Cpl. Jason Dunham Weekend coming up; meet crew from Navy ship named in his honor BY KATHRYN ROSS

SCIO — On April 14, 2004, on a dusty street in Karabilah, Iraq, Scio Central School graduate Jason Dunham made the ultimate sacrifice. At only 23, the 2000 Scio grad was serving with the 3rd Battalion of the 7th Marine Division in the War On Terror in Iraq. He was a corporal and leader of a platoon rifle squad. In hand-to-hand combat with an Iraqi insurgent, Dunham made the ultimate sacrifice, throwing his Kevlar helmet and body on a live grenade tossed by the insurgent. Smothering the blast, he saved the lives of two of his platoon members

but was mortally wounded. Dunham was evacuated to an in-country medical unit where he was placed in a room where he was expected to die. Capt. Heidi Kraft reevaluated his condition after Dunham responded to her inquiry. He was immediately evacuated to Germany for treatment and eventually transferred to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where he passed away eight days later. Family members said his parents, Dan and Deb Dunham, were able to be at his side when he passed because of Kraft’s intervention.

Photo provided by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Jason Dunham played basketball for Scio Central School before joining the Marines and he was a fan of the New York Yankees. Much of his high school memorabilia is displayed in Jason’s Dugout onboard the USS Jason Dunham DDG 109.

Allegany County IDA OKs incentives for $2.9M Scio baked goods facility BY BOB CLARK

BELVIDERE — A Canadian firm will see tax breaks to move baking production to Scio this year. The Allegany County Industrial Development Agency board unanimously approved sales and real property tax exemptions on Jan. 8 for Tasty Deluxe Foods LLC to redevelop the former Hydramec facility on Scio’s River Street. Documents provided by the IDA indicate the $2.93 million project is expected to create 25 full-time jobs and 10

part-time jobs within five years. Incentives include a sales tax exemption of about $123,000, as well as a real property tax exemption of about $218,000. The IDA held a public hearing on Wednesday in Scio, which officials said was attended

by about 20 people. “It was very supportive,” Clark said. “Most all of them were very positive. They asked a lot of good questions.” He said that while one person questioned the details of the Payment in Lieu of Taxes agreement with the firm, the overall response

from the residents was in favor of the development. “They really want someone in that building so it doesn’t go decrepit,” he said. “It’s been empty for about five years.” The site, on 1 acre at 4393 River St., includes a 21,000-square-foot structure that will be renovated for the project. Food production is expected to begin by mid-year with one production line with four to six employees, expanding to four or five lines in five years. Company officials

reported at the December IDA meeting that the firm planned the move to the U.S. to avoid high property costs near Toronto, tariffs, border clearing and to be closer to U.S. markets that make up 90% of the company’s sales. According to a company website, the business began in 1997 as a Subway frachise in Brampton, Ontario, before moving into food distribution in 1999 and into baked goods in 2003. The website lists clients including grocery store chains Aldi, Tesco and Lidl.

The project is the second in the last year in the area to receive tax breaks to move production from Canada to the United States. In September, the Cattaraugus County IDA approved tax breaks for a $1.2 million project to convert the former SetterStix building in Cattaraugus into a surface coating production facility under Hamilton, Ontario-based Daich. Daich officials reported at the time they plan to bring about 15 jobs to the site, noting access to U.S. markets as a reason for the development.
