Hike or mountain bike up instead. Holiday Valley’s mountain biking and hiking network consists of challenging uphill and downhill trails, logging roads and singletrack. Over 35 of miles of trails connect to McCarty Hill State Forest on the southern border of the resort. For the nature photographer in you, bring your camera. GV Sets Public Hearing for 2016 Budget By Colleen Mahoney
The preliminary 2016 budget for the Town of Great Valley was approved by the town board at its Monday, Oct. 12 meeting. Preliminary budgets must be adopted by the board before it can become the official budget. The preliminary budget outlines estimated revenues of
$421,247 for the town’s general fund, which includes $295,949 in real property taxes. The highway department’s budget of $616,653 reflects $101,500 of anticipated non-tax revenue plus $515,153 in property tax revenue. The total budget of $1,087,215 also includes special district lighting, sewer
and water funds; the total to be raised through property taxes is $853,417. The board set a public hearing for Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. Pending public comment, the board will then formally adopt the 2016 town budget. During the board meeting, the board approved shifting See GV Town Board page 6

Titans Clinch Title The Franklinville/ Ellicottville Titans clinched the Section 6, Class D football title with its 29-22 win over the Frewsburg Bears last Friday night at Franklinville. The Eagles were led by senior Tommy Easton at quarterback, who completed 7 of 14 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 14 yards and had two touchdowns. Senior Caleb Rinko had 17 carries for 55 yards and had a rushing and a reception touchdown. Senior Jonas Hurlburt had three receptions for 85 yards on the night. Sophomore Brock Blecha led the defense with seven tackles, while Preston Hutchinson and Hurlburt each recorded sacks. The Titans take on the Salamanca Warriors at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 16 at ECS where it is also Senior Night and Homecoming. Boys Varsity Soccer The Boys Varsity Soccer team defeated Randolph 4 - 3 on Wednesday, Oct.7. Scoring for the Eagles was Ben Zoeller with two goals. Brennan Finn and Matt DiDonato scored the other goals. Robert Spell made seven saves in the net. The team lost to WestďŹ eldBrocton 4 - 3 on Friday night. The Boy’s record stands at 9-3-2. Girls Varsity Soccer The Girls Varsity Soccer team ďŹ nished last week 2-0. On Oct. 8 at Randolph, the Eagles came away with a 3-1 overtime win. Senior Morgan Zlockie had all three goals for the Eagles. Freshman Robin Freaney (with two saves for the game) made a brilliant save on a penalty kick to keep the game tied in regulation 1-1. Zlockie scored two more goals in the second 10-minute overtime period to seal the victory. On Saturday at ECS, the Eagles beat the Salamanca Warriors 2-0. Zlockie and Junior Jenna Aldrich each had one goal. Freaney had the shutout with four saves. Girls JV Soccer The Girls JV Soccer team lost to Holland 3-0, playing a hard game against a very skilled team on Monday Oct. 5. On Tuesday, Oct. 6 they beat Class B Springville 2-1. Tessa Sullivan and Ande Wilson scored for the Eagles, while Haven Ford had both assists. Lisa Krotz and Abby Proctor split time in goal. The JV lady eagles ďŹ nish up their season this week against Allegany on Tuesday and Jamestown on Saturday. Volleyball The Eagles Varsity Volleyball team ďŹ nished the week 1-1. In their match against Pine

Larry A. Oeffling passed away Saturday (Oct. 10, 2015) at Olean General Hospital after a brief illness. Born Feb. 26, 1959, in Harvard, Ill., he was a son of Francis Oeffling and Judy Gallas. On July 4, 1998, at Holy Name of Mary Church, Ellicottville, he married Louise Stokes, who survives. Oeffling was a graduate of Marian Central School in Woodstock, Ill., and later of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill. He had been employed in general sales and was passionate about his career in real estate sales. He obtained his broker’s license in 1987 while residing in Florida,
where he worked for a private brokerage company. Upon moving to Ellicottville, he and his wife established Ellicottville Real Estate in 2002. Right up until his death, he was active with his broker’s license and his customers in the real estate market. One of his proudest accomplishments was that he was a self-taught pianist. Music was a lifelong passion, as were all kinds of sports. He was a member of Holy Name of Mary Church in Ellicottville and the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce. Surviving besides his wife are his father, Francis (Donna) Oeffling of Exeland, Wis.; three children, Meg Johnston
of New York City, Elizabeth Johnston of Fredonia and Paul Johnston of Ellicottville; one sister, Sally Wiggins of Ashland, Ore.; and a nephew, Baylor Wiggins. He was predeceased by his mother and a brother, Frankie Oeffling. A memorial Mass will be scheduled at Holy Name of Mary Church in Ellicottville for a date and time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to “P.A.L.,” an established fund for needy Nicaraguan schoolchildren, P.O. Box 7, Ellicottville, NY 14731. $7,000 to the real property estimated tax revenues. Town Supervisor Dan Brown explained that the $7,000 was loaned to the Bonne Vale Water District for infrastructure repairs; that money will be repaid to the town through specials district taxes. In highway department business, Brown told the board
that the department has the opportunity to purchase a 2014 demo-model excavator with roughly five hours on it for a price that is $100,000 less than a non-demo model. Currently the department is using a 2003 model excavator. Brown said that the town is looking into using Consolidated Local Street
and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) funds to purchase the demo model. The board authorized Town Highway Superintendent Jack Harrington to put the town’s 1990 Mack dump truck out to bid. The next Great Valley Town Board meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m.

