Holy Name of Mary celebrating 175th anniversary with Mass, dinner BY DEB EVERTS ELLICOTTVILLE — The parishioners of Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic Church are observing their church’s 175th anniversary with a celebration Mass and dinner, Thursday, Sept. 10. A special Mass will be held at the church at 5 p.m., followed by a catered dinner that will take place at the Ellicottville American Legion, starting at 6:30. Religious educator Ann Marie Fitzpatrick said everyone is invited to both the dinner and Mass that will be celebrated by Bishop Michael Fisher of the Diocese of Buffalo. She said all the priests who are still alive and who have lived and worked at Holy Name of Mary are also invited to attend. Reservations with payment are required by Sept. 1, so they have a headcount. The cost is $20. “Village Mayor John Burrell will be making a proclamation at the dinner and we are setting up speakers who have special stories about the church over the years, including Kevin Kelly about the history of how we got the St. Patrick statue,” she said. “We will have pictures and memorabilia from over the years set out at the dinner, and we already have a time capsule that we will leave until the 200th.” The 175th Anniversary committee is looking for good pictures to borrow for display at the celebration dinner. They are hoping for shots of baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations or other church celebrations, with names if possible. Attendees may bring their pictures to the dinner or leave them with Gee Gee

Kuhn, who can be reached at (716) 699-2626. They will be returned Saturday or Sunday after Mass. To commemorate the church’s anniversary, parishioners are planning a brick walk leading to the Blessed Mother outside in front of the church. Anyone may purchase a brick for themselves, loved ones, business, prayer or any other significant reason. The bricks are $100 each and may include up to three lines, with no more than 16 characters for each

line. Forms can be found at the back of the church. Fitzpatrick said a dedication plaque has been generously donated by Travis and Darlene Baugh. She said Tom Lowry of Tom Lowry Construction, Inc. is doing all the concrete work and has been instrumental in engaging the donor of the plaque. Any proceeds above the cost of the project will go toward the buildings and grounds fund to complete future needed projects.

Donations are being accepted from those who do not want a brick. Checks should be made out to “Holy Name of Mary Buildings and Grounds” and put in an envelope marked “bricks” or mailed to Teresa. Call Fitzpatrick at (716) 9134306 with questions.

area to help alleviate the lack of priests.

Holy Name of Mary RC Church is one of the oldest parishes in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo. According to the St. Bonaventure University archives, Nicholas and Mary Devereux worked with John C. Devereux, their son; Bishop Timon and other members of the Ellicottville community, in 1848, to establish a missionary and benevolent society which was devoted to supporting the growing local Catholic community.

According to the “History of Cattaraugus,” by L.H. Everts, 1879, the first services of the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church were conducted by Father McAvoy at the Mansion House, kept by David Huntley. Later, Nicholas Devereux purchased a vacant schoolhouse and fitted it for a chapel. Fathers Dooran and McKievers were parish priests in residence and services were held in this chapel for a year or two. Devereux agreed to build a church if Fathers Dooran and McKievers would raise money for a parsonage. Fathers Pamfilio and Milian, of the order of Franciscans, were stationed here and an organization was formed Sept. 20, 1848, by Bishop Timon. When the church edifice was erected in 1851, Father Fitzsimmons was the first

Information from the archives states that St. Philip Neri Church was built in Ellicottville in 1851. Around this time, Nicholas Devereux conceived the idea, with Bishop Timon’s support and approval, of bringing a Franciscan presence into the

pastor. The first church building was destroyed by a fire in 1881. Following the loss of the original building, a second building was constructed but later tragically lost to another fire, near the corner of Washington and Mill streets. The parish was officially incorporated as Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic Church in 1892. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the current church was erected in 1909 at its present location at 22 Jefferson St.

Town historian Ellen Sirianni Frank said the church building was originally located right in the middle of Washington Street, between the current TOPS supermarket and Kwik Fill gas station. When the Washington Street church was destroyed by fire in 1909, the congregation quickly rebuilt at the current location. She said they broke ground in May that same year, laid the cornerstone July 28 and completed the current building in October 1909.

