If you’re in the mood for some fresh air, then head to Allegany State Park on Jan. 1, 2016, for a First Day Hike. Suit up and head to the Summit Area Warming Hut for a selfguided hike on the Red House side of the park. The off-trail walk is only about 1 mile long and easy to moderate in intensity with some minor inclines and declines. Just follow the old mountain bike trail to Stone Tower and make a loop back along the warming hut. There’s even a scavenger hunt along the way. The event runs from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and you can pick up your trail map and guide in the Summit Warming Hut, and be sure to dress for the weather. If the weather permits, feel free to bring your snowshoes, trekking poles or anything else you need for your hike. Snowmaking Continues While the weather has not cooperated as much as most had hoped over this winter break, there’s just enough snow for those skiers and snowboarders who can’t wait any longer. Holiday Valley’s Yodeler and Creekside lifts continue to spin this week, giving guests access to the Yodeler and School Haus slopes. Lessons are being offered at School Haus. See HV Open page 6

The countdown to 2016 begins at Holiday Valley this Thursday, when a lineup of New Year’s Eve fun awaits. Besides skiing, a familyfriendly party will be held in the Main Lodge. “The new addition is Mackenzie Bart with her Ventriloquist show,” said marketing director Jane Eshbaugh. “She performed this act when she competed in the 2014 Miss America pageant!” Following the 8:30 performance by Bart, guests will be treated to dancing, contests and fun led by See New Year’s Eve page 2
The Town of Ellicottville’s Planning Board has forwarded proposed amendments to zoning law to the full town board for its review and approval. A public hearing will be held on the matter once the town board has completed its review.
The changes are intended to clarify existing language that was weak on specificity in defining “Commercial Land Uses,” including definitions of farm stands, food stands and artisan’s workshops. Amendments also were made to add some types of land uses, including micro-breweries and
micro-distilleries, which were not included in the existing law. The proposed new language defines those and other businesses as follows: Artisan’s Workshop: A commercial establishment that serves individual households See Town Planning Board page 4
Burrell Chairs Final Meeting as Supervisor Board Reviews Hwy. Job Applicants By Jann Wiswall
In his last meeting as Town of Ellicottville Supervisor, John Burrell worked with the board to finalize two highway department position descriptions and take care
of some last minute details regarding an invoice for equipment rental and the purchase of a replacement pump for the wastewater treatment plant. The pump purchase decision will be made in January after incoming town supervisor Matt McAndrew takes office. McAndrew will be sworn in
on Jan. 1. The board reviewed the proposed job descriptions for two highway department positions: the Highway Superintendent and the Working Supervisor. Few issues were noted regarding the Superintendent description, but several board members felt See Town Board page 11

Astronomy Classes Begin Jan. 26 The Ellicottville Memorial Library is offering five, free astronomy classes this winter. They will be led by longtime amateur astronomer Bert Probst and each is structured for adults and young adults over the age of 16. There is no charge for any of these classes and attendance is limited to 15. You may attend any or all of these classes. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE NIGHT SKY -- Feb. 2 In this class you will discover what’s up there in the Ellicottville night sky. We’ll cover all sorts of good subjects, some familiar and some not so familiar. These will include the moon, planets, constellations, galaxies, star clusters, meteors, the northern lights and the International Space Station. NAKED EYE OBJECTS IN THE NIGHT SKY – Feb. 9 When you look up at the clear night sky, can you make any sense out of the beautiful randomness? Do you see anything you recognize beyond possibly the moon and the Big Dipper? If not, this class is for you. We’ll concentrate on night sky objects that are easily recognized with the greatest optical instruments known to man – your own two amazing eyes. We’ll view slides of these objects as well as a sky chart for each of the four seasons. This will make identifying our selected targets easier. This lecture will help you better enjoy time spent under a clear night sky. OUR INSTRUMENTS FOR VIEWING THE NIGHT SKY – Feb. 23 This class is for you if you’ve ever thought about owning a telescope, if you have a telescope that is gathering dust instead of star light, or if you’re just plain curious about these magnificent instruments.
The three major types of telescopes and the mounts in use today for amateur telescopes will be reviewed. A brief description of the evolution of the telescope will be presented by considering six historic telescopes from Galileo’s original (1609) to the Hubble Space Telescope (launched in 1990). Following the presentation a mini workshop will be held. All telescope subjects will be open for discussion including any problems you may be having with yours. You are encouraged to bring your telescope for display and/or to receive assistance in its use. METEORS, METEORITES, CRATERS AND COMETS – March 1 Do rocks really fall from the heavens? We’ll be talking about “shooting stars” and meteorites. Yes, there are many craters on the moon, but did you know there are more than 170 documented craters here on earth? We’ll learn about four of the better known among these, including the famous Meteor Crater in Arizona and the most recent in Tunguska, Siberia. And those beautiful, however infrequent, visitors to our part of the solar system, comets – where do they come from and how are they related to shooting stars, meteorites and craters? We’ll tie all of these together.

