Late Wellsville softball coach Frank Cady to be remembered BY KATHRYN ROSS ` — Plans are afoot to honor the late Frank Cady at Tuller Field, where he spent years coaching the Wellsville High School varsity girls softball team. Highway Superintendent Dean Arnold said that by agreement with the village, the town is responsible for the maintenance of parks and athletic fields while the village retains ownership of the property. As a result, any plans for the fields or parks go through both the village and town boards. Cady, who passed away in February 2017, coached and mentored hundreds of girls. The plan proposed and funded by the Cady family will add enclosed batting cages and raised practice pitching mounds to the Tuller Field complex. Cady’s accomplishments while coach of WHS softball include seven Section V championships in nine years; a New York state record of 58 consecutive wins, including the 1994 Azalea Championship; and seven Expressway Conference titles, including a streak of 41 consecutive wins. Several of his athletes went on to the collegiate level, including five at Division I, two at Division II and three who earned Collegiate AllAmerican status. Many of his former players are involved in local softball as coaches, supporters and players. While the matter has to go through the village board for approval, the town board gave its enthusiastic support to the endeavor. In regard to parks, the town also learned that the Lagoon Field Park is in need of repairs or replacement. Arnold told the board he has

made temporary fixes to some of the equipment but warned those repairs are not permanent. He also told the board that replacement parts are no longer available for the equipment there and said, “It would cost around $7,000 to replace the system.” The town has also received an additional $87,000 in Consolidated Highway funding from the state. Arnold said the additional funding will allow the town to replace 3.5 miles of road on Niles Hill with a fiber base, oil and stone this summer. The department already has plans to replace roadway on Miller Road, West Hill Road and Tarrantine Boulevard at the airport. From Councilwoman Patty Graves the board learned that talks concerning the service contract with the fire department are underway with the new officers and village officials. “We had a joint meeting with everyone concerned that was very successful and we hope that we will be able to make the compromises needed to satisfy everyone’s concerns,” she said. “We are currently investigating some legalities and will meet again in two weeks to start negotiations.” The town has been without a fire contract for over a year. Earlier in the year members of the board expressed their concern with the contract with Alfred State College’s Building and Trades Department for students to construct the new highway building, due to possible COVID-19 restrictions. Some proposed putting the project out to bid in case the students would not be able to perform. It was tabled for two months. At Wednesday’s board meeting Supervisor Shad

Alsworth said he had spoken to the head of the department Jeff Stevens earlier in the day. “Jeff Stevens enthusiastically confirmed the start of the project in the fall semester (August) and expressed that the project includes the diversity that they are

Rushford students receive Wilday, Fraser scholarships

CUBA — Two graduating Cuba-Rushford Central School seniors recently received scholarships managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation. Claire Benham received the Kaleigh Wilday Scholar Athlete Award. This scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to a scholar athlete who is part of a scholar-athlete team during her or his senior year. The Cuba-Rushford Athletic Awards Committee chooses the recipient of the scholarathlete award, which includes the $1,000 scholarship. The Kaleigh Wilday Endowment Fund, established by Cuba residents Ward “Skip” and Greta Wilday in memory of their daughter, makes possible this annual scholarship award. Benham will attend Duke University to study global health and biology. Autumn Michalski received the William D. and Catherine Griffin Fraser Scholarship. This scholarship is for a graduate of any Cattaraugus or Allegany County High

School pursuing a postsecondary education, with preference for a graduate of Olean High School or CubaRushford Central School pursuing a degree in the medical or education field. The late William D. Fraser, a long-time teacher and guidance counselor at Olean High School, initially established

AUTOMOTIVE The safest place for kids in the car Riding in a vehicle can be an exciting prospect for children. Such rides provide a chance to see the world outside of the house, and the speed with which scenery is flying by can be exhilarating for young minds. Children are first introduced to riding in cars as babies, when child safety seats will keep them secure. Although laws vary depending on where people are driving, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises that children remain in a rearfacing car seat until age 2 or older. As they get older and gain weight, children who have outgrown the rear-facing weight or height limit for their seats should use a forward-facing seat with a harness for as long as possible, up to the highest weight or height allowed by their car seat manufacturer, says the AAP. When children are old enough to graduate from car seat to booster seat to sitting in the car with only a seat belt, parents may wonder about where their youngsters can sit when riding in a vehicle. One area of the car tends to be safer than others for children. Researchers from the University of Buffalo who studied crashrelated fatalities in relation to seat location discovered that the backseat is 59 to 86 percent safer than the front seat. What’s more, the middle seat in the back of the car is 25 percent safer than the window seats. The science behind the study is that the middle seat offers the most distance from impact during a collision, or what the industry calls “the crumple zone.” The outer seats will be more affected, while the middle seat remains more insulated. However, the middle seat is only the safest when used with a full seat belt, rather than just a lap harness; otherwise, children should sit in the back where a full three-point seat belt is available, advises the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In addition, it can be tempting to cave under pressure and allow tweens to ride in the front of the car when they ask to do so or say that it is embarrassing to ride in back — since all of their friends are riding up front. The organization Safe Ride 4 Kids says studies show the safest place in the car for tweens is the back, until they are at least 13 years of age. Riding in the middle seat in the back of the car is the safest place for passengers, including children. Parents and caregivers should keep safety in mind when kids are in the car.

