Registration is not required. One of Ellicottville’s most historic buildings, the 1887 schoolhouse building at the corner of Jefferson and Washington streets, is being restored to its finest, as the new owners turn the interior into a 7-10 unit luxury condominium with underground parking. Two new housing developments are under construction on Fillmore Street: the Glendale project, a townhouse community with nine buildings (18 units) on the east side, and Colton Corners, a 19-lot, single-family home subdivision, on the west side. On Martha Street at the former American Locker site, developers expect to break ground within the next two months on EVLofts, an 18-unit rental apartment complex. The project’s targeted completion is fall 2016. Just beyond the village, developers are creating 42 Degrees North, a 144-acre resort off Poverty Hill Road. The resort, which will feature 24 lots on 5-8 acres each, will be a four-season vacation property with a community lodge, tennis, swimming pool, Nordic spa, event space, designated trails and more. And in the Town of Mansfield on HoliMont property, construction of the first home on 31 single-family lots at WestMont Ridge is well underway. Eleven lots are still available for purchase. Plus, 18 new condominium buildings with four units each (72 total) that will be located in the Sunset area are in the design and planning stages. Resort Investments Both Holiday Valley and HoliMont have made and continue to make significant investments in their properties to enhance the resort experience for all visitors. Holiday Valley Road has invested $4 million in 2015-16 projects and improvements at the resort. The realignment of Holiday Valley Road is the largest and most expensive of the projects. The multi-year project improves access to the resort, parking, traffic and pedestrian circulation, and safety by rerouting the road above and around the main parking area, allowing pedestrians direct access to the base area. See story, cover. Other projects include installation of 37 new automated snow guns, addition of night lights on several slopes, new equipment for Sky High Adventure Park, new grooming equipment, ongoing renovation of the Inn, golf course improvements and more. HoliMont has put $650,000
into improvements this year. Nearly half of that was invested into the resort’s power plant and snowmaking operations, which may allow the club to open some slopes earlier this year. The resort also has made a variety of improvements to the main chalet, chairlifts, Chipmunk and Rabbit’s Run beginner slopes and more. (See story, cover.) New Local Laws Residents and visitors to Ellicottville should be aware of two new local laws that may affect them. In September, the Town of Ellicottville passed the Local Alarm Law that will require property owners to obtain annual permits for their alarm systems and to keep them in good working order. Its intent is to ensure that fire and police are able to contact property owners if their alarms go off, either due to a true emergency or a false alarm. It is also intended to reduce the number of false alarms, which are a burden on local fire and police departments. Town property owners will be informed about the details of the new law through local newspapers, inserts in their annual tax bills and, for some, personal phone calls. In the Village of Ellicottville, a law requiring “owners and occupants of land to cut, trim or remove brush, grass, rubbish and weeds” was amended to allow the village to fine and/or place a lien on real property if the village itself must mow or remove rubbish and brush on properties that are vacant or poorly maintained. In addition, the village passed a second law allowing certain public servants, in addition to police, to issue appearance tickets for violations. Ellicottville Central School After years of planning, Ellicottville Central Schools recently held a ribbon cutting to officially open its new, $10+ million renovation project that includes a new multi-purpose gymnasium, renovation of 10 classrooms, replacement of the elementary school’s ventilation systems, roof repairs and much more. Construction has not interrupted the school’s main purpose, however, and results on state assessment rankings prove it. ECS remains the highest ranked district, elementary school, middle school and high school in Cattaraugus County and has shown marked gains in almost every academic ranking category since last year. The district ranked #1 for the third year in a row for teacher experience in all of Western New York.

