BY KATHRYN ROSS
WELLSVILLE — Under sunny skies with high summer temperatures, the Wellsville celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States went off without a flaw Saturday. Hundreds of people attended the event, which was held on the David A. Howe Memorial Library lawn from noon to 4 p.m., with the greatest number of people coming out to hear the Genesee Valley Chorus perform. Descended from the original Bicentennial Chorus of 1976, several members performed a patriotic concert. Prior to that the crowd assembled to hear Ben Franklin, portrayed by Dr. Joe Felsen, read the Declaration of Independence and the chairman of the 250 committee read the names of the 56 signers of the document. Under the shade of the canopy of trees on the library lawn, people gathered to listen to Felsen and the chorus, and a historical sermon by Pastor Dan Kenyon. Then they toured the demonstrators who were gathered in tents across the lawn. Among the attractions were members of the local chapter of

the Daughters of the American Revolution, Bella Winslow portraying Betsy Ross, Angela Glickstein and Amber Tesson, who talked about the many uses of herbs, Kasey Blaney
of the Fiber Arts Council spinning and Becci Gearman, who demonstrated basket weaving. Many were intrigued by Seth Boehnke hammering knife blades on an anvil as well.

Committee member Shelly Dunn was responsible for the two biggest attractions, the revolutionary food tent, with samples of colonial foods that were tasted and appreciated by the crowd, and the life-size replica of the Liberty Bell. Many gathered around the bell or with Franklin, and sometimes with both for selfies. Among the demonstrators, Paul Vossler and his wife, who were dressed in patriotic garb, displayed his collection of Revolutionary War-era arms. Local whittlers also exhibited their craftsmanship. The cannon, courtesy of Cheryl Wesche, and obtained by Andrew Harris, was fired twice, first following the salute to the patriots who signed the Declaration of Independence, and
again partway through the event to delight the crowd. The replica cannon was built by the late Lanny Wesche and was always a parade favorite. Children enjoyed making ink, writing with quills, playing colonial games, learning to tie knots and listening to stories in Georgia Buchholz’s Maple Moon school tent. The Historical Trivia
Contest organized by Bev Sweet kept contestants thinking; when the former teacher wasn’t minding the 250th tent with the patriotic gingerbread man. It was won by Anna Wiley. The ornament was painted and donated by Nora Wilson Wheeler. By all accounts the event was appreciated and enjoyed by all who attended.
