Longtime firefighter in Whitesville honored BY KATHRYN ROSS
WHITESVILLE — Longtime firefighter Bradley Mattison was honored by Allegany County fire officials and Assemblyman Joe Sempolinski over the weekend. Under Allegany County Firemen’s Auxiliary president Tina Dailey, the auxiliary hosted a dinner in the Whitesville Fire Hall to honor Mattison. Allegany County fire officials, the auxiliary and John Eberth, chief of staff for Assemblyman Joe Sempolinski, R-Canisteo, were in attendance. Mattison was ac-
companied by his wife, Mary, and their grandson, Spencer. Mattison, a 34-year veteran of the Allegany County Volunteer Fire Service, began his career with the Alma Volunteer Fire Department in 1991 and joined the Whitesville department in 1997. Over the years, he has served as chief twice and as assistant chief three times and first assistant chief once — serving a total of 23 years as a line officer. service to the Allegany County Firemen’s Auxillary.[/caption] He was named Allegany County Fireman of the Year in 2007 and 2014. He served as president of the Allegany County Firemen’s Association Convention, which was held in Whitesville this past summer. A citation from Sempolinski, who represents the 148th Assembly District, presented by Eberth, stated, “It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others, and a tireless Firefighter Honored continued on PAGE 4

Community helps build new playground at Cuba-Rushford Elementary BY BRIAN MCCLELLAN
CUBA — More than three dozen volunteers enjoyed sunshine and upbeat music blaring from a portable stereo as they gathered Oct. 3 at Cuba-Rushford Elementary School to assemble new playground equipment. The new play space, designed in part by students and community members and the result of grant funding through the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, is part of a nationwide effort led by KABOOM!, which works to “ensure every kid can experience the numerous physical, social and mental health

benefits of play regardless of background or where they live.” The Wilson Foundation’s support for the playground is through its Built to Play initiative, launched in 2018 in partnership with KABOOM! and The Skatepark Project to help communities in Western New York and southeast Michigan provide more safe and imaginative places for kids to play.