Unfortunately, the usual Groomer’s Parade down Cindy’s Run will not be happening this year, since Mother Nature has taken her time providing that trail with the needed snow. But, at 11:30 p.m., the annual Torchlight Parade begins according to tradition. Eshbaugh noted that, “The torchlight parade will be modified to come down the
bottom of Cindy’s Run” this year. The questionable snow conditions won’t stop the fireworks though, and they are set to light up the night sky over EVL starting at 11:45 p.m. Says Eshbaugh of the event: “It’s a fun celebration of the New Year with awesome fireworks.” She also added that admission is free. Keep your Pet Safe this Winter

Winter is here, which means the temperatures are dropping and snow is falling, and suddenly veterinarians are seeing weather-related pet emergencies increase. Common winter maladies we see in pets include orthopedic injuries, lacerations and frozen extremities, as well as softtissue injuries secondary to trauma from ice and snow. “Riva,” a Golden Doodle, recently came into my office limping after taking a long snowshoe trek with her owner. Upon examination, we saw that Riva had collected large snowballs between her paw pads, a common problem in the wintertime. With some careful trimming of the hair between the pads and fitting her with protective snow boots, Riva was on her way to happier trails and luckily, did not have one of the more severe, weather related injuries.
With your furrier breeds like the doodles and poodles and retrievers, it’s important to trim those snowballs from between the toes, and keep protective boots handy. Snowballs can be quite painful for your pet to walk on and cause paw lacerations and deep skin infections so take heed! “Scout,” a chocolate lab, presented on emergency after running alongside his owner’s snowboard. Being a very anxious and excitable pet, Scout wanted to be close to his owner, and subsequently, his paw was run over by the snowboard. Skiing and snowboard injuries are very common in pets this time of year, especially the active sportsters like the Labradors, as the sharp metal edges can easily lacerate tendons. This particular injury requires immediate surgery and casting for up to eight weeks, so please, don’t wait, call your veterinarian immediately, and more importantly, be careful if you are going to ski or board with your pet, knowing the consequences can be detrimental. “Lucy,” a Burnese Mountain dog, was having a terrific time in the deep snow on her recent hike and came home holding a hind leg up. Lucy presented with swelling and movement in her knee area which subsequently was found to be a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Cruciate and

meniscal tears are as common in dogs as they can be in skiers on the mountain. Just as with their human counterparts, pets need regular, controlled exercise, and need their weight to be maintained, or injuries such as Lucy’s can happen. ACL tears are common in the larger, more athletic breeds like the Labradors, pit bulls, boxers, Burnese Mountain dogs and Chesapeake Bay retrievers. All, like “Lucy,” require ACL surgery with an orthopedic surgeon and have a minimum of 12 weeks of rehab! Finally, “Roscoe,” a Jack Russell terrier, presented with hypothermia after an afternoon hike. Short-haired breeds like Jack Russell terriers are very susceptible to hypothermia. If they keep moving, they will stay warm, but poorly insulated areas of their bodies can be prone to damage from extreme cold. The most important thing to remember is to get your pet warmed up immediately, have a digital thermometer handy to monitor his body temperature, and see your veterinarian immediately if he/she is not responding quickly. So, during these long winter months ahead, think ahead. Be smart about where you go, when you go, and have the appropriate protective gear for your pet. Most importantly, BE SAFE and HAVE FUN!