Clark and canine Posie recent graduates of HOPE program BY DEB EVERTS LITTLE VALLEY — Hope is on the way. A Cattaraugus County woman has joined the forces of a national organization to use her skills and those of her dog to help traumatized victims heal and move forward in their lives. Robin Zefers Clark and her canine, Posie, recently graduated from the HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response (AACR) program. Clark and her 3-and-a-halfyear-old golden retriever officially became certified as a HOPE team June 21 and will answer requested calls to provide comfort and crisis support whenever and wherever they are needed. In addition to disaster deployments, the duo will be called out to do community events to make people aware that HOPE is there when needed and what the organization does. HOPE’s all-volunteer teams and their canines are highlytrained and certified to provide emotional comfort and support to people in times of crisis. The calming nature of the dogs helps to redirect people while first responders can secure the scene. HOPE frequently partners with mental health professionals and counselors in response to a crisis. They never self-deploy — they wait to be invited. Members train at workshops each year to meet AACR National Standards. Clark said HOPE dogs are all therapy dogs, but the dogs

have to be trained at a high level because of all the stress and distractions at a crisis scene. She said handlers and their dogs must have 12 consecutive months experience volunteering in animal-assisted activities/therapy.

Watching her friend, Mary MacQueen, and her dog, Paxil, working as a HOPE team influenced Clark to become a dog and handler team, but she also saw what a difference dogs can make in calming people down and providing comfort.

“Unlike a service dog that has a specific job to do for a person that is handling them, like a guide dog, Posie will have a job such as going into places where there has been a disaster — whether manmade or natural,” she said. Clark said Posie had already been training to be a therapy dog but she also has been training to get used to being in different types of places including motels and restaurants, as well as tight areas. Wearing her in-training vest, she has learned how to behave in a restaurant — to sit quietly underneath the table and kind of disappear so no one notices her. “People have been very supportive of Posie when they see her out. I usually carry some of her trading cards to give to kids because they are learning too. Because she’s wearing a vest, they may think she’s a service dog,” she said. “I take her places to learn how to greet people politely and how to behave in certain areas.” Prior to her dog and handler team certification, Clark was a team leader for three years. She said the position also requires a fourday certification and they get certified right along with the dog handler teams. Team leaders are also deployed, whenever possible, to assist teams in their efforts and watch

“I’ve seen amazing things dogs can do just in therapy work,” she said. Then, to take it beyond and to go into these high-stress, crisis events is even more of a challenge.” Clark said she had planned to become a dog and handler team for some time, but hadn’t found the right dog, until Posie came along.

Photo provided Robin Zefers Clark and her golden retriever, Posie, became a certified team with the HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response program on June 21. They will now join other HOPE teams to provide comfort and/or crisis support when called in the future.

over them for signs of stress. These members without dogs are trained to supervise and support the dog/handler teams. “I will step back into

that role whenever there is a deployment and they are without a team leader. My main focus, however, will be going as a dog handler with Posie,” she said.

“Not every dog can do therapy work. The high-stress of it takes a special dog and Posie has really developed into that dog. I’ve been very impressed with her — I saw that in her,” she said. “We’ve worked through lots of different stages in teaching her how to be calm in different places and how to trust me as her handler, so she doesn’t worry. She’s done a great job. It’s been a lot of work but it’s been very rewarding.” Clark said Posie started as a happy little puppy in a training

vest, then progressed to her therapy dog certification. She took a slight break to have a beautiful litter of puppies and was certified as a HOPE Crisis Response Dog afterward. “Posie is known for her beautiful smile and a tail that is wagging all the time. Her smile will help heal many hearts,” she said. After 33 years of teaching art, Clark retired from Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School. When she isn’t working with her dog, much of her time is spent painting watercolors at Brookside Studio Watercolor on Maples Road. There are about 350 certified crisis response dog and handler teams in the United States and Canada, but very few in New York State. MacQueen with Paxil and, now, Clark with Posie are the only two teams in Cattaraugus County. A non-profit organization, HOPE is quickly gaining popularity, due to increasing natural and manmade disasters. Any organization in the country can request HOPE AACR by calling 1 (877) HOPEK9s. The benefits of a professional gutter cleaning Gutters serve an important role on a building, catching rainwater from the roof and channelling it away from the structure. Without properly functioning gutters and downspouts, basements can flood,

foundations may become cracked and soil can erode. Gutters also help maintain roof and siding longevity, ensuring that rainwater will not pool under shingles or siding. Wet leaves also create habitats for pests