have snow at that time of year, so teams end up traveling to Vermont, Canada or even Colorado for the early snow. We feel with our continuous improvement in automated snowmaking that we can now offer teams the chance to get on snow early and not have to travel as far to find snow.” The training camp package includes three lift tickets for Friday through Sunday, daily dryland training sessions, shuttle service to the Mountain Sports Center, three nights of lodging at the Inn at Holiday Valley Thursday through Sunday and a continental buffet breakfast daily. The goal of this camp is to offer teams a chance to get some early on-snow training for kids ages 8–18 coming with their own coaches for a jumpstart on the competition season. “The camp is open to anyone and we have had lots of inquiries from across the state and Pennsylvania,” said Nenno. “We can accommodate up to 200 kids, as we are doing a morning indoor dryland session each day and are limited for space with that.” The dryland training sessions are geared toward youth to teach stretches and additional exercises that they can do on their own at home to improve their fitness for the upcoming racing season. The camp takes place the last weekend in November, which
happens to coincide with the weekend Holiday Valley plans to open the resort for the winter. Jane Eshbaugh, marketing director at Holiday Valley, said, “If all the stars align and we’re able to open on Thanksgiving weekend, this will be an excellent event for Holiday Valley and the community. With our growing automated snowmaking system, a nice cold snap will allow our snowmakers to get out there and get some trails open!” If there is enough snow, Holiday Valley plans to build a mogul course for freestyle campers to train. In addition, if a team wants to run gates during their session and not just free ski, they can rent a reserved space to set up a racecourse for an additional charge. If teams need coaches, that can also be arranged. They can also rent other racing equipment as needed. Only a few slopes will be dedicated for training camp use. “It all depends on Mother Nature, but more than likely it
will be Edelweiss and Yodeler trails,” Nenno said. “It’s a great opportunity for race and freestyle team members from the East to be able to ski early in the year in preparation for their competitive seasons, and it is always nice for the kids, coaches and families staying in our lodging and shopping in the village,” said Eshbaugh. Special lodging rates are offered for training camp weekend at the Inn at Holiday Valley Thursday through Sunday. Room rates are $300 per person (two in a room) or $600 (one person in room). Special rates for coaches traveling with teams and individuals are offered as well. The camp will be run as weather permits; any unused portion of the camp due to uncooperative weather will be refunded. SPCA Receives Challenge to ‘Raise The Woof’ at Shelter The nearly 50 dogs and over 200 cats of the SPCA need to be kept warm and dry this winter! The need for a new roof, heating, ventilation and insulation as soon as possible is at the top of the list to achieve this for our community’s most needy animals. The SPCA in Cattaraugus County is embarking on a critical fund raising campaign to for the needed $250,000 to immediately begin updates on our heating, venting, insulation and most importantly, to raise the critical $85,000 for full repair of the shelter’s 35-yearold roof. We do have $100,000 from an individual donor towards this total project, but it is not enough. As we begin our work to raise these dollars, community support is critical, both from individuals and from local
businesses. The organizations’ executive director, Geri Anne Elsen, notes “We are very grateful to receive a first major gift and key challenge from local businessman Mel Duggan, of Duggan and Duggan, General Contractor, Inc.”. Duggan recently visited the shelter, reviewed the operations, and stated the following after the visit; “Because I feel so strongly about the need, I am donating $1,000 and the cost of postage for 200 mailings. Using this postage I would like the SPCA to send out a challenge from Duggan and Duggan to 200 businesses in the area, to please help this cause.” Board Chair Dan Evans, owner of Pleasant Valley Greenhouses, immediately matched Duggan’s challenge
with donation of $1,000 from Pleasant Valley Greenhouses. The SPCA hopes that all local businesses and individuals consider an immediate donation to our “Raise the Woof” campaign by donating specifically to this cause. Rotary and American Legion Sponsoring Kids Halloween Party This year again the Rotary Club of Ellicottville’s Foundation for Youth and The American Legion will sponsor a community Halloween Party at the American Legion on Maples Road in Ellicottville. On Saturday, Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m., kids ages12 and under will have the opportunity
to Trick or Treat at this indoor location. The event features games, crafts, hay rides (weather permitting) and scary fun for the whole family, with candy and other treats for the kids! This party is free for children and has established itself as the place to be on Halloween. Drop

Kevin Bower Earns Eagle Scout Badge On Oct. 17, 2015 Boy Scout Kevin Bower; a member of American Legion sponsored Troop 652, Ellicottville, NY will be honored at a special Court of Honor celebration at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ellicottville for having earned the badge of Eagle Scout. Members of the congregation, past Eagle Scouts and friends and family of Kevin are invited to attend. Eagle Scout is Scouting’s highest honor and is an achievement earned by less than 5 percent of all Scouts. Kevin has earned this awarding of Eagle Scout through perseverance of the Scouting principles and through service to his family, friends and to our community. He has earned 26 merit badges, demonstrating his eagerness to learn new skills and to develop his talents. He served with the Troop in over 40 hours of community service projects and, in positions of responsibility, leading the Troop. For his final Eagle badge project, Kevin planned, organized and supervised the remodeling of Emmaus House of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The project involved more than 250 total volunteer hours, organizing the funding and acquisition of materials and the organizing of the work details. Kevin is a graduate of ECS, and was a member of the ECS basketball and golf teams. He is currently attending Alfred State College, in the Mechanical Engineering program. Kevin is held in high esteem by his teachers, his troop and his family for his efforts and achievements. Congratulations Kevin!
