Cold doesn’t stop Wreaths Across America in Allegany County BY KATHRYN ROSS
SCIO — A bitter wind was blowing and snowflakes were in the air Dec. 13 when about two dozen volunteers gathered in a snow-covered Fairlawn Cemetery for Scio’s first Wreaths Across America. Co-coordinator of the event Brandi Wiech explained the 2:30 p.m. time slot was due to a scheduling conflict with the color guard from American Legion Post 702, which had partici-
pated in the Whitesville program at noon. Scio’s program got its start just two weeks ago when the Hometown Heroes Committee decided to take on the project, Wiech explained. Wreaths Across America is a nationwide program that takes place in over 56,000 cemeteries, including military cemeteries overseas and in U.S. territories, and in seven towns in Allegany County. Joanne White, the
other co-coordinator, said that 176 sponsored wreaths were to be placed in the Fairlawn Cemetery honoring veterans from all branches of the military. There are 256 veterans buried in Fairlawn Cemetery. With the help from WAA groups in Cuba, Belmont and Whitesville, the Hometown Heroes were able to acquire 176 wreaths. White said the Hometown Heroes

nity. He will bring a strong voice and dedication to the Jones Memorial Hospital board and its mission to advance access to healthcare in our rural communities. We are confident that his vision for the future of healthcare in our region and expertise in navigating the challenges of public health in a rural setting will be assets to this organization.” The board also elected new officers in 2025. Johnson, of Wellsville, was elected chairman after previously serving as vice chair. Jenny Bilotta of Cuba was elected vice chair after previously serving as treasurer. Jim Knapp of Wellsville was