All equipment, materials and vehicles shall be housed in a completely enclosed building; there shall be no outdoor storage at any time. Examples of an artisan’s workshop include, but are not limited to, furniture repair, antiques repair and refinishing, metalworking, upholstery shop, and a drapery shop, where made-to-order drapes and curtains are fabricated. Business Support Services: A commercial establishment providing services to business establishments on a fee or contract basis, including but not limited to advertising services, mailing services, business equipment rental and leasing, employment agency, building maintenance and janitorial services, small business machine repair services, and/or protective services. Contractor’s Shop: An establishment used for the indoor storage of a contractor’s equipment, supplies, materials, and/or vehicles. All equipment, materials and vehicles shall be housed in a completely enclosed building; there shall be no outdoor storage at any time. A contractor’s shop may also be used for preliminary custom work, such as woodworking and/or painting or staining of items that are delivered to a client off-site. All custom work shall be conducted entirely within an enclosed building. Farm Stand: A building or structure used for the retail sale of agricultural products, whether produced on the site or off the site on which the stand is located, provided that products offered for sale are locally grown in the Western New York region. A Farm Stand may be seasonal or may operate year-round. Agricultural products may include fruit, vegetables, flowers, herbs, plants, Christmas trees, eggs, and similar items. Sales of home-processed food products such as jams, jellies, pickles, sauces or baked goods, which are prepared at a location other than the Farm Stand, may be allowed; however no food for sale may be cooked or prepared at a farm stand. No commercially processed or packaged foodstuffs shall be sold at a farm stand. A farm stand shall not exceed 15 feet in height and shall conform
to all required setbacks for the zoning district in which it is located; however, if the farm stand is not a permanent structure, it may be located no closer than 15 feet to the front property line. Parking: Off-street parking shall be provided outside the road right-of-way. Signs: Signs for a Farm stand shall comply with the requirements of Section 12.1 of this Zoning Law. If the signs are permanent, a sign permit shall be required. Farmers Market: An area where, on designated days and times, growers and producers of horticultural and agricultural products sell their products directly to the public from vehicles or temporary stands. Products may include items such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, nuts, live plants, flowers, honey, maple syrup, eggs, meat, poultry, dairy products, baked goods, jams and jellies, and similar products. Products may also include arts and crafts items produced by the vendor. Items for sale may also include prepared food and beverages, whether for consumption onsite or off-site. Food Stand: A temporary, commercial, food service establishment, which is open seasonally on designated days and times in the same, permanent location. The operator of a Food Stand shall comply with all state and county health department regulations concerning food preparation and sales. A food truck, which is mobile, is not a “food stand.” Micro-brewery: A smallscale production facility at which beer is produced and bottled and at which wholesale and retail storage and distribution may occur. The volume of production of such facility may not exceed 15,000 barrels or 465,000 gallons per year. The facility may have a tasting room for the consumption and sales of products produced on site. Micro-distillery: A smallscale, craft alcohol production facility, which may include the production of distilled spirits, hard ciders, and/or wine. The volume of production of such a facility may not exceed 35,000 gallons per year. The facility may have a tasting room for the consumption and sales of products produced on site. Produce Stand: A stand, tent, structure, or building, not
to exceed a gross floor area of 500 square feet, from which seasonal agricultural products produced on the premises are sold. Agricultural products may include fruit, vegetables, flowers, herbs, plants, Christmas trees, eggs and similar items. For purposes of this definition “premises” may include abutting parcels under the same ownership. No more than one produce stand can be located on any one premises. A produce stand is an accessory use to the primarily agricultural use of the property. A produce stand shall not exceed 15 feet in height and shall conform to all required setbacks for the zoning district in which it is located, except that it may encroach into the front yard setback; however, the stand shall be set back a minimum of 15 feet from the road right-ofway. Parking: Off-street parking shall be provided outside the road right-of-way. The parking area need not be paved. Signs: A produce stand may have a total of two temporary ground identification signs, which shall conform to the requirements for temporary signs in Section 12.1C(1) of the Zoning Law. Such signs do not require a sign permit; however, they may not be located off-premises and they shall be removed when the produce stand closes for the season. In other business during the Dec. 21 Planning Board meeting, the owner of the proposed Stillhouse Brewpub and Distillery, William Bursee, was asked by the planning board to make some additional changes to the site plan for the project. Once those plans are approved by the planning board, Bursee must apply for several zoning variances from the Town’s Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA). The site of the future business is located on the former site of Aardvark across Rt. 219 from the Tim Horton’s restaurant. Local approvals must be in hand before Bursee can apply for the necessary state and federal government permits. The planning board also formally thanked retiring town planner Carol Horowitz for her many years of service. The next planning board meeting will be held on Monday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. in the town/village hall.