“Overall, a clean opinion” is the result of the auditors finding after reviewing the 2014-2015 financial situation of the Ellicottville Central School District. The School Board heard from auditing firm R.A. Mercer during its October 6 meeting. A few changes to the accounting practices need to happen, according to the auditor’s findings, but overall, those changes are minor. New government standards in relationship to pensions reflect some changes in the reports. The board voted to accept the auditor’s report. Superintendent Mark Ward filled in the board regarding the ongoing capital project, and expressed some displeasure on the status of the electrical work. Ward said he plans to meet with the contractor to see if he can resolve remaining issues. Ward explained that while there are some minor details to address regarding the stage curtain in the new gym, the bleacher control unit and the locker room showers, most of the contractors have been working with the district to resolve those issues. Ward said the project as a whole is wrapping up nicely. Ward also shared his satisfaction with the recent inclusion of the West Valley Central School students to the sports teams, but explained that he is not satisfied with the State Athletic Association’s application of the Transfer Rule. He said it’s being unfairly applied to this particular situation, and he has responded
with a strongly worded letter to the association. He recently shared his concerns with other superintendants at a convention, who, Ward said, affirmed his position on the matter. Administrators from West Valley have been invited to an informal meet-and-greet later in the month. Ward said he intends to show off the Ellicottville facility and offer West Valley access to the school’s other extracurricular programs. The board discussed the idea of establishing a policy regarding texting between faculty, athletics staff and students. The idea was borne out of a conversation between Ward and a representative from Utica Insurance, as they talked about ways the school can reduce liability and protect staff and students simply by developing policies. Ward said that Utica insures 99 school districts, and so far, only six have texting policies in place. Ward noted that most texting “between students and staff is perfectly fine and appropriate.” They’re usually reminders from coaches or teachers about sports or play practices, he said. However, having a policy will help to make sure that parents are involved in that communication. He passed out a sample permission slip, and the board agreed to consider how the policy should be crafted. Board member Nicole Klein agreed that parents should be involved in texts from coaches and teachers. “Call me a control freak, but
I want to know what’s going on with my kids,” she said. He also said that the insurance rep went over policies and procedures about sports, and concussions – and Ward affirmed that the school’s policies regarding sports injuries were on track with the insurance recommendations. Board member Bill Murphy made a motion to approve that the school district pay the college-level course fees for ECS students taking courses offered by the district. At its last meeting, the board discussed paying next year’s fees and books, but there was some confusion about how this year would work, since many students had already paid for some classes. High School Principal Bob Miller said he is working with District Treasurer Aimee Kilby to make sure that parents who have paid can be reimbursed. Some of the colleges have not billed the students yet and some students have paid for half of their classes, so a little strategy and planning will have to be put into place. Miller and Kilby assured the board they would make sure it gets resolved. The board accepted resignations from teacher aide Annette Auteri, and also from Jaclyn James and Suzana Bartimole, who are stepping down from the role of senior class advisors. Miller and Ward assured the board they would be able to find replacements for the senior class advisors. The next meeting of the ECS School Board will be held on Tuesday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library.

Ellicottville Girls Soccer On Sept. 29, the Eagles Girls Varsity soccer team lost to Allegany/Limestone 2-1. Sophomore Evie Cortez had the lone goal. On Oct. 1, the Eagles beat Franklinville 8-0. Junior Jenna Aldrich had three goals and senior Morgan Zlockie had one goal and three assists. Evie Cortez, Kourtney Robinson, Karly Siperek and Brenna Cole
each had a goal, while Shelby Toth pitched in with an assist. On Oct. 3, the team lost to Class A Williamsville East 5-0. The Eagles JV Girls soccer team lost both games this week. Olean beat the Eagles 3-1. Tessa Sullivan scored for the Eagles. Williamsville East beat the team by a score of 3-1, as well. Lousia Benatovich scored off a throw-in. The Girls Modified soccer team finished 0-2 on the week. Boys Varsity Soccer The Boys Varsity Soccer team defeated AlleganyLimestone 2-1 in double overtime. Noah Stuve and Nick DiDonato scored. Avery Seiflein made 13 saves. The Eagles also defeated Franklinville 7-1. Jack Haley, Jay Borowiak, Robert Sawicki, Quinn O’Rourke, Cam Eddy, Matt DiDonato and Nick DiDonato all scored. Avery Seiflein made three saves. The boys varsity record is 8-2-2. Football The Franklinville/ Ellicottville Titans Football team marched into a wet, soggy Clymer, NY, on Saturday to
take on the combined teams from Clymer, Panama & Sherman and walked out with a 21-6 victory. The Titans were led by a balanced running game from seniors Caleb Rinko (19 carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns) and Jonas Hurlburt (nine carries for 84 yards and a touchdown). Dooley Brennan and Preston Hutchinson led the Titans defensively with four tackles each. The Ellicottville Little Eagles completed their seasons this past weekend. The Pee Wee Eagles beat the Salamanca Sabers with the balanced running of twins Caedon and Braylon Wyatt as they carried the bulk of the load with Caedon rushing for over 130 yards and multiple touchdowns. The Eagles finished with a 5-1 record and look to have a #2 seed entering the playoffs. The Midgets lost a hard fought battle to the Sabers, finishing the season 5-1 and await the seeding to find out where they will play in the playoffs.