ALFRED—Danielle Adymy, Casey Chatley, and Cory Thomas became the newest members of the department after they were officially sworn in by Alfred State Officer-In-Charge Dr. John Anderson. Scott Richardson, chief of the University Police Department, said, “I am both pleased and excited to welcome Officer Cory Thomas, Officer Danielle Adymy, and Officer Casey Chatley to the NYS University Police at Alfred State College. Any time you have the opportunity to appoint a new officer to your department is exciting, and being able to appoint three new officers triples the excitement. With two of the three new appointments having graduated from the police

academy, that adds to the excitement, as well.” Richardson noted that the department is already getting the new officers ready for the upcoming school year. “All three have begun their duties here at UPD,” he said. “Officers Thomas and Chatley are both BMP Certified police officers and have begun

their field training. They will spend the next four weeks (160 hours) with our field training officers. Officer Adymy is currently attending the Alfred State Police Academy and will graduate in October and will begin her field training then. I couldn’t be more pleased with our three newest officers.”

Out & About

CANEADEA — This coming weekend the valley around Sugar Mountain and the Allen Lake State Forest will be alive not only with the sound of music but much more as the second Estival Festival takes place. The Estival Festival is a three-day, family-friendly music and arts festival held at 6341 East Hill Road. The first Estival Festival under the direction of Jeremy Lane took place in 2019. The coronavirus pandemic curtailed the second year of the event, but it is now back with new stages, more bands and more to do for both children and adults. Lane said he came up with his idea for a music event because “I was tired of seeing kids dragged to musical concerts where the only thing they had to do was sit on a blanket in a field while their parents enjoyed themselves. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to have a celebration of music and all the arts where both adults and children could experience a feast for all their senses.” Along with the 17 to 18

bands that will perform, there will be glass blowing and hot-air balloon rides and a variety of food and ice cream vendors. But the biggest attractions will be provided by Sly Boots of Buffalo. Slyboots is known for its world music and dance educational tours, workshops and private instruction. Combining elements of traditional West African music and dance, Chinese acrobatics, contemporary dance, magic and jazz, Slyboots strives to promote positive social change through cultural arts education. Along with individual performances and workshops, the interactive Slyboots Circus features master musicians, dancers and performers from around the world. After dark, Spun Out Fire Productions will provide a fire show set to music. There will also be a 12-foot bonfire where guests may mingle with performers and enjoy impromptu music. Estival Festival will get started Friday afternoon and continues to Sunday evening. The cost of the three-day

Allen was a longtime Wellsville community member. Generations of Wellsville residents remember Allen, as she was employed as a secretary for the Wellsville Central School District for 40 years, retiring in 2005. In May 2020, she passed away at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy. As just a small part of her legacy, Allen was a supporter of, and donor to, the Fassett GreenSpace Garden Project. In her retirement, Joanne was a census taker for the U.S. Census Bureau, and active in many organizations. These include the Wellsville First United Methodist Church, Allegany County Democratic Committee, Alfred State Alumni Association, Allegany Arts Association, Concerned Citizens of Allegany County and the Allegany County Historical Society. All members of the public are invited to this outdoor event. Anyone who knew Joanne from the school community to her church congregation to her non profit activism is strongly encouraged to attend. There will be a circle of sharing memories, stories and impacts from Allen’s life. Longtime resident, artisan and close friend to Allen, Elaine Hardman, is making a plaque in her honor. How to test home water quality contains potentially harmful levels of contaminants. This is especially crucial for those who rely on residential well water, which is not subject to the same testing as municipal systems. One place to start is with a Consumer Confidence Report. Most people on municipal water should receive an annual water quality report called a CCR, or Consumer Confidence Report, states Consumer Reports. People who rent or didn’t receive one can contact their local water supplier or their landlords. Testing can be initiated by contacting one’s local health department, which may provide free private well or drinking water testing, advises the Environmental Protection Agency. Homeowners also can reach out to a state-certified laboratory to test drinking water. These organizations can provide the most accurate results. Call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791. People also can buy test kits from their local home

centers or online. These tests come with a package of strips that contain reactants that change color to indicate the presence of various contaminants in the water. Keep in mind that quality control

Pleasant Valley Reclaim

may vary, and that tests can give false readings. Testing drinking water can alert to potential problems and compel homeowners to take action regarding contaminated water.

D I D YO U KNOW? Hundreds of rivers and tributaries criss-cross North America. Major ones often supply fresh water to local residents and some even serve as important commercial routes. The Brazos, the Colorado, the Columbia, the Hudson, and the Mississippi are major waterways, but smaller rivers are equally important to people and animals. Each June marks National Rivers Month, when people are encouraged to participate in river cleanup events throughout the month and even through the year. Various nonprofit organizations organize river cleanups that aim to prevent plastic from entering the world’s oceans from rivers. Others help collect trash that otherwise would contaminate rivers and prove harmful to wildlife. River trash is more than an eyesore; it can contaminate drinking water and poison marine life.

Water is essential for life. Generally speaking, a human can go without food for about three weeks, but typically would perish without water after just three to four days. When people consume water, they are doing so with the assumption or hope that the water is clean and free from harmful contaminants. Even though municipal water systems filter and test water supplies, the company EcoWater Systems™ says some of the most common tap water contaminants they encounter actually enter water sources after they have been tested at treatment facilities. Drinking water may contain small amounts of contaminants that are not unsafe to consume at certain levels. However, at higher levels, these same substances can be problematic. Contaminants can include hydrogen sulfide, raised acidic levels, arsenic, lead, nitrates, and microbiologicals, which include viruses, protozoan and parasites. Homeowners can take proactive approaches to test their water to determine if it