Well the 2015-2016 appears to be underway, thanks to the hard work and some exceptional technology in snowmaking in which our area resorts have invested. I am sure many of us have had mixed emotions about this wacky season so far. I spent much of December riding my motorcycle. I have seen activity at local golf courses, plus many other warmer weather activities. I, too, have bristled at the local weather forecasters and “anticold” citizens reveling in this unseasonable warmth… But, it only took a couple cold nights and some determined and skilled snowmakers, to get the slopes open at Holiday Valley and HoliMont for this first full weekend of the year. A couple of things to keep in mind when you do finally get “on-snow” to make the early season fun and safe: • Be a good citizen on the slopes. Everyone is anxious to
get going; maybe there is some new gear to try out, or a lot of pent up enthusiasm for your first season pass. Whatever it is, the reality is that there are lots of enthusiasts, lots of eager anticipation, lots of skiers and riders and limited terrain. • Skiing and snowboard technology has taken our typical downhill routes, from the fall-line (straight ski technology) to higher speed arcing turns (shaped ski technology). The problem with this is that arcing turns use up a lot of terrain, and on narrower and thinner coverage this may impede others’ paths and terrain approaching from above. So ski and ride in a narrower, slightly slower lane until we get full access to all slopes and terrain. • Use this time to get your feet under you. We are all anxious to “let ‘er rip,” but let’s use some discretion and realize there a lot of people trying to use limited terrain. Keep your speed appropriate for conditions – snow surface, weather, lighting, downhill traffic, whether snowmaking is present and many other things. Also keep in touch with your mental and physical state. Get tired? Take a break. Get an attitude? Take a break. • There will be many people who are anxious to get as much in as they can, which means jostling and rushing to lift lines. Be courteous and take your time. The modern lifts we enjoy have a tremendous uphill
capacity. You won’t lose any slope time by being respectful to others. • Please also be aware that even on the first day, there are likely to be lessons on-snow. In these situations an instructor is working with someone who is focused on a task or directions and may be less aware of the immediate surroundings. Please be courteous and afford them some consideration. Please use these minimal suggestions to keep your experience a positive one to begin the season. We have weeks of great conditions ahead of us. C’mon… this IS the “Snowbelt” and if it only gets cold, the resorts can blanket the slopes with great snow. So get out there and have some fun, start slow and before you know it, you will be in mid-season form, tearing the slopes up! Oh, and let me just make a quick reminder that now is a good time to take a lesson from PSIA-E/AASI trained snowsports instructors. They are anxious to get going as well, and getting a few tips to start right can’t help but make you a better skier/rider. We all look to improve and expand our skill level and terrain usage, don’t we? I do. So, be safe and sane, put a smile on your face, and point ‘em downhill! As always, I look forward to seeing you on the slopes.

With the temps dropping again this week, winter might finally arrive. HV’s snowmakers are taking advantage of the cold and the snow guns are on full blast, in hopes that more trails will be open soon. Weather permitting, the plan for opening Friday or Saturday are as follows: the Candy Cane
loop (Candy Cane, Laurel, Punch Bowl and Sugar Plum) and Mardi Gras lift and slope. Soon to follow are Cindy’s lift and slope, Edelweiss slope, Sunrise lift and slope, Tannenbaum lift and slope, and Morning Star lift and slope plus Fiddler’s Elbow. Terrain features on Fiddler’s Elbow or Foxfire are high on the priority
list as well. Be sure to check Holiday Valley’s web site and Facebook page for the latest details of what’s open. In addition, the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster will be open all this week and also next week for Canadian Friendship week. Hop on and fly down the hill!