Annual Tony Reid Memorial Mileage Challenge Oct. 17
Fundraisers, raffles, donations and benefits are all too common words in our WNY vocabulary. As a community, these words have come to represent the emotion of its members with faith, resilience, determination and blessings. Cancer touches everyone, closer and closer and every day. Ideally, there would be a world without illness, but we haven’t reached that point. Roswell Park Cancer Institute is here in our WNY community doing what they can to help families with their battles against Cancer related illness. The Reid family and the GHD family are fully aware of these struggles. In 2006, Tony, late owner of Gowanda Harley-Davidson (GHD), was diagnosed with AILD (Angiommunoblastic Lymphadenopathy with Dysproteinanmia), a rare T-cell Lymphoma. He had accepted this disease and was ready to battle it with courage, strength and faith. Over the next three years, he was in and out of Roswell Park Cancer Institute receiving chemo treatments, making new friends and still talking motorcycles with the
staff. By 2008, Tony was in need of a bone marrow transplant and with the help of his family, friends and community, a match was found. In June 2009, Tony received his bone marrow transplant. Every day was a challenge for him, but on July 3, 2009, Tony lost his battle. His final journey… ”Keep The Faith.” It is time again for the Tony Reid Memorial Mileage Challenge Reception. GHD and the Reid Family hold an annual fundraiser in their brother Tony’s memory. Tony’s memory is that of a guy who loved his family, Harley-Davidsons, riding, live music and good times. This year, the format of the fundraiser reception event has changed to reflect those memories. Please join us at the Gowanda American Legion Post #409 on Oct. 17, 2015 at 5 p.m. for an exciting evening. There will be basket raffles from great local businesses, a silent auction and dinner by Chef’s Restaurant (only $8 per person!). Silent Auction items include a Box Seat Experience to a Buffalo Sabres Game. A special treat this year is live music by some Gowanda
locals who knew Tony. JB Martin Smoking Dog Band will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. and will offer to share the stage with some old friends and family of Tony’s, “like the old days”. As always, 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to Roswell Park Cancer Institute, including the money collected from the dinner provided by Chef’s. Chef’s Restaurant has generously donated their time and food for all five past events. Gowanda Harley-Davidson is accepting donations of gift baskets or silent auction items. If you would like to make a monetary donation, you can drop it off or mail it to the dealership made payable to “Roswell Park Alliance Foundation” or wait until the event where Roswell Representatives will be present. This event helps to raise awareness and funds for the battle against cancer and the belief that someday we can be educated enough to have a world without cancer. Please mark your calendars for this worthy cause and join in to celebrate the life we have. “Keep the Faith.”

Allegany Area Hist. Assoc. Meets Oct. 18
The Allegany Area Historical Association will meet on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Heritage Center, 25 North Second Street, Allegany. Mr. Earl McElfresh will speak about Cattaraugus County, some interesting facts and figures, intriguing
historical data and much more. A graduate of St. Lawrence University, McElfresh is a Cattaraugus County legislator and President of McElfresh Map Company, which has specialized in Civil War maps for 23 years. The company has also produced maps about
the Underground Railroad, the Louisiana Purchase and D-Day. The historical association’s newly restored 1856 map of Cattaraugus County will also be on display. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Guinness Project Challenge Jan. 8 Here’s your chance to make it into the record book! On Jan. 8, you can be part of the organizers of the Learn to Ski and Snowboard Initiative (LSSI) to set the record for the World’s Largest Ski and Snowboard Lessons (WLL) – The “Guinness Project.” On Friday, Jan. 8, at 10 a.m. local time, ski resorts all over the country will be
offering beginner lessons in the organization’s attempt to set world records for the largest single-venue ski lesson, the largest single venue snowboard lesson, the largest multi-venue ski lesson and the largest multivenue snowboard lesson. According to Guinness World Records, the record will be achieved if a single organization (in this case
LSSI) can gather the “greatest number of people attending and participating in a skiing [or snowboarding] lesson at multiple locations…” To date, we know that Holiday Valley has signed up to participate, so tell your beginner friends and family members to get psyched!