kick-off for the snow sports industry’s January Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. This snow sports industry initiative has introduced thousands of children and adults to ski and snowboard lessons since its inception in 2009. According to Bob Armour, Holiday Valley’s Snowsports Director, “Holiday Valley is joining with resorts across the country to introduce the great sports of skiing and snowboarding to as many people as possible! We invite anyone age 6 and over to be a part of breaking a Guinness world record by taking a FREE Learn to Ski or Learn to Snowboard Lesson at Holiday Valley.” Reservations are required by calling (716) 699-3505. The beginner lesson package includes rental equipment, a first-timer lesson and a beginner’s area lift ticket. Armour suggests, “Plan to arrive at Holiday Valley’s Creekside Lodge, located slopeside of the Holiday Valley Lodge, by 9 a.m. at the latest. Bring your own clothing
(base layer, insulating layer and weatherproof jacket and pants, weather proof mittens or gloves, goggles). You can rent a helmet here at the resort. Bring a pair of medium weight socks - not cotton - to wear during your time on the slopes. Anyone under 18 must have a parent to sign a legal form.” At the Creekside Lodge, participants will fill out an enrollment form first. Next they’ll get their boots at the rental counter. Skis and poles or a snowboard will be issued that will be sized properly for the participant’s height and ability. Groups will be assigned to an instructor. After the lesson, the instructor will give the new skiers and snowboarders directions on where to go and
what to do next, based on how far they progressed in their lesson. They’ll also receive a “You Rip” card that gives them a discount on future lift, lesson and rental packages for a full year, plus coupons for a discount on a helmet purchase in the Mountain Shop and a half priced appetizer in John Harvard’s Restaurant at Holiday Valley. During the rest of January’s Learn a Snowsport Month, Holiday Valley offers weekday learn to ski/snowboard packages for half price, just $30 during the day or $20 at night. The package includes a beginner’s lesson, a beginner’s area lift ticket and equipment rental. Armour says, “The World’s Largest Lesson and National Learn a Snowsport Month are nationwide initiatives that show people how easy and fun it is to learn to ski or snowboard. OBITUARY Betty L. Zlockie 1936-2015 Betty was employed at Olean High School for 32 years, retiring in 2006. She was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church. Betty enjoyed bowling, cooking and taking care of her family. Surviving are two sons, Leonard M. (Lisa) Zlockie Jr. of Olean and Stephen M. (Lisa) Zlockie of Olean; four grandchildren, Luke, Morgan, Erin and Heather; a great-
grandson, Kalem; and a special niece, Linda (Pete) Rezzelle of Erie. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Bob, Bill and Bud. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Born May 1, 1936, in Erie, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George and Gertrude Smith Huegel. On Sept. 26, 1959, in Sacred Heart Church, Erie, Pa., she married Leonard M. Zlockie Sr., who passed away March 20, 2007.

that the working supervisor description needed some tweaking. They felt that it needed to be clearer that the working supervisor is expected to personally drive and maintain vehicles and perform substantial snow removal and road repair work in addition to managing day-to-day work assignments, scheduling, instruction, weather monitoring and related work. The working supervisor will report to the highway superintendent, who likely will be Mark Alianello. Alianello, who will work on a contract basis as highway superintendent with high-level
planning, oversight, budgeting and project management responsibilities, worked with the board to define this job description. Alianello will also retain his position as the town’s engineer and will continue to run his engineering firm, MDA Engineers. His appointment is expected to be made by McAndrew and the board at a reorganizational meeting scheduled for Monday, Jan. 4. Burrell asked the board if it was concerned that there will not be a highway superintendent on staff from Jan. 1-4. The board will ask
acting deputy superintendent Frank Moore, whose term technically ends Dec. 31, to stay on in the acting position until the new superintendent is appointed on Jan. 4. Following this discussion, the board dismissed the media and others in order to hold a private executive session to discuss certain personnel issues and to review the ten applications it had received for the working supervisor job opening. The board intended to select its top candidates from the applicants to come in for interviews. Burrell excused himself from the candidate review.
Burrell Recognized for Service to Community Board member Steve Crowley closed the Dec. 16 regular meeting of the Town of Ellicottville board with the following statement: “I move to adjourn the meeting in recognition of Supervisor John Burrell’s eight years of service to the town as Supervisor and acknowledge the many accomplishments, including the Town Center, highway facility, Holiday Valley Road, East Tank project, and the prudent fiscal management John has achieved with the Board for the betterment of the community.” Burrell’s term ends Dec. 31.

New Exhibit Opens at Cattaraugus County Museum The Cattaraugus County Museum and Research Library is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit: “Frank Wayland Higgins, 35th Governor of New York.” The exhibit, made possible largely through generous loans of material by Mr. Ronnie Beverly of Rushford and Mr. Frank Higgins of Olean, focuses on the life of this prominent politician who called Olean home through photographs, letters, documents, and campaign materials. Snowflake Festival Feb. 6 The Audubon Nature Center is seeking sponsors, demonstrators, and volunteers for its winter celebration, the Snowflake Festival, on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016. With a shift in emphasis for 2016, the Snowflake Festival will showcase local and sustainable living skills and product demonstrations, in addition to favorites like snowshoes, live birds of prey presentations, nest box building, and horse-drawn wagon rides. The Nature Center is featuring exhibitors who have sustainably produced products AND who can demonstrate those production skills at the festival. Some examples are soap-making, natural dyes, candle-making, and
gardening. Space is given on a modified first-come, firstserved basis, with preference to organizations and vendors whose missions and products most closely compliment the Festival theme of sustainable living and the Nature Center’s mission of connecting people to nature and promoting environmentally responsible behaviors.
